- 0:00That's all the replays and that's all I needed to see.
- 0:02So yeah, I knew I didn't really. I'm not going to call out
- 0:07anybody. I was just frustrated at getting
- 0:12hooked in the right rear multiple times.
- 0:13You know, it's frustrating when you take a 70 G hit last year
- 0:18and then I take A55G hit this year, you know, that's like,
- 0:20it's just frustrating. So just aggressive pushes and
- 0:26duels that I thought were a little bit over the top for the
- 0:28timing of it and and for the moment that it was that was in
- 0:32the duels. But now I haven't talked to
- 0:34anybody. Hopefully I just don't get
- 0:36hooked in the right rear again because that that's no fun sucks
- 0:40so. Parker's Fox Sports How was the
- 0:42backup car and were you planning on going out at all today?
- 0:46No, we weren't planning on it. No realness of rain or not going
- 0:51out today. I thought the backup car
- 0:52yesterday was good. I kind of learned all I needed
- 0:54to learn in the small pack that we had kind of getting pushed.
- 0:58I wanted to feel that how how can I take a push how can I push
- 1:01somebody how did it handle and a couple like funky situations off
- 1:05of four and I was, I was very happy with that.
- 1:08I couldn't tell the difference and that's what you want not
- 1:10being able to tell the difference between backup car
- 1:12and and primary. So they did a good job of
- 1:14getting that thing ready. You know you don't really, you
- 1:17know all the all our group, right.
- 1:19You don't normally get backup cards ready.
- 1:21That's just not really a thing anymore.
- 1:24I think you have that mindset right coming down here that you
- 1:26you can you might need to use a backup card but they did a good
- 1:30job of working super hard Thursday night.
- 1:33NASCAR let them in a few hours early yesterday morning, which
- 1:36was really help those guys out of getting ready before
- 1:38practice. So yeah, I think our piece is
- 1:40just as good as it was, you know, Thursday night and
- 1:43hopefully you know it, it shows come Sunday again.
- 1:46And so much of this race is fuel mileage.
- 1:49And I'm curious, does that change at all if you're racing
- 1:53on a green track? Does that make anything more
- 1:55difficult to calculate or figure out going into the race?
- 1:59No, I don't think so. I think everyone on our group
- 2:02really understands kind of your fuel mileage number and and what
- 2:05you do you know before your stop you know it's it's changed it's
- 2:08weird the you know it's a lot of of saving before your stop
- 2:13especially if you get a green flag really it helps you on the
- 2:16green flag stop just taking less gas you know burning less one
- 2:18year when you're out there running just trying to speed up
- 2:22the stop especially if you just doing fuel only.
- 2:24So I hope hopefully we and and and it feels like everybody has
- 2:28got that game down now. You know I feel like last year
- 2:31even the end of 22 I feel like our group was pretty good at at
- 2:36being early with that of of like understanding hey if we just
- 2:39save a bunch of gas and I've just had that mindset it's like
- 2:41hey I'm going to save gas and if I, you know enter and center pit
- 2:45Rd. and row you know 10 or 12 you know I'm going to make up a
- 2:48second on the stop and I'm probably going to jump these
- 2:50guys. So it's like who can save the
- 2:52most of the gas efficiently. You even see leaders saving now
- 2:55you know and it kind of slows every all the pace down and
- 2:58you'll see an outside lane top lane 3rd lane kind of come for a
- 3:01while if someone decides not to save gas for a while and get
- 3:03their track position. So it's kind of a, it's an odd
- 3:05cat and mouse game right now who wants to be, you know,
- 3:10aggressive on fuel saving. So yeah, everyone kind of has
- 3:13that mindset now, but I don't think it changes much on a green
- 3:15tracker or not. All right.
- 3:18We'll go to Chris and then Dustin.
- 3:20Go ahead, Chris. Hey Ryan, Chris Gollin over here
- 3:23with WNDB over here to your right.
- 3:27First, I I wanted to check are you, are you feeling OK after
- 3:31that crash? And because I know you're no
- 3:32strangers to hits like that here at Daytona, I mean, how long
- 3:36does that stick with you physically?
- 3:38Is it going to affect how you're feeling for Sunday?
- 3:42Sore, that's for sure. I'm probably more sore today
- 3:44than I was yesterday. I feel like the second day is
- 3:46always kind of the the more day of of soreness, neck area all
- 3:51down the back, just muscles getting strained, you know,
- 3:53that's kind of the biggest thing.
- 3:54Everything else felt fine, just kind of all your muscles and
- 3:58kind of down your shoulders and stuff that just gets pulled, you
- 4:01know, in weird areas that you're not used to.
- 4:03So that's that's the most sore today.
- 4:05So I've been trying to be ginger with it.
- 4:07Everything else I felt fine with mentally and stuff like that.
- 4:10So that was good. But yeah, I don't think I'll be
- 4:14fine to go, you know, hopefully if we were to run tomorrow, you
- 4:17know, I'd be good to go then. And you know, if I get another
- 4:20buffer day, if we run Monday, I'll be even better.
- 4:22So now I yeah, just a little sore, but that that stuff will
- 4:25pass. Is it similar to what you felt
- 4:28back in August? A little better?
- 4:29A little worse. I would say more of my body felt
- 4:34sore in August for longer and I was able to be home in August to
- 4:42try to kind of get worked on by people at home here.
- 4:46I haven't been able to kind of get worked on as much as I did
- 4:48last year. Just people not being here.
- 4:50They went home after the duels. So we have a great physical
- 4:54therapist in our in our camp that she's she's amazing and so
- 4:58she'll be able to help help me out tomorrow a little bit if I'm
- 5:00still feeling sore. So yeah, it wasn't as bad as
- 5:04last year's, still pretty brutal.
- 5:06But I was happy with how the car kind of crushed.
- 5:09I thought that was good. I haven't seen a right front in
- 5:11the firewall before, so I think everything that they've done
- 5:15NASCAR wise kind of to get these things to crush more is good.
- 5:17And there's some stuff that I've talked to them about try to get
- 5:19better and better. But yeah, yeah, I think she'll
- 5:23help me out tomorrow if if I still need it.
- 5:24Dustin Long, NBC Sports. Ryan, I'm confused about
- 5:28something, so forgive me when you talk about the pushing and
- 5:32and feel like it was too hard. I guess there's so many
- 5:35different drivers so everybody's got different opinions.
- 5:38I've been around long enough, you've been around sport line up
- 5:40where there once was a period where you didn't push at the
- 5:42trial at all so now you push everywhere.
- 5:44Heck, part of the reason the Ford success in in here in years
- 5:48past have been you guys can push in the corner.
- 5:50So when you're expressing A frustration, I don't, I'm kind
- 5:54of confused because to me the game has changed so much.
- 5:58I almost think are you not adjusting or?
- 6:01And maybe that's not a fair way to say it because I'm not the
- 6:03one who's taking a 55 and A70G hit, but I'm just confused why
- 6:07you feel that way with how the how the game has changed.
- 6:09Yeah, I mean pushing is a huge part of the speedways now,
- 6:12right? And you see it more than ever.
- 6:14You see more pushing now then you know I I look back at the
- 6:17the only time you push more was the tandem racing right.
- 6:21And that but that was like solid connection being on somebody and
- 6:24and now the bumpers kind of being around you see hours kind
- 6:27of get out of control more. But I think right you have to
- 6:30push hard and I fully understand that and like I push people hard
- 6:33but I I try to take care of people.
- 6:35Like as the pusher you are responsible for the guy in front
- 6:38of you. You have just as much of A
- 6:39responsibility to make sure that you don't shove the guy in front
- 6:44of you through somebody and you have to understand where you
- 6:47have to let him go. You have to let if you are the
- 6:49third car in line you have to let the 2nd place car in line
- 6:52go. You can't just shove them
- 6:53through the guy leading the the top lane because then it gets
- 6:57bumper cars and then that's when people get turned.
- 7:00And it seemed like the other night kind of where the six
- 7:02shove the 8:00 into the 24. Like he didn't really let him go
- 7:05early enough to where he was just coming too fast.
- 7:07And then you hit him in a trial vote to where there's kind of
- 7:10lateral load and that's just going to turn that guy.
- 7:12So you know pushing is a huge game and I'm fine with.
- 7:16I mean you can push the hell out of me.
- 7:17You just got to be smart where you do it and kind of how you
- 7:19get on somebody and and you have to be knowledgeable of like what
- 7:25spots are good to do it and what spots are bad to do it.
- 7:28And so it, you know, I'm not upset with hard pushes because
- 7:32that's what it takes to go forward in this game.
- 7:33You just have to be smart about where you do it and the timing
- 7:36of it and letting someone go like something me and my
- 7:39spotters talk about a lot. If I'm the third car in line,
- 7:43he's letting me know all the gaps to the car that is in front
- 7:47of the car in front of me. Like, all right you have one car
- 7:50length, half car length, the OK, he's there and you have to just
- 7:52let let him go. Like you have to get off that
- 7:54guy's bumper so you just don't shove them through the the lead
- 7:58car. So yeah, it's just, it's just
- 8:00where you push. You have to be smart of that,
- 8:02you know, push hard, push super hard.
- 8:04That's fine. But it's like last year in
- 8:06August, you know the 20s shoving the 54th through the corner and
- 8:09kind of moving on his bumper like that's he just can't do
- 8:12that, you know. And and then the trial thing,
- 8:14like he just shoved the 8:00 so hard into the 24, just 24 had no
- 8:18chance. Like you have a zero shot of
- 8:20saving your car if you're running 10 miles an hour faster
- 8:23than the leader and you run through his bumper.
- 8:24Like you just can't save that. So it's just smart about where
- 8:27you do it and and how hard you get on somebody and when he when
- 8:30you know you have to let that person go and just you want to
- 8:33develop runs and you're trying to go forward.
- 8:34But sometimes timing gets off and you have to be like, OK,
- 8:38well that didn't time out good, let's re rack and let's try it
- 8:40again the next lap. And so maybe we can time this
- 8:42out better. Like if you get on somebody
- 8:44before you get in the triable, you can push them all through
- 8:46the triable. But if you kind of hit them
- 8:48right at the start, finish line like that, it just gets them all
- 8:51out of shape. Yeah.
- 8:53Thank you for explaining that you you noted the 70 G hit in
- 8:56August, the 55 G hit the other night.
- 9:00Are those the the two hardest hits you've had that you're
- 9:03aware of? Or I don't know if the Nashville
- 9:05one would have been harder if there's something else that's
- 9:06been harder? In your career, yeah, I feel
- 9:09like the Nashville hit was by far the hardest hit I've ever
- 9:11taken. I did not have a mouthpiece in
- 9:14for that. I had one in for the other two.
- 9:17The mouthpiece data has been really good for us to see 'cause
- 9:21you have the, the black box data from the car, but that's just
- 9:26showing the car G load and impact, right?
- 9:29The important one is the what is the driver feel and take not the
- 9:33most, but it's a huge part of the equation, right?
- 9:36And that and that's how you kind of separate, OK.
- 9:37The car took this impact. The driver takes this impact.
- 9:41So I didn't have a mouthpiece in Nashville.
- 9:43I've been wearing it every week since then just to make sure
- 9:46because you never know when it can happen.
- 9:47And it's good to have that date of Wake Forest has done a good
- 9:49job of of really working hard at that and those folks are great.
- 9:53So I don't know what Nashville would have been.
- 9:56It was felt way worse and I was, and I look at the mental side of
- 10:01it mentally, I was way more messed up after Nashville than I
- 10:05was, you know, these two hits at this racetrack.
- 10:08But yeah, Nashville was by far the hardest one.
- 10:10But the best data I have to go off of is these two.
- 10:14And last thing is do you change anything off of getting that
- 10:17information from the from the mouthpiece and and the hit do
- 10:21anything before before Sunday or Monday.
- 10:24No, I mean internally like in the car, I feel like we've done
- 10:27the best job that we possibly can on making sure I'm as safe
- 10:29as I can. Like I had zero problem with how
- 10:34I reacted in the car, like how my body was.
- 10:37We do a good job of always trying to find ways to be better
- 10:40and protect us and Penske's done a good job of always making that
- 10:43a number one priority, the driver safety side.
- 10:47So everything you know from this hit last year here to this one
- 10:50the other night we tweaked some stuff after Nashville of stuff
- 10:54that I was like hey I think we can do this a little better like
- 10:56belts and Han strap length and I run pretty short Han straps just
- 11:01because I don't want my head to move forward a lot And but no I
- 11:04think everything worked the way it should the best that it can
- 11:08you know and you're you're only going to do so much, right.
- 11:10I mean, there's only so much you can do, but that's that's all
- 11:12you can do is make sure everything is as is, the best it
- 11:15can be. All right.
- 11:16We're going to go Kelly, then Mark in the back.
- 11:18Go ahead, Kelly. Kelly cranderaser.com So Ryan,
- 11:21that those numbers came from that math mouthpiece data that
- 11:24that's been it seems like a really good thing to have.
- 11:27You're getting those exact numbers.
- 11:30Do you feel like these wrecks that specifically last year and
- 11:33now the one that you just had the other night, do you feel
- 11:35like they're starting to take a toll or you you still feel
- 11:38pretty comfortable that yeah you're you're worn out but you
- 11:40have the resources and you mentioned folks that work with
- 11:44Team Penske. So do you feel like you're
- 11:46bouncing back OK or do you feel like they're starting to take a
- 11:48toll maybe because they're they're it's been a lot over the
- 11:51last half a year. It's more than I'd like to take,
- 11:53but that's part of our sport. I mean, do you understand that's
- 11:57you're going to have you do this and, you know, do it for a
- 12:00reason and you understand the risks of it and it's just what
- 12:02we do. It's it's understandable, like I
- 12:04don't ever think about the bad side of this.
- 12:06You never, if a driver, if you're ever like worried of when
- 12:10you're strapping in the car of like who?
- 12:12I don't hope I don't take a big hit again.
- 12:13Like, yes, that's just not a mentality of anybody.
- 12:15So all you try to do is find to find out how to win the race and
- 12:19you, you understand when you sign up.
- 12:21I understood when I signed up for this thing, watching dad
- 12:23race that there's dangers of it and things are going to happen.
- 12:26I mean, I don't really see that it's taking a toll on me
- 12:29personally. Yeah, it's think sitting around
- 12:32and being sore and then having a hard time moving around the next
- 12:34morning, but just get over it and take Advil and figure it
- 12:38out. So, I mean it's it's all you can
- 12:42do, but that's why we love it and that's why we do it.
- 12:44And yeah, you don't ever think of the, the the negative side of
- 12:47it. You just try to figure out when
- 12:48those things do happen. Hey, did we do all we can to
- 12:51make sure I was as safe as possible?
- 12:53And if the answer is yes, awesome.
- 12:55We we checked that box, we did a great job.
- 12:58And if not, then you try to work on things to to get it better
- 13:01and that's that's all you can do.
- 13:02There's only so much you can do. What is the Saturday now like
- 13:05the the rest of Saturday before the Daytona 500?
- 13:08Going into Sunday, hoping and and assuming.
- 13:11If you try to keep your schedule on track of we're going to race
- 13:14on Sunday, what will the rest of today be like?
- 13:16What is what is this time now like leading into Daytona and
- 13:20how do you spend it? How where do you, where do you
- 13:22put your mindset? Do you try not to think about it
- 13:24or do you think about every little thing and and what this
- 13:26race is? Yeah, I mean that's really my my
- 13:32like schedule doesn't really change.
- 13:34I mean your schedule is pretty set as far as things you have to
- 13:36do off the track you know, a week, week ahead.
- 13:40So yeah, I don't really think about it.
- 13:42I mean oh, Gianna and I go to dinner tonight and just rest up
- 13:47and get ready for for tomorrow and and all the stuff you have
- 13:49to do pre race and and figure out, you know we've already
- 13:52pretty much made our, I mean our cars locked in, right.
- 13:55They're they're doing final tech right now and our changes are
- 13:58locked in. Jonathan and I figured out what
- 14:01we were going to do after practice yesterday.
- 14:03Hey this is how we're going to have the car and then it just
- 14:05sits. You know it just waits.
- 14:06So and then I mean we'll and we already understand like the
- 14:09strategy of the race. Like we talked about that weeks
- 14:11in advance and and kind of have an idea of what we're going to
- 14:13do. Some things might change kind of
- 14:15on the fly like when you pit who you pit with, you know, just
- 14:17depending on situation stuff. But yeah everyone knows.
- 14:21I mean I I don't I don't wake up anymore race day morning of the
- 14:24500 and then and like overwhelmed anymore.
- 14:26You understand it's a big race and you know what it means.
- 14:29So you mentally prepare yourself for it for the whole offseason,
- 14:33the whole winter and know how big it is, and then you just
- 14:36wait to get going. That the the worst part is the
- 14:39sitting around side of it, right?
- 14:41Sitting around to do this, this huge race and this big event,
- 14:44you know, you just want to get going.
- 14:45You want to do what you you're most comfortable with and what
- 14:48people are most comfortable with is driving and racing.
- 14:50And that's all I look forward to is just getting it going and and
- 14:53then seeing how it all plays out and develops.
- 14:55So the waiting around twiddling your thumbs.
- 14:57It stinks, but it's part of our sport.
- 15:00Sometimes you get pretty good at it, so.
- 15:03All right. We'll take our final question
- 15:05for Mark in the back. Mark Arrow PRN Ryan, I'm glad to
- 15:08see you make it to another another one of those sort of
- 15:12along the lines of of Kelly's you've talked about the physical
- 15:15part of it but accumulative frustration.
- 15:19I mean does that sort of carry and each one build on, you know,
- 15:25your you were frustrated by wreck one, a little more
- 15:28frustrated by two, little more frustrated by three.
- 15:31Does that kind of keep building? No, I I, I try to forget things
- 15:36pretty quickly and get over them, you know, I mean, I yeah,
- 15:39I was frustrated Thursday night, but like Friday morning I woke
- 15:42up and I was over the frustration part of it.
- 15:45You know just you get over these things pretty quick and you
- 15:50know, so yeah just it's just when those things happen you get
- 15:52frustrated about it like gosh I can't believe I just got right
- 15:55reared for the third time at this place in a row.
- 15:58You know that's the frustrating part about it and it just is
- 16:00like when is this going to end. It's like the tale of two, two
- 16:03race tracks for me. Talladega for some reason we
- 16:05have really good fortune and and don't really get caught up in
- 16:09many incidences and always of of a run up towards the front and
- 16:11then here at this place the last few times I've been here I just
- 16:14can't do no right and just feel like I just get caught up in a
- 16:18product to someone else's mess and that's just that's just part
- 16:21of it. I've I put in my head a while
- 16:23ago going to the speedways of hey, things can happen.
- 16:26It's out of my control. So I'm not going to really let
- 16:28it get to me too much. Yeah, I'll be frustrated with it
- 16:30for a few hours, but I wake up the next day, I'm over it and I
- 16:33just try to figure out the next deal.
- 16:35And that was figuring out how to get our backup car to where it
- 16:38needs to be and and and strategizing for the race.
- 16:41So it's just frustrating when those things happen.
- 16:43But I I try I get over things very, very quickly.
- 16:47So thank you all. All right.
- 16:49Ryan, thank you so much for spending time with us.
- 16:51We wish you the best of luck tomorrow on the Daytona 500.
