- 0:08Speaker 1: Oh, and welcome into another episode of The check O Daily.
- 0:11Speaker 1: It's Andrew de Checko, Eagles beat reporter for insidethbirds dot Com,
- 0:15Speaker 1: and we're going to continue on with our position battles
- 0:18Speaker 1: in training camp with a look at the defense today,
- 0:21Speaker 1: and there's a lot of really interesting ones. We'll start
- 0:24Speaker 1: with the most notable, and that is who will be
- 0:29Speaker 1: the number two safety aligning opposite Drew mccouba when the
- 0:32Speaker 1: Eagles kick off the season September thirteenth. The candidates are
- 0:39Speaker 1: Marcus Epps, who's a veteran, Michael Carter the second, who
- 0:43Speaker 1: is a nickelback by trade but making the transition to safety,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and really those are the only players that I could
- 0:51Speaker 1: really foresee factoring into this conversation. They have other players
- 0:55Speaker 1: who are vying for the fourth job, such as rookie
- 0:58Speaker 1: Cole was Nesky and on Sam Mark Maximus Pulley, an
- 1:02Speaker 1: undrafted free agent, but the main entree is the number
- 1:08Speaker 1: two safety spot and that's what we're going to focus
- 1:10Speaker 1: on to start. Marcus EPs is a player that is
- 1:14Speaker 1: very dependable. He is fundamentally sound, doesn't have the range
- 1:20Speaker 1: or athleticism that you like, but he makes up for it.
- 1:24Speaker 1: With instincts, dependability, discipline, and those are qualities that go
- 1:30Speaker 1: a long way with coordinator Vic Fangio. I don't know
- 1:33Speaker 1: that you need to be a superstar to excel at
- 1:36Speaker 1: the safety position in this defense, in a Vic Fangio defense,
- 1:39Speaker 1: and certainly not when you have three cornerbacks like Quinna, Mitchell, Cooper,
- 1:45Speaker 1: Dejen Enrique Woman. So I would imagine that going into
- 1:50Speaker 1: training camp, Marcus EPs is going to have the leg up,
- 1:53Speaker 1: and he probably should because he has experience working in
- 1:56Speaker 1: his favor. He's been in the league, he started for
- 1:58Speaker 1: different teams, he's been in different systems.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And he knows how to play. He's a true pro.
- 2:04Speaker 1: But I have to think that while all of that
- 2:07Speaker 1: is great, and Vic Vango certainly gave him a ringing endorsement,
- 2:11Speaker 1: you're naturally going to be intrigued with what the unknown is,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and in this case, that is Michael Carter, the second
- 2:17Speaker 1: who hasn't played safety in his career at the pro level.
- 2:22Speaker 1: He was a high level nickel defender during his time
- 2:27Speaker 1: with the Jets, and the Eagles clearly liked what they
- 2:31Speaker 1: saw when he had to step in for an injury
- 2:34Speaker 1: Brandon Johnson in the season finale where he played over
- 2:37Speaker 1: sixty snaps at safety that they wanted to give him
- 2:41Speaker 1: a longer look at the position. And Joe Casper, Eagles
- 2:45Speaker 1: defensive backs coach, has a good relationship that predates their
- 2:52Speaker 1: time in Philadelphia because Joe Casper was on the Duke
- 2:56Speaker 1: football staff when Michael Carter was there, and I I
- 3:00Speaker 1: have to imagine that that will help the transition a
- 3:03Speaker 1: little bit.
- 3:03Speaker 2: He'll be able to answer questions.
- 3:05Speaker 1: He knows how to tower things to Michael's strengths and
- 3:09Speaker 1: it's a fascinating battle. I understand that they are probably
- 3:13Speaker 1: underwhelming as far as most of those on the outside
- 3:17Speaker 1: are able to kind of gauge, and while that may
- 3:21Speaker 1: not be entirely inaccurate, I still don't think that the
- 3:25Speaker 1: Eagles should add to the position for the sake of
- 3:27Speaker 1: doing so, certainly before they get a really good glimpse
- 3:30Speaker 1: at the players that they have in house who have
- 3:32Speaker 1: been working with them through the spring and all of that.
- 3:36Speaker 1: And so I look at those two players and they're
- 3:39Speaker 1: differing skill sets and what they bring to the table,
- 3:42Speaker 1: And for me, I'm more intrigued with Michael Carter the
- 3:44Speaker 1: second because of his movement ability, his range, yes, he
- 3:48Speaker 1: doesn't have the same size as Marcus Aps, who's two
- 3:54Speaker 1: hundred pounds or over Michael Carter's five foot ten one
- 3:57Speaker 1: hundred and eighty five pounds. At least that's his listed measurables,
- 4:00Speaker 1: so you maybe have some concern pairing him opposite of
- 4:03Speaker 1: Drew mccuba, who is also listed at one to eighty
- 4:06Speaker 1: six at five to eleven, And the durability concerns are
- 4:10Speaker 1: going to be there because when you have to be
- 4:12Speaker 1: a willing participant and and run support and things like that,
- 4:16Speaker 1: all of that comes into play. But I look at
- 4:20Speaker 1: how the safety position has evolved and the trends around
- 4:24Speaker 1: the NFL, and players like a Drew mccuba, like a
- 4:28Speaker 1: Michael Carter the second are sort of the new wave
- 4:31Speaker 1: of safeties in this league. You don't see the Troy
- 4:33Speaker 1: Palamalus or players of that modle.
- 4:36Speaker 2: The Brian Dawkins is of.
- 4:37Speaker 1: The world, the bigger body guys who are thumpers and
- 4:41Speaker 1: kind of more I don't want to say one dimensional,
- 4:44Speaker 1: but they sort of resemble that of a throwback type
- 4:48Speaker 1: of player. I think right now, the latest craze or
- 4:52Speaker 1: the intrigue with adding smaller players is that it allows
- 4:55Speaker 1: your defense to be multiple. You can do some different
- 4:57Speaker 1: things with them on the back end, and when you
- 4:59Speaker 1: look at how how that position is evolving. For me,
- 5:02Speaker 1: I'm pretty intrigued with Michael Carter the second. The Eagles
- 5:05Speaker 1: certainly are at least enough so to give him a
- 5:07Speaker 1: really long look at safety, and at worst he'll be
- 5:11Speaker 1: the number three. Marcus Ops is going in as the favorite.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I thought he had some nice moments. He's had some
- 5:17Speaker 1: nice moments in his Eagles career, but even last season
- 5:20Speaker 1: when he was pressed into service going, you know, stepping
- 5:23Speaker 1: in for Drew mccouba, I thought he did some good
- 5:25Speaker 1: things there as well. There's always going to be limitations
- 5:28Speaker 1: to his game, however, and that is something to take
- 5:30Speaker 1: into account. He doesn't necessarily have the same allure as
- 5:34Speaker 1: a red blanketship even but the limitations, I guess are
- 5:39Speaker 1: relatively on the same level. So that's that position, and
- 5:44Speaker 1: I really boil it down to just those two players.
- 5:47Speaker 1: We'll find out soon who has the edge, but I
- 5:49Speaker 1: imagine that Marcus Ops is going to go in, excuse me,
- 5:52Speaker 1: go in as the.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Odds on favorite.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Moving down in the defense, we have the edge rusher
- 5:59Speaker 1: position where it would appear that Jaylyox Hunt is the
- 6:06Speaker 1: odds on favorite to align opposite Jonathan Grenard and take
- 6:10Speaker 1: on the second most amount of snaps in the pass
- 6:13Speaker 1: rusher group, but Nolan Smith might have something to say
- 6:17Speaker 1: about it. And Nolan Smith is a player that I
- 6:20Speaker 1: feel has sort of not been forgotten about, but it's
- 6:24Speaker 1: just assumed that he's going to slide in as the
- 6:27Speaker 1: third edge rusher, coming off the bench and playing meaningful
- 6:30Speaker 1: snaps in that capacity. I wouldn't be so sure. Because
- 6:34Speaker 1: Nolan's a younger player. He's going to enter motivated and
- 6:38Speaker 1: looking to carve out a larger role. Injuries have precluded
- 6:42Speaker 1: him from taking that next step forward. He had the
- 6:45Speaker 1: triceeps tear in the Super Bowl and he had a
- 6:48Speaker 1: triceps injury last season. But Nolan is a player that
- 6:53Speaker 1: is incredibly physical at the line of scrimmage. I would
- 6:56Speaker 1: argue that pound for pound, he's one of the more
- 6:58Speaker 1: physical defensive linemen rushers in the league. Throws his body around,
- 7:04Speaker 1: setting the edge with authority and violence. That's fine, and
- 7:07Speaker 1: that's super integral to what the Eagles need from that position.
- 7:11Speaker 2: But I would like to see a little bit.
- 7:13Speaker 1: More from him in terms of pass rush, and that's
- 7:16Speaker 1: not something that we've seen on a consistent basis.
- 7:19Speaker 2: It's come in spurts.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I look at the twenty twenty four postseason where he
- 7:23Speaker 1: was wrecking shop and really factoring as a pass rusher
- 7:28Speaker 1: where the Eagles needed him to do so. But you
- 7:30Speaker 1: want to see more of that and for him to
- 7:32Speaker 1: really take that next step and really challenge Joe exs Hunt,
- 7:35Speaker 1: he's going to have to really dial in his pass
- 7:39Speaker 1: rush acumen and become a little bit more of a
- 7:42Speaker 1: threat there on a regular basis. And I think that
- 7:45Speaker 1: he's going to enter training camp motivated because this is
- 7:48Speaker 1: a good opportunity for him to kind of put his
- 7:52Speaker 1: stamp on that position. And there's a lot of questions,
- 7:55Speaker 1: not necessarily viewing him as a disappointment, certainly that would
- 7:59Speaker 1: be unfair, but maybe there's questions as to whether or
- 8:02Speaker 1: not he can be a top tier pass rusher or
- 8:06Speaker 1: if he's going to be more of a complimentary piece
- 8:08Speaker 1: for his career. So he's still really young, he plays
- 8:11Speaker 1: with some juice and now it's just about putting practices
- 8:15Speaker 1: together and becoming a more consistent player as a rusher,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and you know he's gonna deliver in terms of run
- 8:24Speaker 1: support and things like that, but we'll have to see.
- 8:26Speaker 1: You could also make the argument that someone like Nolan
- 8:29Speaker 1: Smith would benefit in a reserve role where he's now
- 8:32Speaker 1: rotating in for preservation purposes. He's not the biggest guy
- 8:36Speaker 1: in the world, but I can tell you that looks
- 8:38Speaker 1: like he added some muscle in the offseason, which it
- 8:40Speaker 1: will be hugely critical.
- 8:42Speaker 2: So we'll have to wait and see.
- 8:44Speaker 1: But the player that I've talked about at length on
- 8:46Speaker 1: these podcasts, I've written about him on Inside the Birds
- 8:49Speaker 1: dot Com is jay loox Hunt, and for good reason,
- 8:53Speaker 1: because Jay loox hunts a player that you look at
- 8:56Speaker 1: the jump that he made from year one to year two.
- 8:58Speaker 1: He played two hundred and forty one snaps rookie six
- 9:01Speaker 1: hundred and ninety three last season, and five and a half.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Sacks on the year.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Five of those sacks happened to come when Jay when
- 9:10Speaker 1: Phillips arrived, so from week ten onward. But this is
- 9:14Speaker 1: a player that when you watch him play, you can
- 9:16Speaker 1: see the refined approach when he's rushing. When he's rushing
- 9:21Speaker 1: the quarterback, he has a plan. He has a wider
- 9:25Speaker 1: array of pass rush moves to dive into and that
- 9:31Speaker 1: comes with reps, that comes with experience, that comes with
- 9:34Speaker 1: gaining knowledge and talking to other players. He's been part
- 9:38Speaker 1: of the Pass Rush Summit, which is an offseason event
- 9:41Speaker 1: kind of like tight End University, and jay Loox has
- 9:45Speaker 1: been a presence there. He added some muscle as well
- 9:48Speaker 1: last offseason and he made himself into a two way
- 9:51Speaker 1: player where he's a force against the run. Not quite
- 9:56Speaker 1: to the level of Nolan Smith, but he is really
- 9:58Speaker 1: capable in that capacity. But where I really notice him
- 10:01Speaker 1: is the burst, the athleticism, the twitchiness rushing and knowing
- 10:06Speaker 1: how to set up offensive linemen and not going into
- 10:11Speaker 1: it necessarily with an approach with a divine plan, being
- 10:17Speaker 1: willing to adjust and adapt on the fly.
- 10:20Speaker 2: And for a young player that it was widely.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Expected would take some time to acclimate to the NFL
- 10:25Speaker 1: coming out of Houston Christian just for years or so
- 10:30Speaker 1: ago he was a safety at Cornell.
- 10:33Speaker 2: He's developed at a rapid pace and to me, I.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Have a hard time envisioning anyone else but jay ooks
- 10:41Speaker 1: Hunt being the player who takes that second spot opposite
- 10:45Speaker 1: Grenard when the Eagles begin the regular season, because I
- 10:48Speaker 1: believe that much in the player he is my breakout
- 10:51Speaker 1: player on the defensive side, but they're not just going
- 10:55Speaker 1: to hand him the job, which is why it's going
- 10:57Speaker 1: to be interesting because you have two young players and
- 10:59Speaker 1: Nolan Smith and Jay looks Hunt that are vuying for
- 11:01Speaker 1: that opportunity and both have flashed in different ways. So
- 11:05Speaker 1: now it's going to be about who who is the
- 11:08Speaker 1: player who the Eagles feel most confident in to step
- 11:12Speaker 1: in in that spot and be able to contribute on
- 11:15Speaker 1: a weekend week out basis.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Hey, Philly fans, game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,
- 11:21Speaker 3: long lines, We've all been there, But when it comes
- 11:24Speaker 3: to your cannabis, Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is
- 11:28Speaker 3: the dispensary for sports fans, just minutes outside of Philly,
- 11:32Speaker 3: with plenty of free parking. You'll be in and out fast,

- 12:01Speaker 3: even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 12:06Speaker 3: service members, and healthcare pros. Cam din Apothecary top quality cannabis,
- 12:11Speaker 3: great prices, and an experience made for Philly fans twenty
- 12:15Speaker 3: one and up.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Then we'll look at the defensive tackle position, and you
- 12:22Speaker 1: know who the top three are. You have Jalen Carter,
- 12:26Speaker 1: Jordan Davis, Moro Jomo. But last season, let's not forget
- 12:31Speaker 1: that Byron Young who didn't play it all for the
- 12:34Speaker 1: Eagles the season prior after being claimed via waivers.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Before the season.
- 12:39Speaker 1: He stepped in in pretty big spots for the Eagles
- 12:43Speaker 1: last year when Jalen Carter was shelved for a few weeks.
- 12:46Speaker 1: He played seventy four snaps at two and a half sacks.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I like the effort that he plays with. He has
- 12:52Speaker 2: some juice.
- 12:52Speaker 1: He gives you some positional versatility if needed.
- 12:56Speaker 2: I don't know that he's.
- 12:58Speaker 1: The run defender that well, he's not the run defender
- 13:03Speaker 1: that Jayalen Carter, or really any of the Eagles defensive
- 13:07Speaker 1: tackles are, maybe outside of Moro Jomo, but I think
- 13:11Speaker 1: he's capable doing that and also getting after the quarterback.
- 13:15Speaker 1: But it seems, maybe most importantly that Vic Vangiel has
- 13:19Speaker 1: taken a liking to Byron Young calls him b why
- 13:23Speaker 1: they found a role for him last year, and it
- 13:25Speaker 1: is notable that he, when Jayalen Carter was not participating
- 13:29Speaker 1: in team drills, stepped in as the replacement for Jayalen
- 13:34Speaker 1: Carter with the first team. He's someone who was the
- 13:38Speaker 1: immediate benefactor when Jayalen Carter missed time, So the Eagles
- 13:42Speaker 1: seem to have some confidence in him. He's entering the
- 13:44Speaker 1: final year of his rookie deal, so expect a motivated
- 13:48Speaker 1: by going into it looking to make the most of
- 13:50Speaker 1: this opportunity here in Philadelphia, and I like his game
- 13:53Speaker 1: a little bit. I would argue that, and I talked
- 13:55Speaker 1: about this on this podcast, that he's one of the
- 13:58Speaker 1: more important depth pieces on this roster because Jayalen Carter's
- 14:03Speaker 1: had some shoulder injuries, and he's also played eighty four
- 14:07Speaker 1: percent of the defensive snaps the past two seasons. And
- 14:10Speaker 1: I would argue that the Eagles are over exerting and
- 14:14Speaker 1: leaning too much into the Jayalen Carter angle. And you
- 14:19Speaker 1: got to make sure that he's getting adequate rest. I
- 14:22Speaker 1: understand that the Eagles don't traditionally rotate a lot there,
- 14:25Speaker 1: but he's a young player, he's dominant. You want to
- 14:30Speaker 1: make sure that he's as fresh as possible, and you
- 14:32Speaker 1: have pieces that can help alleviate some.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Of that burden, notably Byron Young.
- 14:39Speaker 1: However, last summer, rookie Ty Robinson, he's now entering his
- 14:46Speaker 1: second season, was a.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Player that a lot of people were excited about.
- 14:50Speaker 1: He didn't offer a ton in training camp, had a
- 14:53Speaker 1: really quiet summer. You saw him in the preseason. It
- 14:56Speaker 1: looked like he still had some ways to go before
- 14:59Speaker 1: he got to a level that the Eagles would feel
- 15:01Speaker 1: confident working him into a rotation. And that's all fair,
- 15:05Speaker 1: and I saw it as well. I got questions as
- 15:07Speaker 1: to why I wasn't writing about him in my observations,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and it simply boils down to when he makes a play,
- 15:16Speaker 1: when he stands out in one on ones, I will,
- 15:19Speaker 1: but that never really came to fruition. However, he's coming
- 15:23Speaker 1: into this year after well one. He looks like he's
- 15:27Speaker 1: added some size, which is good, but he also was
- 15:31Speaker 1: in the building last year working with defensive line coach
- 15:33Speaker 1: Clint Hurt, And just because he played a lot of
- 15:36Speaker 1: snaps in college and was an older player when he
- 15:39Speaker 1: entered the league doesn't necessarily mean that he's going to
- 15:41Speaker 1: hit the ground running. Sometimes it takes a little while
- 15:44Speaker 1: for the light to come on, and maybe Ty Robinson
- 15:47Speaker 1: is that kind of player.
- 15:48Speaker 2: We'll have to see.
- 15:50Speaker 1: But he is someone that I'm sure the Eagles would
- 15:53Speaker 1: love nothing more than to see him make this leap
- 15:55Speaker 1: in year two. And I just mentioned Byron Young's contract,
- 15:59Speaker 1: He's on the final year of his rookie contract.
- 16:02Speaker 2: So is Moro Jomo.
- 16:04Speaker 1: All of a sudden, Ty Robinson could become an important
- 16:06Speaker 1: depth piece for the future for this team. For this team,
- 16:10Speaker 1: and you want to see him continue to progress. We'll
- 16:13Speaker 1: have to see, because last year it was evident that
- 16:16Speaker 1: he wasn't primed for a big defensive role and he
- 16:18Speaker 1: ended up being the fifth defensive tackle. This year, however,
- 16:22Speaker 1: I imagine that you're going to see a little bit
- 16:24Speaker 1: more of a refined and polished version of Ty Robinson,
- 16:28Speaker 1: so he could have something to say in that number
- 16:31Speaker 1: four defensive tackle spot if everyone's healthy. To be clear,
- 16:36Speaker 1: you're not going to see a lot of Byron Young
- 16:38Speaker 1: or Ty Robinson. But it is still a competition because
- 16:41Speaker 1: it's not like Byron Young's name should be written in
- 16:44Speaker 1: penn as number four on the depth chart. We have
- 16:47Speaker 1: to let things play out a little bit. I tend
- 16:49Speaker 1: to think that Byron Young has the upper hand. I
- 16:51Speaker 1: am a little bit more bullish on the player because
- 16:54Speaker 1: I liked him coming out of Alabama quite a bit,
- 16:57Speaker 1: and it seems like he settled into a really good
- 16:59Speaker 1: compliment and is starting to hit his stride a little bit.
- 17:02Speaker 1: But Ty Robinson is someone who you look at what
- 17:05Speaker 1: he can bring to the table. Potentially this is a
- 17:07Speaker 1: big summer for him, and I don't think.
- 17:09Speaker 2: He's going to go quietly.
- 17:11Speaker 1: He's probably not overly enthused with how his rookie season went,
- 17:16Speaker 1: and so I expect him to go out there with
- 17:18Speaker 1: the mindset of I'm going to remind everyone the player
- 17:22Speaker 1: that I am, and I'm going to make this decision
- 17:24Speaker 1: very difficult on the coaching staff, and I'm going to
- 17:27Speaker 1: try to fight for more playing time. So these are
- 17:31Speaker 1: just some of the position battles that I'm really going
- 17:34Speaker 1: to be keying in on. I could also look at
- 17:36Speaker 1: other players that are further down the depth chart as
- 17:38Speaker 1: far as vying for spots on the roster, But I
- 17:41Speaker 1: want to talk about the big ones, and those are
- 17:44Speaker 1: the more significant position battles. On the defensive side, this
- 17:48Speaker 1: is going to be one of the NFL's top defenses,
- 17:50Speaker 1: if not the top defense, because there's a lot of
- 17:53Speaker 1: continuity there. They have playmakers at all three levels. So
- 17:56Speaker 1: to have some of these position battles with players that
- 18:00Speaker 1: are going to whether they win this spot or not,
- 18:03Speaker 1: the starting spots or not. We're in the case of
- 18:06Speaker 1: the defensive tackle position, if they are able to step
- 18:10Speaker 1: into that depth depth role, they're going to play, and
- 18:14Speaker 1: the Eagles are going to more often than not need
- 18:17Speaker 1: these players in the case of Michael Carter the second
- 18:20Speaker 1: if he doesn't stave off or be able to wrestle
- 18:23Speaker 1: the job away from Marcus Epps, or in the case
- 18:26Speaker 1: of Nolan Smith if he's not able to leap Jaloks Hunt.
- 18:32Speaker 1: I mean, these are going to still be players that
- 18:34Speaker 1: the Eagles need to rely on this season, and depth
- 18:38Speaker 1: is going to be hugely important. But those are the
- 18:41Speaker 1: positions that I'm looking at in terms of just high
- 18:44Speaker 1: leverage spots and who has the most to gain from that.
