- 4:13Don Armstrong: Do you go by Christine?
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: Christy.
- 4:16Don Armstrong: Christy.
- 4:16Don Armstrong: Well, we got it all wrong all the way around.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: Both times.
- 4:19SPEAKER_03: Even after we wrote it down, we still got it wrong.
- 4:24Don Armstrong: This is an ongoing theme this morning, so my apologies.
- 4:27Jeff Dziekan: You can call him Bob.
- 4:28Jeff Dziekan: I'm Frank.
- 4:29Don Armstrong: You can call me anything.
- 4:30Jeff Dziekan: Anything you want.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Eddie Mo and Jack.
- 4:33Don Armstrong: There's that too, yeah, absolutely.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Curly down in the end.
- 4:36Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 4:36Don Armstrong: Christy Edelbrock is our guest, and I know that you know the uh last name for sure.
- 4:41Don Armstrong: And uh we were just having a little conversation where we're in the commercial break about uh where she lives today.
- 4:47Don Armstrong: Now, you know, Edelbrock and and most of the early hot rod stuff came out of Southern California, and she confirmed that she was born in Southern California, and I said to her, Where do you live?
- 4:59Don Armstrong: Here Granberry.
- 5:01Don Armstrong: So there's a Granberry.
- 5:02Don Armstrong: So uh so when did you move here?
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: Two years ago.
- 5:06Don Armstrong: Two years ago.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: I went I went straight from the Indy 500 to here and took possession of my property on the lake.
- 5:14Don Armstrong: Wow.
- 5:15Don Armstrong: Are you proud?
- 5:16Don Armstrong: Are you happy?
- 5:16Don Armstrong: Do you love it here?
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love it.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: You know, the small town vibe.
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: It's not that small though.
- 5:22Don Armstrong: It's not as small as people would think.
- 5:24Don Armstrong: Oh, I've never heard of Granberry.
- 5:26Don Armstrong: Well, it's up there.
- 5:27Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: It's a secret.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, right.
- 5:29Don Armstrong: And if you want to go to Neiman Marcus, you know, Dallas Fort Worth is just up the road.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: It's not too far.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:35Don Armstrong: So uh a couple of years that you've lived here, and um I assume that you're somehow still affiliated with the Edelbrock Corporation.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 5:45Don Armstrong: Well, explain that to me.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Well, from my dad, we just had um the ninth anniversary of his passing a couple days ago.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: So um you know the recession of 08 and 09 was very difficult on anything automotive.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Yes because of the big three and the TARP money and all of that.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: And uh banks wanted out of everything automotive, no matter what it was.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: And you know, the recession pretty much tanked business.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: And so at the time we had never we had never asked the banks for any kind of money ever in our history.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: And uh they wouldn't support us.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: So we had to start looking for partners, lots of consultants, all that.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: You know, it was a change for a lot.
- 6:33Don Armstrong: Because you inherited the company from your dad.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Well, my dad passed seven or eight years ago, nine years ago.
- 6:41Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: And so at the time of his passing, that's when it changed hands.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 6:47Don Armstrong: Oh, I see.
- 6:48Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 6:48Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 6:49Don Armstrong: So so are you are you obviously affiliated by name.
- 6:53Don Armstrong: Are you affiliated at all with the company anymore?
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Well, I work with the company, you know, to uh so you're the you're the yeah, the ambassador, you know, press and the the Sure.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: There's not many people blessed to have the last name Edel Barack.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, I do what I can to support.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I've been in this ever since I was little, little.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: You know, my parents took us everywhere when we were young.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: The US Nationals, pim you know, the Pomona drag races, you know, SEMA shows.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: I remember being, you know, this high and looking up at adults and cocktail parties and going, What do I say to these people?
- 7:32Don Armstrong: Sure.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: You know, so it was uh always a family business.
- 7:36Don Armstrong: So when you were when you were that young, your dad was still alive, would did he ever explain to you and and and school you on exactly what a manifold is?
- 7:47Don Armstrong: I assume that he did.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: Well, a manifold was pretty easy to figure out compared to other products or component parts.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: Uh we built two aluminum foundries in San Yacento.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: I worked at the first one uh that we built, the Green Sandcast Foundry for ten years, figured all that out.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: I knew nothing about the foundry business.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: I I I was uh competing in show jumping, Olympic show show jumping before that and had uh my own business.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: And so then I moved to corporate in Torrance.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: That's where our manufacturing facilities were, and corporate offices and that.
- 8:27Don Armstrong: And it's a very industrial area, isn't it, Torrance?
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Kind of, but now it's uh the the homes around where our our facility used to be are over a million dollars.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: That doesn't surprise me, yeah.
- 8:39Jeff Dziekan: Well the industry brought it in, obviously.
- 8:41Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: So my dad had a tendency of putting me in places that there were issues and he needed help, and so I kind of became like the fixer, you know, shooter, yeah.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Running to the flames, and um because I grew up with we had a lot of long-term employees, that it was their one and only job, and they watched me grow up.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: So when we were working together, they'd be like, No, I'm not gonna tell you what that is, that keeper, you know.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: The keeper, yes.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: They'd have all these little nicknames and things.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: So I'd go out to the shop, get a keeper, figure out what it did.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: I taught myself how to read blueprints.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: Wow, you know, because that is awesome.
- 9:25Don Armstrong: What a great story.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Oh, I you know, from soup to nuts, I basically taught myself, you know.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: I asked my dad when when I was a teenager, I said, I'm gonna go work in the dining room.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Perfect.
- 9:37SPEAKER_01: And he said, No.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Well, I said, What do you mean, no?
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: You don't need to know anything about that.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: I said, Why not?
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Learn it all.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: So, girls, women, get out there, bug your man, go to auto shop.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: There's great auto shop at Granbury High, you know, get involved, get your hands dirty.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: You this is an industry that is a lot of fun, it can take you a lot of places, you meet great people, great stories, and to me, when you understand the the history, you know, it helps you understand your path forward.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: You know, and and you develop a passion like this that can stick with you for life and it can lead you to places that you may never ever have had the opportunity to be involved in.
- 10:28Jeff Dziekan: Well said.
- 10:28Jeff Dziekan: You know, absolutely and we we talk with a lot of folks through through the educational systems where you know the shops and uh the dealerships and uh what you can do, all the avenues you have out of school or maybe taking some co-op classes and interning.
- 10:43Jeff Dziekan: So we do know those kind of uh processes and things, but to hear it actually from someone to say that uh very well said.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: And don't be afraid to ask questions.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: No question is, you know, too small, too big.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: Uh get out there and teach yourself.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: You know, my grandfather was self-taught.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: Uh the family business in Eldora, Kansas was a grocery store, and the grocery store burnt down.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: My grandfather was 14, so he and his older brother went to California, the land of opportunity, to make money to send back to the family to rebuild the grocery store.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: And so my grandfather just started reading books, you know, playing around, tinkering, all of that, just like Henry Ford.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: You put a tool in someone's hand and look what happens, you know?
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: And two weeks before Pearl Harbor, my grandfather went 122 miles an hour on the dry lake bedroom.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and people were just like, What?
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Amazed.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: It was his daily driver that he flat toed out there.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: He didn't even have a truck, nothing.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: And you know, streamlined the whole thing.
- 11:55SPEAKER_01: No oil pump.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: You can see them all crouched down, you know, one hand on the steering wheel, the other hand through the wheel, working the pump.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: And that's what started it all.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: And then post-war, you know, the hot rod era started to flourish.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: And, you know, racing midgets from San Diego to Santa Barbara five days a week.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: And, you know, later, um people would come up to me and say, you know, if your grandfather hadn't have done what he did, hot rotting wouldn't be what it is.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: That's exactly true.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: That's very true.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: And the first time someone told me that, I almost fell over.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: I'm like, what?
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: What are you talking about?
- 12:34Jeff Dziekan: And you look around, you just look around this event, you know, how many of the Edelbrock products are on these vehicles?
- 12:40Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 12:40Jeff Dziekan: Probably many on just one.
- 12:43SPEAKER_03: And not only that, but the influence of those Edelbrock products early on that that led to other people building.
- 12:49SPEAKER_03: And the copycats sort of.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: Well, the copycats, but still it's just part of the industry has grown because of people like your grandfather.
- 12:56Don Armstrong: And let's not forget that that that we started off with the low rise, you know, two-barrel carburetor uh intake manifold, and you know, I'm gonna put a four four barrel on it.
- 13:06Don Armstrong: And then and then it wasn't enough.
- 13:08Don Armstrong: Let's put a high rise on it.
- 13:10Don Armstrong: So it was this constant grocery store of manifolds for me anyway.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: New product.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: We were super big on new product, you know, very foot forward in that entity there.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: And um, you know, I mean, we're older than NASCAR, NHRA, Hot Rod Magazine, all of that.
- 13:29Don Armstrong: And influenced all of those.
- 13:30Don Armstrong: All of it.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: We were the only ones with a dyno, you know, so the teams would come actually to Southern California, work with our guys on the dyno.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: Murray Jensen, a guy that worked with my grandfather.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: He he handled all the NASCAR guys, and you know, I mean, they had a hell of a good time hanging out in our place.
- 13:49Don Armstrong: Sure.
- 13:50Don Armstrong: I'm sure.
- 13:50Don Armstrong: I can only imagine.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: And I didn't get to go in the dino room, darn it.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: I said, Dad, what if uh you my tire goes flat?
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Well, just call us.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: I'm like, no, I want to know how to change the tire.
- 14:03Don Armstrong: I figured it out later in life, you know, but I'm sure that I'm sure that he was a helping hand in a lot of your projects that you had when you're going through this educational, self-educational stuff that you were going through.
- 14:15Don Armstrong: Dad, how do you do this or why did you do that?
- 14:17Don Armstrong: And I would imagine that he would explain.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: My dad was just a great storyteller, you know.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, just so many memories of all the years experiences.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: And, you know, uh Vic Sr.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: was not an easy guy.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: You know, he passed away at 49.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: And he and Katie, you know, my grandmother, um, you know, depression, you know, lived through all of that.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: Grandma Katie, she worked for a family in Beverly Hills as a as a maid and lived with the family four days a week.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Went home on Friday night, and she saved her money from that job to buy the very first pattern for the flathead.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: So it was totally grassroots, you know, and that's that's the whole family.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: No, totally.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: That's the way we grew up, you know.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: We were working every summer.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Um, when we were little, it was really cool because we charged for catalogs back in the day.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: And people would write letters in.
- 15:23Don Armstrong: I forgot that.
- 15:24Don Armstrong: You used to charge for catalogs.
- 15:26Don Armstrong: Yes.
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Why not?
- 15:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: But that w that's the way that it was.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: And and people would tape four quarters across the bottom of the letter, you know.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: So here we are with my grandmother.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: You know, we take the quarters off, we stuff the envelopes and everything, and all our friends are at the beach, you know.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: But you know, I mean, I think I think America needs more of that today.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: You know, take your kid to work, show 'em your harb hobby, get 'em involved, you know.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: Social media is so toxic.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, do something with your children.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: And yeah.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Do you have children?
- 16:00Don Armstrong: Sorry, Jeff.
- 16:01Don Armstrong: You have children?
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Yes, I do.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: And how old are they now?
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: I have an amazing son who is in the horse business that I was in, show jumping.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: And uh he runs a training and sales barn in our property in Temecula, California.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: And he is now uh in Europe at the south of France, uh, showing there with uh one of his top clients, which I'm extremely jealous.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I got to compete in Germany and Holland for a a bit, but nothing like the south of France.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he didn't need any help.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you couldn't talk about it.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Well, I just couldn't quite figure out how to get there and when, you know.
- 16:39Jeff Dziekan: I think time schedules and things.
- 16:41Jeff Dziekan: But you talked about the education and you know, going out there and doing that like you just spoke.
- 16:45Jeff Dziekan: Now the big thing is not going to college, taking up a trade, uh making starting a business.
- 16:51Jeff Dziekan: So that's kind of the talk going on now in this twenty-first century for these young folks.
- 16:56Jeff Dziekan: Uh, but that's also good.
- 16:58Jeff Dziekan: Uh good point to make because I got a granddaughter that wants to be a nurse.
- 17:01Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, that you do require college for that.
- 17:04Jeff Dziekan: Uh but if you want to have somebody that wants to work on a car, well then you have to get into the automotive side of it.
- 17:09Jeff Dziekan: Not necessarily college, but there's other avenues you can do.
- 17:12Jeff Dziekan: So yeah, I I agree with that.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: What keeps some of the young people of getting into automotive is you know, they don't want to work at a dealership where you just plug it into the diagnostic.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: You know, because that's not a DLB, yeah.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: And so, you know, we've got Grand Bury High is a great automotive program, you know, all all this passion here.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: And so what I share is just, you know, get some passionate about something.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: And you know, get your hands dirty and start something small and stay under the radar.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: You don't need to be a big, big company, you know?
- 17:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but uh that's back to the social media thing.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: It's got these younger kids so trained that that's that's the important part.
- 17:56SPEAKER_03: Well, it's 20 years ago it was nothing.
- 17:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: Have them come to you.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Social media is toxic.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: I think we need to work hard to move that, you know, to the past.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: It has some good benefits, but not all the time.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: You know, we don't need to advertise and market only on Facebook.
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:16Don Armstrong: I think that's a real Although we do love you, Facebook, for taking this show live right now.
- 18:22Don Armstrong: There is that.
- 18:23Don Armstrong: So thank you for that aspect of it.
- 18:24Don Armstrong: Don't tune, don't turn it off, don't turn it off.
- 18:27Don Armstrong: We're not only on Facebook, there's other avenues too, but that's just one of the things that we're doing.
- 18:31Don Armstrong: You know the gist of the going in.
- 18:33Don Armstrong: That was a good point.
- 18:34Don Armstrong: Touche.
- 18:35Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 18:36SPEAKER_01: Well, listening is one thing.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:40Don Armstrong: That's true.
- 18:41Don Armstrong: And uh, you know, we've we've done okay over the years doing this show, so uh we're we're we're happy with that.
- 18:46Jeff Dziekan: Do you have any other projects going, personal projects that you're involved in with the company or not with the company right now.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: I'm busy.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: I have eleven acres on the north end of the lake.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 18:57Don Armstrong: You need somebody to mow it once in a while, or David's got a mower.
- 19:00Jeff Dziekan: David's got a lawnmower.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: I need lots of things, and and that's where I've seen the gaps and the opportunities here because you know this town is growing pretty quickly.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: And so now while the opportunities are out there still, you know, that's when you want to get involved to get your feet wet.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: And you don't need a college education to, you know, have a long business.
- 19:24Don Armstrong: But you know what the one the one thing is the personal satisfaction that you get out of success in whatever it is that you choose.
- 19:31Don Armstrong: And people forget that.
- 19:34Don Armstrong: And you know, it's kind of like rebuilding an engine and you crank it up for the first time and it runs, you go, see, all those weeks of work that I put in it, there it is.
- 19:44Don Armstrong: Yeah, and the naysayers.
- 19:46Don Armstrong: You can't you can't buy that, you have to do it yourself in this huge sense of right.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Well, no, you can't.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 19:53SPEAKER_01: And it's an accomplishment.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: And you know, so what does social media give you?
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, I want to be an influencer, you know, and and i is that an accomplishment, you know, because 90% of the product that they're promoting is not any good anyway.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I think honesty is the best policy.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: Hard work, don't be shy, go up and extend your hand and introduce yourself.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: You just never know who you're gonna meet.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: You know, we get to meet you.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Just like you're all looking so handsome.
- 20:28Don Armstrong: Listen, we we our shirts are all prepped and the knives and everything.
- 20:31Don Armstrong: Very impressed.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: Don't be talking about t-shirts and won't even recognize you by that, right?
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 20:43Don Armstrong: Uh well, it is uh an honor and pleasure uh to have you here and to meet you.
- 20:47Don Armstrong: Thank you very much.
- 20:48Don Armstrong: What a wonderful person.
- 20:49Don Armstrong: Uh yeah.
- 20:50Don Armstrong: And uh great history, great family, and uh uh I'm I'm impressed.
- 20:56Jeff Dziekan: You're not the type of person that gets tired of talking about it.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: No, no, because you know, I I spent so much time with my parents, with their friends when I was younger.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: I enjoyed hanging out with their friends more than I did people my own age.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: And so it was a lot of life skills that I learned because of that, because my parents took us to a lot of places when we were young.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: And again, that's an opportunity.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: And you know, I was shy as a kid, and you know, you just gotta learn to stand up for yourself, speak out, get involved, and and be passionate about what you're doing, no matter what it is.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: And you'll have multiple passions, which is even better.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: You know, charitable initiatives, all of that.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: Giving back is a very special thing.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: And rewarding.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: Very rewarding.
- 21:45Don Armstrong: Yep.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 21:46Don Armstrong: I spent uh twenty years as a volunteer at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and part of me uh is what you see today because of that.
- 21:55Don Armstrong: Right.
- 21:56Don Armstrong: And I would have never guessed that when I first started out.
- 22:00Don Armstrong: And for the party, baby.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 22:02Don Armstrong: But it evolved and it became a passion and uh you know, I will never forget it.
- 22:07Don Armstrong: And uh it that's what you're talking about.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: I started a a charitable car show uh years ago in uh old town torrents.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: I didn't have it around the company and our facilities.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Uh a young girl that I met, she wanted to get more into event planning and she had a small car show down in Redondo Beach.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: I brought one of our collection.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Poor thing, she had like twenty cars.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: And I said, Well, if you really want to do this, you know, let's get started and put something together.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: And uh my son was going to study table after school, you know, because I was working till all hours of the night and by the time I got home h he sure as didn't want to do his homework with me.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: And so the next the the first car show in Old Town Torrance, they gave us the whole town.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, just went off with a hit, thank goodness.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: Because the night before I was deathly afraid.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, people will think they that I know what I'm doing in regards to a car show.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: I have no idea.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: No idea.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: And so that was a huge hit.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: And then I moved it to the corporate location around a distribution center, and of course I had to have a party the night before.
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: So we had a big gala party, we had silent auctions, we had these Letterman jackets for Edelbrock, and Jay Leno's a good friend, and you know, Parnelli Jones, and so I got all these guys to sign this Letterman jacket.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: It sold for twenty thousand dollars.
- 23:43Don Armstrong: Way to go.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: And that went so well, we put up another one and we got everyone else that was you know, that was there to sign it again.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Ed Iskandarian, you know, Ed Pink, you know, all of the great guys.
- 23:57Jeff Dziekan: But that's getting back to the first original show that she wanted to do that you supported her.
- 24:02Jeff Dziekan: That's what it is.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: And it was over an eight year period we raised about six hundred thousand dollars for um a small school in the local area of Torrance uh that worked with complex challenged children.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: And nine out of ten of these kids were one step into institutional care because their parents had no idea what to do with them, you know?
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: And you know, autism, Asperger's, those children, they're nine times out of ten they're brilliant, genius level.
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: But it's just how you connect with them.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: Yes, and you know, our school systems, kids don't all learn the same way, you know.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: So things evolve and we need to, you know, give them what they need.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: So they say open them up to bring that out, stay inspired and want to move on and have a fruitful life, you know.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:59Don Armstrong: Good stuff.
- 25:00Don Armstrong: We're coming to your house after the show.
- 25:04SPEAKER_01: I have a beautiful I can only imagine, and uh we're coming.
- 25:08Don Armstrong: That's all there is to it.
- 25:09Don Armstrong: Okay, we just invited ourselves because we want to spend more time with you.
- 25:12Don Armstrong: Uh we've got another hour and a half to go on the show, and then we'll then we'll be over.
- 25:15Don Armstrong: But it's a true honor and pleasure to have you here.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, great.
- 25:18SPEAKER_01: Anytime.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: I'm happy to do it.
- 25:20Don Armstrong: So we'll be you'll be getting a phone call from us l sometime later in the year.
- 25:23SPEAKER_05: Do we turn left at the summit?
- 25:26Don Armstrong: Exactly.
- 25:27Don Armstrong: Christy Edelbrock, thanks again.

- 27:54Don Armstrong: We're gonna try to get out of here before it hits ninety-nine, but just saying.
- 27:57Jeff Dziekan: Well, we're fortunate there's a nice breeze coming through.
- 28:00Jeff Dziekan: We do have our little fans going on, but there is a nice breeze, so it is, and we're very thankful for that.
- 28:04Jeff Dziekan: No mosquitoes.
- 28:05Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 28:05Don Armstrong: There's no you'll notice that the lighting may not be perfect for us here, but I will tell you this it sure beats the heck sitting out in the sunshine.
- 28:12Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, it does.
- 28:13Jeff Dziekan: So there's that.
- 28:14Don Armstrong: All right, uh time now for Jeff's motor minute.
- 28:16Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, well, I we haven't talked about Formula One in depth, or I haven't, and I haven't talked about Cadillac and I used to not like Formula One.
- 28:23Jeff Dziekan: Well, I'm I've I'm I gotta hanker in because of the Cadillac.
- 28:27Jeff Dziekan: I got you.
- 28:27Jeff Dziekan: So Colton Herta uh is going to be driving the Cadillac.
- 28:31Jeff Dziekan: It's been announced uh just recently this past week.
- 28:33Jeff Dziekan: Colton Herda, he's part of the Indy Racing League.
- 28:37Jeff Dziekan: Uh he stepped into Formula One this past weekend in Barcelona, which we're gonna talk about during the racing calendar if we get there.
- 28:43Jeff Dziekan: Uh but he's gonna be running the Cadillac.
- 28:45Jeff Dziekan: He's a 26-year-old American kid.
- 28:47Jeff Dziekan: Uh walked away from his successful career at Indy and joined the high-tech and Formula Two racing with an I on Formula One.
- 28:54Jeff Dziekan: And that's like the NXT series in Indy or the ARCA.
- 28:58Jeff Dziekan: It's the lower series.
- 29:00Jeff Dziekan: Uh he's it's required to do that.
- 29:01Jeff Dziekan: So Herder will compete the first in the Cadillac this Friday, which was yesterday.
- 29:05Jeff Dziekan: He replaces Perez at the Circuit di Catalunya.
- 29:09Jeff Dziekan: Barcelona.
- 29:10Jeff Dziekan: Uh I practice you, let me know.
- 29:12Jeff Dziekan: I practice that word Catalunya.
- 29:14Jeff Dziekan: Catalunya.
- 29:14Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, Catalunya.
- 29:16Jeff Dziekan: Uh i that's my Spanish.
- 29:18Don Armstrong: Well, I think that that goes hand in hand with Cadillac, too.
- 29:20Jeff Dziekan: Go ahead.
- 29:21Jeff Dziekan: I speak Brazilian.
- 29:22Jeff Dziekan: Uh-huh.
- 29:23Jeff Dziekan: Uh Barcelonian.
- 29:24Jeff Dziekan: Uh so it's the Spanish Grand Prix, traditionally a favorite venue, the team.
- 29:27Jeff Dziekan: A little familiar with Brazilian, but not in that regard.
- 29:30Jeff Dziekan: Okay.
- 29:30Jeff Dziekan: Um how much does that cost you?
- 29:32Jeff Dziekan: Uh off of one of the uh FP1 sessions.
- 29:36Jeff Dziekan: I lost my place.
- 29:38Jeff Dziekan: He had a time in the simulator in Charlotte.
- 29:40Jeff Dziekan: He learned the track and the track procedures and you know, did all that on the off season.
- 29:44Jeff Dziekan: And he's working with the team in Silverstone, his team, the Cadillac team in Silverstone.
- 29:49Jeff Dziekan: Silverstone is in Europe.
- 29:50Jeff Dziekan: Yes.
- 29:51Jeff Dziekan: So very nice.
- 29:52Jeff Dziekan: They got a track and all the good stuff.
- 29:53Jeff Dziekan: So uh long story short, for the minute, uh he's testing, he's gonna run the formula FP2, he's getting into Cadillac, and the person he's replacing uh is not happy.
- 30:03Jeff Dziekan: Perez is not happy because he hadn't been performing, but you know, they they kind of put him aside.
- 30:09Jeff Dziekan: So there you go.
- 30:10Don Armstrong: They put him aside.
- 30:11Jeff Dziekan: They put him aside.
- 30:12Don Armstrong: So what happened to Jeff Seekett?
- 30:13Don Armstrong: Ah, they put me aside.
- 30:14Jeff Dziekan: They put me aside.
- 30:16Jeff Dziekan: He didn't perform well, and the Cadillac team says, okay, we're gonna take Herta, he's gonna take a place for the Did he ever win Indy?
- 30:22Don Armstrong: Herta?
- 30:23Don Armstrong: I know that he was successful in the series.
- 30:25Jeff Dziekan: He's won the kids won some races, uh, but he hasn't won any championships or anything.
- 30:29Jeff Dziekan: Interesting.
- 30:30Jeff Dziekan: He's a good driver.
- 30:30Don Armstrong: You know, I have made fun of Mitsubishi for quite some time on this show.
- 30:34Jeff Dziekan: Like forever.
- 30:35Don Armstrong: Like forever, since day one.
- 30:37Don Armstrong: Well, they're trying to pump it up.
- 30:40Don Armstrong: We're going to pump a U.S.
- 30:42Don Armstrong: uh Mitsubishi will enter the increasingly crowded U.S.
- 30:46Don Armstrong: mid-size pickup segment with a new truck sourced from Nissan as it tries to lift its sagging business by siphoning sales from the market leading Toyota Tacoma, Chevy Colorado, and Ford Ranger.
- 31:03Don Armstrong: The new entry will be built by Nissan at a U.S.
- 31:06Don Armstrong: factory, according to a person familiar with the plan.
- 31:08Don Armstrong: Mitsubishi did not detail a launch timeline, but Nissan Frontier mid-size pickup is expected to get a redesign around 2028 as part of Nissan's rollout of a new frame-based vehicle architecture that will underpin the Xterra SUV and other products built at its Canton, Mississippi plant.
- 31:29Don Armstrong: Pickup will be part of Mitsubishi's three-pronged plan for reviving the U.S.
- 31:34Don Armstrong: operations.
- 31:34Don Armstrong: And I will say this that they employ a lot of people, and as long as they don't build the car, they do great.
- 31:42Don Armstrong: I I don't remember the name of the vehicle that's been around for a while now, but when it first came out, I thought, well, dang, this is a pretty nice vehicle.
- 31:50Don Armstrong: We'll come to find out it was built by somebody else with the Mitsubishi name on it, and they put, you know, front and rear ends on it, and everything would look good.
- 31:56Jeff Dziekan: I got a feeling this one's gonna take off.
- 31:58Jeff Dziekan: It's probably gonna blow the doors off the ones that are out there.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: Perhaps they're gonna it's gonna have to if it's gonna take from the Tacoma and uh mid-sized GM rocks.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: I mean, even the Ford Ranger, the cities down there are buying Ford Rangers.
- 32:10Jeff Dziekan: It's gonna be like a Frankenstein type.
- 32:13Don Armstrong: Well, kind of.
- 32:14Don Armstrong: But they don't Frankenstein them like they used to.
- 32:17Jeff Dziekan: They're gonna take parts of this and parts of that, but uh, it's probably gonna take off, my my opinion.
- 32:22Don Armstrong: Let's hope.
- 32:22Jeff Dziekan: All right.
- 32:24Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 32:25Don Armstrong: All right, uh, the in-wheel time car talk show needs to take a break.
