- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:18For everyone that is still watching or listening, after
- 0:23last week's or no, after last episodes, super, super long
- 0:28episode and very controversial thoughts, I'm glad that you are
- 0:33here. And so today we are in First
- 0:35Timothy chapter 3 and we're going to be looking at verses
- 0:39one through 7. The letter of first Timothy is
- 0:42from Paul, the apostle to his son in the faith, Timothy, who
- 0:46is pastoring, leading the church there in Ephesus.
- 0:50And Paul had left Timothy there so that Timothy would be able
- 0:56to, if you will, contradict some of the false teachers that had
- 1:02been teaching there in the church that Paul had started.
- 1:05And there was just wicked both behavior and doctrines that were
- 1:10taking place in the church. And we've looked at that over
- 1:13the past several episodes, teaching of myths and
- 1:17genealogies and speculations, people that had shipwrecked
- 1:22their faith, people that were argumentative, people that were
- 1:28angry, people that were being disruptive within the church.
- 1:34And so now in verses one through 7, as we have heard a lot of
- 1:39what the church is not supposed to be like and who should not be
- 1:45teachers in the church at Ephesus, like Hymenaeus and
- 1:48Alexander that we read about at the end of chapter 1.
- 1:52Now Paul gives to Timothy, though Timothy is pastoring
- 1:56there at the moment, he gives him an instruction for you need
- 2:01more good, godly qualified individuals that would serve
- 2:07along with you and that would be able to serve in the church
- 2:11after Timothy was gone. And so let's read through verses
- 2:151. Let's read verses one through 7
- 2:18and I'm super excited. This is a portion of scripture
- 2:21that I've spent a lot of time on and I'll I'll stop there for my
- 2:27talking for one moment. Verse #1 This saying is
- 2:30trustworthy. If anyone aspires to be an
- 2:34overseer, he desires a noble work.
- 2:37An overseer therefore must be above reproach.
- 2:41The husband of one wife, self controlled, sensible,
- 2:45respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not an excessive drinker,
- 2:51not a bully, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not greedy.
- 2:55He must manage his own household competently and have his
- 2:59children under control with all dignity.
- 3:02If anyone does not know how to manage his own household, how
- 3:06will he take care of God's church?
- 3:08He must not be a new convert or he might become conceited and
- 3:12incur the same condemnation as the devil.
- 3:16Furthermore, he must have a good reputation among outsiders so
- 3:20that he does not fall into disgrace and the devil's trap.
- 3:26OK, one thing I want to note here.
- 3:28Notice that Paul doesn't give to Timothy in this portion of
- 3:31Scripture a job description of everything that a pastor and
- 3:37elder and overseer should be doing, if you will.
- 3:43This list of things is more about who is the type of person
- 3:48that an overseer is. So I want to start off with
- 3:52verse #1 because I need to define some terms real quick so
- 3:57that As for walking together, we can get in the right place.
- 4:00He says this saying is trustworthy.
- 4:02If anyone aspires to be an overseer, he desires a noble
- 4:08work. Paul here does not give where
- 4:12the saying is from. He just says this is a
- 4:17trustworthy, this is a a good and a real thing.
- 4:21This is the same type of thing that he said in chapter 1 where
- 4:24he says, here's a faithful saying that's worthy of all
- 4:28acceptance that Christ Jesus came into the world to save
- 4:31sinners. And then Paul adds, and I am the
- 4:34chief of those sinners. And so here there's another
- 4:37saying that Paul says is trustworthy, that if anyone
- 4:40aspires to be an overseer, he despires a noble, he desires a
- 4:45noble work. Now, we don't often use the
- 4:49phrase overseer in regards to church leadership.
- 4:55Depending on your background, you might, you may have come
- 4:58from perhaps like me, from a background where there was a
- 5:03pastor of a church and there were several deacons that were
- 5:09all male. And that might have been the
- 5:13church leadership that you grew up with.
- 5:16When I became a Southern Baptist couple years ago, I heard about
- 5:19a, a type of church leadership that started in the 1900s called
- 5:26a church council. And this was, you had a pastor
- 5:30and you had the deacons of the church and then you had some
- 5:34different like ministry directors, or I think sometimes
- 5:39they may even have been called like a minister, like a minister
- 5:42of music or a minister of youth or something like that.
- 5:47And, and maybe that was a way that church leadership was
- 5:51structured. If you came from perhaps a
- 5:54Presbyterian background, you would have grown up with both
- 5:58teaching elders and ruling elders.
- 6:01Normally one teaching elder somewhat synonymous with what a
- 6:05pastor would be in, in some Baptist churches.
- 6:09And then you would have ruling elders as well as deacons.
- 6:13And then depending on which kind of group of Presbyterians you're
- 6:18with, there might have been just male deacons or male and female
- 6:21deacons. And then over and above that,
- 6:24you have the different presbyteries and synods, which
- 6:27would be groups of those elders, you know, kind of going up the
- 6:33ranks. And so lots of different people
- 6:36have different church leadership structures that they know.
- 6:39I'll, I'll put kind of our cards on the table here at Tabernacle.
- 6:44We have what's called a plurality of elders.
- 6:47So we have in Baptist theology, we believe that there are two
- 6:54offices within the local church. There are pastors and there are
- 6:58deacons. Or if you want to use the words
- 7:02that are more common in the New Testament, we have elders and we
- 7:06have deacons and scripture will utilize the words pastor, which
- 7:13is the word shepherd. It's slightly frustrating to me
- 7:18the the word pastor only shows up like one time as a noun
- 7:25within the New Testament and sometimes it doesn't even show
- 7:29up one time if you translate it consistently as shepherd.
- 7:34So Jesus says I am the Good Shepherd.
- 7:37That's the word poeman and that is a that's the word translated
- 7:42shepherd. I don't 100% know at what point
- 7:47someone said OK, well we'll use pastor.
- 7:49I assume it came in from another language into English and so it
- 7:54was often used to differentiate between what a shepherd is and
- 7:59then this person that leads a church.
- 8:03But it's the same word. Pointman is shepherd.
- 8:06And then very rarely within the New Testament will you ever see
- 8:10it translated as pastor. And many translations simply
- 8:15translate it as shepherd the whole time through.
- 8:17So while that is the verbiage that I grew up with, that, you
- 8:23know, if people live, someone has to ask me like, hey, what do
- 8:25you do? Say, oh, I'm a pastor.
- 8:27I'm the pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
- 8:30It is technically the least used phrase for the leadership of a
- 8:36local church. The most common word that is
- 8:40used to describe the leaders of a local church are the elders,
- 8:45which is a group of men that have these descriptions of what
- 8:51their life and what their character is like.
- 8:54That they have been called by the Lord and by the congregation
- 8:57and by the other elders to serve in this leadership capacity.
- 9:03There in the local church then the other word that is used in
- 9:06the New Testament, so you have shepherd or pastor elder and
- 9:10then you have this word here overseer.
- 9:14This would be the Greek word Episcopal.
- 9:17That's so the word for shepherd or pastor is poeman in Greek.
- 9:24The word for elder is presbuteros, which is where you
- 9:28get the term presbytery or Presbyterian because it's those
- 9:33elders together and then you have the phrase like
- 9:39Episcopalian. So I think at least an urban
- 9:42legend, Pepsi Cola was named that because the guy that
- 9:49created the soda had a crush on a minister's daughter and the
- 9:53minister was Episcopalian. And so the guy, you know, took
- 9:58the letters of Episcopalian and made Pepsi Cola.
- 10:01I don't know if that's true or not.
- 10:03That's at least a story that I heard.
- 10:05But here at Episcopos, this is one that is an overseer, they
- 10:10are a ruler. It is your job foreman.
- 10:13It is the person that overseas everything that is going on in a
- 10:18particular place. And so the an Episcopalian form
- 10:28of church government says whatever the Episcopos says
- 10:33goes, whatever the overseer or older translations, whatever the
- 10:37Bishop says, goes. So if the Bishop says, all
- 10:42right, I'm trying to think of like a random church decision.
- 10:47Oh, actually, this is helpful. In an Episcopal structure, a
- 10:51singular man is in charge of the church and can bring members in
- 10:56and can remove members from the church.
- 10:59So kind of the ultimate Episcopalian model has as its
- 11:04head the Pope over the Catholic Church.
- 11:08And so that would be an Episcopalian model where there's
- 11:10one person at the head. You can also have what's termed
- 11:16a mono episcopacy, which would be 1 pastor and whatever that
- 11:19one pastor says goes. So that's Episcopalian form of
- 11:24church government. Then there's Presbyterian, which
- 11:26would say whatever the elders of a church together decide, that's
- 11:31what would happen. So the elders can can make a
- 11:34person a member of a church or can remove a person from
- 11:37membership at a church. Then there is what we would have
- 11:41as Baptist, which is Congregational Church quality,
- 11:44which does not mean that the congregation makes every
- 11:46decision, but when it comes to the most ultimate decisions of
- 11:50the church, which is the leadership, the membership, and
- 11:54the stewardship of the church. That the congregation is in
- 11:58charge of utilizing those keys to the Kingdom that Jesus talks
- 12:02about in Matthew 18. That we say all together, yes,
- 12:05we do believe that this person is a true Christian.
- 12:10They've professed their faith in Christ, they've been baptized,
- 12:14they are in agreement with our beliefs as a church, and so we
- 12:19are bringing them together into membership.
- 12:21It's not just the decision of Brian, It's not just the
- 12:25decision of the elders. This is as a congregation, we
- 12:28are bringing them in together. Or when someone is removed from
- 12:31membership that I as the pastor, I can't remove anyone from
- 12:35membership at Tabernacle. The elders cannot remove anyone
- 12:38from membership at Tabernacle. That's a choice that together
- 12:42the congregation makes. Or when it comes to church
- 12:45leadership that I, as I told our elders when we adopted elders
- 12:52went through that process at the end of 2024 and then beginning
- 12:56of or have the congregation vote on that at the end of 2024 and
- 13:01then they came into their roles as overseers, as elders at the
- 13:06beginning of 2025. I told them I cannot make you
- 13:12guys elders, only the congregation can do that because
- 13:15that's something that the Lord has.
- 13:19Paul in Galatians 1 blames the Galatian churches for the false
- 13:26teachers that were there. He says, listen, if me and my
- 13:31crew or an Angel from heaven or anyone preaches any other gospel
- 13:35to you than the gospel that you received, which was Jesus by
- 13:39grace through faith, He says if anyone preaches any other gospel
- 13:43to you, let him be accursed. And so there's an onus put on
- 13:49the congregation to say you are responsible for the leadership
- 13:53that you have. And if you have wicked rulers,
- 13:55if you have ungodly leaders, this is your fault.
- 14:00And so if it's their fault, if they have bad teachers, then we
- 14:04can make the assumption from Scripture that they have a
- 14:07responsibility or they have a say in who their leaders are.
- 14:12So the local church is responsible.
- 14:14The congregation at large is responsible for the leadership,
- 14:18membership and stewardship of the local church.
- 14:22And they are led by their elders, by their overseers,
- 14:27which is hear what Paul says. If anyone aspires to be an
- 14:30overseer, he desires a noble work.
- 14:32It is a good thing to be a pastor, to be an elder of a
- 14:36local church. I also meant to mention this.
- 14:39So these, these 3 words, pastor, shepherd, elder and overseer,
- 14:48this is 1 office. We don't believe that there are
- 14:51three different offices within the local church that comprise,
- 14:56if you will, the senior leadership.
- 14:57We believe that this is one thing and we can read about that
- 15:00in Acts 20 and in First Peter 5. And I've spent a lot of time on
- 15:03those other portions of scripture.
- 15:05You can look up those episodes again, that's Acts 20 and first
- 15:08Peter 5I talk about both of those at length.
- 15:11So to be an overseer, to be an elder, you have to, at the very
- 15:17least, the most basic thing that you need is a desire to be an
- 15:22elder or a pastor or an overseer.
- 15:25If someone doesn't want to be a pastor, they should not be a
- 15:28pastor. And so that was one of the
- 15:30things, even as I was training our prospective elders at
- 15:34Tabernacle was, hey, if you believe that this is something
- 15:39that the Lord might have for you that he, he wants for you,
- 15:42wonderful. If you're like, oh, I don't
- 15:44really want to do this. I don't feel comfortable with
- 15:47this. I was like, that's OK.
- 15:48Like that. That means God has not called
- 15:50you to it. So there has to be a desire, the
- 15:54most basic thing. Now all of the qualifications
- 15:57stack on top of that, or if you will, the the character traits
- 16:01accompany that desire. But it starts with a desire.
- 16:04And if you have a pastor, if you have elders in your local
- 16:07church, be thankful for them that they had a desire to serve
- 16:12you having been in full time ministry.
- 16:15Now this is my 8th or 9th year of full time ministry.
- 16:21I I can tell you guys ministry is not an easy Rd.
- 16:25Praying for people navigating through hardships.
- 16:32Honestly just the struggle of fighting Satan in myself and in
- 16:37my family and in my church and in my congregation like that is
- 16:43a rough it is a tough road. And so if you have someone that
- 16:47is passionate about it and they they love you, they love the
- 16:52Lord, they love the work that God has called them to man.
- 16:55Be thankful for your pastor. Be thankful for your elders.
- 17:00It's not an easy thing. And we'll see some of that even
- 17:02in the end verses as Satan is mentioned again and again as
- 17:07being in opposition to what the church leaders are doing.
- 17:14Also in chapter 3 verse #1 here, if anyone aspires to be an
- 17:24overseer says he desires a noble work.
- 17:28As we mentioned last episode, the pronouns that are used of a
- 17:33pastor or elder or overseer in the church is exclusively male.
- 17:37Within the New Testament. The women have many amazing
- 17:41works that God has for them to do.
- 17:44God has reserved the office of male only, the office of elder
- 17:48only for qualified men. Verse #2 An overseer, therefore,
- 17:55must be above reproach. This does not mean that no one
- 17:59has anything bad to say about him.
- 18:01A pastor will never ever be perfect.
- 18:05Someone will always have something to say.
- 18:08Hey, he, he's got this kind of mess up in his armor there.
- 18:12He's got a, you know, this flaw or he misspoke in this instance,
- 18:18or I didn't like this decision that he made.
- 18:21If being quote UN quote above reproach meant that you had no
- 18:25sin, then no person could ever be a pastor.
- 18:28The thought here is that there are no handles that a person
- 18:33could grab onto to say his defining characteristic.
- 18:38Or he has a if you will, he has a besetting sin.
- 18:42He has a sin that he holds onto that typifies his life.
- 18:47That to know him is to be like, man, that dude is a liar.
- 18:52That dude is a drunk. That dude is this, and for that
- 18:57statement to be able to be true, that everyone would go, Oh yeah,
- 19:01that is who he is. That should never typify an
- 19:05overseer. Now, in this list, I think as I
- 19:08mentioned as well, both in Acts 20 and First Peter 5 and in
- 19:11Titus One, these lists of characteristics are not
- 19:18something that's like unique for pastors that are not also to be
- 19:23true about every single Christian.
- 19:26A pastor is not a super Christian, but he ought to be a
- 19:31faithful Christian. So an overseer must be above
- 19:35reproach. There's nothing that you can
- 19:37grab onto in his life that you would say yes.
- 19:42This sin he holds onto, he embraces it.
- 19:46He refuses to repent of it. He's not seeking for the Lord's
- 19:49victory over it. He just loves this sin.
- 19:52A pastor must be above reproach. He says, the husband of one
- 19:57wife. I've read a lot on this
- 20:00particular phrase. I know many people across the
- 20:03years have had many different interpretations on it.
- 20:05The clearest and most direct interpretation is that he ought
- 20:10to be married. To only one woman, and if you
- 20:14will, only one woman at a time. That this is a person who is
- 20:19typified by his marital fidelity to his spouse.
- 20:23This is a person that when it comes to his sexual ethics,
- 20:27there is no doubt he is faithful to his spouse and to only her.
- 20:34If you have any questions about that message, comment, whatever.
- 20:39I've done a lot of reading on that, but I don't want to spend
- 20:42a ton of time on that today. He is to be self controlled, one
- 20:45of the fruit of the Spirit, as we all should be self
- 20:48controlled. Also, we ought to all be a
- 20:50faithful to our spouses. It says that he is to be
- 20:54sensible. Certainly that ought to be a
- 20:58descriptive of every one of us, but especially our church
- 21:00leaders. They ought to be sensible
- 21:02people. He ought to be respectable.
- 21:06I know I am 28 years old. I think by the time this episode
- 21:11comes out, I'll be encroaching on 29 years old.
- 21:15I know that I'm young, but I hope that the way that I talk,
- 21:18the way that I sing, the way that I worship, the way that I
- 21:22pray with others communicates respectability.
- 21:26That the office of an elder is something that I ought to hold
- 21:33with some fear and trepidation and respect and awe, knowing all
- 21:37right, if I'm going to care for people's souls, they ought to
- 21:41feel like they can respect me. And so I need to watch my
- 21:45language. I need to watch my actions and
- 21:50my time and my calendar and thousand different things.
- 21:52Are you a respectable person if you go, oh, I don't really care
- 21:56if people respect me Here it is listed as a good trait,
- 22:00something that we can pursue. The Holy Spirit of God lives
- 22:03within you. And so being respectable doesn't
- 22:06mean that you have to just be a stick in the mud and be stoic
- 22:10and be grumpy. But are you respectable?
- 22:14Are people able to say, man, I really respect this about you?
- 22:19Let's have that as something we want to pursue here.
- 22:23Hospitable, that someone wants to spend time with others, wants
- 22:27to care for others, will have others over into their home.
- 22:31I got to be really honest with you guys.
- 22:33This is something that I always want to be doing more with
- 22:38toddlers in the house. Being able to, you know, manage
- 22:42everything and make sure there's not crumbs on everything can
- 22:45sometimes be a difficulty. But I love whenever I'm able to
- 22:48have people over or even when I'm able to be hospitable at
- 22:52like a restaurant or something, and for people to be able to
- 22:56spend time with me and I can vest the word into them and that
- 22:59they know at the end of it, OK, you know, Brian will take care
- 23:03of me. He's hospitable.
- 23:05And so he is hosting me for this meal.
- 23:07This isn't something that I have to pay for.
- 23:10This is something that I am being cared for body and soul in
- 23:14this moment. And so I want to encourage you,
- 23:16especially if God's given you a good house, have people over.
- 23:20And that can be something that is wonderful, like have him over
- 23:23for a meal, have him over for a game night, have him over and
- 23:26enjoy, I'll say, enjoy some drinks together.
- 23:30I don't mean in the verse three sense where it says not an
- 23:33excessive drinker, not that kind of thing.
- 23:35You know, don't, don't, don't be getting drunk with people, but
- 23:38have people over for coffee. Have people over, have a
- 23:41wonderful time together, be hospitable.
- 23:45And that's one of the ways in which you can show God's love to
- 23:47others. Says that he needs to be able to
- 23:51teach. Just because a person is wise
- 23:53and has many other wonderful qualities does not necessarily
- 23:57mean that they ought to be an elder, that they need to be an
- 24:02overseer. In fact, Scripture would tell us
- 24:05being able to teach a a capability to communicate God's
- 24:09word, whether in, you know, kind of a preaching formal setting or
- 24:13in individual discipleship and things like that is the
- 24:16differentiation between an elder and a Deacon that a Deacon is
- 24:21never called on to teach in in any setting.
- 24:25But a elder is like that's that's their role within the
- 24:31local church is they are those that are teaching.
- 24:33Even as we look last episode at chapter 2 and verse #12 that we
- 24:38exercise authority over the congregation.
- 24:43And the biggest way that we do that is through our teaching.
- 24:48If you are ever interested in becoming an elder or a pastor,
- 24:54you have to be able to teach. So learn how to do that.
- 24:57Teach your family, teach in a kids class.
- 25:01Ask for opportunities from your elders to be able to teach in
- 25:04maybe a men's group or a small group or something.
- 25:08That would be, you know, kind of get your feet under you.
- 25:12I, I preached messages even at, you know, nursing homes and in,
- 25:17in teen class and, you know, different things like that.
- 25:20And so I learned how to teach through teaching as, as well as
- 25:25different classes and courses and Bible college and all that
- 25:28kind of stuff. But it is important for a pastor
- 25:31to be able to teach verse #3 not an excessive drinker, not a
- 25:37bully, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not greedy.
- 25:42Here in verse 3, instead of all of the good things that a a
- 25:46pastor is supposed to be, verse #3 gives Here's what elders
- 25:50should not be. They should not be here an
- 25:53excessive drinker. There should not be drunkenness
- 25:56that typifies the leaders of a local church.
- 26:00And we know certainly even from what the Pharisee said about
- 26:04Jesus, they said, listen, Jesus came along and he is a wine
- 26:07Bibber. That just being accused of
- 26:10something does not make it reality for you.
- 26:14But here someone is not dominated by their passions,
- 26:18they're not dominated by alcohol, they're not a bully,
- 26:22but gentle, that if a person is a bully, they should not be a
- 26:26pastor. And very unfortunately, people
- 26:28with strong personalities often want to accumulate leadership
- 26:31roles for themselves. And so many church leaders have
- 26:35been bullies. But that goes directly against
- 26:37what God's Word says here. And he should not domineer over
- 26:42people, but he needs to be gentle in the way that he deals
- 26:45with people. And then it says, not
- 26:47quarrelsome. An argumentative person makes
- 26:49for an awful elder. An elder shouldn't just be like
- 26:55a yes man of always agreeing, but constantly arguing is not a
- 27:00good trait to have. And it says not greedy, not
- 27:05dominated by financial funds. And even as a pastor, I always
- 27:09have a very holy fear. It's, it's why I work the amount
- 27:13of hours that I work. I am zealous that I would earn
- 27:18every penny that I am given by the Lord's church.
- 27:22And so I want to be faithful. And I don't want to be like,
- 27:27well, listen, I really want this, you know, I want this
- 27:31Bucati, I want this yacht, I want this, you know, $1,000,000
- 27:36house. And so you guys just need to,
- 27:38you know, give me more and more and more money.
- 27:41No, I, I firmly believe that pastors should be cared for by
- 27:45their church financially, even as we would read in First
- 27:48Timothy 5. And I think it's about verse 17
- 27:51talks about that, about caring well financially for those
- 27:56elders that are laboring in teaching and preaching.
- 28:00And so I think we should take care of our pastors, but pastors
- 28:05then have an impetus to not be greedy that no one would ever be
- 28:09like, oh man, Brian just keeps asking, you know, for a little
- 28:12more off the top and different things.
- 28:15He's like, hey, you know, I'm really hurting.
- 28:17Would you give me some money, you know, bypassing the the
- 28:21church in order to try and get funds.
- 28:24That kind of stuff is just abominable and totally unlike
- 28:28Jesus. I got to be honest with you
- 28:30guys, this is such a full section of scripture.
- 28:35I'm going to need to hop back into verses 4 through 7 next
- 28:39episode because I don't want to hold you guys for 37 minutes
- 28:44again. So we're going to talk tomorrow
- 28:47about how the home is the testing ground for pastors in
- 28:53the local church and that the way that we lead our homes is
- 28:57the way that we are called to lead the Church of God.
- 29:00So I'm looking forward to it. It is a great topic, but looking
- 29:04forward to diving into that with you next time.
- 29:06See you next episode.
