- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to the Kenny Wallace Show
- 0:04brought to you by Jags, the leader in high performance
- 0:08aftermarket car parts. Remember to go to jags.com for
- 0:13everything you need to fix your vehicles up as the Herminator
- 0:18takes a break. It's sleeping pretty hard,
- 0:23snowing pretty hard here in St. Louis, MO.
- 0:26I'm about 17 miles South of the Arch.
- 0:29We're in Arnold, MO. Love my hometown, and it's
- 0:33Showtime. It's time for the Daytona 580°
- 0:38in Florida, 30° up here in Saint Louis, and it's sleeping and
- 0:42snowing outside my window. All right, everybody, let's
- 0:46bring you up to date. Let's let's tell you what's
- 0:49going on in Daytona. Let's give you the highlights of
- 0:51the Twin 150's or or as they call it, the duels.
- 0:57It used to be called the Twin 120 fives.
- 0:59A little history lesson here. It was always the Twin 120
- 1:03Fives. The Twin 120 Fives.
- 1:07Let's be clear, the front row is locked in all the time.
- 1:11When you qualify, the first two starting spots are locked in,
- 1:14right? So on the front row for the
- 1:17Daytona 500 is Joey Lagano on pole QuickTime and a surprise
- 1:25Michael McDowell front row outside in that good looking
- 1:28yellow loves truck stop car and that was a big surprise.
- 1:33That was a shock. Michael McDowell almost was on
- 1:36pole for the Daytona 500, but we have seen these upsets in past
- 1:41history. I I think Lloyd Allen once with
- 1:44the Hooters car was on the pole for the Daytona 500.
- 1:47That kind of shocked some people, but the Daytona 500 is
- 1:51this Sunday. The front row is set, Joey
- 1:55Logano on pole, Mike and McDowell, front row outside.
- 1:58All right, let's move ahead. Let's talk about Thursday night.
- 2:01It's called the Dual One 50s. They lengthened it.
- 2:05Like I said, it used to be the twin 120 fives, but they had to
- 2:09make pits that they they did not have to make pit stops.
- 2:12They can make it. So NASCAR said, well, we're
- 2:15going to make it longer that way.
- 2:17You have to make a pit stop. We don't want you to make it the
- 2:20whole way on no gas. We want pit stops.
- 2:22So NASCAR said we'll fix your butt.
- 2:25We'll call it the dual 150's. We're going to change it.
- 2:29So 150 miles they ran two of them on Thursday night and buddy
- 2:35NASCAR, I'm sorry to disappoint the fans that hate their life.
- 2:41I don't like NASCAR and that's why I watch it.
- 2:47I watched NASCAR so I can complain about it because I like
- 2:50talking crap. I'm sorry.
- 2:53I'm sorry. Both these dual one 50s were
- 2:56incredible. You did not know who was going
- 3:00to win until they came off of turn four, side by side, door
- 3:04handle to door handle, passing on the last corner for the win.
- 3:08And we had Jimmie Johnson battling out with JJ Yeley.
- 3:14We had a race for the win in the first duel and when we had a
- 3:17race for 15th spot, Jimmie Johnson and JJ Ellie to qualify
- 3:23for the Daytona 500. So it was drama All right.
- 3:27So the that herminator put us. These are two hundreds built by
- 3:32my buddy Greg Deathridge. Greg's got a what is it?
- 3:37Deathridge Optics. Check O Greg out.
- 3:40He got some good stuff. Going to give me a little
- 3:41cleaner here. Greg Deathridge right there, All
- 3:45right, Deffard certified opticians down there.
- 3:49Wichita Falls, TX. He's also the one that makes all
- 3:53the glasses for Jonathan Davenport and now Chris Madden,
- 3:57all the big boys in racing. So we already talked about the
- 4:03front row set. Legono McDowell.
- 4:07Our dual winners were Christopher Bell and Tyler
- 4:10Reddick. But the first dual was won by
- 4:13Tyler Reddick. And I got to tell you, how about
- 4:16you young kids? So Monster Energy Drink.
- 4:21They make a new hard tea so that it's called Nasty Beast.
- 4:27Nasty Beast is sponsoring Tyler Reddick and he wins the first
- 4:32duel and their commercials. Kick butt.
- 4:35Got some girls in bikinis dancing around the swimming pool
- 4:39and I'm like, oh boy, can't wait to look at this timeline.
- 4:43This is going to be edgy and good.
- 4:45I liked it. I'm a girl, Dad.
- 4:47I'm married with three daughters.
- 4:49Go girls. So Tyler Reddick, he's married.
- 4:53He's got a kid and Kurt Busch is there.
- 4:57You know Kurt's retired and he's playing part, you know, team not
- 5:04owner, but Kurt's all in right there at the Michael Jordan team
- 5:08with Danny Hamlin. He's a big Monster Energy drink
- 5:10guy. So this nasty beast is a hard
- 5:13tea. It's a liquor and I like it that
- 5:17Tyler Reddick made a last corner move going into Turn 3 coming to
- 5:21the checkered. And Tyler Reddick wins the race
- 5:24in exciting fashion. The first duel and he and he
- 5:28looks in his mirror and he goes. I wonder how Jimmie Johnson
- 5:31doing. Is he going to miss the race?
- 5:33Is our seven time champion, Jimmie Johnson.
- 5:36After a three-year, two year layoff, Jimmie Johnson makes the
- 5:40Daytona 500 coming off of turn 4 passes.
- 5:44JJ Galey. So that first duel it was, it
- 5:49was exciting. It was wild.
- 5:51Let's look at my notes here. Yep.
- 5:53All right, that's it. It was big.
- 5:55It was exciting. So let's go to the second duel.
- 6:01Terminator got the notes. It's wild.
- 6:05The the second duel won't take me a little time because, buddy,
- 6:08they wrecked their butts off Dual #2.
- 6:13All right, our winner is Christopher Bell.
- 6:16Austin Sindrich was second and we're going down the back
- 6:21straightaway. And Toyota's right where they
- 6:22want to be. And Christopher Bell makes a
- 6:27move on Denny Hamlin. And listen, I'm sorry.
- 6:32I'm sorry to disappoint you. Denny Hamlin just keeps getting
- 6:36better. He, you know, So what, He don't
- 6:38win a championship. This guy wins a lot of races
- 6:41he's in. He's going to be in the NASCAR
- 6:43Hall of Fame. He runs that mouth.
- 6:45We love it. Denny Hamlin has already said, I
- 6:48like talking crap. It's part of football.
- 6:51It's part of, you know, the NFL is part of sports.
- 6:55So Denny Hamlin loves juking and jiving with you.
- 6:59He knows the more he jukes, you guys are going to jive and he
- 7:03loves it. So Danny Hamlin's there.
- 7:06He's going for the win again. You know he's already won the
- 7:10Daytona 500 multiple times. So Danny Hamlin is a multiple
- 7:15time Daytona 500 winner and he cannot hold off Christopher
- 7:19Bell. Christopher Bell wins the second
- 7:21duel and as Larry McReynolds say, oh, and by the way, they
- 7:28had the big one. Let's go back with about 810
- 7:32laps to go. They're coming through the trial
- 7:35or they're running 210 mile hour and buddy, OK, that's a joke.
- 7:39They're not running 210 but they're digging.
- 7:43You know the roof flaps are popping up and down and you
- 7:46know, I I ran a lot of races at at at the speedways Daytona and
- 7:49Talladega and and you can always tell when things are getting
- 7:53ready, get serious aerodynamically because those
- 7:55roof flaps that they have we have on the front of our roofs,
- 7:58they start going. When you see those roof flaps
- 8:01start to do this, it means it means there's turbulent air
- 8:05ahead. So that's what happened.
- 8:07And William Byron and and all the boys they it was Ryan
- 8:14Blaney, William Byron, side by side, kind of moving 1/2 the
- 8:18lane here or there, but Brad Keselowski pops cow Bush in the
- 8:24butt, gives him a run. Kyle Busch says I don't want
- 8:28this run because I'm going to hit William Byron in the ass.
- 8:32But you can't help it because see Brad Keselowski.
- 8:36It's hard to see through Kyle Busch's car.
- 8:39So here's Kyle Busch dragging the brake.
- 8:43Whoa, whoa. And he can't help it.
- 8:46Kyle Busch tries to go right, but he inevitably hits.
- 8:50He hits William Byron in the ass, runs him in to our champion
- 8:56last year, which is Ryan Blaney and Buddy Ryan Blaney hits that
- 9:00wall hard. I'm like, Oh no, I hope he's all
- 9:02right. Everybody's OK And I mean, they
- 9:06all pile in. And when I mean, they all pile
- 9:09in. I mean 10 cars at least.
- 9:11So you got to remember, they split the duals in half.
- 9:14You know, what is it? You know, 20 and 20.
- 9:18You know that's 40. So when you knockout 10, you
- 9:20only got like 12 cars left in the whole damn race.
- 9:23Some were able to walk away with damage, but that second duel was
- 9:29crazy. Now, by the way, here we go
- 9:33again. You know, we got a race in the
- 9:35back for 15th spot and and you're not going to believe who
- 9:39it was. It was Cosgoralla.
- 9:42What a name, right? Cosgoralla against BJ McLeod.
- 9:47Now you're thinking oh, BJ, you know guys got a little weight on
- 9:51him. You know doesn't have a very big
- 9:54operation and you know we need, we need to do a show on BJ
- 9:57McLeod. I thought this guy would be in
- 10:00and out of the sport. I don't know where he gets his
- 10:03money. I don't know where he makes it.
- 10:05The car is black. There's not a damn name on it.
- 10:07BJ McLeod does something respond right here.
- 10:11Tell me where he makes all his money because in that in that
- 10:15second duel cause growls up there and and that's a front row
- 10:20motorsport. So Koz Grotto's teammate is
- 10:23Michael McDowell and Michael McDowell is starting front row
- 10:26outside of the Daytona 500. Now here's what's crazy.
- 10:31Koz Grotto's running third or fourth with three to go and
- 10:36you're thinking Koz Grotto's looking good but they start
- 10:39juking and jiving. Koz Grotto gets out of this
- 10:43draft, falls to last on the last lap.
- 10:47There's BJ McLeod. You know, the car with no name,
- 10:52number 78. You know, BJ's got the hat on
- 10:55backwards. He does the good interviews.
- 10:57I like both of them. And here's Cosgrola fighting for
- 11:01his life. They are side by side coming off
- 11:04a Turn 4 to make the Daytona 500.
- 11:08And boy, Cosgrola just makes it so in both duels, right?
- 11:14Jimmy Johnson makes it by a car length, and in the second duel,
- 11:19Koz Grala makes it by car length.
- 11:21And I mean, you're, you're looking at who's going to win
- 11:23the race and you're looking in the back of the back to see,
- 11:27damn, it's snowing Hard Out Here.
- 11:29So these, these dual one 50s, they did not disappoint.
- 11:35I'm sorry. I know, I know you're.
- 11:38I know you. You love being miserable.
- 11:40I know you hate the sport, but it's a game for you, right?
- 11:43You'll want to watch the sport so you can talk bad about it,
- 11:47but you can't. I win, you guys lose.
- 11:51These dual 150's were absolutely off the charts.
- 11:55I just told you why and it was racing at the front of the pack
- 11:59to see who wins. It was racing in the back of the
- 12:02pack. See who's going to make the
- 12:03Daytona 500? Well, if you made it this far,
- 12:10that's what my buddy Mitchell Stapleton does, who's got a
- 12:13couple 100,000 subscribers. Mitchell's my buddy.
- 12:17He he knows that you all got short span minds like I do.
- 12:20I'm like, I'm still watching. I'm still listening.
- 12:24You get a bonus. If you've made it this far, I'm
- 12:27going to give you some more great information about our
- 12:30sport. All right, let's wrap that up.
- 12:34So I told you who's on the front row?
- 12:36And so 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th that all lines up for the Daytona 500
- 12:42on the way you finished in your dual 150's.
- 12:46Let's say it again, let's say it slow.
- 12:48The front row for the Daytona 500 cars that qualified first
- 12:52second. Joey Logano QuickTime, Michael
- 12:56McDowell second. That got locked in on the two
- 12:59fastest speeds. The reason we run the dual
- 13:02150's. So we take the finishing order
- 13:04of the first dual, the finishing order of the second dual, and
- 13:08that lines up the inside row and the second duel lines up the
- 13:12outside. And that, my friend, is the
- 13:14start in the lineup of the Daytona 500.
- 13:18No Provisionals because remember, it's a franchise,
- 13:22you're automatically locked in. So there's no Provisionals.
- 13:25Franchise is the keyword here. There's no Provisionals because
- 13:28you are franchise. Now.
- 13:30If you are franchise, you are locked in every single race.
- 13:35But so it's not communism. They got to make it available
- 13:38for some people to make the race so you don't get a lawsuit.
- 13:41So that's where the extra spots come in.
- 13:44And NASCAR was smart doing that. That's why Jimmie Johnson and
- 13:49Kyle's Growler were able to race their way in and make the race.
- 13:54OK, let's talk about the garage area.
- 13:58This is breaking news in the garage area.
- 14:00NASCAR is changing in leaps and bounds.
- 14:02I like it. They're into the entertainment
- 14:05business now. NASCAR has always been
- 14:08entertainment, but it's always been in the suites.
- 14:11So NASCAR is taking something out of the playbook of the NHRA.
- 14:17When you go into the NASCAR garage area now and you are with
- 14:21the sponsor or you are with the team, you're going to get a
- 14:24little extra pass. And NASCAR has split the truck
- 14:29and trailers and right here in the middle is an unbelievable
- 14:34hospitality venue. So if you're at Henrik
- 14:37Motorsport and they got four cars, you got an incredible palm
- 14:43trees and beautiful couches and a beer or some liquor.
- 14:50And you're able right there in the garage area and here comes,
- 14:55you know, Dale Junior or here comes, you know, Chase Ellen.
- 14:58They sit on the couch with you and they talk to the CEO.
- 15:03You don't have to go make a hospitality appearance.
- 15:06They can come right down to the garage area.
- 15:08So you're going to see this, you're going to look at it,
- 15:11you're going to go, what am I looking at?
- 15:13So inside the garage area now in between those teams, it could be
- 15:18Rick Hendrick, Hendrick Motorsport, it could be Gibbs.
- 15:21And NASCAR has allowed this spacing in between these big
- 15:25tractor trailers. So let's say Chase Elliott's
- 15:29hauler here, the number 9. And then let's say right here
- 15:32is, you know, Alex Bowman, another Henrik driver.
- 15:36They leave a spot right here. And boy, this is palm trees and
- 15:41couches, and it's awesome. All right, let's put that to
- 15:45bed. Here's the other one.
- 15:49LED lights, a rolling billboard on the front of the pit boxes.
- 15:54So you're in the grandstands. You're, you're a fan.
- 15:57You paid $100 for your ticket and you're looking on Pit Rd.
- 16:01and these enormous pit boxes, right?
- 16:04They're big because the crew chief, they're here.
- 16:07And then here's the wife. And then right here is the
- 16:09sponsors. These pit boxes are
- 16:12entertainment. Hello, CEO.
- 16:14Hello, wife of CEO. You can sit on our pit box and
- 16:18watch us call the race. This is a big deal.
- 16:22It's entertainment. You're right in the game and on
- 16:25the front of the pit box. This year, 2024 is the
- 16:30incredible. I mean it's like 5 TV screens
- 16:34LED and this is a rolling billboard Now respond right
- 16:39here. Is NASCAR going to limit this
- 16:43rolling billboard? Can you only run it before the
- 16:47race? Do they shut it off during the
- 16:49race? Can you can you roll some of
- 16:52your sponsors that are not approved by NASCAR?
- 16:56I haven't. I haven't looked at the rules.
- 16:57I haven't called Steve Phelps. I haven't called Mike Hilton.
- 17:01I didn't call Steve O'Donnell. Great idea.
- 17:04Maybe we'll have one of those on Kenny conversation.
- 17:06So are the new LEDTVS on the front of these big pit boxes or
- 17:14are you going to roll some sponsors by there?
- 17:16And the fan in less than 100,000 people at the OK, 20,000 people,
- 17:21are they going to see that? What is that sponsor?
- 17:24Does it say Nasty Beast? Does it say, you know AC Delco
- 17:30doesn't say Valvoline and does something slide by that NASCAR
- 17:34is not approved. Did you know you have to call
- 17:38NASCAR and get your sponsors approved?
- 17:40You cannot go get a sponsor and just put it on your car.
- 17:44You have to call NASCAR and go, can I have this sponsor?
- 17:47And then NASCAR goes, yes, it's a good sponsor.
- 17:51It doesn't go against our guidelines.
- 17:53And yes, you can have that sponsor or no, you cannot have
- 17:57that sponsor. It's a drug.
- 17:59It's we don't like it. So all right, everybody, there
- 18:05you go. That's, that's the twin 150
- 18:09duels. I gave you the starting lineup.
- 18:11I gave you what happened and I also gave you a little bit with
- 18:15the new garage area and the new LED rolling TV screens on the
- 18:22pit boxes. So I'm excited.
- 18:25I'm excited. The Daytona 500, we're all going
- 18:28to be watching. And remember, this is not about
- 18:32going fast. This is not about motorcycles
- 18:36doing flips. This is not about shock and awe.
- 18:39The Daytona 500 is our Super Bowl.
- 18:43It is about man and machine. Can your car make the distance?
- 18:49Can you not wreck out? And it always comes down to the
- 18:53very end, the Daytona 500, NASCAR's greatest race.
- 18:59All right everybody, Remember we are in podcast form.
- 19:03You're going to want to tune into iTunes or Spotify.
- 19:06We got it going on. You can listen to us and please
- 19:11subscribe if you're right here on on YouTube until the next
- 19:16Kenny Wallace show. And I'm sure it will be my wrap
- 19:19up for the Daytona 500. NASCAR is back.
- 19:23We're rolling every week. Until the next time.
- 19:27Goodbye everybody.
