- 0:19Speaker 1: How Watson learned the trick. Watson had been watching his
- 0:24Speaker 1: companion intently ever since he had sat down to the
- 0:27Speaker 1: breakfast table. Holmes happened to look up and catch his eye.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Well, Watson, what do you think you are?
- 0:35Speaker 3: He asked about you me. Yes, Holmes, I was thinking,
- 0:40Speaker 3: how superficial are these tricks of yours, and how wonderful
- 0:44Speaker 3: it is that the public should continue to show interest
- 0:46Speaker 3: in them.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I quite agree, said Holmes.
- 0:50Speaker 2: In fact, I have a recollection that I have myself
- 0:52Speaker 2: made a similar remark.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Your methods, said Watson, severely.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Are really easily.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Acquired, no doubt.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Holmes answered with a smile.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Perhaps you will yourself give an example of this method
- 1:07Speaker 2: of reasoning with.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Pleasure, said Watson.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I am able to say that you were greatly preoccupied
- 1:15Speaker 3: when you got up this morning.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Excellent, said Holmes.
- 1:19Speaker 2: How could you possibly know that?
- 1:21Speaker 3: Because you are usually a very tidy man and yet
- 1:25Speaker 3: you have forgotten to shave.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Dear me, how very clever, said Holmes. I had no idea, Watson,
- 1:32Speaker 2: that you are so apt a pupil. Has your eagle
- 1:34Speaker 2: eye detected? Anything more?
- 1:37Speaker 3: Yes, Holmes, you have a client named Barlow, and you
- 1:40Speaker 3: have not been successful with his case.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Dear me, how could you know that?
- 1:45Speaker 3: I saw the name outside his envelope? When you opened it,
- 1:49Speaker 3: you gave a groan and thrust it into your pocket
- 1:52Speaker 3: with a frown on your face.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Admirable, you are indeed observant.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Any other points, I fear Holmes, that you have taken
- 2:01Speaker 3: to financial speculation.
- 2:03Speaker 2: How could you tell that, Watson, You.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Opened the paper, turned to the financial page and gave
- 2:09Speaker 3: a loud exclamation of interest.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Well, that is very clever of you, Watson.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Any more, Yes, Holmes, you have put on your black
- 2:18Speaker 3: coat instead of your dressing gown, which proves that you
- 2:21Speaker 3: are expecting some important visitor at once. Anything more, I
- 2:27Speaker 3: have no doubt that I could find other points homes,
- 2:30Speaker 3: but I only give you these few in order to
- 2:33Speaker 3: show you that there are other people in the world
- 2:35Speaker 3: who can be as clever as you.
- 2:38Speaker 2: And some not so clever, said Holmes. I admit that
- 2:43Speaker 2: they are few. But I am afraid, dear Watson, that
- 2:46Speaker 2: I must count you among them.
- 2:48Speaker 3: What do you mean, Holmes, Well.
- 2:51Speaker 2: My dear fellow, I fear your deductions have not been
- 2:55Speaker 2: so happy as I should have wished.
- 2:57Speaker 3: You mean that I was mistaken.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Just a little that way? I fear. Let us take
- 3:03Speaker 2: the points in their order. I did not shave because
- 3:06Speaker 2: I have sent my razor to be sharpened. I put
- 3:10Speaker 2: on my coat because I have worse luck. An early
- 3:14Speaker 2: meeting with my dentist. His name is Barlow, and the
- 3:18Speaker 2: letter was to confirm the appointment. The cricket page is
- 3:21Speaker 2: beside the financial one, and I turned to it to
- 3:24Speaker 2: find if Surry was holding its own against Kent. But
- 3:28Speaker 2: go on, Watson, go on. It's a very superficial trick,
- 3:33Speaker 2: and no doubt you will soon acquire it.
