- 0:08Hour number two, Millery Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:11Network, about 15 minutes away from first pitch, Game 5,
- 0:15Brewers and the Cubs. Cubs have won the last three
- 0:19games. We'll get to the Cubbies in a
- 0:21second. Capra, good to talk to you,
- 0:23brother. How are you first of all?
- 0:24I'm good, I'm good. I'm headed to Denver, Co
- 0:28Actually getting into an Uber right now to fly from Go to
- 0:33O'Hare family reunion in Denver. 21 of us, nice.
- 0:37My kids are coming. It's to be super cool.
- 0:39And then we're seeing the Goo Goo Dolls at Red Rocks.
- 0:41Have you been to Red Rocks before?
- 0:43Never, and I hear it's on our bucket.
- 0:45List. Yeah.
- 0:45You'll be so glad you were there.
- 0:47It's spectacular. It really is.
- 0:49That's what I heard. No, it is.
- 0:50It's all true. You know, before we get to the
- 0:52Cubs and the bears. Just the breaking news from this
- 0:54morning, man, they ran. Pat Fitzgerald won't.
- 0:56That's not a good look. Obviously, the lawsuit settled.
- 0:59I get it's bear season, it's Cub season, so maybe Northwestern
- 1:03doesn't move the needle, but but boy oh boy, that's a bad look
- 1:08for Northwestern. Oh, horrible.
- 1:10And I guarantee you he got paid big time because I think the
- 1:15lawsuit, you could check the numbers online, but I think the
- 1:19lawsuit was 140 million. And that's what yeah, with
- 1:24damages and everything. Because that guy, I have a good
- 1:28friend whose son played for 5th and I was with him one night.
- 1:32I ran into him at a restaurant. I still may ask you a question.
- 1:35If you had a son, would you let him play for Northwestern?
- 1:39For Pat? He said seven days a week and
- 1:42twice, twice on Sunday. It's the most ridiculous thing
- 1:45he's ever seen. And he was on those teams.
- 1:48So I love Fitz. I'm a huge Pat Fitzgerald guy.
- 1:51And his son now at the University of Iowa, which is
- 1:53incredibly weird because when he got taken out of that Rose Bowl
- 1:56year, it was Iowa. He thought it was a dirty play.
- 1:59And yet here he is. And maybe be the heir apparent
- 2:01to Kirk Ferrets. Maybe something to file away for
- 2:04another day. Let's keep on the football theme
- 2:06because Cap, I told Ken on Monday I was ready.
- 2:09I was sold a bill of goods again on the quarterback position by
- 2:12him. He sold me and it wasn't going
- 2:14to work. And then I saw Sunday night and
- 2:16Caleb Williams look like completely a different guy.
- 2:19How much did the tenor change after, at minimum, a very
- 2:22inconsistent camp for Caleb Williams and what you guys
- 2:26walked into Sunday night into Monday morning?
- 2:29OK. I'm not coming down on you,
- 2:30Trent, but I'm going to ask you a question.
- 2:32Yes, When you say an inconsistent camp for Caleb
- 2:36Williams, where are you getting that from?
- 2:38From reports from the people that are there for media members
- 2:41that were there a lot of off script plays, a lot of it was
- 2:45the penalties more than anything where 6 fall starts and those
- 2:48kind of things where that's not the consistency you're hoping
- 2:51for out of your quarterback. OK, so a lot of the narrative
- 2:56that's coming out about Caleb in camp are from people like my
- 3:01friend Chris Canty, who have been at exactly 0 practice.
- 3:05Now, has he had some up and down moments?
- 3:08Yeah, I guess we could say that as they learn a new offense.
- 3:11But that's what practice is. You're learning to do things and
- 3:15you're going to fail and practice.
- 3:16But Caleb Williams has had some sensational moments.
- 3:20And I did a long 40 minute interview with Kevin Byard on
- 3:24Tuesday night because he works on our channel.
- 3:26So his first show of the year, we intercepted him instead of
- 3:30him. His show is called Intercepted.
- 3:31He's the, I think the fourth or third leading interceptor right
- 3:34now in the National Football value of active players.
- 3:37And so we sat and talked before we went on the air, after we
- 3:40went on the air and a 40 minute on the air, which is on our
- 3:43channel right now. It's a great watch.
- 3:45And he said you guys have no idea how good Caleb's looking.
- 3:49He said, I don't know where this national narrative is.
- 3:52You know, my friend Chris Canty said I wouldn't be shocked if
- 3:55he's the 6th best quarterback drafted in that class.
- 3:58And then all these different people who have seen exactly
- 4:01combined 0 practices and you saw what he did the other night
- 4:07against Buffalo. And I don't care if that was the
- 4:09first team, the second team, guys who work at UPS.
- 4:13That dude was dialed in and he's had a good week of practice and
- 4:18we'll find out what he does tomorrow night against the
- 4:19Kansas City Chiefs. But he's been better than he's
- 4:22getting credit for. Maybe the the news that I think
- 4:26resonated throughout Bears Kingdom, if you call it that,
- 4:29whatever they call it yesterday was Tyson Baigen's extension and
- 4:33his reaction to getting paid and what it meant to his family.
- 4:38Cap a lot of positive, I guess X or Twitter if you want to call
- 4:42social media. Just people may be realizing for
- 4:45the first time who Tyson Baigent is and obviously got rewarded in
- 4:49what it means to him to get that contract.
- 4:52Yeah, it was super cool. I was texting with his dad
- 4:55today. His dad, Travis is the world Arm
- 4:57Wrestling champion and he has got a big personality just like
- 5:02his son does. Tyson, I've gotten to know him
- 5:06pretty well because he's come over and done a show at my
- 5:09YouTube studio and I asked him back then, this is got to be two
- 5:13months ago. He was doing an offseason
- 5:15football camp for kids and he wanted to promote it.
- 5:18So we came in and did a whole bunch of stuff with us and I
- 5:21said, let me ask you a question. If they offered you an
- 5:24extension, would you take it? He said first I want to make it
- 5:27clear, I think I can be a starter in this league and I
- 5:29think I can be a really good football player in this league.
- 5:31But I also want to learn from this guy Ben Johnson.
- 5:35So yes, if they offered me that, he goes, you're talking to a guy
- 5:39who came from nothing. His dad did not have running
- 5:42water till he was a 9th grader, no running water.
- 5:46And he said, where I come from in West Virginia, nobody has any
- 5:49money. They just exist and you're going
- 5:53to give him 10 million guaranteed dollars?
- 5:56Yeah, it was super cool to see his emotions.
- 5:59The Bears went out and fixed the interior their offensive line.
- 6:02It was a necessity after the disaster a year ago, but they're
- 6:05still young out at the tackle positions.
- 6:08As good as you can feel about those middle three guys and I
- 6:10think it's going to be elite. Where are we with the tackle
- 6:13positions of the young guy, particularly with Braxton Jones
- 6:16out on the left side of their his importance obviously to this
- 6:19offensive line. Where are you with this group
- 6:21after we get to the tackles? Yeah, you're right.
- 6:25The interior looks really good. Drew Dallman, Joe Tooney and
- 6:29Jonah Jackson, if they stay healthy, that's as good an
- 6:31interior group as there is in the National Football League.
- 6:34But you know, you're paying through the nose for it, too.
- 6:36It better be, you know, you're paying Joe Tooney big money.
- 6:39You extended him. You extended Jonah Jackson.
- 6:42He's getting big money. And Drew Dallman got a huge
- 6:45contract to leave the Atlanta Falcons.
- 6:47So those three guys better play at that level if healthy.
- 6:51I think this is a big, big year for Darnell Wright.
- 6:54I love the offensive line coach Danny Rocher, who was at
- 6:58Northern Illinois after I coached there.
- 7:01But I got to know him because we're both Huskies at heart.
- 7:04And I talked to him and he's he's just very honest to the
- 7:07media, to the player. Yeah, that wasn't good enough.
- 7:11I love what you did here. That's not good enough.
- 7:14And he'll tell the player and then he'll tell the media.
- 7:16He will call the player out, and I love that.
- 7:19And then at the other tackle, it's Braxton Jones.
- 7:22Now Darnell Wright was the 10th pick in the first round, so you
- 7:26expect him to play at a Pro Bowl level.
- 7:28Braxton Jones was a fifth round draft pick who's coming off
- 7:31ankle surgery, so we'll see what we get.
- 7:34I think he's going to be the opening night starter though
- 7:36all. Right, Cap, let's get to the
- 7:37Cubs. Kyle Tucker back in the lineup
- 7:39today. Revelation that he does did have
- 7:42a fracture or something in in one of his fingers that
- 7:46potentially was one of the reasons he's just been so awful
- 7:49as as of late. But that aside, Owen, Casey been
- 7:52good. He's on the bench today.
- 7:54Matt Shaw has been unbelievable. He's not going to play today.
- 7:57Council pinch hits Justin Turner for O and Casey a couple of
- 8:00nights ago. I didn't understand that move
- 8:03after the day Casey had had and of course, Turner filed.
- 8:07I think you lined out the second base.
- 8:09Anyways. Regardless, it didn't work out.
- 8:11Great counsel. Is he worth the money?
- 8:15Look, I don't know if any manager moves the needle at that
- 8:18level at 8 million a year for five years.
- 8:22I'm not telling you he's not a smart, good baseball man.
- 8:25For me to say that would be just stupid.
- 8:28Do I think he's overrated? Yes, I do.
- 8:31I think he's he's fine. He's a manager.
- 8:34I do not understand why you're sitting Matt Shaw today.
- 8:37Now, their analytics may tell them something different.
- 8:41They may know something that we don't.
- 8:43All I know is Matt Shaw had a big game last night.
- 8:46He First of all, that guy runs hard like the.
- 8:49Rd. Brand love it.
- 8:51He made a play on a little chopper, a little rolling bunt
- 8:55and gunned the guy out. And I picked by Michael Bush at
- 8:571st and then he hit a big home run, which turned out to be the
- 9:00difference in the ball game. So I'm a huge match off.
- 9:04And why he's not in the lineup, I don't know.
- 9:07Owen Casey, I would have sat Tucker until tomorrow.
- 9:10I would have said you're not playing, get on the plane
- 9:13tonight's California, catch your breath and then you'll be in the
- 9:16lineup Friday night. I don't understand why Owen
- 9:19Casey's not in the lineup. As far as pinch hitting the
- 9:23other day, I'm against you on that one.
- 9:26Ashby, the lefty coming in is a crossfire guy who throws 99
- 9:32miles an hour lefty on lefty. I don't think I'm putting on
- 9:36Casey in the best possible position there.
- 9:40It was a righty different story. And then if I have Justin Turner
- 9:45on my team and he hasn't had the best year for sure, but he's a
- 9:48great leader in that room and he's going to be there, I got to
- 9:52use them. I mean, that's the situation
- 9:54that I signed him for Lefty on righty.
- 9:56I'm going to take a shot. It worked couple Sundays ago
- 9:59when he hit a game-winning walk off home run.
- 10:01It didn't work this time. Ashley stuff, he's really good
- 10:05reliever, really good. So I didn't have a problem with
- 10:08that one because I understood the crossfire.
- 10:11Lefty lefty rookie veteran so I was cool with that I would have
- 10:16had Owen Casey in the lineup today.
- 10:18What I want to know is remember the movie a few good men.
- 10:22I want to know who did the code red on Craig Counsel because
- 10:26Sunday you can find the tape, you could play it on your show,
- 10:30he said. Owen, someone said why is Owen
- 10:32not in the lineup Friday, Saturday and Sunday against
- 10:36three right-handed starters for the Pirates?
- 10:38Look, I'm going to play the best guys and he's going to have to
- 10:41understand that. That's why we wrestled with
- 10:43bringing them up and I'm playing my best guys.
- 10:46Tucker Hap and Crow Armstrong. 24 hours later, Owen Casey is
- 10:53starting both games of a doubleheader.
- 10:56He said in his first career home run, he drives in four on the
- 10:59day, three in game one and the home run in Game 2.
- 11:03And Kyle Tucker's out for days. DAYS, plural, according to
- 11:08Craig. Somebody got to that dude.
- 11:10Somebody did a code red. And I don't know if it was Jed.
- 11:13I don't know if missus counsel when he came home said you look
- 11:17lifeless what's going on here? Because his pregame make
- 11:21availability on Monday before game one of the doubleheader.
- 11:25Go watch that and tell me that's the same guy.
- 11:28The Game 5 minutes away from first pitch.
- 11:32I hate to overstate a regular season game, but after the three
- 11:35consecutive wins, you make it four in a row, you get it.
- 11:38The difference between 5:00 and 7:00, it just, it feels massive
- 11:42to me. Is it overstating a cap that
- 11:44this is? If they're going to chase them
- 11:46down, today is a must win to get it done, to get this thing back
- 11:51within 5. Yeah, I'll never use the term
- 11:55must win unless you're eliminated if you don't win.
- 11:59But I'm with you, Trent. It's a massive game because you
- 12:03win today, you send them home only 5 up and all of a sudden
- 12:09you have won four in a row over the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 12:15You've already got the tiebreak, you already have that.
- 12:18Yesterday did that, winning the series.
- 12:20But you also, they lost on Sunday to the Reds.
- 12:24They won on Monday. They would have lost four
- 12:26straight to us and five of six. So all of a sudden, they're not
- 12:31the invincible Brewers. They're a good team.
- 12:34I love their manager. But guess what?
- 12:37The Cubs are a good team, too. And so if they can find a way to
- 12:41win my mantra, you know that grab a cup of coffee, find a way
- 12:44to win a baseball game. That's it.
- 12:46I don't care how you do it. Find a way to get on your jet to
- 12:50LA to play the Angels tomorrow night, five games back.
- 12:54Capo, where are you in Palencia? Does look maybe like, I don't
- 12:57know if it's fatigue, the wheels coming off.
- 12:59He's not as dominant as he's he got the job done last night,
- 13:02thankfully. Nico Horner what what a play in
- 13:04second base. But Palensi's kind of been, I
- 13:07don't want to say Rod Beck, like, but kind of get her on
- 13:10fire lately. Yeah, he has.
- 13:15Now you go back and look at his game log.
- 13:17He pitched on August 6th, didn't make an appearance again on
- 13:20August 13th, so I'm not sure if there's something barking in his
- 13:24body somewhere. Then they said he was sick so he
- 13:28missed a little bit of time but his velocity.
- 13:31Last night I was watching the game of my father-in-law and I'm
- 13:33like this dudes throwing one O 2.
- 13:35So if you're throwing one O 2, you're healthy.
- 13:40So we'll see. Maybe it's pitch mix, I don't
- 13:43know, but we'll see. I, I, I do like him.
- 13:47Last night, I think is a game that has to pump him full of
- 13:51confidence that he was able somehow to navigate that.
- 13:55Taking a look at the remaining schedule and there's a lot of
- 13:57different ways that you can measure it, But the measurement
- 13:59that I'm looking for right now is the Cubs only have two series
- 14:03left after today's game against teams that even are above 504
- 14:07games against the Reds, three against the Mets and that is in
- 14:11Milwaukee. On the other hand, still has a
- 14:13series with Philly and with Toronto and with San Diego and
- 14:17with the Reds. It feels like advantage.
- 14:19Cubs here. Again, back to kind of the
- 14:21original point here, but that remaining schedule, do you get
- 14:24into schedules for baseball cap? And certainly when we're getting
- 14:26down here to the final five weeks or so of the season, is it
- 14:29something that you believe is important or as a baseball and
- 14:32anybody can win on any given day?
- 14:35I think it's a combination of both, Trent.
- 14:37I think it's anybody can win on any given day because Major
- 14:40League pitchers can beat Major League hitters.
- 14:43I don't care. The White Sox were the worst
- 14:45team in the history of the sport last year.
- 14:47They still found a way to win 41 times.
- 14:49And I remember they beat the Yankees.
- 14:51And I went how in the like, if you're a gambler and I like to
- 14:55gamble on baseball, you're gambling.
- 14:58You're like, OK, how did the Chicago White Sox win that game?
- 15:02How did the Colorado rock three in a row?
- 15:06And they're a horrific team this year.
- 15:09So yes, anyone could beat anyone on any given day.
- 15:13The Cubs have the second easiest schedule remaining.
- 15:16San Diego has the easiest. The Brewers have the 10th
- 15:19hardest schedule remaining. So if you win the day, you find
- 15:24a way to win a baseball game, all of a sudden you're 5 back
- 15:27and they still got to play those series you mentioned with the
- 15:30Padres and the Phillies and the Blue Jays and the Reds.
- 15:34They're done with the Cubs. You can run them down 100%.
- 15:39Will they? That's going to be a great bit
- 15:41of theatre. Your hours changed this week,
- 15:43capital. You've got news that's going to
- 15:45happen early September 6 tonight.
- 15:46Not like you're up, right? I mean, I'm already up, so it's
- 15:51not going to be a big change in my life.
- 15:55But you know, yes, they called us into this emergency meeting.
- 16:00Hey, so here's what's going on. They have put out the press
- 16:02release, the whole deal. So we're 6:00 to 9:00 in the
- 16:05morning. So we'll just, the only change
- 16:07we'll make is instead of meeting, we always have a
- 16:10meeting at 6:15, 6/30 when everyone's in.
- 16:13We're going to do our meeting the night before.
- 16:15That's it. We'll be ready to roll, get in
- 16:18the car, grab my coffee and find a way to do a radio show.
- 16:22Have fun in the Mile High City cap.
- 16:24We'll talk to you next Wednesday.
- 16:25Thanks for jumping on buddy. I look forward to it boys.
- 16:27Have a wonderful weekend. You do the same.

- 17:15Thank you for that. So I'm looking at tankathon.com.
- 17:19That is where the schedule breakdown is for strength to
- 17:22schedule the rest of the way. Cubs have the second easiest
- 17:25schedule of playoff. Teams period, period, period.
- 17:30In Major League Baseball remaining this is just strictly
- 17:32by what your opponent's win percentages.
- 17:35The only team below them are the Padres, and the reason it's
- 17:39because they have seven games left with the Rockies.
- 17:41Yeah, because even then. Taken two or three of the
- 17:44Dodgers. The Cubs have two series left
- 17:47against teams 500. Better.
- 17:48I mean, ridiculous, right? What do they finish?
- 17:51What? What's their finishing stretch?
- 17:53Do you have it? I can get it if you don't.
- 17:55I can get it up here because the the Padres still have three with
- 17:59Milwaukee, three with the Dodgers, three with the Mets,
- 18:02three with the Mariners and three with the Reds.
- 18:06I understand the seven against the Rockies.
- 18:07Still, I think the Cubs doesn't take a whole lot to say they
- 18:11have the easiest schedule remaining.
- 18:14Are you with me? The difference between.
- 18:15So you think that they that the Cubs are still?
- 18:18If they win today, yes, I believe five.
- 18:22With that schedule compared to what Milwaukee has, they still
- 18:27got the Phillies, the Blue Jays, the Padres, the Reds.
- 18:31So when will the Cubs see a team, a playoff team again?
- 18:34Not till Cincinnati on the 18th of of September and that's back.
- 18:40And they're a team on the outside looking in.
- 18:42Right now they are, yeah. They got beat last night.
- 18:44Is he November the Mets at the end of the year and is that?
- 18:47Finishing with Saint Louis. One of those two teams might be
- 18:50out of it, might have played themselves out.
- 18:51For sure. We look a month forward.
- 18:53And I don't think they play Tampa, but I don't think Tampa's
- 18:55got enough to get back into it. OK.
- 19:00Yeah, this thing's not over, but I think today.
- 19:03Well, these last three games have obviously they've put them
- 19:07back in at least position. And we come in Tuesday after the
- 19:09rain out Monday night, and that was the best news.
- 19:12They got rained at beat 7UP then earlier.
- 19:14That day and they look lifeless. Kate Horton got hurt.
- 19:16It was awful. And then they squeak one out and
- 19:20they get another. And then they do it last night
- 19:22and all of a sudden. Meet Mizuroski.
- 19:26What's going on with him? Fatigue.
- 19:30I think I think you're right. That's what I saw.
- 19:33I thought it's a guy that is trying to be too fine and he was
- 19:38wild. He's that's, that's been the
- 19:40story of his career, even coming up through the minors.
- 19:43He was. Bad.
- 19:46For a couple of stretches and the other side, Colin Ray, Colin
- 19:51Ray, he got out of it right. Trying He's 10:00 and 5:00.
- 19:54That's ridiculous. Colin Ray.
- 19:56Yes. 10:00 and 5:00 and they put they did set him up for the 6th
- 20:00inning so. I think maybe I got one out in
- 20:02the six. But anyways, regardless of that,
- 20:05unbelievable, unbelievable. The Cubs have not named their
- 20:08starter tomorrow night. They've named Kate Horton on
- 20:11Thursday or on Saturday, rather, to go in Game 2 of that Angel
- 20:14series. I thought he had a blister.
- 20:16What? Isn't that why he left the game
- 20:18the other night? Was that what it was?
- 20:19I don't. Remember, it was a finger they
- 20:20were looking at. I just assumed blister.
- 20:23Well, we'll see. We'll take a time out.
- 20:25I want to. This Northwestern story drives
- 20:30me crazy. Yeah, I mean, they just
- 20:33completely ruined his. That's his school.
- 20:36He's the face of that program, no doubt.
- 20:39Right? Yes.
- 20:41No offense. What's the guy's name?
- 20:42David Braun. It was a great story, year one.
- 20:44I mean, taking that team and what they did with it, but for
- 20:47them to and apparently it was the student newspaper that was
- 20:51the ones that were spreading what these falsehoods and and
- 20:57painting Fitzgerald as he knew about the hazing that was going
- 21:01on and he encouraged it and and looked the other way and it was
- 21:05under his watch and he knew and then it comes out he didn't know
- 21:08Jack. He took them.
- 21:12Places that been Trent, he did it.
- 21:15As a player, he. Did it as a player in the late
- 21:1790s and then as a coach. This was a laughingstock.
- 21:20And what is it again? A laughingstock with a better
- 21:23building, yes, right. But unbelievable how they just
- 21:27And now he's getting paid. What did Cappy say?
- 21:29He sued for 125 million. So he didn't get that.
- 21:32Much. You wouldn't think so.
- 21:33But he got 10s of you said something interesting.
- 21:39Did you see it? What?
- 21:42No, you said something interesting.
- 21:43Could I see it? Could you see?
- 21:45Yes, Kirk. Yes, they have a successful
- 21:47year. Yes, he rides off.
- 21:49Into the sunset. I don't know about this year.
- 21:50I don't. Know when he's going to retire?
- 21:53I don't either. You say this year you could say
- 21:555. Years I could see, yes, yeah.
- 21:59And. How would that go over?
- 22:02I think in general the fan base would.
- 22:04Love to enthusiastic thumbs up is how I see it.
- 22:08He had them ranked. He took them to bowl games, to
- 22:12conference championships. Players got to love playing for
- 22:16him. Oh.
- 22:16Absolutely, there's a lot. And to do.
- 22:19Yet he hates Iowa so much. Or at least that was the
- 22:22narrative. You could tell him and Kirk
- 22:24respect each other. He wouldn't be sending his son
- 22:26to Iowa if there wasn't that kind of respect.
- 22:29Chad Deal I believe was the offensive lineman that cut him.
- 22:33Memory serves. It left the bad taste.
- 22:37I get it. It should, absolutely.
- 22:39But it was also, you remember what Barnett was pushing at that
- 22:42time, right? Beat Hayden Fry and beat Iowa.
- 22:45That's because they weren't looking at Michigan and Ohio
- 22:48State. They were looking at Iowa.
- 22:50That is something attainable. We can do that.
- 22:52We can't beat them because we don't have the money of them,
- 22:54right? We don't cheat like them.
- 22:55We can't beat them. But what we can be is we can be
- 22:58Iowa. And then they did it.
- 23:00And then when you get injured against that team, you can
- 23:03understand why there was a bad taste.
- 23:04Without a doubt but. There are going to be jobs open.
- 23:07There might be 1 N of Chicago and Wisconsin.
- 23:12I don't want to see that one. No.
- 23:14No, no, no. Because I'm, I'm sure he wants
- 23:16to coach again, despite the fact that, I mean, I don't know how
- 23:19much he he had to, he broke the bank on this thing.
- 23:22First to come out there was all made-up.
- 23:25And that Northwestern, I mean, they got, I mean, they did him
- 23:28wrong. I get it.
- 23:30I mean, you hear that all the time, right?
- 23:31When there's two sides and the person that's guilty, it wasn't
- 23:36his fault. And it turns out that, yeah, it
- 23:37was. This was one that completely
- 23:40different. But could he be the heir
- 23:43apparent at the University of. We'll see.
- 23:46All right. We'll take a time out.
- 23:48We'll come back. Continue on here.
- 23:50Trent's plays of the day, circus sports, we'll sponsor those.
- 23:54Trent coming off an O and two yesterday, so tries to get back
- 23:57on the positive side of the Ledger.
- 24:00Miller and Condon continuing on here, you're listening to Des
- 24:03Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX&O.
- 24:12Miller and Condon, welcome back to the Iowa Sports Radio
- 24:15Network. Trent and I with you until just
- 24:16before the top of the hour, coming up at 2:00 off the bench.
- 24:22Lucas and Sean, by the way, it's 6:00 tonight.
- 24:24Travis Hines from Dublin, Eugene Repay from wherever he is in
- 24:29central Iowa, he will. Those guys will be part of
- 24:33Cyclone Insider. It goes tonight at 6:00.
- 24:35So Cyclone Insider back for another season.
- 24:38Just got this note sent to me. The Brewers are 14 and O and
- 24:43they're in Priester's last 14 starts.
- 24:45Wow. How about that every his last 14
- 24:48games he started they've won. Now he's won them all.
- 24:51But the team is plays pretty well behind them.
- 24:53It is zip zip as they're playing in the top of the second inning.
- 24:58The Brew Crew has a man on Menaga against Priester.
- 25:02I'm at the Cubs this afternoon. You are.
- 25:04Yeah, laid the -136 now after I saw I heard that one. 14 The
- 25:11last 14 there come out victorious when he starts.
- 25:14Got a couple more plays coming up a little bit later on back to
- 25:20Pat Fitzgerald. Yep.
- 25:22So as we were going to break, there's a tweet put up by his
- 25:26son, and in that tweet he just had a little color splash the
- 25:31squares, black and gold. Imagine that.
- 25:36It is a quote tweet of him with his dad and the announcement of
- 25:40what came down. I look, I don't know if there's
- 25:45any smoke at all. Maybe we're just trying to see
- 25:47smoke, right? I don't know.
- 25:50I mean, nobody's pushing ferns out.
- 25:51I I don't think I don't want to take that their take away from
- 25:55this little dissertation that we're on right now.
- 25:57But I like it on the surface. I mean, there's going to come a
- 26:00time, is there? Well, I think.
- 26:05Are we sure? Well, not really, right, But
- 26:08there's going to come a time and and you mean, obviously you got
- 26:10to have that that little list in her drawer somewhere, potential
- 26:16coaches and who's on it. All right, this isn't the story
- 26:19for this week, but it's going to be a story that dominates next
- 26:22week. And and it absolutely deserves
- 26:24to be. So.
- 26:25In fact, the the hype may start on Friday night with a special
- 26:28on ESPN, Lee Corso, his final week next week.
- 26:31And there's a really good article if you subscribe to The
- 26:34Athletic about some of his former colleagues.
- 26:36I did not realize Tim Brando was part of Game Day.
- 26:39Did. You know that way.
- 26:40Back in the day, like maybe like the first days, yeah, that's
- 26:42what it was. I didn't remember that.
- 26:44Mm hmm. That he was part of it.
- 26:45But they talked to the Bear. They talked, obviously the
- 26:48current group, David Pollock, just some of the Maria Taylor
- 26:53when she was part of it, some of just their stories about coach,
- 26:57Coach Corso. And I think people are right
- 27:01when they and 'cause I don't think that they're blowing this
- 27:03out of proportion when a number of folks believe in part in
- 27:08part, that the popularity of college football, It can't be.
- 27:15It's not that it can be traced, but he certainly enhanced
- 27:19college football, the brand that it is, in part because of the
- 27:22headgear, in part just how crazy he was in that whole show.
- 27:25You I think would be a good test case for this because the way
- 27:30that I remember it as a kid, it was so regionalized and it still
- 27:34is to a certain extent. I mean, more than any other
- 27:37major sport that we think of, and regionality is still an
- 27:40important part. But because of that, I just
- 27:43always had the thought in my mind, taking away, you know,
- 27:47Iowa and the local connections and those kind of things, that
- 27:50it was just this little niche for every kind of part of the
- 27:53country. The Northeast didn't care at
- 27:55all. I mean, in a certain extent,
- 27:58that's still the case. The Southeast, it was different.
- 28:02The SEC, if we think of today, that was not the case for a
- 28:06long, long stretch. It was looked at at times poorly
- 28:11and now we come to this and I think a huge part of that is Lee
- 28:14Corso a building it to a national.
- 28:16Brand I I totally agree. Let let me stop on on on the SEC
- 28:20and I don't disagree with what you're saying is, is the fact
- 28:23that it was kind of big 10 PAC 10 dominant for one reason,
- 28:28January 1st, right? And and everybody knew it and it
- 28:32was appointment TV and the girls were watching the parade before
- 28:35the game. It it just seems from where I
- 28:37come from, right, that was the one kind of quote, national game
- 28:41of the year. And people paid attention to,
- 28:43yeah, the coastal part of it, component to it, the people from
- 28:46the upper Midwest making. Yeah.
- 28:48Because going from Knoxville, TN down to Florida, Yeah.
- 28:52OK, right. But you're coming from Michigan,
- 28:54right. And going to LA on January 1st.
- 28:57And it also elevated what it was and, and we don't know in the
- 29:01grand scheme of things what it looked like.
- 29:02But also look at the SEC back then in terms of simple things
- 29:05like NFL draft picks. It was different for Big 10.
- 29:08For a long time, it was the Big 10 that was kind of the gold
- 29:10standard when it came to that and, and the way that they've
- 29:13elevated themselves. But Lee Corso is a huge part of
- 29:17that, of making it from this hockey underdog to what it is
- 29:20today. It is the second most popular
- 29:22sport in America with all the goofiness, all the stupidity and
- 29:27what this dumb sport makes us love.
- 29:30The NFL is number 1, and college football is more than the NBA.
- 29:34Yeah, more than Major League. And it's.
- 29:35Closing the gap on the NFLI mean people will tell you that.
- 29:39And the people that I listen to when it comes to that are people
- 29:41that work in Las Vegas. That Saturday was in a lot of
- 29:43ways, just like another day. Yeah, but Sunday was it, right?
- 29:47But now it's not the case. I mean, Saturday's a big, big
- 29:49day in LV at books around the country.
- 29:53Good stuff. All right, Trench plays of the
- 29:55day. They're coming up.
- 29:56It's a light day of baseball here tonight.
- 29:58It is. There's a couple of NFL games.
- 30:01I, I, I'll tell you what I'm going to do.
- 30:02I'm going to because I'm not going to get into Yanks socks.
- 30:06I don't think. I don't think.
- 30:08It's down at the top of your list.
- 30:09No, I don't think it is. And the NFL games, it's Week 3.
- 30:12I don't think we're going to see too much of anybody.
- 30:15So I think I'll just get back into America's team.
- 30:18You're going to try and get as many in as I can.
- 30:20You're going to love the next two episodes.
- 30:22Well, I love the. 1st 2 It's incredible.
- 30:27I am excited and I'm the same thing.
- 30:29And we got a super busy day. We got back to school night
- 30:31tonight, meeting the teachers. We got softball practice, but
- 30:34I'm already counting down the hours until all the kids are in
- 30:36bed. So let me stop you about meet
- 30:38the teachers. Yes, when you were a.
- 30:39Kid were your was that the thing for your parents to?
- 30:42We never had. I don't remember that at all.
- 30:44I don't either. Now, I'm also from a small town.
- 30:47And you knew all the teachers for the most part.
- 30:49Maybe that was a part of it. Yeah.
- 30:51But no, we didn't have any. We didn't have any.
- 30:53We would. Go to the front of the school
- 30:57and taped on the window on the inside was teacher's name and
- 31:03the class. Yeah, and that's how we would
- 31:06find out. But there was no such thing as
- 31:09meet the teacher's name. No, none of that.
- 31:11We. I remember knowing before him
- 31:13before school started, but how that was done again, we didn't
- 31:17have Internet in the 80s, I don't know.
- 31:19Or the 60s did. Did they mail maybe a letter
- 31:23that had your teacher? We would.
- 31:24Find out by riding our bikes to the school and looking at the
- 31:27window of the front doors of the school.
- 31:29That's how we found. Out I still vividly so.
- 31:32Jack will be starting Kindergarten Monday.
- 31:34And here we are 40 years later. I vividly remember August of
- 31:391985, my first day of kindergarten.
- 31:43You do. Vividly I get on the bus.
- 31:46I lived in a little town by Osage of 40 people.
- 31:49My friend Jackie Grimm she told me sit down next to me.
- 31:52OK no clue. We go we get to school, she
- 31:56pushes me on the swing for like 3 minutes before the bell rings.
- 31:58Jackie. Had a crush on you?
- 32:00Jackie was great. Jackie's still a great person.
- 32:02I love Jackie, she was one of my favorite people and still is
- 32:05growing up. And she was a year older than me
- 32:08though, so she walks in. We didn't even, we weren't in
- 32:11the school we were in. Do you remember these things
- 32:14that they used to have? There are these side buildings
- 32:16that weren't part of the school. It was like put up my 2 by fours
- 32:20and a couple of pieces of plywood.
- 32:21That's where kindergarten was with Missus Hendrickson.
- 32:23But I still vividly remember that all year round.
- 32:26That's where we were. So we went to lunch or went to
- 32:30the library or went to gym class.
- 32:33We had to walk from this outside little building right inside.
- 32:37That school's no longer around, I bet.
- 32:39I think it was condemned. I.
- 32:40Guess wild All right, take your time out trench plays of the day
- 32:43are coming up next. So there is NFL, is there WNBA?
- 32:47I had not got there. I do have a preseason play that
- 32:51I really like. It's the same kind of handicap
- 32:53that I had on Monday. So there's one there.
- 32:55There is some WNBA tonight. When?
- 32:57Was the last time you watched the WNBA game that you didn't
- 33:00bet on? Well.
- 33:03Well, Caitlin's been out like 14.
- 33:04Games. It's unbelievable.
- 33:06Talk about out of sight, out of mind.
- 33:07Apparently the television numbers are still decent.
- 33:11Could have fooled me because. I saw Becker's had a monster
- 33:13night at 44 or something, Right? Rookie record there, but it does
- 33:17not happen. Maybe that's why we're watching
- 33:20so many documentaries. That's a good point 'cause last
- 33:21summer we were not. We were locked and loaded.
- 33:23Yup. What a disappointing year for
- 33:26this Indiana franchise, the WNBA.
- 33:28Oh my God. Well, take your time out.
- 33:30Trench plays of the day there next.
- 33:32Miller and Condon talking sports with you.
- 33:33Thanks for being with us, the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:36Miller and Condon, welcome back. Final LESS segment here on a
- 33:39Thursday tomorrow a football Friday.
- 33:46How about that Bama Bob's going to join us.
- 33:48Mike Palm will join us. Kay, Kurt, Heather live from
- 33:53Dublin. So the pep rally is going on
- 33:56when we start the show about noon hour time.
- 33:59So she's going to go to that and then she'll join us about 1:30.
- 34:03Mitch will be with us. I think this is I shouldn't say
- 34:06that, his final week of daily training camp reports.
- 34:10We'll find out. Anyways, be grateful for the
- 34:12Holtis to join us all season long, but got a couple of games
- 34:16to opine on. Tomorrow we will do that.
- 34:20Point spreads 3. Totals 49.
- 34:24Possum. Muddy line.
- 34:26That's what you're going to do. You know what if you, if you
- 34:29like a side, you may as well, right?
- 34:31Even though I think it's going to be a tight game if it is a
- 34:35blowout. Iowa State.
- 34:37You think so? They've done it.
- 34:39Climbing can't blow out Iowa State.
- 34:41You can barely beat them. Yeah, only one was what, 10-9
- 34:44couple years back? Three years back.
- 34:45Don't remember the score. I remember it was close.
- 34:47It wasn't. Yeah.
- 34:48And by the way, Brewers have scored a terrain we talked about
- 34:51in the first segment that they can't get them out.
- 34:53Well, they can't get them out again.
- 34:55Two run, Homer, they're up to zip.
- 34:57They're still batting. Actually, they are not.
- 35:00They are now in the bottom of the second inning, but 2 nothing
- 35:04Brewers. Get it done, Cubs.
- 35:05Come on, give us a little hope. To get it down to within
- 35:09striking distance, that would bring them back to five if they
- 35:12win today and they've got the tiebreaker.
- 35:16We'll see, we'll see. And then they go.
- 35:18The Cubs go to the Angels for the weekend.
- 35:22Speaking of the West Coast. You're playing there tonight.
- 35:25I am. Give me your boy.
- 35:27You were trying to make him quit baseball.
- 35:29Who? Justin Verlander.
- 35:31Just a month ago. He got his record now.
- 35:33What a night. There you go.
- 35:35Is ER as 4.23 all? Right, it's.
- 35:38Doesn't get much run support. We're going to grab the plus 160
- 35:40though. Tonight weren't anything Dylan
- 35:42sees. Talk about a disappointment.
- 35:44That's been a disease. Brutal.
- 35:46Dress it is a. But you know, when you watch him
- 35:48pitch, you're watching pitch 2 innings.
- 35:50Oh yeah. Unhittable baseball.
- 35:51Yeah. And then he'll run into trouble,
- 35:54he'll walk a guy and is he a mental Midget?
- 35:57You think that's what it is. He he kind of has that kind of
- 36:00feel to him when you watch him, because you're right.
- 36:02You watch one and he like, how does anybody get a hit against
- 36:04him, right? And then it blows up and it
- 36:07blows up often. So we got one in MLB, OK, one in
- 36:10pre season. So what's?
- 36:11The game in the NFL you love. It is the Giants and the
- 36:16Patriots, OK? Not because of the 18 and O
- 36:21ending at the hands of the Giants.
- 36:22That has nothing to do with it. Because of what we've seen.
- 36:26Jackson Tart. Yeah, he's been good.
- 36:28And Jameis, yeah. He's been.
- 36:29Good. And the quarterback position is
- 36:31significantly a huge backup. Quarterback position.
- 36:35Because it doesn't look like Drake May is going to play, It
- 36:37doesn't look like on the other side hustle Russell is going to
- 36:39be playing either. So it's going to be backups and
- 36:41the advantage is significant on the Giants.
- 36:44Side Joshua Dobbs. -6 1/2 I will lay it with the G man tonight in
- 36:51one final game. We're going to go out, never bet
- 36:54against the streak and we're not going to do that because the
- 36:55Aces are playing incredibly well.
- 36:58AJ Wilson has turned it back on and now her team mates are
- 37:01finally helping her out. We will grab the Aces lay the
- 37:041:00 tonight against Phoenix in LV.
- 37:06So can the Aces win this thing? I I don't think I think the
- 37:11parts around her aren't good enough to be able to win likely
- 37:152 series against the Lynx as Collier might be back tonight.
- 37:21That's one to keep an eye on huge.
- 37:22And of course, the Liberty, I don't think there's enough there
- 37:25around her to do it. But could they get to the final
- 37:27four, get to the semifinals? Yeah, I think they're playing at
- 37:30that kind of level. Cubs have runners on 1st and 2nd
- 37:34with two outs in the bottom of the second as they try to either
- 37:37get on the board or maybe perfect world, take the lead,
- 37:40tie things up. We shall see where this one
- 37:42goes. Right now the Brewers have the
- 37:45lead. OK again, tomorrow, football
- 37:48Friday, we're not making picks. Tomorrow you and I are.
- 37:51Correct. No, we, if you have one that you
- 37:54like, I mean, we can do that. Where do you, where do you fall
- 37:56on Stanford? Hawaii's the number move too
- 37:58much? I think so it's a 5 point swing.
- 38:01Yeah, I'm on the buyback side. Our TV show, I'd grabbed
- 38:04Stanford when it got to 2 1/2 I think.
- 38:06Yeah, the buyback's been too big here.
