- 0:11Hello friends, Sean here. Welcome to a chapter of a day
- 0:16Bible reading where we are entering a new season.
- 0:20Yeah, we've been an Advent for a while, but we are now having
- 0:24moved on from reading through Isaiah.
- 0:26We find ourselves with just a few more days to go until
- 0:30Christmas and so we are going to read the 1st couple of chapters
- 0:34of Matthew before our Psalm this week and then next week we will
- 0:39celebrate Christmas together on Monday with a reading from Luke.
- 0:43How good is that? Oh, very exciting.
- 0:46Now today we are going to be reading the first chapter of
- 0:50Matthew which is the one with all the genealogy.
- 0:54This book was written for a Jewish audience to convince them
- 0:58that yes, Jesus was actually the Messiah they were waiting for.
- 1:02And this might sound strange, but as I have been coming up to
- 1:07this Christmas, this has been the chapter, this genealogy has
- 1:11been the thing that has been bouncing around in my head
- 1:14giving me such joy And you might say, are you completely bananas?
- 1:18How is that so? And so begat so and so begat so
- 1:22and so. Any help at all?
- 1:25Well, you and me, friend, we are part of a very, very big story.
- 1:30And for me, listening to this list of generations, 42
- 1:36generations talks to the fact that Jesus being born was God's
- 1:43plan all along. We are part of this incredibly
- 1:48big story, this big story in which God saves us.
- 1:52And we are now still living part of that big story many
- 1:56generations later. And when things seem a little
- 1:59bit pointless or hopeless or despairing, I think of this
- 2:04chapter and this is evidence that God is a God of big plans.
- 2:10And there is an enormous meta narrative in which my life fits.
- 2:14And this is a narrative of hope and a narrative of love and a
- 2:18narrative of saving. So it is with great joy that I
- 2:22will tackle all of these names with you this morning, this
- 2:25afternoon, or this evening whenever you're listening.
- 2:28And we will read through them together to hear that this God's
- 2:33action to save humanity, his beloved people, has been His
- 2:38plan all along. So join me, friends, as we read
- 2:41together. Matthew, Chapter one.

- 3:14Tamar. Perez was the father of Hezron.
- 3:17Hezron was the father of Ram. Ram was the father of Eminidab.
- 3:23Eminidab was the father of Nashon.
- 3:26Nashon was the father of Salmon. Salmon was the father of Boaz,
- 3:31whose mother was Rahab. Boaz was the father of Obed,
- 3:36whose mother was Ruth. Obed was the father of Jesse.
- 3:41Jesse was the father of King David.
- 3:44David was the father of Solomon, whose mother was Bathsheba, the
- 3:48widow of Uriah. Solomon was the father of
- 3:51Rehoboam. Rehoboam was the father of
- 3:55Abuja. Abuja was the father of ASA.
- 3:59ASA was the father of Jehoshaphat.
- 4:02Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram.
- 4:05Jehoram was the father of Uzziah.
- 4:07Uzziah was the father of Jotham. Jotham was the father of Ahaz.
- 4:13Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah. Hezekiah was the father of
- 4:18Manasseh. Manasseh was the father of Amon.
- 4:23Amon was the father of Josiah. Josiah was the father of
- 4:27Jehoiakin and his brothers, born at the time of the exile to
- 4:31Babylon after the Babylonian exile.
- 4:35Jehoiakin was the father of Shealtiel.
- 4:38Shealtiel was the father of Zerubabel.
- 4:41Zerubabel was the father of Abiud.
- 4:44Abiud was the father of Eliakim. Eliakim was the father of Azor.
- 4:50Azor was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Akim was
- 4:56the father of Eliad. Eliad was the father of Eliezer.
- 5:01Eliezer was the father of Matan. Matan was the father of Jacob.
- 5:08Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.
- 5:12Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is called the Messiah.
- 5:17All those listed above include 14 generations from Abraham to
- 5:22David, 14 from David to the Babylonian Exile, and 14 from
- 5:27the Babylonian exile to the Messiah.
- 5:32This is how Jesus the Messiah was born.
- 5:35His mother Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph, but before
- 5:40the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she
- 5:43became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 5:46Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not
- 5:50want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the
- 5:53engagement quietly. As he considered this, an Angel
- 5:58of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.
- 6:01Joseph, son of David the Angel, said, Do not be afraid to take
- 6:06Mary as your wife, for the child within her was conceived by the
- 6:10Holy Spirit, and she will have a son.
- 6:14And you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from
- 6:19their sins. All of this occurred to fulfill
- 6:23the Lord's message through his prophet.
- 6:25Look, the virgin will conceive a child, she will give birth to a
- 6:30son, and they will call him Emmanuel, which means God is
- 6:34with us. When Joseph woke up, he did as
- 6:39the Angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife.
- 6:43But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son
- 6:46was born, and Joseph named him Jesus.
- 7:02Father, you have loved us for such a long time.
- 7:06Through countless generations, you have loved us.
- 7:10You have planned to save us and to bring us close to you so that
- 7:17your arms open wide, can wrap themselves around us and you can
- 7:22be with us to show us your love for us, to show us who you are
- 7:28and what you are like through the person of Jesus.
- 7:32That is just the coolest news and it makes us so filled with
- 7:37joy that you would love us this much from the beginning of time,
- 7:44that your love would be there, working away in the background,
- 7:48bringing this plan to fruition. And so we celebrate that this
- 7:53Christmas, as we think of your Son born for us to enact your
- 8:00saving plan for us. We praise you and we worship
- 8:05You, our loving Father, in the name of Jesus.
- 8:09Amen.
