- 0:02The human mind likes to have nice, neat categories, either or
- 0:06black, white. It has a hard time dealing with
- 0:10mixed actions or anything that partakes of various allegedly
- 0:14competing or conflicting principles.
- 0:17Thus the debate over free will and determinism rages on and
- 0:23eventually comes down to whether the divine actually directs
- 0:26every moment of one's life, thoughts, actions, reactions,
- 0:32responses, et cetera, or whether there is any room for individual
- 0:38discretion or some element of free will.
- 0:43Recently, Stanford neurobiologist Robert Sapolsky,
- 0:47in his book titled Determined, a Science of Life Without Free
- 0:51Will, explained why he does not believe that there is any such
- 0:55thing as free will and that every action is determined and
- 0:59controlled by both external pressures and past cause and
- 1:04effect. This is not a new or unique
- 1:07viewpoint, but it is totally based on the mechanisms of the
- 1:11external world and its development and does not account
- 1:15for any divine intention or any soul or psychic being that
- 1:21grows, develops annex as a Nexus for action and implementation of
- 1:27the divine will. Such growth and development
- 1:32would have no meaning if everything down to the smallest
- 1:36detail were actually predetermined.
- 1:41The Bible also weighs in on the side of determinism.
- 1:44When Jesus indicates that the fate of each small bird is noted
- 1:48by God and that a person's hair on his head is numbered.
- 1:53While ostensibly providing a message about how the personal
- 1:56God of the judeo-christian tradition loves and cares for
- 2:01every smallest individual in detail, it is really a message
- 2:05of how determined everything actually is in that viewpoint.
- 2:10Where is the room for free will to act if the very comings and
- 2:14goings of each small bird or the hair on the head of each
- 2:17individual is under direct divine scrutiny?
- 2:22And yet, in other places the Bible assumes a certain level of
- 2:27free will of individuals, and thus the entire question of the
- 2:32fall of man and the need for redemption through actions of a
- 2:37Saviour arise. The issue is clearly not
- 2:40resolved one way or the other there.
- 2:44This highlights the inherent confusion and ambivalence of our
- 2:48mental notions of the significance of our lives and
- 2:52the role of the divine in the lives we lead in the external
- 2:56world. Some earlier articles in our
- 2:59series reviewing the hidden forces of life went into
- 3:03considerable detail about the interaction of free will and
- 3:06determinism, and the role of each and the ability for these
- 3:10two seemingly opposite principles to coexist.
- 3:15The main lines are basically determined, but each individual,
- 3:19each unit is left free within that framework to act or not
- 3:24act, to move or not move, to decide or not decide, et cetera.
- 3:31This creates A statistical distribution, with most
- 3:34decisions winding up within a relatively narrow range, with
- 3:38some falling above and some below that central pathway.
- 3:44One way or the other, the larger divine intention is still
- 3:47carried out, but at the same time, the individual elements
- 3:52are able to grow, evolve, make mistakes and learn from them and
- 3:58follow a natural path based on their own evolutionary station
- 4:03and the needs of their further development.
- 4:07A disciple asks mother, is the orientation of an individual's
- 4:12life directed by the psychic? The mother responds.
- 4:16Quote Yes, absolutely unconsciously for the individual
- 4:22most of the time. But it is the psychic which
- 4:25organizes his existence only in what may be called the main
- 4:29lines, because for intervening in the details they would have
- 4:34to be a conscious union between the outer being, that is the
- 4:38vital and physical being, and the psychic being.
- 4:42But usually this does not exist so externally in the details.
- 4:48For example, there was someone who in deep perplexity said to
- 4:52me, well, if it is the psychic being, or rather the divine and
- 4:57the psychic who directs our life, it is he who decides the
- 5:01number of pieces of sugar. I put in my teacup.
- 5:04That was the question verbatim. So the answer had to be no,
- 5:10because it is not a detailed intervention of this kind.
- 5:14It is as when you push your fist into a heap of iron filings or
- 5:18sawdust, all the infinitesimal little elements of the iron
- 5:22filings or sawdust are organized to take on the form of your
- 5:27fist. But they do not do this either
- 5:30deliberately or consciously. It is through the work of the
- 5:34consciousness which pushes that this kind of thing happens.
- 5:38There is no decision that each element is going to be exactly
- 5:42in this place like that. It is the effect of the energy
- 5:47which has pushed the 1st that organizes the elements.
- 5:51But that's how it is. There is the psychic
- 5:55consciousness at work in life, organizing all the circumstances
- 5:59of your life, but not with a deliberate choice of the
- 6:04details. End Quote Reference Shrioro,
