- 0:24With that in mind, let's grow. Know the secrets to peak
- 0:28performance that many Olympic and NCA champions and even the
- 0:32top high school athletes have in common?
- 0:35Well, I do. They use lactate data to drive
- 0:38their daily training. Hi, this is Shannon Grady,
- 0:42sports physiologist, Lactate Queen CEO, founder of the My Via
- 0:48app and author of the Lactate Revolution.
- 0:52Just a little background on me. I ran track in high school where
- 0:55I became the number one recruit and I went on to run track at
- 0:59the University of Florida where I ultimately became a graduate
- 1:02assistant under Coach JJ Clark. I went on to become a
- 1:07professional elite runner and triathlete where I have 4 top
- 1:11ten world championship finishes in the ITU Triathlon World
- 1:15Championships. Over the course of this series
- 1:19on sports science applications and running, I'm going to dive
- 1:23into the, quote, secret science behind many of the top
- 1:27performers that have graced our nation's top runners for the
- 1:30past two decades. My love affair with lactate
- 1:33began in 1999 when I was a sports physiologist at the
- 1:38United States Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA, where
- 1:43my main job was testing and consulting our nation's top
- 1:46Olympic athletes and coaches. And then I went on to perform
- 1:51testing and consulting for hundreds of coaches and over
- 1:54100,000 athletes in over 25 sports across the globe.
- 1:59For over 2 decades I've worked in the background applying in
- 2:03depth analysis and applied Physiology to the success of
- 2:06thousands of athletes and programs which which led to
- 2:10numerous NCAA, Olympic and World Champions.
- 2:14In fact, just this past 2024 Olympic Trials, six of the 12
- 2:20women in the semi final of the women's 800 had either tested
- 2:25with me or a coach I work with and uses or has used my model in
- 2:29their college or pro training careers.
- 2:33But why did my journey begin? Well, because I was working at
- 2:39the US Olympic Training Center. I did what most sports
- 2:44scientists do. I have one of the top positions
- 2:47in the country as a sports physiologist, and I thought,
- 2:50wow, this is going to be awesome.
- 2:52I'm going to be providing our nation's top athletes with the
- 2:55best information and the best resources in order to make
- 2:59Olympic champions from Team USA. So I did what most sports
- 3:04scientists do. I performed testing.
- 3:07I collected data, I analyzed data, but I provided no
- 3:12actionable insights to those coaches or athletes.
- 3:16I would test, analyze, rinse and repeat.
- 3:19Coaches and athletes would go on their merry way, continue the
- 3:22same training, and hope the next time they came to the center to
- 3:26get tested that their tests got better.
- 3:29They got some nice data, but no actionable solutions for our
- 3:33nation's Olympic athletes. What?
- 3:36Like, what is going on here? This approach was just not
- 3:39enough for me. I was actually in a unique
- 3:42position as an elite athlete and sports scientist.
- 3:46I wanted the data, but I also wanted solutions.
- 3:50How can I improve? Why is this training not working
- 3:52for me or somebody else, yet somebody else that's doing the
- 3:56same training is making great improvements?
- 3:59This was the ultimate question. That is when my mission began.
- 4:04Figure out the what, why and how to improve human performances.
- 4:10I got out from behind the data and integrated with athletes and
- 4:13coaches in the masses. Over the next 6 to 8 years is
- 4:17when I built my model. I've tested thousands of
- 4:21athletes, more than 100,000 tests, and some athletes were
- 4:24tested every 4:00 to 6:00 every four to six weeks for four or
- 4:29more years straight. This is what it took for me to
- 4:33create a repeatable, predictable model of stimulus response to be
- 4:39able to precisely train lactate. That's right, you heard it.
- 4:44I'm precisely training lactate. I did this through various
- 4:47workout manipulations such as specific pace, pace designations
- 4:53for each athlete, work intervals, rest intervals, and
- 4:56total volume to create predictable, repeatable lactate
- 5:00responses across the entire lactate spectrum.
- 5:03And what I did was address all four important aspects of
- 5:06lactate dynamics, which includes clearing or elimination, lactate
- 5:12buffering, lactate shuttling, and lactate production.
- 5:16Not once did I just focus on the quote UN quote standard lactate
- 5:21threshold or flattening that lactate curve, but I, I went to
- 5:26actually focus beyond that quote UN quote lactate threshold and
- 5:31all aspects of lactate dynamics, which to the shock of many are
- 5:38important. All of those aspects, the
- 5:42clearing elimination, the buffering, the shuttling, and
- 5:45the production all lead to human performance optimization and
- 5:49performance gains. Today I'm going to kick things
- 5:53off and talk about the basics of lactate, demystifying what it
- 5:57really is and why it can be your secret weapon too.
- 6:02In training for athletes, coaches young and old, whether
- 6:05you're just starting out in track and field or a long time
- 6:08veteran of the sport, lactate can be your secret weapon.
- 6:11Using lactate data effectively can maximize performance at any
- 6:15level and take the guesswork out of planning your training.
- 6:20Most people think lactate is some villain that you need to
- 6:23get rid of or train to make less of it.
- 6:25Well, they're wrong. Lactate is the key to success.
- 6:30Lactate is actually the human energy currency and the fuel
- 6:35lactate. The lactate energy spectrum
- 6:39actually ranges from .7 to 32 millimoles per liter.
- 6:44Those are the units in which lactate is measured.
- 6:47I over the course of my my years of studying lactate in masses in
- 6:51depth in in in the real world scenarios of real world
- 6:55athletes, I break the lactate spectrum into 8 lactate systems.
- 7:02And each of those lactate systems actually has unique
- 7:04characteristics that all work together not only to create
- 7:08optimized performance, but also to regulate metabolism, balance
- 7:14homeostasis, and also balance hormones.
- 7:19By only focusing on the traditional and quite frankly
- 7:22antiquated concepts such as lactate threshold or the old LT1
- 7:27or LT2, you will not only limit physiological development and
- 7:34performance. But this approach of only
- 7:37focusing on LT1LT2 or lactate threshold, which are all areas
- 7:42of lactate under 4 millimoles will most definitely lead to
- 7:48negative health impacts, not only performance impacts but
- 7:52health impacts. So this traditional approach is
- 7:56is of focusing on LT1LT2 or lactate threshold.
- 8:00Everything under 4 millimoles is actually leading to detrimental
- 8:05effects in athletes performances and their health.
- 8:12Lactate contribution across the spectrum is and in order to
- 8:18perform work or to your performances is what I kind of
- 8:22like to compare to an assembly line.
- 8:25If you're trying to build cars on an assembly line, you're
- 8:29going to need various, all the parts of that assembly line are
- 8:32important to go into the production of the total number
- 8:36of cars. So if you're trying to produce
- 8:38cars and you've got 100 engines but you only have 50 steering
- 8:45wheels, you're only going to make 50 complete cars because
- 8:49you're missing parts. So the work output and the
- 8:52production of making cars is going to be limited by one of
- 8:56those parts that goes into that assembly line.
- 8:58Well, performances are are exactly the same thing.
- 9:02You have to take into consideration the entire lactate
- 9:06spectrum, all of those parts, all of those 8 lactate systems
- 9:11that go into performances and work output in order to maximize
- 9:16and optimize the outcome. We cannot just sit back and only
- 9:22focus on 2 millimoles or filler millimoles, the lactate
- 9:25threshold or quite frankly anyone lactate system, you're
- 9:30going to reduce your performance and total work output.
- 9:34And here's another news flash. Guess what?
- 9:37There's no single lactate threshold.
- 9:40The concept is probably what 99% of the public understands about
- 9:46lactate is what's my lactate threshold and how do I train to
- 9:50reduce to improve lactate threshold?
- 9:54Well, this concept of a single or even 2 lactate thresholds LT1
- 9:59Lt. 2 is limited and quite frankly antiquated.
- 10:03There is actually a quote UN quote threshold or more aptly
- 10:07term which I I never use the word lactate threshold.
- 10:11I call them lactate capacities because there's actually a
- 10:14lactate capacity to do work at every unit of lactate from .7 to
- 10:1932 millimoles. So there's actually 32 lactate
- 10:24quote UN quote thresholds in the human body.
- 10:27Again, lactate is simply the human energy currency.
- 10:32I measure a lactate in terms of power and I developed a metric
- 10:36called the bioenergetic power, Bioenergetic Power score.
- 10:41So athletes can have objective data to understand and see how
- 10:46their lactate is, is developing across eight of those lactate,
- 10:52all eight of those lactate systems across the spectrum.
- 10:55And we train capacity or quote, UN quote threshold at each of
- 11:00those 8 targeted systems. And the combination of
- 11:04understanding your lactate power and your lactate capacity across
- 11:08the entire spectrum is what ultimately is going to give
- 11:13coaches athletes deep insights as to better decisions they're
- 11:18going to make to decide which type of training do I need?
- 11:21Because now we have a clear, precise picture of the each
- 11:25athlete's underlying Physiology. And if you can see exactly where
- 11:30they're lacking, you can make better decisions on which type
- 11:34of training each athlete needs in order to develop their
- 11:38Physiology. But and then ultimately which
- 11:41will lead to better performances.
- 11:44If you perform any sort of lactate threshold test and you
- 11:48see an exponential jump in lactate readings, really all
- 11:51that means is you fail to train appropriately and there's
- 11:54actually a weakness in your Physiology and lactate system.
- 11:58So looking for these exponential jumps is not really something
- 12:02that you want to base your testing on or look for these
- 12:05lactate thresholds per SE. You're really trying to make
- 12:09sure that we're not, we don't have weaknesses in any lactate
- 12:12system because that's going to, again, take away from your
- 12:18performances. In fact, one of the most common
- 12:25areas of physiological weakness and neglect is the upper and
- 12:29aerobic systems, what I refer to as ARC 1, Arc 2, and Arc 3,
- 12:34which are all above this magical formulamole mark that everybody
- 12:39loves to focus on. Almost every single athlete that
- 12:43I test has a weakness above that magical formulamole.
- 12:48These traditional concepts of lactate threshold mark.
- 12:52And once we start targeting these upper end lactate systems
- 12:57to improve their power and capacity, that's when we see the
- 13:04performances start to skyrocket and also be have less plateaus
- 13:10and and less as unless regressions in those athlete
- 13:13performances. Some of the practical
- 13:17applications of lactate is that you can use that lactate data to
- 13:23identify areas of weakness and decide which types of workouts
- 13:29are appropriate and which paces are appropriate to target in any
- 13:33level athlete from beginner to Olympic champion.
- 13:37I'll discuss these topics in more detail in episode 2.
- 13:42In short, embracing lactate basics empowers athletes of all
- 13:45levels to train smarter, not harder.
- 13:49Basic training around lactate system is the foundation of my
- 13:53system based training approach which has helped Olympians and
- 13:57world champions worldwide for over 25 sports, but it is now
