Latest / The Monégasque Table / Edible Glitter Label Checklist: Five Things to Look For
Transcript
- Margaux: No ingredients listed. Not one word. This past January, a reviewer flipped over a jar of sparkle — the kind you shake onto a birthday cake — and found the label named nothing at all. Dana: See, that's my whole problem with this aisle. I've stood there holding two jars — same shimmer, same price, same unicorn on the front. One says edible. One says basically nothing. And I'm supposed to just... vibe it out? Margaux: Welcome to The Monégasque Table. Today's question comes straight from that aisle: how can you tell if glitter is really edible? Not by trusting the sparkle — by reading the label. Five checks, about 30 seconds. Dana: I'll warn you up front. I shop with a four-year-old hanging off the cart. If your method needs a chemistry degree and reading glasses, it's dead on arrival. Margaux: Then here's the answer up front, cart and all. Five things. One — the label actually lists ingredients. Two — those ingredients are names you can look up. Three — it says edible, plainly, and names the food it goes on. Four — no dodge words: "non-toxic" and "for decoration only" are exit signs. Five — it reads like food packaging, with a serving amount and a date. A jar that passes all five is very hard to fake. Dana: Rule one sounds too obvious to be a rule. Who sells sparkle for cakes without saying what's in it? Margaux: More sellers than this category should admit — that's today's mess. Here's the number. When shoppers in this niche leave a negative review about ingredients, more than 66% of the time the complaint isn't about what's in the jar. It's that the label doesn't say what's in the jar. Missing information, not scary information. Dana: Hold on, I want to poke that before you build a whole episode on it. "66% of ingredient complaints." That could be an avalanche, or it could be 12 grumpy people with strong feelings. Size it for me. Margaux: Fair poke. It comes from an analysis of about 2,400 reviews across the category — and the share is of classified complaint mentions, not of all buyers. So no, most customers aren't writing angry ingredient reviews. Dana: Thank you. So it's a slice of a slice. Why should I care? Margaux: Because of what else sits in that same review pile. Nearly 1 in 10 negative mentions say the product turned out not to be edible at all. Bought in the food aisle. Not food. That January reviewer got the mild version. Dana: Okay, that lands. A blank label is annoying. Glitter-that-isn't-food is the actual problem. Margaux: And it isn't just cranky reviewers. The FDA's published guidance says it plainly: genuinely edible glitter and luster dust lists its ingredients. And when the FDA has investigated contamination cases involving decorated food, the trail has led back to dust that was never edible in the first place. Dana: So rule one isn't obvious. It's the whole ballgame. No list, no sale. Margaux: No list, no sale. You just wrote the fridge magnet. Dana: It's a gift. Rule two — names you can look up. What am I hoping to find? Margaux: Sparkle Lab moment. Can I? Dana: The lab is open. Margaux: A real edible-glitter label reads something like this: mica-based pearlescent pigments. Iron oxide. Sometimes titanium dioxide. And then colors written in a very particular style — FD&C Red No 40, FD&C Blue No 1. That naming comes straight out of the federal color-additive regulations — 21 CFR 73, if you want the receipt. Search any of those names next to the letters FDA and the actual rule comes up. On your phone. In the aisle. Dana: That's backwards from every instinct I have, though. In the rest of the grocery store, the long chemical names are the thing I'm avoiding. Margaux: In this one aisle, flip the instinct. Precise beats pretty. "Magic shimmer powder" tells you nothing you can check. FD&C Blue No 1 tells you the exact listed color additive and which federal rule covers it. Checkable beats comforting. Dana: Fine. Rule three. The word edible. Doesn't everything in the baking section say that? Margaux: Not everything — and how it's said matters. What you want is the plain claim: edible, food grade, made to be eaten, with the food named. Cakes. Drinks. Strawberries. The confident sellers do say it — in category data, listings that claim food grade outright pull noticeably more engagement. Dana: Which tells you something about the jars that won't say it. Margaux: It tells you a lot. And that's rule four — the dodge words. "Non-toxic" is a craft word. Crayons are non-toxic. It means it probably won't poison you, not that it was made to go in your mouth. "For decoration only" or "for display" is the quiet confession — a seller telling you, in small print, that this is not food. The sentence worth hunting for on a listing runs the other way: unlike craft glitter or non-toxic decorative dust made only for display, this is truly edible. Dana: Okay, but I'm going to defend the villain for a second. If a jar says "for decoration only" — that label is honest. It told you exactly what it is. You can't call that a trick. Margaux: The words are honest. The shelf does the lying. That jar sits next to the sprinkles, over the cake mix, wearing the same unicorn — and nobody reads the small print at 5 p.m. with a full cart. Dana: (laughs) With the four-year-old reaching for it. Yeah. Margaux: Which is why rule five is the vibe check. Real food packaging has furniture. A serving amount — drink glitter, for instance, gets used at about 0.1 grams a glass, and jars built for eating print that guidance. A date on the package. Storage lines. Display-only shimmer doesn't bother, because as far as its seller is concerned, nobody's eating it. Dana: Alright. Before the scorecard, I want my round. Your whole checklist assumes somebody's eating the thing. Half the sparkle projects in my house, nobody is. Display cookies for the school fair. A photoshoot cake that gets thrown out. Glitter slime, God help me. For all of that, craft glitter is cheaper, it's shinier, and it's fine. If this checklist guilt-trips people into paying food prices for a craft project, it did them a disservice. Margaux: That's the round you win — no contest. If nobody's eating it, you don't need edible and you shouldn't pay edible prices. So there's our who-should-skip-it, said plainly: display pieces, props, crafts where the glitter never touches a lip — buy the craft tube and save your money. This checklist is for the moment sparkle and food actually meet. One bite planned? Then it applies. Dana: And the other skip: if the jars already in your drawer pass all five, you're done. Boring answer. Real answer. Margaux: The drawer test is real. Run it tonight. Dana: Scorecard time. I came in saying you can't really tell — that this aisle blurs on purpose and normal people just have to hope. Where I've landed: you can tell, and faster than I feared. One: no ingredient list, no sale — that one glance catches most of the trouble. Two: look-up-able names — mica, iron oxide, the FD&C colors. Precise beats pretty. Three: edible said plainly, with the food named. Four: "non-toxic" and "decoration only" are exit signs, not comfort. Five: food furniture — a serving amount, a date. Caveats I'm keeping: the 66% is a share of complaint mentions, not a census of buyers. And if nobody's eating your project, skip the list and buy craft. Margaux: That's the checklist. For the record, it's also the standard our own jars answer to — named ingredients on every color, over 400,000 orders across the US, Canada, and the UK, and the gold jar sitting at 4.6 stars across 6,669 ratings. People check. If you want a set that passes all five in one box, the MONÉGASQUE 12-color luster dust gift set is on Amazon. Dana: And next time — a question straight from my kitchen table, because my daughter actually asked it: what makes edible glitter shiny? Like, physically. Why does a mineral powder catch light like that? Margaux: The physics of the sparkle. Bring her questions to the Lab. Quick note before we go — this show is produced by the team at Monégasque, with AI-crafted hosts, and every number you heard was checked by humans against the documents. See you at the table.
