Sam: Hey there, and welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're cracking open the memoir of a woman who's basically a walking, talking legend, Cher. So Sophie, when you think of Cher, what's the first image that pops into your head?
• 0:16
Sophie: Honestly, it's that 1980s look, the black wig, the sequins, and the powerhouse voice. But this book strips all that away. It's called simply Cher, and it's the raw, unfiltered story of how a shy, awkward girl from poverty became one of the most enduring icons of our time.

Sam: And that's what got me. I expected a celebrity tell-all, but it reads more like a survival manual. She doesn't hold back on the messy stuff, the mistakes, the self-doubt.
• 0:47
Sophie: Exactly. She opens up about being born Cherilyn Sarkisian in 1946, with a mom who had her own unfulfilled dreams of stardom. Her dad was mostly out of the picture, and they moved around constantly because they couldn't afford stability.
• 1:04
Sam: She was tall and shy with this unusually deep voice, and kids were brutal about it. She learned early that being different was something to hide.
• 1:13
Sophie: But her mom planted this conviction in her that she was destined for something big. That belief stuck with her, even when everything around her was falling apart.
• 1:23
Sam: Then Sonny Bono walks in when she's sixteen. He saw her uniqueness as an asset, not a flaw, and he basically crafted her image, her sound, her whole persona.
• 1:34
Sophie: And together they created 'I Got You Babe,' which became this anthem of the 1960s. Suddenly, she's catapulted into fame she never imagined.
• 1:46
Sam: But here's where the book gets real. She talks candidly about the power imbalance with Sonny. He controlled the business, and she was the talent. She realized she'd traded one form of dependence for another.
• 2:00
Sophie: It's actually painful to read, how she woke up to the fact that Sonny was controlling, and she was trapped in a marriage that was more about image than love.
• 2:09
Sam: The split was messy and public, but it was also the start of her transformation. She went from being a star created by Sonny to a force driven by her own will.
• 2:19
Sophie: And she's brutally honest about her own role in it. She admits she allowed herself to be controlled because she lacked the confidence to stand alone. That kind of self-awareness is rare.
• 2:31
Sam: After Sonny, the industry wrote her off as a relic. But she pulled off reinvention after reinvention. She did the variety show, then she won an Oscar for Moonstruck, then she came back as a pop star in the 80s and 90s.
• 2:45
Sophie: Each reinvention wasn't just a career move, it was a declaration that she wouldn't be defined by anyone else's expectations. That theme of resilience is the heart of this book.
• 2:56
Sam: And she's equally honest about her personal life. Her marriage to Gregg Allman was a whirlwind of addiction, infidelity, and even violence. She doesn't sugarcoat the fear and confusion of loving someone so self-destructive.
• 3:13
Sophie: But then she writes about her kids, Chaz and Elijah, with such tenderness. Motherhood grounded her in a way nothing else did. It wasn't about performance or ambition, it was pure love.
• 3:26
Sam: The part that really hit me was her reflection on aging and beauty in an industry that's so cruel to women over forty. She's been a style icon forever, but she admits the maintenance is exhausting. The surgeries, the diets, the constant scrutiny.
• 3:44
Sophie: She's proud of staying relevant, but she questions if it's been worth it. There's this weariness when she talks about being judged by standards no man would ever face.
• 3:54
Sam: But through it all, she returns to resilience. She's been knocked down by critics, lovers, her own mistakes, but she always gets back up. She describes it as muscle memory, a habit she built as a kid.
• 4:08
Sophie: And her message is that there's no magic formula. It's just a stubborn refusal to give up. That's the takeaway that stays with you.
• 4:17
Sam: I also loved the behind the scenes stories. She talks about Bob Mackie with such affection, and about directors who believed in her and ones who dismissed her.
• 4:27
Sophie: But she also gets into the loneliness of fame, the difficulty of keeping real connections when you're treated like a commodity. It's poignant stuff.
• 4:36
Sam: And she's not done yet. She ends the book with this sense of openness, of possibility. She's still creating, still defying expectations. Aging as an opportunity, not a decline.
• 4:49
Sophie: For me, this memoir is a meditation on what it means to live with purpose and passion. It's a reminder that success is a journey, not a destination, and that the only person you can truly count on is yourself.
• 5:03
Sam: The thing I'm taking away is that resilience is a choice you make every day. You can't control what happens, but you can control whether you get back up.
• 5:13
Sophie: And if you want to dive deeper into Cher's world or explore more stories like this, the whole library is on the 7 Minute Books app. It has over 6,000 fiction and nonfiction titles you can read or listen to in any language, and it starts at just $2.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $19.99 for lifetime access.
• 5:37
Sophie: In the end, Cher's story is proof that you can reinvent yourself at any age, and that your past doesn't define your future. We'll see you in the next one.
