Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Air New Zealand isn't making me proud
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Reading the New Zealand results yesterday, did you see those?
- 0:02Speaker 1: Bit depressing? Even more so was the commentary afterwards. Profit down,
- 0:07Speaker 1: demand down, costs on the March. Capacity is still buggered
- 0:11Speaker 1: by those engine problems and the real punch in the
- 0:13Speaker 1: guts for our national carrier. They won't be back to
- 0:17Speaker 1: full capacity for the best part of two more years.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Foreurn confirmed that last night, which is sad. It looks
- 0:25Speaker 1: like a bit of a wounded, bruised, not in full
- 0:28Speaker 1: health national carrier, doesn't it. And there's something about your
- 0:31Speaker 1: national carrier that should make you feel a little bit proud.
- 0:34Speaker 1: You know, when you've been overseas and you've traveled the
- 0:37Speaker 1: world and you've not seen a fellow New Zealander in
- 0:41Speaker 1: ages a long time, jumping on board that last leg home,
- 0:44Speaker 1: hearing the accent the comfort of Kiwi service makes you
- 0:48Speaker 1: feel a bit proud. So you should be proud of
- 0:50Speaker 1: your national carrier. Foreun has had a rough time in
- 0:53Speaker 1: the job, There's no doubt about that. Border closures, lockdowns.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Is there anything worse for the new boss of a
- 1:00Speaker 1: global airline? I don't think so. The Rolls Royce, the
- 1:04Speaker 1: other engine issues again not really his fault. You can
- 1:07Speaker 1: plan around that stuff. But even those plans have had
- 1:10Speaker 1: to change because the engine makers there are timelines for
- 1:13Speaker 1: the fix it jobs. They've been pushed out. And then
- 1:16Speaker 1: there's the prices. All we love to whine about the prices,
- 1:20Speaker 1: including me, and I'll get one on record. Return weekend
- 1:23Speaker 1: flight from Auckland to Wellington for the middle of next
- 1:26Speaker 1: month will cost you close to eight hundred bucks return
- 1:30Speaker 1: Auckland Wellington. I mean to be fair, it's only a
- 1:33Speaker 1: couple of weeks away. Still, let's wine and guess what.
- 1:37Speaker 1: There's going to be more of this to come, an
- 1:39Speaker 1: extra five percent in the near future of price increases
- 1:43Speaker 1: and as forum hits the departure allounge to make way
- 1:46Speaker 1: for a new captain of our national treasure, if we'd
- 1:49Speaker 1: still call it that. The question is what would or
- 1:53Speaker 1: should he have done differently? Look at Quantis, that's a
- 1:56Speaker 1: bit of a mess I'd probably take in New Zealand
- 1:58Speaker 1: over Quantas right now, For all the faults and all
- 2:01Speaker 1: the complaints and all the price hikes, is there anything
- 2:05Speaker 1: anyone has suggested that could have fixed these problems while
- 2:08Speaker 1: not simultaneously sinking the business or worse, forcing it to
- 2:12Speaker 1: go once again. Cap in hand to the government for
- 2:14Speaker 1: another handout. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,
