- 0:24I'll just run through the preamble of Alcoholics
- 0:27Anonymous. Alcoholics Anonymous is a
- 0:29fellowship of people who share the experience, strengthen hope
- 0:33with each other that they may solve their common problems, and
- 0:37help with us to recover from alcoholism.
- 0:40The only requirement for membership is the desire to stop
- 0:43drinking and no dues of fees. Fair membership.
- 0:46We are self supporting through our own contributions.
- 0:50He is not alive with any sect, denomination, politics,
- 0:54organization or institution, does not wish to engage in any
- 0:58controversy, neither endorses or oppose any causes.
- 1:03Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help.
- 1:06Other Alcoholics are chiefs of Brady.
- 1:09My name is Michelle and I am an alcoholic.
- 1:12I just want to thank Joy for asking me to share tonight.
- 1:17I get in a lot of fear about sharing when I first came in my
- 1:23brain didn't work so well just being really sober, I guess, and
- 1:28I struggled for the words in my brain to come out my mouth and I
- 1:32guess a lot of fear was was in that.
- 1:34But one of the suggestions was to share when I was asked to
- 1:38share And you know, you're Fast forward to now.
- 1:41I've had a lot of practice with it.
- 1:42So it was interesting driving to this meeting tonight.
- 1:47It's been many, many years since I've been here.
- 1:51My oldest, my sobriety day, is the 30th of October 2015.
- 1:56I have a Home group which is Kilburn on a Tuesday night.
- 1:59You're all welcome to come. It's a speaker meeting.
- 2:04I have a service position in that group.
- 2:06I do minimum at least three meetings a week, if not more.
- 2:12I have a sponsor. I sponsor women and that's kind
- 2:16of the foundation of my recovery.
- 2:19And yeah, I was driving to this meeting today and I used to come
- 2:23to this meeting every week for the first two years of my
- 2:26recovery. And there was a few reasons why
- 2:30I came here. And it's interesting reflecting
- 2:32on it. I struggled to read when I came
- 2:35in. I can read, but I just struggled
- 2:37with that. And I lived down South and I
- 2:41avoided that Wednesday night meeting because it was a big
- 2:46book study. So I avoided that one because I
- 2:49didn't want to read. So I get on the bus and I come
- 2:51here and then I bring my kids as well.
- 2:56And then I would never get asked to share, which I loved.
- 3:00I could sit in this room and I'd sit in the corner and hide.
- 3:03I wouldn't write my name in the book.
- 3:06And that's what brought me here for two years.
- 3:08And I'm so, I'm so grateful for that because I got to hear both
- 3:14of those readings for two years in a row, not really
- 3:17understanding what that meant, but it kind of kind of got in my
- 3:22brain somehow. And now I can sit here and
- 3:25listen to that. And I did some writing for, I
- 3:28came here with some stuff with my kids and I, I think I need to
- 3:33make an amends to my daughter. Like I wasn't willing to see
- 3:36that. But after listening to that,
- 3:38just then through joy speaking, that it something just really
- 3:43went from head to heart. So yeah, I, I came into
- 3:48Alcoholics Anonymous because my life fell apart.
- 3:52I couldn't stop drinking. Yeah, IA lot of consequences
- 3:59were happening. I had a lot of things removed.
- 4:01I went to multiple rehabs. I didn't want to come to AA to
- 4:05begin with because I thought I was better than AAI knew I was
- 4:09alcoholic, but I just didn't want this to be the solution.
- 4:12I wanted to find something else and just the usual psychologist,
- 4:16psychiatrist, rehabs, meditation groups like all those kinds of
- 4:21things. And I could, I was just saying
- 4:25before I could always stop drinking for a period of time,
- 4:29but I could never stay stopped. And I'd done 3 rehabs pretty
- 4:35much. And on that last rehab they were
- 4:4012 step based. They didn't do the steps in
- 4:42there, but they were definitely 12 step AA based.
- 4:45And they took us to lots of meetings and I guess I had a
- 4:47little mini surrender in there about coming to AA.
- 4:50And yeah, came in and came in so desperate and so many
- 4:59consequences of stuff that was taken away.
- 5:02And I couldn't, I couldn't live out inside the world.
- 5:07But I also didn't want to be here.
- 5:09But I had nowhere else to go. And I'm just so grateful for
- 5:13that desperation I had just to be here.
- 5:16And it was suggested to do 90 meetings in 90 days.
- 5:19And I remember coming back and sitting on the bus thinking,
- 5:23what have I got to lose? It's just 90 days, what have I
- 5:26got to lose? And I'm, I guess those little
- 5:29moments of just like head to heart of just that willingness
- 5:33to show up and, and they made some really good suggestions in
- 5:37that rehab. They were like, get a sponsor,
- 5:39get a Home group, do the suggested things, do the steps,
- 5:45get a service position. And, and I pretty much did all
- 5:48of that. But before I came in to a a I am
- 5:54drugs was a part of my story as well.
- 5:57And I remember sitting on the bus in rehab going to a meeting
- 6:02and half the bus was, you know, the addicts and the other half
- 6:05the bus was Alcoholics. And the addicts were giving
- 6:10grief to the Alcoholics, calling them bed wetters.
- 6:13And the addicts just looked really cooler.
- 6:15So I didn't want to be an alcoholic, just I wanted to be
- 6:18an addict. I just, it was cooler.
- 6:20I just thought being alcoholic was really uncool.
- 6:23And that's just where my headspace was at the time.
- 6:26And even though my counsellor in the rehab was AA with a drug,
- 6:34you know, story as well, which I could relate to and just heavily
- 6:37suggested I come into AA. But I looked for a sponsor in NA
- 6:41and I just couldn't find one. I couldn't, I, I don't even know
- 6:45what I was looking for. I think I was just listening and
- 6:48I heard a solution in a in AA and eventually I found a sponsor
- 6:55in AA and I was still doing both fellowships.
- 6:59And then I started getting in a bit of trouble in NA chasing all
- 7:02the boys and things like that. And she just made a suggestion
- 7:04that I just stick with AA for either 12 months or around the
- 7:09steps. And I'm just grateful that I
- 7:11did. I just, I was just that
- 7:13desperate and not willing to do that and I didn't stay sober
- 7:19straight away. I think I got about about just
- 7:22over 30 days up and, and I relapsed and I just think that
- 7:28was the relapse I needed to have.
- 7:30And I really struggled drinking and thinking about AIAI was
- 7:37rattling around in my head and it just, it was hard like you
- 7:42like just something was telling me there's there's a solution in
- 7:46there. This is where you're going to
- 7:47get sober and this is not working anymore.
- 7:50And it didn't feel that hole in the soul anymore.
- 7:53I just remember the alcohol just was not working.
- 7:55And I just remember ringing my sponsor drunk and she said just
- 8:00get to a meeting, just get to a meeting.
- 8:03And I did And I was just gobsmacked that I was able to
- 8:07sit in a meeting drunk. Like I, I didn't, I didn't know.
- 8:11I thought there were rules. I thought there were AI rules
- 8:14and you weren't allowed to do that.
- 8:15And well, it is Alcoholics anonymously on that.
- 8:18And that's OK. And I just got I just got loved
- 8:21back to life and I definitely always believed in God.
- 8:28And besides those reasons, I just told you about getting to
- 8:31this meeting. Another thing that I really
- 8:33liked about this meeting is when I looked at the meetings, this
- 8:37just said that spiritual concept meeting.
- 8:39And I thought I need some kind of spiritual stuff in my life.
- 8:42I like the name. I'm gonna that's another reason
- 8:44why I came here as well. And yeah, I just remember
- 8:48sitting here just listening to people's journeys of how they
- 8:51made that connection with a higher power.
- 8:53And I didn't understand it, but I understand today.
- 8:58I get, I get that connection by working through the steps and
- 9:02helping others. And yes, I always believed in
- 9:07God, but what I didn't understand is I just never
- 9:10trusted God as a kid. I remember getting on my knees
- 9:15and praying and no one ever told me to do that.
- 9:19And it's just things like, you know, the Nike, I just wanted
- 9:23the Nike sneakers and I wanted to be in the call group at
- 9:25school and, and all that kind of stuff.
- 9:28And, and none of it came true in my time.
- 9:31But in hindsight, all that stuff came true.
- 9:35It was just in God's timing. Everything that I've asked for
- 9:40and my sponsor always says to me, be careful what you pray
- 9:43for. Sure you're praying for
- 9:44yourself, which you shouldn't be praying for yourself, but if you
- 9:46do, be careful what you pray for because it just might come true.
- 9:51And everything I'd say before recovery with my prayers have
- 9:55all come true in recovery. Everything that I asked for
- 9:58before AI has all come true in recovery and learning, learning
- 10:03to trust God is being one of the hardest things.
- 10:07I, I thought the first year was hard, which it was like getting
- 10:11sober was really hard, but letting go and letting God has,
- 10:16I think has been another level of so many surrenders.
- 10:20And I just remember being in early recovery and someone would
- 10:25just go, let go and let God and I'll be like, well, how do you
- 10:28do that? How like tell me, I don't
- 10:31understand. Like if I could just let go and
- 10:34like God, I would, if I could just stop drinking, I would, but
- 10:38I just physically can't do it. But it is a process.
- 10:43And it is that discovery process that you get by going through
- 10:47the steps. And I remember doing my third
- 10:51step prayer with my sponsor and she said to me, just pick a,
- 10:57pick a place that you know, to pick anywhere that you that
- 11:02feels comfortable for you. And, and we'll go there.
- 11:04And I picked this spot at the beach that I used to go to when
- 11:10I was in self pity when my drinking and I'd go down there
- 11:13and drink and just cry my heart out pour me.
- 11:16And I went there and we're down at the beach and there's lots of
- 11:20people around and she's like, OK, so get on your knees and
- 11:23we'll hold hands and we'll stay this side.
- 11:25The third step prayer. And she didn't even warn me
- 11:27about it, But I felt so embarrassed.
- 11:30I just just to do something like that in public like that, in
- 11:36hindsight, it's one of the best things that's ever happened to
- 11:39me. I didn't understand it in the
- 11:40moment. And I remember her saying, her
- 11:44saying to me now, like with this step, it's about making a
- 11:48decision. I didn't understand it.
- 11:50I do today, but I didn't understand it.
- 11:52And I was like, how do you even make a decision?
- 11:55How do you even make a decision to turn your will and your life
- 11:58over to God? And, and I just continued on
- 12:02doing the steps. And you know, I'd finished and I
- 12:06was a couple years sober and I think I was still so crazy, but
- 12:13like really, really crazy. But what the steps, what that
- 12:17first round of the steps allowed me to do was was get that
- 12:21complete surrender to alcohol, to know that I cannot have a
- 12:26drink. I cannot take that.
- 12:28Like it's just, I understand truly from head to heart that
- 12:32I'm alcoholic and I can't drink. And eventually after a couple of
- 12:38years, I people started asking me to sponsor them.
- 12:43And that's where I started learning to connect and
- 12:47understand what a higher power is in my life.
- 12:51And my sponsor used to say to me, you help me more than I help
- 12:58you. And I was like, no, definitely
- 13:02not. Like I put her on a pedestal.
- 13:05She was my lifesaver. She was the one that got me
- 13:08sober. There's no way that I could be
- 13:10more helpful to her then she has just saved my life.
- 13:15That bit me in the butt a few years later that that kind of
- 13:20thinking. But I do truly understand that
- 13:24today and I know today I'm at my best when I'm not thinking about
- 13:28myself. I'm at my best when I'm helping
- 13:31others and I get completely out of myself.
- 13:35And that mentality of putting my sponsor on a pedestal really
- 13:42came undone. So I got a resentment towards
- 13:46her. As it happens, it does.
- 13:49I went to and I did talk about it with members.
- 13:52I went to a few women in my Home group at the time and I
- 13:56suggested that I go talk to her about it.
- 14:00And I was like, oh, you can't talk to her about a resentment
- 14:04that I have towards her. So I just ignored that and I
- 14:09ended up just writing her an e-mail just saying thank you,
- 14:13but I'm breaking up with you, basically.
- 14:17And it was around the time of COVID and it was just like this
- 14:22perfect storm of me taking my wheel back.
- 14:28And I thought I was doing OK, so that that we broke up.
- 14:33And then I deliberately picked a person that I knew that our kids
- 14:41didn't have to ring. There was no guidance and there
- 14:44was no structure because I thrive on structure.
- 14:46It is suggestions. Yes, it is.
- 14:48But I really thrive on routine and especially the stuff that
- 14:52they have in the big book. And and that was fine.
- 14:56And I never called her. And then COVID happened and the
- 14:59meeting stopped and I guess I didn't know this but I slowly
- 15:07went back into my disease again. I slowly went back into self and
- 15:10I all that old thinking started to come back.
- 15:13But I thought I was fine. My kids have also grown up in a
- 15:18A They were very little when I came in.
- 15:20I was a single mum and I dragged them everywhere to meetings like
- 15:27like they would be on a bus on a way home from a meeting at 9:30
- 15:33ten o'clock at night. I I did meetings every day and
- 15:36they were only little so they knew the benefits of me being in
- 15:40AA. So I just remember this one day
- 15:45and my daughter said to me, mummy, I think you need a
- 15:49meeting. And I was just shocked.
- 15:53Like I do believe God speaks through people.
- 15:55I believe God speaks through children more than anything
- 15:57because they are just so innocent.
- 15:59And I was just, I was like, OK. And then in the monsters, all of
- 16:06that, I got diagnosed with breast cancer and my, my world
- 16:14just fell apart. I just didn't know what to do.
- 16:17I didn't know how to cope. Yes, I had all these tools that
- 16:21I'd kind of learnt in the first few years, but I didn't have
- 16:26anyone guiding me. I didn't have a sponsor what I
- 16:29did, but not someone that I thought was, you know, going to
- 16:32guide me while I wasn't even using them.
- 16:34They might have been OK, but I just wasn't ringing them.
- 16:37So I remember being diagnosed with cancer and my whole world
- 16:40fell apart. And the fear, the fear that I
- 16:43felt and the things that went on in my head was I was already
- 16:47planning my funeral. I was already wanting to make
- 16:53videos at the funeral. I could be present, of course,
- 16:56because it's all about me. And I wanted to be in control of
- 16:59how I, how I, how that part of my life would be when I died
- 17:04and, and all of that stuff. And my husband also said to me,
- 17:10I actually like you better when you were being sponsored through
- 17:13Susan, who is my sponsor. And so all of these thing came
- 17:17up and sorry, I and I also just wanted to tell her before
- 17:22everyone else kind of found out. So I rang her and told her and I
- 17:26was going in to have a mastectomy.
- 17:28I was having my breasts removed and.
- 17:30And yeah, I'm just so grateful for that woman because we
- 17:35started for the next few weeks, I ended up just calling her
- 17:38everyday. And yeah, I asked her to sponsor
- 17:44him again. And I, and what I realized
- 17:47through that process is that I had put her on a pedestal.
- 17:53It gave me a better understanding that we are all
- 17:56equal here. And I, and I had that thinking
- 17:59of that mentality that there's a hierarchy and a low rocky or
- 18:04whatever it is. There's like a status in AI.
- 18:06And that's what I thought. And that experience helped me
- 18:11realize that I'm no better than I'm no less than.
- 18:14She's the same. She's just an alcoholic trying
- 18:17to, trying to stay sober and do life on life terms.
- 18:21And, and yes, so I asked her to sponsor me again.
- 18:25And yeah, I went through chemotherapy and through that
- 18:32process I, I guess I was not forced.
- 18:37I don't know the word to say or I guess it was another level of
- 18:40like how I see my higher power and what kind of relationship do
- 18:45I have with my higher powered? Is it conditional?
- 18:48And it absolutely was like if the conditions were attached to,
- 18:53to my life through, through that higher power and, and I, and I
- 18:59was, I'm a very controlling person, especially when it comes
- 19:03into my family and in the structural way my house runs.
- 19:07And God just had this and it was just a blessing, I guess,
- 19:13because I see blessings and all of the stuff these days of heavy
- 19:16stuff like that. God removed all that for me.
- 19:19Like just removed. I had a salon at the time and I
- 19:22was thinking about selling it and I didn't know how I was
- 19:26going to detach from that because you know, I've got all
- 19:29these clients and they're really important in my life.
- 19:31And, you know, I didn't know. And this journey through cancer
- 19:36had just really detached that. And yeah, I was really sick
- 19:41through chemo. And what really surprised me is
- 19:45that my household still ran. The kids still got to school.
- 19:51They still had lunch in their lunch boxes to go to school
- 19:55with. I still manage.
- 19:57I got to chemo. And I don't even know how it
- 20:00happened, but I had members taking me to chemotherapy.
- 20:04I had members picking me up, taking to meetings.
- 20:06And it was a real blur. But I think because I had so
- 20:11much practice in the beginning of my recovery, learning to ask
- 20:15for help, I think I just had that smart fee in regards to
- 20:19just knowing that next right thing to do when I had a really
- 20:21good foundation of my recovery. And so I do remember sitting in
- 20:30chemotherapy and I still struggle to sit with myself
- 20:33today. And I just got my little thing I
- 20:38had with my my drugs and stuff in it.
- 20:41And I just got around and I just started talking to people.
- 20:44And cancer is a really personal journey.
- 20:48Everyone deals with it differently and there were some
- 20:52people that just didn't want to talk about it, but I made some
- 20:55amazing friends through just being of service and asking how
- 21:00they're doing and how their journey was going.
- 21:02And like it was, it was really a beautiful process.
- 21:07And it's just through that connection like we get here in
- 21:10a, a, you know, one alcoholic talking to another.
- 21:13I was able to create that space when I was going through
- 21:16chemotherapy, you know, one cancer patient talking to
- 21:19another cancer patient. And I just love of how I can
- 21:22take this stuff into the outside world and, and, you know, just
- 21:28be of service in the community. And yeah, like really God really
- 21:35showing me there's, there's another way.
- 21:37Like, I'm like, God removed all that stuff that I thought was
- 21:41keeping me OK and showed me like, it's, you know, it's, it's
- 21:45going to be OK no matter what happens.
- 21:47And then life continued on and I'd done another round of the
- 21:51steps and in a group setting this particular time with my
- 21:56sponsor and my sobriety sisters. And that was just another level
- 22:00of it's like that onion with the liars just being peeling off and
- 22:06just saying things that I'd never seen before.
- 22:10And, and what came up in that inventory was these kind of like
- 22:16hidden resentments that I didn't know I had.
- 22:19So in particular with my stepdaughter, I only have this
- 22:22resentment. And I didn't think it was a big
- 22:24deal when she annoyed me or she did something that I didn't
- 22:29think was right and I'd reply it, reply, reply, it should
- 22:32leave or she'd go off and it would go away.
- 22:38I wouldn't think about it again until the next time, and I
- 22:41didn't. I honestly didn't think it was
- 22:43an issue. I just thought I was angry and I
- 22:46was mad in the moment and I was able to get rid of it.
- 22:49But what this particular inventory uncovered, especially
- 22:53when I was listening to everyone else's journeys of like that
- 22:58connection to what happens to me when I'm in resentment and the
- 23:01actions that I do, I never really made that connection
- 23:04before. And people and then especially
- 23:07her feeling my energy when I'm mad and I got really petty.
- 23:11Oh my God, it's so embarrassing that I would do things like, I
- 23:18shouldn't say I don't feel ashamed about it, but it is
- 23:20embarrassing because this is me maybe at about 6:00 or seven
- 23:24years sober, she would annoy me. So like in the mornings when I
- 23:28was cutting her fruit up in the lunch boxes, I would put the
- 23:31crappy looking fruit in her lunch box.
- 23:34She would annoy me so much I would go turn the heater up in
- 23:37her room for half an hour. But just little things like that
- 23:42to her, they probably, she probably didn't even notice and
- 23:44I didn't even realise I was doing it.
- 23:47And to, and to do it in a group setting like that and to uncover
- 23:52and discover all this stuff, I was just like, wow.
- 23:58And then it took me a while to become willing to make an amends
- 24:03to her with that stuff because I had to be mindful about causing
- 24:07harm on her. Do how much do I tell her?
- 24:10And all that stuff I was able to see through with my sponsor.
- 24:12But what I did uncover with that stuff is my energy when I'm
- 24:16around here, when I'm in that resentment.
- 24:19And I'm just very mindful of that.
- 24:21And, and through that immense process of verbally saying that
- 24:25to her and really making a conscious effort to change my
- 24:27behaviour around that stuff, we have such a beautiful close
- 24:30relationship today that would never have happened if I didn't
- 24:36do that stuff. Like, like I just because I've
- 24:38always remained open and willing.
- 24:42And when I do that, God is able to get in, especially if I
- 24:46continue to do all this stuff. How am I going for time?
- 24:51OK, beautiful. And then you Fast forward to
- 24:53only a couple of years ago and there was something that came up
- 24:58in my relationship with my marriage.
- 25:00That was another another lesson on how I connect with my higher
- 25:09power and I don't know how to explain.
- 25:12So like my, I was relying on my higher power through my husband
- 25:18so and I didn't know I was doing it.
- 25:21And then when something happened because he, he's in recovery as
- 25:25well. And when something happened that
- 25:29he did, which is his staff, it's got nothing to do with me.
- 25:33I blamed God and I didn't know that I was probably putting my
- 25:39emotional dependency and higher power through him.
- 25:42And that was a really heavy lesson to walk through.
- 25:47And yeah, I hate I, I blamed God for a long time.
- 25:51I didn't like God for a long time.
- 25:54I would, I would talk to my sponsor about it.
- 25:58And I'm can and I have had a lot of surrenders around that stuff.
- 26:03And, and it just made me realize how much of an emotional
- 26:07dependence I put on my family. And I think, and, and then just
- 26:12before I came here with the stuff that I'm riding out in the
- 26:15inventory before I came here, what what what I uncovered with
- 26:19that, and I will talk to my sponsor tomorrow morning about
- 26:22it, is that I'm just scared because my relationship with my
- 26:25kids are changing and I'm really scared that I'm losing them, not
- 26:31because they're teenagers now and they're not very nice to me.
- 26:36It is what it is that ultimately what I'm scared about is them
- 26:40growing up and you know, they're going to leave the nest and I'm
- 26:45scared. I'm really, really scared.
- 26:46And that's what I uncovered before I came here.
- 26:49Plus I did cause some harm on my daughter earlier today, which I
- 26:52will go make an amends. So I'm so, so grateful that I
- 26:57have found AA. He has not just saved my life,
- 27:02but what it has gifted me is perception changes and the tools
- 27:07to go out into the into the world and live life on life's
- 27:11terms because that's something that I couldn't do.
- 27:14And and really learn that God is either everything or God is
- 27:20nothing. And for me that I need to sit in
- 27:24that stuff on a regular basis. So I'll just leave it there.
