Speaker 2: Are you over there on the right coast?
• 1:26
  Speaker 2: I am, yes, I'm a virginia guy a virginia guy.
• 1:28
  Speaker 1: Well, that's good.
• 1:28
Speaker 1: Um I, when mars told me that we were going to have you on for the best cars for teens award, I thought, yeah, I have to tell you that for my daughter's 16th birthday, I bought her a 2007 Ford Focus two-door crank windows, five-speed, automatic transmission, cloth interior.
• 1:59
Speaker 1: It was bare bones all the way.
• 2:02
Speaker 1: That was in 2007 when I bought her that car.
• 2:06
Speaker 1: She still has that car and is still driving it this day just outside of Boulder in Golden Colorado, denver area, and it now has 185,000 miles on it.
• 2:21
Speaker 1: That's incredible it is, and so those kind of cars, I assume, still exist yeah, they, they do absolutely.
• 2:29
Speaker 2: Um, we're, uh, we tried to highlight vehicles that are going to be reliable, safe, um and uh, affordable, hopefully, yeah, yeah, affordable, good value, yeah, clearly, uh, you got the value part on that one I definitely did.
• 2:44
Speaker 1: I don't remember how much I paid for it.
• 2:45
Speaker 1: It was a repo, it had 1,200 miles on it and they somehow trailered this thing down to a Ford dealership here in town and I spotted it and I'm going huh, I'll go over there and make them an offer.
• 2:59
Speaker 1: They said we'll take it and it has been a great car for her.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: As a matter of fact, she's about ready finally to buy herself a new car.
• 3:08
Speaker 1: And I said so what are you going to do with the focus?
• 3:11
Speaker 1: And she says well, dad, I'm going to keep it.
• 3:14
Speaker 1: I can't get rid of it.
• 3:15
  Speaker 1: It doesn't.
• 3:16
Speaker 1: It's not worth anything.
• 3:17
Speaker 1: I think the most that she could ever get out of it is a thousand dollars.
• 3:20
Speaker 1: It's more of every fender and every door panel.
• 3:25
Speaker 1: Everything has been dented and it's probably got more bondo than the original car weighs on it, but it doesn't make any difference it's still painted bird car yep, and it still runs and works just fine.
• 3:37
Speaker 1: So, at any rate, let's get going.
• 3:39
Speaker 1: Where do you want to start?
• 3:41
Speaker 2: um, we can just uh start with the best suv for teens in the 20 to 25 000 category.
• 3:47
Speaker 2: Um, if you're watching this, uh, live the.
• 3:50
Speaker 2: Uh, it's right behind me the kia soul.
• 3:52
Speaker 2: Yep, I think if you have one takeaway from this, this is the car that should be.
• 3:57
  Speaker 2: It's very reliable.
• 3:58
Speaker 2: It starts at twenty thousand dollars.
• 4:00
Speaker 2: Um, it's got a ton of safety features that that was a big criteria in our scoring.
• 4:07
Speaker 2: It's got to have forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane keep assist.
• 4:13
Speaker 2: So this comes with it as standard.
• 4:15
Speaker 2: It does well in crash testing, kia Soul, it's a really great value, Zach.
• 4:21
Speaker 1: I want to tell you when I drove the car I've driven several of them since they were brand new and every time that they update and they send me one, I love that car.
• 4:30
Speaker 1: It rides great, it handles great, it's powered just right.
• 4:35
Speaker 1: There's so many good things going for that car I endorse that and it's got room and it's got room in it, yeah.
• 4:41
Speaker 2: More room than it looks like it has it's got a party bus.
• 4:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, it's got room.
• 4:45
Speaker 2: So a great car for teens, I agree, and we've got a little bit of a twofer here.
• 4:51
Speaker 2: The Hyundai Elantra in the $20,000 to $25,000 category, okay, and the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid in our $20,000 to $30,000 category.
• 5:00
Speaker 2: They're both great vehicles.
• 5:02
Speaker 2: Go with the hybrid if you want the fuel economy, um, but uh, very premium for for how the the vehicle's priced, um, like he said, rides nice and uh.
• 5:14
Speaker 2: A lot of standard safety features.
• 5:16
Speaker 2: They perform very well in crash testing, um and uh.
• 5:20
Speaker 2: The elantra hybrid in particular, it comes standard with hyundai link, which is Hyundai's telematic system.
• 5:25
Speaker 2: It's set like curfews for additional drivers.
• 5:33
Speaker 1: Well, that ought to tick them off pretty good.
• 5:35
Speaker 2: Right, yeah, but you can at least know they're not staying out too late, they're not driving too far from home, they're not speeding you can set a speed alert.
• 5:45
Speaker 2: So a lot of the other vehicles on this list have similar technologies, but that's just.
• 5:50
Speaker 2: Blue Link is what it's called for.
• 5:51
Speaker 1: Hyundais Sounds good Next.
• 5:54
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 5:54
Speaker 2: So we got the Hyundai Tucson and the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Another.
• 5:59
Speaker 2: You know a lot of Hyundais on this list.
• 6:01
  Speaker 2: Tucson's a great car.
• 6:04
  Speaker 2: We love them.
• 6:05
Speaker 2: It's the Tucson, the non-hybrid one, our best car for the money and best car for families as well.
• 6:11
Speaker 2: So we call it the triple crown Lots of space, great safety scores, lots of standard safety features.
• 6:19
Speaker 2: It's a really great option if you're looking for a vehicle in that segment.
• 6:24
  Speaker 2: The compact.
• 6:25
  Speaker 1: SUV.
• 6:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, I tend to agree with all these so far.
• 6:28
  Speaker 1: What else?
• 6:30
Speaker 2: So we've got the Subaru Legacy and the Subaru Outback.
• 6:33
Speaker 2: Really that surprises me.
• 6:36
Speaker 1: Oh really, it surprises me, because I always think of the Subarus that they're priced a little bit more expensively than, say, for instance, the Kias and the Hyundais.
• 6:44
Speaker 1: I would agree with that.
• 6:48
Speaker 2: Yeah, so they are a little bit, but you get so many safety features as standard, so it kind of works itself out.
• 6:55
Speaker 2: You also get standard all-wheel drive live in the snow belt.
• 6:59
Speaker 3: I know you guys don't really have to worry about that, but the all-wheel drive traction in the winter is really, really we were up in marquette last august, up in the up of michigan, and probably every third car on the road was, uh, either the outback or or the the other one, uh, very, very popular in that area because of the snow, because of of all the winter.
• 7:23
  Speaker 1: All-wheel drive.
• 7:24
Speaker 1: Katie's best friend actually has a Subaru Loves it.
• 7:28
Speaker 3: Subaru's in every corner, takes it up to the mountains all the time to go snowboarding.
• 7:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, anyway, go ahead.
• 7:34
Speaker 2: Great options there, and then, rounding off this list, in our $35,000 to $40,000 category, I think this is a car you guys like the Toyota Camry Hybrid.
• 7:43
  Speaker 2: It's very efficient 52 mpg.
• 7:48
Speaker 2: I believe it's value-priced for how many features you get and how refined it is.
• 7:54
Speaker 2: These are really great cars and perform very well.
• 7:59
Speaker 1: Zach, are you married?
• 8:00
  Speaker 1: Married I am.
• 8:01
Speaker 1: Do you have any children?
• 8:03
  Speaker 2: don't, I don't.
• 8:04
Speaker 2: We have a dog.
• 8:05
Speaker 2: We treat them like a child.
• 8:07
  Speaker 2: Well, I understand.
• 8:08
  Speaker 2: Do you want?
• 8:09
Speaker 1: children eventually yeah so all I can think of is zach is that I'm gonna tell katie here, honey, here's your car.
• 8:17
Speaker 1: At 16 years old, you you get Grandma and Grandpa's Camry.
• 8:21
Speaker 1: That is not going to go over very well, I'm sorry.
• 8:24
Speaker 1: I appreciate the recommendation there, but maybe if you really don't care about cars and you're just looking for mileage and here you go, okay, good luck Dependable.
• 8:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, good luck Dependable.
• 8:37
Speaker 1: So you'll be the one that'd be toting around your four other friends in the car going to the bars at the UT on Saturday night, won't you?
• 8:50
Speaker 2: Well, it's definitely going to last.
• 8:51
Speaker 2: It will for sure last quite a while, from the teen car to the young adult car.
• 8:55
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 8:56
Speaker 2: All right, well, you're not going to sell me on that one, I'm sorry.
• 8:58
Speaker 1: It may be a great car, but that's just not for me.
• 9:00
Speaker 1: But at any rate, okay, what else?
• 9:03
Speaker 2: yeah, so, um, we also have a used category, so these are 2019 to 2021 now you're talking my language, yeah so, uh, we have the subaru cross track hybrid, another subaru, yeah it's actually a plug-in hybrid If you want to plug in at home, drive to school, drive back.
• 9:21
Speaker 2: You might not even use any gas.
• 9:22
  Speaker 2: It's a great option.
• 9:24
Speaker 2: Again, all-wheel drive is standard.
• 9:26
Speaker 2: Lots of safety features.
• 9:28
Speaker 2: We've got the Elantra Hybrid in the used category as well.
• 9:33
Speaker 2: The 2021 model, like the new model, tons of of standard safety features.
• 9:40
Speaker 2: You can get the telematic system.
• 9:42
Speaker 2: Do some curfew, uh, speed alerts on there and um, it's, yeah, it's just a great option.
• 9:49
Speaker 2: Uh, for a first vehicle, I got it.
• 9:52
Speaker 2: No, I'm with you.
• 9:53
Speaker 2: The uh, the hyundai santa fe.
• 9:56
  Speaker 2: Uh, 2019.
• 9:57
  Speaker 2: Um, it's a midsize SUV.
• 10:00
  Speaker 2: Lots of space.
• 10:01
Speaker 2: Young people are just as active as anyone else.
• 10:05
  Speaker 2: Camping, brother, camping.
• 10:08
Speaker 1: You remember your college, you can remember your camping days.
• 10:11
  Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
• 10:12
  Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
• 10:14
Speaker 1: I don't know about you, but you might not be able to remember your camping days.
• 10:18
Speaker 2: if you're me, I know, yeah, there's a couple hazy ones for sure.
• 10:22
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it, yes.
• 10:25
  Speaker 3: Purple haze.
• 10:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's in our midsize SUV category.
• 10:30
Speaker 2: And then, rounding out the used vehicles, we've got the 2020 Sonata Hybrid and the 2021 Nissan Maximum Sonata Hybrid and the 2021 Nissan Maxima, so larger cars that are very value-oriented, lots of safety features, great crash testing.
• 10:51
Speaker 2: So you can feel good about putting your young teen driver in these cars as a first vehicle, and they should be just fine.
• 10:56
Speaker 1: I agree, and we have a used car dealership that we work with, emmons Brothers Motors, and they have be just fine.
• 10:59
Speaker 1: I agree, and we have a used car dealership that we work with, emmons Brothers Motors, and they have cars like that Extra clean and depending how low you want to go especially the used cars, obviously depending on mileage and they buy a range of cars.
• 11:13
Speaker 1: If you want low mileage, okay, we'll buy it.
• 11:15
Speaker 1: We've got plenty on the lot Low mileage, and they also have got some medium mileage cars as well and obviously there's a little bit more value in those.
• 11:25
Speaker 1: None of them have been wrecked or anything like that.
• 11:28
Speaker 1: They have a history.
• 11:30
Speaker 1: And there's also the certified pre-owns that you can get at your dealership that usually are bargain-priced and they also have a service record with them somewhere, usually speaking between 32,000 and 50,000 miles, maybe not even that much, but at any rate, I think that those are all good choices.
• 11:51
  Speaker 1: Like I said.
• 11:52
Speaker 1: You know I didn't have those choices when I bought Katie's car, but I will tell you that that little car has been through hell and back and it's still working.
• 12:02
Speaker 1: Yeah, all the way to the University of Alabama.
• 12:05
  Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right.
• 12:06
Speaker 1: Well, actually it started off at Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach and then went to the University of Alabama and now she's in Denver suburbs.
• 12:13
Speaker 1: But I'll tell you that one of the things that I think that you'll agree with, and you will too, jeff, and you too.
• 12:21
Speaker 1: I don't want to leave you out, but if you teach them to take care of their car, there's a problem.
• 12:27
Speaker 1: Get it fixed, change the oil on a regular basis and, you know, keep up with your car maintenance.
• 12:33
Speaker 1: That car will last you a lifetime.
• 12:38
Speaker 2: Just take care of it.
• 12:38
Speaker 2: Absolutely Mechanical sympathy, for sure.
• 12:42
Speaker 2: Cars are like a part of the family.
• 12:44
Speaker 2: You've got to listen to them, you've got to know when they're hurting and take care of it.
• 12:48
Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely Well, Zach, it's great to talk to you, thank you very much for joining us today.

• 13:08
Speaker 2: to expose yourself to that.
• 13:09
  Speaker 2: Yeah, we noticed.
• 13:10
Speaker 2: No, this is the fun interview, for sure, this is the fun.
• 13:12
Speaker 1: That's good, yeah, because we try to keep it on the light side over here.

• 16:15
Speaker 1: Yeah, despite Mr Morrison his little joke that he played on me this morning.
• 16:19
Speaker 2: Just kidding, it's okay.
• 16:23
Speaker 1: Listen, I'm like the elephant that doesn't forget.
• 16:26
Speaker 3: Oh, Elephants leave big messes too.
• 16:30
  Speaker 1: Yes, they do.
• 16:31
Speaker 1: All right time now for Jeff's Motor Minute.
• 16:34
Speaker 1: What do you got?
• 16:35
Speaker 3: This is a land speed record.
• 16:36
Speaker 3: Not many people do land speed records.
• 16:38
Speaker 3: They're very hard to obtain You've got to go through the Guinness Book of Records and all that.
• 16:42
Speaker 3: But this particular gentleman, dylan Phillips, has just set A Guinness World Record for the fastest wheelbarrow Clocked speeds of 52 miles per hour in a straight line Speed Week 2024 in Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire.
• 17:01
  Speaker 1: England.
• 17:02
  Speaker 1: Is this a?
• 17:02
  Speaker 3: four-wheeled wheelbarrow.
• 17:04
  Speaker 3: This is a one-wheel and it's got a cart.
• 17:06
Speaker 3: He explains how he does it.
• 17:07
Speaker 3: There's pictures of it, but I couldn't get the pictures because they're, you know, impregnated.
• 17:12
Speaker 1: Copyrighted, but yeah exactly.
• 17:14
Speaker 3: He built the motorized contraption in a shed in Pembrokeshire, England.
• 17:22
Speaker 3: The studio said it was fun and surreal.
• 17:25
Speaker 3: Dylan completed two runs in a speed trap of a 100 meter course.
• 17:29
Speaker 3: The machine is part wheelbarrow and part scrap scooter.
• 17:32
Speaker 3: Scooter, which is like a dolly the dolly.
• 17:34
Speaker 3: You sit at the end of the dolly and you strap the wheelbarrow on the front of it.
• 17:38
Speaker 3: It's got like a little uh you get pulled behind.
• 17:40
Speaker 3: Yeah, you're pulled behind, you're laying back on it.
• 17:42
Speaker 3: He said it's uncomfortable and terrifying.
• 17:44
  Speaker 3: Slows down.
• 17:45
Speaker 3: This year it's only got brakes in the front.
• 17:47
  Speaker 3: It's uncomfortable.
• 17:49
Speaker 3: It does leave you aching after a couple of runs because there's no suspension and it rattles you to bits.
• 17:53
Speaker 3: Uh, like many other madcap ideas, this one was dreamed up in a pub, go figure.
• 18:01
Speaker 3: No, yeah, ended up building a wheelbarrow for fun and a little practice runs messing around.
• 18:06
Speaker 3: He got up to 37 miles an hour.
• 18:08
Speaker 3: And then they said there's got to be a land speed record for this.
• 18:10
Speaker 3: And sure enough, they found one.
• 18:11
Speaker 3: Uh, and then they beat it.
• 18:13
