- 0:00Welcome back everyone to the Kenny Wallace show brought to
- 0:03you by Jegs and as always the leader in high performance
- 0:08aftermarket car parts. Remember to go to jegs.com.
- 0:14Well, we get lucky every time we do the Kenny conversation and
- 0:19boy, we really lucky this time. Joey Logano to time to time
- 0:25Nascar Cup champion at 32 years old, that's incredible.
- 0:31Joey, welcome to the Kenny conversation, bad.
- 0:35Glad to be here. Kenny, I'm a little nervous
- 0:37about where this is going to go, but have a look cited as well.
- 0:40So let's have some fun. Yeah, and I appreciate that.
- 0:43I, you know, The Joey, I always tell everybody that up.
- 0:48It's healthy to have two or three of you inside you so
- 0:51there's definitely two or three of me.
- 0:53I think the I think the fun one that makes you a little nervous
- 0:56about me is the one. Maybe you see on TV people want
- 1:00to be entertained Joey, you reread her grave it it's not
- 1:04even what I see on TV. It's the social media account
- 1:07that I absolutely love is just straight out there.
- 1:11Filter is not existed for Kenny Wallace.
- 1:13I love it. I think everybody loves that.
- 1:16It's good. Yeah, well, I think if I was
- 1:18driving in the Cup Series, right now, like, you are, and I had a
- 1:22big sponsor like you do right now.
- 1:24I don't think you'd see that side of me, you know, 2015 was
- 1:28my last Xfinity race up in Iowa with with Joe Gibbs.
- 1:33You know, and I had a big sponsor and I was still a little
- 1:37little crazy, but I think you're going to see the real side of me
- 1:41today and let's start out like that.
- 1:43Kenny conversation that you feel free to stop me anytime you
- 1:47want. Because we can throw audibles
- 1:49and go any way you would like, you know, it just seems like
- 1:55yesterday. You will, you know, little Joey
- 1:59sliced bread and now all of a sudden I see on social media, I
- 2:04see you married, you're teaching your kids to ride, go-karts.
- 2:10The tell me about that period right there where you were
- 2:12running. And now, all of a sudden you're
- 2:14married and you have a wonderful family Everyday, Life Changes,
- 2:20right? It's kind of crazy.
- 2:21I mean, everyone's, I'm you've been through it but it's, it's
- 2:26cool too. 41 grow up in the sport, right?
- 2:29And everybody kind of sees your growth pattern and how you've
- 2:35matured throughout your years, right?
- 2:36And it for you, it might be a little different actually
- 2:40because when you're 18, there was a social media and YouTube
- 2:44where all the stuff lives forever.
- 2:45Now, my mistakes that I made when I was 18, they they live
- 2:48forever on social media and on YouTube.
- 2:51So it's changed a little bit for me.
- 2:54But yeah, I think when you Think of, you know, I started when I
- 2:58was 18 and XFinity series and 19 and cup.
- 3:01And and you know you you're not only growing as a person.
- 3:06You're also growing as a race car driver in front of all these
- 3:09people. And that was always kind of
- 3:12challenging and interesting and fun but you know as you get
- 3:16older you start to figure out who you are not only as a
- 3:19person, but also as a driver and you can kind of your in the
- 3:22growing in multiple ways, right? You start growing as a driver
- 3:26and You know, I got married to Brittany and now three crazy.
- 3:30Kids. Run around the house.
- 3:32We have girls there because it's harder.
- 3:34What you are the youngest person
- 3:51we've had on Kenny conversation. So you throw me.
- 3:54On a different Road. You throw me on a different
- 3:57pattern. You are the first person.
- 4:00That had to grow up in front of the social media.
- 4:03Are there things that you wanted to say you wanted to do.
- 4:08But you can't do because of social media.
- 4:11Has it changed you? No, no, everybody's got a camera
- 4:20these days, right? So there is, yeah, we talked
- 4:23about that. You got to be careful with what
- 4:25you say, and what you do, but I don't feel like I have to change
- 4:28who I am because of it like this is because this is just kind of
- 4:31who I am. I don't, I don't think I'm edgy
- 4:36in some ways and there's some jokes out there but I'm not
- 4:39like, I'm not saying things, I shouldn't say.
- 4:42I feel like my Morals are in the correct direction to where I
- 4:46don't have to worry about slipping up on something on
- 4:49social media and those type of things.
- 4:51The things that I worry about more than ever.
- 4:53It's just like when when I was not, not that I'm smart now, but
- 4:58when I was dumber than I am, you want it, you're very wise smart,
- 5:04but I said things on TV when I was young maybe something about
- 5:08Kevin Harvick's wife were in a fire suit but that was awesome.
- 5:11Yeah, it was awesome but now like my Kids will see that and
- 5:14go Dad, what was that? That's awesome.
- 5:17Why are you fighting people? On Pit Road.
- 5:22I'm ready for those conversations to pop up one day
- 5:24and be like. Yeah, my not handled that one
- 5:28perfectly correct, you know, but it's a it's funny know some of
- 5:32them were needed to happen, so it's okay.
- 5:35But those conversations will happen that most parents don't
- 5:40have to deal with that type of thing.
- 5:43Talking about parents. you know, I mean we're just starting Kenny
- 5:47conversation but Does your children show interest in
- 5:52racing? Do you want them to race?
- 5:55How's that conversation going with Brittany right now?
- 6:01I don't and you could probably help me with this.
- 6:03So my oldest Hudson, he's a top with it.
- 6:07Loves racing loves any mustard Drive, something every day.
- 6:11I come home. Let's go drive this.
- 6:12Let's go drive this. Okay, let's go, like, I'm fine
- 6:16with it because I enjoy it. I have fun with it too and he's
- 6:18a mini me. Like he is, identical.
- 6:21I know what he's thinking the all the whole awesome.
- 6:25So he's, he's our oldest. He's only five and I don't want
- 6:29to push him to go. Think I guess the other people
- 6:32really pushing their kids and like, really making it like a
- 6:35job for them right off the bat. And I see that at these like
- 6:39little local go-kart tracks that we go to, and I don't like that.
- 6:43I just think there's plenty of time to be a professional
- 6:48driver, and then it's going to be job.
- 6:51And I remember when I was a kid, my most favorite, most cherished
- 6:56memories of racing is when I was a kid because I showed up with
- 7:01my dad, he didn't know what he was doing.
- 7:02I didn't know what I was doing, we can trace, I hadn't come from
- 7:06a racing family and we just went and had fun.
- 7:09Like that's that's all it was about.
- 7:11And yeah, we won and we didn't know why but we're having a good
- 7:15time and like I just remember those memories being just so
- 7:20special and now when I go to kids races I just see This
- 7:27intensity level that is just so high and it's like that in all
- 7:30sports. Now, it's just kind of how
- 7:31things go, but I just want to make sure it's fun.
- 7:35And so, he's only five, I don't even start racing, so I was
- 7:38seven. So we really enjoy the backyard
- 7:42right now, it just tear that up, right?
- 7:44Just get a yard, we have a yard cart.
- 7:45He does that. We do have a little Outlaw cards
- 7:48have seen this out, like car seat.
- 7:49The kids race up at Mill Bridge. Yeah, that's fun.
- 7:53We went up. There it is.
- 7:56To the point, like we showed up back of my F-150 like that's it,
- 8:00I had a tool bag. Someone had to help me unload
- 8:02the thing because I can't pick the thing up by myself, and it's
- 8:05just me and him like let's just let's just go out there and have
- 8:07some fun. And I don't want it to be more
- 8:09than that for quite some time because I don't want to wear
- 8:13them out for what I want to make sure it's fun and I want them to
- 8:15have the same memories that I had, right?
- 8:18And he's competitive enough that he wants to win and he's pushing
- 8:21hard out there and I see that I want to see him try hard.
- 8:24I want him to work on the car. I don't want I pay somebody to
- 8:27take care of the car for us, like I want us to be able to do
- 8:29that that stuff because I think the Lessons Learned in that is
- 8:34means more than the racing. The chances of making it and
- 8:38ask, how are you now? It is that very high partner,
- 8:42very rare to make it. But the lessons that you learn
- 8:45in kids sports will I think Change your trajectory of life,
- 8:51more than anything. And teach you the things you
- 8:53need to know and teach you how to win and how to lose more
- 8:56importantly. And I want him to have all that
- 9:00for sure. And teach him hard work and
- 9:02preparation and those type of things.
- 9:05Yeah, you, you are wise, beyond your years because this is what
- 9:10I really wanted to dive into at the start of Kenny conversation
- 9:14because your dad is the legendary weather.
- 9:19You know, it or not, because he loves you so much.
- 9:22And so does your mother, your sister who was a great ice
- 9:26skater. We all watched you, you know, it
- 9:30was like you being prepared to be this.
- 9:34Great racer that you are right now.
- 9:36So, did you, we're on the same subject here?
- 9:41Did you grow up with this natural talent that you have?
- 9:44I mean, your car control is off the charts.
- 9:47It was when you were a child. So, did your dad, teach you
- 9:52this? Where did this great car
- 9:54control? You know, early in your life?
- 9:58Come from, I think just like another Sports.
- 10:03There's a certain level of god-given talent.
- 10:06So happy you said that and they're not given Talent.
- 10:10Yes, yeah, absolutely. And and everybody has some kind
- 10:14of talent. It's just if you're fortunate
- 10:18enough to discover it, right? That's the thing is going to be
- 10:22in driving a race car. It might be in math.
- 10:24It might be in go waterskiing you went racing, right?
- 10:28Right. I tried that.
- 10:29Don't have Now, I say that, and when you
- 10:43get to the cup level, everybody has God given talents and
- 10:48there's some out there that have more than me.
- 10:51No doubt that are just better and that's when that's when work
- 10:56ethic and preparation and you know, just being a student of
- 11:01the sport, trying to find an advantage comes into play where
- 11:05I like I said, I think I'm pretty good naturally, but
- 11:09you're the best. Yeah, sure.
- 11:11Only two-time, NASCAR champion, your incredible, appreciate
- 11:14that, but I'm not naturally good enough to go out there and win
- 11:17to carry. Say you study.
- 11:19I have to I have to I feel like I have to work harder than other
- 11:22drivers to be good, just to be competitive, right?
- 11:26I leave a picture behind me. This one here.
- 11:29When, when we go, I drove the 20 car, right?
- 11:33If I had enough god-given talent, I wouldn't have got
- 11:36fired from that job, okay? Right.
- 11:40You I was wrong to the world. You were not ready.
- 11:43Great. I wasn't ready because I wasn't
- 11:45good enough, right? Like if I was that special, I
- 11:47would have just figured Mining and circumstances.
- 11:50Yeah. So overall, it all worked out
- 11:53really well, and I learned a lot of lessons throughout all that,
- 11:55but that's when I realized, I gotta go to work to, like, get
- 11:59better. I got to really practice them
- 12:01work at my craft and the, the little details that make a
- 12:05really good race car driver. So there's always audibles.
- 12:10I always remind everybody that this conversation is not
- 12:13perfectly organized. Do, do you leave that picture
- 12:17behind you up there on purpose? I mean that was your first cup
- 12:22win. We all remember it.
- 12:26You've won so much with Roger Penske.
- 12:29Is that why is that picture up there?
- 12:31Well, I have I have other ones over here too.
- 12:34That's it. Okay, there we go.
- 12:36There we go. So, that was actually a Pocono,
- 12:43it wasn't New Hampshire and because I kind of came in kind
- 12:50of a weird thing, but that weekend there was one of the
- 12:56most stressful and most most emotional weekends, I guess.
- 13:01I could say, I've been through because that whole week going
- 13:05into it is where it became, pretty public, that Matt Kenseth
- 13:08was, Get over to 20 car. I had a lot of questions about
- 13:12it. We happen to show up, put the
- 13:15thing on the pole and race Mark Martin for the win and that was
- 13:19my second win in the first time in 13 years and I was looking
- 13:26for a job right. At that moment I was like that
- 13:29was when I was thinking, will I be a racecar driver anymore?
- 13:33What am I going to do? Because all my eggs are in one
- 13:36basket, it was to be a race car driver.
- 13:38Since I I was a little kid and and that was the moments of my
- 13:42life where I was like, oh I don't have a failed play on here
- 13:46like and it's about time travel story.
- 13:49And so that was just so and I so that that that race, there is
- 13:53not a more important race in my career than that one right
- 13:56there. And it's probably not known to
- 14:00everyone. I would probably think
- 14:01Championship weekends or getting into the championship for those
- 14:05type of things are larger, but those don't happen without that,
- 14:08weren't there. So that's, that's why I keep it
- 14:11up there because it was a tough one that what that was added to
- 14:15me shows, just the growth pattern that I needed to go
- 14:19through the, the failures that I needed to go through the grow
- 14:23and the mistakes of me to made to grow and it all kind of came
- 14:26to that moment right there. That really changed my life.
- 14:30They gave me an opportunity at Penske This is something that
- 14:34children teenagers need to hear because Joey Logano is an
- 14:41incredible Nascar Cup driver. He's looked up upon and this
- 14:45that picture this was a turning point in your career.
- 14:48So you're thinking your you set quick time you won the race
- 14:54Right there at Pocono. And yet during this whole time
- 14:57you're like I'm fired. I don't have a job and in your
- 15:02mind you have to rule all that out.
- 15:05So The question Bears, did you get this mental toughness from
- 15:11your mother your father grandma grandpa because I feel like
- 15:15there's another conversation here in a little bit about that.
- 15:18Where how are you able to focus on that?
- 15:22We can knowing that the guy coming for your seat, you know,
- 15:26you're racing him. You're upset, you're hurt.
- 15:30Yeah, and it's Your mom and dad hide from it, right?
- 15:36Probably my dad. My dad asked my, dad's a tough
- 15:39dude. Yes.
- 15:42And I think you just gotta, you gotta try to compartmentalize
- 15:48things in your life and you can't hide from it.
- 15:53It was happening, right? Like I couldn't run from it,
- 15:56couldn't hide from it, people are talking about it, it's
- 15:58coming up in every conversation, we just keeps happening.
- 16:02Happening. It was happening, right?
- 16:04Like it's all true. Okay.
- 16:06Like it. Yeah.
- 16:08And so you can't hide it from it but then you also got to focus
- 16:11in and do the job and you don't want to try too hard to where
- 16:15you wreck, right? Like you over try.
- 16:17And, you know, everyone's been part of that.
- 16:19Where you try too hard and then you end up putting too much
- 16:22pressure on yourself and you failed miserably, right?
- 16:24Like your maturity is showing up right now.
- 16:27Most kids that age. Thank God.
- 16:29Yeah and sometimes you just gotta get in just go do.
- 16:32Do what, you know, how to do and the timing of it was good.
- 16:35Obviously had a good car that weekend.
- 16:36Everything kind of worked out perfectly, but yeah, it was it
- 16:41was the hardest moments of my life.
- 16:43Those three years there where I thought, I drank the Kool-Aid
- 16:49man. Like I thought I was the man
- 16:52growing up. I was the youngest and
- 16:54everything. I was winning everything and I
- 16:57was like, yeah, I am really really good.
- 16:59You know it and I want was New York.
- 17:01Yo, and you're 15, 16 and Mark Martin's, say, near to the next
- 17:06thing to make it and you're going sliced bread.
- 17:08And there was commercials before I made my first Xfinity start
- 17:12just of me growing up at about like the, the moment I'm going
- 17:17to start my first race and how big is going to be.
- 17:20And, and then I won my first ride, my third Xfinity race in
- 17:24Kentucky. Yeah, I am good.
- 17:27Thank, I believe it. You know, and then I got that a
- 17:30cup level and, and It was just like getting beat into the
- 17:33ground. They're all really good.
- 17:37And I never lost before. I could even know how to lose
- 17:40it, even know what it's about. And I was like this awful and so
- 17:44getting through that like trench of learning how to lose
- 17:48learning, how to get better, really, having to work on my
- 17:50craft, as I never had to do that before, I didn't have to work on
- 17:53my craft before, I was just good and then everybody else was good
- 17:57and I'm like, oh I suck. I got a lot of work to do and so
- 18:00it's kind of accepting that and working at it and income
- 18:02eventually covered in that moment there.
- 18:05And this is the way they can. T conversation goes.
- 18:07I'm finally going to get to my very first question and what I
- 18:11mean, here we are, here we are 20 minutes into Kinney
- 18:14conversation, that's kind of where I wanted to start.
- 18:17So, in my mind, I remember everything about you and you're
- 18:22right. It was Mark the kid Martin out
- 18:25of Batesville Arkansas who was in your shoes.
- 18:30I'm a lot older than you, but, you know, Mark was a natural
- 18:33talent to his. dad Julian Martin is like, oh my God, you know,
- 18:37Mark Mark, Martin wins everything at 12 and 13 years
- 18:41old, driving full-blown, big cars and it was Mark that told
- 18:46us all Mark, Martin shouted, it from the rooftops there's this
- 18:52kid coming is name is Joey Logano.
- 18:57Tell me about that time when Mark put you on the national
- 19:00radar and we all said, who is he wears yet?
- 19:04Tell us about that. Yeah, that was.
- 19:07So, is there a delay and over? And this is when Mark was
- 19:10retiring the first time. It was like, yeah.
- 19:26Could that same weekend? I was racing in Mansfield Ohio
- 19:31and a pro Cup car. I won the race and it's so is
- 19:35the perfect timing of he made the comment.
- 19:39I won the race is like boom, boom.
- 19:41And then Kenny, you wouldn't believe it.
- 19:43It was, I was getting phone calls to come drive a race car
- 19:48for chip ganassi for Joe Gibbs and Rauch.
- 19:53I have 33 written contracts. Honor on my desk and it was me
- 19:59and my dad reading through them saying, what do we want to do?
- 20:01This was not what you see today, where people have to come to the
- 20:05table with money to drive a race car.
- 20:08Yeah, that talented. I was getting paid at 15 years
- 20:12old, drive a race car that's nuts in today's world.
- 20:16And and so to think of I had these terms, these deals that
- 20:20were, we're going to have three years before I can go racing.
- 20:24They were going to pay for all my racing.
- 20:25I was in get paid while I was 15 years old to go racing.
- 20:28Then I'm going to drive an Xfinity car and go right into
- 20:31cut the next, the next year. And this is where I'm going to
- 20:33pay for the next seven years. This is what it.
- 20:35This is what it is. And I have three Deals that were
- 20:38all the same, just like that. Do you think Mark Market, Mark
- 20:41Martin's voice? Help, that was my heart, 100%
- 20:47100%. You couldn't, you couldn't say
- 20:49it any other way because people respected Mark Martin that much.
- 20:53I respect his opinion. What he what?
- 20:56He Stood for on the racetrack, how we raise people respect that
- 20:59guy and so when you said my name it was like this guy must be
- 21:02must know. And so that was like the big
- 21:05turning point for me. And like I said that that's nuts
- 21:10to think that that could even happen, you know.
- 21:14And so for me, the timing was perfect, that's when there was
- 21:18driver development, programs going on where it was very
- 21:22important to develop the next the next driver and everybody
- 21:24did that. And so, We're looking and and
- 21:29it's great opportunity. Joe Gibbs.
- 21:31I signed with them. They bought all our Pro cup
- 21:34stuff, so they bought our trailer for a card.
- 21:37Everything we moved into the Xfinity shop.
- 21:40I've been that was a weird moment.
- 21:41As we go, roll it in with her, you know, we had, it was
- 21:43Renegade haulers. All right, if we come in like
- 21:45all right, where do where do we put our stuff?
- 21:49The Beverly Hillbillies are coming to town.
- 22:14This is Greg, nobody never knew this.
- 22:17Hmm. So it's a pretty incredible
- 22:20thing when you think about it, you know?
- 22:22And that I only I only had to race with racing and how it is,
- 22:33right? You gotta have somebody funding
- 22:34it, obviously, so she's good, right?
- 22:36You're not getting sponsors that are doing this stuff, but I only
- 22:39had to do that to us, 15, right? I only had the race on my dad's
- 22:41dime, basically, until I was 15, which is just incredible today.
- 22:48So pretty, pretty special. So I got to stay on this point
- 22:53just for a little bit longer. I go over to try.
- 22:56I City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois, very close to the
- 23:00worldwide technology Raceway. Where you were the inaugural
- 23:03winner? I go over there and they got
- 23:05this kind of like this new. You Shack quarter midget deal.
- 23:09But it's called, NASCAR youth series.
- 23:12Yep. And I go over and I see Danielle
- 23:13fry Jo J fries wife, who runs the IndyCar League.
- 23:19I go over there and Joey, there's 287 cars, there's motor
- 23:24homes everywhere and they said to me, hey, this Is were Carson
- 23:28host of our really showed up with his talent.
- 23:31So with that, from listening to your story and knowing that is
- 23:36work on cars and started, he showed up really good in the Cup
- 23:39race. Do you think it's much harder to
- 23:44get in the cup series nowadays? Because obviously you got in
- 23:48with Talent nowadays, you almost gotta fund yourself to get into
- 23:54big cars, and you almost got a fund yourself to get into the
- 23:58Xfinity series. Do you consider your timing and
- 24:02circumstances? Perfect, lucky, perfect.
- 24:09Let me be more better. It was if I started sooner,
- 24:12right? I guess.
- 24:23It's a broken system. I hate to say it but it is so
- 24:28challenging to make it because you got to have got to have
- 24:31cash. Not now this not everybody
- 24:35right? Unless you got to be a standout,
- 24:38you got only 99.9% of the people got to have money, you better be
- 24:43ridiculously good today to get the opportunity that I had.
- 24:47And I mean, even even today, Kenny, I can't go drive a truck.
- 24:52Without bringing money to the table, right?
- 24:54Well, that's big. What that truck at Bristol.
- 24:57This year. I had to bring a significant
- 25:00amount of money to go drive it. You would think you went a
- 25:04couple Cup championships that you can go drive, whatever you
- 25:07want. Whenever you do, you write it
- 25:10was like, well, they would want me in the cars.
- 25:11I can help them build their program.
- 25:13I have experience. I can you know, help us.
- 25:15Nope, nope. I got to bring money to go.
- 25:19Re still So it's an unbelievable.
- 25:22I mean it to me this is breaking news in the garage area though.
- 25:25This is this is true. He has even said though our
- 25:28champion has to bring money to go racing.
- 25:31What is a 18 year old kid 19? 20 year old kid that does not
- 25:35have a resume expect? Unbelievable.
- 25:39I don't know how you do it. I don't know how you do it like
- 25:42to the point that like my kids are irritates me.
- 25:46It's up how it upsets me too and I don't know the fix either,
- 25:50it's too freaking expensive and I think there's a I think if you
- 25:54look at the lower levels are doing a great job at finding
- 25:57more efficient ways to go racing.
- 25:59If you look at quarter midgets, you brought that up.
- 26:01That's decent, Legends cars, late models summer summer way
- 26:06too expensive but there's some local I said you're doing it in
- 26:09a more efficient way. Dirt racing seems like one of
- 26:11the most efficient ways to go racing.
- 26:15That's that's all good but when you get to like ARCA trucks.
- 26:20Xfinity like the business model sucks.
- 26:24You're bringing money just sucks.
- 26:27Yep. So the true basically you have
- 26:29to pay for it. We can do it right?
- 26:31Like up racing, the team owners, they can make money and and
- 26:35that's important. And then we're if they can get a
- 26:38sponsor and pay a driver to drive their car, that's great.
- 26:41But there's not many racing series these days that can do
- 26:45that and doesn't matter what your resume is you're going to
- 26:50have to pay to go play. So although this is a beautiful
- 26:53conversation because it believes the truth.
- 26:56It's like wow. It is really true.
- 26:59Are two-time Champion. Just said he went to run a truck
- 27:02race and they said well you got any money.
- 27:05It's that's that's unheard of. So your own part I wanted to
- 27:08read more but I couldn't find the money and I don't want to
- 27:14pay for me to race you. I gotta go find a sponsor.
- 27:18To go to go to a car and look at me, I'm quite I just can't
- 27:22believe what I'm hearing. Wow, this is unbelievable.
- 27:29I'm looking at my notes because this this conversation, very
- 27:33important me because I feel like, even though I'm much older
- 27:37than you, I'm 60 I'll be 60, always 20, 30, or 32.
- 27:42I'm twice your age but you've taught me life lessons.
- 27:46I look at your men. No, Joe, you're extremely smart
- 27:51your you know We're going to we're going to change the course
- 27:55of this conversation now. So early, in my my racing career
- 28:04I never felt like I was talented enough to make enough money and
- 28:09I said to myself, if I ever make money, I'm going to do my very
- 28:13best with it because I'm from Missouri more Missouri.
- 28:16Frugal $10 is everything new. So when I did make it to NASCAR
- 28:19started to put all my money away, And I bought some rental
- 28:23property, 12, rental homes, they they did good.
- 28:27They did really good actually because I made, you know, I
- 28:30cashed in put that money in the stock market.
- 28:33So here's where we're going with this.
- 28:36I know for a fact that you are an incredible businessman, you
- 28:41are wise beyond your years. And I'm not going to tell the
- 28:44whole story. But you and I were involved in,
- 28:47you know, there was talk about maybe you buying some of my
- 28:51property. I wanted to leave North
- 28:53Carolina, I want to come back home, but there's articles in,
- 28:56in the news right now, about you, you know, my mother-in-law.
- 29:00She pays attention everything, she goes, Joey's involved in a
- 29:02business development in North - oh, Where does that come from?
- 29:09I mean, you're doing at all. Do you got a little teen there?
- 29:13Because you're not edible. That's okay.
- 29:16Tell everybody got to have somebody tell us about this
- 29:20business. Mine, there's only so much I can
- 29:23do. And I have this little chip on
- 29:27my shoulder that I want to prove that I can make money, not
- 29:29driving a race car. Awesome.
- 29:32And because I respect the hell out of people.
- 29:37That have come from Rags to Riches.
- 29:39I respect them so much and I tell those people all the time.
- 29:43I cheated in life. I said if you're an athlete like
- 29:49in ways, he cheated, you got a little unfair, advantage in
- 29:53business for drive. Around in circles.
- 29:56I pay you a lot of money. Wow, throw a ball.
- 30:00You, you know, you feel. I'm gonna throw a ball like it's
- 30:04in and not only do you get paid to do that.
- 30:06That the opportunities that come your way are Priceless?
- 30:11The people can, you know, it think about the people that you
- 30:14have in your phone number in your phone right now that you
- 30:17can just call CEOs of Fortune. 500 companies.
- 30:25Just call the driving surface fast.
- 30:28Yep. And they want to talk to me.
- 30:30I hate wasting an opportunity. I hate that.
- 30:33Like I have the most unfair advantage in life and to not
- 30:40take advantage of that is the biggest waste of all time and so
- 30:45and I don't know how long that I have that Advantage, right?
- 30:48Because I can be not relevant tomorrow, right?
- 30:51But I'm relevant right now. And there's worst fears what you
- 30:55just said. Well, I win again.
- 30:57We're at 100%. And so the opportunities have
- 31:01come by way to do certain things.
- 31:03Whether it's starting a studio down here or doing this
- 31:08development deal, that that's on my plate right now.
- 31:12Now it's important for me to prioritize things, right.
- 31:14And that's why I need people to help me because number one job
- 31:18is to go drive a race car. Well, number one job is to be a
- 31:20dad. That's not one doubt.
- 31:22It husband. Number two job is to drive a
- 31:24race car and make sure I never fail at that.
- 31:29And then number three is just, I like the sight of its kind of,
- 31:32it's my hobby, it's my hobby, I love learning about it, I love
- 31:37you know, the challenges that come along with it and like I
- 31:39said, the chip on my shoulder of just wanting to prove to myself
- 31:41that I can be more in a race car driver, right?
- 31:44Your dad launch, your dad's is very smart, my dad went rags to
- 31:47riches and I respect the hell out of him for it.
- 31:50And I feel like I'm I don't stack up in that department.
- 31:53Yet, and I want to try to get there.
- 31:54My goal, this is my, this is the, I said, stupid gold in my
- 31:58mind, I want to make as much risk as much money outside of
- 32:01the race cars are doing the race car.
- 32:03I want to get to that point. That's my goal.
- 32:05And so that's that's what I work towards something.
- 32:10I don't want to interrupt you but I want to make you feel
- 32:13good. My brother Rusty.
- 32:16Told me something that I don't think he'll I think it's a
- 32:20compliment to my brother. He owns nine dealerships in
- 32:24Knoxville Tennessee. He makes more money now than
- 32:26when he drove a race car and I'm sure Roger Penske and Rick
- 32:30Hendrick. So that's your goal.
- 32:33I want to be able to do that and in a way that I can, there's a
- 32:38phase 2 in my life, is a phase 2 in any, any athletes life, where
- 32:43you have, you You have this great success and things are
- 32:47going right in your earning potential is great.
- 32:49And then it's going to go away gone, just gone.
- 32:54And if you don't have anything else, you will be depressed.
- 32:58There's no doubt that if you don't have something else lined
- 33:01up or other things to do and something to challenge your
- 33:04mind, you are going to be a depressed person.
- 33:07We've seen it so many times with other athletes that this is
- 33:10their hundred percent in and it's great to be 100% in.
- 33:13But if you don't have something else, else when the day comes
- 33:17where you hang up your helmet or you're forced out of the sport
- 33:19or the other You're going to be depressed and I don't want that
- 33:25feeling, I love the challenge, I love growth.
- 33:28And you know, so with that and I know tell me about money is not
- 33:34everything, right? Like family is number one solves
- 33:36a lot of problems and the foundation is a big piece to
- 33:42what we do as well. The where we're able to really
- 33:45help other kids, and foster kids that have gone through a lot of
- 33:49different things to try to give them the opportunities that to
- 33:51do what I'm doing, right? It did become a writer.
- 33:55Hold on you, I understand what you're trying to say.
- 33:57I want everybody to know that there are people to go oh, he
- 34:02has money but but the Joey Logano Foundation.
- 34:06Joe you give so much money away. You raised a lot of money,
- 34:10you're good. Tell me about that, Foundation.
- 34:14Well, that's, that's that's the why, right?
- 34:17Everyone's got to have the, why, what you do and we've talked
- 34:22about on your show here, so far, we talked about winning races
- 34:25and we talked about making money, none of those matter in
- 34:30the grand scheme of things, it doesn't in life.
- 34:36The me, it's, yeah, that's just a measurement and a goal to
- 34:40chase, but it doesn't impact somebody's life it is.
- 34:44Sorry, it'll all be gone someday and no one's going to Care.
- 34:47No, one's going to care. Who won the Daytona 500?
- 34:49No, no one's going to care. Who won the championship in
- 34:52years, down the road. It's just going to be a stat in
- 34:55a book, right? I was reading the 50th
- 34:57Anniversary Book, NASCAR. When I was a kid, my mom just
- 35:02gave it back to me. She kept it for some reason, but
- 35:04I was reading the other day and I'm reading some of these names
- 35:07that one change. So I've never heard of right
- 35:11anyway, they were the man, at one point, they were the man
- 35:14Man, there are about it going on, you're thinking right?
- 35:18How crazy is that? So none of this even matters.
- 35:20So if you can impact somebody's life in a positive way, that's
- 35:24generational, that is how you continue a.
- 35:28It really does make a difference, right?
- 35:29And so the foundation we started to do that, we've given away, I
- 35:34think it's over six million dollars now over the last few
- 35:38years and it's all for foster kids, Foster families kids.
- 35:44It haven't been born into the best families, right?
- 35:47It is not their fault and don't Bad Card just for running to her
- 35:52crap family. I'm sorry.
- 35:53That's what it is and and there's a lot of people that are
- 35:57willing to invest their time to really help these kids and it's
- 36:03incredible. What these families are able to
- 36:05do and and we want to help support them.
- 36:07We want to help support the organizations that help place,
- 36:10the kids they help give these families the resources they need
- 36:13think. About think about this, think
- 36:15about just getting a phone, call one day and saying, hey, we have
- 36:18these two siblings that they need somebody and we're going to
- 36:21drop off today. What this happens, everything
- 36:26every day and think about except pressure Joey.
- 36:29Is that pressure or? No.
- 36:33No, it's not pressure. It's just what you're supposed
- 36:35to do, right? This is just what guy calls you
- 36:39to do, and it's where we feel like my wife and eyes hearts are
- 36:44Is with kids and families like that.
- 36:46And we work with organizations that give them the resources to
- 36:48do it. Even better.
- 36:50Yeah, now I know why you're so good because you're mature
- 36:53beyond your years but okay, so the reason I wanted to bring
- 36:56that up is because you know, we all see and hear and we know we
- 37:01know everybody knows the right thing to do but then they choose
- 37:04a different pattern. So you know, there's that thing.
- 37:06Well, I'd rather be a good person than to have money and,
- 37:10you know, that's not a fair statement.
- 37:12That's why I wanted to bring it up.
- 37:14Is that your heart is in the right place?
- 37:16Your I believe you're doing all the right things.
- 37:19I believe that you're calling, but getting back to that
- 37:22challenge, you know, you're a great race car driver.
- 37:25Now, you want to do like your dad and I agree with you.
- 37:29It what we do? That's cheating.
- 37:31Oh I hit a ball so give me 22 million dollars a year.
- 37:36So go back into your business decisions right now.
- 37:41Where are you with that business development?
- 37:43Well it happened, we are in the the very edge of.
- 37:47It's all about the rezoning process right now, which I've
- 37:50learned a lot about and be able Commissioners at all stuff,
- 37:53okay? It's been fun for me, right?
- 37:55Been a race car driver home, taking the trash out.
- 38:12And with the decisions at least I'm where we're going with
- 38:14things and so, yeah, it's we're not doing I think the article
- 38:19said, is like this 250 million dollar project.
- 38:22Listen, I'm selling the way, I'm rezoning.
- 38:24The last I'm selling the land, we may build a couple buildings
- 38:27with that but there's some, some apartments along with some
- 38:32retail space, possible restaurants and and some other
- 38:36things will probably move the studio on a part of the parcel
- 38:40as well. So, Just kind of building a
- 38:42little complex here. So should be cool.
- 38:45So I want to talk about Roger Penske, but I do want to let
- 38:50everybody know that I came down there because I was invited to
- 38:54race in the SRX series. I'm going to race, August 17th,
- 38:58Lucas Oil Speedway at week the Missouri.
- 39:01Now with me laying that out, I was at your studio because SRX
- 39:05used your studio. I was I was like my God, this
- 39:10Joey logano's. We're literally in his studio
- 39:13and Joe, he's renting it to SRX to use.
- 39:17That's another peek inside your mind.
- 39:20So tell me about that building because it's on the corner of a
- 39:24very popular Street. Tell me about that building,
- 39:27you're in right now, the studio, that's where I am right now.
- 39:30So this week who built this building as a toy box so that
- 39:35was what are your toys in? I like old cars.
- 39:41I had a little collection and and then the back part of the
- 39:44shop boat, I was building up slits those like to the bobsled
- 39:48part and then there was a kind of my toy box and then so it's
- 39:52kind of doing this, you know racing thing and I'm doing all
- 39:55these photo shoots and I'm going to the different places and of
- 39:59my these places aren't that. Nice.
- 40:01And I started looking around and I'm like all I got is like a
- 40:04psych wall and some lights like Should I have this?
- 40:08So it's good. That's not a few bucks.
- 40:11I'll put this the psyche wall up, right?
- 40:13It's just kind of a rounded edges on the bottom, right?
- 40:15Just kind of all it is and some lights.
- 40:17All right, whatever else I need. And I'll do my shoots at my
- 40:20building with, you know, with my sponsors and the relationship
- 40:24could be better. And and I can bring these people
- 40:27that are spending millions of dollars on a race car to a
- 40:29place. That's beautiful.
- 40:30Yeah, at least you can bring your sponsors to your place.
- 40:33So you got a reason, this is the unfair advantage that I have.
- 40:37I had the business before I had before, I had the business, but
- 40:41I had the customer before I had to business.
- 40:44And so I'm like, well, why wouldn't I do it?
- 40:47I'm not gonna lose. I can't fail here because I
- 40:49already have the business, not your, you got your people, I'm
- 40:52good. So solid, I got the building,
- 40:56but you're, but you're smart enough to recognize that you
- 40:59it's a pattern, right? And so we kind of started
- 41:02working on that and like, okay, now let's that's really your
- 41:06garden. Well, and then we open it up to
- 41:08more, you know, stuff. And then obviously, I'm very
- 41:11interwove in into the NASCAR industry.
- 41:13So we did a lot of doing a lot of NASCAR shoots and that kind
- 41:16of steps out to doing other things, right?
- 41:18Lowe's is local. Here, we do a lot of shoots for
- 41:21them and it's kind of keep going and it's like, well, I need a
- 41:24production team right now. I just renting a building.
- 41:27I want to go to Next Level. So we just merged with the
- 41:29production team that we've used a lot.
- 41:31And so now we're kind of all, you know, inclusive can do
- 41:34everything, you know, from the beginning.
- 41:37The end of a shoot. So it's been a fun ride learning
- 41:40about that stuff is well, Elsa. But that's gonna saying that the
- 41:44opportunity sit there in front of me.
- 41:45It was advantage of it, how do you not do it?
- 41:48So it kind of grows its own legs and, and goes a long and, you
- 41:53know, I probably could have grown it a lot quicker.
- 41:57If I had more time and wanted to, but I kind means
- 41:59circumstances learn and it kind of eventually came along so
- 42:04well, We've already been talking for 43 minutes and, but if it's
- 42:09been really good, I want to talk about the great, Roger Penske,
- 42:13your car owner. So, you know, when I was younger
- 42:18and I said my brother Rusty, it was kind of a bad thing because,
- 42:22oh, your brother or, you know what your dad.
- 42:26But listen, we all got to have somebody Rusty tells me.
- 42:31He says Herman I like the pattern myself after Roger
- 42:34Penske and he just flat says it. And I know that's one of the
- 42:38reasons. Rusty has nine dealerships and
- 42:41you know, it was Roger that taught Rusty as far as
- 42:44dealerships go. You got to think big Rusty tells
- 42:49me a lot. So I spilled my guts first just
- 42:53now to you, because Roger Penske, do you ever reach out to
- 42:58him? I know it's all about
- 42:59competition right now. I Stand that but you cannot
- 43:02ignore the Roger penske's. One of the greatest businessman
- 43:07in the world. Not the United States.
- 43:10Do you have do you ever say, hey, Roger if you ever said
- 43:13anything about business, we've talked about it obviously and
- 43:19for a lot of reasons. Yeah, I want to learn educate
- 43:21myself but I also want to be educated on what he's doing so I
- 43:27can help do my job better for him.
- 43:31The best way to I think learn is the watch and learn.
- 43:38By example, me to think you're worried about business, you want
- 43:41him to know, you're gonna be in a race car driver.
- 43:44That's my number one thing and it is.
- 43:48But it's not just that with him. Like I watched about how he
- 43:53handles people, how he handles situations like the guy has
- 43:59grown a, an incredible. Business the old-fashioned way.
- 44:03Right now, what he does he didn't come up with the new
- 44:07social media platform. He didn't come up with the
- 44:10something that's never been done before.
- 44:12No shortcuts, no shortcuts. He's done it old school slow
- 44:18growth. We call it slow growth.
- 44:20It's obvious, pretty accelerated, but, but he's never
- 44:23seen a couple billion dollars. Yeah.
- 44:25Is there a stop growing? But he didn't like hit it out of
- 44:29nowhere and came. Something and all of a sudden
- 44:32now he's got a couple of bees, right?
- 44:33Like that's how it works for him.
- 44:35Dealerships PTL, right? And then all the other things
- 44:40like he just kind of realized that I am.
- 44:42I'm buying a lot of this. Well, I loan Product Company
- 44:45from buying a lot of it, and then he's got some great people
- 44:48around him. It's all in her woven into
- 44:50racing and Motorsports, which is this true passion, and it's
- 44:55really interesting to see it all come down.
- 44:58But the one thing I noticed about Roger that Oddly stands
- 45:01out. Is his memory is incredible.
- 45:04Hmm, he's got a, the most incredible memory of of not just
- 45:09things that have happened to him, but the people he meets
- 45:13this guy, would I've been with them and seen it.
- 45:17Do it. He'll walk into a dealership and
- 45:21know the sales person. Just to just one of the
- 45:23salespeople, one of their 8086 dealership, one of a 70,000
- 45:28employees. Oh, my gosh.
- 45:30No surname. He'll go into the repair shop
- 45:35and he'll go. Hey Jake!
- 45:37What's happening? How you been like and I flew up
- 45:40with him and I'm thinking he must have been studying all
- 45:42these veins or something and know the stuff.
- 45:43Nope, he meets somebody one time and he knows their name and I've
- 45:48heard this from so many people that work for been there.
- 45:50Like, I don't know how he does it.
- 45:52He's got something special that allows him to do that.
- 45:56And When he takes that Personal Touch to the way he does, things
- 46:04are such a professional level on top of it.
- 46:07It's Untouchable. That's, that's what makes them
- 46:09so great. That's what I've seen.
- 46:10That makes them stand out. So much is that he expects
- 46:13excellence and does so many things yet, he can somehow keep
- 46:19it all in lined in his brain. I don't know how he does it and
- 46:22we all know that story. Around your age.
- 46:26You're 32 years old right now, around your age.
- 46:29He decides to quit being a race car driver, Roger Penske, quits
- 46:33being a race car driver because his business is doing so good,
- 46:36and then he hires Mark Donohue and all these great race car.
- 46:40Drivers to me, it's unbelievable.
- 46:42Listening to you, talk like this and Joey, look how great you
- 46:47are. Let me brag on you.
- 46:49You're you're 32 years old and you've already done it all now,
- 46:54you're young. So, You want to keep doing it
- 46:55all but I put things into perspective, you're his age when
- 47:00he started doing business and you've already done it all
- 47:04buddy. You got it going on right now.
- 47:06That's that's pretty incredible because I know his history.
- 47:10Obviously, there's Rusty, drove for him forever.
- 47:15It can all end tomorrow though. Yes, yeah, this is like that.
- 47:20I can wreck on the way home today.
- 47:21You can be so that leads to this the new wave in.
- 47:28NASCAR is drivers statistically like Tony Stewart like Jeff
- 47:34Gordon like Bobby, the Bonnie, Jeff Burton everybody, whether
- 47:39they had a choice or not whether it was an injury or not. 42
- 47:43years old, we're Harvick 45. I'm not saying, I don't want a
- 47:52number, but do you think everybody used to retire at 50?
- 47:57Do you think 40-ish is the new number?
- 48:02It seems like it, you're making more money, it's easier to
- 48:07squabble it away. Maybe tired of it too much.
- 48:14I don't know what it. I don't know.
- 48:16What it'll be probably balance as much as anything.
- 48:21It's not important. I just wanted a conversation
- 48:23about, you know, it's not on my radar yet.
- 48:29But, and in five years, maybe I have a different perspective,
- 48:31right? Your kids, get older, and you're
- 48:33starting to miss things, right, baby pretentious, I don't know
- 48:38right now, it doesn't right now, I like going.
- 48:40Racing. I want my to see me race.
- 48:43I want my kids to see me work, right?
- 48:44That's a the number one thing I learned from my dad is.
- 48:47I watched him work. I watched him.
- 48:49Come home with grease on his pants every day.
- 48:51I watched him, go out there and climb under trucks.
- 48:54He ran everywhere. I don't know why he never walks,
- 48:57he runs that must be would tell us the run run get that night
- 49:00run. Right.
- 49:01Right. And that's like that's what like
- 49:03that's what I saw my own laundry but I want
- 49:45there is nothing wrong with the sense of urgency because there
- 49:49is a great quote out there very philosophical quote that the
- 49:53biggest mistake wanting was Kobe.
- 49:55Bryant the biggest mistake we can make us thinking we have
- 49:59time. Hmm.
- 50:01Yes, but it's not heavy. It's just maybe your dad ran
- 50:04everywhere because he felt a sense of urgency.
- 50:06And when I work for Rusty, we're in a little shop.
- 50:10I mean, it's 10:00 at night. Go get me.
- 50:13A 9/16 wrench and I'd walk or run.
- 50:16It's like why? Yeah, I think we both come from
- 50:24families. That have a lot of energy.
- 50:26Yeah, we don't sleep much. It's like, go keep going.
- 50:30Joey, there was 51 minutes. And now we come to the end of
- 50:34the show where we ask every single great race car driver.
- 50:38You know, I don't I don't expect you to know that Kenny
- 50:42conversation started out with Tony Stewart Mark Martin Bobby
- 50:46Labonte, Kevin Harvick the greats.
- 50:48Hmm and we end the show like this.
- 50:52It's very respectful but at one point or another fans want your
- 50:56opinion. So we will not get you in
- 51:00trouble because I don't let any driver get drawable.
- 51:02That's what Kenny conversation is not about that, but we got to
- 51:05talk about NASCAR and it's three questions.
- 51:09The first one is your thoughts on, NASCAR today?
- 51:14What is your thoughts? My thoughts.
- 51:18Are I like that? We are trying new things that we
- 51:24are going to new places new venues.
- 51:26We saw it in st. Louis, where you are now?
- 51:29Where we just were huge success? We saw it l.a.
- 51:32Coliseum things. We never thought we would do
- 51:34huge success. Road America was a big success.
- 51:40Going to new tracks. New venues going to tracks.
- 51:43One time I think is where we need.
- 51:45Need to be and making every race and event in.
- 51:50I don't think as many tracks of did it better than st.
- 51:52Louis. This weekend but they do a great
- 51:55job. So I think as far as a sport
- 51:58going to different places, we are doing great.
- 52:01I like that. Okay.
- 52:02So the next one is the next gen car.
- 52:07This, this new car. Now, I want to make you feel
- 52:10comfortable. Let you know that All the other
- 52:13great drivers, all the other Champions before you, they have
- 52:15told me their real opinion, the next-gen car.
- 52:21What are your thoughts on this new style race car that is now
- 52:25in NASCAR? It's different.
- 52:32That was funny too. It's like there's pros and cons
- 52:38to it like everything else but it is changed the way we've
- 52:41raced it changes the way we set up a car, it changes the way we
- 52:48practice the car or what we can and can't do right during
- 52:52practices. It changes the way we evolved.
- 52:56A race car from building parts and now we buy parts.
- 53:03That's changed everything. Some of it, good, right?
- 53:08Some of it in a good way if because it's brought new
- 53:12ownership into the sport new interest into the sport is also
- 53:18the old-school part of me that really loved practice and really
- 53:21loved like the the creativity that of building a new car and
- 53:28coming up with new crazy things that are way outside cannot gain
- 53:31an edge, is what this car you cannot gain an edge.
- 53:34Can't I missed that? Art.
- 53:36But at the same time, I'm not getting beat by much these days
- 53:40either, right? Like, it's really there.
- 53:42It's like, it's the decisions you make on the car and
- 53:47decisions, you make behind the wheel.
- 53:49That's it. No one's got a better part than
- 53:51me, right? Like maybe maybe a manufacturer
- 53:55may be ahead of one or the other, you know, here and there.
- 53:58But we have the same chassis. We have same Springs that we can
- 54:01all buy. We got like all the same parts
- 54:03and pieces we can all be part. Part of right engines and arrow
- 54:07or some of the pieces. We can't really touch on a whole
- 54:10bunch. It can't affect, but everything
- 54:12else we can. So the way you call the race,
- 54:14the way you set up a car and you work up your workout, your team
- 54:19and pick stops and all that stuff matters, so much more now.
- 54:24So it's just change the way we raced part of.
- 54:27He misses the old school way part of me really loves the new
- 54:30way and just what it is. So I think it's This is
- 54:36different. So we know that the last
- 54:40question here conversation, we know that this next gen car, the
- 54:47competition is so tight. Now that it makes the drivers
- 54:51drive hard get loose, slam up into each other fist, fights are
- 54:55breaking out in the meanwhile, the TV ratings are going up, the
- 54:59interest in our sport is going up.
- 55:01So, with that being said, the last question conversation Fines
- 55:07and penalties. What are your thoughts on the
- 55:10unbelievable quarter of a million dollar?
- 55:15Fines and Driver suspensions. Chase Elliott.
- 55:18You cannot race this week. What are your thoughts of this
- 55:22unprecedented penalties and fines?
- 55:26Has to happen, has happened. It has to happen.
- 55:31We need somebody to protect us from ourselves.
- 55:36Is somebody to officiate the sport.
- 55:39It has to happen. You can't let the prisoners run
- 55:42the prison. Hey, you're right.
- 55:46If you let us all have at it, right from building a racecar,
- 55:51we're all going to keep pushing the limits it because it's
- 55:54competition, and we're going to keep going and going on here.
- 55:56Yard. Somebody's got a rain is back in
- 55:58and there has to be a penalty. Big enough to bait.
- 56:01You say, don't do that. Like that's, that's a that's a
- 56:05year Ender, right? Like you can't afford to do
- 56:08that. I feel like Nascar has done a
- 56:11pretty good job at that. The other piece that needs to
- 56:13happen, is there needs to be consistency.
- 56:15You can't have a penalty one week and that the next week and
- 56:18then the next week you do in the next week.
- 56:19You don't like if it's wrong and you penalize somebody the next
- 56:23time it happens. You have to do it again.
- 56:26Yeah. Active.
- 56:27And they've seen the done a pretty good job at that.
- 56:31I don't know if any officiating of any sport.
- 56:35Bats, a thousand at this one, very like, whether it's
- 56:38football, baseball, they're gonna miss a call every now and
- 56:41again, right? And that's, there's probably no
- 56:44different that you get a missed call every now and again, right
- 56:47restart might not look just as good as it needs to, and
- 56:50somebody might get away with one or Pit Stop, write.
- 56:53Something might been an uncontrolled tire and they got
- 56:55away with it. They didn't write like there's
- 56:58going to be some balls and strike calls there.
- 57:01But when there's blatantly obvious things that all of us,
- 57:05see, and know you better make a call and it better be the same
- 57:09as the last time you did it. And so I think NASCAR's done
- 57:13that and it has to continue the have to do that.
- 57:18I do think you're racing is getting harder and harder
- 57:20because all the cars are going the same speed.
- 57:22They're all the same and so you can't afford to let somebody go.
- 57:26Be more like we used to and expect to get that back Camp.
- 57:30Okay give me a racist. Yeah, and if I let somebody go,
- 57:37I'm probably not going to pass them back later like and and
- 57:40this possible is very possible that hey I may not have the
- 57:43fastest car today, but if I get Emily, they're not passing me,
- 57:46you know. So I can't give up a spot and
- 57:49then the guy trying to pass and gets pissed off because he can't
- 57:51get around me, and then you're mad because he got hit you, like
- 57:55it's just the whole thing. It just it's it's something
- 57:58that's what it is. You really bring up a good
- 58:01point. You got my mind wandering
- 58:03because years ago, Harry Gant would say, you know, you're back
- 58:07there for 10th or 12th and Harry would say, boy we're not racing
- 58:11each other, we're racing that leader, let me go or holding
- 58:14each other up and and nowadays with the stage racing you're
- 58:19rewarded points for a top 10. So yeah I think we'll go
- 58:25everybody. Erase them all.
- 58:28Yeah, Joey you were absolutely incredible and I'm going to tell
- 58:32you when I feel strongly, I tell people the way I feel.
- 58:37I-i've been trying to get you on the show for a month and a half
- 58:41because I know, I know this is gonna sound weird, but I really
- 58:47relate with you because we're not conflicted you and I are not
- 58:51conflicted but you did not disappoint me because We are
- 58:55cheating in life. You mean to tell me, I'm going
- 58:58to get paid to drive a racecar. Yeah, I got my first paycheck
- 59:02when I was gosh. I was, I don't know,
- 59:0520-something years old being a, I was a crew chief and two cups
- 59:09yours, but Joe you've been wonderful.
- 59:12You made me better. I want to thank you and
- 59:14everybody for deciding to do the Kenny conversation.
- 59:18You're a good man. Well, thank you Kenny and I
- 59:21appreciate that. You keep giving back to our
- 59:24sport. Because if it wasn't for, this
- 59:27isn't an old man joke by the like, but if it wasn't for the
- 59:31previous generation, still caring about sport, there is no
- 59:35next gen of any. And right, not not just next-gen
- 59:39card. Next gen, NASCAR, next gen,
- 59:41Motorsports of any kind because people like you that have stuck
- 59:48around in a sport and then just take and leave so many do that.
- 59:52But you, you were involved. The sport as a driver and now
- 59:57you're still involved at the sport whether it's from this and
- 1:00:00still talking to our fans and helping them transition to the
- 1:00:04next generation of racers. That is what continues, a sport
- 1:00:09and continues it to grow for next month.
- 1:00:11So for people like you is the reason why I'm here and so thank
- 1:00:15you for that and hopefully I can be that person for the next
- 1:00:17generation and and touche brother.
- 1:00:19I like it when you and Kevin Harvick get up into TV booth on
- 1:00:22Saturday. So okay, that's Sit, I want to
- 1:00:26thank you so much. Remember everybody, we love to
- 1:00:29remind you that we're in podcast form.
- 1:00:31This was a long conversation, you can start it.
