Transcript
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to today's episode of the Daily Writer Podcast.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: As I mentioned the last few episodes, today's episode is part of a series that we're doing called The Writer's Path: Seven Steps to Building a Writing Business.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And if you're just not joining us for this episode, I encourage you to go back to the June 27th episode to get the most value out of this series.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: So far, we've talked about getting specific on your core message and your audience and building the platforms where you're going to share your content.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Now let's look at milestone number three, which is write consistent content that helps your readers.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Here's why this is so important.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Whenever you write consistent material, specifically doing blog posts or articles, it helps your search engine optimization, otherwise known as SEO, and it also builds your audience.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: It's really hard to build an audience and to create loyal readers without actually producing content consistently.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: So this is like the fundamental foundational thing that we've got to do is you've got to write consistently.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: So many people want the results of having an audience without actually doing the work, but you've got to do the writing.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: You've got to sit down, you've got to put in the time and effort, and you have to write the material.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: You've got to do it consistently.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And this is a big problem for a lot of writers.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: The consistency is tough, but it's also what gives you credibility over time and allows you to build up a library of content.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Believe me, I have been through times when I have not been consistent, and it really hurts your growth.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: And it also, it just kind of makes you feel bad about yourself.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: It's hard to get motivated and it's hard to get excited whenever you're constantly stopping and starting and stopping and starting and like getting everything going again for the 17th, thousandth time.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: You know, we've all probably been there.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: But if you're listening to this right now in this moment, I want you to commit to making consistent content and not stopping, even when you don't feel like it.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Now, one of the great benefits of creating content consistently is that you can repurpose the material into other formats like podcasts, email newsletters, books, courses, speeches, training, and much, much more.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: In fact, what you're hearing me do right now in this series, this started out as a course that I'm doing in the Daily Writer Club.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Every couple weeks, uh, we do a call where I'm covering one of these topics on here.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: And what you're hearing on today's episode is one section of a call that I did.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: So I write out everything that I'm gonna do on these calls, and then this represents like five minutes worth of that call because now I've taken it and I've rewritten a little bit of it, I've added to it.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: But this series actually started out as something that I did in the Daily Writer Club.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Once I'm done with this series, I'm gonna go back and record all the videos and package this into an online course that I'm gonna sell separately.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, if people want to buy that separately from joining the club, it's also gonna be available in the club just for members who are already paying to be there.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: So, what you typically hear on the podcast is stuff that I am either using elsewhere or I've used elsewhere and I'm importing it into the podcast.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: So pretty much nothing that I do on the podcast is standalone material except for the interviews.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I am always either reusing that material other places and it started out on the podcast or it started out somewhere else and I'm reusing on the podcast, sometimes in multiple different places.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Now, the big challenge in doing all this and writing consistent content is that it's really hard to stay steady.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: It's very easy to get excited about your new material or your new platform, and you write for a while and then you quit.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: You give up.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: But if you can just stay consistent, you're gonna be ahead of 95% of other writers, I promise.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: Now, as far as a schedule, I recommend a baseline of creating something once a week.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Now, if you want to get more specific, I would say to me, a great place to start is doing a 500-word blog post once a week.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: And if you can do that for a year, you'll have enough material for a book if you have organized the material in such a way that you can compile it into a book.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: So in other words, kind of outline your book beforehand, break it up into 500 word chunks, share those over a year's time, and then voila, after a year, you're gonna have a whole book's worth of content, 26,000 words, which is which is enough for a full-length book.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: About 120 pages or so, depending on how you format it and edit it and and all that stuff.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: So just a thought there.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: So I hope that this is encouraging to you that writing consistently doesn't have to be a huge pain, and it doesn't have to take that much time either.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Literally, you can sit down, you can write a 500-word blog post draft in about an hour.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: It's really not that difficult.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: And if you know what you want to say ahead of time, take a walk around the block and just uh dictate a draft into your smartphone.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: You can dictate 500 words in probably about 10 or 15 minutes really easily.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Then you've got a rough draft there.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: So lots and lots of ways you could do this, and I don't want to overwhelm you with ideas, but I just want to implant the idea of writing consistently.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: If you come away from this episode more committed than ever to just creating consistent content, at the very least on a weekly basis, you're going to be way, way ahead.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question What could your writing business look like a year from now if you wrote a blog post every week and shared it with others?
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Something to think about for sure.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Hey, thanks for listening, and I'll see you on tomorrow's episode.
