- 0:01Welcome to the Blow Your mind podcast.
- 0:03If you're trying to figure out who you are, where headed, or
- 0:06how to trust yourself in the middle of it all, this show is
- 0:09for you. I'm Erica Sinner.
- 0:12I grew up in a trailer park on food stamps and I went on to
- 0:14build a multi 8 figure award-winning company without a
- 0:18safety net and without pretending it was easy.
- 0:21I'm now a CEOA best selling author and a philanthropist and
- 0:24what I've learned is this real confidence isn't a feeling, it's
- 0:28self trust built through evidence.
- 0:30This is a place for real conversations.
- 0:33You'll hear from me and occasionally my husband Chris as
- 0:35we talk honestly about real life and the standards and decisions
- 0:39that separate talk from results. Let's blow your mind.
- 0:45Have you ever told somebody something and then you weren't
- 0:48believed and you think about how that made you feel?
- 0:53Can you imagine telling somebody something when you were 12 years
- 0:57old and they actually do believe you, but then nobody does
- 1:01anything about it? That's what happened to me.
- 1:04I am a sexual abuse survivor within my own family.
- 1:10I was 12 years old and I had the courage to tell my mom.
- 1:15So I wasn't right. Something wasn't right and she
- 1:19believed me and at the time she actually shared that it happened
- 1:22to her too and that she was going to tell the family and we
- 1:26we were going to do something about this.
- 1:27This wasn't going to happen to anyone else.
- 1:30And interesting things happened after that moment.
- 1:34I think a lot of discussions happened with my family.
- 1:37We're also a Mexican American family.
- 1:39We were in a small little racist town at the time.
- 1:42And so at the time, it was very much a, hey, we're, we're a
- 1:46family unit and blood is thicker than water.
- 1:50And we promise it's never going to happen to you again.
- 1:52But like, can we just be quiet about it?
- 1:55And can we just like stick together as a family and just
- 1:57move forward? And the thing about that is the,
- 2:03the way you can start to feel about yourself.
- 2:06And am I worth protecting? And what does this mean?
- 2:10And would it have been better if they didn't believe me?
- 2:12If I had for my whole life felt like, gosh, maybe I, I could
- 2:18have said it differently. Maybe they, they would have done
- 2:20something if they would have believed that it was true, but
- 2:22it was just a completely different experience when they
- 2:25actually absolutely do believe that it is true.
- 2:28And then you find out it happened to other members in
- 2:31your family, your cousins, and nothing happened.
- 2:35I want to welcome you to the Blow Your Mind podcast episode.
- 2:39This one's a heavy one and it's heavy for a lot of reasons
- 2:44because today we're going to talk about the first part of my
- 2:47framework, the Blow Your Mind framework.
- 2:49And it's all around identity and who you are in the world and who
- 2:54do you want to be in the world? But before you can do that,
- 2:59right, I, I, you see from other people who say you just got to
- 3:01decide who you are and then just fake it till you make it.
- 3:04And that's really tough. Like, how do you just fake it
- 3:06till you make it? But also how do you just get to
- 3:09decide who you are when inside you might be feeling all of the
- 3:13stories that you believe are true about yourself based on
- 3:17things that have happened to you.
- 3:19The story I shared to me signaled that I wasn't worth
- 3:23protecting, that maybe survival was the best that I could hope
- 3:29for in life, and I just needed to be a good girl and stick with
- 3:33the family and continue to move forward.
- 3:35And don't worry, it's never going to happen again.
- 3:38That led to years of unworthiness and a lack of
- 3:42confidence and low self esteem that are just beyond.
- 3:48You know, my dad also left when I was really young.
- 3:50He actually fell in love with my mom's best friend and had a
- 3:54whole other family and I was a daddy's girl.
- 3:56And I just still remember that day he brought us home and he
- 3:59was unzipping my jacket and he didn't unzip his.
- 4:03And I was like, what's happening?
- 4:05And he told us that day that I have a new family now.
- 4:09And you're just going to have to understand that another really
- 4:13hard moment in my life of just not being chosen, not being
- 4:16picked right? Like in my life, if I was ever
- 4:19not picked to be on a team, if I was ever not chosen by my
- 4:22friends, like, I don't think anything was going to hurt as
- 4:24bad as my own dad not choosing me.
- 4:27And again, what are the stories that you tell yourself about
- 4:30that moment that my my own father didn't pick me?
- 4:35So what does that say about me? My own family didn't want to do
- 4:39anything beyond us just staying quiet and just creating, you
- 4:43know, distance. What does that say about me?
- 4:47I if you've been listening and following along, I shared the
- 4:49story of the time that I got fired, where now it wasn't just
- 4:52my dad that didn't take me as my boss, who said I don't want you
- 4:54on the team. You start to really realize how
- 4:57much of your identity is shaped by the experiences that you've
- 5:00had in your life, but also what you believe is true about
- 5:03yourself based on experiences that have happened and shaped
- 5:07you. And that's the cost of not
- 5:11choosing yourself is when you start to believe the stories
- 5:15about yourself. Like every single one of us is
- 5:17living inside a story. We didn't consciously choose
- 5:21stories like I'm not enough, or I have to prove myself, or I
- 5:26can't trust people or I'm the one who has to hold it all
- 5:29together. But you guys like, these aren't
- 5:32facts. These aren't truths about our
- 5:35lives. If I talked to any of my family
- 5:38or friends today and said, do you believe I'm not worthy?
- 5:40They would say no, of course not.
- 5:43We're so proud of you. Look at all of the things you've
- 5:44accomplished that these are deep seated things that I've had to
- 5:48live with, that you've had to live with.
- 5:49When you think about what are the stories that you believe
- 5:52about yourself that aren't true? And that's a beautiful thing
- 5:56about the framework, is you get to decide who you want to be.
- 6:01And I believe we all must decide who we're going to be next.
- 6:05Like it is an honor, it is a privilege of our lives that we
- 6:08get to just decide today in this moment, because identities there
- 6:13are formed in these moments that we live.
- 6:16And the hardest part is that we do start to build our lives
- 6:19based on the identities that we have.
- 6:21And yes, you can achieve success from your survival identity.
- 6:25You can build companies from it. You can look like you have it
- 6:28all together on the outside. I think if most people met me
- 6:31today, they would be like, Oh my God, she's been confident the
- 6:33whole time. Look at all of the things that
- 6:35she's doing. She wrote a book, she goes on
- 6:37the news, she can be on TV. She built this company.
- 6:40She's got it all figured out. And I can't tell you the amount
- 6:43of times my husband has found me crying in my closet, which is
- 6:46like my sanctuary, my safe space where I'm like, why is it so
- 6:48hard? And I know we all have these
- 6:51moments because we are human. But it's also fighting with the
- 6:54the story of yourself every time you want to take the risk, every
- 6:59time you want to do something different.
- 7:01For me, when I decided I was going to start showing up on
- 7:06social media in a different way, I started to think like, what
- 7:08will people think? What like why?
- 7:11Why do we care so much about what we, what people will think,
- 7:14right? They're actually probably
- 7:15cheering you on even if they're not commenting and if even if
- 7:18they're not liking you can be an inspiration.
- 7:19You can be an example of what is possible.
- 7:22And so as you think about identity in my framework, I talk
- 7:26a lot about not only first deciding what is the identity
- 7:30that you want for yourself. For me, I always knew I wanted
- 7:33to be a leader. I wanted to be a builder, I
- 7:34wanted to be a problem solver. I wanted to be somebody who
- 7:37trusts myself. I wanted to be somebody who who
- 7:40does it, does the things that she says that she's going to do
- 7:44and like blow people's mind. And I finally got to look back
- 7:48and be like, Oh my God, I think I've blown my own mind.
- 7:50But it's not just really deciding who you're going to be.
- 7:53It's writing that down for sure. It's OK.
- 7:56Here's here is who I want to be. But what identity shifts
- 7:59actually need to change in your own mind to make that identity
- 8:05become a reality? And what I mean by identity
- 8:07shifts is, for example, my identity shifts are I speak up
- 8:12for myself in every situation because I want to be a leader.
- 8:16I want to be a builder, I want to be a problem solver.
- 8:18But to know in my mind, the identity shift as I speak up for
- 8:21myself in every situation makes me proud.
- 8:24Or I do the things I say I'm going to do the days that I
- 8:27don't want to work out. And let me tell you, I hate
- 8:30working out. I hate it, I hate it.
- 8:33But it's been really amazing to be in children's hospitals when
- 8:36I do work out and a child gets so excited and they run into my
- 8:39arms and they fall into them and they're connected to all of the
- 8:41machines and I can hold them because my legs are steady.
- 8:44Because all of those squats I didn't want to do actually paid
- 8:48off. All of those things really
- 8:50matter because the identity I said was I work out when I say
- 8:53I'm going to. I'm going to show up when I say
- 8:55I'm going to. And what all of that leads to
- 8:57when you really sit down and say, here is who I want to be,
- 9:00here is the identity shifts that I want to make.
- 9:03It leads to somebody who follows through, somebody who other
- 9:08people can trust. But most importantly, it leads
- 9:12to you realizing you can trust yourself.
- 9:15Every time I do a workout that I didn't want to do after that,
- 9:18I'm like, man, I really am a person who does what she says
- 9:21she's going to do. And it doesn't always have to be
- 9:23working out. My identity shifts have been
- 9:25like I take care of my body, which was also something that
- 9:27was not taught to me early on in my life.
- 9:29And now if you follow me on Instagram, you see, I do my
- 9:33morning face immersion where I literally put my face in a cold
- 9:36bowl of ice and water and it wakes me up.
- 9:40It resets my nervous system. It does a lot for me for even
- 9:44just like my mindset, but also as it's like a ritual.
- 9:46These are like my morning rituals that ground me and set
- 9:49me up for the rest of my day. And when I do those kinds of
- 9:53things again, it's this, like this is who I said I was going
- 9:56to be. This is the life I want to lead
- 9:58and this is the identity of who I am.
- 10:00And I can just decide that one day I just decided I was going
- 10:03to do this super well. My friend Lauren Pronger, shout
- 10:06out to you because you taught it to me. 3 seconds or 3 * 10
- 10:11seconds. And that's all you need to start
- 10:13your day in any bowl that you have.
- 10:14I even do it when I travel. But when I decided I'm going to
- 10:17start doing this face immersion and then I decided I'm going to
- 10:20start sharing it online, the amount of people who have
- 10:23practiced it for themselves sent me like I did my morning face
- 10:26immersion today. You start to see the ripple
- 10:28effect of what is possible when you put yourself out there, when
- 10:31you do something different. And it really today, my mind
- 10:36blown moment is that you can just decide.
- 10:39And I, I think it's deciding with intention and it's deciding
- 10:43with a, with a commitment. You know, when I was in my 20s,
- 10:46I went to therapy. I've been through a lot of
- 10:48therapy for a lot of things that I've been through in my life.
- 10:50I've been working on myself for a really long time.
- 10:53But my therapist at the time had said, just put a sticky note on
- 10:55your bathroom that says I am worthy and just look at it every
- 10:58single day. And you guys, I did every every
- 11:01day I'm like brushing my teeth. And I think sometimes I like
- 11:03brush really hard 'cause I would read this note and just be like,
- 11:05I am worthy. I'm worthy.
- 11:07But as you probably imagine, like nothing happened because it
- 11:12was just an affirmation on a sticky note.
- 11:14You cannot rewrite your identity with a sentence with an
- 11:18affirmation that's on a mirror of, of a window.
- 11:22I truly believe you cannot build the life that you want out of
- 11:26the life that you survived or the identity that you survived.
- 11:30I want to say that again, you cannot build the life that you
- 11:33want out of the identity of the life that you survived.
- 11:38If I kept believing all of those stories about me that weren't
- 11:40true, I would never have said yes.
- 11:42To be on TV, to write a book, to take on tiny superheroes.
- 11:47And now I've built a company. I have employees.
- 11:50We have impacted over 100 million patients.
- 11:53We are transforming pediatric care across America.
- 11:56Because I decided who my identity was.
- 11:59That I'm not that girl from the trailer park on food stamps.
- 12:02I'm not that girl that doesn't get chosen.
- 12:04I'm not the girl that's not worthy of being protected.
- 12:07And I'm not going to look at a sticky note that says I am
- 12:09worthy and try to make myself feel differently.
- 12:11No, I'm going to decide who I am.
- 12:16And so that's what I want for you today.
- 12:18I want you to take time thinking about what are the stories that
- 12:21you believe about yourself that just aren't true, that you have
- 12:24believed are facts for so long and they're not.
- 12:28And then I want you to start dreaming of who you want to be
- 12:33and write it down. Hold it for yourself and make
- 12:36the commitment to yourself that you're going to start making
- 12:39some identity shifts to get you to who you're becoming.
- 12:44Thank you so much for being here with me.
- 12:46I don't take it for granted and I I feel really connected to all
- 12:49of you. I'm imagining all of you in your
- 12:52lives in different States and different places and hoping that
- 12:57something and some part of today's show really touched a
- 13:01nerve with you or that some there's some moment that you had
- 13:04where you're like, Oh my God, maybe those things aren't true
- 13:06about myself. I think about you guys a lot.
- 13:08And I also have been thinking about the courage that it's
- 13:11taken to come out and to share my story and to be here with all
- 13:14of you. And I want to hear about some of
- 13:16the things that you might not have that you've believed are
- 13:19true about your whole life and realize that they're they're not
- 13:21facts and they're not true. And DM me, message me.
- 13:25Take the moment and be brave and put yourself out there and
- 13:28decide who you want to be because it is such a privilege
- 13:31that we do get to do for ourselves.
- 13:35And that's pretty awesome. So thank you for being on the
- 13:38show and I can't wait till next time.
- 13:41We'll see you then. Thanks for listening to the Blow
- 13:46Your Mind podcast. If something you heard today
