- 0:38This is Scott Becker with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:41Podcast.
- 0:42We're thrilled today to be joined by doctor
- 0:44Zeeshan
- 0:45Anwar, and doctor Anwar is gonna talk about
- 0:47his career, leadership trends he's watching, and a
- 0:50lot more. Doctor Anwar, can you take a
- 0:52moment and introduce yourself?
- 0:54Thank you, Scott, for having me. I'm Zeeshan
- 0:57Anwar. I'm the assistant chief for hospital medicine
- 1:00at Guthrie as well as associate chief medical
- 1:03officer for Pennsylvania hospital sites.
- 1:06In these dual roles, I oversee the hospital
- 1:09medicine service line, across the system
- 1:12while leading operational
- 1:14quality and patient flow initiatives.
- 1:16My focus is on strengthening discharge reliability,
- 1:19improving throughput,
- 1:21optimizing utilization
- 1:23practices,
- 1:24and ensuring our teams have that structure and
- 1:27clarity needed to deliver safe and timely care.
- 1:30I have been with Guthrie.
- 1:32This is my fourth year, and, I'm happy
- 1:34to be here.
- 1:35Well, thank you so much for joining us.
- 1:37When you look at health care today,
- 1:40what are the big trends that you have
- 1:41your eyes on that you're watching closely?
- 1:44Yeah. So that that's a great question. So
- 1:47we are rural health care, and, I'm gonna
- 1:50talk about a little bit more on rural
- 1:52health care. And, as you know,
- 1:54rural hospitals are operating at the intersection of
- 1:58historic opportunity
- 1:59and historic risk.
- 2:01As a leaders, we should aggressively
- 2:04pursue federal funding,
- 2:05advance digital and workforce innovation,
- 2:09reinforce,
- 2:11financial sustainability,
- 2:12and protect access to essential services.
- 2:16The trends we are watching,
- 2:19number one,
- 2:20we are looking closely
- 2:22to,
- 2:23a new government initiative, which
- 2:26is RHT,
- 2:27rural
- 2:28health transformation
- 2:30program.
- 2:31And as we know that it will distribute
- 2:34a dollar 50,000,000,000 from 2026
- 2:37to twenty twenty thirty,
- 2:39which is roughly 10,000,000,000 annually
- 2:41and and with the 50 states will get
- 2:44$200,000,000
- 2:45per state award.
- 2:47And for
- 2:48for one state, I think a billion dollar
- 2:50in in five years.
- 2:52So
- 2:53this fund is essential
- 2:55to support
- 2:56access,
- 2:58facility
- 2:59modernization,
- 3:01workforce stabilization,
- 3:02and innovative
- 3:03care models.
- 3:05We are a little concerned, though, because the
- 3:07same legislation
- 3:09introduces long term Medicaid
- 3:11cuts that could offset gains and and and
- 3:14deepen our financial stress.
- 3:17And second, we are
- 3:19watching
- 3:21immigration
- 3:22reforms
- 3:23and particularly
- 3:25presidential
- 3:26proclamation,
- 3:27regarding h one b visa fees, which is
- 3:31additional 100,000
- 3:32k fee,
- 3:33which is,
- 3:35directly affecting
- 3:37us, especially rural health care.
- 3:39We have some providers who couldn't come
- 3:43to work because,
- 3:45they required 100,000 k fee to get their
- 3:48visa process.
- 3:49We have, many nurses. We recruited international nurses
- 3:53who couldn't come
- 3:54to work in this busy time.
- 3:56We had applied for a waivership program, which
- 3:59is one of the,
- 4:00waiver
- 4:01we can apply for as a rural health
- 4:04care, but we haven't heard anything. We are
- 4:06very hopeful that in the coming weeks or
- 4:09so,
- 4:10there will be some
- 4:12some decision on that.
- 4:14But we are so dependent on those workers
- 4:16to
- 4:18to operationalize
- 4:19our our functions.
- 4:21Then,
- 4:22also, we are looking for telehealth and digital
- 4:25care
- 4:26into
- 4:272026.
- 4:28As you know,
- 4:30we are,
- 4:32as a rural health care to improve access,
- 4:34we utilize telehealth,
- 4:38a lot.
- 4:39And as
- 4:41as telehealth flexibility is going to expire at
- 4:44the end of this month, actually,
- 4:46unless it is extended by by congress.
- 4:49So we are, watching that too.
- 4:52So these are the these are the hot
- 4:54issues,
- 4:55we are looking at.
- 4:57Thank you. And then when you look at
- 4:59this year coming up,
- 5:01Zeeshan, doctor Anwar, what are you most excited
- 5:03about and most focused on for this year?
- 5:07Yes. So we are
- 5:10we are focused on, multiple things.
- 5:13We
- 5:15are working
- 5:16very hard on cost containment.
- 5:19We are working on reducing waste.
- 5:22We
- 5:23are negotiating
- 5:25with peers.
- 5:26And, also, we are looking at our master
- 5:29service agreements with different, our vendors
- 5:32as well as some provider services
- 5:34to improve on those.
- 5:36Also, long term capital,
- 5:38planning,
- 5:39we are doing. So so these are the
- 5:41main things we are focused on, but we
- 5:44what we are excited about,
- 5:46we are excited about digital transformation.
- 5:50We are working with,
- 5:51a vendor,
- 5:52Artisight.
- 5:54And, with that, we are developing,
- 5:57AI powered patient mobility detection
- 6:00to reduce falls,
- 6:01pressure injury prevention.
- 6:04Also, we are, utilizing
- 6:06AI vendor to to automate our documentation,
- 6:10help in clinical note synthesis,
- 6:12to reduce clinical cognitive load, improve
- 6:16safety surveillance, and streamline documentation
- 6:19while maintaining the accuracy and, and compliance.
- 6:23We are also focused on
- 6:25and excited about,
- 6:28working on making our organization as a higher
- 6:32live reliable organization,
- 6:34improving our safety culture and human experience,
- 6:38within the system.
- 6:40The last one I wanted to mention is,
- 6:43we are also focused on our service line
- 6:46strengthening and clinical
- 6:48standardization
- 6:50by,
- 6:51improving our
- 6:52clinical pathways
- 6:54within the hospital, how we treat patient to
- 6:56reduce variation and improve evidence based medicine.
- 7:00Thank you. And, doctor Anwar, you've had this
- 7:02incredible leadership
- 7:04career.
- 7:05Take a moment. What advice would you give
- 7:07to emerging and evolving leaders?
- 7:10Yeah. So
- 7:12I'll be very blunt on some few few
- 7:14things.
- 7:15Number one, staffing. So
- 7:18when we talk about staffing, so what I
- 7:20would say is
- 7:22work on
- 7:24recruiting
- 7:25a players
- 7:26if you can
- 7:28and retain them.
- 7:30So do not waste time on c players.
- 7:35Two c players equivalent to one a player.
- 7:38So
- 7:39try to engage them if it they don't
- 7:42go up to b or a.
- 7:44You have to replace with with the a
- 7:46players or at least b players
- 7:49and and polish your b players to become
- 7:52a player.
- 7:53I think that's where
- 7:55we can improve our efficiency.
- 7:58We can perform
- 7:59better,
- 8:00and we can save in that. And I
- 8:02think the organization,
- 8:05whoever
- 8:06able to figure out how to retain their
- 8:09a players will be
- 8:11more successful.
- 8:13I'm talking about
- 8:14health care.
- 8:15Other things,
- 8:17my advice will be
- 8:19continuous improvement.
- 8:21Keep
- 8:22improving
- 8:23even it's a tiny bit,
- 8:25but keep improving.
- 8:27Keep your trend
- 8:28in a good way
- 8:30towards a good side.
- 8:32Improve your processes.
- 8:34Work
- 8:35on patient safety
- 8:36and quality,
- 8:38and that where
- 8:39your financial KPIs will improve.
- 8:43Optimize
- 8:44physician, nurses, and other employees' workload.
- 8:48That is also very important, to engage,
- 8:51providers and nurses because that's where we are
- 8:55struggling and shortages are. We do not want
- 8:58that turnover to go higher.
- 9:01No. Thank you so much. I I, overall,
- 9:04love this concept of really focus on your
- 9:07top performers. Keep on helping them accelerate. Work
- 9:09on your b performers. Try to get them
- 9:11to become a performers,
- 9:12and don't spend too much time on your
- 9:15c performers unless they're willing to put in
- 9:17the effort to try and be great. I
- 9:19I I love that, and I I do
- 9:20think taking care of your team, taking care
- 9:22of your people, taking care of staffing, and,
- 9:25your physicians, so, so important.
- 9:28Doctor Anwar, what a great pleasure to visit
- 9:30with you today on the Becker's Healthcare podcast.
- 9:33Thank you so much for taking the time.
- 9:35Thank you very, very much. Thank you for
- 9:37having me, Scott.
