- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey everyone, it's Mike Michelson coming at you from the
- 0:02Speaker 1: other side of a game that should not have happened,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and I mean that in the best and worst ways possible.
- 0:08Speaker 1: If you watched this thing tonight at Tropicana Field, you
- 0:11Speaker 1: know exactly what I'm talking about. Cooper Pratt hit a
- 0:14Speaker 1: home run in the top of the 12th inning to
- 0:16Speaker 1: give us a one-run lead, and for about 15 minutes
- 0:19Speaker 1: we were thinking about confetti. Then the bottom half happened,
- 0:22Speaker 1: and I don't know about you, but I'm still staring
- 0:24Speaker 1: at my ceiling wondering if that was real. Four singles,
- 0:27Speaker 1: no outs recorded. And just like that, the sweep goes
- 0:31Speaker 1: away and this World Series gets a game five. But
- 0:34Speaker 1: let me walk through this because there's so much here
- 0:36Speaker 1: we're talking about, both the stuff that makes me want
- 0:38Speaker 1: to throw my remote and the stuff that makes me
- 0:40Speaker 1: proud to wear this jersey. First, the big picture. We
- 0:44Speaker 1: still lead this series three games to one. That's what matters.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Tampa Bay won tonight, avoided the sweep, and we are
- 0:50Speaker 1: not the first team to ever win seven straight through
- 0:53Speaker 1: a best of seven LCS and a best of seven
- 0:56Speaker 1: World Series. That's cool. That's fine. We'll take it. But
- 0:59Speaker 1: the way we lost this one stings. Let me take
- 1:03Speaker 1: you back to the beginning because there's a story here.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Dustin May was sharp early. He went through the bottom
- 1:08Speaker 1: of the first without allowing anything, then got hit in
- 1:11Speaker 1: the second on a Chandler Simpson double that played a
- 1:13Speaker 1: Johnny DeLuca. That was the one-run lead Tampa Bay built.
- 1:17Speaker 1: And for a moment, you could see the old fear
- 1:19Speaker 1: creeping in, that feeling of watching a Rays team get
- 1:22Speaker 1: comfortable at home and thinking maybe they're going to pull
- 1:24Speaker 1: this out. But the Brewers answered in the fourth. Sal
- 1:27Speaker 1: Freelick lined a single, and then Cooper Pratt did what
- 1:30Speaker 1: he has done all October, absolutely destroyed a ball to
- 1:33Speaker 1: left field, two outs, and that double evened the score
- 1:36Speaker 1: at one apiece. Now here's where it gets a little
- 1:39Speaker 1: messy on our end. The Rays got the lead right
- 1:41Speaker 1: back on what I'm going to call the least baseball
- 1:43Speaker 1: play of the entire series. Caminero was standing on second base,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and DeLuca hit a chopper to David Hamilton at third.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Hamilton fielded it through to first, and it was a
- 1:52Speaker 1: throwing error that let Caminero score. We challenged the tag play,
- 1:56Speaker 1: but the call on the field stood. And I get it.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Sometimes you've just got to tip your cap because that's baseball.
- 2:02Speaker 1: The ball hit the right spot on the fielding hand
- 2:05Speaker 1: and went sideways. Nobody's dying over that. But it put
- 2:08Speaker 1: us in a 2-1 hole and made me nervous because
- 2:10Speaker 1: Tampa Bay was going to protect that lead like it
- 2:12Speaker 1: was the last dollar in the house. The fifth inning
- 2:15Speaker 1: gave us some life. David Hamilton, who had made that
- 2:18Speaker 1: throwing error earlier, stepped into the batter's box and absolutely
- 2:22Speaker 1: launched a solo home run to right center. about 391
- 2:26Speaker 1: feet of pure redemption. Tied it at two, and you
- 2:29Speaker 1: could feel the energy shift in that ballpark. The Brewers
- 2:32Speaker 1: had punched back twice now and we were in a
- 2:35Speaker 1: real ballgame. From there, it was a pitcher's affair through
- 2:38Speaker 1: the early innings of extras. Neither team could muster much.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Tropicana Field was quiet except for the traveling fans who
- 2:45Speaker 1: made the trek down to St. Pete. The Brewers did
- 2:47Speaker 1: what they had to do in those middle innings, kept
- 2:50Speaker 1: guys off the bases and waited for something. Abner Uribe
- 2:53Speaker 1: came in and logged two innings without allowing a run,
- 2:56Speaker 1: which was massive because the bullpen was being stretched thin.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You could see Pat Murphy calculating on that bench, thinking
- 3:02Speaker 1: through who he had left, who could give one more,
- 3:05Speaker 1: who was already cooked. That calculus is what made everything
- 3:08Speaker 1: that followed so painful. The 12th inning starts, and this
- 3:12Speaker 1: is the moment we'll talk about for years. Cooper Pratt
- 3:15Speaker 1: steps in against Ian Seymour and absolutely demolishes a 396-foot
- 3:20Speaker 1: solo bomb to left center field. The shortstop who hit
- 3:23Speaker 1: just three home runs during the entire regular season gave
- 3:26Speaker 1: us a 3-2 lead in Game 4 of the World Series.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Four hits tonight. The first rookie in Major League history
- 3:34Speaker 1: to record four hits in a potential World Series clincher.
- 3:37Speaker 1: You can't write that stuff. After that, Jackson Shurio doubled
- 3:41Speaker 1: with two out before Jake Bowers popped out to end
- 3:44Speaker 1: the frame. We had the lead. We actually had it.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And then the bottom half started and I need you
- 3:49Speaker 1: all to understand the situation we were in. Pat Murphy
- 3:53Speaker 1: goes to Antonio Sensatella to close it out, which is
- 3:56Speaker 1: a reasonable call given the exhaustion. Caminero gets hit up.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And on the next play, Joey Ortiz makes a throwing
- 4:03Speaker 1: error across the diamond trying to get him at first.
- 4:06Speaker 1: That brings in Shane Drohan, a guy who had basically
- 4:09Speaker 1: nothing left to give because the rest of the bullpen
- 4:11Speaker 1: was tapped out. And Drohan got four straight singles and
- 4:14Speaker 1: didn't record a single out. Their Lucas single tied it
- 4:18Speaker 1: at three. Then the bases loaded with nobody out and
- 4:21Speaker 1: Ben Williamson walked off the raise on a ground ball
- 4:23Speaker 1: to Sal Freelick that scored Nick Fortes. Four singles, no outs,
- 4:27Speaker 1: and the whole thing unraveled in about 90 seconds. I'm
- 4:31Speaker 1: not going to hang this entirely on Drohan. The reality
- 4:34Speaker 1: is that he was the guy available because we'd spent
- 4:36Speaker 1: every good reliever in a 4 hour and 20 minute game,
- 4:39Speaker 1: but it hurts to watch. Here's where I land. Cooper
- 4:43Speaker 1: Pratt is a star, we know it now, and the
- 4:45Speaker 1: baseball world knows it too. David Hamilton has ice water
- 4:49Speaker 1: in his veins. The pitching staff kept us alive for
- 4:52Speaker 1: 11 innings before the tank hit empty, and we are
- 4:55Speaker 1: still up 3-1 in a World Series. The Rays just
- 4:58Speaker 1: gave Tampa one of the best nights they've had in years,
- 5:01Speaker 1: and good for them. But the narrative heading into Game
- 5:05Speaker 1: 5 is ours to control. We get to play at
- 5:07Speaker 1: home in front of our people, and all we need
- 5:09Speaker 1: is one more win, one more game to lift the trophy.
- 5:12Speaker 1: So tonight stings, but take a breath, pour yourself something cold,
- 5:16Speaker 1: and remember that you've got a one-run lead in the
- 5:19Speaker 1: bottom of the 12th with the home crowd behind you
- 5:22Speaker 1: coming Tuesday. It's not over. It's actually about to get beautiful.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I'm Mike Michelson, and I'll see you in Milwaukee.
