- 0:00Hey you guys, welcome back to In THE Stillness.
- 0:03This is friendly. Happy Monday, Happy new week.
- 0:07I hope you had a wonderful weekend.
- 0:09I've actually been doing quite a bit of traveling, so I am now at
- 0:13the beach. And being at the beach is
- 0:15probably my favorite place to do my quiet times.
- 0:19And I feel like the Lord was really encouraging me and just
- 0:23teaching me a lot of new things through verses that I have heard
- 0:28a lot throughout the years. But I just found some new
- 0:32insight and instruction, So I'm looking forward to sharing that
- 0:35with y'all today. I'm especially excited too,
- 0:38because we are closing out First Thessalonians.
- 0:42This letter has been so rich with instruction and practical
- 0:46reminders of how we're meant to live as believers.
- 0:49So I'm super expectant for what the Lord wants to highlight to
- 0:52all of us as we close it out. This morning I'm going to be
- 0:56reading from chapter 5, verses 16 through 28.
- 1:01So let's go ahead and go through those verses.
- 1:05Rejoice, always pray, continually give thanks in all
- 1:09circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.
- 1:15Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with
- 1:18content, but test them all. Hold on to what is good.
- 1:23Reject every kind of evil. May God Himself, the God of
- 1:28peace, sanctify you through and through.
- 1:32May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the
- 1:37coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is
- 1:41faithful, and He will do it. Brothers and sisters, pray for
- 1:46us. Greet all God's people with a
- 1:48holy kiss. I charge you before the Lord to
- 1:52have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters, the grace
- 1:56of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
- 2:00OK, so going right into it, one of the most common questions I
- 2:05think we can hear is people ask what is God's will for my life?
- 2:09And what's so cool about this passage is it actually answers
- 2:13that very directly. Paul says rejoice always, pray
- 2:18continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's
- 2:23will for you. So let's break these down
- 2:25because they're all pointing to something deeper.
- 2:28Living a holy life by walking in obedience and union with God.
- 2:33That's really the anchor of his will for us.
- 2:37That's why he sent Jesus so that we could be restored into
- 2:40relationship with him. So first of all, rejoice always.
- 2:46Now Paul, he obviously has a lot of credibility when he says
- 2:50this. Remember that he is writing so
- 2:53many of his letters while being persecuted.
- 2:56He's in prison, starving, he's sleep deprived, and he's
- 3:00isolated. Yet he's still instructing
- 3:02believers to rejoice. So this is not just about being
- 3:06joyful during the mountaintop moments in the Blessings.
- 3:11It's about choosing joy in the hills and the valleys and
- 3:15everything in between. Practically, this often looks
- 3:18like asking God for His perspective on each situation.
- 3:23For example, something that I like to say a lot is rejection
- 3:28is God's redirection. I was actually having a
- 3:30conversation with one of my friends the other day about
- 3:33this. But how closed doors?
- 3:36They might actually be God protecting or guiding you to
- 3:39somewhere better. Even small inconveniences can
- 3:42shift when you view them through the Lord's lens, like being late
- 3:47to something or missing something.
- 3:50Things that don't go according to the plan that you had
- 3:53initially. A few months ago, actually, I
- 3:56missed a flight and I remember being so frustrated with myself.
- 4:01But it ended up turning into what I really believe was a
- 4:05divine appointment because I got to meet an airport worker who
- 4:10the Lord highlighted to me as I was walking out.
- 4:12I had already landed in Dallas and I felt like the Holy Spirit
- 4:16said, turn back around and go talk to that woman.
- 4:20And of course, I was scared. I didn't necessarily want to do
- 4:23it at first, but I turned around and I asked her, how are you?
- 4:28Can I pray for you? And she actually just started
- 4:32crying. And she had been going through
- 4:35something really hard physically and needed a prayer for healing.
- 4:39We ended up talking for a while and we actually still stay in
- 4:43touch to this day. We will send each other voice
- 4:46memos to pray over one another, encourage each other in the
- 4:49Lord. And it's just so cool to look
- 4:51back and think. What I initially viewed as a
- 4:56frustrating mistake God turned into something good.
- 5:00And He brought me a new sister in Christ who needed
- 5:03encouragement. Joy is not always the easiest
- 5:07response by any means, but it reflects a heart that truly
- 5:11understands and appreciates God's mercy, love, and kindness.
- 5:17So going into the second point, pray continually.
- 5:22A life of prayer comes from cultivating A consistent
- 5:26attitude of prayer. And think about it, if we're
- 5:29doing something continually, it usually means that we believe it
- 5:34actually works. So prayer should come with
- 5:36eagerness, expectancy, persistence, and with faith.
- 5:42It's not meant to just start and end your day.
- 5:44It's meant to flow all throughout, talking to God
- 5:48during normal everyday things like in your work, in classes,
- 5:54in school, in your workouts. Maybe you're just driving,
- 5:58running errands, constantly bringing Him into your
- 6:01awareness. You can ask the Lord to keep you
- 6:05mindful of His presence. A daily prayer for me is keep me
- 6:09at the keep you at the forefront of my thoughts.
- 6:12Lord, Ask him for his ideas. Ask him for his wisdom.
- 6:17Ask God to shape the way that you see things, because when you
- 6:21do that, I think something really beautiful can happen.
- 6:25A greater awareness of the Spirit leads to acknowledge
- 6:29dependence, which then leads to applied obedience.
- 6:34Thirdly, give thanks in all circumstances.
- 6:39Notice how Paul does not say for all circumstances, but in all
- 6:43circumstances. Obviously, evil does not come
- 6:47from God, but in all circumstances we can thank God
- 6:51because no matter what is going on around us, God is with us in
- 6:55it. There is always a reason to
- 6:58thank the Lord. We were literally created to
- 7:01praise Him. And when you look at these three
- 7:05things together, rejoicing, prayer, and gratitude, they all
- 7:10work hand in hand because the gratitude is what grounds us.
- 7:14Joy flows from that gratitude, and prayer strengthens both of
- 7:19those things. That's why I think that Paul
- 7:22says this is God's will for us because it's in these three
- 7:26things that deepen our faith and they strengthen our union with
- 7:30the Father. Then Paul moves into saying, do
- 7:34not quench the Spirit, AKA do not dismiss the ways that the
- 7:39Holy Spirit desires to move or the spiritual gifts that he
- 7:43gives you, because they're meant to build up the church, to
- 7:47strengthen both individual faith and collective faith.
- 7:51But we're also told to test everything because humans can
- 7:56absolutely be vessels that God uses.
- 7:59We are ambassadors of Christ as believers, but we are still
- 8:03human. We're still prone to making
- 8:06mistakes, and there's going to be times that we do not
- 8:09communicate things perfectly. Not every prophetic word someone
- 8:13shares with you might be for you specifically.
- 8:17So that's why Scripture says to test prophecies and to hold on
- 8:21to what is good. Evaluate everything through the
- 8:25truth of God's Word first and foremost.
- 8:28Wise counsel. Yes, it is biblical, it is so
- 8:31important, but it should never replace God's Word or your
- 8:35dependence on His Spirit to reveal the truth.
- 8:38We should go to the Holy Spirit and to the Bible 1st.
- 8:43And we should also not just pick and choose which parts of truth
- 8:47that we desire to follow, what's comfortable, or what we want to
- 8:52hear. Instead, we hold on to what is
- 8:54good, reject what is evil, reject sin, and we walk in the
- 8:59truth that is active. Paul then prays that God would
- 9:04sanctify us through and through. This is showing that
- 9:09sanctification. It's an ongoing process of God
- 9:12shaping us to become more like Jesus.
- 9:15It's not just going to happen overnight, but it will not be
- 9:18complete until the day of the Lord when we are fully glorified
- 9:22with Jesus in His return. When Paul mentions our spirit,
- 9:27soul, and body, it is reminding that God wants to be involved in
- 9:31every inch of our lives. It's not just the parts that we
- 9:35choose to give him. It's not just a portion.
- 9:38It is everything following Jesus.
- 9:41It will involve growth, stretching, and often times
- 9:45discomfort, but it's in those moments that are often where the
- 9:50deepest transformation happens. The Bible reminds us that God's
- 9:55power is made perfect in weakness.
- 9:58Second Corinthians 12/9 And there's comfort in knowing that
- 10:02the Spirit of the living Jesus who is seated on the throne in
- 10:06heaven right now, that his Spirit is with us in every
- 10:10challenge that we face. This letter, it ends with two
- 10:15amazing reminders about the character of God, that he is a
- 10:18God of peace and he is a God of faithfulness.
- 10:23And when we truly believe those things about him, it strengthens
- 10:27our ability to keep trusting him, to keep obeying, to keep
- 10:31walking in his perfect pleasing will.
- 10:35This letter to the Thessalonian Church, it's been so full of
- 10:39encouragement, and it's not just for us as individuals, but also
- 10:43for how we love and strengthen those around us.
- 10:47It equips us to live faithfully and to help others do the same.
- 10:52So I've loved going through it with y'all, and I'm going to go
- 10:55ahead and close out in prayer for today's episode.
- 10:59Dear Lord, thank you for the clarity in Your Word.
- 11:04Thank You that Your will for our lives is not something that is
- 11:07mysterious, but something that we can actually walk out daily
- 11:13to rejoice in You, to stay connected to You via prayer, and
- 11:18to cultivate grateful hearts in every season, in every
- 11:21circumstance. Would you help us grow an
- 11:24awareness of Your Spirit to walk in obedience to what You ask of
- 11:29us? Make us more like Jesus through
- 11:32and through. In the sanctification process.
- 11:36Shape us and every part of our lives to reflect you.
- 11:40Would you remind us daily that you are a God of peace.
- 11:45You are a God of faithfulness to every promise that you make.
- 11:49Your word is true. We trust you, God, with our
- 11:54lives, with our growth, and with what you are doing right now in
- 12:00our hearts. We pray this in Jesus name,
- 12:03Amen. OK guys, well that is what I
- 12:06have for you all today. I'm praying that this continues
- 12:09to encourage you as you start a new week and that the Lord meets
- 12:13you right where you are. Have a great rest of your Monday
- 12:15and I'll see y'all on the next pod.
