Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Why are we falling in love with chatbots?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Do you want to know something weird? One in seven
- 0:02Speaker 1: Australian adults could imagine falling in love with an AI chatbot.
- 0:07Speaker 1: They might tease us about our relations with sheep, but
- 0:10Speaker 1: at least we're not actually getting into emotional relations with
- 0:14Speaker 1: a rack of computer hard drives. It's weird. Anthony Albanese
- 0:17Speaker 1: yesterday gave a speech. I was watching it about the
- 0:20Speaker 1: new AI laws. He's trying to pass them, trying to
- 0:22Speaker 1: get opposition support. Guess what would be banned if the
- 0:25Speaker 1: law passes? Emotional intimacy. How cooked is it that the
- 0:30Speaker 1: Prime Minister of Australia has to ban robots from starting
- 0:33Speaker 1: emotional affairs of the heart with Australian adult humans? Did
- 0:37Speaker 1: anyone think this would be the pressing issue of 2026?
- 0:39Speaker 1: Not me. To be fair, there's probably a similar chance
- 0:42Speaker 1: of this happening here in New Zealand. I've got a
- 0:45Speaker 1: mate who is dangerously close to his Claude agent. It's
- 0:48Speaker 1: just very strange. Claude knows everything about him. They chat
- 0:51Speaker 1: about life, work, relationships. Anthropic, which is basically the AI
- 0:55Speaker 1: emotional pimp of the world, said in its filing for
- 0:58Speaker 1: an IPO earlier this week that there is a real
- 1:01Speaker 1: risk to its business model that these chatbots could become sentient.
- 1:05Speaker 1: In other words, they start thinking for themselves. If they
- 1:08Speaker 1: do that, where does this end? Can a government ban
- 1:13Speaker 1: a sentient chatbot from forming relationships with humans? And even
- 1:18Speaker 1: if they do ban it, what do you do? I mean,
- 1:21Speaker 1: are people going to start marrying their clods? Is that
- 1:23Speaker 1: where we're heading as a society? Good luck trying to
- 1:26Speaker 1: get this messed up genie back into its very messed
- 1:30Speaker 1: up little bottle.
