Transcript
- 0:00Happy Friday morning, everybody. He said it right.
- 0:03All right, everyone, So as you can tell, it's coffee with Kyle
- 0:07and Kenny on this Friday morning.
- 0:10Where we at? We're in Traverse City, MI
- 0:13getting ready to ride motorcycle you've already ridden.
- 0:15Like how far have you ridden so far?
- 0:17Like 600 miles. He's already put in a whole
- 0:20charity ride. But it's awesome I I love the
- 0:22Kyle Petty charity ride and and met his wife Morgan and all the
- 0:25kids but so total people with 125 riders a. 125 bikes, about
- 0:31280 riders, 240 people, I think right along in there because,
- 0:36you know, you got the doctors and the nurses and the cops and
- 0:40are the state patrolman, the motor marshals and the luggage
- 0:42team and the hotel team and the PR team.
- 0:46Yeah. It it takes a lot of people
- 0:48because, because as brother Rusty said, better safe than
- 0:52salt. That's.
- 0:52Exactly right. Safety never takes a holiday,
- 0:54buddy. Remember that.
- 0:55Before we talk about JD Mcduffie, you said something to
- 1:00me on the very first ride. You said that you thought this
- 1:04was about motorcycles. Yeah, but it ended up being
- 1:07about people. It's about people, God.
- 1:10We meet. I think that's why my wife loves
- 1:12us so much. She loves people.
- 1:13Yeah, and it's great Kim is riding this year.
- 1:15I'm so excited to it's. All you.
- 1:17Listen, I'm so excited. She rode in here raining
- 1:20everywhere and she got off the bike with a huge smile on her
- 1:22face. But it is about the people, you
- 1:24know, it's George and DD from from Fort Lauderdale.
- 1:28You know, it's, it's just people that you meet that you've met
- 1:31and they become good friends, man.
- 1:32And no matter where you see them, you see them in a
- 1:33racetrack, you see them at the mall, you see them somewhere.
- 1:36They're from all over California, Texas, Louisiana,
- 1:40Connecticut. They're from all over the
- 1:41country. Right.
- 1:42OK, so before we talk about JD, one more thing.
- 1:46OK? And this is just me being a
- 1:48lover and showing respect. Where can we go to donate a
- 1:52little bit of money? Because camp is incredible.
- 1:55I've been there. It's the real deal.
- 1:57Where can they go? Yeah, you.
- 1:58Can go to victoryjunction.org or if you want to go through the
- 2:01through the ride, just go to kylepettycharityride.com.
- 2:04Follow us at child Kyle Petty charityride.com this year and
- 2:06you're going to see plenty of pictures of my man here signing
- 2:09all grass, talking to fans, making it happen for all the
- 2:12kids at camp. Well, I'm a little shy, but his
- 2:15wife, Morgan, she calls me and she goes, Harmon, you better get
- 2:18on social media. And I said I will.
- 2:21Yeah, he upped his game, man. We broke.
- 2:23We're promoting because it's such a wonderful cause.
- 2:26OK? Yesterday we were at Bailey
- 2:30Land. It's John and Julie Bailey and
- 2:34their children. And of course, if you watched
- 2:36Coffee with Kenny on Thursday, it was all about he sponsored JD
- 2:42Mcduffie it, said Bailey Excavating.
- 2:45Excavating. When you said land, it threw me
- 2:47off a minute 'cause it was a joke.
- 2:48It was. Bailey land, Bailey land, Bailey
- 2:50land. He's got his house, he's got his
- 2:52pond and it's just Bailey land. It's like a lot of fun.
- 2:56So anyway, I'm going to set you up and then I, I would like you
- 3:00taught me a lot about independence and, and your
- 3:03father, I guess you're. Richard.
- 3:06And maybe your grandpa Lee, but JD Mcduffie was an independent.
- 3:13And I just want you to explain to everybody what you saw,
- 3:16because the reason we're doing this coffee with Kenny is if it
- 3:21got way bigger than I thought. And everybody really likes
- 3:24independence. What is your version?
- 3:26So it's a petty of an independent.
- 3:28So an independent was independents came along.
- 3:31Really everybody was an independent in the beginning
- 3:34because nobody had a deal, nobody had sponsors, nobody.
- 3:37If you go back to the 50s, let's go back to the 50s.
- 3:40And if you did have a sponsor, you'd come in to Traverse City
- 3:43and race here and it would be the Grand Traverse Resort
- 3:45because they'd give you free rooms and that was your sponsor.
- 3:47Yeah, free rooms. Free rooms, man, that free meal.
- 3:50You put somebody at a restaurant.
- 3:51So everybody was an independent as the faction, as the
- 3:54manufacturers got into it in the late 50s and 60s, 60s, you had
- 3:58teams that were Chrysler teams, you had teams that were Ford
- 4:01teams and you had teams that were Chevy teams, Pontiac teams,
- 4:05Buick teams. All the manufacturers were in
- 4:07it. And then you had guys that just
- 4:09raced that didn't have a deal. So they were independents.
- 4:12They, they were the independents and they were not going to race
- 4:15against, They struggled to race and win races against the Bud
- 4:19Moors, against the, the Junior Johnsons, against the Petty
- 4:23Enterprises, The Wood Brothers of the 60s and only the said,
- 4:26the home and the Moodys. They were anything but an
- 4:29independent, you know, so, but during that time you had a group
- 4:32of drivers and a group of teams that came out that were, and,
- 4:36and kind of found their place in the sport, especially in the
- 4:39late 60s, early 70s. And you mentioned JD, you had JD
- 4:42Childress was an independent, Richard Childress.
- 4:44Richard Childress was an independent as he rolled into
- 4:46the 70s. He was an independent.
- 4:48Cecil Gordon, John Sears, JCGC Spencer.
- 4:54John Sears was that that. That's not that, Spears.
- 4:56No, no. Sears was from.
- 4:58He was from down around Elleby. He run the number 4 car and
- 5:01Cecil run the number 24. Jeff Gordon can claim the number
- 5:0424 car, but in my heart he's. Cecil Gordon is the 24 car guy
- 5:08named Raymond Williams from He was from Pinehurst, Captain
- 5:13America. He had his car painted up red,
- 5:15white and blue and. Wore a cap.
- 5:16I love it 'cause he was a kid at one time, that's what's burnt
- 5:19into his brain and. James Hilton was an independent.
- 5:22These guys were independents and what they did, they raced.
- 5:26And when they went to the race, yeah, they wouldn't win.
- 5:29They knew they weren't. Going to win, but they knew they
- 5:31weren't going to win. So if they could run in the top
- 5:34ten, right, Oh my gosh, it was the Daytona 500.
- 5:37If they could run in the top 15, it was an amazing day and they
- 5:41set their standards and they run.
- 5:44It was a business model for them and they understood their
- 5:46business model. The Petty Enterprise's business
- 5:48model was to win. The Wood Brothers business model
- 5:51was to win. Junior Johnson was to win.
- 5:53These guys, they made a living. They sent their kids to college.
- 5:58Independence, independence, Independence sent their kids to
- 6:00college. Because they wanted their kids
- 6:03to be better, to do something better, to learn, to have an
- 6:06education. They had incredible houses
- 6:09because they made good money. I mean, it was good money to
- 6:11race it. It wasn't going to be, you know,
- 6:14$100,000, a $150,000 because Richard Betty didn't win 100, a
- 6:18$100,000 in in in the late 60s, early 70s, even if you won all
- 6:22races you didn't win, there was not that much money.
- 6:24But you're making 40 or $50,000 a year, which is a huge, huge.
- 6:28Income so. And, and what what they would do
- 6:30is, you know, Buddy Arrington was an independent.
- 6:33Jimmy Means as he came along later would have been an
- 6:36independent and they would take take off tires.
- 6:39My dad would run, you know, 75 laps at, at at Dover, take the
- 6:44tires off and roll them down the buddy's pit and he would put
- 6:47them on. Hold on.
- 6:48When Kyle talks, this is normal to him.
- 6:51But for all of us, I want to emphasize this.
- 6:53So was it 500 miles of Dover? Yeah.
- 6:56OK, 500 miles of Dover. Cast iron heads, they're always
- 7:01going to crack catastrophic blow UPS.
- 7:04So your dad puts 5075 laps on a tire and you got factory
- 7:10sponsored because your grandpa Lee and your dad were really
- 7:13good and and they got the factory deal.
- 7:16So you you would put those laps on those tires and did your, did
- 7:20you and your team automatically know who did you guys have a
- 7:24deal with? So so there were there were
- 7:26everybody helped you helped different people.
- 7:28Listen, Childress would take children on the three car.
- 7:31He would take anything that junior had that the 11 car.
- 7:33OK, So he and Junior were together, he and Junior.
- 7:35It was children, junior. Chevrolet So we we had we helped
- 7:39Jimmy Means, we helped Buddy Arrington.
- 7:42Jade Thomas was another great independent from the late 60s,
- 7:47the Clown Prince of Motorsports. That's a whole episode I'm.
- 7:49Talking. I think I've heard a little bit
- 7:50about this. You and I fall.
- 7:54Right in the Jay Thomas. Well, we got a little John
- 7:56Force. That's it.
- 7:57You're a winner. You're a winner.
- 7:58So you had you had those guys. So you had three or four teams
- 8:02and, and, but more and The Wood Brothers had three or four
- 8:04teams. Elmo Langley, who came along, he
- 8:07was a, he was a major independent, major independent.
- 8:10So you look at those guys and they made it work.
- 8:13They made race and work because without those guys, and, and I
- 8:16know this is going to sound straight crazy and, and, and I
- 8:19hope it doesn't sound arrogant, but Richard Petty and David
- 8:23Pearson and Kel Yarborough and all those guys, they're not who
- 8:26they are without that group of independents because they've got
- 8:30to have somebody to pass. They got to have somebody to
- 8:32race. They got to make it look like a
- 8:33race. It's got to be something out
- 8:35there. You needed independents.
- 8:36You need them to make the world full of this.
- 8:38To make the show. We would go to Dover sometimes
- 8:40and 40 car feel at the time and, and you go to Dover and they'd
- 8:45only be 36 cars and Bill, Bill Senior or Bill Junior would call
- 8:50up James or call up some of these guys and say, listen, I'll
- 8:53buy you a couple of sets of tires and we'll pay your hotel
- 8:55bill if you'll come up here. Boom, they're up there in the
- 8:57next game. They qualify just to fill the
- 8:59field. But they held NASCAR, helped
- 9:02these independents because that was part of the NASCAR show and
- 9:05that's part of what made things work.
- 9:06So there's some particular things that I want you to tell.
- 9:10OK? Yesterday I told the story that
- 9:12you told me and I think it was a very respectful story because it
- 9:16makes, you know, like those, you know, buddy Eric makes him look
- 9:20good or, or, or JD, you told me that somebody at Petty
- 9:25Enterprises said, take these leaf springs over.
- 9:28Can you remember that story? Yeah, we took, So we take took
- 9:30leaf springs up to Buddy Orintons because we run leaf
- 9:33springs and torsion bars because that's what a Chrysler was, if
- 9:35Chrysler was not Kohl's. Respond right here.
- 9:38Kyle's telling you chassis setups.
- 9:40Leaf springs and torsion bars and you would run them for a
- 9:43while and then you just get new ones.
- 9:44And when you got the new ones, you'd take what you had up to up
- 9:47to buddies and they were new to Buddy.
- 9:49You know, they were better than buddies.
- 9:50And he would have. He had an.
- 9:53You're a kid. You pull up and you're like, oh,
- 9:56this guy's an independent, he's going to live in a something
- 9:59cheap. Yeah, he's going to be in a
- 10:01mobile home and he's going to be in A1 stall shop and you go up
- 10:05there and he and Joey are working in an incredible place,
- 10:07man. And Grow got one of the nicest
- 10:09houses I've ever seen. And I go home and I'm tell my
- 10:12dad I'm like Oh my gosh dude what about this?
- 10:15Why are we giving our stuff to buddy?
- 10:18Have you seen their place? And he's like, and James Hilton
- 10:20was the same way his place was the same way.
- 10:22He had he had a shop with all new equipment and all stuff.
- 10:25And, and my dad said, yeah, here's what we do, 90 cent of
- 10:28every dollar we put back in a race car.
- 10:31OK, 50 Cent of every dollar they put back in a race car because
- 10:35they know even if they put 100% of every dollar, they don't have
- 10:39the factory backing, they don't have that factory support.
- 10:42So that you're just not going to buy your way over the mountain.
- 10:45And we're in that in the sport right now.
- 10:47If you're some of these teams and you're not going to buy your
- 10:50way over the Hendrick Mountain, you're not going to buy your way
- 10:52over the Gibbs Mountain. Buy your way.
- 10:54You're just not going to buy your way, man.
- 10:56So you've got to know your lane, you've got to understand your
- 10:59lane, and you got to maximize it.
- 11:00And these guys knew it long before anybody else, long before
- 11:04anybody else. So this is coffee with Kenny
- 11:06Connell and you and I have already done a a Kenny
- 11:09conversation. Go to go to YouTube, push in
- 11:12Kenny Wallace, Cal Petty. We have over an hour
- 11:15conversation with Cal. We love the sport.
- 11:18We can talk forever, but we do got to wrap it up right now.
- 11:22I just wanted to say that, you know, if you go to a casino, you
- 11:26want to win the world. So the more money you gamble, if
- 11:29you lose, you're broke. That's right.
- 11:31And you're telling me that these independents, they knew how much
- 11:34to gamble? They knew how much they could
- 11:35gamble, and they knew what it took to make a living and what
- 11:40it took to provide for their friends.
- 11:41What was Dave Marcus and all that he?
- 11:42He was, he was an independent, but Dave crossed the line.
- 11:45This is the funny part about that.
- 11:47Dave is that one magical guy who came South, and this fascinates
- 11:52me, was a huge Richard Petty fan named his son Richard.
- 11:55Did you know that Dave Marcus, Dave Marcus named his son
- 11:57Richard because he was a huge Richard Petty fan.
- 12:00He comes South and he comes as an independent and and then he
- 12:04gets a ride with in the 71 car, which was a basic guy, Bobby and
- 12:10it was the Harry Hyde car. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:12The KNK insurance. Oh man.
- 12:13Drove the 71 car, drove for Jim Stacy, drove for Rodger Penske,
- 12:17drove that freaking Matador Javelin, whatever for Penske
- 12:21before, really before Donahue and those guys drove it.
- 12:24He was one of the guys drove there, had opportunities to step
- 12:28across that line and work for teams, but always went back and
- 12:33drove a car, drove his own car. He won a race at Richmond, early
- 12:3780s, eighty 182 in a little blue Malibu.
- 12:41I will never forget this. And he kicked their butt that
- 12:43day. Man, he can.
- 12:44And that was such a huge upset. And, you know, everybody goes
- 12:48back and and I say this, and this comes from being an old
- 12:51school. Everybody goes back when I think
- 12:54Tony won a race and it was like the first owner driver to win a
- 12:57race and all that stuff. And I'm like, yeah, Marcus is
- 13:00like the guy. He's the guy.
- 13:02Marcus is the owner driver that wins races, you know, the guy
- 13:04who who had nothing, who put it all together, who threw it out
- 13:08there on the line on a Sunday at Richmond and kicked all the big
- 13:12boys butts. And when it was all over with,
- 13:14you know, Marcus still went back and jumped in his truck and
- 13:17drove it home himself. And snatched that motor out on
- 13:20Monday morning all by himself and did it all by himself.
- 13:23And Tony didn't do that. Yeah, right now I appreciate
- 13:25Tony. Yeah, that's not what I'm
- 13:26saying. And it's not a slam against
- 13:27Tony. No, it's just a different view
- 13:30of what an owner driver was. And Marcus was was the greatest
- 13:34as far as I'm. Concerned.
- 13:35Really good stuff. I hope you all enjoyed it and
- 13:38this independent story is a follow up to yesterday because
- 13:41we've got so many. Somebody in the lobby said.
- 13:44Man, I love that story. So I want to say this massive
- 13:48respect to Kyle. I always tell Kyle, I say, Kyle,
- 13:53I'm afraid of Richard. You said to me, so we were you.
- 13:58I said. I said, Kyle, I'm afraid.
- 14:00I'm afraid of your dad, Richard. He's so famous that Kyle said
- 14:02I'm afraid of him too. But all my respect to Kyle Petty
- 14:06and the Petty Enterprises. If you had told me years ago I'd
- 14:09be sitting next to Kyle Petty, I said, ain't no way.
- 14:11He's too famous. But.
- 14:13If you'd told me last month I was going to be sitting next to
- 14:15Kitty Wallace, I'd say no way. He's too famous.
- 14:17I can't sit next to him. Stop it.
- 14:18But but I really feel like I I'm a little controversial at times,
- 14:23but I'm going to say it like this.
- 14:24Kyle is number one at great memory in history.
- 14:28I think. I think Dale Earnhardt Junior is
- 14:31number 2. That's just respond right here.
- 14:34But you're #1 because you were born before Dale Junior and Dale
- 14:38Junior sees what you're doing. But you 2, you 2 would be
- 14:42incredible to see you guys get together one day about cars
- 14:46because junior studies. Do you watch YouTube videos?
- 14:49Yes, I watch. It and here's and here's This is
- 14:51the funny part. And listen Junior's knowledge.
- 14:53Is we're trying to stop but. I'm going to say Junior's
- 14:57knowledge is phenomenal because he's gone back and researched
- 15:01and. He's a researcher.
- 15:02Yeah, and and here's the problem is I'm not.
- 15:05Yeah, and right here I'm not. I just live this.
- 15:09I lived seeing Cecil Gordon at the race track and seeing JD
- 15:12Mcduffie at the race track and watching him race and was there
- 15:15when JD was killed was just part of it, you know?
- 15:17I mean, so it's just just those are memories that are personal
- 15:21memories, not book memories, not TV memories, not YouTube
- 15:24memories. Those are memories that are
- 15:25personal memories. So I may see it a little bit
- 15:27different. You say you're controversial.
- 15:28I may see it a little. Bit different.
- 15:30He's more controversial than me. I may.
- 15:32See it a little bit different? You don't want me but.
- 15:35It's fascinating because the sport tries to rewrite its
- 15:37history sometimes and make everybody think everything was
- 15:40sunshine and roses and at what it was.
- 15:43It was tough sometimes. You already said some things
- 15:45that make me go. Oh my God, you know, we're doing
- 15:48the same thing right now. OK, Everybody follow along.
- 15:52Kyle Petty charity ride on all social medias and all our stops
- 15:57are there. Say goodbye, Kyle.
- 15:59See you later.
