Transcript
- 0:00Dillon: Star-hinged.
- 0:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Farhinged. We're gonna get.
- 0:03Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody! Welcome back to 22 Panels. This is kind of a special episode because the Heavy Metal Book Club Plus Bell has hijacked the Joy Resistance Hope and Survival Book Club.
- 0:19Tad Eggleston: since the psychologists weren't available this month, and since it was the Starhenge month anyway, it seemed like the right people to turn to
- 0:29Tad Eggleston: To have a… deeper conversation.
- 0:33Matt: Although, I'll be honest, I feel very underqualified.
- 0:37Matt: psychologists, so…
- 0:39Tad Eggleston: Well, so we won't get into as much of the surviv… the specific psychology of it as we sometimes.
- 0:47Matt: Thumbs up then.
- 0:48Tad Eggleston: J-R-H-Ace.
- 0:49Tad Eggleston: I, I will, I will tell you.
- 0:52Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, I can just try to pretend like I'm a psychologist.
- 0:57Tad Eggleston: Did you stay at a Holiday Inn?
- 0:59Tad Eggleston: last night?
- 1:00Peter Eggleston Connor: No, I'm dead.
- 1:02Peter Eggleston Connor: I stayed at my, I stayed in my bed in my home, you know, in this apartment.
- 1:07Tad Eggleston: live at a Holiday Inn Express?
- 1:10Peter Eggleston Connor: Man, that would be something now, wouldn't it?
- 1:14Tad Eggleston: So, two things that I'll tell this group, because I… I think Matt might have come to one JRHS, but I don't… I know that Peter and Dylan haven't made any yet. A couple of things we do with the Joy Resistance Hope and Survival
- 1:33Tad Eggleston: book club that are a little bit different. The first is we'll do a quick
- 1:37Tad Eggleston: round-the-table check-in, just on how everybody is… is doing in the world. But then the second is, as we read the book.
- 1:48Tad Eggleston: We'll at least kind of keep some of those words in the back of our heads, you know, things that bring us joy, things that… that give us hope.
- 1:57Tad Eggleston: Things that, that represent, motivation for resistance or survival.
- 2:04Tad Eggleston: Because I try to pick these books out, because they… they spark at least some of those things in me. So, anyway, Belle needs to come back soon, because she's got to check in, too. There she is.
- 2:20Tad Eggleston: So we'll just go around. Who wants to check in first and just say, how they're doing this week, how they're feeling?
- 2:27Peter Eggleston Connor: As a heavy metal book clubber, I don't know what the hell this is, so I'm not.
- 2:31Matt: Alright, I'll go first then, because I've done it before.
- 2:34Matt: So, I'm Matt, and I'm actually feeling great, very happy. I had to travel last week for work.
- 2:41Matt: And I met a lot of people. I work from home, and so do all of my coworkers, so I've never really met all of them. I've met a couple of them in person once.
- 2:51Matt: And we actually… I talked about 22 panels at dinner one night, and it was a lot of fun, so, you know, I'm just, all around, just in a good mood, feeling good.
- 3:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Nice.
- 3:01Dillon: Right on.
- 3:02Tad Eggleston: I'll give you another example, I'll jump in next. I'm Tad, obviously. Well, semi-.
- 3:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Obviously.
- 3:08Tad Eggleston: to the four or five listeners of this podcast.
- 3:14Tad Eggleston: I'm doing pretty good. It's the second week off of school now. I shot up to Duluth to visit a friend, and a cousin, and an uncle, and an aunt, and then I stopped in Minneapolis to visit some comic peeps on the way home, Thursday through… or Tuesday through Thursday this week. I've had some great podcasts
- 3:32Tad Eggleston: conversations, we've released a bunch of episodes, and I've been relaxed, because, you know.
- 3:38Tad Eggleston: No, no youth of America to corrupt this week, just myself to entertain.
- 3:44Matt: The immortal words of Alice Cooper. School's out for the summer.
- 3:49Tad Eggleston: That's right.
- 3:49Matt: I'm Belle.
- 3:52Matt: I'm Matt's daughter. I am home! We are in the same room today! That is so special and so fun in so many ways. I'm going off for my PhD soon. In about a month, I'll be in the same city as Tad, which is awesome. And I'm just.
- 4:06Tad Eggleston: UC… She's also gonna get paid better than me, which still…
- 4:10Peter Eggleston Connor: is weird.
- 4:11Tad Eggleston: It's weird to me that her stipend while she gets her PhD is more than I get paid.
- 4:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Now, when you say that you're gonna be in the same city as Tad, do you mean you're gonna be in Chicago, or the same city.
- 4:24Tad Eggleston: It should be Chicago.
- 4:25Matt: No, Chicago.
- 4:27Dillon: Hmm…
- 4:27Tad Eggleston: Same metro area.
- 4:29Matt: I understand the clarification, though, Peter.
- 4:32Tad Eggleston: It is… it is a fair clarification. This is where…
- 4:36Matt: change of God.
- 4:37Tad Eggleston: And this is where Belle comes from a smaller city, so she doesn't get the expansive metro area thing yet.
- 4:45Matt: Yeah, we've been to New York.
- 4:46Tad Eggleston: Where you live, Bell?
- 4:49Tad Eggleston: don't say that I live in the same city as them, or many people where you will live. When you live in the city of Chicago, many, many, many people in the city.
- 4:58Peter Eggleston Connor: Chicago. No, I mean, to be perfectly honest.
- 5:00Tad Eggleston: Past the bordering towns, you're not in Chicago anymore.
- 5:04Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm gonna… I'm gonna… I'm gonna say this. I think… I think you're fine, Belle. Like, here's the thing. It's dumb, but, like…
- 5:12Peter Eggleston Connor: It is… does, like, boil down a lot to, hey, like, nobody's heard of…
- 5:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Rockford, or Wheaton, or Naperville. But people know Chicago, right?
- 5:26Matt: You're in Chicago, dude.
- 5:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Kind of like…
- 5:28Matt: about Chicago.
- 5:29Peter Eggleston Connor: People know Seattle, but if I drop some other, you know, cities around Seattle, people would be like, what, huh?
- 5:37Dillon: Yeah, people from Gresham saying they're from Portland.
- 5:41Tad Eggleston: I feel like it's at another level sometimes with Chicago, though, where, like, for anybody outside of Illinois, if you say you live in Illinois, they think you live in Chicago.
- 5:54Tad Eggleston: And, like, if you live in Chicago, and you live across the street into the bor… or, you know, over the border into Evanston, about half of Chicagoans will be upset if you call yourself a Chicago.
- 6:07Dillon: If it helps… if it helps, the other day in a group chat, I accidentally included New York in New England, in the New England area, and boy, they got real upset.
- 6:19Tad Eggleston: Oh, wow.
- 6:20Dillon: They got real mad at me. I was like, I'm sorry!
- 6:22Tad Eggleston: You understand that New England is smaller than New York.
- 6:26Matt: And they're very sensitive.
- 6:28Tad Eggleston: And has the Red Sox.
- 6:29Dillon: real mad.
- 6:32Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, okay.
- 6:33Matt: funny.
- 6:33Tad Eggleston: The Red Sox, the Celtics, and the Patriots are all in New England.
- 6:38Peter Eggleston Connor: This kind of just breaks down how, like, you know, humans in general categorize things in weird.
- 6:43Dillon: the fun.
- 6:44Peter Eggleston Connor: ways. Alright, check in, check in, check in.
- 6:50Peter Eggleston Connor: I'll… I'll go next. Honestly, I'm doing mostly pretty well. I'm pretty psyched. I got… I got done with the, Diablo 4 current season. I got…
- 7:03Peter Eggleston Connor: So that was exciting, that's,
- 7:06Peter Eggleston Connor: And, the other part of that is that, now I feel like I am relieved of that and can go actually do, important things. I don't have a lawn like Matt.
- 7:19Peter Eggleston Connor: But, you know…
- 7:21Matt: Well, you have a shot?
- 7:21Tad Eggleston: You gotta shower like Dylan.
- 7:23Matt: the shower like Dylan, that's what I meant.
- 7:27Dillon: That's the one good thing.
- 7:28Peter Eggleston Connor: I do need to, go clean out a storage unit, so…
- 7:33Dillon: Well, that sounds fun.
- 7:34Peter Eggleston Connor: focus on that.
- 7:35Dillon: Is it old stuff that you might be excited to rediscover, or is it all just trash?
- 7:43Dillon: Or is it something else?
- 7:44Tad Eggleston: Or did you purchase somebody else's storage unit and you don't know yet?
- 7:48Dillon: Oh, that's even.
- 7:49Peter Eggleston Connor: I wish it was, like, that option that I purchased somebody else's, and I didn't know, and maybe I was gonna make a whole bunch of money. No, it's all my junk. I… I'm at the point where I'm sure there's probably some exciting stuff in there that I will want, but…
- 8:02Tad Eggleston: You might find…
- 8:03Peter Eggleston Connor: Small folks are… what?
- 8:06Tad Eggleston: You might find some Pokemon cards.
- 8:08Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, those are probably down in the other storage unit.
- 8:12Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay. Go clean up that one instead.
- 8:15Dillon: then.
- 8:15Matt: Yeah, exactly.
- 8:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, cause that one's a lot farther away.
- 8:19Tad Eggleston: Actually.
- 8:20Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm getting help cleaning out that one, I think, hopefully, fingers crossed.
- 8:25Peter Eggleston Connor: But yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's my check-in.
- 8:29Dillon: Right now.
- 8:30Peter Eggleston Connor: Dealing with… Dismantling that shit so that, you know…
- 8:34Peter Eggleston Connor: I can feel better about life. Maybe.
- 8:37Dillon: My check-in? I'm… I'm doing good, I'm doing much better now. But a week or so ago,
- 8:46Dillon: I was… I was real burnt out at work, and I was not doing great. And so then I… I took one week off of work to do nothing and stay home, and it was terrific. I muted all the mutual chats that I'm in with my work people, I muted alerts from my email.
- 9:05Dillon: And I just ignored everything, and just recharged everything. And since I've been back at work, like, the workload hasn't so much changed, but, like, I feel more mentally well-equipped to handle those things. Like, I just feel better about doing them.
- 9:19Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's almost like you're saying that using one's vacation time is good for productivity.
- 9:27Matt: In my home.
- 9:28Tad Eggleston: That sounds very European to me.
- 9:30Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 9:31Dillon: Yeah.
- 9:31Peter Eggleston Connor: That almost sounds like people should have vacation time.
- 9:35Tad Eggleston: I mean, you're sounding European and socialist.
- 9:40Matt: Don't say it too loud, or it'll take all of our… I'll take it, I'll take it.
- 9:44Peter Eggleston Connor: No matter what, it'll develop, it'll happen?
- 9:48Peter Eggleston Connor: Or, you know, the secret police will come into my house and, you know…
- 9:53Tad Eggleston: I think the latter.
- 9:54Peter Eggleston Connor: It's not bad.
- 9:54Dillon: police.
- 9:56Dillon: But, like, also, like, there's just other good things happening now, like…
- 10:01Dillon: My wife and I are finally getting a new retaining wall outside of our house, that we've been trying to do forever.
- 10:08Tad Eggleston: For a half second, I thought you were saying a new retainer, and I'm like, you share those things now?
- 10:14Dillon: Yeah, we share.
- 10:15Tad Eggleston: Excited about that.
- 10:16Dillon: Finally getting a new one to share, yeah, for sure.
- 10:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Yes!
- 10:20Tad Eggleston: And I've never known anybody to be excited about getting a retainer.
- 10:23Dillon: Damn.
- 10:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Wait, wait, wait, why, right.
- 10:26Matt: Only a little.
- 10:26Peter Eggleston Connor: I feel like you have the wrong type of retainer, Ted.
- 10:30Tad Eggleston: You're…
- 10:31Peter Eggleston Connor: The thing that you put around your teeth.
- 10:34Dillon: But also, San Diego Comic-Con is coming up soon, and I have a pro badge for that for the first time this year, and so.
- 10:39Tad Eggleston: Oh, my goodness.
- 10:40Dillon: That's exciting. I updated my,
- 10:45Dillon: my convention table. Like, I've been working, like, I've been obsessing over my convention table to, like, make it look more professional. I think it's finally at a cool… a cool level now, and I'm excited to take it for a test run.
- 10:57Tad Eggleston: Well, and as Peter and I know, because you gave us extra ones, you have a sticker game, and that.
- 11:03Dillon: I got a sticker game, though, yeah. That is… Oh, my friend, so Adam, Adam is.
- 11:06Tad Eggleston: Tensions.
- 11:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh…
- 11:08Dillon: That's amazing.
- 11:09Peter Eggleston Connor: I haven't heard in forever.
- 11:11Dillon: Peter knows Adam. Adam is into 3D printing now.
- 11:14Dillon: And so he 3D printed me a sticker dispenser that has, like.
- 11:19Tad Eggleston: Oh, wow.
- 11:19Dillon: Kevin Catskull logo on it, and, like, a little femur bone, like, lever, and so you pull the lever, and a sticker comes out, and so, like, I'm excited to use that at my convention table.
- 11:29Matt: Yeah.
- 11:30Dillon: to them.
- 11:30Dillon: Yeah, it's rad.
- 11:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:32Peter Eggleston Connor: That'll be… that'll be awesome.
- 11:35Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 11:36Tad Eggleston: Now, for the reason that we recruited the… the heavy metal people, 4…
- 11:43Tad Eggleston: the… the Joy Resistance Open Survival Book Club.
- 11:46Tad Eggleston: This month's topic is…
- 11:49Tad Eggleston: Starhenge, Book 1, The Dragon and the Boar by Liam Sharp, which is one of my favorite books.
- 11:56Tad Eggleston: Over the last 5 or 6 years?
- 11:59Tad Eggleston: I guess 5 years, because it came out during the 22 Panels era.
- 12:04Dillon: Hmm.
- 12:04Tad Eggleston: one of the first books I had sent to me unsolicited by an artist. I didn't even really know who Liam was, and suddenly I had
- 12:13Tad Eggleston: Had the first issue.
- 12:15Tad Eggleston: Of… of this in my… my, twitter DMs.
- 12:23Tad Eggleston: And I read it, on a rough day, and was blown away.
- 12:28Tad Eggleston: And I emailed him how much I read it, and how much it had saved my day, and he emailed me the second book.
- 12:37Tad Eggleston: Or the second issue. So, like, I got to read the first two issues. I don't even… it had at most been solicited at that point, and I'm not even 100%
- 12:48Tad Eggleston: certain that it had been. I don't know how…
- 12:51Dillon: I would bet you, I would bet you,
- 12:54Peter Eggleston Connor: on Twitter.
- 12:55Dillon: I would bet you a significant sum that…
- 12:58Dillon: Not only did that save your day, but you telling him that.
- 13:02Matt: Damn.
- 13:03Dillon: Oh, okay.
- 13:05Tad Eggleston: He, he… He told me that. He's told me.
- 13:07Dillon: I, like, that… that… that, I bet, is… is priceless to hear, for sure.
- 13:12Peter Eggleston Connor: Pretty up.
- 13:12Dillon: for him.
- 13:13Tad Eggleston: And then it really worked out, because while I scheduled the… and we're recording a day late, but while I scheduled talking about Starhenge for the Joy, Resistance, Hope, and Survival June
- 13:27Tad Eggleston: Book Club.
- 13:29Tad Eggleston: like… Two months ago?
- 13:31Tad Eggleston: on Friday, Liam and I lock down tomorrow to talk about Book 2. So, like…
- 13:41Tad Eggleston: everything converged, so, like, I had good reasons to get caught up, good reasons to talk to some other people and have a fresh perspective.
- 13:49Peter Eggleston Connor: to crack the whip and be like, hey, I need people to read this.
- 13:53Tad Eggleston: Didn't… you guys could have overruled me.
- 13:58Tad Eggleston: You all showed interest.
- 14:01Peter Eggleston Connor: I'd just like to be funny.
- 14:03Peter Eggleston Connor: I know. Okay.
- 14:05Tad Eggleston: So, so that's as much as I want to share about the book off the bat. I want to get everybody else's, like, thoughts and impressions first, just because…
- 14:15Tad Eggleston: I evangelize about this book, so I don't wanna…
- 14:19Tad Eggleston: take over the conversation before I hear… What other people.
- 14:22Peter Eggleston Connor: Sure.
- 14:23Tad Eggleston: It's a really different book.
- 14:25Peter Eggleston Connor: Anybody want to go first?
- 14:29Peter Eggleston Connor: I can.
- 14:31Peter Eggleston Connor: Alright.
- 14:32Peter Eggleston Connor: I really like all the imagery done in here, and I really like all the story, and what I found really, really strange about it is that normally we will talk about stories like this, where there is just tons and tons of dialogue, and of course you just pass through all the pages where there weren't tons and tons of dialogue.
- 14:51Peter Eggleston Connor: Okay.
- 14:51Peter Eggleston Connor: But…
- 14:53Tad Eggleston: But then I got to one where there was. Right.
- 14:56Peter Eggleston Connor: And normally, we will call this a wordy comic, and…
- 14:59Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, it is, kinda. I mean, there's a lot of words in it. It's… it's… there's no way to say it's not a wordy comic, because…
- 15:10Peter Eggleston Connor: It's a fucking lordy comic. It's like reading a novel, and then, you know, reading a novel that's split up.
- 15:18Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, I wouldn't call it a full novel, because, like, I don't know how much that would actually
- 15:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Cut down into, like, an actual page-by-page if you took out all the pictures, but…
- 15:33Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know, it's one of those interesting things where, like, for some odd reason, on my mind is the fact that, like.
- 15:41Peter Eggleston Connor: a lot of times when we have stuff like this, we're like, oh, there's a lot of words, and we should let pictures do more of the storytelling, and I feel like, in this case, like.
- 15:51Peter Eggleston Connor: There's definitely sort of two stories going on, and one is kind of with pictures, and the pictures are kind of a little bit…
- 16:01Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, I almost want to say, like, most of the stories and the words, and then the pictures sort of help it, but are also can be kind of,
- 16:12Peter Eggleston Connor: That's the word.
- 16:14Peter Eggleston Connor: Not related.
- 16:16Dillon: Yeah, I think, to sort of piggyback on that a little bit.
- 16:21Dillon: I think that there is, I don't know if you want to call it a misnomer, but there's a… there's this idea in comics for art that a lot of people try to just subscribe to that…
- 16:34Dillon: The art should be able to tell the story without the words, or at least get the majority of the story without the words.
- 16:43Dillon: And I think that is good, that works most of the time. But that… that sort of takes away from…
- 16:55Dillon: Art like this, that is… It's…
- 17:01Dillon: It's necessary for the story, but the words, as many as there are, elevate the art.
- 17:10Dillon: Like, the art… the art isn't there to do the words jobs, and the words are not there to do the arts jobs. They're both there, and they both seem to be equally as important.
- 17:24Dillon: Which I think doesn't happen a lot. Normally, when there's… there's disconnected art, and there's… then there's just too many words, and you're like, geez, there's just too many words here.
- 17:33Matt: This isn't… this isn't worth it.
- 17:36Dillon: Like, show, show, don't tell, kind of a thing.
- 17:38Matt: But yeah, but this… this strikes the perfect balance. That's exactly, yeah.
- 17:42Dillon: That's…
- 17:43Matt: In heavy metal, we're like, yeah, we're gonna skip that, because there's too many words. But this is, like, I want to read…
- 17:50Dillon: Yeah.
- 17:50Matt: what's coming, So, yeah, it's like, it's… it is, it's like that perfect balance.
- 17:55Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, exactly. I was gonna say is, what's kind of interesting about this is even though, like, that thought comes to my head of, like, you know, normally we're thinking about comics where a lot of it, the storytelling is, in fact, via imagery, and I'm not saying that there isn't…
- 18:12Peter Eggleston Connor: anything… like, we get a lot out of the imagery, obviously, like, we get a ton out of it, but, like, in this, like, it's kinda…
- 18:21Peter Eggleston Connor: I think this actually does what we expect out of the words in comics, which is to say that whatever the words are doing, it's doing, you know, to add to our content, not to, reiterate.
- 18:37Peter Eggleston Connor: And I think that's a… that's a big part of it, I mean, like, just, like…
- 18:41Dillon: I think… I think just as you would be completely lost and confused if you read this without the art, if you read it with the just the art and not the words, like, you would be…
- 18:53Dillon: So hopelessly lost and confused.
- 18:55Matt: I was gonna say, we pretty much…
- 18:57Dillon: out.
- 18:58Dillon: But when they're together, like, it's… it really is… it's a… strikes a perfect balance between the two, it's great.
- 19:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I mean, I kind of would be interested, like, what it would be with just the words, or what it would be with just the art, but it definitely wouldn't be the same if you had…
- 19:15Matt: Yeah, no, there's experiences.
- 19:16Peter Eggleston Connor: One or the other,
- 19:19Peter Eggleston Connor: I think you would still have, kind of, these sort of complete things going on, they'd just be…
- 19:27Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, for one thing, it's really… I don't know how easy it is when you just have art to connect to things that are, like, so, ingrained in our society, like King Arthur. Like, can you…
- 19:42Peter Eggleston Connor: without, like, using some, like… and I just haven't seen any imagery that is purely King Arthur life, right? Or purely of that sort of story.
- 19:51Matt: genre.
- 19:52Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, you have the… the… What are these, what is this,
- 20:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Structure that they're at here, in this part of the story that we're looking at.
- 20:03Tad Eggleston: hench.
- 20:04Peter Eggleston Connor: That's right.
- 20:05Peter Eggleston Connor: You know, the thing that the book is named after.
- 20:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Star Hinge, Stonehenge. Yeah, my head, apparently doesn't claw… grasp things as well as it could, but
- 20:23Peter Eggleston Connor: And I lost track of my thought, so I'll come back to that.
- 20:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, that was it. But there's nothing that's clearly like, oh, this is Arthur, you know, king of the…
- 20:35Peter Eggleston Connor: you know, Britain and what have you, like, there's no…
- 20:40Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't even think they do, like, the sword and the stone at all, and they certainly don't do it in a way where, like, you know, you, like, are like, oh, okay, like…
- 20:49Peter Eggleston Connor: King Arthur, got it.
- 20:51Peter Eggleston Connor: Right, so…
- 20:52Matt: No, yeah, there's no… single mnemonic, visual mnemonic, be like, that sums up King Arthur. Right. You're right. 100%.
- 21:01Matt: The sword and the stone is the closest thing you could get to that, and he doesn't go anywhere near that in this…
- 21:05Peter Eggleston Connor: Right.
- 21:06Matt: That's…
- 21:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, that's what I was saying, like, he doesn't… he doesn't pull on that, so…
- 21:11Matt: Yep.
- 21:12Matt: So, seeing this without the words, you're not gonna get that it's a King Arthur story, because that dude in the robe could be Gandalf, it could be, you know, whoever, so…
- 21:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Nope.
- 21:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Tomorrow.
- 21:29Tad Eggleston: Well, and he explained some of that, and some of the fourth wall-breaking points, though I know that because this got tossed on people, not everybody has gotten through the whole thing.
- 21:43Tad Eggleston: But really, there was a book by Nikolai Tolstoy called The Quest for Merlin that really tried to explore
- 21:54Tad Eggleston: Like… Whether or not there was a real person that… inspired the Merlin legend.
- 22:04Tad Eggleston: And that, combined with Jeffrey of Monmouth.
- 22:09Tad Eggleston: Who wrote the first history of the British Kings, and like… 1000?
- 22:18Tad Eggleston: maybe 1200? You know, way, way back, way before the Le Morte to Arthur that I think is the first place that you see the sword and the stone.
- 22:27Tad Eggleston: And also wrote a book on Merlin. He kind of uses them as his primary…
- 22:38Tad Eggleston: Source material for the…
- 22:41Tad Eggleston: for the historical parts, while at the same time doing this… this crazy idea where Merlin is really…
- 22:52Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm traveling, future…
- 22:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah, future… Right.
- 22:59Tad Eggleston: Sent back in time.
- 23:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Because they call it carved.
- 23:05Tad Eggleston: Carp. Karked, yeah. CARCED.
- 23:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Which is essentially genetically and or otherwise modified.
- 23:15Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 23:16Tad Eggleston: And in some of their cases, genetically and otherwise modified to have the ability to
- 23:24Tad Eggleston: To change their appearance at will, etc.
- 23:28Matt: Did he… did he create that term, Kirk?
- 23:32Tad Eggleston: I don't know.
- 23:32Dillon: It's cool as hell. If he didn't…
- 23:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 23:36Dillon: Man, I mean, if he did, kudos, because it's great.
- 23:39Matt: Oh, I love it, but I'm like.
- 23:41Dillon: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:41Matt: It fits so well, I feel like it's something I should know.
- 23:46Matt: Right. Like, I guess that's why I'm asking. It's like, damn, I should… I feel like I should know what that means.
- 23:51Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know, when I look it up on Google, and they come back with the AI-generated crap, the slang meaning is to die or break down, and the traditional meaning is to worry, so I…
- 24:06Peter Eggleston Connor: I have no idea where he got it. Maybe he…
- 24:09Peter Eggleston Connor: I think it's possible he just made it.
- 24:12Tad Eggleston: That's entirely possible.
- 24:15Tad Eggleston: It might even, I, I won't even be able.
- 24:21Peter Eggleston Connor: Question for tomorrow?
- 24:22Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 24:23Matt: Oh, absolutely.
- 24:24Tad Eggleston: matter I should ask tomorrow.
- 24:27Matt: Am I?
- 24:27Tad Eggleston: Bell, if she shows up or starts talking at all.
- 24:34Matt: My other question, though, is the er queen? Like, whenever you see, like, er in front of a word, someone's like, er, queen? You know, like, they're saying…
- 24:44Tad Eggleston: Well, you only got two pages into it that became ore.
- 24:51Tad Eggleston: That's, that's, that's what Ore is about.
- 24:54Peter Eggleston Connor: Ur, though, is like… there's more…
- 24:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 24:59Peter Eggleston Connor: That's true.
- 24:59Matt: Okay, so you're saying that when I finish OR, I will understand all the little prefixes. Okay, cool.
- 25:06Tad Eggleston: A little bit more. Cool. I mean, they're essentially honorifics.
- 25:12Tad Eggleston: But, but over time, they morphed.
- 25:15Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I was gonna mention…
- 25:16Matt: I want to know that.
- 25:19Peter Eggleston Connor: At some point, Dylan, they have this part here where they talk about King Arthur that Tad just skipped, fighting his nephew.
- 25:28Peter Eggleston Connor: in it.
- 25:28Tad Eggleston: Moder.
- 25:29Peter Eggleston Connor: for a little bit, it just feels like it is truly just a story. Maybe not this page, but, like, one of these pages, the first two. Yeah.
- 25:37Matt: Three pages. Yeah, this well, it's…
- 25:38Tad Eggleston: It's written as the… as… as,
- 25:43Tad Eggleston: a story of Talieson. And that's, you know, now I'll chime in a little bit. One of the things that I appreciate about this, and why I thought that the Heavy Metal Club was a good…
- 25:57Tad Eggleston: a good team to recruit is, yes, so many of these things, like… like this, are the things that we would skip in heavy metal, except that they're… here, they're so tied into the storytelling.
- 26:10Dillon: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:10Tad Eggleston: Yes, we're shifting to…
- 26:13Matt: these.
- 26:13Tad Eggleston: pages, it's much more of an illuminated… illuminated prose than comic, but…
- 26:20Peter Eggleston Connor: I, I, go ahead, sorry. I don't want to cut you off.
- 26:26Tad Eggleston: But… but… but… But he's doing so for a specific reason. They've come to Taliesin. Taliesin's, like…
- 26:37Tad Eggleston: the, the Bard extraordinaire.
- 26:40Peter Eggleston Connor: So, he would be saying, like, he would verbally be given that, too, which is kind of interesting. What I was gonna say is, you messed up, though. You didn't come to, to, Heavy Metal. Heavy Metal has now pirated, your other, your other book club.
- 26:55Peter Eggleston Connor: Before the day.
- 26:56Tad Eggleston: That's what it meant. Okay, that works.
- 27:00Matt: on the SPU Dolores, alright?
- 27:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Next month, just… just so that…
- 27:05Tad Eggleston: And just so you're prepared, next month is Constitution Illustrated, and Declaration slash Emancipation Illustrated by R. Sikoriak. So, you know.
- 27:16Peter Eggleston Connor: anything.
- 27:18Tad Eggleston: Oh, you're saying… you're saying you're not dedicated pirates. You're gonna go, oh, we're done with this shit.
- 27:25Matt: We're fair weather pipes.
- 27:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Right, we come, we plunder, we take…
- 27:29Matt: We moved.
- 27:30Peter Eggleston Connor: Move on. That is what we pirates do.
- 27:33Tad Eggleston: Well, actually, then you really should read Constitution Illustrated, because there is a sense in which Bob comes, plunders, takes, and moves on.
- 27:43Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, you, let me.
- 27:45Tad Eggleston: But you'll have to read it to know.
- 27:46Peter Eggleston Connor: remind me of that when we're closer, baby, and I'll think about it. Okay. Depending on where my life is at.
- 27:54Peter Eggleston Connor: And how much of that,
- 27:57Peter Eggleston Connor: storage unit I still have to deal with.
- 28:00Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 28:02Tad Eggleston: I do like… I'm trying to figure out which robot Er, kinda reminds me of, like…
- 28:16Tad Eggleston: The TikTok man of Oz.
- 28:18Dillon: Yeah.
- 28:19Tad Eggleston: For some of the ways where the TikTok mine of Oz is… is…
- 28:23Dillon: Royal Army.
- 28:25Tad Eggleston: Right. Royal Armory, yeah, definitely.
- 28:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 28:28Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 28:29Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm a little confused on this, though. That's his nephew, though, right?
- 28:33Matt: Yup.
- 28:34Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 28:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Okay, so, like…
- 28:37Tad Eggleston: But his nephew has also become very involved with the dark…
- 28:42Tad Eggleston: Sorcerers, who this is kind of implying may be less of a magic user and more of a science user.
- 28:51Tad Eggleston: You know, there's some discussion about how there are eras where magic is gone. This is important.
- 28:56Peter Eggleston Connor: So, to… to our listeners, to give you the… the short,
- 29:03Peter Eggleston Connor: Sort of over… overarching story of… this comic.
- 29:10Peter Eggleston Connor: In the distant future, humanity… after humanity has figured out spaceflight and all that junk, we come across a, pretty desolate planet with lots of ruins on it.
- 29:23Peter Eggleston Connor: And we think, like, nothing's living there, and it turns out that…
- 29:28Peter Eggleston Connor: There are a bunch of sleeping robots there.
- 29:30Matt: AI, yeah.
- 29:32Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 29:33Peter Eggleston Connor: That just sort of wake up, and when they wake up, decide to start destroying life across
- 29:41Peter Eggleston Connor: you know, the Galaxy.
- 29:44Peter Eggleston Connor: Particularly humans, but I mean, like, that's probably mostly the focus, because humans are sort of the viewpoint of
- 29:52Peter Eggleston Connor: the story, right? Like, we don't go looking at a lot of other species.
- 29:56Peter Eggleston Connor: But, so, like… This story is kind of like… essentially, what they essentially confirmed early on is
- 30:09Peter Eggleston Connor: There are sort of, like, 3 different spaces, that…
- 30:14Peter Eggleston Connor: these… this AI, or these robots, and these humans fight on, and it's like, the real world… the…
- 30:23Peter Eggleston Connor: essentially internet playing, and the, like, dreamscape, like, you know, where dreams happen. And the best way how to, like, screw with… with robots and AI is apparently magic, which is what they're trying to find with all their time-traveling shenanig.
- 30:41Dillon: Because it's not logical, and it can't be computed, right?
- 30:45Matt: They just can't… they can't grasp it, man.
- 30:49Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep, that… that was the reason given to it, yes. Right.
- 30:53Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 30:57Tad Eggleston: is.
- 30:57Peter Eggleston Connor: What will…
- 30:58Tad Eggleston: the… the… the son of the… her queen.
- 31:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, what I was gonna say is this… this… when we talk about the story of… Arthur fighting his…
- 31:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Nephew, the thing that I was confused about was…
- 31:15Peter Eggleston Connor: It almost feels as if they portray his nephew as one of the robots.
- 31:21Matt: Got carved.
- 31:21Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, the dread, whatever.
- 31:25Tad Eggleston: Dreadnoughts.
- 31:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 31:29Peter Eggleston Connor: That got… get sent back in time at random places. I mean, like… and so, like, what I'm…
- 31:35Peter Eggleston Connor: Trying to figure out is that whole…
- 31:39Peter Eggleston Connor: sort of deal with both the queen, the evil queen, the nephew, who, you know, he's a nephew, so you suspect that he's… has some blood lineage to Arthur.
- 31:51Peter Eggleston Connor: Or some bloodline tie.
- 31:55Peter Eggleston Connor: And not so much the big giant knight, because that just corresponds with other things in the story, where…
- 32:02Peter Eggleston Connor: A dreadnought gets sent back to go… Deal with… Wilton…
- 32:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Sorry, they give them so many names. Anyhow, Amber…
- 32:18Tad Eggleston: Amber.
- 32:20Peter Eggleston Connor: Merlin Wilt, what was that third name? Something with a D?
- 32:26Tad Eggleston: Daryl is the name that Amber knows him by, but it turns out that he's really been along for a long time, and Merlin knows him as…
- 32:36Matt: So does the other dude.
- 32:37Peter Eggleston Connor: Right, so…
- 32:43Peter Eggleston Connor: So Daryl is not Merlin?
- 32:46Tad Eggleston: No, no.
- 32:46Tad Eggleston: Daryl is here. Daryl is Kushim Sal.
- 32:51Matt: Merlin is the Erk Queen's son.
- 32:55Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 32:56Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh.
- 32:57Tad Eggleston: Apparently, just from this last page, Amber is the Earth.
- 33:02Matt: His grandmother.
- 33:03Tad Eggleston: mother.
- 33:05Matt: That's the time… that's the time, trail.
- 33:09Tad Eggleston: Tibby-wimey shit.
- 33:10Matt: Yes!
- 33:12Peter Eggleston Connor: Mmm, well…
- 33:15Peter Eggleston Connor: That means that I made an assumption, and had been going with that assumption for a long, long time, and it turned out not to be true, but whatever.
- 33:22Tad Eggleston: I know that, like, half of the assumptions I make each time I read this book, I discover are wrong the next time I read this book. This is actually one of the reasons that I like this book.
- 33:35Peter Eggleston Connor: Wait, can you go to the point where the dread…
- 33:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Thing comes back in time and starts bashing shit up in the.
- 33:43Matt: When they lose their tent?
- 33:46Tad Eggleston: Oh, in the modern timeline? Yeah.
- 33:49Peter Eggleston Connor: With, Amber and Daryl.
- 33:52Tad Eggleston: Forward or back right now?
- 33:54Peter Eggleston Connor: backwards.
- 33:54Matt: back for now. Back.
- 33:56Peter Eggleston Connor: Words, backwards… Sorry, viewers, I'm sure this is such an interesting, thing for me to talk.
- 34:02Tad Eggleston: We're scrolling pages. Somebody come up with scrolling pages music. Though, while we go.
- 34:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Hilarious.
- 34:09Tad Eggleston: I really.
- 34:10Peter Eggleston Connor: These are the pictures that I wanted.
- 34:13Peter Eggleston Connor: And admittedly, like…
- 34:14Tad Eggleston: This section?
- 34:15Peter Eggleston Connor: It's sort of a different… yes.
- 34:17Tad Eggleston: I, I, I…
- 34:18Peter Eggleston Connor: comic.
- 34:19Tad Eggleston: I bought…
- 34:20Dillon: That section is so good.
- 34:20Tad Eggleston: this.
- 34:21Dillon: Cool.
- 34:22Tad Eggleston: I loved this… this… it's very much… it reminds me of, like.
- 34:27Tad Eggleston: Bernie writes in Swamps… Swamp Thing.
- 34:30Dillon: I was gonna say the exact same thing.
- 34:33Tad Eggleston: But also…
- 34:34Matt: That's one thing in this book that I really dug, was the changing of art styles, telling the same story. I wish we did it a little bit more with this comic style.
- 34:45Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean.
- 34:45Dillon: Also, he looks like.
- 34:46Peter Eggleston Connor: It's just amazing.
- 34:48Tad Eggleston: But then also, did you notice that the inks by Ralph Rhames and the colors by Raps Mahal are both anagrams for Liam Sharp?
- 34:59Dillon: Oh, I did not know that. That's funny.
- 35:01Tad Eggleston: That's pretty typical.
- 35:03Dillon: Cool little detail.
- 35:03Peter Eggleston Connor: Earth.
- 35:05Tad Eggleston: Trevor Weaver is the writer, and Bill Blunt is the letterer, but…
- 35:10Peter Eggleston Connor: There you go.
- 35:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, but then what I was gonna say is, like, for some odd reason, when I saw this part, I was like, oh, that looks like the Blue Merlin sort of stuff.
- 35:21Matt: Because they're both carked, that's why they look that way.
- 35:23Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 35:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, it makes sense. Yeah.
- 35:26Matt: Might be…
- 35:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, it seemed like…
- 35:29Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know. I just gotta read the next one at some point and figure out what the fuck is going on, because, like, in my head, it's still like, no matter how much you tell me, oh, like, it's the grandma and whatever, I'm like, that's just fucking weird. It's like…
- 35:41Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm just like, no, these people, like, they feel like the same person.
- 35:45Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 35:46Matt: Kind of do, I get that, but…
- 35:48Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, it's just two different timelines, and I mean, like, at the very beginning, she… she's telling the story, and she's like, oh, you've already met, or you already know this person, or whatever, and, like, then she introduces Merlin, and it's like, oh, okay.
- 36:05Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, but then also way, way, way back at the beginning.
- 36:10Peter Eggleston Connor: like, when, like, we first meet the Earth Queen's son.
- 36:19Matt: Daryl and his other brother, Daryl?
- 36:21Matt: Does anyone get that joke?
- 36:23Dillon: That's a… no, that was a good… hats off… hats off to that one.
- 36:27Tad Eggleston: Isn't that.
- 36:28Peter Eggleston Connor: What I was gonna say was…
- 36:30Matt: You heard…
- 36:31Peter Eggleston Connor: At this point where, like.
- 36:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 36:32Peter Eggleston Connor: The… the son is, like, has…
- 36:35Peter Eggleston Connor: Some woman in his spaceship or whatever that, you know, gets called away.
- 36:42Peter Eggleston Connor: before they can, you know, make love or whatever, I was like, oh… I don't know, it's just…
- 36:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah?
- 36:49Peter Eggleston Connor: I thought those were the same characters too, so I don't know, I'm drawing lines that apparently just aren't there. We'll see.
- 36:55Tad Eggleston: Or are and haven't been fleshed out yet.
- 36:58Tad Eggleston: I mean, Liam has…
- 37:02Tad Eggleston: This is… this is, like, the… the back of his head project for his entire life.
- 37:07Tad Eggleston: You know, this is, like, the intended magnum opus, and…
- 37:12Tad Eggleston: He has layers upon layers upon layers.
- 37:18Tad Eggleston: Which is one of the things I love about it, but also why…
- 37:21Tad Eggleston: As much as it infuriates me that it didn't sell as well the first time around as it should have been.
- 37:26Tad Eggleston: What?
- 37:27Peter Eggleston Connor: I thought it… it's… There's a Futurama joke of… Mister, you,
- 37:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Fucks his own grandma, or whatever.
- 37:39Peter Eggleston Connor: He's his own grandfather.
- 37:41Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 37:42Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know.
- 37:45Peter Eggleston Connor: Makes me wonder, but hey.
- 37:49Matt: So if I had one negative comment, and it's not… I don't think it's negative.
- 37:54Peter Eggleston Connor: Is that Peter's, Peter's douche? I hear it.
- 37:56Matt: No, no, no, no, no, about the artwork.
- 37:58Peter Eggleston Connor: That's with you.
- 37:59Matt: The, the, the dreadnoughts look so much like Death's Head 2, I could not separate it.
- 38:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, I love their… the… I love what they did with all the dreadnoughts and all the…
- 38:13Matt: Oh, I do too! But Death's Head 2, the cover of Death's Head 2 No. 1, kept popping into my head. I'm gonna share it in the chat so you guys can see it.
- 38:22Tad Eggleston: I was about to say, do I know this?
- 38:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, that, that, I can see that.
- 38:31Dillon: I wanna hear Tad evangelize this.
- 38:33Matt: Why wouldn't I look…
- 38:34Dillon: I wanna hear…
- 38:35Tad Eggleston: I'm here.
- 38:36Dillon: His… his in-depth thoughts from someone who's More familiar with the material.
- 38:42Tad Eggleston: I mean, like…
- 38:44Tad Eggleston: The way… the way… the way… the way Liam described it, and… and, like, we worked out as our… as our front counter pitch, roughly, when he was on the first time, is, like…
- 38:57Tad Eggleston: it's a take on Arthurian legend with, with some teenage romance mixed in, and… and… and some…
- 39:13Tad Eggleston: and… and,
- 39:19Tad Eggleston: sci-fi… Galactic Empire building with some… Doctor Who timey-wimey shit.
- 39:30Tad Eggleston: It's, like, the short version. But the long version is it's some of the… Best art that you're…
- 39:39Tad Eggleston: Ever gonna see in a comic book, or almost anywhere.
- 39:49Tad Eggleston: Like, pushing every… Every, every edge of the medium?
- 39:59Matt: For sure, for sure.
- 40:02Tad Eggleston: making it… Well, and… Who are the creators of Death's Head?
- 40:12Tad Eggleston: Matt.
- 40:14Matt: looking. I don't know off the top of my head.
- 40:17Tad Eggleston: Dan Abnett… and Liam Sharp.
- 40:21Matt: Are you shitting me?
- 40:22Dillon: Right.
- 40:23Tad Eggleston: I'm not. That's why…
- 40:24Dillon: I was looking…
- 40:25Tad Eggleston: it up, because I was pretty certain that, yes, it looked like it, but it wasn't, like, totally coincidence. It was that, like…
- 40:33Tad Eggleston: Quite possibly, Death's Head looked like this thing that he'd already worked out for this, but not used in this yet.
- 40:40Matt: Nope, you're right, oh my god, I made that connection, that's amazing.
- 40:45Dillon: That is hilarious. That's great.
- 40:48Peter Eggleston Connor: Wonderful.
- 40:50Peter Eggleston Connor: That is amazing.
- 40:52Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, I mean, he's clearly, you know, it's put together by somebody who clearly loves Arthurian lore, loves science fiction fantasy, loves the medium of comics.
- 41:06Matt: Yep.
- 41:07Tad Eggleston: And has one of the broadest definitions possible of the medium of comics, because even those times where it borders on an illustrated novel, like…
- 41:19Tad Eggleston: Never for long enough that, that, that it could stand alone.
- 41:24Tad Eggleston: And never in ways that I think the story would be told better by finding a way to make them comics. Going back and forth between the full-color paintings and the
- 41:39Tad Eggleston: The black and white, almost… Photographic paintings, and then much more…
- 41:48Tad Eggleston: Traditional comics, but almost in the…
- 41:51Matt: General sketchbook.
- 41:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the modern, the modern autobiographical style.
- 41:57Tad Eggleston: You know, storytelling that's at both…
- 42:03Tad Eggleston: At times, epic, and at other times, very forthwall-breaking and personal, with hints of…
- 42:11Tad Eggleston: Humor, but the humor never takes away from the bigger story, and the bigger story never gets so epic and serious that, like…
- 42:21Tad Eggleston: It's too heavy to go?
- 42:24Matt: Hmm.
- 42:24Tad Eggleston: Like, cause it, like, particularly when you're doing, like…
- 42:31Tad Eggleston: epic medieval-slash-fantasy storytelling, it's easy to get so high language and whatnot that it just drags. And he touches on that, but never falls over the edge.
- 42:47Tad Eggleston: Like, again, there's so many individual things about this book that, in and of themselves, are wonderful, but that also shouldn't work together.
- 42:58Tad Eggleston: shouldn't be the greater than the sum of their parts. And yet, somehow, he has crafted something that is.
- 43:06Matt: 100%.
- 43:07Tad Eggleston: You know, the number of… I mean, I loved that Peter immediately brought up that, like.
- 43:13Tad Eggleston: Half the time when we read stories like this, we're like.
- 43:16Tad Eggleston: too many words, I couldn't even read it all, or they showed me that, why did they say that? And, like, none of those statements are true of this. Like, every… every guideline
- 43:29Tad Eggleston: That's easy to break, he… Breaks, but in a way that works, rather than…
- 43:38Tad Eggleston: Rather than displaying why it's a guideline.
- 43:42Matt: Yep, exactly.
- 43:44Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 43:45Matt: That is truly the thing I like most about this story.
- 43:49Tad Eggleston: You know, page layouts are… just…
- 43:57Tad Eggleston: like, the only person I know that I like page layouts, and some of them are very much like, like,
- 44:06Tad Eggleston: Jesse Lonergins. The only person whose page layouts that I rave about as much as I sometimes rave about these page layouts is Jesse Lonergan. And they have some similarities in the way they use panels to both speed up and slow down time.
- 44:23Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 44:30Matt: Oh, I love this part.
- 44:32Peter Eggleston Connor: Luckily.
- 44:32Matt: and get some stones moved. That was so… This is brilliant.
- 44:37Peter Eggleston Connor: Is it funny? Sorry.
- 44:39Peter Eggleston Connor: It's just funny to me that it feels… Kinda like a phallic joke.
- 44:46Tad Eggleston: I think it's supposed to be a phallic joke.
- 44:47Matt: Clearly. I would assume so.
- 44:50Tad Eggleston: Particularly because that's not the way that it actually happened.
- 44:55Tad Eggleston: That's one of the possible… like, all of the different pictures are… others insist the stones were dragged on rolling logs all the way from Wales or nearer by.
- 45:06Peter Eggleston Connor: We have yours.
- 45:08Peter Eggleston Connor: To give our listeners some idea of what's going on, there's a giant with a massive boulder in his hands.
- 45:19Matt: Barely shake.
- 45:19Peter Eggleston Connor: about how Stonehenge got to where it is.
- 45:23Tad Eggleston: Well, specifically the idea that the rocks were from Ireland, even though… the… the… the… the sh…
- 45:32Tad Eggleston: structure itself is in the south of England.
- 45:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Right.
- 45:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Yes, that specific part of it.
- 45:45Peter Eggleston Connor: Boom.
- 45:46Tad Eggleston: But… but so each of the pictures is one of the… the legendary…
- 45:52Tad Eggleston: versions of it while… while Merlin is saying, but essentially, I just made it happen.
- 46:00Peter Eggleston Connor: There you go.
- 46:02Tad Eggleston: You know, and you get the… and you get the shout-out to Spinal Tap.
- 46:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Wow. Except Merlin isn't saying it, Amber's saying it.
- 46:12Peter Eggleston Connor: I think. Okay.
- 46:15Peter Eggleston Connor: Amber's saying that what she's being…
- 46:19Peter Eggleston Connor: What she was told, or what she knows about it.
- 46:22Tad Eggleston: Okay. Amber is saying that Merlin just made it happen.
- 46:25Peter Eggleston Connor: Because I'm pretty sure the whole story is… Amber's voice, right?
- 46:30Matt: Yeah. Iceland.
- 46:31Tad Eggleston: thinks so?
- 46:32Matt: I think she is the omnipotent observer that we are following.
- 46:36Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 46:39Peter Eggleston Connor: Which connects to, you know, you were talking about how the… there's just so much of pure love for Arthurian love at… legend, sorry.
- 46:49Peter Eggleston Connor: And then she's kind of represented, or, like, heavily representative of that, right?
- 46:57Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 46:59Peter Eggleston Connor: So…
- 47:00Tad Eggleston: I love this page.
- 47:04Peter Eggleston Connor: That was a pretty good image.
- 47:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Right before the terrifying.
- 47:08Matt: At what point did you guys realize what killed her parents?
- 47:15Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, Dylan, you want to chime in? You're the one who, nevermind.
- 47:22Tad Eggleston: has gotten the least distance, and honestly, I'll say that I don't 100% know what killed her parents yet.
- 47:30Peter Eggleston Connor: What?
- 47:31Matt: I assume it's one of these dreadnoughts that popped in.
- 47:34Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 47:35Matt: Like, they, like…
- 47:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Man.
- 47:36Matt: I just kind of assumed that. I could be wrong, you're right.
- 47:39Peter Eggleston Connor: At some point, they make a high implication that it was probably a dreadnought.
- 47:45Tad Eggleston: I mean, I definitely think it's something future-related.
- 47:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah, like, a page like this shouldn't work.
- 48:00Tad Eggleston: Looking at a page with a couple of panels tumbling down, a lot of… of…
- 48:07Matt: It's almost like…
- 48:08Tad Eggleston: Like, it's water-soaked.
- 48:10Matt: Leonardo da Vinci meets Clive Barker meets…
- 48:15Matt: it's hard to… I can't pick the third, but the.
- 48:17Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 48:18Matt: That mesh, that melding of styles.
- 48:30Tad Eggleston: Right. I just… But yeah, that's why I love it.
- 48:37Tad Eggleston: I know most of you didn't get to it.
- 48:40Tad Eggleston: But let's hit on OR just a little bit, at least Peter and I. OR is actually even more…
- 48:50Tad Eggleston: God, illuminated.
- 48:51Dillon: page.
- 48:51Tad Eggleston: pros.
- 48:53Peter Eggleston Connor: That is a cool bird.
- 48:55Tad Eggleston: This is fast.
- 48:56Matt: That's why I was like, I gotta cut the grass.
- 49:00Tad Eggleston: But, somehow moves faster than you expect it to.
- 49:05Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, that's, like, too long to read, or…
- 49:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah, when I started to dig in, I'm like, am I gonna be able to get through this?
- 49:12Tad Eggleston: And not only did I get through it, I got through it with, like, significant time to spare.
- 49:18Tad Eggleston: In part because… While it is, in many ways, an illuminated novella,
- 49:34Tad Eggleston: Once it loads, we can… we can show off.
- 49:36Tad Eggleston: There are… many sections That are way more picture than… than…
- 49:49Tad Eggleston: than…
- 49:50Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, so the difference between… Or… and,
- 50:00Peter Eggleston Connor: the Starhenge Book 1, if… in my brief…
- 50:04Peter Eggleston Connor: like… that I've comprised so far is essentially…
- 50:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Or does a lot where, like, there is a lot of word texting, but one, it feels like a lot of that word texting is, like, put into more concise places, so you're not, like, running around the
- 50:21Peter Eggleston Connor: Page, trying to find it all.
- 50:26Peter Eggleston Connor: And two, I mean, like, I just feel like it just, you know, connects that a little bit, like, it…
- 50:34Peter Eggleston Connor: It is also just, like, a shorter… shorter thing in general, like, it's… .
- 50:40Tad Eggleston: I think it's, like, 50-some-odd pages.
- 50:42Peter Eggleston Connor: 50… 50-some-odd pages sounds right.
- 50:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 50:45Matt: I thought Ore was 60-something.
- 50:48Peter Eggleston Connor: It might be.
- 50:49Tad Eggleston: It's 61…
- 50:52Matt: That includes the back cover, and… Yeah.
- 50:54Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 50:55Tad Eggleston: Is it 16?
- 50:57Dillon: Is it four, or is it four?
- 50:58Tad Eggleston: Including coverage.
- 50:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Is it horror?
- 51:00Tad Eggleston: You know… That's a question to ask Liam.
- 51:05Dillon: Liam.
- 51:05Tad Eggleston: Particularly because it…
- 51:07Dillon: Hit… get us in the comments.
- 51:08Matt: Pronunciation.
- 51:11Tad Eggleston: It did… it did come from the ER.
- 51:16Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 51:17Tad Eggleston: Which, I don't know if it's ER, or your, or…
- 51:20Peter Eggleston Connor: borrow.
- 51:21Tad Eggleston: So yeah, we'll have to talk pronunciations with Liam, too.
- 51:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I don't know, I thought I'm… Is it…
- 51:31Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm interested in what people found, like, as we were talking about, like, since we're, abducting the, Hope
- 51:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Sorry, I don't remember all the four words.
- 51:42Tad Eggleston: Joy, resistance, hope, and survival.
- 51:45Peter Eggleston Connor: Joy, Resistance, Hope, and Survival outcasts.
- 51:49Peter Eggleston Connor: Or book club.
- 51:54Peter Eggleston Connor: Sorry.
- 51:54Tad Eggleston: And I think…
- 51:55Peter Eggleston Connor: victim.
- 51:55Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'll just… I mean, I'll tell you why… how all of that came together in terms of me picking this book. Like, the pure beauty of all of this is what brings me joy.
- 52:07Tad Eggleston: Both tales are tales of resistance and survival up against impossible odds.
- 52:16Matt: Beautiful.
- 52:16Tad Eggleston: And hope is the… is the…
- 52:20Matt: Hope we get to finish this.
- 52:21Tad Eggleston: Well, it's also the underlying feeling that never quite goes away, no matter what's going on.
- 52:30Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, they… they… yeah, it's definitely well outlined that all of those things are sort of in this book.
- 52:38Peter Eggleston Connor: And both of these.
- 52:39Tad Eggleston: But… but… but here, here's actually the, the answer to…
- 52:52Tad Eggleston: Some true Velt demons sent back through time to manifest briefly.
- 52:56Tad Eggleston: as Dryads or their ilk. No longer the Urquine.
- 53:01Tad Eggleston: Her home now devoid of life. The Avatars would first come to… be known as simply ER.
- 53:11Tad Eggleston: Then eventually… eventually OR.
- 53:18Tad Eggleston: So… it's, it's like… when… when the… the queen first lost, she sent her presents through the whole medevilt…
- 53:30Tad Eggleston: et cetera, into, like…
- 53:35Tad Eggleston: Clones of herself… Vessels waiting for her, whatever you want to call it.
- 53:42Matt: Yeah.
- 53:42Tad Eggleston: That eventually.
- 53:44Matt: That's cool.
- 53:45Tad Eggleston: Known as the OR.
- 53:48Matt: Very cool.
- 53:50Tad Eggleston: So, so, this is both the prequel and… and the future of…
- 53:57Tad Eggleston: Of what we were reading before.
- 54:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, yeah.
- 54:01Dillon: And the whole premise, too, is that everything's happening all at once? Everything, everywhere, all at once.
- 54:06Peter Eggleston Connor: A little bit.
- 54:07Matt: Kind of, yeah.
- 54:08Peter Eggleston Connor: I was gonna say, like, we're talking about… the original comic was…
- 54:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, it itself, and the prequel, and the sequel to itself.
- 54:19Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, like, this whole series is kind of a…
- 54:24Tad Eggleston: So, another way to put it is this is the Ur Queen's… version of events.
- 54:32Tad Eggleston: Possibly of… Similar, if not exact, times.
- 54:37Tad Eggleston: with… The first fall.
- 54:40Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, I'll… I'll put it like this. This is… this is…
- 54:45Peter Eggleston Connor: This is a comic focusing on their queen and sort of what happened,
- 54:51Peter Eggleston Connor: kind of spinning off of one event that happens in the Book 1 of, starhenge, right?
- 55:00Peter Eggleston Connor: an event that happens in there, and we go deeper into, sort of, what happens to the Urquine after that, quote-unquote.
- 55:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Which, I mean, most of it actually is after that, because in this case.
- 55:15Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, depending how you want to see it.
- 55:17Peter Eggleston Connor: This is all happening in the future, right? But obviously, in the series.
- 55:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Sorry, listeners, the future is sort of some weird…
- 55:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Craft of both the future and the past, since people have history in the future.
- 55:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it's the future when compared to Daryl playing football.
- 55:40Tad Eggleston: And…
- 55:42Tad Eggleston: Arthur and Camelot. But it's the past…
- 55:49Peter Eggleston Connor: When you're talking about where these people came from.
- 55:52Tad Eggleston: Possibly. I mean, that's actually what I'm not 100% clear on when I'm watching this, is has… or when I'm reading this, is has…
- 56:04Tad Eggleston: Has Daryl been sent back, or has Merlin been sent back yet? Has she sent Wilt back? We don't really see Wilt in Ore, so I kind of assume that this is all after Wilt has been sent back.
- 56:16Tad Eggleston: But that really makes me wonder how the whole timey-wimey thing works, and whether, like, this is what could happen if Wilt fails, or… or is this assuming that Wilt failed, or…
- 56:29Tad Eggleston: My head's gonna break, but it's beautiful.
- 56:32Matt: Did you read one.
- 56:33Peter Eggleston Connor: assumed it's… it's part of everything. I don't know. I don't see it as, like, a different sort of… like, I know that sounds weird, but… and again, you know, only time…
- 56:46Peter Eggleston Connor: Real time and, you know, outside the comic will tell, but…
- 56:51Peter Eggleston Connor: You know, what I gathered from it was…
- 56:56Peter Eggleston Connor: That this is a very important part of something that's probably gonna be coming up, which is, essentially, she has dropped this
- 57:05Peter Eggleston Connor: We'll call it a virus, just to keep people who haven't read it in suspense, into the cast's mind, and.
- 57:18Tad Eggleston: being true.
- 57:19Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, like, we've already seen from or that it's starting to have repercussions on the cast, but I almost guarantee you that…
- 57:29Peter Eggleston Connor: it… I mean, like, you could have huge story repercussions just based off of it, right? Like, there are huge things that could happen from
- 57:38Peter Eggleston Connor: what she's done.
- 57:40Peter Eggleston Connor: And also, you know, There is some level of…
- 57:47Peter Eggleston Connor: probably meshing, kind of, what… what happened with it in the Knights of Veld.
- 57:55Peter Eggleston Connor: So… There's a lot going on, but…
- 58:00Tad Eggleston: There are.
- 58:01Peter Eggleston Connor: There was always a lot going on in the story, so…
- 58:04Peter Eggleston Connor: That is one thing I will say, it is very dense.
- 58:09Tad Eggleston: So, before we go, since the Heavy Metal Book Club has pirated the Joy, Resistance, Hope, and Survival Book Club, why…
- 58:22Dillon: Don't make us pick a favorite panel, it's impossible.
- 58:27Matt: Temperature.
- 58:27Tad Eggleston: Alright!
- 58:28Matt: Ain't…
- 58:28Tad Eggleston: Okay, we won't. We won't. I was…
- 58:31Peter Eggleston Connor: No, no, no, no.
- 58:33Matt: Where I'm going.
- 58:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Of course, especially since, Dylan, you haven't read it all, so I need to know your favorite panel so far, and then I need you to chime in later and say, Ashley, after I've finished reading all this, this is my favorite panel.
- 58:46Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh.
- 58:47Tad Eggleston: No, even as I was saying it.
- 58:48Peter Eggleston Connor: ongoing and a favorite story.
- 58:53Tad Eggleston: No, we would have just done panel.
- 58:56Peter Eggleston Connor: I was…
- 58:56Tad Eggleston: But even as I was starting to ask the question, I was like.
- 59:00Dillon: This is impossible.
- 59:00Tad Eggleston: actually want to have to do this?
- 59:03Dillon: We can… we can try and do it.
- 59:06Matt: with the boobs, and that does not arrow with that.
- 59:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Maybe you normally… I know we're pirating your, your, your,
- 59:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Joy, Resistance, Hope, and survival, but what does Joy, Hope, Resistance, and survive… or Joy, Resistance, Hope, and survival, sorry, normally do?
- 59:22Tad Eggleston: I mean, we don't have a specific closing thing. I mean, so probably what I do is… what I was thinking of doing before I came up with the ill-advised idea of having you try to pick between thousands of
- 59:35Tad Eggleston: beautiful panels. Amazing.
- 59:37Matt: pictures, yeah.
- 59:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 59:38Tad Eggleston: Which is, which is…
- 59:39Peter Eggleston Connor: That's gonna work.
- 59:41Tad Eggleston: Which is, which is, like, let's just, like, final thoughts.
- 59:46Tad Eggleston: Final thoughts, and is Belle hiding in the background, or she keeps going in and out?
- 59:51Tad Eggleston: Okay, she is there.
- 59:52Matt: I didn't read the book, so I'm reading it right
- 59:54Matt: About a third of the way through.
- 59:57Tad Eggleston: You're about a third of the way through. So…
- 59:59Tad Eggleston: What are your thoughts?
- 1:00:00Peter Eggleston Connor: That's my favorite thing so far.
- 1:00:02Matt: I think it's crazy. I think I really like what you guys were talking about with the art style shifts. I haven't even gotten…
- 1:00:09Matt: I mean, I've gotten a little far. I mean, I just… I've gone from the black and white to the spacey, spacey stuff.
- 1:00:17Matt: And then to the… the… the drawing. Like, the…
- 1:00:20Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:00:20Matt: cartoony style. And I really like how it's been used so far. I also think it's a lot of reading.
- 1:00:26Matt: So I'm down!
- 1:00:27Tad Eggleston: It is a lot of reading.
- 1:00:28Matt: A fresh mind tomorrow, and probably reread a little bit of it.
- 1:00:32Tad Eggleston: It is a lot of reading.
- 1:00:34Tad Eggleston: But it's good.
- 1:00:35Matt: I actually have never also read the story of King Arthur in its fullest, so this will be my first kind of idea.
- 1:00:40Tad Eggleston: And I am not…
- 1:00:41Dillon: totally.
- 1:00:42Tad Eggleston: I am not nearly as versed as Liam. Like, I've read the Once and Future King, and I've read The Idols of the King. I haven't read Mallory. I still need to read Geoffrey of Monmouth.
- 1:00:52Peter Eggleston Connor: What'd you say, Dylan? Sorry.
- 1:00:55Dillon: I was saying that, yeah, just read this, and you'll basically know all of, King Arthur.
- 1:01:00Tad Eggleston: A lot.
- 1:01:00Matt: Yeah.
- 1:01:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, you know… Most of that.
- 1:01:03Dillon: It's exactly the same, it's pretty much one for one.
- 1:01:05Matt: He got…
- 1:01:06Peter Eggleston Connor: What's up, it's.
- 1:01:06Matt: I've got carpent stories.
- 1:01:08Peter Eggleston Connor: You won't get the Sword and Stone, but that's it. You can go watch that animated Disney film, I guess.
- 1:01:13Tad Eggleston: Bro, we have…
- 1:01:14Peter Eggleston Connor: Probably enough.
- 1:01:14Tad Eggleston: I haven't edited Lancelot yet.
- 1:01:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh yeah, we haven't had the Knights of the Roundtable either.
- 1:01:20Matt: No D'Artagnan?
- 1:01:23Matt: That's Three Musketeers, that was a joke, sorry.
- 1:01:26Peter Eggleston Connor: I gotcha.
- 1:01:27Tad Eggleston: That's for the Jason Book Club.
- 1:01:30Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh…
- 1:01:30Tad Eggleston: though, that deals more with Athos than D'Artagnan.
- 1:01:35Peter Eggleston Connor: Sure, so we were gonna do final thoughts.
- 1:01:37Tad Eggleston: in America and space.
- 1:01:39Matt: The animal.
- 1:01:39Tad Eggleston: Sorry, I guess.
- 1:01:40Matt: coming out of this guy's mouth? It's kind of crazy on this page, I just got here. That's wild. Which one? Fish?
- 1:01:45Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, the fish?
- 1:01:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:01:48Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep, yep, yep.
- 1:01:50Matt: It was wild.
- 1:01:54Peter Eggleston Connor: carp.
- 1:01:56Tad Eggleston: Alright, anybody else closing thoughts?
- 1:02:00Peter Eggleston Connor: I think we should go in order of, like, Dylan shall go next, And then Matt…
- 1:02:06Peter Eggleston Connor: And I'll go, and then you can have final thoughts, because you've read this, like, a bajillion times.
- 1:02:12Tad Eggleston: I mean, I've given most of my thoughts, so I might just wrap at that point, but okay. Dylan, Matt, you.
- 1:02:21Dillon: I… I'm so mad that I couldn't finish this before we had to record.
- 1:02:27Matt: Okay, I believe it.
- 1:02:31Peter Eggleston Connor: Bottle thoughts.
- 1:02:31Tad Eggleston: I'm sorry for not warning you exactly, like, the density.
- 1:02:35Dillon: No, that's okay. Like, I… I don't… I mean, I tried to read this as soon as I… as I could, but I just didn't… I just didn't have enough time. It doesn't matter when.
- 1:02:43Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:02:44Dillon: It's, it's… yeah, that's fine.
- 1:02:46Tad Eggleston: Well, but if I'd warned you the density, you might have said, I don't think that that can happen, and we might have read heavy… we might have done heavy metal now instead.
- 1:02:56Dillon: Then.
- 1:02:56Peter Eggleston Connor: the movie.
- 1:02:57Dillon: I wouldn't have had a chance to get started on it.
- 1:02:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, to be perfectly honest, MetalHer launched, like, 200 pages, too, and…
- 1:03:04Tad Eggleston: That's true.
- 1:03:05Peter Eggleston Connor: So…
- 1:03:06Dillon: Yeah, I… I'm… my… I mean, my closing thought is that I'm excited to…
- 1:03:11Dillon: to watch this build on itself, and see… see how everything comes together in the end, because it seems like, up to where I'm at, there's so many things happening, and there's so many moving parts.
- 1:03:21Dillon: But they all… they all are very clearly connected in some way, And so I'm just… I…
- 1:03:30Dillon: I just… I'm just excited to get more of it, is really my closing thought.
- 1:03:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Nice.
- 1:03:37Peter Eggleston Connor: Matt?
- 1:03:38Matt: Oh, yeah, I'll tag right onto Dylan. I'm excited to read Orr, and I'm excited to read Book 2. I just… I want… I want to get all of it. I want… I want to understand it, I want to read it, I want to consume it.
- 1:03:49Matt: This is just good stuff.
- 1:03:54Peter Eggleston Connor: My closing thoughts. I really enjoyed it. I mean, like, I remember reading the first few…
- 1:04:01Peter Eggleston Connor: and you got the copies, and I went out and bought them, and, you know…
- 1:04:05Peter Eggleston Connor: it's a lot of fun doing that, too. And I kinda… a lot of stuff happened after that, so, you know, whatever. But,
- 1:04:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I really hope that, like, my predictions are right, and that Ore has a lot to do with the story. I mean, obviously it's gonna have something just because it's got Ur Queen, but…
- 1:04:28Peter Eggleston Connor: I think that it could be, like, a real good tie-in, and it'll be interesting to see if that happens or not for…
- 1:04:35Peter Eggleston Connor: As we go down the… the… to the next chapter and stuff like that, so…
- 1:04:40Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm excited to read more of it, so…
- 1:04:44Peter Eggleston Connor: I think it's, done a great job of visually and… I don't remember what the…
- 1:04:53Peter Eggleston Connor: word I'm looking for, but, wordily.
- 1:04:57Matt: We're at all started.
- 1:04:58Peter Eggleston Connor: Story, story across. Yeah, I know.
- 1:05:00Matt: priority.
- 1:05:01Dillon: Brutally.
- 1:05:02Matt: I love that!
- 1:05:03Peter Eggleston Connor: I tend not to be a wordsmith, especially when I'm talking.
- 1:05:08Tad Eggleston: I… I am… Blessed.
- 1:05:12Tad Eggleston: to have already read Book 2, A Kiss for Atticus.
- 1:05:16Tad Eggleston: All four issues.
- 1:05:18Tad Eggleston: The first issue, as well as the first softcover edition of Book 1, The Dragon and the Boar, are all going to be in comic shops on July 1st.
- 1:05:31Tad Eggleston: looking forward so much to being able to talk to Liam about this again. I'm hoping I can pin him down for the super spoilery post…
- 1:05:40Tad Eggleston: all of Book for Atticus coming out discussion.
- 1:05:44Tad Eggleston: Like, right away, just so that we don't spend another 3 years trying to find…
- 1:05:50Tad Eggleston: time to talk again, like we did this time. Though he did move from San Francisco back to England in that time, and that did complicate the whole…
- 1:05:59Tad Eggleston: Managing to… To set up a time to talk thing.
- 1:06:03Tad Eggleston: But, yeah.
- 1:06:08Tad Eggleston: I'll say that,
- 1:06:13Tad Eggleston: what comes next isn't quite what I expected, and that made me like it even more, and I'm looking forward to probably reading it a second time before tomorrow.
- 1:06:24Tad Eggleston: Just because…
- 1:06:27Tad Eggleston: it wasn't quite what I expected, and that just made me love this story even more, because it's kind of been…
- 1:06:34Tad Eggleston: almost what every issue has felt like. As soon as I feel like I kind of have a…
- 1:06:40Tad Eggleston: Grasp on where the story's going.
- 1:06:44Tad Eggleston: There's some sort of… Twist, and not, like…
- 1:06:49Tad Eggleston: Not like the M. Night Shyamalan twist, but more just some sort of wrinkle, where you go off in a different direction than you really expected, and that doesn't mean that what you're expecting won't still happen, it's just… it's the side quest that pops up, or the…
- 1:07:05Tad Eggleston: oh, we kinda got to the same spot, but the journey was so much different than I expected it to be, that sort of thing.
- 1:07:13Matt: So you want the Quentin Tarantino twist.
- 1:07:17Tad Eggleston: And always, always, always just so damn beautiful.
- 1:07:22Matt: No.
- 1:07:22Tad Eggleston: Yes, it is.
- 1:07:23Tad Eggleston: And, and, like, also surprising, because, like, I mean, going back to…
- 1:07:30Tad Eggleston: to talking about how he breaks, like, all of the rules that I normally have into my head of, like, what generally makes a good comic. It is so rare for me to think
- 1:07:43Tad Eggleston: Things that are as photorealistic as he sometimes are make good comics, but he pulls it off.
- 1:07:51Tad Eggleston: he manages to still act. He manages to still get that feeling of motion, rather than that static photo image, you know? There's just, like…
- 1:08:02Tad Eggleston: I love Alex Ross on a cover, but half the time when he does interiors, and he doesn't do a lot of interiors, and this is probably part of the reason why, it doesn't work for me.
- 1:08:12Tad Eggleston: And, and, like, I never find myself… Feeling that lack of emotion.
- 1:08:18Tad Eggleston: In… any of Liam's pictures.
- 1:08:23Dillon: You heard it here first, the reason Alex Ross doesn't do interiors is because it doesn't work for TAD.
- 1:08:29Tad Eggleston: No, I don't think that's it.
- 1:08:31Peter Eggleston Connor: No, I don't.
- 1:08:31Tad Eggleston: I don't think that's it at all. I know.
- 1:08:33Dillon: I know, I'm kidding, I'm kidding.
- 1:08:34Tad Eggleston: I think it doesn't work for Alex, because at this point, when he does do interiors, he doesn't do them in the big painted…
- 1:08:42Tad Eggleston: Like, if you read his Fantastic Four story, he did very different art than…
- 1:08:48Tad Eggleston: Than the art that he's known for.
- 1:08:51Tad Eggleston: You know, yep.
- 1:08:54Matt: It's because he listened to you, Ted.
- 1:08:56Tad Eggleston: I doubt it. I mean, it does live nearby, we go to the same comic shop sometimes. The comic shop that I went to before Dr. Ramos opened his.
- 1:09:06Tad Eggleston: So I suppose Charlie could have passed the message.
- 1:09:10Tad Eggleston: But…
- 1:09:12Matt: That's funny.
- 1:09:14Tad Eggleston: it doesn't… doesn't feel like Alex needs my advice, like…
- 1:09:18Matt: Teasing, of course.
- 1:09:21Tad Eggleston: The things that he does well in comics far outweigh the things that aren't my cup of tea. I won't.
- 1:09:28Dillon: Can you imagine?
- 1:09:29Tad Eggleston: I will say that he does badly, I will say, that aren't my cup of tea.
- 1:09:34Dillon: Imagine Alex Ross's entire career has been guided by third-party advice, so he goes to the same comic shop, and Alex asks the comic shop owner what Tad thinks of this.
- 1:09:44Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, man.
- 1:09:46Dillon: Can you ask Tad about this, and let me know what he says?
- 1:09:50Tad Eggleston: I saw that 22 Panels sign in your… in your.
- 1:09:53Matt: Wind gig.
- 1:09:53Tad Eggleston: What's that all about?
- 1:09:55Matt: really cheap.
- 1:09:56Tad Eggleston: You know what he thinks of my work?
- 1:10:01Dillon: Anyway… Yeah, good stuff all around.
- 1:10:05Tad Eggleston: So, Matt, you don't get to close it this time, because… because this isn't the heavy metal one. So I'm gonna say for the… the joy…
- 1:10:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Matt, just close it. Go ahead.
- 1:10:16Dillon: Hey, Matt, quick.
- 1:10:16Tad Eggleston: Enjoy Resistance, Hope, and Survival Book Club on 22 panels. We will see you after the next page.
- 1:10:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Matt.
