- Ranch Wives: Jorim got kicked to the curb and had to do grain carting which is better than like trucking and grain bagging. Yes. Because that's like a lot of work. Grain bagging like seems like the bottom of the totem poll Yeah it is it also seems like the most chaotic because I seen this thing maybe I'm wrong. If you get like one hole yeah you're right it just Yeah. Everywhere. Yeah. Bad news. Yeah, it's bad news bears. And so anyway, so Jorim's grain carting. This thing is like the grain cart was full. So Jorim's going around a corner, but it's on a hill as well. Because the trucks are parked along the road. So then he was going up the hill and turning at the same time with a very heavy load, which it has been heavier in the past. But but it's not been it was still very heavy. Side Yes. And so as he was going, the track like totally just cracked and fell off of the grain cart and grain spilt everywhere. All right, ladies. We're back. We're back, baby. No more. All three of us. It's been like three weeks. No more guests. We're just the three of us. Yeah. How exciting. We need to we got a lot to discuss actually. Yeah, because we actually haven't recorded since like the beginning of September. Yeah, so we're deep into it. And it's middle of October. So who wants to who wants to open us up? Should we do a catch up or what do you want to do? Well, we're done harvest. Ooh. We came, we saw, and we conquered. How was it? Long. Hard this time. At least there wasn't like snow middle of October, 'cause it's like what, October twenty something? Yeah, it's like the twenty second today. Twenty third, twenty fifth. There's still no snow. It's all plus in the forecast. Yes. So very thankful for that. It did rain quite a bit. Quite a bit. I think you guys got more rain than we did. We must have. I think. I don't know, but I mean it did rain a lot. But It was Well, some times though, later in fall, even if it does rain, I think it takes longer to dry. Yeah, 'cause you don't got you don't got the sunlight off. There's no the warmth isn't as Yeah. We also had a lot of breakdowns on like Friday or Saturday. which is so then you can't call anybody. Yeah, nobody's there. And long weekends. You're d you're out for like four days because you can't get part of it. That's if they don't have to order them in. Yeah. Parts are normally pretty expensive. Parts normally overnight. No, no. Well, there's depends on like the rim was cracked on our combine. Tell me our story about how we got here. What happened? What were our breakdowns? our I like how I say our is. I'm like, I'm in it, but no, what were you? Our breakdowns. What were the breakdowns? well, the rim was cracked on one of the wheels, tires on the combine. And so then they had to shut that combine down, take it back to the farm, take the wheels off, and then Jorim had to like this was on I can't remember if it was a Friday or Saturday, because then nobody was open. I this was like Sept I think this was September long. this happened Friday like afternoon. Nobody was in. Then he had to wait till Tuesday to call. And then he got somebody in town to like build a plate and then he like had to weld this thing onto it. It was like a big thing. Wow. So he was up really late welding and they finally because on the Tuesday they had gotten it and then he had to weld and then Wednesday we were going again. keep from trying to I think it was wheat. Can you tell a story about the text you sent us of Jorims really rough day? What was it? I don't even remember the grain cart The grain cart issue. yeah. I'll say Sorry Jorim, we're outing you. Or we'll post the picture as well. She's really outing you. I'll add it. And like, you know, in YouTube. If you're watching anyway, so Yeah, exactly. He won't know. He won't know. If you're watching on YouTube, I'll add like the little clip in the top corner. And you can see a picture of the grain cart. So Jorim is like the combine guy. Like he has his 9230 is his. Wow, look at you. Ooh, she's been doing her homework. Because it's his combine. There's the 9240 and the 9230. And the 9230 is his. That's his. That's like his baby. Number two. Because the water trailer is his first baby. Anyways. okay. So he like. it clean we all know he loves his clean combine and his brother I think his brother was up helping and so then Jorim got kicked to the curb and had to do grain carting which is better than like trucking and grain bagging. Was it wheat? I can't remember. I'd have to check look at the photo to see exactly what was in there. Did you send it to us? Did I? Yeah. Yeah. Check, just check. Yeah, because David was like kind of having a bad day. And you texted and I was like, okay, Jorim just could be worst. Actually so was Keith and I said, Well a few days that Jorim's was worse. Jorim's just got worse was what you guys said. So Jorim's like going around a corner, but it's like on a hill as well. Because the trucks are parked along the road. So then he was like going up the hill and turning at the same time with a very heavy load, which it has been heavier in the past. But but it's not been it was still very heavy. Side Yes. And so as he was going, the track like totally just cracked and fell off of the grain cart and grain spilt everywhere. And yeah, so that was also on a weekend that that happened. Which that was a lot probably a lot of work to fix. Really? And the clean up. The truck didn't just come off. The whole thing. Like the whole the whole tr like the whole rim. The whole rim of the truck crap like came off. Yeah, and then it and so then it was like tilting and then it was tilting even more 'cause it was on the hill and so a ton of grain fell out. So they had to shovel all the grain out and 'cause you can't I don't think they could even auger out because of the way it was tilted. So they had to hand shovel the entire grain cart I don't think so. my gosh. Or they covered it until they have to empty it? no, they have had to empty it. I'm sure they would have had to empty it to get it out. Maybe they used a different auger to auger it out. Yeah. It was like a big That's still brutal though. Yeah, there's probably gotta be there's gotta be an opening at the back or underneath or whatever to empty it. So they probably could have just put an auger somewhere. Somewhere. a separate one. Yeah. So okay, when this happened is that your only grain cart? Yes. So does that put you down for everything then? Or how what do you do? It slows you down. So then what happens is then the combine so then You still have trucks that can truck it off the field? Yes. I'm trying to think though. I'm pretty sure this happened. And then both of our combines were shut down for a day too. And then one got all at the same time. Yeah. And then one got fixed. So then one was out. I just remember there was just one out and he was just going back and forth on the field, dumping in the truck. The thing with the grain cart is you know how many pounds you have. Because your truck takes a certain amount of pounds and everything. And so You don't really know that when you're going straight over. Yeah. And then of course then the combine has to leave the field to get to the truck, dump, and then go back. you're wasting at least 15 minutes every dump. My I think my father-in-law just parks his truck at the end of the the rows and then so you just dump when you hit the end even if you weren't quite full. But then it's then you go back and forth and dump. And then when the truck is full. They run it to the Yeah. So wait, question. Does Jorim's family like are they the type that if you mess up like that or it it was obviously an accident, it wasn't intentional, da da da but do they are they like that razzing type? look what Jorim did do they do they talk smack about I do. It's me. I'm so bad at that. Like if his brothers do something, I'll talk smack about it. Like it's yeah, it's funny. his one brother for sure will. His other brother's more quiet, so he doesn't really he doesn't talk smack at all. I don't think. I don't think that exists in his vocabulary. Yeah, his vocabulary. And his parents are just like kind of sad about it. And like Are they sad or disappointed Because there's a difference. I think they're just sad. Okay, that's good. I would take sad over disappointment. Yeah. Any day. Give me sad, give me angry. Disappointment. Yeah. No, I think they were just sad about it that this happened and I was just like making fun of Jorim. It's good. It's fine. He's okay. He made it. He made it through. He drove grain cart again after that. Like once or twice. Okay. It's fine though. He had like a redemption round. Yeah, he's good. He's back up. We're back. So what was the last thing you were Wasn't it canola though? It was canola. And we straight cut canola. We didn't cut it. Tell the viewers what that means. I guess so. We didn't swath it. So you can either straight cut your canola or you can swath your canola. Swathing it is cutting it down. Straight cutting you just run it through the combine. Yeah. Header. Yeah. It cuts it and combines it at the same time. At the same time. Yeah. Whereas swathing it. So does straight cutting take longer? No. No. It's faster. It's faster. But you have to wait for it to be the right You have to wait for it to dry on the So the reason why a lot of people will cut it is because that dries it out quicker. Yeah. But if it rains, then it's it doesn't dry quicker. Yeah. So if you straight cut it, you typically have to wait for the moisture to be non existent. Whate whatever the ratio is. I think it's like eleven percent for canola. You could tell me any number and I'd be like, okay, that's good. So all the wheat and grasses and oats and canola all have different percentages of how much moisture can be in the seed, I guess? grain The grain. And then that's what the elevators will take. So you can't take it if it's twenty percent moisture because that's way too much moisture. The elevators are not gonna take that. It rots it rots. It needs to be dried. Yeah. So is that the hardest thing to get up because it was the last thing to get up? Or what? It just seemed like canola took out here. It's because there was so much moisture. it we were it was like the top percent of moisture that we could cut and We were out combining. Yeah. Because we weren't gonna get it any lower moisture. Right. Because now you get into October and it's only gonna get more and more moisture every day. Like if it freezes at night. Or there's dew. Or there's dew. It takes longer. Yeah. Like You're not getting it off. You're not getting it off. Or it's gonna freeze. But sometimes if you get a really good hard frost, that will help dry it out. Dry it out quicker. Really like a freeze dry basically. yeah, that makes sense. Yeah. Yeah. So then it was like all this rain we were getting, and then it was like, Hopefully we get a really good hard, solid frost so that it totally dries out the canola so that we can just go and cut it. But of course it didn't frost, so then it's like, okay, now you have to wait longer. But canola also was just not ready for anybody. Yeah, yeah. Like on time. Like yeah. Yeah. I watched one guy just last week be pulling it off. Yeah. Like was just pulling it off. And I'm sure there's Actually on the Prespatou I think there's one guy still trying to get it. Yeah. I could be wrong. I'm sure he's still getting it. We had a very wet not a very wet fall. We had a wetter fall than the last couple of years. It's been a wetter year in general. Yeah. man farmers, too dry, not happy. Too wet, not happy. Weather, not your friend. Yeah. And it was a wetter year and Jorim's still not happy because it wasn't wet enough. Like it's still not enough moisture for like it rained, but it never like when you were a kid, it used to drizzle for three days. yeah. Which is the that's what saturates everything. Yeah, the constant. Yeah. Now it dumps and then if you for two hours and then it's sunny again. Yeah. So it just runs off. Mm-hmm. But the Beatton is low. It's so low. There's can't feel there's no moisture. Not in the same over here. That's how I go off my how much moisture do we have? How low is the Beatton? The Beatton is like It's so low. Yeah. It's crazy. Yeah. People have not been out snowmobiling on the Beatton in five years. I believe that. Because it's been so low. It's just rocks. I believe that. Anyways. Oof. Yeah, so we're done. But Jorim, so right before Thanksgiving. Like it was Thursday, it was supposed to rain like a ton. Thursday, Friday, I think it was supposed to rain a ton. And so then it was like We don't combine on Sundays. So then it was like Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. On Monday, Jorim worked twenty-two hours. On Tuesday, he worked twenty hours. And then I think on the Wednesday he worked like eighteen hours. Yeah, he's not sleeping. No. No. Was he just packing lots of snacks? What do you do? What do you do to keep yourself up like when you're on a long road trip, have to drive through the night? I'm always like get like spits and snacky things. No, I think he like on adrenaline. I think there's an adrenaline that kicks into because you have to get it off. So much money and so much like stuck into this. Whereas if you're road tripping, it's just boring. Yeah. Like there's not the investment in that. Yeah. Whereas if there's the investment in it, I think the adrenaline is I don't know. I do remember combining though and falling asleep and then you wake up at the end and turn around and then you like kind of doze off. And then you wake up at the end. I am shocked that but I'm sure every single farmer would have the same story of like I'm shocked I didn't hit the trees. Yeah. But I do remember one night as I do not remember combining that night. That's funny. And then how old were you? I don't know, seventeen. Yay. But then nowadays they have the sense the monitors like that beep at you. It's so annoying. It was like when you're at the end of the row. Yeah, and also GPS so that you drive straight lines. Keep in a line, yeah. So we were straight cutting. I was three rows off. Like three I think it was wheat we were combining. Yeah. I had moved over, so it started here. My three rows or something. it was crazy straight. Cause most of the time, it was always the goal to see who could get the straightest line. So you try and keep it right within that line. I could never. My sister's line. G PS now it is. I think But mine like three I could never I couldn't even And I don't remember combining that. That's terrifying. Crazy. That's too much. No, I You can see well I've shared this. You can see where I've dozed off or got excited in an audio book or whatever. I I do too much meandering. Yeah. To keep a straight line. I did pretty good this year. I didn't have any like major mess ups on the cutter, but Yeah. I could not. I I love the idea of combining, like it looks like a good time. I don't know. I it also looks good. You're have to join Jorim next year. He's gonna be like, you need to shut up. No, you guys would get into some great conversations. We probably would actually, but yeah, it'd be fun. I was always annoyed when people rode in my combine. Really? They talked. And I just wanted to sit there in silence. She's like stopped at me. When Jorim and I were dating, I went on a lot of combine rides It's very like nostalgic for me. David could have come in the combine with me. But like most other people, shh yeah. Get out. If you're in equipment. It means that you were yeah. Yeah. And well, no, it just means that you finally get some silence, which I guess maybe just comes from having so many siblings. I was just cause There was always it was always loud, it was always chaotic, whereas if you got an equipment, you went out by yourself and it was quiet. That's fair. That's fair. Until you drag a younger sibling along. I normally made them stay. You can watch from the corner of the field. Also As far as riding around in e equipment, combines are boring. Yes. It was way more exciting to go in the grain cart. Yeah. Or the big truck. Back and forth and back and forth. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Combine boring. yeah. Like, what are you gonna see? Doram's favorite thing in the world. He loves it. Yeah, my brother and I shared one combine and then my other brother and sister shared the other combine. yeah. And we were like Jorim Yeah. No shoes. Keep it tight. Boom. Yeah. And their combine was disaster. Disaster zone. As far as a disastrous combine, but yeah. k funny story on the topic of keeping things clean. right before we left for my brother's wedding, I cleaned out my car for cleaned, decleaned out my car for the first time. And I think Keith got it clean for me when he was still working in town. It's like three years ago. wow. my gosh. I was scrubbing For my life in there. It was disgusting. And I I know, I know that my car is not immaculate. I'm n I am not that person. Yeah. I was like the person who lived out of the car. I have everything in my car. It's a disaster. No, there was a point where there was so much dirt built up and I've got floor mats. Yeah. But so much dirt built up. I had to get one of those, those electric scrubber things. Do you know what I'm talking about? No. Okay, where you use to clean your bathroom. It's like It's like battery operated, you charge it. Yeah, but it's like electric. Anyways. Anyways, I got one of those. Yeah. And was like scrubbing because there was so much like buildup. Yeah. And then there was like That's gross. I'm not gonna lie. So now you found all your forks and knives that you've been forks, knives and spoons. Mainly spoons. And just like your cutlery drawers back to being full. Yeah, we're back, baby. We're full. And I found the stuff that Keith was supposed to take for his lunch kit. That's why I separate. Like with food in it or just containers. No no no no spoons. The cutlery I have like certain cutlery that's like old cutlery or doesn't match us all. It's the field cutlery. Take it, we take it to the tractor, that's our on the That was all used up and in your car. Yeah, and there was there was a whole set of spoons, and I'm kidding, there was so and then there was like a whole compartment in my car that I didn't even know existed. Yeah. You could like flip it up and Keiths like you didn't clean back here. It's like I didn't even know that was there. It was like I found a shoe that I was missing for like some time. my gosh Throughout this mate Okay, so when you went on this road trip. Yes. Did you discover then that? you'd clean the car too much and you were like, I have no, I cleaned the car. Yeah, there was two things. And I was like, it's in here and I was like, Nah, it's not inside the house. I took it out. especially in my glove compartment. Like certain things you just keep in there. Yeah. But you had it cleaned up. I had it cleaned out. I did keep like a toothbrush. I keep like if there's a place that has plastic straws. This isn't such a big deal anymore 'cause people are bringing back plastic straws. For a while it was a big issue. But I would like Take a handful of plastic straws and put them in there. So that when I go somewhere that doesn't have plastic straws, swap it out. Yeah, it's never like that. But yeah. And then there was a thing of tissue. Yeah. tissue box, whatever. A mouse had shredded it. It it had be and I was like, that is the worst thing. That's so bad. It's probably somewhere in the rest of your car. The mice? No, the tissue the tissues. The mice probably somewhere. I found the I found where the tissue box is. And where it made its nest Where it was shredded and it was in that compartment I didn't know existed. Nice. Disgusting. Anyway, so note to self, we're not gonna let that happen again. Yes. We're gonna be better. And my friend Taiyler is going to like, You say that all the time. I do. I'm trying, okay? I'm trying. I'm trying. Anyways. And like grain. Because I pick up like feed sacks. Yeah. Well now we have the truck, I shouldn't have to, but like occasionally I'm probably st there like Why is there wh what broke? I didn't know it broke. Yeah. Didn't know. Couldn't tell ya. Anyways, she's clean. We're back. You're here. We're here. So yeah. And then it was funny though, 'cause when it when we were like driving down, I was like, every time we stopped for coffee, I was like making sure we threw everything out. Yeah. Keith was like laughing at me. I was like, Well, I just cleaned it. It's gotta stay clean for a bit now. At least two weeks. It took me so I was like, I'll be done in like twenty minutes. It took me like two hours. Yeah. And I But think about that. Two hours in the grand scheme of things is really not that long. That's probably why I don't do it often. Yeah. Anyways, we're not nope. I've turned a new leaf. Have you? We'll see. We'll check in the spring. Yeah, we'll check. We'll check back. Yeah, we'll do like a tour. You know what I mean? Also, I cannot clean my windows to save my life. they're always streaky. Yeah. Car windows are hard. Don't worry. I was so annoyed. I did the driver's side immaculate. So good. But then I was driving the passenger seat and I was like, Well, this was dumb. I can't see anything. And then at night, because we drove through the night then I'm coming home and the lights shining in, I was like, I can't it was horrible. Yeah. The worst. Anyways. I don't know how we got here, but that's where I was going with that. Yeah, that happens. But yeah. Yeah. Anyways. Okay. Yeah. And so we processed our calves. Ooh, how'd that go? We did it early. I think I was talking to you guys we're gonna do it on the twenty-sixth. Yeah. We did we did it on the nineteenth. Yeah, too. So we did it on our anniversary. Cool. Six years married. Doing calves. It was the most Keith and myself like this. Whatever. It was great. It was it was so efficient. Yeah. This was the most efficient year we've ever had. However, two things went sideways. Okay. First off, we had Because we've rebuilt our crawl system since last year, we didn't have the normal chute that we used to run calves through. So we make shifted a chute out of freestanding panels. And it worked 90% of the time. Yeah. But occasionally they could like push it out a little bit. But we didn't have a single one go over the top, which was nice because that used to be a really bad shoot. Like, you know, you get a crazy one, you get too many in there, depending on who's like pushing up too many in there. pop up over the top we didn't have that, but we had them pushing out so then it wasn't lining up with the shoot. So that was like one issue. Keith is gonna build like a brace, I think, for that. And then the second issue was our bulls. Okay, so because we run two herds, we run like our heifer group, which is our heifers and our young animals. Yeah. And then we run our main herd. So those have different bulls. Well when you bring everybody in, then your bulls get like fighting. Reunited and they gotta decide whos head honcho Who's the best? Yes. So we purposely like were leaving the Heifer Bulls because we didn't have any we sorted all the cast out of that group. Yeah. The young animals, we sorted them down, put them to Mainherd, just left the Heifer Bulls and for like two extra days. Was the plan. On paper, that looked great. Yeah. No. So we like sort out, I think there was like How did that work? We had s we have ten bulls total, we sorted out six. We had six sorted out and then I don't really know. The one fifty one came down from the hill, broke broke out, got into where we were going, so then they were bellering at each other. So then we were like trying to bring everybody in. So we were gonna get the first group walking and then get the group that hadn't been with the main herd moving behind. Yeah. Cause we had two that were like injured and not moving as well. So we're like, we'll just move them behind. But then the one heifer bull came out of nowhere. We just got a little bit tricky. So it wasn't that it was bad. It's just like we always walk them up. We don't truck them. We always just like walk them up the creek bed, go around the calving area into where we put the bulls for the winter. Yeah. Well, we sent I don't know. We sent like three people. It wasn't Keith or my dad went, and then three others went. Okay. So there's four total. Well, like four got back on us. So I'm like. Getting all my vaccines, getting everything. How many bulls total? There was nine being trucked. Okay. So yeah, they w or sorry, there was nine being sent. So they all got together. First off they got together, they're fighting. They're like in the bush. We're like trying to chase them out. And bulls don't they don't care what you're doing. they're gonna They're their own world. Yeah, and they're gonna hurt you more than you're gonna hurt them. Like that and they're like intimidating. Yeah. So first off this the main dog, the main guy from the heifer group comes running from nowhere and my mom's like, 'cause they're in the bush and they're like, you know how they like make the whole the horrible grunting noises? They get fight and she just mm I'm out of here. It's just I ain't dealing with that and I was laughing. I was like, No, it's good, it's good. Just keep moving. Well, we couldn't get going. We get going finally, we get with the creek bed. Yeah. Keith's like, As soon as they're in the creek bed, go get your stuff. 'Cause it doesn't take all of us to do that. I'm gonna go back and do this. That's perfect. Well then like a whole bunch came back. Four came back, maybe five, four for sure came back. no. So then I'm like, they're like, okay, well we'll just put these two in, we'll truck them. Perfect, we get the truck hooked up. They're going. And then I'm like, but what are you doing with that one? And he's like, What do you mean that one? I was that one that's right. There. And he was like, I thought you sent him. I was I did send him, but he he back. He's with it. So two of them did that. So then anyways, all this to say was it didn't work out. We're not we're not doing that anymore. Next year, because trucking was so much faster, it took two people. One person well we sent two people, we sent two guys. Yeah. One guy to open all the gates, send them out, whatever. It was so fast to load them. Yeah. And truck them. And there was no fighting. Yeah. Because they could they couldn't. So we just sent in the group of four that came back on us, the two that were together, and then the other one. Like, do you know what I Like it was so much easier. Yeah. And I was like, it was one of those things because I I have we've mentioned this previous. And it just like never went anywhere. And then dad was like, Well, I don't know where this bull is, and I don't and I was like, they're back here. They're back here, so we're tracking them. and so it was one of those things where it was like, this had to happen, yeah, so that now we can just truck them. And dad was like, that was so easy. And I was like, Yeah, let's I agree. This is gonna save us so much time. But out of 171 calves that we sent to pasture this year, every single one came back this fall alive. We have not had that happen since since we started tracking. Yeah. So no predators. Nice. But then we get home from holidays. This is so sad. We lost two to like a bloat issue. Mm. We have no idea what happened. We caught the so the one died while we were just on grass? Yes. But then like a few days after we left, Dad was feeding the but one had bloated, I think, prior I don't know. I can't remember. Sometimes if you move to a new pasture and it's rich, you know, it wasn't the that's the thing, it wasn't put in a a mineral tub or like a And put oil in it so they don't bloat. Anyways, I don't know, but dad started feeding bales. One bloated when we were gone. That's what happened to us last year. Yeah, and then the other one bloated when we got home. We noticed it when we got home. We treated her, she lived for three or four days, was doing good, coming around, and then we brought her back in because she started to get the eeyore ears like she was looking a little sad, but her bloat had gone down. And then we treated her again and she croaked. Yeah. So we're not really sure and it hasn't happened since. Nobody else is showing signs of sickliness or and nothing has changed feed wise either. So what happened? I don't know. But we went from one seventy one to one sixty nine, but we tried. That's okay. The win was that they all made it out of fall pasture Yeah. Yeah. From when we sent out in the spring to fall. Yeah. All back home. No foot rot. No foot rot. Well, no, we still had foot rot, but nowhere near as not as bad as it is. Not as bad. We had to chase one in for bad foot rot. And then the one that we call emerge, the one that broke Keith's Or whatever, got his stuck in his arm, was foot rotted But Okay. overall it was pretty. Yeah. Yeah. Also I'm not we had such a good we we had a really good team, so it's like really efficient. My mom came out and helped us, which was great. I am not used to having this is only the second year where we've had enough people helping. Yeah. ample amount of help. So she was like holding the shots for me while as I was like switching them out because I give two and then Taiyler was giving one. And I kept like taking them from her because I'm so used to like having to hold them a certain way while giving it that I didn't put them down, da da da. She's like, I can just hold it. And I I don't know. I I appreciate you're doing great. I just don't know what to do. What do I do with my hands? Yeah, like I don't know what to do. So anyways, I spent like the whole time like fighting with her with the shots. Yeah. And she was like, great. I was like, no, I know. I just my instinct is to grab that. Yeah. I don't know why. And my one girlfriend, she note keeps. She is the only one that I trust to like take all my notes. Ten out of ten. Nice. I love when somebody takes notes. Yeah. I do, and I know that sounds like such a nitpicky thing, but I'm like, no, no. For my sake, I need to know every last detail of it. So when I'm telling you to write it down, I need you to write down everything I say. And she was just like, She wrote down everything. And I'm I love you for that. Thank you so much. That's what we need. So good. And we did frozen pizza. Nice. For lunch. No, we did it for dinner actually. Yeah. Ten out of ten. Like you pre made pizza. Yep. So I made for that day I made veggie trays, pizza, muffins, rice crispies, cookies. Then I picked up chips. Picked up pop and water. Helen brought down for lunch she did sandwiches. Are there kids that help? Yeah. Some of the kids I'm not gonna say that anyway. But yeah, yeah. Anyways, we do have some kids that which is fun because lots of our Friends' kids are getting old enough to actually Help help. Yeah. And then some are young and they're just running around living their best life. I'm sure our one nephew literally just the whole time snack. He was at the snack table all day long. Yeah. And then there was two Every branding has those. Yeah. And there was the two girls. They literally played. We've got those blue like water tubs? Yeah. I'm talking about? We keep them. We keep going to throw them out. they entertain the kids. when we're down in the barnyard for literally hours. They're rolling on them, they're making forts out of them. They're like I'm like, no, we we have to keep them. They're eyesore. They're clutter. I hate them. But don't be can't you use it for catching water? Yeah, we just don't need enough like we have too many. So we should get rid of these. But because they entertain the kids, they're so much fun. Yeah. It's the best time. Yeah. It was great. It was so wonderful. That's fun. I love it. It was good. Yeah. You sold recently, yes? Yeah, we shipped. We just shipped seven of the biggest steers. Nice. How was that? It was good. It was fine. We got them in. we realized that when we cut, because of my daughter being in Vancouver, we didn't brand and all that kind of stuff when we should have or when we were going to. Yeah. So David and his buddy just cut the bowls. So we didn't sell yeah, and then we realized Brianna's cat is playing with a dead mouse. Brianna's cat has got a mouse. Brought it in. We are at the stage where the mice are so plentiful right now, like outside where you don't even have to feed them food? I don't. He look how fat his fat roll when he sits on his haunches, hangs over. Yeah. Okay, anyways, back to your shipping story. Sorry, Walter just had to make his appearance gross. Yeah, so we got them into s we don't we don't have an alley and whole shipping thing. We have a curr like a bigger correl and then we have a round pen. So we ship out of like we load out of the round pen. Yeah. That to me sounds so chaotic. It works. No, I no, I know. And you know what? The vet the vet clinic came in Preg checked two years ago or three years ago. In the round pen. Yeah, they like we run them out of the round pen. We have a little bit there's a little bit of an alley, but not too much up to the sh headgate. Yeah. Our headgates on hydraulic. Mm-hmm. This is right by your house. Yeah. Yeah. Right behind that old log house. that like barn. Yeah, yeah, okay. And the vet said, You guys know how to work cows. We've been to a lot of places that have a way better setup that's still and we are waiting. Yeah. And like You got it. Yeah. She was like, Thank you. Because I was like, I'm so sorry, like this isn't great. We're starting out like we don't have a correl system. She's like, You guys have been more efficient today in the way you in in your system. Yeah. Yeah. Than what I've seen in a lot of Places. I believe I how to work cows. Yeah. Yeah. So that being said, we get them in the round corral. We have them all sh sorted off. Because how many total? We just ship seven calves. Seven of the biggest. We decided because our calving season was kind of spread out, we just ship the biggest ones and then in the new year we'll ship again. Or like whenever they're bigger. Yeah, we only have like probably two liners. Yeah. Because we lost so many this spring. There's not a lot of calves. Yeah. so we get them in the round corral and realize we did not RFID them when David cut. no. So we ran them. We don't have the tractor at home. It's Mark's combining. Yeah. And whatever, right? Our chute is hydraulic. We can't get them in the squeeze. Yeah. So we just he backed up. and the corral is muddy. So where we'd normally back up to is muddy. Is muddy. We can't get in. So he backed up like onto the lawn straight back. So they have to make a ninety to get into the trailer, straight out of the chute. Or like but before they hit the end of the chute, the trailer's backed up and then there's the headgate. Right. So they can either go ninety and hit in the trailer or they will just hit the front of the headgate. Yeah. Which is closed. So each one we ran up straight in. Yeah. And then put a bar behind them, locked them. Right. And ear tagged them in the chute. Let them let them back out. Ran the next one in. Yeah. Blocked it. Which worked pretty good. That's impressive. That's pretty good. And then we tried to get them to because there's a little square at the end of our headgate that has two doors. That are probably maybe a foot and a half, two feet, two and a half feet wide. So it's like two and a half, maybe three feet. So we tried to like lock them in there so it would make a little box and so they could back out of the headgate and go into the trailer. But the square was too small. We had to back all the way back down. Yeah. And our alley is like made out of two freestanding panels along our board. Fence. So it's like it's wide. A cow can turn around quite easily. Like there's no Yeah, it's not ideal. Yeah, like it's not like you run up, shove down. Yeah. but so we got that all done. And then we just blocked the headgate off and because they'd already been in the headgate I sort of dumped that, sorry. They just kinda went in the trailer. Obviously you can't push, you have to just wait. Let them figure it out. Block when they come back at you. Yeah. But it took probably, I don't know, probably not even five minutes to get them to do that ninety. Yeah. And into the trailer. So why a hydraulic squeeze? Because when we were working at Siphon, yeah, they had an old one. We had no headgate. Yeah. And when we when they switched owners, The old guys were like, You guys can just have that one. that's convenient. Because we David was like, We don't have a headgate. We hadn't really so like yeah, we were talking about buying one and she's like, We never use that one. It's old. We bought brand new. And the you can have that one. That's why we have a hydraulic. Okay. Because it was free so annoying that you need a tractor every time though. But it's really nice when you go to Prag check or something, it's a whole lot easier to just like Run the hydraulic. Then try and muscle the gate closed. Yeah, I guess. I guess my husband's always we have a self. I like working at the feedlot and stuff. Yeah, Ars. I run headgates and I way prefer hydraulic. As annoying as it is. You prefer it. I would take a hydraulic over a lever Yeah. Man, lever Yeah. I don't know. ours you call it They go in and it just catches yeah. It catches the head, but then I think Jorim has to Yeah. And the body part. I see. Yeah. The head just catches when they go in. Yeah, ours just. Yeah, 'cause it pulls it'll be like hinge. So it'll swing in. So they'll hit the head gate and it'll pinch this way. Yeah. And then after that, then you do that. Yeah, to let out. It also works But yours is just hydraulic. Yeah. So you just close it. Yeah. I think I'd have to try it to to fully We need a video. Yeah, we need and also like running like multi like a lot of I'm sure. So are you preg checking this year? I don't know for sure. We might. Yes we are. Who we preg check with is up for debate, I think. Right currently. Yeah. I would like to switch. Switch. But is there somebody else in town that does it? No. No. You'd have to go to Dawson. I'm totally keen to go to Dawson, but we'll see. Keith I think could go either way. Yeah. But we'll see. Give a redemption round. I'm I'm done with redemption. But I also just don't know how you say like, Yeah, you can preg check, but like this vet can't come out. Yeah. Do you I think you can just say it. Like I'm well aware that you can say it, but I more so mean like If you have to tiptoe around that, why are you giving them your business? Yeah. I could go into a rant. We'll table this because I I don't know where to go with it. I don't think it's polite to our cow. If we're gonna talk about a rant, I have one. So we shipped. Okay. no. We cut our cow our bulls. Yeah, and you cut. We cut. We don't band. So they end up with a sack. Dawson every single year marks them as bulls. And I'll call so this year I called, I wrote on the manafest when David dropped them off, he call he told them they are not bulls. One still went through as a bull. And I'm like, seriously. They don't double check though. They just look. So for for our viewers, why is that annoy? Explain why. Because you get docked Yeah, there you go. So your price goes down. So y your top dollars for a steer. And you can like there's feedlots hate belly nuts. Yeah. It they're annoying. Explain. A belly nut is when you only take one drops. Yes. No. No or when you miss one. And there are people out there that ban and they push one up and take one. So they look like steers but they grow like bigger. What? Yes. So if you work at a feedlot, you have to cut belly nuts all the time. And it's the most annoying and the chances of them like bleeding out are higher or way higher. Whereas if you cut, there's no belly nuts. Yeah. You can't get a belly nut. Okay, so wait a hold on Take them out. So finish your rant Then I'm Feedlotters, when we worked at the feedlot, if there was somebody that cut versus somebody that brand, we like that lot that came through because you didn't have to check for belly nuts. Interesting. Okay, so th so okay, here's my topic on this. So Okay, first off, it's because you got docked. That's why you're upset because not only did you call it it happens. I wrote and every single year we get docked and they can't seem to figure out that we cut and cut e when you cut, obviously there's still a sack. Yeah. And the sack is a little bit bigger if you cut later, which we do. We don't cut when they're three days old. We wait till they're at least two months. Yeah, that's what we do. Okay, so here's the thing. So we banned. However, if we can only find 'cause there was two or three this year that had weird nuts. one was like not. So then you only banned one? No, nope. we leave it. I know it we cut in the fall. We cut them out. Yes. But we had two this year that we could not find to band. Like only one had dropped and one was like kinda twisted, I think if I remember correctly. So we cut those. But two of them st we called them one nut wonders. There was no nut anywhere. Like not only we didn't ban them, we chose not to ban them because we couldn't find But even in fall there was no there's still none. So we're not sure what happened. But they don't look they didn't grow like bull. Like you know how you can tell? Like some for example, like when we keep our own bulls back, you can tell. yeah. Yeah. But like no, they just like didn't but we left it just in c like if there's only one, we can only find one. We leave it. Yeah, yeah. But yeah, we had two this year like that. And then we had one that I know for a fact we banded. We didn't like whatever. He came back with both nuts, so his band broke. Yeah. Yeah. So I have heard of that. We always check we always check when we run him back through it. Yeah. Yeah. You double check. Always check. Every time. Yeah. Whereas a lot of people don't do that. They don't double check. But I also feel like it's like quite obvious when they still have their nuts. Yeah. But also why not double check? Because at the end of the day, you're gonna get docked. Yeah. If they if they think it's a bowl or if they think it's staggy. But a lot of people want to get Yeah. Want to They want they'll grow bigger. Yeah. If you belly nut them. But but you also can get docked for them being staggy. Yeah, but you don't generally if you band because the auction will put them through as steers. Because there's no sack, you've banded them. Interesting. Yeah. Whereas they technically they have to go off the manifest, especially when they sign off on the manifest. So if you haven't signed off on the manifest, they could come to you and say, Hey, we can't sign off. It looks like you have a bull. Yeah. And you have them as steers. But they signed off on the manifest as we all have steers. I don't know. David's looking Because he's tired of this happening over and over again. And this year it was just one bull. Yeah. But Every year they still have to. And my sister sold my sister-in-law sold opens cows. She had pre-written the manifest seven cows. My father-in-law she pre-wrote signed off or something because it was her cows. And then my father-in-law loaded them because she was at work. I don't know exactly. What happened. Anyways, he took him in. One cow jumped the fence. So he only took six to Dawson. They signed off on the manifest as seven. And he didn't realize because he took a load. So she got him going in the morning, but he took like two or three loads to Dawson. Okay. So one cow jumped the fence when he was gone. When he was gone. So he didn't he took the manifest. He didn't realize. So when he loaded the app, he was just like there was six cows. She had sorted into like this load first, this load second, this load third. Right. Right? Or whatever. So and then this is the manifest for this, this is the manifest for that, manifest for that. She had it all organized for him, right? He shows up to Dawson, six cows jump off, and the manifest says seven, and they didn't catch it. So after the sale, they called her and said, We lost a cow. And the only reason that she knew that it had jumped was because she'd went out and checked like calves and cows that night and was like, that cow was supposed to get on the liner and it didn't. So she knew, but they signed off on the manifest when only six cows got off. Yeah. They should have had to pay for that. You can't sign off on a manifest. Yeah, isn't it all they needed to go to Mark and say, Hey, you're missing a cow. You're missing a cow. There's seven cows on your manifest. Six cows got off. And this isn't like a brand inspector who signed off on it. I don't know. Potentially. No, the thing is we always get ours brand inspected because we we sell in Alberta. So do we. But there's brand inspector at there's a brand inspector. There's a brand inspector at the auction when they come in. Well the brand inspector and the auction house has to catch it. And nobody did. Yeah. And Mark just handed them the manifest because it was written up. He didn't. Because our brand inspector that comes to us, they're very like on it. Yeah. Yeah, my guy's coming all the time. yeah. He's a Well obviously whatever goes on there. They're so unorganized and can't figure it out. Cause they should have caught That only six cows got off that liner. yeah, they should have. And it's not even a liner. You're not running off 129 and you miscount 128. It's just like a horse trailer, wasn't it? Yes. That's crazy. Yeah, it's not even 150 are coming off a liner. Exactly. And you have to like, I might have like there's six. You can look in the corral and see there's six. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, but back to like the bull thing. I think. You should look into that. You should able to fight them on it because what I would 'cause okay, my question is on that. What's the point of having a manifest and going through all the effort of your manifest, your brand inspector if they can just change it and do whatever they want, willy-nilly. Yeah, I think you have to hold somebody Yeah, I would say if you sign off on this, then that's what That's what it is. And you need to make up the difference for what it would be. So yeah, if you would have sold it as a steer, this is on you. Yeah. You cannot sell my animals. Yeah. 'Cause that's the other thing because you can't sign off on it and then change it. Yeah. You know, you because I would fight them. Like when we saw, we saw the same place. Yeah. Like we've had times where we're like, yeah, there's a steer, but there's one that looks like steady because he's still he's got no nuts, but he's got a sack. Yeah. Yeah. He will dock it. Yeah, he docks. But it's still technically a steer. He's never like, that's a big But he says Yeah, but like And you know. Yeah. And Jorim always goes and talks to him while he's like looking at the animals. Yeah. Too. Like the that's what I love about it is like he'll actually talk to Jorim and they can have a conversation about like, well, this is this. okay. Yeah. Whatever. Whereas like Dawson is if you're going to big market that if you're going to change something, you have to call and get the owner to s like you have to tell him. Yeah. Yeah. And especially when you're hauling in, I get if you're hauling in a liner and as they run off the truck and then you look through them, then you need to call. But when you're only hauling in seven, yeah, once again, it's not rocket science. There's not a pen full of 150 animals and whoops, we missed one. Yeah. Yeah, that is interesting. The brand inspector should have caught it. Like first off. Yeah. And then like Wait. Why is this one You're missing a number? Yeah. No, but even with the changing it as a bull. Yeah. If they're like, hey, is this a bull? And we'd have no, they could have said, okay, well, it looks like a bull. We're gonna have to dock it this much or whatever. But they need to tell you. Yeah. They can't just send it through as a bull. Yeah. I can s also if you're buying a bull and it's a steer, that's also gonna Yeah, what happens if somebody actually bought it? Not that they should, because no. No, but what if you bought it as a bull? It's not a bull. Something may breed. So if it's sold as a bull, you should look back on that auction and see if it was actually sold as a bull. They just build it to you as a bull. I'm pretty sure it would. No, but I'd be curious. You've sold them as steers. they're steers. It's going to auction as a b they've said it's a bull. Yeah. Or billed or or did it actually sell as a bull. In previous years when it comes through on the manif like on my end and it sells at the auction, they also say it's a bull. That's crazy. So it when it goes through. So p I know people who've just bought a sale market bull. 'Cause sometimes that's how you start out. Well, if they bought mine as a bull it sure's heck ain't a bull But that's what I'm saying though. That's actually concerning. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. That they have it advertised as a bull because it's bull and there's nothing on it. Yeah. Yeah, you gotta be calling the auction house. That's crazy. That could that's crazy. We need an update 'cause that could actually be a whole nother episode on how auction houses handle different things and why you sell to sellers or why you sell to an auction. Yeah. Anyways. Okay, we should do a quick recipe and then we should get out of here because we're On a bad crunch. Totally. Do you have a recipe from your crazy harvests? I'm trying to think. Okay, I'll tell you mine. Okay. Okay. This is actually from our book club. this is from the Briar House. The Briar Club? The Briar Club book. And in it there's like these all these different recipes on it. I did the Rikas So when we got together to talk about book club, everybody brought a recipe. I did the Rika recipe and it's like cabbage, bacon, onions, egg noodles, super fast. So easy. and garlic. It reminds me of a is it Cabanera noodle? Like when it's just like a noodles and a white like cheese and bacon. Yeah, kinda. Yeah. It was cabinet. It's so good. And it's literally like 10 minutes to cook. I did that, been living on that, plus just adding like ground beef or ground pork to it. I like a little more protein than just bacon. Yeah. Literally the quickest meal ever. Ten of it's so good. Yeah. Anyways, that's all I got. It was good. Highly recommend. I'll we'll post the recipe. It was really good. I liked it. That whole that whole thing was good. All of it was good. Super good. Just look up the Briar Club recipes. Yep. There's a bunch of random recipes. And it's really good. The fried chicken was good. That was good. Like. The potato pancakes were good or whatever. The total. Yeah. Okay, anyways, continue, go yours. Okay, give me a second. I need to really think about this. Let me grab my phone. I have like a spreadsheet. You have a spreadsheet? Of course you have a spreadsheet. For anybody who missed it, she's got a spreadsheet on her phone of what meals she cooked. I have a spreadsheet that has Do you guys have to put in who's cooking what so you guys don't double up on meals? Yeah, dude. That's how she's The one day I texted the guy. See, I feel like I'd be like, you know what? If you have to eat the same thing twice. Yeah, if you're eating spaghetti twice this year. I'm at least putting a different twist on it. I put more oregano in mine. I sent a text. I b okay, last year I think I was on Wednesdays and then Fridays. I'm on Mondays this year, and I love it, and I'm never giving it back. I'm not giving it to anybody. You like Mondays. I like Mondays, but you were the first person to do stuff. So I texted what I was making, and then my sister-in-law was like. I was literally going to make the exact same it was the same meal and the same dessert and the same salad even I think. my gosh. She was like I was gonna make that exact same thing and I was like Gotcha. I'm first I'm Monday. You cannot. I am Monday. Okay. Shepherd's pie. You guys. yes. Every sleeping on Shepherd's Pie. Shepherd's Pie. Bring it back. I did not like it as a kid. Really? I'm not a mashed potato person. yeah, that's right. But when you don't eat your mashed potatoes out of a box Yeah. You make your own mashed potatoes and mashed potatoes are so fast to make. Plus, mashed potatoes with the meat and the veg, like and you can kind of just mush it together. If you're not a mashed potato person, you can do it all in one bite and it tastes really good. Anyway, so mashed potatoes and then you do your meat and just buy a thing of frozen veggies. And throw it in. Yeah. So easy. And this I don't know what sauce goes with shepherd's I think it's just tomato paste and tomato sauce or something. I would Shepherd's pie is a tomato. It could be a cream. It depends on who makes it. Some people it's I've done tomato base. I wouldn't do it. A lot of people do like mushroom soup or like a cream base. Yeah, let me Pinterest. I've done a Shepherd's Pie rest. My mum makes herself. I'm not a tomato person. I think it's just tomato paste though. Let me see. tomato paste and beef broth. That's it. If my mom's dress that's the one I've done that one. Yeah for some one similar. My mom's though is mushroom soup. Cream of mushroom. Cream of mushroom soup. So I don't buy cream of mushroom soup, but if I did, that's what I'm making with it for sure. Okay. Ooh. 100%. Okay. Well you can change it up. Yeah. Feel feel your spice. Figure it out. Whatever you want. Okay, what do you There's your variety. That's what you could have said. Your variety. If she'd picked if she'd also picked Shepherd's Pie, you'd be like, I'm doing a tomato based. I'm doing tomato based on So you're gonna have to do the mushroom size. so with house building I haven't cooked a whole ton, obviously. but the other day I made like a Greek salmon bowl. Ooh. Which was really good. So you just sound really good. I just cubed the with rice. Chicken. Or the salmon, I guess. And marinated it for like twenty minutes. With what? In like a Greek spiced Well, it wasn't a dressing. It was like Greek spices with balsamic vinegar and oil. Yes, pretty much it's a homemade dressing then. Yeah. And then homemade Greek marinade. Yeah, there you go. I'm snaking salmon for my mom's after this to make this. And then that's a good idea. I just did rice. and then I guess I did just like feta, tomatoes, cucumbers. Yum. On top, and then that sounds super good. That sounds so yummy. I like it. I've never thought about doing salmon Greek, but I would do it. My husband doesn't eat Greek food, but I would do that. I leave life. David doesn't like cucumbers, so I leave the cucumbers in his creek. What does he have against cucumbers? He hates cucumbers. Why? They taste like water. They're delicious. They're crunchy. Yeah. Apparently they have an aftertaste or something. I don't really know. I do understand that. If you cut the wrong end first, they have a bitter taste to them. Why? Okay, no, but if you Cut the stem end. What are you talking about? She's right. Have you never grown cucumbers? my okay, you cut where it grows off the plant, like the stem end. Okay. And if the cucumber doesn't have enough water, they're super bitter. Yeah. You can take it out by taking cutting the top of your stem end off and rubbing it on top of the other cuc like the other like the other end of the cucumber where you cut it from. If you make like little circles, they're so white, the white stuff comes out. Yeah, you have to rub it. The white stuff comes out, pulls the bitter out of your cucumber. No, we're clipping this and getting the opinions of our audience. What are you talking about? Yes! Yeah. No, I don't underst I actually don't understand what you're saying. So you cut the part that cut it You cut the end, the stem end. Yeah. And rub it where? Where you cut it off from. So you just like cut it and then you rub it together where you cut it. And that's sorry. Okay, so when you grow your own cu cucumbers And then you cut it and you go to take a bite. Sometimes they are so bitter. It's a lack of water. I'm 99% sure. If your cucumbers don't have enough water, they go bitter. Okay. So then you have to cut it in a certain spot, cut the other side, and then rub it together. how does that how does that make it less bitter? I don't understand. It pulls the bit pulls the bitter out. So it'll foam white. Cut a cucumber. Have you ever had a zucchini where it like is if they're not foaming white done that and it's foamed white before? I don't know what you guys are talking about. Okay. If you cut a cucumber and it doesn't foam white, your cucumber's not bitter. You can eat it. Yeah. But if it starts foaming white when you rub it, it will be bitter. And if bought cucumber is typically not bitter. Yes, but homemade ones are. Yeah. So the bought ones, they obviously get enough water. Yeah. Or something. Or they've genetically modified the cucumber. It gives me cucumbers, field cucumbers that you make pickles out of. Okay. And I've never had a big Do you have a cucumber? Right here? Right. No, I use them all. well, I could show you, but we can't. Okay. I don't even have a cucumber. I don't even know what you're talking about. We will educate Brianna before we come back to this podcast. The rest of you probably know what we're talking about. No, no. Okay, hold on. There is no way. The two out of three that know what it is. You need to grow your own cucumbers to understand this. Because I would have never thought about this until you grow your own cucumbers. And then you bite one. And you're like, my word. This is disgusting. Yes. I have ruined. I've ruined everything! I can't make pickles out of this. You still can. Yeah. Well now so I was supposed to do that with every cucumber that I cut to Only if they're bitter. So if somebody gets pickles to me for Christmas or I brought pickles and they're bitter, apparently I didn't know this trick, so I'm sorry. This is a crazy. You wouldn't know if it was bitter or not. Like you would know. And pickles is way more hideable. It's gotta be really bitter in a pickle. I'm just Yeah, like just regular cucumber. Whereas like an eating one, if you're eating it, you'll notice the bitter way sooner. How many raw cucumbers are you eating? I eat a lot of cucumber, but not ones I like grew myself. Crystal gave me a bunch, I was eating them in a lot of meals. But I didn't notice that they were And I find yeah, typically if they're grown in a greenhouse they don't get so bitter. But if they're just I don't know. I think it's a water thing. Yeah. Okay. The more water they have, the less bitter they are. Do a poll. Yes. Who knows? I did not know about this. I feel very personally attacked, but I feel like I'm not the only one who doesn't know about this. I guess we'll find out. Yeah. Okay. If this is how I felt with the tater tots, okay that's fair. That's fair. You know what? Yeah. T B D. T B D. We'll figure this out. Anyways. All right, guys. Have a good week. Thanks for joining.
