Latest / The Craig Way Show / Steve Sarkisian's SEC Teleconference
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: On Wednesday. That means it's SEC teleconference time. So let's
- 0:05Speaker 1: hear this is the reporters with long Worn's head coach
- 0:08Speaker 1: Steve Sarkeesian. This has a more regional air than the
- 0:12Speaker 1: Thursday media zoom or even the Monday press conference where
- 0:15Speaker 1: it's pretty much all local media. But this is sark
- 0:19Speaker 1: from the SEC teleconference earlier today.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Yeah, great opportunity to go on the road to restore
- 0:26Speaker 2: you know, historic rivalry here at the University of Texas,
- 0:29Speaker 2: one that Texas and Arkansas have battled for a long
- 0:33Speaker 2: long time, some great teams, some great games, and you know,
- 0:37Speaker 2: for this, for this rivalry to be restored, I know
- 0:39Speaker 2: so much is made in college football right now about realignment,
- 0:43Speaker 2: conference realignment and teams losing rivalries.
- 0:46Speaker 3: We we've picked up two great ones.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Of this being the first year with Arkansas, so looking
- 0:51Speaker 4: forward to the opportunity Saturday.
- 0:56Speaker 5: First off, we had a Tom Rphy the Arkansas Democrat.
- 0:58Speaker 6: Is that.
- 1:00Speaker 7: Andy Steve, I'm wondering what your take is on the
- 1:03Speaker 7: quarterback Taylor Green, what what dimensions he give to them?
- 1:06Speaker 7: And also his backup monte Kai Singleton's gotten enough action
- 1:09Speaker 7: that you probably could have a comment on him as well.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I think Taylor is a you know,
- 1:15Speaker 4: fantastic talent. You know, he's got obviously, has the size,
- 1:18Speaker 4: the arm strength, the ability to run the football and
- 1:22Speaker 4: quarterback driven runs, the ability to buy time, make all
- 1:26Speaker 4: the throws down the field.
- 1:27Speaker 3: He covers a lot of ground.
- 1:30Speaker 4: You know, a lot of times you watch the tape
- 1:32Speaker 4: and you like, how did he cover so much ground?
- 1:35Speaker 4: It doesn't look like he's moving that fast, but yet
- 1:37Speaker 4: he is, you know, a sixty six.
- 1:38Speaker 3: And thirty pounds, so really really good talent, you know. Obviously,
- 1:43Speaker 3: you know, the.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Backup is a little bit different build, more of.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Kind of that stocky running back style, but yet still
- 1:49Speaker 4: has the.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Ability to do what they do. I think coach Petrino
- 1:52Speaker 3: has done a great job.
- 1:52Speaker 4: With both of them and coach Pittman. I mean, anytime
- 1:56Speaker 4: you're you're avaging nearly three hundred yards passing in two
- 1:59Speaker 4: hundred yards rushing, that's that's a pretty good offensive football team.
- 2:02Speaker 3: And in their system, it definitely starts with the quarterback.
- 2:06Speaker 3: And last week or last.
- 2:07Speaker 7: Game, Arkansas gave up a bunch of passing yards and
- 2:10Speaker 7: the deep bow. I'm wondering just what your thoughts are
- 2:13Speaker 7: on taking on this defense.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Well, I think they're there are talented defense.
- 2:18Speaker 4: They've had two weeks to uh to kind of get
- 2:21Speaker 4: some things, you know, shirt up and cleaned up. I
- 2:23Speaker 4: know we're gonna get a great version of them defensively.
- 2:25Speaker 4: So you know, they got really good coaches over there,
- 2:28Speaker 4: So I don't think we can just assume that we're
- 2:31Speaker 4: gonna have that same luxury. You know, we're gonna have
- 2:33Speaker 4: to play really good football offensively. We're need to be balanced,
- 2:38Speaker 4: you know, and that's that's a challenge because a very
- 2:39Speaker 4: good upfront.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Neanxsas steep multa disas.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Hey, coach, hope you're doing well today, sir. I heard
- 2:53Speaker 5: you earlier in the on Monday, I mentioned about that
- 2:57Speaker 5: maybe not pivoting towards former players is talking because of
- 3:02Speaker 5: the emotions that they have. How do you walk that
- 3:05Speaker 5: line of who you want to talk to your team
- 3:08Speaker 5: during the season, coach, Uh.
- 3:10Speaker 3: I like to lean towards me.
- 3:14Speaker 4: That's not to take anything away from from anybody else.
- 3:17Speaker 4: You know, we've got some great people, some great speakers
- 3:21Speaker 4: that we bring in throughout the summer, throughout training camp
- 3:24Speaker 4: to speak to our team and do a fantastic job.
- 3:27Speaker 4: But when the season rolls around. I think the consistent
- 3:31Speaker 4: messaging throughout throughout the fall is important and that our
- 3:35Speaker 4: that our players understand why we're talking about specific things
- 3:39Speaker 4: on certain weeks. Uh So, generally I'm the one that
- 3:42Speaker 4: talks to our team from a motivational standpoint. Now that
- 3:44Speaker 4: the players talk as well, so I give them that credit.
- 3:48Speaker 4: But I but I do think that that the messaging
- 3:50Speaker 4: is important. But but again, we rely on a lot
- 3:52Speaker 4: of those outside speakers throughout the summer and throughout training
- 3:55Speaker 4: camp to get ourselves ready for the season.
- 3:58Speaker 5: And something Sam mentioned earlier in the teleconference, Coach, was
- 4:02Speaker 5: the energy in the building there in twenty one. Now,
- 4:05Speaker 5: I know you were on the short end of the stick,
- 4:07Speaker 5: but I just in terms of that rivalry in the building,
- 4:11Speaker 5: did you feel that intensity as well back in twenty
- 4:14Speaker 5: one in failible Coach?
- 4:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not sure if there was even a stick
- 4:18Speaker 4: for us to get a short end of that night.
- 4:19Speaker 4: We got our ass whips, so hopefully we play better Saturday.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Thank you, Coach Texas. Bob Hok. The Arkstil Democrat is.
- 4:32Speaker 8: A Hey, Steve, I don't know if I ever heard
- 4:36Speaker 8: that saying before that that's that's a good one. Hey, Lucas,
- 4:40Speaker 8: you know Arkansas's tight end. I think Texas offered him.
- 4:44Speaker 8: I don't know if you remember recruiting, and I know
- 4:45Speaker 8: you guys recruit a lot of big time players, but
- 4:48Speaker 8: number nine for our saw tight end.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Just wonder what your take is on him.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, he's a guy that definitely, you know,
- 4:55Speaker 4: he gets a lot of targets. You know that they
- 4:57Speaker 4: you know, I think again coach Petrino does a great
- 4:59Speaker 4: job of scheming and working to get people isolated one
- 5:03Speaker 4: on one and opening zones and and he's a huge
- 5:06Speaker 4: you know product of that. You know, it leads him
- 5:09Speaker 4: in touchdown receptions and he's a guy that has a
- 5:12Speaker 4: tight end. They move around and they create, you know,
- 5:15Speaker 4: he's really the primary on a lot of things that
- 5:17Speaker 4: they do.
- 5:19Speaker 8: And then now I know you're not all the way
- 5:20Speaker 8: through the SEC schedule, yeah, but you're you're a good
- 5:23Speaker 8: way through, and just wondering what what the grind has
- 5:26Speaker 8: been like compared to what's the reality that's been like,
- 5:29Speaker 8: compared to me, what the expectation was, how that's been
- 5:31Speaker 8: for y'all.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Well, you know, I think that that we had a
- 5:34Speaker 4: pretty good understanding coming in that there was going to
- 5:37Speaker 4: be a physical component to this right and and how
- 5:40Speaker 4: physical uh the game is and the SEC at the
- 5:43Speaker 4: line of scrimmage, and then this week's no different.
- 5:46Speaker 3: You know, Arkansas is very good at the line of scrimmage.
- 5:48Speaker 4: They have big people, they're they're built like a lot
- 5:52Speaker 4: of the rest of the SEC is built. I think
- 5:54Speaker 4: one of the one of the bigger challenges in this
- 5:55Speaker 4: conference is is the metal intensity that you have to
- 5:58Speaker 4: have week to week. There are no layups in this league.
- 6:02Speaker 4: You know, you have to come ready to play week
- 6:04Speaker 4: in and week out. Uh, and the moment, the moment
- 6:07Speaker 4: you don't, you get beat. And there's been some really
- 6:10Speaker 4: good teams in our league that have probably lost games
- 6:12Speaker 4: that they're looking back and they're kicking themselves that maybe
- 6:15Speaker 4: they weren't quite as ready to play. And so I
- 6:17Speaker 4: think that's probably the bigger challenge is getting that getting
- 6:20Speaker 4: our players every Monday in the right frame of mind
- 6:23Speaker 4: to prepare the right way, uh for the for the
- 6:27Speaker 4: task at hand, which part of which is again that
- 6:29Speaker 4: physical nature at the line of scrimmage.
- 6:32Speaker 3: Thanks Yep, Nexus, Kurt Bowles.
- 6:37Speaker 6: At least the Chronicle, Steve, because Taylor and Green's so big.
- 6:44Speaker 6: Are you're bringing in Vince Young to run the scout team?
- 6:47Speaker 3: I'd love to.
- 6:48Speaker 4: I don't know, you why is kind of busy right now,
- 6:50Speaker 4: but yeah, very similar the you.
- 6:54Speaker 6: Know, because he's such a threat to run. I have
- 6:56Speaker 6: a lot of Arkansas opponents, you know, run zone cover
- 7:00Speaker 6: to you know, keep their eyes in the backfield so
- 7:03Speaker 6: they're you know, not in man demand running down the
- 7:05Speaker 6: field away from him.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Well, I think, you know, I think everybody's you know,
- 7:09Speaker 4: tried different things, some successful, some not so successful. Right,
- 7:15Speaker 4: they don't average, you know, five hundred yards a game offensively,
- 7:18Speaker 4: you know, if people are shutting him down. And so
- 7:21Speaker 4: I think, like anything, when to play good defense is
- 7:24Speaker 4: one you try to develop a plan that you know,
- 7:27Speaker 4: you has a solid foundation and that you have the
- 7:30Speaker 4: auxiliary calls off of that off of that plan so
- 7:34Speaker 4: that you're not just a sit and duck, you know,
- 7:36Speaker 4: sit and target, you know, because you know, again they've
- 7:38Speaker 4: got great experience on that on their on their coaching
- 7:41Speaker 4: staff with coach Pittman and coach Petrino, and so you know,
- 7:45Speaker 4: I think I think varying looks is going to be key.
- 7:48Speaker 4: I think putting ourselves in position to guard them because
- 7:51Speaker 4: they have plenty of weapons to throw the ball to.
- 7:55Speaker 4: But yet you know, making sure that that we try
- 7:57Speaker 4: to try to contain him against not only the designed runs,
- 8:01Speaker 4: but again the off schedule runs, and so, like I said,
- 8:04Speaker 4: it's a heck of challenge.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Thank you, thanksus and more.
- 8:09Speaker 9: Richardson of Orange Bloods, good afternoon, coach.
- 8:15Speaker 3: I was Kocha.
- 8:16Speaker 10: Quinn has played in a lot of obviously big games
- 8:19Speaker 10: on the road with you guys throughout his career. Talk
- 8:24Speaker 10: about from your perspective what you've seen from him when
- 8:28Speaker 10: he goes in on the road. It seems like he's
- 8:30Speaker 10: pretty unflappable. And is there a road game that kind
- 8:34Speaker 10: of sticks out to you the most that you're really
- 8:37Speaker 10: impressed with, whether it's for preparation or how he played well?
- 8:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I think again, I think his general demeanor is
- 8:47Speaker 4: helpful when you go on the road. You know, Quinn
- 8:49Speaker 4: is a very calm, cool customer. You know, he doesn't
- 8:53Speaker 4: he doesn't get too emotional, too high, too low. It's
- 8:56Speaker 4: pretty even keel, and I think that's important when you're
- 8:58Speaker 4: on the road. I think that's important for us as
- 9:01Speaker 4: a team. I think poise and composure is always critical
- 9:05Speaker 4: when you're on the road, and he exemplifies that, and
- 9:09Speaker 4: so that's helpful. I think probably the best one that
- 9:12Speaker 4: I can recall is going into Tuscaloosa a year ago.
- 9:15Speaker 4: I felt like he was really dialed in and he
- 9:18Speaker 4: was he was really just in a great frame of mind,
- 9:21Speaker 4: and I think that that permeated throughout the entire offense
- 9:24Speaker 4: that day. That night, you know, we had no pre
- 9:27Speaker 4: snat penalties in a very tough environment, which tells me
- 9:30Speaker 4: we were poised, we were composed, but we were focused,
- 9:33Speaker 4: you know, the right type of mental intensity needed in
- 9:35Speaker 4: that environment.
- 9:36Speaker 3: And that's what it's going to take here Saturday as well. Texas.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Chip Brown of course, twenty four to seven. Hey, Steve,
- 9:52Speaker 3: I know you mentioned you, you.
- 9:53Speaker 9: Know, wanted to get the outside zone going, and uh,
- 9:57Speaker 9: what what do you think it is?
- 9:58Speaker 3: It's sort of held it back. We're just we're just
- 10:02Speaker 3: not in sync, you know.
- 10:04Speaker 4: And and like any style of running game that you have,
- 10:08Speaker 4: timing and being in sync is is really important, and
- 10:12Speaker 4: confidence is really important.
- 10:13Speaker 3: And so whether it's angles on blocks, whether it's.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Run timing with the running back and the offensive line,
- 10:20Speaker 4: whether it's vision by the runners, whether it's you know,
- 10:23Speaker 4: our combination of blocks on the front side, our combination
- 10:26Speaker 4: of blocks on the backside, it just it just hasn't
- 10:28Speaker 4: quite been in sync. And so you know, it's, like anything,
- 10:31Speaker 4: we've got to emphasize it more. We've got to put
- 10:33Speaker 4: in the time and the effort, which I think that
- 10:35Speaker 4: we're doing, and then we got to start to find
- 10:38Speaker 4: our rhythm there again.
- 10:39Speaker 3: And you know, I talked a lot about.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Going into last week's game about finding our mojo as
- 10:43Speaker 4: an office, which I think that we did. And this
- 10:46Speaker 4: week it's been about, Okay, how do we how do
- 10:48Speaker 4: we get back to our timing and execution of our outside.
- 10:52Speaker 9: Zone because at some point, obviously you're going to need
- 10:56Speaker 9: to run it against seven and eight man boxes and
- 10:58Speaker 9: you've had the rotation at running back, and it's it's
- 11:02Speaker 9: it's been a lot, a little little different this.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Year than in years past. I'm not sure what you're
- 11:08Speaker 3: asking me.
- 11:08Speaker 9: Well, just I mean, that's how difficult has it been
- 11:12Speaker 9: to have the rotation and running back and trying to
- 11:16Speaker 9: sync everything up and knowing that you know, to kill
- 11:19Speaker 9: the clock late in the game, you're gonna have to
- 11:21Speaker 9: run it against seven and eight man boxes.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Or we can throw it. I still don't know what
- 11:25Speaker 4: you're asking me. But next question, just all your time.
- 11:30Speaker 4: So thank you today, thank you.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Okay, that's what we call in the business. And and
- 11:35Speaker 1: Ender ended his time. It was the last one anyway,
- 11:39Speaker 1: there So all right, as Logboard's head coach Steve Sarksian
- 11:44Speaker 1: from the SEC teleconference and up next, and by the way,
- 11:50Speaker 1: we'll talk some more Texas Arkansas in the three o'clock
- 11:52Speaker 1: hour with Chuck Barrett, Razor Backs and play by play voice.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Up next, we bring you today's edition of Inconceivable here
- 11:59Speaker 1: on sports Radio i AM thirteen under the Zone in
- 12:01Speaker 1: the IHR Radio app.
