- 0:00Welcome to Unspoken Career Truths.
- 0:02I'm Lauren Levac Gilbert. And I'm Kyra Wood.
- 0:06And we're here to be the Co workers you can trust.
- 0:09In just 10 minutes, we'll cover the strategies you need, the
- 0:12mistakes to avoid, and the insider secrets no one tells you
- 0:16so you can show up with confidence at work.
- 0:21All right everyone, we are back for another Wisdom under Fire
- 0:24where we talk about a common phrase or saying and we share
- 0:29our thoughts and sometimes we both agree, sometimes we don't.
- 0:32Sometimes I take a random stance and want to rewrite the phrase
- 0:36but. I thought the point was to
- 0:38disagree. That is the point.
- 0:40But sometimes we don't, which is OK.
- 0:44Today's phrase hustle culture and more of like a culture than
- 0:49a phrase, I mean. I'll list me a term.
- 0:53A term. A hustle is a term.
- 0:55Yeah, I'll list some of the sayings we might hear often.
- 0:58Rise and grind, work hard, play hard, just hustle in general.
- 1:04There's a lot of T-shirts about that.
- 1:06So that's what we're talking about.
- 1:08And I have to say I will, I will take I'll take my stance on
- 1:12this. My opinion has changed over the
- 1:16years about this phrase. And I think that's what's really
- 1:17interesting. I would say when I was maybe
- 1:22like five years and took my career, I was like all about
- 1:24like hustle. I actually had like one of the
- 1:27signs on your wall that said hustle.
- 1:29It was like gold and it foil. I was like in it.
- 1:32I was like, yes, like I was going to do all these amazing
- 1:36things. I was going to like start my own
- 1:37company. I like worked a ton.
- 1:39It was I was like in it. I would say that my opinion has
- 1:44changed because I kind of burnt myself out a little bit by just
- 1:48focusing on the hustle. And so I think there's value in
- 1:53the hustle, but it doesn't really address some of the
- 1:57balance and it can be toxic. That's my thought.
- 1:59What do you think, Cara? It's really interesting
- 2:02actually. I definitely think that my
- 2:04relationship with the concept of hustle culture has changed.
- 2:08And I just just had a weekend with some friends that I've
- 2:12known since college and we were discussing just both the hustle
- 2:17culture as well as being in relationships with people who
- 2:21might be fully embracing the hustle culture.
- 2:23And I was the outlier because I am all for it.
- 2:27I actually really love to be super, super into my job and I
- 2:33admittedly define myself a lot of the times by what I'm doing.
- 2:38And I have at different times that has been incredibly
- 2:41difficult, like when I'm changing careers or when I'm
- 2:45not. I don't have, you know, a snazzy
- 2:47title at the moment, but I'm introducing myself at a party.
- 2:50But at the same time it's I, I feel like it, it's something
- 2:54that I really identify with that level of ambition and that level
- 2:58of just like full on lean, dare I say lean in.
- 3:02And so I think I would say that it's really valuable to know and
- 3:07recognize when you're interacting with someone who is
- 3:10kind of bought in and has drink in the kool-aid and values that
- 3:13in another person. And when you're surrounded by
- 3:16it. Because Lauren, to your point,
- 3:17it's not for everyone and it's not for every point in your
- 3:20life. And it also is something that
- 3:24can destroy and burn you out. So how do you, if you are
- 3:28someone like me that's like, Oh my gosh, This is why I got up in
- 3:31the morning. How do you do that in a way
- 3:34that's still sustainable and not the point isn't to burn you out.
- 3:39Like the whole no pain, no gain is not a thing.
- 3:43It's actually interesting, you know, you mentioned the phrase
- 3:45like work hard, play hard. I actually think there's a,
- 3:48there's an idea of balance in that potentially.
- 3:53And so I think I, I, I'm all for hustle culture only if it is
- 3:58something that gives you energy and it's something that you can
- 4:01do sustainably. I agree with that, fully agree
- 4:05with that. I think the the hustle culture
- 4:08of just like constantly push and like keeping up with the Joneses
- 4:13is not the right term because that's not what you would use
- 4:15necessarily in the workplace. But like feeling like you have
- 4:18to do it all and you like can't take a break or you can't relax.
- 4:21And I think what's really interesting, Cara, is knowing
- 4:24you, I would say like you're a super balanced person, but you
- 4:28do hustle. I think it's interesting because
- 4:31I have been, I have had direct employees who have been impacted
- 4:36by how seriously I take my job and I've had to really make sure
- 4:39that I don't project that expectation on them.
- 4:44And a lot of times like there, you know, you can have that
- 4:47toxic boss. And I have sometimes been this,
- 4:49I'm sure I have been this toxic boss to some people because
- 4:53they're like, have these real? I have really high expectations
- 4:56of myself and of everyone on my team.
- 4:59And so if you're in this world where all like work is all and
- 5:04there is no room for mistakes, I think that is a, as we were
- 5:10talking about toxic. But there is something about
- 5:12hustle and caring about what you do.
- 5:14I actually had an editor early on in my college newspaper who
- 5:19would say, let's take the job seriously, but not ourselves.
- 5:23And so I love. That.
- 5:25Yeah, I really love that. Shout out to Scott Sobach.
- 5:27I just, I really love that idea of just, again, taking the job
- 5:33seriously and I love working with people who are also taking
- 5:35the job seriously, but then realizing that in taking the job
- 5:39seriously, you need to allow some flexibility.
- 5:41And so thank you for saying that.
- 5:42I come across as balanced. But like I said, I know that I
- 5:46have been that boss that's holding people accountable and
- 5:49it's not always comfortable for everyone.
- 5:52I have so many thoughts about this, but my first one's going
- 5:55to be I'm going to give a shout out to to what my first boss
- 5:58Cape retain. I remember it was like a
- 6:01snowstorm or something and we were talking about like coming
- 6:03into the office for this like big meeting.
- 6:05And she said to me, she's like, Lauren, we're not neurosurgeons
- 6:09work from home. It's gonna be OK.
- 6:11Like. And that really stuck with me,
- 6:12right? Like, you know, you can care
- 6:14about your job, but at the same time, like you need to be
- 6:17healthy and you need to be safe and you need to make sure that
- 6:20like you're being a human first. So I agree with that.
- 6:24I think the the other thing you brought up was really great,
- 6:26Cara. I mean, I also have like really
- 6:29high expectations of people. I also have really high
- 6:32expectations of myself Whenever I make a mistake, I like wear it
- 6:35like a badge and I like tried and, and I'm like, Oh my gosh,
- 6:37this is a mistake that I made. Like I, I like tick market kind
- 6:40of thing. So when I was a, a, a boss and I
- 6:44had employees, it was really hard for me sometimes because I
- 6:47was like, well, you need to do this and this is when you need
- 6:49to get it done. And this is when we need it.
- 6:51And actually, I feel like being a boss helped me really better
- 6:56understand what that balance looked like, right?
- 7:00Because you have to have more empathy for other people and how
- 7:06they work. And people make mistakes and
- 7:08that's OK. And talking through it and
- 7:09figuring out what makes sense. But that was like a really eye
- 7:13opening piece for me. But I think what really shifted
- 7:17is when I was working like crazy, crazy hours and we just
- 7:23did an episode about buckets. I was ignoring all my buckets
- 7:25and I was like, this is great. Like I'm hustling, like I'm just
- 7:28like pushing through. This is getting amazing.
- 7:30And I was like, I feel fine. And then I just remember getting
- 7:34to a point and just being like, I am so tired.
- 7:36I cannot think straight. And this is just not, this is
- 7:39not what this is. And so to your point, I think
- 7:42redefining what hustle means for you.
- 7:45I consider myself someone who hustles in my job, but I also
- 7:49have very clear boundaries and so that's OK.
- 7:52That could be my hustle. Yeah, and I, I'm thinking of
- 7:56like the metaphor of, you know, you put your own air mask on 1st
- 8:00actually. Like you actually have to,
- 8:03you're no good if you only work the one day and it's the 24
- 8:07hours and then you're exhausted or dead.
- 8:09So, you know, you actually, I think of it as like as much as,
- 8:13oh, I want to give everything to this, some of the giving
- 8:16everything to this is sleeping so that the next day I can make
- 8:20good decisions the next day. And these projects are never,
- 8:23it's never a, you know, sacrifice yourself.
- 8:25I think of like professional athletes, like you have to take
- 8:28care of your body to actually show up on game day and do the
- 8:31best on the field. So, but I, I, there's so many
- 8:35times I think what we're talking about is like, how are you both
- 8:38interpreting and then internalizing the idea of hustle
- 8:41culture? Because if you're internalizing
- 8:45it as I have to keep pace with other people that I see around
- 8:49me and ignore anything that's going else that's going on in
- 8:53order to sort of like show up or be seen, then yeah, that can get
- 8:57toxic really fast. Because everybody's 100% looks
- 9:00differently depending on your experience, your skill level,
- 9:04and also just your energy for the day.
- 9:06And I think the important part about this is if you believe in
- 9:09hustle culture or not, it, it's what's right for you.
- 9:12You're not proving this to anyone else like it.
- 9:16It's defining what hustle means to you.
- 9:18And what hustle means to me is working really hard at my job,
- 9:22but setting boundaries and not exceeding those boundaries.
- 9:26And, and that's fine. I mean, it can be whatever it is
- 9:29that works for you. I think some things that I kind
- 9:32of was thinking about as we were talking about this episode as a,
- 9:36as a topic was like, if you're feeling guilty that you, that
- 9:40you're resting, that's not a healthy thought, right?
- 9:44Because you need to be able to rest and relax.
- 9:47If you're afraid to slow down, then you might fall behind.
- 9:50Like again, that that's not something that's sustainable.
- 9:53So like really understanding what are the thoughts that are
- 9:56going through your head? Are those healthy?
- 9:58Are those going to help you sustain whatever pace you're at
- 10:01now? And also like really being open
- 10:03about conversations about burnout or conversations about
- 10:07balance. I think that's become a lot more
- 10:10prevalent now. I think people have realized
- 10:13that you can't just push, push, push, push, push because we are
- 10:16humans who need to eat, sleep and exercise and have kind of
- 10:21other things that balance us out.
- 10:23Yeah. And I think recognizing kind of
- 10:25knowing like you're talking about boundaries, like I think
- 10:27knowing what kind of culture you're going to be happy with
- 10:31and excited by. I have friends that go into job
- 10:34interviews and say point blank, like, I'm replaceable here.
- 10:37I'm not replaceable at home. So this is my second place.
- 10:41This is not the most important thing to me.
- 10:43And like I said, for me, I love showing up at an office or a
- 10:48place where everyone's really taking the work seriously.
- 10:50When I have people who are kind of like not as passionate as I
- 10:56am about kind of like producing good work, it, it's demotivating
- 11:00for me. So again, that I am like, I'm
- 11:04all in for the hustle culture. But then I, I treat my rest as
- 11:09part of my work. It it helps sustain me to do
- 11:12work the next day. I love that and typical or in
- 11:15fashion. I'm going to rewrite the phrase
- 11:17to say define your hustle. So that's kind of my twist on
- 11:22that, on that hustle culture. So just key take away, there's
- 11:27really no problem with working hard and hustling, just making
- 11:30sure that you're defining it for yourself and you're finding
- 11:33balance and you're doing things that are sustainable for your
- 11:36well-being. Finding your balance, defining
- 11:39productivity, potentially setting the boundaries if you
- 11:42need it, and just doing it for you.
- 11:44And making sure that whatever you're doing is working for you
- 11:47and not to prove to other people or to kind of keep up, because
- 11:51that's never going to be something that will fulfill you.
- 11:55Yeah, totally. OK.
- 11:57Thanks everyone. That's a wrap.
