- 0:00Speaker 1: Because we do know that plenty of people are looking
- 0:02Speaker 1: at going away over the Christmas period and you need
- 0:06Speaker 1: to make sure that their homes are secure and that
- 0:09Speaker 1: people aren't able to easily get in. Now, a person
- 0:12Speaker 1: who knows a lot about how people will try and
- 0:16Speaker 1: get into your homes and the different things that they
- 0:18Speaker 1: do is Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland, who is in
- 0:22Speaker 1: charge of Strikeforce Trident. Good morning to you, Mark.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Good morning Katie, and good morning to you listeners.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Thank you so much for your time now, Mark, I
- 0:31Speaker 1: know it's probably been an incredibly busy year for you
- 0:34Speaker 1: in terms of well keeping all that property crime trying
- 0:38Speaker 1: your best to catch those who are engaged in it.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yes, Katie, it has been a very very busy year
- 0:45Speaker 2: and it remains that way. Just hopefully we can saw
- 0:49Speaker 2: things down a little bit heading into Christmas. Yeah.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Now, over the Christmas period, it is a time where
- 0:54Speaker 1: a lot of people choose to go on holidays, they
- 0:56Speaker 1: head away. I know most people sort of think about
- 0:59Speaker 1: how they going to keep their houses secure, but some
- 1:02Speaker 1: maybe haven't given it as much thought as they should.
- 1:06Speaker 1: What are the sort of simple things that we can
- 1:08Speaker 1: do to make sure that our house isn't easy to
- 1:10Speaker 1: be broken into.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Okay, to start with, if your vehicles I'm going to
- 1:15Speaker 2: be parked in your drive, I just ensure that you
- 1:17Speaker 2: don't have any spare keys in the glove box or
- 1:20Speaker 2: in the console that are in sight. Take them with
- 1:23Speaker 2: you if possible. Keep your valuables out of sight from
- 1:28Speaker 2: the front door of the windows. Lock all your doors
- 1:30Speaker 2: and windows. When you're locking your security screens, try and
- 1:34Speaker 2: remove the care as well, because people will push their
- 1:38Speaker 2: finger or an item through the screen door and be
- 1:40Speaker 2: able to flick that lock and open the door to
- 1:42Speaker 2: gain entry. Let your neighbors and family know that you're
- 1:48Speaker 2: going away and ask them to keep an eye on
- 1:50Speaker 2: the property. Install some sense of lights and cameras if
- 1:54Speaker 2: you can, or an alarm system. Also, if you get
- 1:57Speaker 2: to your friends, to check on the premises at random times,
- 2:01Speaker 2: just so it looks in case someone is sort of
- 2:04Speaker 2: looking at your house and looking to know when your
- 2:06Speaker 2: friends are family going to come and check on it.
- 2:09Speaker 2: And also collect your mail. Get someone to collect your
- 2:11Speaker 2: mail quite often if you leave your mail building up
- 2:15Speaker 2: in a letter box. Over a period of time, it
- 2:17Speaker 2: becomes quite obviously there's no one at home.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And Mark a lot of these stuff seems really common sense,
- 2:22Speaker 1: like for a lot of us listening. But do you
- 2:24Speaker 1: find I know you've been a territory police officer for
- 2:26Speaker 1: a lot of years. Do you find over the Christmas break,
- 2:30Speaker 1: you know that people sort of leave that common sense
- 2:32Speaker 1: out the door sometimes and do things that they really shouldn't.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yeah, Unfortunately at times they do, whether that's just the
- 2:39Speaker 2: excitement of perhaps the Christmas holidays and going away and
- 2:43Speaker 2: you know, looking forward to a well earned break, they
- 2:45Speaker 2: do tan to overlook some of the simple things. So
- 2:48Speaker 2: I could just ask them public just to keep that
- 2:50Speaker 2: in mind if you are going away, to try and
- 2:54Speaker 2: take note of all any safety precautions so you don't
- 2:57Speaker 2: come back from holidays and end up with a unfortunate
- 3:00Speaker 2: Christmas period.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you see again, I know you've been around
- 3:05Speaker 1: for a long while. Do you see over the Christmas
- 3:08Speaker 1: break and over that holiday period, you know some of
- 3:12Speaker 1: those breakings increase or is it more just you know,
- 3:16Speaker 1: like that it's just that opportunistic sort of crime.
- 3:20Speaker 2: It's just opportunistic coatie. We don't see increase just because
- 3:25Speaker 2: Christmas time. It's sometimes that actually works in their favorite
- 3:29Speaker 2: because a lot of people might be on leave that
- 3:31Speaker 2: they actually don't take holidays, so people are home and
- 3:34Speaker 2: on school holidays at home through the day, so less
- 3:37Speaker 2: chance of breaking through the daytime on holidays if you
- 3:40Speaker 2: are home or the kids that are home, which is
- 3:42Speaker 2: a good thing.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Hey, before I let you go, I know that you know.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Like I said before, it does seem pretty common sense.
- 3:48Speaker 1: But for some people they might want some further detail.
- 3:51Speaker 1: They can head over to the neighborhood Watch website, can't they?
- 3:54Speaker 1: And is there still that you know those market pens
- 3:57Speaker 1: or whatever they are where you can write your details
- 3:59Speaker 1: on you more expensive kind of stuff, so that then
- 4:02Speaker 1: if it is stolen, it's easy to be identified.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Yeah, you can go over to the day would watching
- 4:08Speaker 2: crime stoppers for information and we still do here at
- 4:12Speaker 2: our office have those marking bents which are a good thing.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Here you can mark your property and can't be seen
- 4:18Speaker 2: on us with an ultraviolet light.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, Mark Bland, good to hear from you this morning.
- 4:23Speaker 1: I hope it's a nice quiet Christmas for our territory police,
- 4:27Speaker 1: particularly for you with Strikeforce Trident. Mate. Good on you.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Thank you so much for your time this morning, and
- 4:33Speaker 1: I know that you and your team work really bloody
- 4:35Speaker 1: hard to make sure that you do catch those people
- 4:38Speaker 1: who are involved in property crime. So thank you for
- 4:41Speaker 1: the work.
- 4:41Speaker 2: That you do. Thank you very much, Katie, and thank
- 4:44Speaker 2: you to all your listeners. I appreciate it.
