- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, my name is Justin Greenberg, and this is
- 0:02Speaker 1: Film Real and we're back again with my buddy Jonathan,
- 0:06Speaker 1: and now we are talking about the greatest action movies
- 0:10Speaker 1: of all time. So let's get into it. Let's get
- 0:13Speaker 1: to why we're here, Jonathan, and we're here to talk
- 0:15Speaker 1: about action movies because there's not a genre that I
- 0:18Speaker 1: like more than the action movie. And ever since I
- 0:22Speaker 1: was a little kid, action movies have been ingrained into
- 0:25Speaker 1: my livelihood. I've just always watched them. I've made my
- 0:29Speaker 1: own little movies with my action figures. I'm always outside
- 0:32Speaker 1: as a kid, you know, playing army, and you're just
- 0:35Speaker 1: always you know, whether you're watching TV shows, wrestling has action,
- 0:39Speaker 1: you're reading comic books, that's action. And the genre I
- 0:43Speaker 1: think is not nearly as good as it once was.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I think it hit its peak at some point and
- 0:48Speaker 1: has gone downhill since then. But let's get to some
- 0:51Speaker 1: of our favorite action movies of all time. Now, before
- 0:54Speaker 1: we get to our top five, let's go to some
- 0:56Speaker 1: honorable mentions. What are some movies that just missed out
- 0:59Speaker 1: on your top five? I got Speed, not Speed to
- 1:04Speaker 1: cruise Control. No, have you seen speed too?
- 1:07Speaker 2: I have with Jason Patrick Willem de Foe is the
- 1:10Speaker 2: bad guy.
- 1:11Speaker 1: That's not a good one.
- 1:13Speaker 2: No first one. Very good movie True Lies.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, big fan of that movie. That's like one
- 1:19Speaker 1: of Arnold's last good movies. Yeah, that might be his let.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I like Jingle All the Way, which is stupid.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Terminator three has some good moments, but True Lies eraser, Yeah,
- 1:30Speaker 1: that's pretty good. But you know, True Lies, No True
- 1:33Speaker 1: Lies is fantastic.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Actually fun facts. Stayed in the hotel in LA when
- 1:38Speaker 2: I was out there where they filmed Oh where he's
- 1:40Speaker 2: in the glass elevator with the horse. Yeah, it jumps
- 1:43Speaker 2: off the roof and the way the horse stops at
- 1:45Speaker 2: the last second and he goes flying over. Yeah, I
- 1:48Speaker 2: stayed there. I was like this looks familiar, and I
- 1:50Speaker 2: was like, oh wow. And this was back when I
- 1:51Speaker 2: was like sixteen, so it was probably right after they
- 1:55Speaker 2: filmed that school. Yeah, so that was fun. H The
- 2:00Speaker 2: Rock with Sean Connery, Connory, Nicholas Cage.
- 2:05Speaker 1: That's a solid one. Michael Bay who's not a very
- 2:09Speaker 1: good director, but he can make a good action movie
- 2:12Speaker 1: every now and then.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah we won't. We'll talk about the other ones later
- 2:16Speaker 2: that I know you don't like that.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I don't like him. I know which one you're talking about.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Hard to Kill. Ever seen it? Eighties movie?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Maybe? Probably he's on TV back in the day.
- 2:29Speaker 2: I mean he made like I think he made a
- 2:31Speaker 2: movie every year in the eighties and it was just like, okay,
- 2:33Speaker 2: we got it. But that one was my favorite. I
- 2:36Speaker 2: don't know why. Growing up, I watched that one a
- 2:37Speaker 2: lot and I actually was a big fan of that one.
- 2:40Speaker 1: So's like apparently the biggest s in all of Hollywood. Yeah, No,
- 2:43Speaker 1: one likes him. He gets into the fights. He's just
- 2:46Speaker 1: very unliked. He was one of the few people banned
- 2:49Speaker 1: from Saturday Night Live really just because he was a
- 2:51Speaker 1: dick to everyone on the set. So h he's He's
- 2:55Speaker 1: a funny character though, so shout out to Steven Saga.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Was one of those unsung act heroes that doesn't really
- 3:01Speaker 1: get talked about, like the Van Dams and the you know,
- 3:03Speaker 1: Stalloons and whatnot. Any more honorable mentions that's stick out
- 3:06Speaker 1: for you.
- 3:06Speaker 2: I mean I could list one hundred more, but let's
- 3:09Speaker 2: see what you got I got.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with the Jackie Chan movie Rumble in
- 3:12Speaker 1: the Bronx Okay, it's it's you know, dubbed over, but
- 3:16Speaker 1: it's just fast paced action sequences. I don't think anybody
- 3:20Speaker 1: could choreograph a fight sequence quite like Jackie Chan. And
- 3:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna get into quickly. Actually, some of the aspects
- 3:27Speaker 1: of modern movies that I don't like when it comes
- 3:30Speaker 1: to action movies is you really can't tell what the
- 3:32Speaker 1: hell is going on with a lot of these fight
- 3:34Speaker 1: sequences because there's a lot of edits, there's a lot
- 3:37Speaker 1: of zooming in and moving the camera, and you can't
- 3:39Speaker 1: tell what's going on, mostly because one the person that's
- 3:42Speaker 1: doing the stunts isn't actually doing the stunts, and they're
- 3:44Speaker 1: trying to hide different things. And you know, look at
- 3:47Speaker 1: a Jackie Chan movie, they'll be like just a still camera,
- 3:51Speaker 1: a faraway shot, and you could see everything he's doing.
- 3:53Speaker 1: He's setting up all this stuff. I mean, this would
- 3:55Speaker 1: take him weeks to just right out how to do this,
- 3:59Speaker 1: you know, this giant five minute fight sequence. And he
- 4:02Speaker 1: put his body on the line. You've seen all the
- 4:05Speaker 1: outtakes of him breaking ribs, spine injuries, brain injuries, scarring
- 4:09Speaker 1: on his hands. I mean, this guy has been through
- 4:11Speaker 1: it all to put on some of the in my opinion,
- 4:14Speaker 1: the greatest fight choreography of all time. I know a
- 4:17Speaker 1: lot of people love Bruce Lay, and I like Bruce Lee,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and I respect Bruce Lee. He's the godfather. He's the
- 4:21Speaker 1: guy that did it all before anybody, and there would
- 4:23Speaker 1: be no Jackie Chan without Bruce Lay. But Jackie Chan
- 4:26Speaker 1: was able to take what Bruce Lee did and elevated
- 4:29Speaker 1: it to a much higher degree. It's like with sports.
- 4:32Speaker 1: You know, these guys from the sixties, I respect them,
- 4:34Speaker 1: but you know, give me Michael Jordan over, you know,
- 4:36Speaker 1: Elgin Baylor, give me you know what a modern athlete
- 4:39Speaker 1: could do. Give me what Jackie Chan did. And he
- 4:41Speaker 1: was also able to implement, implement, implement, implement, implement. That's
- 4:47Speaker 1: why you're here, Jonathan comedy, which is something that Bruce
- 4:50Speaker 1: Lee never really did with his movies. So and also
- 4:53Speaker 1: the filmography. Bruce Lee only made a handful of movies.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Jackie Chan's been making movies for fifty years. So if
- 4:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna pick one of his movies, it is Rumble
- 5:01Speaker 1: in the Bronx. This one, I feel like it might
- 5:03Speaker 1: be actually in your movies, and that would be a
- 5:05Speaker 1: lethal weapon. Did you have any of the lethal Weapon.
- 5:08Speaker 2: I do, I do I have, So for me, it's
- 5:10Speaker 2: between lethal Weapon one and four.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Yes, four is a weird one.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Those are my two favorites. So I think a big
- 5:17Speaker 2: part of movies that I like that are technically in
- 5:20Speaker 2: the action genre have a big element of comedy in
- 5:24Speaker 2: them as well, because I think you need to break
- 5:26Speaker 2: it up. You can't just have fight fight, fight, fight, fight, fight,
- 5:29Speaker 2: fight or car Chase, Car Chase, Car Chase, Car Chase.
- 5:32Speaker 1: All five of my top five all have moments that are.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Okay, I think you're gon be like, no, all of
- 5:37Speaker 2: mine are just fights and just shooting and just car Chase.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Well, in fact, I think number one is one of
- 5:42Speaker 1: the funniest movies of all time.
- 5:43Speaker 2: It's great. But then you get four. You got you
- 5:46Speaker 2: got Chris rock in there. I mean, Joe Peshi guys
- 5:50Speaker 2: is absolute gold.
- 5:52Speaker 1: I'd still go with the first one though, you got
- 5:53Speaker 1: Gary Busey, mister Joshua, He's fantastic. And then they're all good.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I mean they're all good. The whole series is great.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Did you have one actually in your top five?
- 6:01Speaker 2: So my fifth was I couldn't pick between one and four. Yeah,
- 6:05Speaker 2: but that was number five in.
- 6:06Speaker 1: My list yet and number one doesn't get talked about
- 6:08Speaker 1: as a Christmas movie because Diehard always gets talked about
- 6:10Speaker 1: as a Christmas Leave the Weapons as much of a Christmas exactly,
- 6:14Speaker 1: and the girl falling off to her death fantastic movie.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And Mel Gibson, I know he's a jackass. Yeah, he
- 6:20Speaker 1: is so good in that movie. He's insane. I don't
- 6:24Speaker 1: know if he's acting.
- 6:24Speaker 2: He plays rigs yeah perfectly. Yeah. And then Danny Glover
- 6:28Speaker 2: is funny. Yah, he's on his way out. Then as
- 6:32Speaker 2: you get to the third and fourth you got Rene
- 6:33Speaker 2: Russo in there too. She's good.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And they've wanted to make a fifth one too late.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Richard Donner, the director, he passed away. I've heard rumors
- 6:42Speaker 1: that Richard Donner basically said the only person that could
- 6:45Speaker 1: direct this would be Mel Gibson. But like Danny Glover's
- 6:48Speaker 1: like eighty years old, he's been too old for this
- 6:51Speaker 1: ship for forty years.
- 6:52Speaker 2: He was too old in the first one. Yeah, just no,
- 6:54Speaker 2: just stop four were great. Just we don't need another sequel.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It made a TV that I actually liked.
- 7:02Speaker 1: It was that like Sean William Scott.
- 7:03Speaker 2: No, it was some guy I'd never seen before, but
- 7:07Speaker 2: then saw him after. He actually played a very good
- 7:09Speaker 2: Rigs as well.
- 7:10Speaker 1: So they are playing the same characters.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah, trying to think of what his name was to
- 7:14Speaker 2: search them and Chandler, I'll find it well.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Speaking of mel Gibson, I got the Mad Max films
- 7:21Speaker 1: as honorable mentions. I love The Road Warrior, which is
- 7:25Speaker 1: the second one, and then without mel Gibson though, but
- 7:28Speaker 1: the Mad Max Furiosa is unbelievable. I don't know if
- 7:32Speaker 1: we've talked about that movie before. We might have. I
- 7:34Speaker 1: mentioned I saw that one in theaters actually with you
- 7:37Speaker 1: and just how in amazement I was about the stunt work.
- 7:40Speaker 1: And it's another thing with the modern action movie that
- 7:43Speaker 1: we rarely get is a lot of practical effects because
- 7:46Speaker 1: it's safer and it's more. It's inexpensive to create something
- 7:51Speaker 1: digitally instead of choreographing nine, you know, eighteen wheelers doing
- 7:55Speaker 1: this thing. It's dangerous. People die on these film sets,
- 7:59Speaker 1: people get very injured, and it's it's just pricey. So
- 8:03Speaker 1: this movie Mad Max Furiosa, did ninety nine percent of
- 8:07Speaker 1: the stuff in camera. There was very little, you know,
- 8:10Speaker 1: added element of CGI to that movie. So one of
- 8:13Speaker 1: the last great action movies for sure. So this is
- 8:16Speaker 1: future Justin who's editing this podcast, And I realized I
- 8:19Speaker 1: was talking about Mad Max Furioso when I meant to say,
- 8:22Speaker 1: Mad Max Fury Road is the action movie that I
- 8:26Speaker 1: really love. Now. Furiosa that came out in twenty twenty
- 8:28Speaker 1: four was solid, but Mad Max Fury Road from twenty
- 8:31Speaker 1: fifteen is the movie I'm talking about that I absolutely adore.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Now let's go back to Justin Take it Away. Justin
- 8:39Speaker 1: Demolition Man I have as an honorable mention. And speaking
- 8:42Speaker 1: of stallone, the Rambo series is so much fun. I
- 8:46Speaker 1: love First Blood. It's more of a thought provoking type
- 8:49Speaker 1: of movie. You know, a guy who's the Vietnam veteran
- 8:51Speaker 1: and he has a breakdown, and it gets more cartoony
- 8:54Speaker 1: as they go on, sort of like the Rocky movies,
- 8:56Speaker 1: which become tongue in cheek and more of like a
- 9:00Speaker 1: the generic action movie. The first one's really good, but
- 9:02Speaker 1: the other ones are still really fun. Even the fourth one,
- 9:05Speaker 1: it's just called Rambo, has some of the best deaths
- 9:08Speaker 1: in any movie. And I go two more quick ones.
- 9:12Speaker 1: John Wick loved the John Wick series. Really good fight choreography,
- 9:16Speaker 1: they drag a little bit. I think they've made a
- 9:18Speaker 1: little too many of them. They're making a spinoff now,
- 9:21Speaker 1: they had a spin off TV show. I think they're
- 9:23Speaker 1: making a fifth one as well. And the movies are
- 9:25Speaker 1: a little bit too long. And then one final one
- 9:29Speaker 1: Indiana Jones. Love the Indiana Jones movies. But that could
- 9:32Speaker 1: get into another topic. Is that an adventure movie? Is
- 9:35Speaker 1: that an action movie?
- 9:37Speaker 3: Is that?
- 9:37Speaker 1: You know? Because what exactly defines an action movie? Which
- 9:41Speaker 1: we will get to Actually, you know, why don't we
- 9:43Speaker 1: move on to that because we'll get to our top
- 9:45Speaker 1: five greatest ones in a little bit.
- 9:48Speaker 2: By the way, it was Clean Crawford that played Riggs
- 9:51Speaker 2: in the TV show and Damon Waym's played too.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I knew there was somebody famous in it. Is there
- 9:57Speaker 1: any movie that you can think of that's under rated,
- 10:00Speaker 1: an action movie that people really don't talk about too much,
- 10:04Speaker 1: that doesn't get the love that it deserves.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Well, to go back to your point of I think
- 10:09Speaker 2: most of my movies are from the nineties or eighties.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Yeah, all mine like eighties with one.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Actual stunts and like you said, you watch Jackie Chan,
- 10:20Speaker 2: not even the fight scenes, but just the running up
- 10:22Speaker 2: a wall, to hop over a thing, to run a
- 10:24Speaker 2: guy down, and then, like you said, at the end
- 10:26Speaker 2: of the movie, they show him messing it up like
- 10:28Speaker 2: eight times, hurting his ankle, doing stuff with steering wheels, handcuffs, guns.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I mean the guys the ladder, Like, yeah, the shit
- 10:35Speaker 1: he could do with a ladder, just a broom, It'll
- 10:37Speaker 1: be like hit you a million times. You know. Driving here,
- 10:40Speaker 1: there's a building that has this like giant slope. It
- 10:43Speaker 1: looks like a slide. I'm like Jackie Chan with a
- 10:45Speaker 1: fucking field day. With that, he'd be running down and
- 10:47Speaker 1: jumping off of it. Yeah, not even the fight choreography,
- 10:50Speaker 1: just the actual stunt work of going from buses and
- 10:53Speaker 1: jumping and it's just it's insane. So shout out to
- 10:57Speaker 1: Jackie Chan. I'm gonna pick an underrated movie. It was
- 11:00Speaker 1: called dread and it made Judge dread back for the day,
- 11:03Speaker 1: say Judge dread, Well, it's it's the same character. But
- 11:06Speaker 1: they made one in twenty twelve. I believe. It stars
- 11:09Speaker 1: Carl Urban, who's a really good actor. He's in The Boys,
- 11:12Speaker 1: he's in the Lord of the Rings movies. It just
- 11:15Speaker 1: doesn't get talked about, but it's super gory, it's got
- 11:17Speaker 1: really great special effects. It's got an interesting story where
- 11:21Speaker 1: a whole complex is locked down and he's sort of
- 11:24Speaker 1: it's sort of like a video game. He's on the
- 11:25Speaker 1: bottom floor. He has to get to the top floor
- 11:27Speaker 1: of this complex, and there's you know, crazy characters and
- 11:30Speaker 1: drug use and just it's a movie that nobody remembers
- 11:34Speaker 1: it was a movie.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I think I've seen that.
- 11:35Speaker 1: It's super super good, and uh, it's unfortunately just got
- 11:39Speaker 1: thrown away and nobody talks about it, and they think
- 11:42Speaker 1: of the Sloan Judge Dread, which I actually don't mind
- 11:44Speaker 1: that movie, but unfortunately the Carl Urban one just doesn't
- 11:48Speaker 1: get the love that it deserves. So it's one of.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Those got seven point one out of ten on IMD.
- 11:52Speaker 1: But that ain't Bed. That ain't Bed at all. Is
- 11:54Speaker 1: there an underrated one that you could think of?
- 11:57Speaker 2: Nothing that comes to mind?
- 11:58Speaker 1: Well, I'm gonna go with an ovary And this is
- 12:01Speaker 1: just a genre, and it's the superhero genre. And I
- 12:05Speaker 1: love a good superhero movie. I don't think you like
- 12:07Speaker 1: superhero movies, right, you don't like them? Pretty much?
- 12:09Speaker 2: Like what?
- 12:10Speaker 1: Just like I guess you like Batman? I mean, who
- 12:13Speaker 1: doesn't like Batman. Yeah, you like The Dark Knight, Yeah,
- 12:16Speaker 1: Batman with Keaton? What about you know, like these Avengers
- 12:20Speaker 1: movies you watching?
- 12:22Speaker 2: Oh, I mean I don't. I don't get into all
- 12:23Speaker 2: the like I'm not going to see the new one,
- 12:26Speaker 2: like I watched the main ones. Like I'm not watching
- 12:28Speaker 2: all the spin offs for the and that's his series
- 12:31Speaker 2: and stuff like that.
- 12:32Speaker 1: There's too much. They've oversaturated the market. When we were kids,
- 12:35Speaker 1: if there was a superhero movie out and you go,
- 12:37Speaker 1: oh my god, they're making a super they're making a
- 12:40Speaker 1: superhero movie, it would happen once every three or four years.
- 12:43Speaker 1: And I equate this the food where we started off
- 12:46Speaker 1: our show. If you get ice cream every single day,
- 12:49Speaker 1: it loses that specialty of eating ice cream. And that
- 12:51Speaker 1: is what the superhero genre has become. People are just
- 12:54Speaker 1: engorging and overeating and getting fat and diabetes off of
- 12:58Speaker 1: superhero movies, and it loses that specialty of oh my god,
- 13:02Speaker 1: we're gonna have ice cream because you know, you graduated
- 13:05Speaker 1: from school. We're gonna get ice cream because you had
- 13:07Speaker 1: a good report card. And now we just have too
- 13:10Speaker 1: much ice cream. We have too much superhero movies, and
- 13:12Speaker 1: it loses that luster, and honestly, they've also just gone
- 13:15Speaker 1: downhill since Robert Downey Junior and Chris Evans stopped being
- 13:20Speaker 1: Ironman and Captain America. The movies have not been good.
- 13:23Speaker 1: There's been a few good ones, but they haven't been good.
- 13:26Speaker 2: They're gonna keep making them because they keep making what
- 13:29Speaker 2: two three hundred million dollars on every movie that they make,
- 13:32Speaker 2: or are they starting to now maybe fall off.
- 13:34Speaker 1: They are starting to fall off a little bit. They are.
- 13:37Speaker 1: You know, the Captain Marvel movie that just came out.
- 13:39Speaker 1: The Marvels did not do too well as far as
- 13:42Speaker 1: DC goes. The Flash was a gigantic bomb. Black Adam
- 13:46Speaker 1: was a gigantic bomb. I think they're gonna stop making
- 13:50Speaker 1: movies that they know aren't going to make money, and
- 13:52Speaker 1: they're just gonna make the big ones that everyone's going
- 13:56Speaker 1: to see. I don't think we're gonna get a fourth
- 13:57Speaker 1: ant Man movie. I think they're gonna stick with, you know,
- 14:00Speaker 1: iron Man and Captain America type level of characters. You know,
- 14:02Speaker 1: Spider Man.
- 14:04Speaker 2: But yeah, coming out with a new Superman. Right they
- 14:06Speaker 2: are summer.
- 14:07Speaker 1: So here's the deal. James Gunn, who was fired he
- 14:11Speaker 1: worked for Disney. He made the Guardians of the Galaxy movies,
- 14:13Speaker 1: which I think are fantastic, and he got fired because
- 14:17Speaker 1: a tweet came out. He tweeted something fifteen years ago.
- 14:21Speaker 1: He got canceled, and this is one of the rarities
- 14:25Speaker 1: where people actually stood up for somebody that got canceled.
- 14:28Speaker 1: So the entire cast basically said, we are not making
- 14:31Speaker 1: Guardians of the Galaxy three without James Gunn.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Oh wow.
- 14:34Speaker 1: So they stood their ground and Disney said, okay, we're
- 14:39Speaker 1: gonna hire you back. So it goes to show you
- 14:41Speaker 1: if you stand up for your body. Yeah, you know,
- 14:43Speaker 1: if you have the star power of the Guardians casting,
- 14:46Speaker 1: we're not you can't recast all of us. You could
- 14:48Speaker 1: recast one of us, you know, groot, you could just
- 14:50Speaker 1: hire anybody, but you can't recast everyone. So they all
- 14:53Speaker 1: stood up for their guy, James Gunn, and they got
- 14:57Speaker 1: him back. But in the meantime, DC their movies have
- 15:01Speaker 1: been shit. Yeah, they've all underperformed and they've been critically
- 15:06Speaker 1: just terrible. So DC was like, we're gonna hire James Gunn.
- 15:10Speaker 1: So in the meantime, before he got rehired by Disney,
- 15:14Speaker 1: d C decided to make him the head of DC
- 15:17Speaker 1: you know, film division, So now he's going to be
- 15:20Speaker 1: heading that. He did come back, made that Guardians three,
- 15:23Speaker 1: then said you know, screw you guys, I'm going back
- 15:24Speaker 1: to DC and he's gonna be directing that Superman movie
- 15:28Speaker 1: and he's gonna be running the d C Comics Film
- 15:31Speaker 1: Division from now on. So I have faith in him.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I'm hoping it's good. Superman really hasn't had a good
- 15:36Speaker 1: movie in forty years or so, so.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Now is this one about Superman? Because the trailer showed
- 15:42Speaker 2: him plummeting to Earth into the snow and then super
- 15:45Speaker 2: Dog coming to like grab on.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Crypto super Dog. Yeah, yeah, no, it's about Superman. But
- 15:50Speaker 1: I didn't think the trailer was anything good. I'll be
- 15:52Speaker 1: honest with you. I thought it's weird decision to show
- 15:55Speaker 1: Superman so weak, make him heroic, make him iconic. But
- 16:00Speaker 1: trailers are trailers, so I'm not gonna bet everything just
- 16:03Speaker 1: based on the trailer. I do have faith in James Gunn.
- 16:05Speaker 1: I think he's delivered with his superhero franchises before. But
- 16:09Speaker 1: we'll see. But I am putting as an overrated. Just
- 16:12Speaker 1: whole thing is the superhero genre because every now and
- 16:16Speaker 1: then you get a masterpiece like some of those Avengers movies.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Infinity War and the Endgame was just a masterpiece. I mean,
- 16:23Speaker 1: the atmosphere in the theater was so much fun. It's
- 16:26Speaker 1: one of those moments you'll never be able to replicate it.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Just it was you know, ten years of the making
- 16:31Speaker 1: and all these characters that you've invested time in, and
- 16:34Speaker 1: you actually care about the characters. That's a big issue
- 16:36Speaker 1: with a lot of these other movies. Although some of
- 16:39Speaker 1: the fight sequences can be extravagant, that you don't care
- 16:43Speaker 1: for the characters, and that's really important. I know you're
- 16:46Speaker 1: not a Star Wars guy, but you know Star Wars
- 16:48Speaker 1: episode one, episode two, episode three, they have these extravagant
- 16:52Speaker 1: fight sequences and the guys are doing flips and there's
- 16:54Speaker 1: you know, all these crazy chworlds and there's lavish special effects,
- 16:58Speaker 1: but you don't care for the characters. So, you know,
- 17:00Speaker 1: as cool as it is to look at, there's no
- 17:02Speaker 1: investment with the characters. And I equate that with wrestling.
- 17:05Speaker 1: A lot of times you watch wrestlers that are doing
- 17:07Speaker 1: these crazy flips and all these cool moves and whatnot.
- 17:10Speaker 1: But if you're not invested in the actual characters behind him.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Who cares? They're just doing cool shit for the sake
- 17:16Speaker 1: of doing cool shit. So it's a big problem with
- 17:18Speaker 1: the action movies. You have to actually care and root
- 17:20Speaker 1: for the characters to go along with the special effects
- 17:24Speaker 1: and with the action that makes it a masterpiece. That's
- 17:26Speaker 1: why my top five all have characters that I'm rooting for.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I don't want these guys to end up dying. So
- 17:32Speaker 1: why don't we get to some other things before we
- 17:34Speaker 1: get to our top five favorite action movies of all time?
- 17:38Speaker 1: Let's just quickly go over the mount rushmore of action stars.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Who is I think we could come up with this together.
- 17:44Speaker 1: The top four not necessarily our favorite, but like when
- 17:48Speaker 1: you think of action stars, these are action stars like
- 17:50Speaker 1: Arnold Schwarzenegger is He's number one, right.
- 17:53Speaker 2: He was number one on my list.
- 17:54Speaker 1: He has to be there. I think if you think
- 17:56Speaker 1: of Arnold, do you think of Stallonge. So that's one
- 17:59Speaker 1: and two.
- 18:00Speaker 2: I think those are the locks. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Now
- 18:03Speaker 2: you're going to get into.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Now this is where things get difficult, because you know,
- 18:07Speaker 1: do we put somebody like a Bruce Willis there? He's
- 18:10Speaker 1: been in quite a few of them. I still stand
- 18:13Speaker 1: by Jackie Chan. I would really want Jackie Chan there
- 18:17Speaker 1: just because of the the time that he's been there,
- 18:21Speaker 1: he's been able to over all. Three of those guys
- 18:24Speaker 1: all have you know, language issues in the sense like
- 18:27Speaker 1: you know, Arnold coming from a different country, Jackie Chan
- 18:30Speaker 1: coming from another country, Stallone coming from a different planet.
- 18:34Speaker 1: You know, they all are so unique and just.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Uh, you could even throw Dam in there.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Yeah, Van Dam's definitely in the running as far as
- 18:41Speaker 1: in Mount Rushmore, but not from this country. And yeah,
- 18:44Speaker 1: it's interesting. I guess action movies you could. You don't
- 18:47Speaker 1: really need to, you know, it translates to different countries
- 18:50Speaker 1: and all. You don't necessarily the dialogue is important. But
- 18:53Speaker 1: there's something about these characters. They're larger than life. They're
- 18:56Speaker 1: so charismatic that even if the movies were on mute,
- 18:59Speaker 1: it would still be interesting to just look at them
- 19:01Speaker 1: because they're they're so gigantic and larger than life. So
- 19:04Speaker 1: we definitely have our two one too. I would have
- 19:07Speaker 1: no issue it being Bruce Willison, Jackie Chan, three and
- 19:11Speaker 1: four before we lock that is there anyone that stands
- 19:14Speaker 1: like I love Kurt Russell.
- 19:16Speaker 2: So I had a couple of people written down. Who
- 19:18Speaker 2: do you got so because I'm just trying to think
- 19:20Speaker 2: of all the action movies and like all the series
- 19:23Speaker 2: that that I have written down, Mel Gibson with Mel
- 19:26Speaker 2: Gibson I have written down. I have Mark Wahlberg written down.
- 19:30Speaker 2: I mean, now you're getting newer. I'm a big Wahlburg fan.
- 19:33Speaker 2: I mean I really like most of the movie season.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Tom Cruise, I mean he's been in a ton of
- 19:40Speaker 2: action movies.
- 19:41Speaker 1: And I wish he'd stopped. I love Tom Cruise. He's
- 19:44Speaker 1: probably my favorite actor of all time. He's in the
- 19:47Speaker 1: top three. But he used to make like, you know,
- 19:50Speaker 1: dramas and he's really good like Rainman and Jerry Maguire
- 19:53Speaker 1: and Born on the Fourth of July.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Like really good movies Top Gun.
- 19:58Speaker 1: But now he's just now he's just all doing action
- 20:00Speaker 1: movies because I don't know, there's gotta be some midlife
- 20:04Speaker 1: crisis that he's going through where he has.
- 20:06Speaker 2: To showing that he could still do Yeah.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I'm young. I mean I could do these stunts myself.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I have no issue Cruise because he's still doing it.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:15Speaker 1: So I think we have our three in Stone. It's
- 20:18Speaker 1: the Loane Arnold Cruz. Anybody else because Mel Gibson.
- 20:22Speaker 2: I have Gibson down, I have Nicholas Cage down, which
- 20:25Speaker 2: I don't consider him in action definitely not on the
- 20:29Speaker 2: Mount Rushmore. But Lasse He's in a lot of my
- 20:33Speaker 2: favorite movies, a couple that are in my top five. So,
- 20:36Speaker 2: I mean, we just talked about Steven Sagal. He was
- 20:38Speaker 2: in four hundred action movies in the eighties and nineties.
- 20:43Speaker 2: But yeah, like you said, so if you're looking at
- 20:44Speaker 2: Mount Rushmore, you obviously got Arnold, you got the one.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Again, it's not our favorite. He's the ones that gotta impact. Listen.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Actually, we gotta have Bruce Willison there.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I was gonna say another Bruce, Bruce Lae. I'm not
- 20:56Speaker 1: saying my favorite, no, just because he's like the Founding five.
- 21:00Speaker 1: When I think of Mount Rushmore, it's like the Founding Fathers,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and he pretty much founded the martial arts film. I'm
- 21:06Speaker 1: putting Bruce lay Yeah. I think that even though, like
- 21:08Speaker 1: I said, I love Jackie Chan a million times more,
- 21:10Speaker 1: there is no Jackie Chan without Bruce Laye. So I
- 21:13Speaker 1: think that we got three Arnold Stallone and Bruce Laye.
- 21:18Speaker 1: We need the fourth one. Bruce willis Bruce over Tom Cruise.
- 21:23Speaker 2: That's tough. I mean, you think of action movies, die
- 21:27Speaker 2: has to jump right into your head right Well.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Spoiler alert, there's no Tom Cruise movie in my top five.
- 21:32Speaker 1: There is a Bruce Willis movie in my top five.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Me too, Let's go with Bruce. He's he's down and
- 21:37Speaker 1: out right now. Maybe this will help him out.
- 21:40Speaker 2: All right.
- 21:40Speaker 1: So that's our four. We got Arnold Stallone, Bruce Lae
- 21:44Speaker 1: and Bruce Willis.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Two bruces.
- 21:47Speaker 1: All right, that's a pretty solid four before we get
- 21:50Speaker 1: to the top five, which we will get to in
- 21:52Speaker 1: just a moment. If we were to create a perfect
- 21:55Speaker 1: action movie, what would we have to have in this?
- 21:58Speaker 1: Like so we went over, we have to have special
- 22:01Speaker 1: effects that are practical, meaning we have to have real
- 22:04Speaker 1: stunt men. We have to have real explosions. I was
- 22:07Speaker 1: telling you about squibs, which are little mini explosions with
- 22:11Speaker 1: blood packets in them that when you know, back in
- 22:13Speaker 1: the day, instead of CGI, they would actually have these
- 22:16Speaker 1: minor explosions tape to people's bodies. I need squibs. I
- 22:20Speaker 1: need I need comedy though as well. You need you
- 22:22Speaker 1: need a comedic element. What would be the basic plot?
- 22:26Speaker 1: Gotta be something generic like, you know, a woman's kidnapped
- 22:29Speaker 1: and a guy needs to help her, like the damsel
- 22:31Speaker 1: in the Stress. There.
- 22:32Speaker 2: So here's my thing with action movies too, where so
- 22:35Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with overrated. So I'm gonna start. I'm
- 22:38Speaker 2: gonna do the whole Fast and Furious series, right, Yeah,
- 22:42Speaker 2: I actually really like the first one. Okay, I like
- 22:45Speaker 2: the story, I like the action, the car scenes. Good.
- 22:49Speaker 2: You get to the second one, all right, we get
- 22:51Speaker 2: a little you gotta do a little more. Right, it's
- 22:52Speaker 2: a sequel, you gotta do. You can't do the same
- 22:55Speaker 2: car scenes whatever. You can't have Once you get into
- 22:59Speaker 2: seven eight, you got you got cars getting dropped out
- 23:02Speaker 2: of airplanes, landing on a mountain. And that one was
- 23:06Speaker 2: the worst. They literally shot a car into space and
- 23:09Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, now we've jumped to shark. We're gone. Okay,
- 23:13Speaker 2: So I need I need car chases, I need gunfights.
- 23:18Speaker 2: And that's the other thing too. You can't have a guy.
- 23:20Speaker 2: It's hard. It's an action movie. You know the guy's
- 23:23Speaker 2: gonna live, right, But you can't have one guy in
- 23:25Speaker 2: a shootout with thirty five people and you know he
- 23:28Speaker 2: never gets hit. Meanwhile, he's sniping everybody out. It gets
- 23:31Speaker 2: hard to believe, which again we know it's not real.
- 23:36Speaker 2: So that's my thing. You can't get too crazy because
- 23:39Speaker 2: then you just lose it.
- 23:40Speaker 1: See. I might differentiate with you here because I like
- 23:44Speaker 1: that aspect of a movie like Commando, which is one
- 23:47Speaker 1: of my favorite Arnold movies. And he's why in the
- 23:50Speaker 1: wide open there's four hundred henchmen and he's just running
- 23:53Speaker 1: with the machine gun doesn't get hit once. I don't know,
- 23:56Speaker 1: it depends on what type of movie are we making.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Are we making some thing that is realistic and grounded
- 24:02Speaker 1: in reality, or do we want something that's harkened back
- 24:05Speaker 1: to the eighties corniness of you know, Commandos and movies
- 24:10Speaker 1: like that. So for me, I think maybe we could
- 24:13Speaker 1: find something in the middle, something like maybe like a
- 24:17Speaker 1: Total Recall, which has the corniness and the cheesy one liners,
- 24:21Speaker 1: but you know, the gunfights aren't so over the top
- 24:24Speaker 1: where you don't think they could actually happen.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Like John Wick for a good example, Right, He's awesome. Yeah,
- 24:29Speaker 2: like just some of the stuff he does is great.
- 24:31Speaker 1: But it's choreographed in the sense that it could happen. Yeah,
- 24:35Speaker 1: at times, obviously it gets fabricated.
- 24:36Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, like you said with the one you
- 24:38Speaker 2: just mentioned, you're not just a guy in the wide
- 24:40Speaker 2: open with four hundred people shooting out and they all
- 24:41Speaker 2: miss and you're just picking people off.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, he's getting his ass kicked in these movies,
- 24:45Speaker 1: John Wick. Yeah, exactly, a finger and shit like.
- 24:48Speaker 2: Well, Mel Gibson and weapons, same thing. You know, he's
- 24:51Speaker 2: not indestructible.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Now, I speaking of lethal weapon. I do love the
- 24:57Speaker 1: buddy aspect of these movies. I think, you know, I'm
- 25:00Speaker 1: looking at these movies. They have a partner, partner, somebody
- 25:03Speaker 1: helping them out. This is a group of people, a
- 25:05Speaker 1: group of people. So I don't want a solo mission.
- 25:08Speaker 1: I want somebody that's going.
- 25:09Speaker 2: To be all the minor two people.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Yeah, so I think that's something we need. So we
- 25:14Speaker 1: need we need a smoking hot girl like she needs
- 25:18Speaker 1: to be taken away by some evil foreign guy. Can't
- 25:22Speaker 1: be like I wanted it, just like an evil Russian guy.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Again, So we're taking Yeah, okay.
- 25:27Speaker 1: Yes, but but I guess Gloria because believe it, take it.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Takeing a PG thirteen movie. Yeah, there's not a lot
- 25:34Speaker 1: of there's nothing.
- 25:34Speaker 2: There's not a lot of murder in it.
- 25:36Speaker 1: So we need we need the blood, we need the violence.
- 25:38Speaker 1: We need more of the funniness. And we can't have
- 25:41Speaker 1: seventy year old Liam Neeson. We need somebody that is,
- 25:44Speaker 1: you know, fit and young and.
- 25:46Speaker 2: And they got really good looking.
- 25:47Speaker 1: They can't be too good looking where you like fuck
- 25:50Speaker 1: that guy. That's why John McLean is so good because
- 25:55Speaker 1: it's like he has the thinning hair. He doesn't really
- 25:56Speaker 1: have muscles.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Alcohol. It's a dude, yeah, wife beater.
- 26:00Speaker 1: I think we need like an average looking dude. Girlfriend
- 26:04Speaker 1: gets taken by a foreign guy. There's comedy. He meets
- 26:08Speaker 1: up with somebody that they don't get along with at first.
- 26:10Speaker 1: There's a sacrifice that gets made. Maybe another third character
- 26:15Speaker 1: that's sort of a really you know, a comedic value guy.
- 26:19Speaker 1: There needs to be an animal, which we're taken you
- 26:22Speaker 1: know also from Leith the weapon, Like, there needs to
- 26:24Speaker 1: be a dog, but I don't want the dog can't die?
- 26:27Speaker 2: Well, no, because then you have four John Wicks because
- 26:29Speaker 2: they killed his dog.
- 26:30Speaker 1: But I think you can pull out the heartstrings and
- 26:32Speaker 1: have something happen to the dog the girl. The dog
- 26:36Speaker 1: gets kidnapped, Yeah, the dog, no girl.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Well this is Wick now right, I mean not kidnapped,
- 26:42Speaker 2: but the.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Dog gets held hostage. That's what the whole story is.
- 26:47Speaker 1: It's you have to have funny one lines that involve
- 26:51Speaker 1: the dog, like Life's a Bitch, shows Betsy and that's
- 26:55Speaker 1: like the dog's name, and then rips the guy's throat out.
- 26:58Speaker 2: And then gets an eating dogs treats while he's guy.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Of course. So, Hollywood, if you are listening, we sort
- 27:04Speaker 1: of set out you know, we didn't narrow it fully down,
- 27:07Speaker 1: but we have a template that needs to be brought
- 27:10Speaker 1: to the big screen.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Yeah, we named fifty action movies, fifty together.
- 27:15Speaker 1: One movie. That's all you have to do. Yeah, well,
- 27:17Speaker 1: let's get to our top five greatest action movies of
- 27:21Speaker 1: all time. And I'm gonna start this off by saying
- 27:23Speaker 1: the number one greatest movie of all time it's not
- 27:25Speaker 1: just an action movie, is Transformers, the movie from nineteen
- 27:28Speaker 1: eighty six, and thereby four. It's disqualified from any single
- 27:31Speaker 1: list that we ever do because this is the greatest
- 27:33Speaker 1: movie ever. So I'm gonna start off with my number
- 27:35Speaker 1: five and this is a James Cameron movie, and I
- 27:38Speaker 1: have two James Cameron movies here, and we're gonna start
- 27:42Speaker 1: off with nineteen eighty six is Aliens, and I love
- 27:45Speaker 1: Alien from nineteen seventy nine, but Aliens is everything that
- 27:51Speaker 1: Alien did and it amped it up to another level.
- 27:53Speaker 1: It's got that awesome group of individuals joining together to
- 27:57Speaker 1: take on this amazing creature. The Alien Queen is one
- 28:03Speaker 1: of my favorite creatures in all of film. It's such
- 28:06Speaker 1: a unique looking character and it's all done practically. You
- 28:10Speaker 1: have Sigourney Weaver as a badass chick and it's not
- 28:14Speaker 1: this forced look at us, we're women, We're in powerk.
- 28:16Speaker 1: She just happens to be a woman. Yeah, and she's badass,
- 28:19Speaker 1: and she has that great line stay away from her,
- 28:23Speaker 1: you bitch. I guess that's the line that I stole
- 28:24Speaker 1: from for the Dog movie that we're creating. But you
- 28:28Speaker 1: have also just a group of characters that you're rooting for,
- 28:31Speaker 1: you know, Hicks and Newt and and you don't want
- 28:34Speaker 1: any of them to die, and they all have just
- 28:36Speaker 1: different personalities and there is comedy to it, and it's
- 28:39Speaker 1: got a great plot, it's got great special effects. I
- 28:42Speaker 1: love Aliens, and I think every movie after Aliens in
- 28:45Speaker 1: that franchise stinks. Alien three Terrible Alien Resurrection horrendous. Both
- 28:50Speaker 1: Alien Versus Predators, Terrible Prometheus and the other movies that
- 28:53Speaker 1: just came out. I don't care for them, but Aliens
- 28:56Speaker 1: was just so damn good.
- 28:58Speaker 2: And again, you could do one, two, three, and I'll
- 29:02Speaker 2: even say four because I'm a fan of the Lethal
- 29:05Speaker 2: Weapons series. There's four. I'm a fan of the die
- 29:08Speaker 2: Hards there's three. So you don't always have to stop
- 29:11Speaker 2: at the second one, but stop with eight and nine
- 29:14Speaker 2: and ten, because like you said, they're never gonna be
- 29:17Speaker 2: as good.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Well die Hard went to five.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Oh that's right, And I actually probably unpopular opinion. I
- 29:23Speaker 2: actually like Live for Your Diehard. I like the story
- 29:26Speaker 2: behind need to be rated off. The other one I
- 29:28Speaker 2: didn't like. That's the one with the sun, right, Yeah, no,
- 29:30Speaker 2: that one's not that that's right. I forgot that went
- 29:32Speaker 2: to five.
- 29:32Speaker 1: That one's very cheap looking. But yeah, the alien story,
- 29:36Speaker 1: you know, it didn't need to continue. But that's Hollywood
- 29:39Speaker 1: for you. It made a lot of money, exactly, and
- 29:41Speaker 1: they want to, you know, capitalize on that. But that
- 29:44Speaker 1: that second one is just, in my opinion, a movie
- 29:48Speaker 1: that is an absolute masterpiece, a great film score and uh,
- 29:52Speaker 1: just just fantastic movie. Visually, it's very impressive. The guns
- 29:56Speaker 1: in it are amazing to look at. And uh, just
- 30:00Speaker 1: I had to crack my top five. What do you
- 30:02Speaker 1: got at your number five?
- 30:03Speaker 2: Mine's gonna be lethal Weapon? You're going with one, I'm
- 30:06Speaker 2: gonna go with one. Yeah, gotta go with the original.
- 30:08Speaker 2: I think that's like I said, even four adds new characters,
- 30:12Speaker 2: but just one, like you said, too good score opens up,
- 30:16Speaker 2: you know, jingle bell rock chick jumping off the off
- 30:19Speaker 2: the building.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Eric Clapton does the music for the movie as well.
- 30:23Speaker 1: He's really yeah, he's one of the composers for that movie.
- 30:27Speaker 1: And it's got great squib work, it's got great villains,
- 30:31Speaker 1: it's got.
- 30:32Speaker 2: The buddy amazing acting the buddy and that we were
- 30:35Speaker 2: talking about. No, I think forty.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Eight Hours came out a few years prior to that
- 30:39Speaker 1: with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolty, and that was really
- 30:42Speaker 1: the first one to do that buddy cop thing. But
- 30:45Speaker 1: I think again, like Aliens perfected what Alien did, I
- 30:49Speaker 1: think lethal Weapon perfected what forty eight Hours started. So
- 30:54Speaker 1: I love that, especially those two characters are so good,
- 30:57Speaker 1: and if they were to make another Lethal Weapon, I
- 31:00Speaker 1: wouldn't even mind because We talked about this with Rocky.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Those characters are so interesting. They don't need to be cops,
- 31:07Speaker 1: Like they've retired, like mind just seele what will they do?
- 31:10Speaker 1: And they go fishing like them just living their lives.
- 31:13Speaker 1: I think are is very interesting. But them meeting up
- 31:17Speaker 1: and not liking each other at first and then growing
- 31:19Speaker 1: to appreciate one another and him becoming part of the family.
- 31:22Speaker 1: He gets invited to the dinner at the end. I mean,
- 31:24Speaker 1: come on, that's good shit right there.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Yeah. No, like you said, you're rooting for him. You
- 31:28Speaker 2: got the family aspect that comes into it. Then he's
- 31:31Speaker 2: like he'll protect his myrtal's family like it's his own
- 31:34Speaker 2: because he's crazy, because he's the loner. You know, he
- 31:37Speaker 2: doesn't have a family.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Dude. The scene he puts the gun in his mouth
- 31:40Speaker 1: and he's debating on killing himself, I mean that's acting
- 31:43Speaker 1: one on one right there. He's not even saying anything.
- 31:46Speaker 2: You're feeling it.
- 31:46Speaker 1: You feel the emotion. You don't know what this guy
- 31:49Speaker 1: is gonna do. And when he realizes he really is,
- 31:51Speaker 1: he really look crazy. Like it's it's funny, but it's
- 31:54Speaker 1: also like, wow, this guy's a loose cannon. What is
- 31:58Speaker 1: he going to do? And then they sort of knew him.
- 32:00Speaker 1: The character isn't as dangerous, he's not as psychotic, you know,
- 32:03Speaker 1: by three and four. So that's why I still would
- 32:05Speaker 1: put number one. As you know, in my top five,
- 32:08Speaker 1: it probably just messed out. If there was a six,
- 32:10Speaker 1: I probably go with lethal Weapon. Let's move on. If
- 32:12Speaker 1: we talked aliens, I'm gonna go with Predator at number four.
- 32:15Speaker 1: And this is one of my favorite ensemble casts. You
- 32:18Speaker 1: got the Lake, great Carl Weathers, you got Jesse, the
- 32:20Speaker 1: Body of Ventura, and of course you have Arnold Schwarzenegger
- 32:23Speaker 1: and he's just at peak Arnold. His body it doesn't
- 32:27Speaker 1: look better at any moment. His acting has never been
- 32:30Speaker 1: as strong shoe, but when he's given a character that
- 32:33Speaker 1: doesn't have to say much, that's when he's at as strongest.
- 32:36Speaker 1: And this character of Dutch is fantastic. And this group
- 32:39Speaker 1: of individuals going into the jungle and they're sort of
- 32:43Speaker 1: set up, they're not really sure as to why they're
- 32:45Speaker 1: going there. They're there to you know, help hostages, but
- 32:47Speaker 1: then they're actually sent there and there's an alien life
- 32:50Speaker 1: form there that's hunting them. And the Predator is so
- 32:53Speaker 1: different than all these other I guess you could say
- 32:56Speaker 1: he's a horror icon, but he has more words, like,
- 33:00Speaker 1: for instance, he doesn't want to kill this woman. She's
- 33:04Speaker 1: unarmed and he doesn't kill her, and in future movies
- 33:07Speaker 1: he doesn't kill kids. And he realized somebody had cancer
- 33:10Speaker 1: because he could see the lungs and he's like, I'm
- 33:13Speaker 1: not going to kill this person and he's gonna die eventually.
- 33:15Speaker 1: He's there to hunt, and there's something I guess relatable
- 33:19Speaker 1: with humans with that, because what's the difference between a
- 33:22Speaker 1: human going to Africa and hunting a lion. That's essentially
- 33:25Speaker 1: what they're doing. They are predators. They go to a
- 33:28Speaker 1: planet to hunt, and they're not really villains in that sense.
- 33:31Speaker 1: They're just trying to take down the biggest threats on
- 33:34Speaker 1: the planet. Just so happens to be the human race
- 33:36Speaker 1: against this you know, militia force, this army ragtag group
- 33:40Speaker 1: of special force agents going up against an actual predator
- 33:44Speaker 1: is such a great concept and the creature design is fantastic.
- 33:48Speaker 1: In fact, James Cameron was talking with Stan Winston, who's
- 33:52Speaker 1: the guy who created all these special effects for Terminator
- 33:55Speaker 1: and Predator and Aliens and Jurassic Park and Edward Scissorhans
- 33:58Speaker 1: and all these movies. Stan Winston couldn't really figure out
- 34:01Speaker 1: the Predator design, and James Cameron said, why don't you
- 34:04Speaker 1: do this? And he drew like those you know, mandibles
- 34:06Speaker 1: that came out, and stan Winston was like, oh shit,
- 34:09Speaker 1: that's a really good idea. The dreads and believe it
- 34:12Speaker 1: or not, Jean Claude van Dam was originally cast as
- 34:15Speaker 1: the Predator and he had this goofy ass costume and
- 34:18Speaker 1: he kept on complaining on the set because he's also
- 34:21Speaker 1: very difficult to work with real and it was this
- 34:23Speaker 1: terrible looking design. When you have the time, look up,
- 34:25Speaker 1: Jean Claude van Dam Predator, its goofy looking red costume,
- 34:29Speaker 1: and they completely changed it around. They hired this like
- 34:33Speaker 1: seven foot tall dude to play the Predator, completely changed
- 34:36Speaker 1: the design of the character and that's what we got.
- 34:39Speaker 1: And I just love the creature design, the music, the
- 34:42Speaker 1: character is the action. The first twenty minutes of this
- 34:44Speaker 1: movie is an absolute just bloodbath of that army group
- 34:48Speaker 1: going into the jungle and just killing all these criminals
- 34:50Speaker 1: and blowing them away, saying one liners. And Jesse Ventre
- 34:54Speaker 1: has this chain gun, oh paintless he calls it, and
- 34:56Speaker 1: just mowing down the fucking jungle with it so much fun.
- 35:00Speaker 1: I remember watching this one as a kid with my
- 35:02Speaker 1: father and we're laughing because there is comedy to it.
- 35:05Speaker 1: We're making fun of the character he has a watch
- 35:07Speaker 1: on throughout it, and we're just like, why is he
- 35:09Speaker 1: still have this watch on? So I have fun memories
- 35:12Speaker 1: for it. I love the characters. I love I love Predator,
- 35:15Speaker 1: and I think some of the sequels are actually pretty fun.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Predator Too with Danny Glover is actually a pretty decent sequel,
- 35:20Speaker 1: So don't sleep on the sequels for the Predator franchise.
- 35:24Speaker 2: And I think that it's weird that they would have
- 35:26Speaker 2: tried to get somebody famous like John Claude to be
- 35:27Speaker 2: the Predator because you don't even see him any nothing talk.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I think it was this was before he was really
- 35:32Speaker 1: really OKAG. So Predator came out eighty seven, I want
- 35:37Speaker 1: to say so maybe like blood Sport came out there,
- 35:40Speaker 1: but it wasn't. That is fascinating that.
- 35:42Speaker 2: You're not eighty seven.
- 35:43Speaker 1: It would be interesting like why why would they pick
- 35:46Speaker 1: a guy who is a good looking guy, Van dam
- 35:49Speaker 1: I guess so you could say on the poster, you know,
- 35:50Speaker 1: Schwarzenegger Van dam Yeah, but yeah, they fired his ass
- 35:54Speaker 1: because he's difficult to work with. So I'm putting Predator
- 35:57Speaker 1: numero too.
- 35:57Speaker 2: I also think it's pretty interesting that you're five and
- 36:00Speaker 2: for Alien and Predator and you're like, I hate the
- 36:02Speaker 2: Alien verse Predator movie, but by themselves, oh, they're in
- 36:05Speaker 2: the top five.
- 36:06Speaker 1: Absolutely all right.
- 36:07Speaker 2: So my four is a nineteen eighties buddy cop movie
- 36:12Speaker 2: featuring Sylvester Stallone oh and Kurt Russell. Oh my god,
- 36:16Speaker 2: and the name of the movie is Tango and Case.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Going there.
- 36:18Speaker 2: I am going there.
- 36:19Speaker 1: That's insane.
- 36:20Speaker 2: I love this movie. I have watched this movie so
- 36:23Speaker 2: many times again. Comedy, just crazy guns that the guy
- 36:30Speaker 2: makes for Kurt Russell. He's got the gun in his
- 36:32Speaker 2: boot that he makes this tank of a truck for them.
- 36:36Speaker 2: They're driving, and then they're so opposite. You know. Stallone
- 36:40Speaker 2: is the wearing a three piece suit to work, he's
- 36:43Speaker 2: got the financial advisors reading the stocks, you know, and
- 36:46Speaker 2: then Kurt Russell is just the guy wearing the T shirt,
- 36:49Speaker 2: the jeans, you know, riding around in like a nineteen
- 36:54Speaker 2: sixties whatever muscle car. And they get set up, they
- 36:58Speaker 2: go to jail, the whole It's just a movie that
- 37:01Speaker 2: I just always watch. I have it on DVD.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I'm a big Kurt Russell fan. He's one of my
- 37:07Speaker 1: absolute favorites. The Thing from nineteen eighty two, one of
- 37:09Speaker 1: my favorite movies, Big Trouble in Little China. It's one
- 37:13Speaker 1: of my favorite movies.
- 37:14Speaker 2: Escape from New York.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Escape from New York is another one that's a classic,
- 37:17Speaker 1: and Tango and Cash is not one of those that
- 37:20Speaker 1: is a classic for me. Now, I didn't grow up
- 37:22Speaker 1: with it. That could be a big thing like Transformers.
- 37:25Speaker 1: We mentioned I grew up with that. If I watched
- 37:26Speaker 1: Transformers for the first time and I was twenty five
- 37:28Speaker 1: years old, I feel like this is the dumbest thing ever. Yeah,
- 37:31Speaker 1: but it was just so part of my childhood was
- 37:33Speaker 1: Tanging on Cash, one of those movies you grew up watching.
- 37:35Speaker 2: I don't even remember the first time I saw it.
- 37:37Speaker 2: I just remember that I watched it and I was like,
- 37:40Speaker 2: I really like this movie, and anytime it's on or
- 37:43Speaker 2: if I just get a a itch to watch it.
- 37:45Speaker 2: I grabbed the DVD and I throw it in and
- 37:48Speaker 2: like I said, I could just watch it over and
- 37:50Speaker 2: over again, you.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Have no other stallone movies on your list in your
- 37:53Speaker 1: top five.
- 37:55Speaker 2: I do not really.
- 37:57Speaker 1: So you think this is better than Demolition Man.
- 38:01Speaker 2: I'm a very big fan of Demolition fan Demolition Man two.
- 38:05Speaker 2: But no, I yeah, Tangle and Casher But like you said,
- 38:09Speaker 2: but like you said, I've watched it for twenty years,
- 38:12Speaker 2: probably probably more than that. Actually, so yeah, it's just
- 38:16Speaker 2: Terry Hatcher's hot in it too. By the way, I
- 38:18Speaker 2: know you like that.
- 38:19Speaker 1: I do love a nice Terry Hatcher playing.
- 38:22Speaker 2: I actually met her in the elevator in New York
- 38:24Speaker 2: City once.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Really, Yeah, who else did you meet? You met a
- 38:27Speaker 1: damn you were telling me, You're like, I met that guy.
- 38:30Speaker 1: What movie was it? You said you met the guy in.
- 38:34Speaker 2: Oh well, Home Alone? Three? Three husband's yeah, I met
- 38:40Speaker 2: him at at a Ranger game.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Yeah, let's get to number three. I think we're both
- 38:44Speaker 1: going to have this on our list. We mentioned it earlier.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Yippi kaye, motherfucker die Hard. I'm going with the OG
- 38:50Speaker 1: although I do like all four of them. I'm not
- 38:52Speaker 1: even gonna mention the first one.
- 38:54Speaker 2: Do have one on there, but it is not the original.
- 38:56Speaker 1: Yeah. Three, he with a Vengeance, which is good that
- 38:58Speaker 1: would be my second favorite, but the first one is
- 39:01Speaker 1: the one that I think is perfection. I love Reginald
- 39:03Speaker 1: vel Johnson, you know, Carl Winslow. I love that whole
- 39:07Speaker 1: dynamic of them not knowing what they even look like.
- 39:10Speaker 1: And then we mentioned the movie Flight Risk earlier, and
- 39:13Speaker 1: we're talking about because they sort of had a die
- 39:15Speaker 1: hard element of they're on you know, the woman on
- 39:19Speaker 1: the plane in Flight Risk is on the phone with
- 39:21Speaker 1: some guy and he's sort of walking him through how
- 39:23Speaker 1: to land a plane, and he's sort of like the
- 39:26Speaker 1: Reginald vel Johnson character Sergeant al Powell and die Hard,
- 39:30Speaker 1: but he's not. He's not when when reginaldvel Johnson, al
- 39:34Speaker 1: Powell and John mcclan when they meet up for the
- 39:37Speaker 1: first time and they have that emotion they hug each other,
- 39:39Speaker 1: I mean, he's more in love with al Powell than
- 39:42Speaker 1: he is with his wife. I feel like he's he's
- 39:43Speaker 1: more happy to see him, and just that character alone.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Al Powell character is such a good character because he
- 39:50Speaker 1: fired his gun by accident when he was a cop
- 39:53Speaker 1: and he hasn't fired his gun since because he accidentally
- 39:55Speaker 1: he accidentally killed. Doesn't say the kid died, but I'm
- 39:58Speaker 1: assuming he killed the kid, that is what I'm guessing.
- 40:01Speaker 1: And uh, you know, you get that great climax at
- 40:04Speaker 1: the end where one of the villains of Hans Gruber's
- 40:06Speaker 1: group ends up surviving and then al Pal draws his
- 40:10Speaker 1: gun for the first time and blows him away and
- 40:12Speaker 1: has that great shot sort of zooming in on him
- 40:14Speaker 1: holding the gun in front of him.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Smoke's coming out, and that character, that.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Character in itself is so great, but everyone else is
- 40:21Speaker 1: so good. You have Argyle, who's the limo driver. He's
- 40:24Speaker 1: Funny's run dmc and John McClean is such an average dude.
- 40:28Speaker 1: He's never been in a limo before, so he just
- 40:30Speaker 1: gets in the front seat. Is no how limos operate.
- 40:33Speaker 1: You got Holly, Who's I don't think in part three either,
- 40:36Speaker 1: And then I don't think she is in that movie.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Maybe they mentioned her, but I don't think they. Yeah,
- 40:44Speaker 1: the the villain though. This is where we're differentiating because
- 40:47Speaker 1: I love Jeremy Irons and you know, Gruber, whatever his
- 40:50Speaker 1: name is in the third one is fine. But Hans
- 40:53Speaker 1: Gruber is, in my opinion, the greatest villain in movie history.
- 40:58Speaker 1: And he's not your typical villain. That's gonna go toe
- 41:01Speaker 1: to toe blow for blow. He's not jacked up, he's
- 41:03Speaker 1: probably doesn't know how to throw a punch, but he's cerebral,
- 41:06Speaker 1: he's he's, you know, a leader of men. He's smart,
- 41:10Speaker 1: and he has this idea of robbing a bank and
- 41:13Speaker 1: he's just such a good foreign heel. You know, as
- 41:16Speaker 1: far as what I like with my villains, that's how
- 41:19Speaker 1: I like a villain to be written. But then there's
- 41:21Speaker 1: also other such great side characters. There's the one guy
- 41:25Speaker 1: who works with Holly who's high on cocaine and he's like, listen, Hans, Bobby,
- 41:29Speaker 1: let's let's talk this out. And he just gets blown away.
- 41:32Speaker 1: And this is great shot. You see the bullet go
- 41:35Speaker 1: through the back of the head. Such a great practical effect.
- 41:37Speaker 2: And then you have the guy reporter, right, the guy reporter.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Everybody who he's a dickless from a Ghostbusters they call
- 41:45Speaker 1: him dickless. Yeah, you got that guy who's an asshole.
- 41:49Speaker 1: There's so many good characters. All the henchmen that work
- 41:52Speaker 1: with Hans Kruber are fantastic, and uh, it's just it's
- 41:56Speaker 1: such a good movie. I know, people say, oh, it's
- 41:58Speaker 1: a Christmas he doesn't matter what type of movie it is.
- 42:00Speaker 1: It's a movie I could watch any month, any day.
- 42:03Speaker 1: I watched it on Christmas, you know, a week this
- 42:05Speaker 1: past year. I love it. Great music, great suspense, great
- 42:09Speaker 1: stunt work, and just an average dude. A guy who's
- 42:12Speaker 1: you know, like we mentioned, he's a New York City cop,
- 42:15Speaker 1: he's one of us. He smokes cigarettes, he's he's not
- 42:18Speaker 1: in the best of shape, he's not in bad shape,
- 42:20Speaker 1: but he's just like an average dude. And you're like,
- 42:21Speaker 1: I could roof for this guy. Because in the eighties,
- 42:23Speaker 1: before before you know, this movie came out die Hard,
- 42:27Speaker 1: you had Arnold, you had Stallone, you had Van Dam
- 42:29Speaker 1: you had these guys that were so jacked up on steroids,
- 42:32Speaker 1: and this was really the first like average dude. Yeah,
- 42:35Speaker 1: and that was sort of moving forward. In the nineties,
- 42:37Speaker 1: you got more average bodies. You know, you had guys
- 42:40Speaker 1: like Keanu Reeves being action stars. And I really think,
- 42:44Speaker 1: you know, movies like Lethal Weapon and die Hard really
- 42:47Speaker 1: are the ones that made that thing happen. In the
- 42:49Speaker 1: nineties where you had you didn't have the steroid bodies anymore. Yeah,
- 42:53Speaker 1: it was kind of goofy to have a jacked up
- 42:55Speaker 1: guy as an action hero.
- 42:56Speaker 2: And they're better actors. Yeah, million, they're better actors. They're
- 43:01Speaker 2: they're more relatable, you know to us who were the
- 43:04Speaker 2: young boys growing up playing cops and robbers and like, yeah,
- 43:07Speaker 2: that could be uso exactly, I don't have to be
- 43:08Speaker 2: in the gym in eight hours.
- 43:10Speaker 1: And now when I'm older, it's like even better because
- 43:12Speaker 1: I'm not that I'll never be Arnold, like I never
- 43:15Speaker 1: won't three, but I could be John McClain. So I
- 43:18Speaker 1: have that at number three? Did you have three at
- 43:21Speaker 1: number three or no?
- 43:22Speaker 2: I had it at two.
- 43:23Speaker 1: What do you got a three?
- 43:24Speaker 2: So at three I had two movies where I was
- 43:28Speaker 2: trying to figure out which one I like better. And
- 43:31Speaker 2: this is from what I call the Nicholas Cage trilogy.
- 43:35Speaker 2: So I always think of the Rock, conn Air, and
- 43:38Speaker 2: face Off as a trilogy, even though they all have
- 43:40Speaker 2: nothing to do with each other, because they were all
- 43:42Speaker 2: Nicholas Cage. They all came out within three years. It's tough.
- 43:49Speaker 1: I don't think Face Offs on the level of the
- 43:52Speaker 1: other two.
- 43:52Speaker 2: You don't think so really, even with the fun and.
- 43:55Speaker 1: Goofy got dumb moments He's rubbing the fucking face just
- 44:00Speaker 1: thing the wife does. And it also just doesn't make
- 44:02Speaker 1: sense because they just changed faces and they don't have
- 44:05Speaker 1: the same bodies, so like, wouldn't you notice that the
- 44:07Speaker 1: body's a bit different?
- 44:09Speaker 2: All right, I guess you made my pick. Oh I
- 44:11Speaker 2: forgot because we were talking about one liners and funny
- 44:13Speaker 2: things tangoing cash in the beginning when Sylvester Sloan stops
- 44:18Speaker 2: the truck and then they're looking for the drugs in
- 44:20Speaker 2: the truck and he's like, there's only gas in here, asshole,
- 44:23Speaker 2: and he like moves the guy away and shoots the
- 44:26Speaker 2: side of it and cocaine starts pouring out. He goes,
- 44:29Speaker 2: this fucking guy thinks he's Rambo, and Sloan goes, Rambo's
- 44:32Speaker 2: a pussy. So like we were talking about, like it's
- 44:35Speaker 2: just funny because it's him saying it about him. So
- 44:38Speaker 2: that was I forgot to bring that up. I actually
- 44:39Speaker 2: had it written down right next to danging cash, but uh,
- 44:42Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with con Air.
- 44:43Speaker 1: Then Yeah, I think that's it's great, great cast.
- 44:46Speaker 2: And now we talk about a movie the majority takes
- 44:50Speaker 2: place on a plane, Like we just saw Flight Risk.
- 44:53Speaker 2: The majority of the movie took place on a plane.
- 44:56Speaker 2: But it's just it's so I mean, you can't even
- 44:59Speaker 2: compare the too. And that's why I was saying to you,
- 45:01Speaker 2: I would have did things differently with flight Risk, where
- 45:04Speaker 2: I would have had them land somewhere or crash or
- 45:07Speaker 2: whatever it may be. Uh. But yeah, Kane, you got
- 45:10Speaker 2: Nicholas Cage, you got John Malkovich, You've got me King Raim,
- 45:13Speaker 2: Steve Buscemi, John Cusack. I didn't realized how much I
- 45:16Speaker 2: like John Cusack, but he's a lot of my movies.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Yeah he is, and just everything the story. You know,
- 45:22Speaker 2: a guy that you're rooting for gets a bad rap guy. Uh,
- 45:26Speaker 2: two guys messed with his wife. After he gets out
- 45:29Speaker 2: of the army. He ends up killing one of them
- 45:31Speaker 2: by accident. Now he's thrown in with all these Oh,
- 45:34Speaker 2: Danny Trejo's in it, Johnny twenty three rapist murderers, the worst. Yeah,
- 45:40Speaker 2: Steve Buscemi's got a mask on like Silence of the Lambs,
- 45:43Speaker 2: and oh, Bubba Bubba's in there.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Who's the who? Malkovich is the main villain.
- 45:48Speaker 2: John Cyrus Virus. But then his best friend is Bubba
- 45:52Speaker 2: from Forrest Gumbyes. Uh yeah, just great action movie. I
- 45:57Speaker 2: mean from start to the beginning. Great action, you're rooting
- 46:00Speaker 2: for the guy. There's comedy, there's corny one put the
- 46:03Speaker 2: Bunny back in the box.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Great special effects as well.
- 46:06Speaker 2: Again and oh, Dave Chappelle's in it. Yeah, I mean
- 46:09Speaker 2: the cast just goes on and on. So and that's
- 46:11Speaker 2: again another movie I can watch.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Who directed that one? That's not Bee it's Jerry Bruckheimer production.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I always think of, because what the lightning.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Bruckheimer rock Himer produces all these movies. But I don't
- 46:24Speaker 1: think it is a Michael Bay movie. Bay did the rock.
- 46:27Speaker 1: I want to say John Woo did a face off.
- 46:31Speaker 1: I don't know who directed conn Air. It's probably somebody
- 46:33Speaker 1: that's done a lot of actions.
- 46:34Speaker 3: Simon west Click is uh, let's see does he do
- 46:38Speaker 3: anything of because I mean to be given that cast
- 46:41Speaker 3: and all that budget, do you think you'd have to
- 46:43Speaker 3: do something that stands out.
- 46:46Speaker 2: From before it? You would think, right, he did the
- 46:47Speaker 2: expendables to the mechanic. It's a lot of a lot
- 46:51Speaker 2: of lower Croft, tomb Raider, the General's daughter. Conn Air
- 46:55Speaker 2: was ninety seven, Yeah, nothing big like that was his
- 46:59Speaker 2: first one? Wow, like first Yeah, actual.
- 47:02Speaker 1: He probably worked you know, uh behind the scenes, and.
- 47:05Speaker 2: He worked on Rick Astley is never going to give
- 47:07Speaker 2: you up music.
- 47:07Speaker 1: That's probably what got.
- 47:10Speaker 2: But yeah, I just like I said, conn Air, I
- 47:12Speaker 2: can watch.
- 47:13Speaker 1: It's a good one all the time. All right, let's
- 47:15Speaker 1: move on to number two. You mentioned your number two,
- 47:17Speaker 1: Diehard three Simon grow Bro. That's the guy's name.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Simon says, plays the game. I mean just again
- 47:24Speaker 2: like his brothers, very smart.
- 47:26Speaker 1: I love Jeremy Irons.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Yeah, he plays a great character. You got Samuel Jackson
- 47:31Speaker 2: in there now. The comedic stuff between them two when
- 47:35Speaker 2: he keeps calling him heyesus. He's like, why you call
- 47:37Speaker 2: me hayesous? I look Spanish to you. He's like the
- 47:39Speaker 2: man said hezus. He goes no, he said, hey zeus.
- 47:41Speaker 2: You know, fire a lightning bolt in your ass.
- 47:44Speaker 1: Uh.
- 47:44Speaker 2: They're great together. A lot of mind stuff in that one,
- 47:48Speaker 2: like he's making them play games and.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Like Jigsaw in a sense. And then you also have
- 47:53Speaker 1: the New York City setting, which.
- 47:55Speaker 2: Is great and it's Central Stadium.
- 47:57Speaker 1: It's not a Christmas movie. It starts off with hot
- 48:00Speaker 1: time in the summer. Uh, some summer movie I forget.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Uh the music that starts off the movie, but it's
- 48:07Speaker 1: it's in the summer. It's very hot. They're sweating, you know,
- 48:10Speaker 1: they're wearing the wife beaters and whatnot. It's a different
- 48:13Speaker 1: sort of feeling. I'm glad they got away from the
- 48:16Speaker 1: Christmas element. Yeah, and they got out of la So, yeah,
- 48:20Speaker 1: they tried they tried something different. I still think the
- 48:23Speaker 1: original is superior. But if I I've gone back and
- 48:27Speaker 1: forth throughout my life, I think in recent years I've
- 48:29Speaker 1: said the first one's better, but there was a time
- 48:30Speaker 1: where I did say Diehart three was the better.
- 48:33Speaker 2: And I think it's just an easier watch too. It's
- 48:36Speaker 2: again the comedy, the the puzzle stuff.
- 48:39Speaker 1: Like to me, it was a big movie too. It's
- 48:41Speaker 1: the highest grossing movie that year. I believe a rarity
- 48:44Speaker 1: that an R rated movie is the highest grossing movie
- 48:46Speaker 1: of the year.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Well, then I guess I made a good pick at
- 48:48Speaker 2: number two.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Yeah, my number two, I bet you is probably your
- 48:51Speaker 1: number one.
- 48:54Speaker 2: No, no way, yeah, no way, terminator two.
- 48:57Speaker 1: No, you didn't have that terminator.
- 48:59Speaker 2: I knew, I knew, I knew you were gonna have
- 49:01Speaker 2: that on there.
- 49:01Speaker 1: That's insane.
- 49:02Speaker 2: You're gonnae You're gonna absolutely hate my number one worse.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Than tangoing Cash.
- 49:07Speaker 2: All Right, I got Terminators.
- 49:09Speaker 1: I love Terminator the original, but like we said with Aliens, uh,
- 49:15Speaker 1: you know, Terminator two took what the first one did
- 49:18Speaker 1: and just made it better. You have better special effects,
- 49:21Speaker 1: you have that twist of Arnold being the good guy.
- 49:24Speaker 1: I love the dynamic of John Connor and Arnold. There's
- 49:27Speaker 1: so many great comedic moments, so many moments that I
- 49:32Speaker 1: just quote He's not my mother Todd, moments that I
- 49:36Speaker 1: just always remember. Uh. The action sequences, though, are the
- 49:39Speaker 1: things that really stand out. That chase when John Connor
- 49:43Speaker 1: is in the arcade and he's running from the T
- 49:45Speaker 1: one thousand played by Robert Patrick to Perfection.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Chasing them and he pulls out that gun. But then
- 49:52Speaker 1: Arnold shows up with the with the roses and the
- 49:54Speaker 1: shotguns in there, and he's blown away and there's one
- 49:57Speaker 1: guy in between them just gets fucking blown to the
- 50:00Speaker 1: ens and Arnold covers John Connor and just get blasted
- 50:03Speaker 1: with the pistol and they're fighting and going back and
- 50:06Speaker 1: forth and there's gone through glass and then John Connor
- 50:09Speaker 1: gets on the dirt bike and the chase scene with
- 50:11Speaker 1: the giant eighteen wheeler chasing them, and that's a real
- 50:15Speaker 1: eighteen wheeler, and that's a real stunt of that eighteen
- 50:17Speaker 1: wheeler going off that bridge onto the ground and continuing
- 50:21Speaker 1: to drive. And it's such an adrenaline rush. But it
- 50:24Speaker 1: wouldn't be what it is if there wasn't a story.
- 50:27Speaker 1: If that was just like that wrestling thing I was
- 50:29Speaker 1: talking about, If it was just cool stunts and there
- 50:31Speaker 1: was just stunts happening, it would be cool, but it
- 50:34Speaker 1: wouldn't have what it has. And that is an amazing story.
- 50:38Speaker 1: And I love time travel and I love futuristic robots.
- 50:41Speaker 1: As I mentioned, Transformers is the greatest movie of all time.
- 50:43Speaker 1: So you have all these elements that I love, the
- 50:45Speaker 1: comedic elements, the action sequences, groundbreaking special effects, not just
- 50:51Speaker 1: the practical effects with by Stan Winston Studios, but cgi
- 50:55Speaker 1: And this is one of, if not I think the
- 50:57Speaker 1: first movie where people really realized what she was. There
- 51:01Speaker 1: was The Abyss a few years prior to that, but
- 51:03Speaker 1: this movie was much bigger as far as you know,
- 51:05Speaker 1: box officeer seats go and that T one thousand, that
- 51:08Speaker 1: liquid metal creature when it's going through the you know,
- 51:11Speaker 1: the jail cell and when it's getting exploded and it
- 51:14Speaker 1: walks through. Nobody saw anything like that before. So that
- 51:17Speaker 1: was so revolutionary. Mixed that with the practical effects of
- 51:20Speaker 1: Stan Winston Studios, the story of the acting, the cast,
- 51:24Speaker 1: everything is just so good.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Like I said, I've I've obviously seen Terminated too. I
- 51:28Speaker 2: probably haven't seen it in twenty years, So it's not
- 51:30Speaker 2: one of my top movies. But the first thing that
- 51:33Speaker 2: pops into my head when you bring it up is
- 51:35Speaker 2: the liquid metal. That's what his hand turns into the sword,
- 51:39Speaker 2: Like those are the things you remember from, you know,
- 51:42Speaker 2: a movie like that.
- 51:43Speaker 1: And he can't he can't just make a machine gun.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Has to be like knive knives and stabbing objects, so
- 51:48Speaker 1: you know, they have they have things that explain why
- 51:51Speaker 1: he can't do certain things. Obviously, these movies time travel
- 51:55Speaker 1: is always a bit tricky, like why wouldn't he just
- 51:56Speaker 1: travel back to when Sarah Connor was three years and
- 52:00Speaker 1: just blow her away? Like we just have to sort
- 52:03Speaker 1: of throw that out of the way when it comes
- 52:05Speaker 1: to Yeah, so it is what it is, but it
- 52:08Speaker 1: has like a good message about redemption and like a
- 52:11Speaker 1: mother and son sort of reconnecting and maybe you didn't
- 52:14Speaker 1: get along at some point, and the mother's sort of weird.
- 52:17Speaker 1: And Edward Furlong was a really good child actor and.
- 52:20Speaker 2: Unfortunately I was just gonna ask you who was the kid.
- 52:22Speaker 1: He's great, and uh, you know, unfortunately drugs got the
- 52:25Speaker 1: best of them. He's doing better now, he's uh, you know,
- 52:28Speaker 1: sober these days, but I mean his career is done.
- 52:31Speaker 1: Like he was going to be in Terminator three and
- 52:35Speaker 1: he was just about to start filming it and he
- 52:38Speaker 1: relapsed and they were like, we can't touch you, dude.
- 52:41Speaker 2: You gotta it's hard man being a child actor. You know,
- 52:44Speaker 2: it's fun.
- 52:45Speaker 1: It's a fucked up, fucked up life.
- 52:47Speaker 2: You're in a weird lifestyle. You're getting paid lots of money.
- 52:50Speaker 1: How do you live your life? How do you go
- 52:52Speaker 1: to school? How do you do normal things? He couldn't
- 52:54Speaker 1: just go to the mall, Like that's John Connor. You're
- 52:58Speaker 1: just in a five hundred million dollar movie. How are
- 53:00Speaker 1: you supposed to, you know, go on a date. How
- 53:02Speaker 1: are you supposed to go to McDonald's and do these
- 53:03Speaker 1: things that you know, kids are just used to doing.
- 53:05Speaker 1: Playing football. You just can't do that.
- 53:07Speaker 2: Me and Jackie watched Next Level Chef last night, and
- 53:10Speaker 2: one of the contestants was Adam Sandler's son in Grown Ups,
- 53:14Speaker 2: Oh Real grown Ups two. Yeah, I'm like, wow, And
- 53:17Speaker 2: now he's on a cooking show that's inter sing life.
- 53:19Speaker 2: It's not even that long ago. I mean when they
- 53:22Speaker 2: I mean ten years ago maybe growing up.
- 53:24Speaker 1: So yeah, I want to say twenty twenty, twelve, twenty, yeah,
- 53:26Speaker 1: something like that.
- 53:27Speaker 2: So I was like, Wow, this guy's already on a
- 53:28Speaker 2: cooking show. Okay.
- 53:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:30Speaker 1: It's interesting where some of these people just stop acting
- 53:33Speaker 1: and they say, I'm just gonna, you know, try and
- 53:35Speaker 1: do something that's completely different. But yeah, Terminator two. Uh,
- 53:38Speaker 1: growing up, it was the stuff of legend. And I
- 53:40Speaker 1: actually think I saw a Terminator two before I saw
- 53:43Speaker 1: the first Terminator. I think a lot of people think
- 53:45Speaker 1: Terminator two is the first Terminator. I've had people think that.
- 53:49Speaker 1: I remember, yeah, because it was just always on TV.
- 53:52Speaker 2: Is so much more popular, and so they always thought
- 53:54Speaker 2: Arnold was the good guy.
- 53:55Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah. And you know what's so funny is
- 53:59Speaker 1: three of these movies, all these movies are rated are
- 54:01Speaker 1: by the way, okay that I have on my list,
- 54:03Speaker 1: and three of them all had toy lines for them
- 54:06Speaker 1: like there was an alien's toy line, there was a
- 54:08Speaker 1: Predator toylene, there was a Terminator toy line. It's like
- 54:10Speaker 1: they're selling these toys to kids, and there's no cartoon
- 54:13Speaker 1: based off of any of these. They're just like, yeah,
- 54:15Speaker 1: our rated movie where people, you know, murder each other.
- 54:19Speaker 1: Here's a little toy by Kenner. So very very unique.
- 54:22Speaker 1: So now we're up to number one.
- 54:24Speaker 2: Do you think that's why you like those? Because we're
- 54:26Speaker 2: into the toy thing have any bearing on it, or
- 54:29Speaker 2: it could have, It could have a little bit of
- 54:32Speaker 2: it subconsciously.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Perhaps perhaps I want to I don't want you to
- 54:36Speaker 1: even tell me you're number one, because now I'm trying to. Oh,
- 54:39Speaker 1: I know what it is.
- 54:40Speaker 2: You have to know. I talk about it all the time.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Yes, okay, it is Bad Boys two dose dose.
- 54:47Speaker 2: So this goes to what you say about what you
- 54:51Speaker 2: grow up watching and things like that. So when the
- 54:53Speaker 2: when Bad Boys and Bad Boys two came out, I
- 54:57Speaker 2: had just met my friends down here when I moved
- 54:59Speaker 2: down here, maybe a little after actually, because it came
- 55:02Speaker 2: out in two thousand and three and I moved down
- 55:04Speaker 2: here five, so I had already seen it with like
- 55:07Speaker 2: my cousins and like our friends because Bad Boys the
- 55:11Speaker 2: first one. I think it's a great movie. And the
- 55:14Speaker 2: only reason I think I like the second one better
- 55:16Speaker 2: is because of the bad guy and just but again,
- 55:22Speaker 2: now you have Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, so obviously
- 55:24Speaker 2: you have comedy in there. You got the the buddy
- 55:27Speaker 2: cop thing. You know, everybody wants to be. Mike Lowry
- 55:29Speaker 2: he's the player wearing the fancy suits. And Mark Lawrence
- 55:33Speaker 2: got the wife and kids at home, just trying not
- 55:35Speaker 2: to get killed, like almost like a lethal weapon. One guy,
- 55:38Speaker 2: you know, Mike, Mike Lowry is the gunslinging guy, he
- 55:41Speaker 2: shoots everyone. And then Mark Lawrence is more the Myrtaal,
- 55:45Speaker 2: the Danny Glover character. But like I said, this movie
- 55:48Speaker 2: came out in two thousand and three. Me and my
- 55:50Speaker 2: friends still quote this movie probably at least once. Every
- 55:54Speaker 2: time we see each other, something from the movie is
- 55:57Speaker 2: brought up. I watch it all the time. I mean,
- 56:01Speaker 2: if it's on, I'm gonna watch it. So I just again,
- 56:06Speaker 2: might not be a popular opinion, but.
- 56:08Speaker 1: Listen, it's your list. That's the beauty of it. So
- 56:11Speaker 1: nobody can tell you what you like.
- 56:14Speaker 2: Well, So, like you said, you had alien, you have
- 56:15Speaker 2: predator a terminator, right, So you got three science fiction
- 56:19Speaker 2: type action movies with a creature in it, whatever it
- 56:23Speaker 2: may be. Mine seemed to be the lethal weapon, the
- 56:27Speaker 2: tangling gas, the buddy cop thing with the comedy in there,
- 56:30Speaker 2: with a good bad guy, tons of gun scenes, tons
- 56:34Speaker 2: of car chases. So that's that's the type of action.
- 56:38Speaker 1: I like, bad guys are so important in these movies.
- 56:41Speaker 1: And there's two ways you can go with the bad
- 56:42Speaker 1: guy with some of these movies. Sometimes the bad guy's
- 56:45Speaker 1: so cool, like you're sort of rooty for them, and
- 56:47Speaker 1: then other times you're like, fuck kill, can't wait for
- 56:51Speaker 1: him to get killed.
- 56:52Speaker 2: So the first Bad Boys, I think, is that way
- 56:54Speaker 2: where you're like, fuck this guy. This guy is mean,
- 56:57Speaker 2: he kills everyone. And the second one is like the
- 57:00Speaker 2: Spanish guy, the don you know, the Don, the Rico,
- 57:04Speaker 2: suave guy, drug guy. But there's just so many funny
- 57:08Speaker 2: lines in it. Like I said, me and my friends
- 57:10Speaker 2: talk about he kills, he kills like his number two
- 57:14Speaker 2: and his like seventy five year old mom comes out
- 57:16Speaker 2: in the balcony. She goes, Johnny, what happened to Robert?
- 57:19Speaker 2: Though he goes, I don't know mama, he killed himself. Meanwhile,
- 57:21Speaker 2: he just blew his head off, like and then she
- 57:24Speaker 2: goes send his mama some nice flowers. Okay, mob, we'll
- 57:27Speaker 2: do like, you know, just stupid stuff like that that
- 57:29Speaker 2: we just always talk about.
- 57:30Speaker 1: And Will Smith, you know, he he's got to be
- 57:32Speaker 1: in the running of that Mount rush More with Independence Day,
- 57:35Speaker 1: which we both love. Men in Black, which I really.
- 57:38Speaker 2: Love, very good.
- 57:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I would put that. I guess it's an action movie.
- 57:42Speaker 1: It's definitely science fic. Yeah, action, you know. Uh, He's
- 57:46Speaker 1: had some other good actions. I robot, what's the one
- 57:50Speaker 1: enemy of the stage that was?
- 57:52Speaker 2: That was actually on my list.
- 57:53Speaker 1: That's a really good I love that.
- 57:57Speaker 2: That's a very cons on Scott conn dot com seth
- 58:04Speaker 2: green Jack.
- 58:05Speaker 1: Black Jack Black's and that. Yeah.
- 58:06Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's a very that's a very good movie.
- 58:09Speaker 2: I like that movie a lot. It was on my list.
- 58:10Speaker 1: I think Will Smith, although he hasn't done them in
- 58:13Speaker 1: recent years, he's a solid action star. Yeah, A lot
- 58:16Speaker 1: of just not movie stars anymore. Unfortunately, the franchise is
- 58:20Speaker 1: king and it's that nobody really goes to the movie like, Oh,
- 58:23Speaker 1: here's the new Tom Hanks movie, here's the new you know, uh,
- 58:26Speaker 1: Tom Cruise movie. It's always has to be existing properties
- 58:30Speaker 1: that people are excited in.
- 58:30Speaker 2: Mission impossible, not exactly the.
- 58:32Speaker 1: Top gun, you know, two and three my number one movie.
- 58:36Speaker 1: Action movie is probably my top three favorite movies of
- 58:39Speaker 1: all time. It's got, in my opinion, the greatest ensemble
- 58:43Speaker 1: cast of villains ever assembled. It's got, in my opinion,
- 58:46Speaker 1: the greatest design for any character in movie history. And
- 58:50Speaker 1: on top of that, it is one of the funniest
- 58:52Speaker 1: films of all time and the goorious films of all times.
- 58:56Speaker 1: RoboCop from nineteen eighty seven, I'd buy that for dollar
- 59:00Speaker 1: I fucking love RoboCop. And on paper, if you say RoboCop,
- 59:05Speaker 1: people might think it's a very dumb movie. It's like, oh, RoboCop,
- 59:08Speaker 1: It's so stupid. What a dumb title it is. In fact,
- 59:10Speaker 1: the director, Paul Verhoven, he got the script and he
- 59:13Speaker 1: said this, I'm not reading this like it's the dumbest
- 59:16Speaker 1: title of all time. Then his wife read it and
- 59:19Speaker 1: she was like, you really need to read this. This
- 59:21Speaker 1: is like really smart. You know. It's sort of tongue
- 59:24Speaker 1: in cheek and it's poking fun. It's a satire. It's
- 59:26Speaker 1: making fun of politics of the time. It's making fun
- 59:29Speaker 1: of businesses at the time, and he read it. He
- 59:31Speaker 1: was like, this is brilliant. I am going to put
- 59:33Speaker 1: my own spin on it, but I really like what
- 59:35Speaker 1: we have here. And there's a lot of representation of
- 59:39Speaker 1: different things that you know, this movie's a christ allegory there.
- 59:42Speaker 1: You know, the guy who gets murdered and then resurrected
- 59:45Speaker 1: and brought back to life. So he plays into that.
- 59:47Speaker 1: You know, he has RoboCop walking on water in certain
- 59:50Speaker 1: scenes and he can't really tell it, but he specifically
- 59:52Speaker 1: made this, uh too to make light I guess of
- 59:56Speaker 1: the situation of Jesus. He's he's a very interesting direct
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: Paul Verhoven, but the whole cast is amazing. Clarence Bodiker
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: played by kurtwood Smith is right up there with Hans
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Gruber as far as greatest villains go. I love the
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: character design. I mean, the Alien Queen is amazing, the
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: Predator is fantastic, the liquid metal guy is great. But RoboCop,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: that design is so fucking awesome. And they don't blow
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: their load with this movie, because if this movie came
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: out today, you'd see RoboCop within the first five minutes
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: in this movie, you lead up with Alex Murphy. You
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: get to like this guy. He gets killed, he gets resurrected,
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: and the businessman don't give a shit. They're like, you know,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: his arm is sort of working, and you're like, we'll
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: get rid of the arm. We'll have to get rid
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: of the arm. It is what it is. We don't
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: even care about this guy's memories. We don't not even
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: gonna tell his wife what happened to him. We're just
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: gonna take him and use his body and make him
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: this robotic officer. So it's pretty fucked up, you know
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: what they do to this guy. But Alex Murphy, you
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: get to meet him, and then you sort of hear
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: about RoboCop and you see a first person point of
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: view of RoboCop, you know, not being able to move.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: But then you're introduced to RoboCop. You see his you know,
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: his boots, and then you see his arm and then
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: you see a shadow. It's this huge build up when
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: you get to actually see RoboCop with his gun, which
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: is the greatest gun at all of cinema, you know,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: doing target practice. Then you get this full view of
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: him and it's just that scene alone is so brilliant directed,
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: because it's not what it would be done today, where
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: you just be like, there's RoboCop. Yeah, you slowly see him,
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: you hear him, you know his his footprints, and you
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: know he has such a distinct walk, and I'm gonna
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: put that in. I'll edit the sound of him walking
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: at this moment. But everything about it, the sound design,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: the bullets, the squib work, the comedy, everything about RoboCop
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: is fucking perfection. It is one of my favorite movies
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: and by far my favorite action movie. When's the last
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: time you've seen.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: Robot I was just gonna say, from now on, when
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: we do this, you got to give me your list
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: beforehand so that I can rewatch these movies seen in
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: twenty years.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: RoboCop is so good and I think you would like it.
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: Have you seen all of mine?
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: I or no name him again. I've seen Bad Boys two,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: I've seen.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Diar, seen conn Air, Tango and Cash Lethal Weapon.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: I have not seen Off Tango Cash. All right, here's
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: the deal. I will watch Tango and Cash.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: Okay, you will watch Rubble Cup done.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: That's what we'll be doing next time. But I love
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: robo Cup and I love action movies, and it's a
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: damn shame that we're not really getting the action movies
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: that we once had because all of my movies are
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: besides Terminator two eighties movies and Terminator two based off
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: of an eighties property, all of yours.
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: My latest one is Bad Boys Doing that's two thousand
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: and three, and that's based on a property from the nineties,
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: from ninety seven, I think, so essentially, there hasn't been
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: like anything twenty years in our minds that tops what
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: came out thirty something years ago. Nope, not that I
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: can think of.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: That's why Hollywood needs to listen to our Dog Getting
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: Kidnapped movie.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: I think we're gonna have to work that out a
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: little more.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: No, no, no, it's perfect as is all right, Jonathan,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: we've been yeah, and for almost two hours at this point.
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: Well, when it's our favorite genre, eat both of us.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: We could talk about it.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: For and we so much more to talk about. So
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: next time we'll have you back on, we'll discuss RoboCop.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: I think in detail. I haven't done a full RoboCop
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: deep dive in a while. It Yeah, and I'll watch
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: Tango and Cash. That's the deal.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: I like it.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: Excellent. Thank you Jonathan, Thank you everybody for listening to
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: Film Reel so long,
