- 0:17Thank you, Jeremy, and welcome back to the Inside Maine.
- 0:19I'm your host Sean Moody today. It's beautiful day in Maine and
- 0:24we've been talking a lot of shop here today.
- 0:26We just talking to Kenny Chin cap if you want to go on.
- 0:28I think he said it was Kenny Chinkat for Senate.
- 0:32If you'd like to donate or participate, He'd love to have
- 0:36the support. He's running for the the
- 0:38district of Windham and some of Westbrook, Sebago, Frye Island.
- 0:42I think he said Standish. So that's a big area.
- 0:45Lot of good people in that area. And the podcast is not up yet,
- 0:49but it will be it will be shortly after the show is done.
- 0:53Appreciate it, Jeremy. All right, we'll go to the final
- 0:57homestretch here. If you want to join the program.
- 0:59We were trying to solicit calls on it.
- 1:01What do you think's going to happen a couple weeks, two weeks
- 1:03from Tuesday is the the primary for both the Republicans and the
- 1:07Democrats in a lot of offices. So should be interesting.
- 1:12879-9426 got an opinion, got a candidate that you want to put a
- 1:18plug in for or any candidates out there that want to call?
- 1:21We had a couple call in 879-9426.
- 1:24You're welcome to have a few minutes on air to say where,
- 1:27what you're running for, who you are, a little bit about
- 1:29yourself. Give a call 879-9426.
- 1:34Yeah. I think, you know, we talked
- 1:36earlier about the state of the state.
- 1:38I don't want to get people to skirt it as beautiful Memorial
- 1:41Day weekend. It's the thing it that it's hard
- 1:48to do describe to somebody or I guess project to somebody is
- 1:52that not unlike the federal government where our budget is
- 1:58just continually increased and the deficit is increased in
- 2:01Maine, we've got to operate on a biannual balanced budget.
- 2:07Now how that budget gets balanced, OK, there's, so
- 2:09there's some magic in, in all of that.
- 2:12And there's often times where they do supplemental budgets,
- 2:17which means they've overspent and they need to get more money
- 2:20appropriated. And at some point, OK, the well
- 2:23runs dry and that's when tax increases hit.
- 2:27In this last round, they increased taxes on small
- 2:30businesses or businesses in Maine 2828%.
- 2:34Not many people know that. They call it a 2% surcharge, but
- 2:3728% increase in the pass through entity business taxes here in
- 2:42the state of Maine they did not allow, OK, they rejected no tax
- 2:46on tips. They rejected no tax on
- 2:48overtime. So that has a big economic drag
- 2:52on Maine's economy because that money would have gone into the
- 2:54pockets of hard work and Maine is which would have spent that
- 2:57money. So that's how you generate
- 2:58economic activity and stimulate activity is through tax
- 3:03incentives. And that would have been a big
- 3:05economic boost here in the state of Maine.
- 3:08We got Thad Cohen on line 2. Thad, welcome to INSIDE Main.
- 3:12Well Shawnee welcome fantastic show with.
- 3:15Always. Jeez, I'm glad you called, Ted.
- 3:16I know I saw you call right at the end of a break back, so I'm
- 3:20glad you called back. Well, I think Ken was doing a
- 3:23magnificent job on on on your show.
- 3:25That guy certainly would be my vote for sure.
- 3:30Fatty, what do you think of the, you know, the, the races in in
- 3:35Maine on the gubernatorial race, you know, we got the Democrat
- 3:38line up, we got the Republican line up.
- 3:42It's like. Coming to an head here.
- 3:44I think, Johnny, what you just said was previous before you
- 3:47taking my phone call is about everything that the legislature
- 3:50didn't do, but yet they passed the supplemental budget.
- 3:53So my answer to one of your questions is I suddenly wouldn't
- 3:57vote for anybody that voted for the supplemental budget.
- 4:00It would be that that simple, especially with $155,000,000
- 4:04going back to affordable checks, the $300 check per person that
- 4:11that qualifies, that's just ridiculous.
- 4:13I know you don't say I don't even how just constitutionally
- 4:17they're allowed to do. It's the rain, it's the state
- 4:20budget stabilization fund. So I think just that that title
- 4:23alone tells you that it's for an economic downturn or something,
- 4:28some way to have, you know, a rainy day fund, they call it
- 4:32whatever, but you know, funds available in cases an economic
- 4:36downturn, not just discriminate what he's saying we're going to
- 4:40take 2 or 300 million and hand some money out.
- 4:42I just, I don't know how they pull that off.
- 4:44Well, Shawny and and again I know of 1 legislature that again
- 4:49had proposed to eliminate electricity sales tax to a
- 4:54certain part of what we paid sales tax on now and that didn't
- 4:57even pass. Yeah, yeah.
- 4:59And then? Not serious.
- 5:01Though lowering those costs, Eddie, well, you got to, you
- 5:04know, Fatty, you're on the right track because, you know, we're
- 5:06talking about the gubernatorial primary, which is important.
- 5:10But really what you're saying is if we don't, if we don't change
- 5:13the chairs of the Legislature, we're, we're sunk.
- 5:18I I think in how this behooves me to no end, Janet Mills.
- 5:24Governor Mills lambasted Grand Platinum lately.
- 5:28She's the one that started with the nasty ads right off the get
- 5:32go. Now how in the world now
- 5:34Democrats that supported Governor Mills can now support
- 5:38Grand Platinum is beyond me. How morally or ethically could
- 5:42you even consider doing something like that?
- 5:45That's a good point, Daddy, right?
- 5:47Yeah. And I don't know.
- 5:48I don't. I'm not aware that Governor
- 5:50Mills has endorsed Grandpa, but she'll be under tremendous
- 5:53pressure to do so. Let's face it that that party is
- 5:58they take no prisoners. Well, Sony, the other thing is
- 6:01how individuals, whether you agree with Senator Collins, she
- 6:08has added more to the state that people don't realize.
- 6:12Can you imagine Graham Plantner sitting down and trying to
- 6:15negotiate deals for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard?
- 6:18Bath Iron works in Jim Bro I I I think the state of Maine would
- 6:24lose so much without Senator Collins continuing for another
- 6:29term. Well, it it just begs the
- 6:32question that I think you saw it.
- 6:33When when that was six years ago now Sarah Gideon, right Sarah
- 6:39Gideon ran against Senator Collins and it had her Sarah
- 6:42Gideon her leading in the polls and this and that and she she
- 6:45was running on. We don't need any a bigger
- 6:49military. We don't need destroyer.
- 6:51You know, she didn't come right out and say we're going to close
- 6:53by fireworks, but basically policy decisions would create
- 6:56that to happen. And you're right grand plan has
- 6:59been the same thing. We don't need this, you know,
- 7:02conflicts and military and that war machine or whatever.
- 7:05So when you think about again, trades jobs, right, Boo collar,
- 7:09Boo collar, Maine just comes up short every single time with
- 7:12these politicians. We we would lose.
- 7:16It would go to Louisiana, it would go to all kinds of other
- 7:18states that would love to build what whatever it is as a
- 7:22governmental contract. And Susan Collins seems to have
- 7:25kept the state going quite well in the right direction by making
- 7:29sure we had those. Yep.
- 7:32No, Daddy, I appreciate you calling in and and now your
- 7:34insights because it's it's going to be interesting.
- 7:37Well. My my best I can you Sony, you
- 7:41said it right? For him to lose and then jump
- 7:43back into the saddle could be him.
- 7:45I hope he makes it. Yeah, thanks.
- 7:47Have have a great weekend. You too.
- 7:49Thank you all. Right, brother.
- 7:52That's my brother Thad. Yeah.
- 7:54I love it when he calls in. He's got, he's got so much
- 7:57insights. Unbelievable.
- 7:58You think about his, his career, he started out at Cook's
- 8:01Hardware in high school, you know, 15-16 years old.
- 8:04And I think at 1918 and 19, he was managing the place.
- 8:09You know, he was, he was assistant manager and then
- 8:11became the manager. They had multiple locations and
- 8:14he, he was with the Cook family for 25 years.
- 8:18And somehow, someway miracle that we got him on board at
- 8:21Moody's and he led our company for 12 years and worked a total
- 8:25of 27 together, which we still work together.
- 8:28He's still working one week a month.
- 8:29So it's it's pretty remarkable run that we've had together.
- 8:33We just did a resort town halls, which that's how we announce the
- 8:37stock price to all our shareholders, which happen to be
- 8:40our Co workers and Danielle, our daughter Danielle now is
- 8:43president of the company. And so she and I jump in the
- 8:46truck and drive all over Maine and our our stock value of last
- 8:52year went up 20%. You know, just, it's pretty
- 8:55extraordinary and I'll tell you just we got 75 people in our
- 9:00leadership that we've developed over, you know, the last decade
- 9:04as we've grown is really the backbone of of our organization.
- 9:08And Thad LED that and then Danielle took over just after
- 9:11COVID and done, done an amazing job.
- 9:14I think we were I think 28 1/2 percent, 25% and 20% in three
- 9:18years. And it's hard to, you know, for
- 9:20business owners or just maybe you know, people owning stocks
- 9:23and own the stock market, what not, you understand how
- 9:25difficult it is to grow a business. 20% is of our, of our
- 9:30size. You know, it's one thing if you
- 9:32got one shop, you had another shop.
- 9:33Well, you could grow 20% pretty easily.
- 9:36But you know, it's, it's, as you scale up, it becomes
- 9:39increasingly difficult. A lot of things got to go right.
- 9:43We got the main, the best places to work recognition last round.
- 9:48I think we're a third. We, we were in the medium duty,
- 9:51medium category up to 250 Co workers.
- 9:55I think it was and I think we placed 4th.
- 9:58I believe I might have this backwards.
- 10:01I think we, I think we were third in the state.
- 10:04And then this last round we're upped.
- 10:05We're almost 300 Co workers now. So we're in a big, big category
- 10:10and we captured 4th. So that's, and again, we're,
- 10:14we're competing against banks and credit unions.
- 10:17You know, we, we, we're starting at 7 and going till 5 and what
- 10:21we do is not easy and we're a Hardy bunch.
- 10:25So to, you know, establish those, those that feedback,
- 10:30those scores are all, it's all done.
- 10:33Those questionnaires are all anonymous.
- 10:35So, you know, our Co workers rank us any way they see fit.
- 10:38And that's exactly why we do it. We want to know how our Co
- 10:41workers feel about how we're being treated.
- 10:43You know how it benefits and packages and what leadership if
- 10:47they have respect and trust in the leadership, they understand
- 10:50the mission of our organization. There's there's about 70
- 10:54questions that they ask. They're they're really pertinent
- 10:57to to the culture of of our company.
- 11:00And then it's an extraordinary process.
- 11:02I I didn't encourage any business to participate in Maine
- 11:06best places to work. It's it's it's really helps you
- 11:10grow and improve your organization.
- 11:13We have Tony call from Standish. Tony, welcome to inside Maine.
- 11:18Thank you. Very much for taking my call.
- 11:21Absolutely. I just had, you know, a few
- 11:24comments as it relates to Graham Plattner and I, I think of his
- 11:32being, and it's come out that he's 100% disabled from the VA.
- 11:38And you know, I, I honor people that served in the military.
- 11:41I, I never did, but I, I think it's, you know, an amazing thing
- 11:46that people volunteer, volunteer a job and they volunteer to
- 11:51defend our country. And I, so I applaud him for
- 11:55that. But to be 100% disabled and then
- 12:00be an oyster farmer, I've looked up what oyster farmers kind of
- 12:04have, what they have to do, and it's an extremely taxing
- 12:09physical job, at least from what I've read.
- 12:12I've read comments by people that have gone into that field
- 12:16and they just say what back breaking work it is.
- 12:19So let's say in Grand Platinus case, it's not physical.
- 12:25It's as to the reason why he has this 100% disability so that
- 12:31it's not physical. It would be PTSD.
- 12:33And then I think to myself, should you have a person sitting
- 12:38in Congress or the Senate? That's one out of 100 votes that
- 12:43has, I guess you'd have to call it a severe case of PTSD, which
- 12:49that tends to people tend to be a little bit unstable if you
- 12:54have that kind of a disability. So I'll leave it at that.
- 12:58I just. Yeah, no surprise.
- 13:00That there hasn't been more. Talked about with that weighing
- 13:03in, yeah, no, I I think, well, I'll let you go Tony, thank you
- 13:07very much for that call. You know, that's a, that's a
- 13:09great, great feedback and great perception because I, I, I think
- 13:16what's happening right now is, you know, that, that these packs
- 13:21are just, you know, attacking one another and attacking
- 13:23Senator Collins as well. So Tony's call is very important
- 13:27because he's bringing us back to some of these questions that
- 13:32should be asked as Tony did really well and describe his
- 13:36opinion on, OK, if it's not this, then what about that?
- 13:40And he's right. That's a very physical activity
- 13:43job. So again, you're just kind of
- 13:45trying to to just give an overview of his condition, not
- 13:51knowing we don't have any medical records to go by.
- 13:53So Tony's just given his opinion, which I agree with what
- 13:56Tony said. So is it is it on the mental
- 14:00health side? And if it is, you know, how do
- 14:02we justify his voters voting for an individual that could be have
- 14:07some mental health challenges that we don't know to what
- 14:10extent? I mean, I, I think you see what
- 14:12they've put in, you know, President Biden through and
- 14:14President Trump through in terms of their ability to serve as
- 14:18president and their mental capacity and the cognitive
- 14:22abilities. We saw obvious decline in
- 14:24President Biden's mental faculties in the last couple of
- 14:28years. And don't you think for one
- 14:30minute, you know, President Trump, they're looking at him,
- 14:33they'd loved him to slip on a step or, you know, something
- 14:38that happened, they could catch that on on film.
- 14:40Are you kidding me? They're ready to pounce on that.
- 14:43So here's a guy that's openly stated that he's 100% disabled,
- 14:47getting compensated for it through the, through the
- 14:51government, which I don't think the government, I the
- 14:53government's from all people that I've talked to is they
- 14:58don't just they don't disqualify you for any level of disability
- 15:02without pretty extensive testing and documentation.
- 15:06They just don't know. It's not giving that out for,
- 15:10you know, they're on it. And so they know there's fraud
- 15:13and there's people who take advantage.
- 15:15So I Tony, I love that call. And I think that just reminds
- 15:18us, let's start looking at the character in the caliber of the
- 15:21individual. It's running for office and they
- 15:24had a, you know, a tattoo on the chess or said a lot of mean and
- 15:28hateful things over the years, whatever.
- 15:30That's just a look at the measure of the man as they stay
- 15:33as he stands right now. What are his policy positions?
- 15:37Ask specific questions. You know, what ifs, you know,
- 15:41foreign policy. See what he has in terms of the
- 15:45depth of knowledge and understanding of how our
- 15:47government works and functions and how he would how he would
- 15:53govern in in that capacity. If he is like Tony said, he's
- 15:56one of one of 100 that's it is over 300 million people in in
- 16:01this country and he'd be 1 of 100 that are run in the country
- 16:04at the Senate level in Congress critical position.
- 16:09If you want to weigh in, give a call 879-9426 and I'm 100% with
- 16:15Tony. I, I see these ads.
- 16:16I just, like, roll my eyes like, Oh, my God, why don't you know,
- 16:20why doesn't someone just get into his record of what is he
- 16:24going to do besides bash Senator Collins and Trump and everything
- 16:29else? You know, that's not to me,
- 16:31That's not a platform. That's a Wrecking Ball.
- 16:34OK, Big difference. So I I this election is coming
- 16:40up to me. Validates.
- 16:45Yeah. To me, it's like, how low.
- 16:47It's like a limbo contest, You know, how low can we go?
- 16:50How low can we go in this country and in the state and we
- 16:55put up with this type of behavior?
- 16:57I don't know. People keep voting, voting
- 17:00candidates in that. I look at it this way.
- 17:03Would you have that person? Would you have that person
- 17:05around your family, around your children?
- 17:07Would you have them working in in your business?
- 17:09Heck no, you know, no way. But yet you wanted them to
- 17:14represent us. That used to be a, a dignified
- 17:18position, some of that that had dignity and respect.
- 17:22And that's the way that our founding fathers really set up
- 17:24our Constitution. They wanted people of high
- 17:27regard, respect in the in their local community, which everyone
- 17:31knew everybody, right? So it would weed out the, the
- 17:34frauds. They got elected, they went and
- 17:37served, whether it's, you know, Congress or the Senate.
- 17:42And then they came home and went back to work.
- 17:44You know, they weren't there for 30 years.
- 17:45So that argument could be made about long term politicians like
- 17:49Senator Collins and I'm and they're making it right.
- 17:52She served too long. That's their claim.
- 17:55So I think fundamentally that's what we need to get back to
- 17:58responsible term limits. And people say, oh, voting, you
- 18:02know, is term limits. Well, when someone's capable of
- 18:04raising 6080 a $100 million to hold on to a seat, you really
- 18:10think that something you know, it's like Congress has an 18%
- 18:15approval rating, but yet 90% of the incumbents get re elected.
- 18:20That tells you all you need to know it.
- 18:22We need to change the structure of our of our government so that
- 18:28it it prevents insider trading. You know, you've heard me talk
- 18:31about crafter congressional reform and their trade act.
- 18:36That was something I put together and basically would be
- 18:39term limits and have tariffs. I'm I'm OK with the tariffs, but
- 18:46have them tied to, to labor laws and environmental.
- 18:49So we could get on the level playing field.
- 18:50China wants to not have tariffs, then match our labor laws and
- 18:55our environmental laws. No problem.
- 18:58We can compete with China if the, if it's a fair and level
- 19:01playing field, compete with anybody.
- 19:05So I think that to me is what needs to happen.
- 19:07You can hire honest or elect honest people, but it's such a
- 19:11small sampling, right? You, you inject 1/2 a dozen
- 19:15honest people into Congress and they're going to get nothing
- 19:19accomplished. They just get steamrolled by the
- 19:22people that have been there and they're not going anywhere.
- 19:26Staff the, you know, the administration and the
- 19:29bureaucrats that just exist down there in Washington, DC.
- 19:32It's not for the faint of heart. So I just want to land on a
- 19:36positive note. Beautiful day.
- 19:38I want to thank everyone for listening and enjoy this, this
- 19:42really memorable Memorial Day weekend.
- 19:45And as Mike Hall from Brunswick said earlier, just just be
- 19:50mindful, visit a cemetery, call a veteran.
- 19:53It's all about the people that have given the ultimate
- 19:55sacrifice for our nation and for us as a society today to keep us
- 20:01free and keep us blessed and keep us prosperous.
- 20:06Thank you very much for listening to the Inside Main.
