- 0:00Self managing organizations. How do you build them?
- 0:05How do you find teams to be to be the one who's living inside
- 0:09of this type of an organization? How effective are self managing
- 0:13organizations and how do you find someone that is naturally
- 0:18self-managing for those that listen to this podcast, you know
- 0:23that I was I was really going to kick there with self managing
- 0:26organizations and I kind of still am There was a
- 0:30self-managing organization that was the very first client of
- 0:32Beyond brand. Self managing organizations like
- 0:38one of my favorite podcasts. The ready is is produced by a
- 0:41self-management organization. There's a lot of good and bad
- 0:46with those types of companies and those type of types of
- 0:49teams. But I was listening to a podcast
- 0:53today by Jason free who runs a self-managing organization or S
- 0:57not necessarily true. He has self-managing principles
- 1:01inside the organization. Let me correct myself.
- 1:06That's a listening to the podcast today.
- 1:09I started thinking I started honestly thinking about what it
- 1:15means to to have a self management team.
- 1:20How to create one, the impact it can have within side of an
- 1:25organization, how how you may be productive and the type of
- 1:28leader. It takes start to run us of
- 1:30managing team. There's a lot there may not be
- 1:33able to get to it all but I'll start, I'll start unpacking some
- 1:36thoughts. So be a leader of a self
- 1:41management. Team takes patience.
- 1:45It takes creativity. It takes perseverance.
- 1:52It takes that it takes the natural desire.
- 1:57To let people be who they are. Like, I was going to give you a
- 2:00really fancy fancy way of like it's a natural desire to dive
- 2:04into. Someone's, contextual no, we're
- 2:06not even doing all that today. Very simple.
- 2:09It takes a natural desire to want someone to, to allow
- 2:14someone to support, someone being who they are.
- 2:18And I'll, and I'll raise my hand and say, I'm a great leader.
- 2:20And that's very difficult for me at times.
- 2:23The best leaders inside of the best self-managing teams and let
- 2:27me Define. Some energy team, a self
- 2:29managing team gets shit done. Pardon my French.
- 2:34But it's objective. A sub managing team is led by.
- 2:38Let's say Or is ran ran by with 6 to 18 members.
- 2:46And they get everything done, deliverable wise team alignment.
- 2:52Wise, communication-wise tweaks, wise, anything operation
- 2:55anything that has to do with the day-to-day interactions of a
- 2:59team and a company, they get things done in a way that is
- 3:02productive without anyone telling the other person how to
- 3:05do something, when to do something and what fashion to do
- 3:08something in which structure to do something.
- 3:10There's no, there's no intentional guidance there.
- 3:13It's it's, it's a, it's a beautiful.
- 3:15Think of human beings that are that are all ProActive at
- 3:19getting to know how someone else works.
- 3:23And and and following a certain set of a certain set of
- 3:26principles and guiding and guiding points. and so, The type
- 3:36of leader you need is someone that really really allows people
- 3:39to do that naturally. Like being a sub managing
- 3:43leader, is someone that you, you have total empathy for how they
- 3:47want to live life, how they went to work, how they went to
- 3:50execute things, how they, how they want to be.
- 3:55It's in the literal DNA of your bones to do that.
- 4:01To be a supplement engine leader.
- 4:03You have to be someone that listens.
- 4:04Well that has very minimal ego and if you do have ego it's that
- 4:11you have ego around being the most empathetic person in the
- 4:14world. If you're going to have ego,
- 4:15have if you're going to be the Kanye West of something and I
- 4:19know that's a very crazy statement right now.
- 4:21So let me take that back and he's in a hole spot but out you
- 4:25knew that you knew where I was going with it.
- 4:27If you're going to be egotistical about something be
- 4:29egotistical about being the most, Most empathetic person in
- 4:32the world. The most empathetic leader in
- 4:35the world. Had ego around that.
- 4:42If you're going to have ego by something, have you going around
- 4:45that? We're going to have ego about
- 4:48something, half eagle that you were one of the nicest people in
- 4:50the world. And you when you work with your,
- 4:54with your employees, you would do anything in the world to
- 4:56understand how they want to work and let them be.
- 5:03That's what I think. I Yeah.
- 5:07So a sub needs a leader has to be that way.
- 5:12Now, a self-managed and leader has to design a team in a very
- 5:16interesting way as well. I self-managing leader.
- 5:20The way they design teams has to be around around high levels of
- 5:28communication early on. I tried to build a supplement as
- 5:32you organization. Start a BX, my very first
- 5:35company with a flat organization, there was no
- 5:39rankings, no hierarchy. No.
- 5:42I mean, I think if we had to put one in, it was definitely Guided
- 5:45by my energy with everyone. Had a lot of input and I
- 5:48remember the number one issue was the communication Styles.
- 5:52Every everyone didn't know how to communicate with each other
- 5:55and how to get the best from each other.
- 5:58Because I don't I don't know if we selfishly wanted to.
- 6:00I think we were all individual businesses trying to cohesively
- 6:03work together when we all had different goals and different
- 6:06plants and how we wanted to do things.
- 6:10So there has to be a natural, a natural desire to, to fight, and
- 6:19to work in to operate for a higher purpose.
- 6:24And overall mission that that has not been individually
- 6:27identified. I think what you can expect at a
- 6:34productivity level of self manage organizations is going to
- 6:37be really tough in the first six to eight months because that's
- 6:39the alignment period. But then I think you had a I
- 6:43think you hit a Groove and a pocket of scale and speed and
- 6:48momentum that you need to, you need to press down on.
- 6:52I was just saying it to my partner today.
- 6:56I said, look, I'm seeing with a company store from afar.
- 6:58I'm respecting with the company's doing from afar.
- 7:01I love the fact that I can support in any way possible and
- 7:04and I'm feeling a pocket of alignment.
- 7:06I'm feeling some momentum here. I feel like I'm starting to
- 7:10really wrap my head around what we're doing and how we're
- 7:12navigating the things and, and you only get that alignment if
- 7:16both individuals are are Are so competitive with themselves
- 7:23around staying on top of their, their, their, their duties,
- 7:26their knowledge, or understanding of something that
- 7:29it's, they don't want to conflict with their own value
- 7:31set. now, the biggest question before I wrap this episodes,
- 7:38this is more just a therapeutic rant about The importance of
- 7:43this but to actually recruit a sub managing organization in a
- 7:47team and a leader. What does that look like?
- 7:51I'll tell you one simple way to do it.
- 7:55It starts with talking about it. It starts with defining and
- 7:59talking about all the different factors of what a self-managed,
- 8:02you organization and team, and human being looks and feels like
- 8:07And it starts by paying attention to how someone reacts.
- 8:12And navigates that question and the in that response.
- 8:17And it starts with honesty. Self managing organizations,
- 8:25teams leaders departments are needed inside of your,
- 8:30traditional for-profit company. That has your traditional
- 8:33hierarchy. Leaders today, start allowing
- 8:38your people to navigate work with more fluidity with more
- 8:42flexibility. Focus on the objective outcome
- 8:47that we're all chasing after. What I love most is that if
- 8:52you're paying someone a hundred and fifty thousand dollars a
- 8:54year to draw the sale, it doesn't matter if Rob found the
- 8:58sale or, or if Derek found the sale or Andrew found the seal,
- 9:02or vraja found the sale or, or Trevor found, it doesn't matter
- 9:05who found the sale, everyone plays A Part.
- 9:11I love the sales teams and I love this companies out there.
- 9:13There's a there's an overall company and Department bonus
- 9:17structure and goal. We're all working together to
- 9:22make things happen. It starts with being honest, and
- 9:27it starts by definitely Define what that looks like.
- 9:31Standing back watching reaction. And consistently drumming home,
- 9:36that Honesty throughout the entire interview process, you do
- 9:39that. You're off to a good start.
- 9:44Maybe I'll do a part two of this as always just a few thoughts.
- 9:48Just a few perspectives. We'll talk soon.
- 9:44Maybe I'll do a part two of this as always just a few thoughts.
- 9:48Just a few perspectives. We'll talk soon.
