- 0:03Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the Overland Journal podcast. I am
- 0:06Speaker 1: your host, Scott Brady, and for this week's conversation, we're
- 0:09Speaker 1: going to talk about segment one of our trans Africa
- 0:13Speaker 1: trip with the INEOS Grenadier Joe's going to join me
- 0:17Speaker 1: on this conversation. We're currently in Tofu in Mozambique, where
- 0:21Speaker 1: we're going to talk about taking delivery of the vehicle
- 0:24Speaker 1: in Durban, the delays that we had around getting the
- 0:27Speaker 1: vehicle paperwork, our carnate a passage, how we were able
- 0:31Speaker 1: to get the vehicle imported and then drive it to
- 0:34Speaker 1: Johannesburg for some preparation. We added a front runner rack
- 0:38Speaker 1: and some other accessories to the vehicle navigation tools, and
- 0:42Speaker 1: we're going to talk about all of that today. And
- 0:44Speaker 1: then we drove the vehicle through the Cedarbergs in South
- 0:48Speaker 1: Africa down to Cape Town and then onto Cape Agullis.
- 0:52Speaker 1: We started at the INEOS headquarters in Cape Town and
- 0:56Speaker 1: we started north up the Eastern Cape where we really
- 1:00Speaker 1: enjoyed some beautiful time along the coast before entering Mozambique
- 1:04Speaker 1: and some remote beach camping. So we're going to talk
- 1:07Speaker 1: a lot about how we've prepared the vehicle, how we've
- 1:10Speaker 1: worked together as a team, the things that we've learned
- 1:12Speaker 1: along the way, stuff that's working and the stuff that's
- 1:15Speaker 1: not working quite as well. So please enjoy our segment
- 1:18Speaker 1: one on trans Africa with the Enios Grenadier.
- 1:24Speaker 2: And a special thanks to Rocky Talkies for their support
- 1:28Speaker 2: of this week's podcast. Rocky Talkies are back country radios
- 1:32Speaker 2: designed by a small team in Denver. The radios are
- 1:35Speaker 2: extremely rugged, easy to use, and compact, weighing in just
- 1:39Speaker 2: under eight ounces. They have a range of one to
- 1:42Speaker 2: five miles in the mountains and up to twenty five
- 1:45Speaker 2: miles line of sight. The batteries will last from three
- 1:48Speaker 2: to five days and you can recharge them easily via
- 1:52Speaker 2: USBC right in the vehicle. Our team uses Rocky Talkies
- 1:56Speaker 2: and we also use them recently at the Overland Expo.
- 2:00Speaker 2: The next Overland Expo, stop into our booth and say

- 2:19Speaker 1: So Joe, we have made it to what was your
- 2:22Speaker 1: first objective, which was to get.
- 2:24Speaker 3: To tofu in Mozambique. This is an.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Incredible place, and we're at the Turtle Cove Lodge here,
- 2:34Speaker 1: which is just such a peaceful, like calming point along
- 2:39Speaker 1: the trip to get some work done. There's some Wi
- 2:41Speaker 1: Fi here, some comfortable but very simple accommodation, and quick
- 2:46Speaker 1: access to a lot of really beautiful places around here.
- 2:49Speaker 3: So this has been this has been.
- 2:50Speaker 1: A great little stop, yeah, along the journey, and you're
- 2:55Speaker 1: getting ready to fly back to Johannesburg for a bunch
- 2:59Speaker 1: of other adventures you're going to be doing with the
- 3:00Speaker 1: motorcycles here soon. So and then I'm going to continue
- 3:04Speaker 1: on through Malawi and end up to Dara Salam and Tanzania.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Over the next couple weeks, we're all stage the vehicle,
- 3:11Speaker 1: but we're really going to kind of do a wrap
- 3:14Speaker 1: up or an overview of what we've accomplished so far,
- 3:17Speaker 1: and maybe we just kind of give everybody a little
- 3:20Speaker 1: bit of a background to how we got even started
- 3:23Speaker 1: this thing. So, this trip to cross Africa, I've been
- 3:28Speaker 1: planning it for four years and my original plan was
- 3:32Speaker 1: just to take a motorcycle and just ride it myself
- 3:35Speaker 1: solo up through the continent, you know, just to have
- 3:40Speaker 1: that experience myself.
- 3:41Speaker 3: But I realize with time that I wanted to do it.
- 3:45Speaker 1: I love to travel with people that I care about,
- 3:47Speaker 1: and you're a close friend, and so it's it's it
- 3:50Speaker 1: makes a lot of sense to have a companion along
- 3:53Speaker 1: for journeys for a lot of reasons, just you're having
- 3:55Speaker 1: a hard day, or just to share the driving responsibilities
- 3:58Speaker 1: and everything else. But I think we looked at the
- 4:01Speaker 1: timing and it was somewhere around last September and you
- 4:04Speaker 1: were in Namibia on a SAT phone and we we
- 4:09Speaker 1: were having a conversation about the possibility of you coming
- 4:12Speaker 1: along on a trans Africa trip, and we were originally
- 4:16Speaker 1: supposed to get the vehicle, like late April was when
- 4:20Speaker 1: I finally got word that we had this vehicle. And
- 4:23Speaker 1: then I worked with THEOS team to be able to
- 4:25Speaker 1: fly to the UK and test the vehicle out and
- 4:30Speaker 1: spend some time with it and make sure that it
- 4:31Speaker 1: was baseline for the trip. So I'm sending you updates
- 4:35Speaker 1: on that and this, And I think at first, I
- 4:37Speaker 1: don't know about you, but for me, I was like
- 4:40Speaker 1: I really wanted either the White One or the Magic mushroom.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Color, the Magic Mushroom, which I think is your favorite
- 4:47Speaker 4: out of than.
- 4:49Speaker 1: H and because they're both just such classic expedition vehicle colors,
- 4:54Speaker 1: and it's also the vehicle color choice I've used for
- 4:57Speaker 1: so many of my trips. You know, they look clean, longer,
- 5:01Speaker 1: and they and they look a little more nondescript running
- 5:05Speaker 1: around a country. But we ended up with this green
- 5:08Speaker 1: one and it's it's like a British racing green but
- 5:11Speaker 1: a little bit darker. And now that we've had it
- 5:14Speaker 1: for a while, I kind of loved the color. I'm
- 5:15Speaker 1: really in love with it. It looks beautiful in photographs
- 5:19Speaker 1: and it just plays with a light. You know, if
- 5:21Speaker 1: you got direct light on it, it looks bright green.
- 5:23Speaker 1: If you got indirect light, it looks dark green. So
- 5:28Speaker 1: it's just a it's super handsome to sea beautiful, Yeah,
- 5:31Speaker 1: beautiful color.
- 5:32Speaker 3: It really is.
- 5:33Speaker 1: And then I think it was towards late May, I'm
- 5:38Speaker 1: leaving the UK and the vehicle gets transported down to
- 5:42Speaker 1: Southampton and then goes onto a boat, and then it
- 5:47Speaker 1: was it was all of a sudden go time, like yeah,
- 5:51Speaker 1: we've been waiting and planning and staging, and then before
- 5:56Speaker 1: we knew it.
- 5:56Speaker 3: It was go time.
- 5:57Speaker 1: The car was on a boat and it was heading
- 5:59Speaker 1: to Africa, and I just remember the conversation that we
- 6:04Speaker 1: had because we One of the things for those that
- 6:06Speaker 1: are listening, I think it's a great idea when you're
- 6:10Speaker 1: planning a trip with your partner, so let's say it's
- 6:12Speaker 1: your husband or your wife, is to have regular meetings
- 6:18Speaker 1: around the trip so that way people can share what
- 6:21Speaker 1: it is that they want to experience, where they'd really
- 6:24Speaker 1: like to go, their concerns. You can get shared equipment
- 6:28Speaker 1: lists and start to distill those down so you end
- 6:30Speaker 1: up with fewer redundancies and you don't forget stuff. So
- 6:35Speaker 1: we did a really good job of having almost weekly
- 6:39Speaker 1: check in. Sometimes it was fifteen minutes, but other times
- 6:42Speaker 1: it was an hour and a half that we're talking
- 6:44Speaker 1: through more serious planning points and then the vehicles on
- 6:52Speaker 1: the boat, and then we really ramp up. We're really
- 6:54Speaker 1: ramping up the conversation and we're starting to pin down timeframe.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And I think that we were looking at being on
- 7:02Speaker 1: the road like within the first week or so of July,
- 7:06Speaker 1: because the vehicle was supposed to arrive originally in Durban
- 7:10Speaker 1: around the twenty third or so, and then it ended
- 7:14Speaker 1: up arriving the twenty eighth into Durban, but there were
- 7:18Speaker 1: delays with the carne So yeah, this is Africa.
- 7:23Speaker 3: So I I land in Johannesburg.
- 7:27Speaker 1: You picked me up from the airport I think on
- 7:29Speaker 1: the twenty sixth, twenty seventh, something like that of June
- 7:34Speaker 1: of June, so then, but we don't have access to
- 7:37Speaker 1: the vehicle, so we made good use of the time.
- 7:41Speaker 1: One of the things that was a learning from this
- 7:44Speaker 1: trip for the listener is you've been using we Work,
- 7:49Speaker 1: a we work facility in Johannesburg, and I had never
- 7:54Speaker 1: been to a we Work.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I'd never used one.
- 7:56Speaker 1: I mean, I've worked in plenty of coffee shops, but
- 7:58Speaker 1: I'd never gone to a place that's really meant to
- 8:01Speaker 1: get work done and it's structured and designed in a
- 8:04Speaker 1: way to maximize that. And You're like, you know, you
- 8:07Speaker 1: should come to we Work since we got time, and
- 8:10Speaker 1: so thanks for that. I mean that that ended up being,
- 8:14Speaker 1: you know, such a valuable tool to get four or five, six, seven,
- 8:18Speaker 1: eight hours of work done in a day with really
- 8:21Speaker 1: good Wi Fi, unaffected by the load shedding, the power
- 8:24Speaker 1: outages that they're having in Johannesburg, and how long had
- 8:28Speaker 1: you been using we Work?
- 8:29Speaker 4: So I just started using we Work in January. You know,
- 8:33Speaker 4: I've had a I've had a small office in my
- 8:36Speaker 4: house that's actually like an old linen closet. That's that
- 8:40Speaker 4: I've been using for probably four or five years. And
- 8:43Speaker 4: it's been great to have my own little space in
- 8:45Speaker 4: the house. But with working in a house comes a
- 8:48Speaker 4: lot of distractions, sure, and i'd really been struggling with
- 8:52Speaker 4: it over the past couple of years. And I came
- 8:55Speaker 4: back from holiday early January. My first day back in
- 8:59Speaker 4: my small office, I tried to start working. One of
- 9:02Speaker 4: my dogs is scratching at the door. Someone knocks on
- 9:05Speaker 4: the door out front while the dogs start barking, My
- 9:08Speaker 4: wife wants something, someone else is at the door. There's
- 9:11Speaker 4: all kinds of distractions, and I lost it and I
- 9:14Speaker 4: was like, you know what, today is the day I
- 9:16Speaker 4: look into we Work and I looked them up online,
- 9:20Speaker 4: got the address, and I got in the car immediately
- 9:23Speaker 4: drove up there, said hey, what's the deal? Show me around?
- 9:27Speaker 4: And the place was beautiful.
- 9:28Speaker 3: It's stunning, I mean from my house and new building.
- 9:31Speaker 4: And I think I think that building in Rosebank had
- 9:35Speaker 4: been constructed at least within the last three years, and
- 9:39Speaker 4: you know, I went in there and was blown away.
- 9:41Speaker 4: It was five floors of co working space. And then
- 9:45Speaker 4: some of those offices are dedicated to companies and you know,
- 9:51Speaker 4: they said, we got you know, Wi Fi, we're not
- 9:53Speaker 4: effected by load shedding, and we've got free coffee. And
- 9:56Speaker 4: I tested the coffee and it got my produce and
- 9:59Speaker 4: I was like, that's.
- 9:59Speaker 3: A big yeah for sure, So time saver.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Yeah. Absolutely.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Then you're not stopping at the coffee shop on your way.
- 10:06Speaker 3: You're just you go and you get into work mode.
- 10:09Speaker 4: And what's also nice about we work is it's open
- 10:12Speaker 4: twenty four to seven. So if you as long as
- 10:15Speaker 4: you have your key card on you haven't forgot it
- 10:17Speaker 4: at home, you can go in there twenty four hours
- 10:19Speaker 4: a day. So there's plenty of times where you know,
- 10:22Speaker 4: we mentioned another podcast that I get up early and
- 10:24Speaker 4: I would go in at six thirty or seven and
- 10:28Speaker 4: I can just get a lot done there. There's no distractions.
- 10:31Speaker 4: It really allowed me to be a lot more creative
- 10:34Speaker 4: with my time and really get work done. So it's
- 10:40Speaker 4: been such a huge investment and worthy investment of my
- 10:44Speaker 4: time and for the business, and I get a lot
- 10:48Speaker 4: done and it's great for you know, people come to
- 10:50Speaker 4: visit like yourself, or I need to book a meeting
- 10:53Speaker 4: with someone and say hey, come to we work. I
- 10:55Speaker 4: book a conference room. I can also do video conferencing
- 10:59Speaker 4: from there, and it's just a much more nicer business
- 11:03Speaker 4: style approach to meetings, and.
- 11:06Speaker 3: It puts you in a business mindset getting work done.
- 11:10Speaker 1: What I'd love to see would be like a worldwide
- 11:14Speaker 1: pass option with we Work and then you know, like
- 11:20Speaker 1: some people have gym memberships at work all over the place,
- 11:23Speaker 1: but the ability to be able to go from city
- 11:26Speaker 1: to city around the world and have access to these
- 11:31Speaker 1: kinds of workspaces, I found it to be super helpful.
- 11:35Speaker 3: So that was a learning that happened early on in
- 11:37Speaker 3: the trip.
- 11:37Speaker 1: So we got a bunch of work done and then
- 11:39Speaker 1: I was able to grab Triumph Tiger from Triumph in Johannesburg.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Bruce was super gracious and letting me use a motorcycle,
- 11:49Speaker 1: so I got to ride a motorcycle back and forth
- 11:51Speaker 1: from the airbnb do we Work, and then we all
- 11:55Speaker 1: a bunch of us got to go out on a
- 11:57Speaker 1: Sunday and scrambled to do a little scramble through the
- 12:00Speaker 1: dirt and have a great breakfast, and so we were
- 12:03Speaker 1: able to fill in fill in the time. That's one
- 12:06Speaker 1: of the things that I've learned in travels is it
- 12:09Speaker 1: so easy when things start to not go according to
- 12:12Speaker 1: plan that we really lock down or we feel frustrated,
- 12:17Speaker 1: and then it kind of becomes dead time where not
- 12:20Speaker 1: a lot of.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Good is coming from it.
- 12:22Speaker 1: But because and I think COVID and the lockdowns really
- 12:26Speaker 1: helped a lot of us see through that sometimes things
- 12:30Speaker 1: are going to be outside of your control, but you
- 12:32Speaker 1: still have that time they do something either productive or
- 12:36Speaker 1: joyful or healthy. So you know, every day I was
- 12:40Speaker 1: able to fit in a workout, I was able to
- 12:43Speaker 1: go to we work and get work done. We were
- 12:46Speaker 1: still able to socialize with people later in the day
- 12:49Speaker 1: and even get in a good motorcycle ride.
- 12:52Speaker 3: So that was that was awesome.
- 12:54Speaker 1: And then things got delayed even further because the carnate
- 12:58Speaker 1: was coming from cars UK and it was supposed to
- 13:01Speaker 1: be couriered, which normally a courier service, which a courier
- 13:06Speaker 1: service traditionally is someone goes to the facility into a
- 13:12Speaker 1: person goes to the facility. Through this courier service, they
- 13:15Speaker 1: pick up the document or the small item, and they
- 13:19Speaker 1: drive it to the airport. It gets put on a plane,
- 13:23Speaker 1: and then there's a corresponding courier on the other side
- 13:27Speaker 1: that picks up the document and drives it directly to
- 13:30Speaker 1: the point of origin, like where you need it to be.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So a proper courier service, oftentimes, even around the world,
- 13:38Speaker 1: can be done in twenty four to thirty six hours.
- 13:42Speaker 3: But it was five days. It was they used a
- 13:45Speaker 3: traditional you.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Know, just DHL or something like that, and so there
- 13:51Speaker 1: was even more time delayed. So then Jess from Easyon
- 13:55Speaker 1: was super thoughtful and he says, hey, take my Highlux.
- 14:00Speaker 1: So I was able to grab Jess's Highlux and go out.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And I actually stayed in this little cottage that backed
- 14:09Speaker 1: up to a game reserve and there was no Wi Fi,
- 14:15Speaker 1: but there was good cell coverage, so I could hotspot
- 14:17Speaker 1: my phone and still get work done. I did a
- 14:20Speaker 1: lot of reading. Read a really interesting book called Deep
- 14:24Speaker 1: Work by Cal Newport and it's a current favorite. It's
- 14:29Speaker 1: really really good. I'm not totally finished with it, but
- 14:32Speaker 1: it's a really exceptional book and it just kind of
- 14:35Speaker 1: helped get me in a different mindset about segmenting my time,
- 14:40Speaker 1: because we can be in travel mode, and then we
- 14:42Speaker 1: can be in work mode, we can be in creative mode,
- 14:44Speaker 1: we can be in health mode. But the fewer distractions
- 14:48Speaker 1: that we have or the fewer bleedovers between those disciplines,
- 14:53Speaker 1: the better the more we actually get done. So it
- 14:55Speaker 1: forced me to really take a deep look at my
- 14:59Speaker 1: routine so that way I could be more productive. But
- 15:03Speaker 1: then I also had lions and cheetaha and uh what
- 15:07Speaker 1: else was a wild dog?
- 15:09Speaker 3: You know? So in zebra and yeah, giraffe and everything else.
- 15:14Speaker 1: So I was able to go out on game drives
- 15:16Speaker 1: in the Hilux with my camera and be creative and
- 15:20Speaker 1: capture some beautiful images. And then finally I get the
- 15:25Speaker 1: word that they have the carne. And I had booked
- 15:31Speaker 1: a flight and then canceled the flight, and then booked
- 15:33Speaker 1: another flight and canceled that flight, and then they say, oh,
- 15:37Speaker 1: we've got it and the car will probably be out tomorrow.
- 15:39Speaker 1: So then I'm last minute booking a flight to Durwan.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I get there and then the next and that was
- 15:47Speaker 1: another thing because the carne wasn't signed. It created all
- 15:52Speaker 1: kinds of complexities too, because originally and normally that's not
- 15:55Speaker 1: a problem through a power of attorney. But for whatever
- 15:58Speaker 1: reason that that agent on the custom side in Durban
- 16:04Speaker 1: was just not willing to let to sign off the
- 16:07Speaker 1: carne without it being physically signed. Which I'm not saying
- 16:09Speaker 1: that that's a bad thing. It just normally that can
- 16:12Speaker 1: be handled with the power of attorney. But it required
- 16:15Speaker 1: me to instead of flying into Ceda Meritzburg, Peter Merritzberg,
- 16:19Speaker 1: I had to fly into Durban and then get right
- 16:22Speaker 1: downtown to the to the port and get the thing signed.
- 16:25Speaker 1: But they made it. They made it happen quickly. I
- 16:28Speaker 1: probably wasn't even there for six hours and it was
- 16:34Speaker 1: in the country. They offloaded it. The battery was dead
- 16:38Speaker 1: because it it had been well. It was sitting on
- 16:41Speaker 1: a boat for a month and then sitting in the
- 16:44Speaker 1: port for three weeks and.
- 16:47Speaker 3: So, but the battery was unaffected.
- 16:49Speaker 1: It was actually really clever because in the Grenadier there's
- 16:52Speaker 1: actually a page that you can select on power on
- 16:57Speaker 1: the screen, so you can actually see the amount of
- 17:00Speaker 1: amps going into the battery and then the current state
- 17:04Speaker 1: of charge of the battery. So it really gave me
- 17:07Speaker 1: some you know, it gave me some confidence that the
- 17:10Speaker 1: battery was recovering, it was being charged, it was going
- 17:13Speaker 1: to work, it was gonna it was going to all
- 17:16Speaker 1: kind of play out the way that I wanted it to.
- 17:18Speaker 3: So, yes, we got the battery charge, and.
- 17:23Speaker 4: So I had to jump you.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Yeah, well, yeah, they used a jump pack or something
- 17:27Speaker 1: like that to get the things started. And and then
- 17:29Speaker 1: of course when it comes off of the boat, there's
- 17:32Speaker 1: a couple of tablespoons of fuel left. I mean, it's
- 17:34Speaker 1: supposed to be empty empty pretty much. And so fortunately
- 17:39Speaker 1: within a few blocks there's a gas station. Now the
- 17:42Speaker 1: vehicle's filled up, and I'm on my way. But I
- 17:46Speaker 1: ended up because it was the weekend, I couldn't bring
- 17:49Speaker 1: it to front Runner.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Yeah, so but I made it a little again.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I chose to make it a live time and I
- 17:58Speaker 1: was able to have a little bit of an adventure
- 18:00Speaker 1: through the Drakensburg and did a great like a super
- 18:04Speaker 1: long like a twelve k hike, and it was just
- 18:07Speaker 1: had some beautiful terrain to drive through and also kind
- 18:11Speaker 1: of refamiliarize myself with the vehicle and think about some
- 18:15Speaker 1: things before the modification started. So that was really fun
- 18:18Speaker 1: to just kind of have my first road trip, real
- 18:21Speaker 1: road trip. I mean I did one UK, but that
- 18:23Speaker 1: was a big road trip.
- 18:24Speaker 4: And yeah, I mean you had been you know, you
- 18:26Speaker 4: had been looking forward to that time in the Anios
- 18:29Speaker 4: for quite a long time. I have been, and after
- 18:32Speaker 4: all the delays, like I think it kind of probably
- 18:34Speaker 4: builded built up that anticipation for you. And for sure
- 18:38Speaker 4: the moment you have were given the keys or you
- 18:41Speaker 4: had the keys to turn the car on and start
- 18:46Speaker 4: rolling that first time, it must have been a lot
- 18:48Speaker 4: of excitement. It was.
- 18:50Speaker 1: It was a lot of excitement, but it was a
- 18:51Speaker 1: huge relief because like you can't start the trip without
- 18:55Speaker 1: the vehicle. Yeah, now I was able to still have
- 18:59Speaker 1: a great but it wasn't related to the reason why
- 19:03Speaker 1: I came here, which was to drive this car around Africa.
- 19:06Speaker 1: So it was a huge sense of relief that I
- 19:09Speaker 1: had something that was so important to me, which was
- 19:12Speaker 1: this rended here that's going to transport us across Africa,
- 19:15Speaker 1: and I now had it in my hands, and I
- 19:18Speaker 1: now it was now my responsibility. It was no one else.
- 19:21Speaker 1: I mean, I can still make mistakes, but I don't
- 19:24Speaker 1: have to worry about what others are doing with the vehicle.
- 19:27Speaker 1: It's now within our control and making good choices and
- 19:31Speaker 1: taking our learnings through the years and being thoughtful. So yeah,
- 19:35Speaker 1: so then we get you know, I get back to
- 19:38Speaker 1: Johannesburg and then it's time to get the vehicle modified.
- 19:43Speaker 1: And that was also the first time you got to
- 19:44Speaker 1: see it. I was staying at another little airbnb, which
- 19:48Speaker 1: I have to say, like Airbnb is such a win
- 19:50Speaker 1: for overlay because it's so well in South Africa.
- 19:53Speaker 3: It's so cheap.
- 19:54Speaker 1: I mean, these were these were beautiful little like you
- 19:59Speaker 1: granted cottages or mother in law suits on the side
- 20:04Speaker 1: of these homes in Johannesburg, and they're perfect and they're cheap.
- 20:09Speaker 1: They're like forty something bucks a night, yeah, on average.
- 20:14Speaker 1: But this one had like a big grassy area and
- 20:18Speaker 1: I had the vehicle there and I was going through
- 20:19Speaker 1: the kit and we had all the spars that we
- 20:22Speaker 1: picked up from Innie Austin Durban and you roll in
- 20:27Speaker 1: and that was like the first time, and I was
- 20:29Speaker 1: excited you had seen the car.
- 20:30Speaker 4: Yeah, because I think that day I was I had
- 20:33Speaker 4: to go run some errands and I wasn't planning on
- 20:36Speaker 4: seeing you coming by that day, but I just messaged
- 20:39Speaker 4: you and I was like, hey, I'm out running errands,
- 20:42Speaker 4: Like if you're around or are you gonna be going
- 20:45Speaker 4: through the spare parts, let me know and I'll come
- 20:47Speaker 4: through and help. And you're like, yeah, pull on in,
- 20:50Speaker 4: and you dropped me a pin and I was like, cool,
- 20:51Speaker 4: I'm ten minutes away.
- 20:52Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 20:53Speaker 4: And I remember just driving, like pulling in the driveway
- 20:56Speaker 4: seeing you, and then all in the distance I see
- 20:59Speaker 4: the car and it was so nice to finally have
- 21:03Speaker 4: eyes on the vehicle, you know that we have been
- 21:06Speaker 4: talking about for over eight months. It was a big
- 21:09Speaker 4: build up and a lot to get to that point,
- 21:13Speaker 4: because like I was so excited through many months that
- 21:17Speaker 4: you know, it was almost within reach, and then to
- 21:20Speaker 4: finally actually see it, Yeah, then I allowed myself to
- 21:25Speaker 4: like get.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Excited, celebrate, yeah, a little bit.
- 21:27Speaker 4: That was it was. It was definitely a small celebration
- 21:30Speaker 4: in that moment to see it.
- 21:32Speaker 1: And what I remember is it was maybe a month
- 21:35Speaker 1: or so prior. Our mutual friend Alan who does some
- 21:39Speaker 1: work with Idios now too, he had one of the
- 21:44Speaker 1: prototypes or an early production model or something, and.
- 21:48Speaker 3: He brought it by.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Yeah, and you got a chance to sit in it
- 21:52Speaker 1: and make sure you actually fit, because for those that
- 21:54Speaker 1: are listening and not watching this on YouTube, I'm six'
- 21:59Speaker 1: one And joe towers over me at six, Seven SO
- 22:04Speaker 1: i fit in the vehicle, Great but you actually. Fit,
- 22:09Speaker 1: like how does it feel being in the driver's? Seat
- 22:12Speaker 1: like what adjustments do you make to make it comfortable for?
- 22:14Speaker 4: You so for, ME i take it all the way
- 22:18Speaker 4: back and Then i'll drop the seat all the way,
- 22:20Speaker 4: down and Then i'll rock the seat back just a
- 22:22Speaker 4: little bit past sort of ninety, degrees SO i like
- 22:26Speaker 4: to kind of just have a little bit of a.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Lean and then for, me as long as the seat's
- 22:31Speaker 4: all the way back and all the way, Down i'm super.
- 22:33Speaker 4: Comfortable you. Know there was a couple of times on
- 22:35Speaker 4: the trip where we had some camera gear behind the,
- 22:38Speaker 4: seat SO i couldn't go all the way, back BUT
- 22:40Speaker 4: i was still quite, comfortable not all the way. Back
- 22:44Speaker 4: and you, KNOW i had been in a. Vehicle i'd
- 22:47Speaker 4: been in A defender years ago BECAUSE i was very
- 22:51Speaker 4: interested in A defender and someone brought a vehicle by
- 22:55Speaker 4: the house for me to try, out AND i was, Like,
- 22:57Speaker 4: okay let me see IF i can fit in this
- 23:00Speaker 4: at it and it was Like, OKAY i Guess i'm
- 23:01Speaker 4: never owning A. Defender, yeah because it was it was,
- 23:04Speaker 4: bad just no. Room and so When alan brought That grena,
- 23:08Speaker 4: nearby you, know before the, trip that was the first
- 23:13Speaker 4: THING i wanted to find, out like what AM i
- 23:14Speaker 4: going to feel like in? Here and DON'T i mean
- 23:17Speaker 4: it's critical for our?
- 23:19Speaker 3: Trip, yeah is that you could actually drive? It?
- 23:21Speaker 4: Oh, yeah AND i. WAS i. WAS i was very.
- 23:24Speaker 4: IMPRESSED i felt LIKE i had a lot of. Room
- 23:26Speaker 4: and you, know all the days That i've been, driving
- 23:29Speaker 4: in the long hours That i'm either driving or sitting
- 23:31Speaker 4: in the passenger, Seat i've been super. Comfortable you, Know
- 23:34Speaker 4: i'm NOT i don't feel. CRAMPED i feel LIKE i
- 23:37Speaker 4: have plenty of room to move, around especially if i'm, passenger,
- 23:40Speaker 4: yeah you, know and kind of shift, around put my
- 23:42Speaker 4: legs up and just get. Comfortable and so for god my,
- 23:46Speaker 4: heid it's it's, okay and it's it's not it's more than.
- 23:50Speaker 4: Okay it's it's pretty damn. Good.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Yeah and you've done long driving, STINTS i mean, five,
- 23:55Speaker 1: six seven hours at a, Time, yeah already on this
- 23:58Speaker 1: trip where you've had a lot of time behind the
- 24:00Speaker 1: wheel to get a sense for if it actually. Works
- 24:03Speaker 1: and because this is a Field master excuse, me, yeah
- 24:07Speaker 1: this is a Field, master it has the leather, interior
- 24:11Speaker 1: And i'm normally not a fan of. Leather for these
- 24:15Speaker 1: leather is great for a city vehicle or for a
- 24:17Speaker 1: family vehicle because leather is so much easier to clean
- 24:20Speaker 1: up than cloth. Seats but because we were able to
- 24:25Speaker 1: reach out To james From melville And, moon who is
- 24:28Speaker 1: the inenios least In africa seat cover, supplier and they
- 24:35Speaker 1: make some of the best seat covers in the, world
- 24:38Speaker 1: so we were able to get those cloth seat you,
- 24:42Speaker 1: know cotton canvas seat covers installed.
- 24:45Speaker 3: And then immediately the car was just. Sorted for.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Me now WHAT i do that's different from, you and
- 24:52Speaker 1: it actually makes it where we almost don't need to
- 24:53Speaker 1: make any other adjustments to the view, mirror the side.
- 24:56Speaker 3: Mirrors is That i'll get in the driver's.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Seat and then because it has these are all manual recaro,
- 25:04Speaker 1: seats so there's no electronics in the seats at, all
- 25:06Speaker 1: WHICH i.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Think is a good. Thing, well it does have heated,
- 25:08Speaker 3: seats but.
- 25:11Speaker 1: It does have the ability to lift the, seat So
- 25:14Speaker 1: i'll crank the seat up probably about two or two
- 25:19Speaker 1: and a half inches and Then i'm back kind of
- 25:21Speaker 1: in that same zone that you would be in the lower.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Position so it works.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Out it works out just just perfect to do, that
- 25:29Speaker 1: AND i have found it to be really. COMFORTABLE i
- 25:31Speaker 1: like the steering wheel, size which is probably helpful for you.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Too it's not too.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Oversized and then you, know it's this leather comfortable steering.
- 25:40Speaker 4: Wheel, yeah it's got a good, grip good. Grip it
- 25:42Speaker 4: feels soft.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Like, yeah but it's also like beefy enough where you
- 25:46Speaker 1: don't feel like you've got this dainty little steering.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Wheel SO i do like that a. Lot but, Yeah
- 25:53Speaker 3: so then we we're In Joe.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Bird we go through all the, spares and at first
- 25:59Speaker 1: we were both little worried BECAUSE i don't, know there
- 26:02Speaker 1: was five or six boxes a. Lot but it's kind
- 26:05Speaker 1: of like An amazon, package ye, thankfully where like it'd
- 26:08Speaker 1: be some gigantic box and by the time you get
- 26:11Speaker 1: all the stuffing and everything out of, it it was
- 26:12Speaker 1: something much. Smaller the spars kit that we decided on
- 26:17Speaker 1: for this trip is actually quite, limited and a lot of.
- 26:21Speaker 3: That is because the vehicle is so, new so there's.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Really not any trending around a particularly, problem problematic issue
- 26:29Speaker 1: with a, vehicle so there's really not a reason to say, like,
- 26:33Speaker 1: oh this thing is a, problem so you got to
- 26:35Speaker 1: make sure you bring.
- 26:36Speaker 3: One that's not really been a consideration.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Yet but they knew that because of the kind of
- 26:43Speaker 1: traveling we were doing and the weight of the, vehicle
- 26:47Speaker 1: and we'd be off road driving quite a, bit which
- 26:49Speaker 1: would include a lot of traction control. Activation they supply
- 26:53Speaker 1: to set of front room brake. Pads that was something
- 26:55Speaker 1: That enios felt was a good. Thing And i've seen
- 26:58Speaker 1: that another heavy vehicles like A glandavogen and land, cruisers
- 27:04Speaker 1: is that they tend to go through breaks a little
- 27:06Speaker 1: more quickly because they're heavy.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Vehicles this vehicle is close to six thousand. Pounds we
- 27:12Speaker 3: have it outfitted right, now so it's. Heavy so we
- 27:16Speaker 3: have front rear brake, Pads.
- 27:18Speaker 1: We have an engine, belt and then we have the
- 27:20Speaker 1: important filters and spares like a oil, filter we have
- 27:26Speaker 1: a cabin, filter and we also have an air filter
- 27:30Speaker 1: along with. Us and THEN i requested a couple, things
- 27:35Speaker 1: SO i requested an alternator and a.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Starter the starter is really important.
- 27:40Speaker 1: For an automatic transmission. Vehicle despite the make of, it
- 27:44Speaker 1: like it doesn't. Matter if you have a land cruiser
- 27:46Speaker 1: or a Gew wagon or A grenadier or a, defender
- 27:50Speaker 1: you should bring as an automatic, better bring a starter
- 27:53Speaker 1: along because you can't jump start. It, no you can't
- 27:56Speaker 1: pop the clutch and start the vehicle up that. Way
- 28:00Speaker 1: there's not another way around. That so for, ME i
- 28:04Speaker 1: knew it was important to have an extra, starter and
- 28:08Speaker 1: a lot of that can come from deep water. Crossings
- 28:10Speaker 1: you can do really, deep progressive deep water, crossings which
- 28:14Speaker 1: is possible on this, trip and the starters can fail
- 28:17Speaker 1: because they can get filled with silt or mud or
- 28:20Speaker 1: the damage to the, brushes so it was really good
- 28:23Speaker 1: for us to have a spare. Starter we also have
- 28:25Speaker 1: a spare, alternator which is also important because it's such
- 28:30Speaker 1: a heavily electronic, vehicle much less so than a lot
- 28:33Speaker 1: of other modern, vehicles but it still has enough electronics
- 28:36Speaker 1: and it needs a certain operating voltage in order to run.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Properly so we have an alternator and a spare belt
- 28:42Speaker 3: to go with.
- 28:43Speaker 1: It so there's those basic. Things there was some, bolts
- 28:47Speaker 1: some extra lug. Nuts we brought along an extra set
- 28:52Speaker 1: of front rear license, plates which we actually almost lost
- 28:55Speaker 1: one early on in the. Trip and one of the
- 28:57Speaker 1: bolts was, Out so it's good to bring extra set
- 29:00Speaker 1: of license plates if you can along with. You they
- 29:03Speaker 1: can be stolen or they can be torn off on
- 29:07Speaker 1: the trail by, brush. Etc so it's a good idea
- 29:10Speaker 1: to have have some extra number plates. Along and Then
- 29:14Speaker 1: enios was very generous in providing us with a laptop
- 29:18Speaker 1: and The bosch control unit that you can plug into
- 29:21Speaker 1: THE obd two, outlet so that, way if we do
- 29:24Speaker 1: have a problem that comes up with the, VEHICLE i
- 29:27Speaker 1: can at least go in and diagnose and maybe reset
- 29:31Speaker 1: some of those systems When i'm really, remote when we're
- 29:35Speaker 1: really remote in the. Field, fortunately we haven't had to
- 29:38Speaker 1: use that yet other THAN i tested. IT i tested
- 29:40Speaker 1: it in camping down at the kind of homologation facility
- 29:45Speaker 1: here In South, africa made sure that it worked and checked.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Everything but we haven't had to plug it in so
- 29:52Speaker 1: far on the. Trip fingers, crossed knock on wood and
- 29:54Speaker 1: all that other. Stuff but, yeah, overall no issues with the.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Vehicle the only thing that we've had to contend with
- 30:02Speaker 1: a little bit is the high pressure monitoring. System it's
- 30:07Speaker 1: it's a fairly narrow operating, range so in cold, temperatures
- 30:11Speaker 1: you can you can fairly easily get out of that operating,
- 30:14Speaker 1: range either over pressure or under. Pressure and then it
- 30:17Speaker 1: sets off a little warning on the, dash which DOESN'T
- 30:22Speaker 1: i mean hire pressure monitoring. System most vehicles never had,
- 30:24Speaker 1: that so you, know you don't need it to go
- 30:26Speaker 1: across To. Africa but it is something that's been persistent
- 30:30Speaker 1: that we've we've had to make adjustments. With but nothing
- 30:32Speaker 1: else has come up that's stopped us on our.
- 30:36Speaker 4: Journey, no, NO i mean we' we haven't had any
- 30:39Speaker 4: other problems with the. Vehicle and you, know the other
- 30:42Speaker 4: day on the, dunes we pushed it and, yeah it's been.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Fine so what do you think about driving? It what's
- 30:47Speaker 1: your impression so far driving the vehicle on the.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Road, yeah at, first it took me a little bit
- 30:53Speaker 4: to get used. To have felt a bit kind of, Playful,
- 30:56Speaker 4: yeah AND i felt myself kind of correcting it a.
- 30:59Speaker 4: Bit but Now i've kind of gotten used to, it
- 31:02Speaker 4: and NOW i don't notice it AND i, feel you,
- 31:06Speaker 4: know it definitely feels like a big, vehicle but it
- 31:08Speaker 4: drives nice and. Easy and then WHAT i really enjoy
- 31:12Speaker 4: about the, Vehicle And i've said this to you many.
- 31:14Speaker 4: Times is that Cruise, yeah because if you kind of
- 31:17Speaker 4: pass a vehicle whatever and then you just want to
- 31:19Speaker 4: cruise at like one hundred it just has this yeah
- 31:25Speaker 4: we haven't got it one hundred miles prow, no but
- 31:28Speaker 4: it just has this nice cruise that it just you
- 31:32Speaker 4: can see it like feels really happy at that. Speed
- 31:36Speaker 4: so that's been, it.
- 31:37Speaker 1: And then it gets way better fuel, Economy like since
- 31:41Speaker 1: we've been In mozambique and the speeds have dropped down
- 31:44Speaker 1: to that eighty to one hundred kilometer an hour, Range
- 31:47Speaker 1: like the other, DAY i was seeing twelve point three
- 31:50Speaker 1: liters per one HUNDRED, kow so that's.
- 31:53Speaker 3: Over twenty miles to the.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Gallon so that's very encouraging because the early estimated economy
- 32:00Speaker 1: numbers they were a bit concerning for me because it's
- 32:03Speaker 1: a ninety liters fuel tank and we've got some stretches
- 32:07Speaker 1: In africa where we have really long distances to, travel
- 32:10Speaker 1: and then you always have to take into, consideration and
- 32:13Speaker 1: this is something to think about as a, listener is
- 32:16Speaker 1: you're not only trying to make sure that you have
- 32:18Speaker 1: enough fuel to make it from POINT a that you're
- 32:21Speaker 1: at right now where you top off to point b
- 32:24Speaker 1: where you can find fuel.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Reliably, again.
- 32:28Speaker 1: You have to plan for the possibility that you make
- 32:31Speaker 1: it almost all the way to that gas, station but
- 32:35Speaker 1: then the bridge is out or there's something else that
- 32:38Speaker 1: keeps you from making it, through and either you need
- 32:41Speaker 1: to detour a long distance or you need to drive
- 32:44Speaker 1: all the way back to POINT. A so it's not just, that,
- 32:47Speaker 1: Oh i've got to make it one hundred and eighty
- 32:50Speaker 1: k to the next to the next gas, station or
- 32:52Speaker 1: two hundred and twenty k to the next gas. Station
- 32:54Speaker 1: you got to make it two hundred k there and
- 32:56Speaker 1: two hundred backs you got to make it four hundred.
- 32:58Speaker 1: K and so it's been really encouraging to see at
- 33:02Speaker 1: the lower, speeds which makes. Sense it's an EFFICIENT bmw
- 33:06Speaker 1: motor has an eight speed transmission with an, overdrive and
- 33:11Speaker 1: it's a boxy, vehicle so if you keep if you
- 33:14Speaker 1: keep the speeds a little, lower it's not fighting all
- 33:16Speaker 1: that wind resistance so.
- 33:18Speaker 3: Much so.
- 33:21Speaker 1: For, us we needed to make sure we can optimize
- 33:25Speaker 1: the range from the ninety leaders that we have in the,
- 33:29Speaker 1: vehicle but then we also added two twenty Leaders jerry
- 33:32Speaker 1: cans on the, rack and then we have an additional
- 33:36Speaker 1: forty leaders total of these giant loop fuel. Bladders so
- 33:42Speaker 1: if we really have, to if we're really concerned about
- 33:45Speaker 1: range or fuel, quality we can fill up both jerry,
- 33:49Speaker 1: cans of, course fill the ninety leaders in the tank,
- 33:52Speaker 1: up and then also another forty leaders of fuel that
- 33:56Speaker 1: we could strap down inside the, vehicle even in the
- 33:58Speaker 1: footwells with those giant loop. Bags but the real advantage
- 34:02Speaker 1: of those giant loop bags is that when you're done using,
- 34:05Speaker 1: them or right, now when we're not using them.
- 34:07Speaker 3: At, all they're just rolled.
- 34:08Speaker 4: Up, yeah that's they're totally at.
- 34:11Speaker 3: All they Don't we've got it actually underneath the sleeping. Platform.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Yeah so then now we're in Joe berg and it's
- 34:19Speaker 3: we were able to go to Front runner and start
- 34:22Speaker 3: to get some. Modifications the vehicle came with a full length,
- 34:27Speaker 3: rack which is actually a really nice rackets made By Rhino,
- 34:30Speaker 3: rackets a high quality. Unit but there were two things
- 34:34Speaker 3: about it THAT i wanted to, change actually. Three.
- 34:38Speaker 1: Uh the first thing THAT i wanted to address was
- 34:41Speaker 1: that you couldn't use the safari windows and we're In
- 34:45Speaker 1: africa when where we're going to be doing, safaris and
- 34:49Speaker 1: we want to be able to remove those windows and
- 34:53Speaker 1: stand up through on the, seat stand up on the
- 34:55Speaker 1: seats and take photographs of. Wildlife and most of the
- 35:01Speaker 1: vast majority of game reserves do not allow you outside
- 35:05Speaker 1: of the. Vehicle you're not allowed to step outside of the,
- 35:08Speaker 1: vehicle so then you're limited to only shooting out of
- 35:12Speaker 1: one window or the other and you're technically not even
- 35:16Speaker 1: supposed to roll down your, windows and a lot of
- 35:18Speaker 1: them they have signage to. That so the way you
- 35:20Speaker 1: get around it is you pop the safari windows out
- 35:23Speaker 1: before you go into the game reserve and then stand
- 35:26Speaker 1: up on the seat and you can get three hundred
- 35:28Speaker 1: and sixty degrees also at a higher vantage, point so
- 35:31Speaker 1: if you're shooting giraffe and elephant and everything, else you're
- 35:35Speaker 1: at a really optimal and safe vantage even with.
- 35:39Speaker 3: Predators SO i thought that was really.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Cool then the second reason that we went with a
- 35:44Speaker 1: three quarter rack is that you can't with the full
- 35:48Speaker 1: length factory. Wrack you can't even open the safari, windows
- 35:51Speaker 1: which is unfortunate because there's such.
- 35:54Speaker 3: A great way to bring in a little bit of.
- 35:56Speaker 4: Ventilation, yeah, absolutely especially when we come into. TOWNS i
- 36:00Speaker 4: find whenever we're you, know riding a bit slow or
- 36:03Speaker 4: heading through a. Town it's nice to just kind of
- 36:06Speaker 4: pop up those windows and allow that a airflow in
- 36:09Speaker 4: and to not have access to that would be would be.
- 36:14Speaker 4: Unfortunately So i'm glad we have that three. Quarterack, yeah just.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Lets us utilize a very cool feature of the. Vehicle
- 36:22Speaker 1: AND i really like The safari. WINDOWS i think they're
- 36:25Speaker 1: just super. Cool, yeah and they're also not, motorized WHICH i.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Like so it saves, weight there's nothing to, fail and
- 36:33Speaker 1: the seal around it is super, robust so you're not
- 36:37Speaker 1: going to you're not highly unlikely to get. Leaks and
- 36:40Speaker 1: then it even has a channel so as the water
- 36:42Speaker 1: comes down and around the window the, glass there's actually
- 36:48Speaker 1: a drain port that goes back out into the. Ground
- 36:51Speaker 1: so even if you had a slightly compromised, seal it
- 36:55Speaker 1: shouldn't actually leak up inside the you, know inside the
- 36:58Speaker 1: right so other than may be at speed or something like.
- 37:01Speaker 1: That but The safari windows are, Great, yeah you, KNOW
- 37:03Speaker 1: i really like. Those and then the last reason is
- 37:06Speaker 1: we're driving so many miles that wind noise can be
- 37:10Speaker 1: fatiguing from a, rack and racks can be very, noisy
- 37:15Speaker 1: and pretty much any full length rack it doesn't matter
- 37:18Speaker 1: who you buy it, from they're going to have some wind.
- 37:20Speaker 3: Noise that's been my.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Experience so it's not, like, oh if you got a
- 37:24Speaker 1: different full length rack from the from the rhino, rack
- 37:28Speaker 1: it would somehow be much.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Quieter that's not been my. Experience the rhino rack was.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Typical noise from a full length, rack but the three quarter,
- 37:37Speaker 1: rack because it moves far enough, back it's, now you,
- 37:41Speaker 1: know outside of this like the slip stream of the
- 37:44Speaker 1: profile of the, vehicle and it basically makes no noise
- 37:48Speaker 1: THAT i can.
- 37:49Speaker 3: HEAR i.
- 37:49Speaker 4: DON'T i don't hear it unless we open up Those safari.
- 37:52Speaker 4: WINDOWS i don't hear THE. Reofrac, yeah you, Know i'm
- 37:55Speaker 4: so used to my truck hearing THE reofrac all the
- 37:58Speaker 4: time out to be in that vehicle where you just
- 38:01Speaker 4: you don't hear, it it's really nice because you just
- 38:04Speaker 4: you don't know it's up. There whereas Typically i'm very
- 38:08Speaker 4: aware THAT i have a roof, rack and.
- 38:10Speaker 1: For, me IF i can hear, IT i, mean both
- 38:11Speaker 1: of us have a little bit of military related hearing.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Loss so If i'm hearing a roof, rack somebody with
- 38:17Speaker 1: great hearing is going to really hear the roof, rack
- 38:19Speaker 1: and it's nice to not have that fatiguing drone or
- 38:23Speaker 1: whistle or whatever that a lot of.
- 38:24Speaker 4: Times and you, know and just like a clankling water
- 38:28Speaker 4: bottle in the back of the, truck we don't have
- 38:30Speaker 4: to turn the volume up to fix the, roofrack you,
- 38:33Speaker 4: know because that's usually WHAT i do is WHEN i
- 38:36Speaker 4: hear the roof rack making, NOISE i just turn up
- 38:38Speaker 4: the volume Because i'm not going to be able to silence, that,
- 38:42Speaker 4: Ye so turning up the music. Helps so it's nice
- 38:44Speaker 4: that we don't have to crank up the music so
- 38:47Speaker 4: much to drown out that noise.
- 38:49Speaker 1: Totally, Yeah and that rack is really a critical platform
- 38:53Speaker 1: because we really need the extra fuel. Capacity so when
- 38:58Speaker 1: we had the roof rack, specked they spect it for
- 39:02Speaker 1: four of the of the front runner box MOUNTS max
- 39:08Speaker 1: tracks set of Four max tracks plus pins and. Amount
- 39:11Speaker 1: there's a table underneath the, rack which is super useful in.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Camp we've got a twenty liter water can up there
- 39:22Speaker 1: with a spout that you could actually use as a,
- 39:25Speaker 1: shower and then we've got the forty leaders of fuel up.
- 39:29Speaker 1: There so surprisingly when you add all of that, UP i,
- 39:31Speaker 1: mean it's eighty eight pounds in the, rack it's eighty
- 39:35Speaker 1: eight approximately eighty eight pounds maybe a little bit, more
- 39:38Speaker 1: maybe ninety pounds between two Full jerry, cans and then
- 39:42Speaker 1: you've got about another forty pounds a little bit more
- 39:47Speaker 1: with the water, can and then the table's about twenty
- 39:51Speaker 1: eight pounds with the. Brackets then you got about another
- 39:54Speaker 1: thirty pounds with the max, track so you end up
- 39:57Speaker 1: close to two hundred pounds on the.
- 39:59Speaker 3: Rack but fortunately The.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Grenadier has one hundred and fifty kilogram roofload, rating which
- 40:08Speaker 1: is super.
- 40:09Speaker 3: Rare there's not a lot of vehicles that have.
- 40:11Speaker 1: That so we got really lucky BECAUSE i wasn't going
- 40:14Speaker 1: to overload the, vehicle SO i would have had to
- 40:16Speaker 1: come up with a different. Plan and we've only kept
- 40:18Speaker 1: fuel in one of the. Cans it's just like an emergency.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Backup what you don't want is consistent heavyweight on top
- 40:26Speaker 1: of the. Vehicle if there are times that you're, like,
- 40:30Speaker 1: Okay i've got to fill up both fuel, cans but
- 40:32Speaker 1: within a couple hours you can transfer the fuel out
- 40:37Speaker 1: from the, cans so you're really only keeping that heavy
- 40:40Speaker 1: weight up there for a short period of. Time like
- 40:42Speaker 1: if we were to fill both, cans we would start
- 40:45Speaker 1: to empty it out as soon as we, can so
- 40:47Speaker 1: that way we didn't keep that weight up there, persistently
- 40:51Speaker 1: but we were able to keep it underneath the three
- 40:53Speaker 1: hundred and thirty odd pound roofload limit of The. Grenadier
- 40:57Speaker 1: and it's not making any noise and it doesn't feel
- 41:00Speaker 1: like overly top heavy.
- 41:02Speaker 3: From the extra.
- 41:02Speaker 4: Weight, no it.
- 41:03Speaker 3: Doesn't not on the road so.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Much now on the, Trail i'm noticing a little bit
- 41:08Speaker 1: more head tossed because of the.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Weight but that's again that's almost two hundred.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Pounds well not in this, configuration but it could be
- 41:14Speaker 1: as much as two hundred pounds or so if we
- 41:17Speaker 1: filled up all the.
- 41:18Speaker 4: Cans, yeah it's been quite, minimal like on the off
- 41:21Speaker 4: roads and like the dunes and stuff, THAT i don't
- 41:25Speaker 4: really feel it a whole. Lot So i'm glad where
- 41:28Speaker 4: we are at the. MOMENT i, mean even in the
- 41:30Speaker 4: back of The, grenadier we don't have a lot of.
- 41:32Speaker 4: STUFF i mean there is a lot of, stuff but
- 41:36Speaker 4: it's quite. Low you can always see out the, back
- 41:39Speaker 4: so WE'RE i think we did a really good job
- 41:41Speaker 4: of packing and not bringing more than we. NEED i
- 41:45Speaker 4: think we have like a few a handful of items
- 41:48Speaker 4: that you, KNOW i may take back to Joe. Burg but,
- 41:50Speaker 4: yeah other than, that everything we're using at the.
- 41:53Speaker 3: Moment and it helps that we're both motorcycle. Travelers use
- 41:58Speaker 3: of traveling with.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Nothing, YEAH i mean one of the ether bags THAT
- 42:02Speaker 1: i have in, there the little like kind of waterproof.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Duffels that's WHAT i normally have all of my gear
- 42:08Speaker 1: in in the top of a. Motorcycle SO i think
- 42:11Speaker 1: we did a pretty good job of keeping it to a.
- 42:13Speaker 1: Minimum and so we're well undergross vehicle. Weight we got
- 42:18Speaker 1: plenty of extra, capacity so the vehicles not being, overstressed.
- 42:21Speaker 3: And the vehicle's sitting.
- 42:22Speaker 1: Level it's not squatting in the, back which is something
- 42:25Speaker 1: THAT i was concerned about once we got it loaded.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Up but we've got a twenty five liter demetic, fridge
- 42:31Speaker 1: so we went with a smaller. Fridge well it's actually
- 42:33Speaker 1: the smallest fridge that they make that isn't that isn't
- 42:36Speaker 1: a console.
- 42:37Speaker 3: Fridge AND i think it's been. Fine like we've made,
- 42:40Speaker 3: It we've made it.
- 42:41Speaker 1: Work it's easy to go with like the sixty seventy
- 42:43Speaker 1: eighty liter, fridge but all you end up doing is
- 42:47Speaker 1: just filling it. Up so now it's much heavier and
- 42:49Speaker 1: it takes up a lot more. Space but, somehow like
- 42:53Speaker 1: we talk About parkinson's, Theory parkinson's law is that you,
- 42:56Speaker 1: know you filled to the available.
- 42:58Speaker 4: Space we've done, that AND i don't think. THAT i
- 43:02Speaker 4: don't think at all on the trip have we had
- 43:05Speaker 4: to take stuff out of the, Fridge like everything that's
- 43:10Speaker 4: gone in there we've. Used and luckily through this stretch
- 43:13Speaker 4: from you, Know Joe berg up to mass is that
- 43:17Speaker 4: we've we've had meals like we can go, somewhere go
- 43:20Speaker 4: to a, restaurant or go to a, lodge and it's
- 43:23Speaker 4: nice to use those to our advantage while we can
- 43:26Speaker 4: to limit the amount of cooking and cleaning that we
- 43:29Speaker 4: have to, do because at some point in the trip
- 43:31Speaker 4: we'll get to that point where we'll need to cook
- 43:34Speaker 4: and we'll need to have extra. Food so that'll be
- 43:36Speaker 4: something for us to figure out later on in the.
- 43:39Speaker 4: Trip but for, now you, know we just keep, chocolate
- 43:42Speaker 4: the oat, milk some cold, water which is which is,
- 43:46Speaker 4: nice a bit of. Fruit there's some, cheese and you,
- 43:50Speaker 4: KNOW i think there's some like tonic back, There, yeah.
- 43:53Speaker 1: There, is and then we you, know we have some
- 43:55Speaker 1: strawberries on occasion and that kind of. Stuff so we
- 43:58Speaker 1: bought a lot of bananas because they don't need to be.
- 44:00Speaker 1: Refrigerated you, know we buy, eggs they don't need to be.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Refrigerated we buy wraps and other things you, know built
- 44:07Speaker 1: on or you, know beef turkey for those back in
- 44:11Speaker 1: the state.
- 44:12Speaker 3: Time we've eaten a.
- 44:14Speaker 4: Lot of, That yes we.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Have we, have AND i think we've also done a
- 44:17Speaker 1: really good job of being. Healthy so it's easy as.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Travelers And i've done this, myself so this is my
- 44:23Speaker 1: own experience is especially On expedition, SEVEN i just didn't
- 44:28Speaker 1: make the best choices about making sure that we always had,
- 44:32Speaker 1: healthy healthy.
- 44:33Speaker 3: Food so we would do a.
- 44:35Speaker 1: Lot of kind of roadside, stops which not normally a
- 44:39Speaker 1: good choice or the kind of food that you could
- 44:42Speaker 1: buy in a gas station because we were pushing so
- 44:45Speaker 1: hard to make so many. Miles but on this one
- 44:48Speaker 1: we've been so intentional about what we've been. Eating we're
- 44:52Speaker 1: usually only having one meal out and we do some
- 44:55Speaker 1: research ahead of time to make sure it's a higher quality,
- 44:58Speaker 1: establishment and then we make better choices when we do
- 45:02Speaker 1: go To i've eaten a ton of fish on this,
- 45:05Speaker 1: trip And i've avoided bride stuff as much AS i,
- 45:09Speaker 1: can maybe the Occasional french, fry BUT i think you
- 45:13Speaker 1: AND i had we've had One Coca cola the whole.
- 45:15Speaker 4: Trip, Yeah and the only REASON i had that BECAUSE
- 45:18Speaker 4: i wasn't feeling well AND i wanted.
- 45:20Speaker 3: That settler you.
- 45:21Speaker 4: Stomach, yeah and it and it. Helped and that's been. It.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Yeah but in the, vehicle we we bring along like
- 45:28Speaker 1: a high quality IT'S i basically made a mixture for.
- 45:32Speaker 1: Us it's got way protein in, it it has calagen
- 45:34Speaker 1: protein in.
- 45:35Speaker 3: It it has like a.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Combination of different like adaptogenetic, mushrooms lions made and everything
- 45:44Speaker 1: else like. That and then it's got you found this really.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Cool it's like it is a vegan protein sowing sowing.
- 45:53Speaker 4: Freeze.
- 45:54Speaker 3: Superfoods was that the one in the little package Or?
- 45:57Speaker 4: Yeah so they came in the little? Packages so that
- 45:59Speaker 4: was WHAT i get of you when you first came
- 46:00Speaker 4: To Joe. Bird SO i kind of give you a
- 46:02Speaker 4: little bit of smaller. Ones, yeah and they have great,
- 46:07Speaker 4: flavors all natural and they choose very high quality. Ingredients
- 46:12Speaker 4: so that's my.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Favorite tons of super foods in, There chia seeds and everything.
- 46:16Speaker 1: Else so we basically end up with a mixture of
- 46:19Speaker 1: way protein which is super high, quality very bioavailable.
- 46:23Speaker 3: Protein got some local. Locals so they're, SINGING.
- 46:28Speaker 4: I love, It come make up.
- 46:36Speaker 3: Photo that's, cool that's super. Cool, yeah there's such happy
- 46:45Speaker 3: people here In. Mozambique it's just endless, smiles there really.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Is and there's so many reasons and smaller. Here it's
- 46:52Speaker 3: just a beautiful. Place. Beautiful.
- 46:54Speaker 1: Yeah so, yeah it's this combination of really healthy foods
- 46:59Speaker 1: that are in, there halfway half vegan protein with a
- 47:03Speaker 1: bunch of, superfoods some adaptogenetic mushrooms of calagen, powder and that's.
- 47:08Speaker 3: It that's that goes into this protein.
- 47:10Speaker 1: Shake and then if we have access to two hundred
- 47:13Speaker 1: and twenty volt, power then we use the blender you brought,
- 47:17Speaker 1: along and we'll throw in bananas and we'll throw in
- 47:20Speaker 1: these little, packets packets filled with nuts and.
- 47:23Speaker 3: Seeds and.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Some big and stuff like. That we just we just
- 47:28Speaker 1: loaded up full of good. Stuff AND i don't know about,
- 47:31Speaker 1: you BUT i just feel like a champ WHEN i have.
- 47:33Speaker 4: THAT'S i, mean it's just tastes so, delicious and you
- 47:36Speaker 4: know your body is, like, oh that's exactly WHAT i
- 47:39Speaker 4: want and for us like early in the mornings to you,
- 47:43Speaker 4: know get up at, dark we're not really sure where
- 47:46Speaker 4: a breakfast spot's going to, be and we don't really
- 47:49Speaker 4: want to take the time to stop for. Breakfast like
- 47:51Speaker 4: to have those smoothies early in the, morning you, know
- 47:55Speaker 4: you can last for a, good solid couple hours before
- 47:58Speaker 4: you even think about getting. Food so to have those
- 48:01Speaker 4: kind of good nutrients in you early in the day
- 48:04Speaker 4: is super helpful because you, Know i've done it on
- 48:07Speaker 4: trips as, well where you're just eating from restaurant to
- 48:10Speaker 4: restaurant and, eventually like you just GET i always feel quite,
- 48:14Speaker 4: fatigued mired, down and, yeah my body is just trying
- 48:17Speaker 4: to compose. Everything, yeah compost, everything decompose everything or something like. That, yeah, digest, diespose.
- 48:27Speaker 3: COMPOST i think you're doing it.
- 48:28Speaker 4: All, Yeah so the less WORK i can make my, body,
- 48:33Speaker 4: do you, know the better for a trip like, those
- 48:35Speaker 4: because we've had long days and you, know to have
- 48:39Speaker 4: better foods really helps to make the day. Last AND
- 48:44Speaker 4: i feel a lot stronger at the end of the, day.
- 48:46Speaker 3: And THEN i don't feel so tired in the.
- 48:48Speaker 1: MORNING i think if you have a heavy breakfast it's
- 48:50Speaker 1: easy to feel like back kind of mired.
- 48:53Speaker 3: Down so eating, lighter and.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Of course we make coffee every day because that's kind
- 48:57Speaker 1: of a ritual, thing that's just a joy of. Life
- 49:00Speaker 1: so we're either looking for a good coffee shop or
- 49:03Speaker 1: we're making, coffee which we have great coffee in the.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Vehicle so that's been that's been super fun to kind of.
- 49:10Speaker 3: See but it's.
- 49:11Speaker 1: WORKING i feel like that the food that we're eating
- 49:14Speaker 1: is really. Working i've got plenty of it in the,
- 49:17Speaker 1: vehicle SO i, could you, know we could drive for
- 49:19Speaker 1: a month if that happened to get a meal if
- 49:22Speaker 1: we had. To so if you're stuck at a, border
- 49:25Speaker 1: at least you've got really, healthy quality.
- 49:27Speaker 3: Food and Then i've also been including and.
- 49:32Speaker 1: You've recently started to enjoy, this but it's basically. Creatine
- 49:38Speaker 1: and then it's got a bunch of branch chain amino
- 49:40Speaker 1: acids and a couple of other super foody things in, it
- 49:43Speaker 1: and we just make it into a water.
- 49:45Speaker 3: Drink in, FACT i got some right here and it
- 49:47Speaker 3: tastes like. Berries it's.
- 49:49Speaker 4: Delicious LIKE i DON'T i drink coffee, Water and that's
- 49:56Speaker 4: really about. IT i don't drink JUICES i don't. Drink
- 49:59Speaker 4: so to have something like that that, tastes you, know
- 50:04Speaker 4: very good, sugar, yeah quench my. THIRST i.
- 50:07Speaker 1: THINK i think it's a muscle tech is who makes,
- 50:11Speaker 1: it AND i could buy, it AND i was able
- 50:13Speaker 1: to buy it In. Johannesburg and THEN i got another
- 50:16Speaker 1: big bucket because of course every time you buy a
- 50:17Speaker 1: big bucket and it's actually only half full, Stuff SO
- 50:20Speaker 1: i bought another big. Bucket combine them, together so we
- 50:24Speaker 1: got plenty for the trip out to bring some over
- 50:26Speaker 1: and my luggage for the next for the next.
- 50:28Speaker 3: Leg so it is fun.
- 50:30Speaker 1: To talk about food because food is a real experience
- 50:33Speaker 1: of travel and what's having and we haven't excluded ourselves from.
- 50:37Speaker 1: That like we go and experience local cuisine and we
- 50:40Speaker 1: go to the restaurant on the beach and we have
- 50:43Speaker 1: this really healthy meal of fish and rice or. Whatever
- 50:46Speaker 1: so that, way we're not we're not gaining, weight we're
- 50:49Speaker 1: not losing. Weight we feel strong and healthy and our
- 50:53Speaker 1: minds feel, clear so we're not pounding a bunch of.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Sugar but let's talk about sleep a little, bit BECAUSE
- 50:59Speaker 1: i think that that is something that's easily discounted when you're.
- 51:03Speaker 1: Traveling so the way that we chose to travel in
- 51:06Speaker 1: this vehicle was Front runner was very generous and they
- 51:11Speaker 1: actually made this lightweight aluminum frame that has a wood
- 51:16Speaker 1: pop and a hinge so the sleeping platform can be
- 51:21Speaker 1: folded back and over on top of the platform in the,
- 51:25Speaker 1: back so you can use the rear. Seats so we've
- 51:28Speaker 1: got people coming in, family friends or, whatever we can
- 51:31Speaker 1: still travel with.
- 51:32Speaker 3: Them but we've been leaving it in the seat.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Back down and then platform folded over configuration because then
- 51:41Speaker 1: we can put all the gear strapped down low on the,
- 51:45Speaker 1: platform and we weren't really sure how that was going to.
- 51:49Speaker 1: Work we do take everything. Out most of the gear
- 51:53Speaker 1: goes back into the driver's seat and the passenger seat
- 51:56Speaker 1: in the, front so it's. Secure and then we had
- 51:59Speaker 1: the table, out but we could have put it that,
- 52:01Speaker 1: away and then we had the fridge sitting on the,
- 52:03Speaker 1: table but all that stuff can fit on the on
- 52:06Speaker 1: the rack overnight if. Needed and then we would, sleep
- 52:12Speaker 1: so you slept with your head towards the back, doors
- 52:17Speaker 1: and THEN i slept with my head facing the driver's,
- 52:20Speaker 1: seat which is good because we're both bigger, guys so
- 52:24Speaker 1: it gives that shoulder space and then as long as
- 52:26Speaker 1: you're just mindful of not kicking the person in the.
- 52:28Speaker 5: Face, YEAH i don't think anyone got the but and
- 52:32Speaker 5: then we and then we so we're sleeping on these
- 52:35Speaker 5: flat load, platforms and then what are we using to sleep?
- 52:38Speaker 3: On and in what you recommended?
- 52:41Speaker 4: This, yeah the The Melvine moon. Bedrolls SO i GOT
- 52:45Speaker 4: i got mine From james At Melvine moon about. IT
- 52:47Speaker 4: i think it was about a year ago and he
- 52:51Speaker 4: actually made mind custom to fit my length Because, i'm you,
- 52:56Speaker 4: know two meters. Tall so the bet Roll i've got
- 52:58Speaker 4: is extremely Comfort and there's also WHAT i love about
- 53:02Speaker 4: is that there's actually a lot of material that you
- 53:04Speaker 4: kind of price throw over.
- 53:06Speaker 3: Yourself can use it like a. Blanket, yeah you can
- 53:08Speaker 3: use it as a.
- 53:08Speaker 4: Blanket you can actually sit up like a lot of
- 53:10Speaker 4: times When i'll, Work i'll kind of sit up with
- 53:13Speaker 4: my knees, up and there's still extra material to it's
- 53:17Speaker 4: not too, tight so you, know if you want to
- 53:19Speaker 4: put sleeping bags and blankets in, there you've got plenty of.
- 53:22Speaker 4: Space and for, ME i you, know after sleeping on,
- 53:26Speaker 4: those you, know ten fifteen, times NOW i Know i'm
- 53:30Speaker 4: going to get a good night's, Sleep LIKE i know
- 53:31Speaker 4: that comfort And i'm used to, it and i feel
- 53:34Speaker 4: Like i'm back home When i'm in that.
- 53:36Speaker 1: Bedroll and the advantage too is that it is not
- 53:40Speaker 1: an inflatable. Mattress, yeah so there's nothing to, fail nothing
- 53:44Speaker 1: to repair for puncture or anything else like.
- 53:47Speaker 3: That and then it is very roomy, too WHICH i
- 53:52Speaker 3: WHICH i.
- 53:52Speaker 1: Like but then the cover the outside of, it so
- 53:55Speaker 1: the bottom of it is like a heavy duty reinforced almost. Rubber,
- 53:59Speaker 1: yeah you can just rush the sand or dirt or
- 54:02Speaker 1: whatever off. It but then the sides and the top
- 54:05Speaker 1: basically the whole flap that comes over is wax, canvas
- 54:09Speaker 1: like a heavy duty wax. Canvas So i've actually got
- 54:13Speaker 1: the vehicle set up, now and that's How i'll continue
- 54:16Speaker 1: on on the.
- 54:16Speaker 3: Trip Is i'm just gonna.
- 54:17Speaker 1: Leave the bedroll out and then put things on top
- 54:20Speaker 1: of it Because i'm not worried about puncturing a. Mattress
- 54:24Speaker 1: i'm not worried about rubbing a hole in that heavy duty.
- 54:27Speaker 3: Canvas it's.
- 54:28Speaker 1: Bomber and then even like we had a little bit
- 54:31Speaker 1: of water spill inside there today and it pulled up
- 54:35Speaker 1: like it did not leak into the, bed which was another.
- 54:38Speaker 1: Surprise So i've always been a big fan of. BEDROLLS
- 54:42Speaker 1: i mean they've been used, forever literally, forever people have
- 54:45Speaker 1: been using bedrolls and there's a reason for.
- 54:47Speaker 3: It SO i really like.
- 54:49Speaker 1: Those and Then i'm, actually this is kind of a
- 54:51Speaker 1: fun little, anecdote But i've always really liked The nemo equipment.
- 54:55Speaker 1: Stuff they're tense and they're sleeping, pads And i've used
- 54:58Speaker 1: them their.
- 54:58Speaker 3: Stuff around the. World BUT i have A nemo.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Pillow it's an inflatable pillow with a little bit of
- 55:04Speaker 1: memory foam and like this very, soft kind of flocked
- 55:08Speaker 1: cover on, it AND i have that is the same
- 55:12Speaker 1: pillow That i've been using SINCE i think probably two
- 55:17Speaker 1: thy and.
- 55:18Speaker 4: Ten.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Wow so it's the same pillow That i've used on
- 55:22Speaker 1: all of my. Trips, yeah and just wash it at
- 55:25Speaker 1: the end of the. Trip but the fact that it
- 55:28Speaker 1: has Been i've used it sleeping on, Planes i'm using
- 55:31Speaker 1: it on this.
- 55:31Speaker 3: Trip it's the same. Pillow so when you buy a
- 55:34Speaker 3: good piece of, gear and you, Know nemo's not an
- 55:36Speaker 3: advertiser and a sponsor or anything like, that it's just
- 55:40Speaker 3: a really great piece of.
- 55:41Speaker 1: Kit in These nemo, pillows And i've used them around
- 55:44Speaker 1: the world and they tuck into a little ball when
- 55:47Speaker 1: you want to put them. Up so it's been fun
- 55:50Speaker 1: to like have that little piece of comfort that's been
- 55:53Speaker 1: with me on all seven.
- 55:55Speaker 4: Content, yeah you've got to have that. Comfort and you
- 55:58Speaker 4: know the size of the bed, roll you, know when
- 56:00Speaker 4: you got yours the other, day it was quite a
- 56:03Speaker 4: narrow compared to, mine which had a sleeping bag and
- 56:06Speaker 4: a blanket in. It you, KNOW i looked at that
- 56:09Speaker 4: bedroll at first seeing all that. Size, man maybe it's too.
- 56:12Speaker 4: Big maybe we shouldn't take, These but to have comfort
- 56:16Speaker 4: and know you're going to good night's, sleep it's worth.
- 56:19Speaker 4: It it's worth. It and one of the things THAT
- 56:21Speaker 4: i actually don't bring on trips as a. Pillow you,
- 56:25Speaker 4: KNOW i brought a little neck, pillow BUT i brought
- 56:27Speaker 4: it like kind of last. Minute so that's one Thing
- 56:31Speaker 4: i've had on my list THAT i need to get
- 56:34Speaker 4: is actually a good travel.
- 56:35Speaker 3: Pillow we need to get you A nemo Pill.
- 56:37Speaker 4: Yeah it sounds LIKE i need to get A nemo.
- 56:38Speaker 4: PILLOW i don't know IF i can find the one
- 56:40Speaker 4: from fifteen years thirteen years, ago but.
- 56:42Speaker 3: We'll find, It i'll bring it with me the next,
- 56:44Speaker 3: trip the next.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Clig, yeah so sleep is really, key and then we've
- 56:49Speaker 1: both been paying close attention to our sleep. Scores so
- 56:55Speaker 1: we're getting in a little bit of the weeds, here
- 56:56Speaker 1: BUT i think it's made such a. Difference so we're
- 56:59Speaker 1: both run garment. Watches apple watch will do the same,
- 57:03Speaker 1: Thing samsung, Watches android watches will do that, too and
- 57:08Speaker 1: they can track your. Sleep so in the, morning you,
- 57:13Speaker 1: know we'll get up and we'll evaluate how our sleep
- 57:16Speaker 1: was from the night. Before and it's part of a
- 57:18Speaker 1: communication point between the two of, us so that way
- 57:21Speaker 1: we can be paying. Attention we could be checking in
- 57:23Speaker 1: on each other and how we're. Doing and that's WHY
- 57:25Speaker 1: i ask you about your sleep, score because the foundation
- 57:29Speaker 1: of being a healthy traveler starts with, sleep and then
- 57:32Speaker 1: it moves on to, diet and it moves on to,
- 57:34Speaker 1: movement and it moves on to other things, community good
- 57:37Speaker 1: communication and all of. That but it really does, start
- 57:41Speaker 1: just like in, life just like in, work just like an,
- 57:44Speaker 1: exercise it starts with the foundation of great.
- 57:46Speaker 3: Sleep and we've really paid attention to.
- 57:49Speaker 1: It AND i know that both of us have noticed
- 57:52Speaker 1: that when we're not, sleeping, well it's really affecting. Us
- 57:56Speaker 1: and so we've been we've been mindful, of like don't
- 57:59Speaker 1: have a cocktail too late in the, day don't eat
- 58:02Speaker 1: it's going to affect your deep. Sleep like that's one
- 58:05Speaker 1: of the one one of the THINGS i notice that
- 58:07Speaker 1: you've changed is not eating.
- 58:08Speaker 3: LATE i kept encourage, you, like try, it let's just try.
- 58:11Speaker 1: It night eating too late and if you're if you're
- 58:14Speaker 1: kind of wrapped up, two, three four hours before you
- 58:18Speaker 1: go to bed with eating and you're not, snacking and
- 58:20Speaker 1: the quality of your sleep proves so.
- 58:22Speaker 4: Much you. Know that's that's been a huge change for
- 58:25Speaker 4: me during this, trip is not eating. Late and there's
- 58:29Speaker 4: been times where we don't eat. Dinner, yeah and that's
- 58:32Speaker 4: very new to. Me WHERE i always have you, know
- 58:36Speaker 4: i may have miss, breakfast But i'm going to get
- 58:38Speaker 4: a lunch And i'm going to get a dinner every.
- 58:40Speaker 4: Day and it's been really nice to know that on
- 58:45Speaker 4: these long, days you know where we may get, somewhere
- 58:48Speaker 4: we may arrive somewhere at seven point, THIRTY i think
- 58:51Speaker 4: was one of our later. NIGHTS i do not want
- 58:53Speaker 4: to eat BECAUSE i want to get to sleep as
- 58:56Speaker 4: soon AS i. Can BECAUSE i know Tomorrow i'm waking
- 58:58Speaker 4: up at four o'clock and THEN i need to get
- 59:00Speaker 4: as much sleep AS i, can.
- 59:02Speaker 3: So you naturally wake up at four.
- 59:04Speaker 4: Thirty, yeah, Yeah and that's like for, ME i know
- 59:07Speaker 4: that the EARLIER i get to, bed the better Off
- 59:10Speaker 4: i'm going to be the next day Because i'm getting
- 59:14Speaker 4: up early no matter. What and so you, know you
- 59:16Speaker 4: were chatting earlier about sleep, score AND i think you,
- 59:20Speaker 4: know when we're each kind of sharing how well we,
- 59:23Speaker 4: slept we kind of know what to expect from that
- 59:25Speaker 4: partner that. Day whereas you, KNOW i was also sick
- 59:29Speaker 4: for a good portion of the. Trip i'm really struggling
- 59:32Speaker 4: to get good, Sleep so you know that you may
- 59:34Speaker 4: have to pick up a bit of my. Slack and
- 59:36Speaker 4: that's okay because it's a long trip ahead of, us
- 59:40Speaker 4: and we know that people are going to get. Sick,
- 59:42Speaker 4: yeah part of the. Deal it's going to be your.
- 59:43Speaker 4: Turn maybe at some Point i'm going to have to pick.
- 59:46Speaker 4: Up and you, know it's been also nice to know.
- 59:50Speaker 4: That you, know there's been, times especially the other, day
- 59:54Speaker 4: WHERE i was, like, Man i'm really getting, tired AND i, said, Hey, scott,
- 59:57Speaker 4: like can you drive? Now Because i'm, tied and that's
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: also been a huge adjustment for me on this, trip
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: where Typically i'm the one driving leading trips or you,
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: know driving my wife on a, trip AND i like
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: to drive the whole time and to, know like this
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: is this is your trip That i'm supporting. On it's
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: been really nice change for me to just sit in
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: the passenger seat and be a good co, pilot you.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: Know And i've really enjoyed that Because i've also seen
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: in the past what makes a good co pilot for,
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: me you, know tips and things that they could do
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: to help, me and that's, navigation it's finding, lunch it's
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: maybe answering messages and things like, that and so those
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: are things That i've taken into. Consideration when you're, driving
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: is to you, know help you out as much as you.
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: Can what do you need in the? Back you, know
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: where do you want to? Go i'll get the, map
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: or do you need your? Phone i'll do all that
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: stuff so that you just focus on. Driving and it
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: just makes the trip a whole lot safer.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Way to, yeah because i, mean if if it's as
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: simple as just looking at where the next turn is or,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: Something i'll do.
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: That but for the most.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Part if the phone requires anything, ELSE i just hand
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: it to.
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: You you, know the passport password to my, phone.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Do and you you get in there and you check
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: On google or, whatever or you change the book that.
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: We're sinking car play that's, Right, yeah, EXACTLY i know
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: the car play. Secrets that's.
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: Right so then, yeah because we're moving back and forth
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: between devices and everything. Else so it's really good to
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: remember as the, driver especially when you're outside of like
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: four lane divided highway like you have got to.
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: Be your only job is.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: To be piloting that vehicle safely so that you and
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: the other people in that, car many times it's your,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: family can arrive. SAFELY i just cannot speak more fervently
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: about the fact that do not be checking your phone
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: while you're driving overland like.
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: That you're in a big, vehicle heavy.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: Vehicle and as we've seen In South africa and In,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: mozambique there is anything you can conceive on the road
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: is on the. Road that's human, beings, drunk human beings
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: at night not wearing bright or light clothing that you
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: can see, them or there's, animals donkeys', wildlife gigantic, potholes
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: vehicles with one headlight that look like a, motorcycle but
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: it's really a gigantic semi coming at. You so we've
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: seen it. All and the driver's only responsibility is. Driving
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: and then the second responsibility is if you're feeling, tired
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: you communicate that immediately to your code. Driver if you
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: don't have a code, driver pull, off find a safe
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: foot space that could be in a gas station parking,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: lot and take a little. Nap and we've both done
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: a really good job of. That and this is how
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: you know it's time to swap is that you find
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: yourself doing like your head, scratching or you're stretching where
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: you're taking, big big, breaths and you can watch your
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: driver and see those, Tells but is it the first
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: time that you feel like that where you're just almost
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: feeling the edge of like that sleep pressure. Building stop
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: immediately and swap out BECAUSE i.
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: Noticed you, know there's a lot of times WHERE i
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: do long trips AND i know THAT i can push
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: past those sort of yawning. Phases i'll have a, Coffee
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: i'll start. SNACKING i know THAT i can do, that
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: BUT i KNOW i pay for it later WHENEVER i
- 1:03:48Speaker 4: get to my. Accommodation you, know there's a lot of
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: times WHERE i don't have the luxury to you, know
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: stop for like a long time AND i need to get.
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: Somewhere but on this, TRIP i, can you, KNOW i
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: can say, like, Okay i'm getting, tired and it's okay
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: for me to get in the passenger seat because then
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: at least, later IF i need to, Drive i'll be fully.
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: Rested you. Know like the other day WE i, said,
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: LOOK i THINK i need to go lay. Down so
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: we moved everything, over had the one bedroll, out AND
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: i laid in the back of the truck and took a.
- 1:04:22Speaker 4: Nap and that actually allowed me later that day to, say, Hey,
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: Scott i'm getting antsy back. HERE i feel left, out you,
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: KNOW i feel Like i'm missing. You you. KNOW i
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: ALSO i feel pretty Good i'll, Drive and SO i.
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: Did and so that was.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: You, experience our first traffic. Stop, yeah the from THE i,
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: did like hiding in the roll in the.
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: Back, YEAH i got sneaky iPhone pics of you paying
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: your fine and getting your seat and. Everything, yeah that was,
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: great fair, ENOUGH.
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: I MEAN i was.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: Barely it was a it was an unmarked sixty kilometer
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: in hour. Zone there was no speed sign said, that
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: AND i was doing sixty seven sixty eight kilometers an
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: hour in a sixty which is so. SLOW i was
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: driving so. Slow and but you, know it's whatever paid the.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: FINE i think it ended up being about fifteen bucks
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: or something that they actually gave me a proper receipt
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: and in the log book and took down all my.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Information and you, know so at LEAST i didn't feel
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: LIKE i was bribing, anybody but you, know you never.
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: Know but, REGARDLESS i was able to pay the. Fine
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: we were able to be back on our.
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: Way was pretty. Good, well let's talk about. Navigation there's
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: so much to talk.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: About we're at an hour at fifteen, minutes which is,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: fine go for a little bit. Longer but with, navigation
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: because it's such a thing that people worry, about is,
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: navigating and there's some really great tools for the traveler
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: for making good navigation. Decisions, now specifically when it comes To,
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: africa they're the very high water mark of.
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: Navigation always needs to be tracks For.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: AFRICA i have not found a single substitute for. That
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: there are complementary technologies and complimentary mapping, solutions but without
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: a doubt you want tracks For, africa and you want
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: tracks For africa on your garment, device because they don't
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: offer it for any other any OTHER gps solution That
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: i'm aware. Of but if you have a, garment we
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: have a Garment overlander or garment, tread and you download
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: the map files from the, internet put it onto a
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: MICRO sd.
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: Card you just stick it in the MICRO sd card.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: Slot format it the right, way and the next time
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: you start your unit, up you're running tracks For. Africa
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: and it shows you, know hidden speed, bumps it shows police,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: checkpoints it shows. Bridges we saw lands on the, yeah,
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: yeah we saw land, mines and it shows different you,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: know degrees of tracks and difficulty and some little notes
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: cartographers notes in.
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: There it shows accommodation.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: And fuel and and and other resources within that that
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: and then the other really thing nice thing THAT i
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: like about it is it allows turn for, turn turn
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: by turn navigation using the, garment so we can at
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: least get a sense of the route and of course verify.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: It but then we also on the, garment which is
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: a fairly recent addition the last couple of, years as
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: they ADDED I.
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: Overlander, yeah that's been that's been very helpful for us
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: to you, know find little accommodation spots along the. Way you,
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: KNOW i actually just DOWNLOADED I overlander about a month,
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: ago a month before the, trip and that was from
- 1:07:47Speaker 4: listening to one of your. Podcasts THAT'S i was, Like,
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: okay let me actually check this. Out and it's super.
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: Simple even When i'm, Offline i'm able to look at
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: the map and it's very. Simple there's not a whole
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: lot of thank, goodness you, know day in. There it's
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: just a, map pens and. Text and it's perfect because
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: you can just zoom out and kind of see if
- 1:08:08Speaker 4: there are spots along your route and you're, like, okay,
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: cool we've got some. Options and then you go Into.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: Ioverlander then you may go Into google and just cross
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: reference and kind of see where different towns. Are and
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: so we've we've done a really good job of kind
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: of having a lot of redundancy for mapping that we
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: haven't gotten, lost we've always had a place to, stay
- 1:08:28Speaker 4: and we've actually always booked our accommodation the. Day.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah And ioverlander IS i think it just gives
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: you a lot of confidence and there's a lot of
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: user curated information on. There there's not a lot of
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: that information in the, garment but it does at least
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: let you SEARCH I overlander by some of the data.
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: Points but if you.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: Have ioverlander on your, phone then you can see the,
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: reviews you can see the notes from other. Travelers you
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: can see how long ago that most recent note was in,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: there if there's updates to the. Information and for, me
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: when we were looking at the likelihood of having to
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: shift from driving up The east Of africa to driving
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: up The west Of, AFRICA i just, like one, NIGHT
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: i was like feeling just to be, CANDID i was
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: feeling like a little bit of anxiety of, LIKE i
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: don't know much about this. Route all of my research
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: has been done on The eastern, route AND i felt
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: really confident BECAUSE i researched it, well but it was.
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: This whole Unknown West.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: Africa and SO i start digging in ON I overlander
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: and it's it's endless the places to stay and there's
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: so much good. INFORMATION i, mean it's just a very empowering.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: Tool And i'm just incredibly impressed by the. APP i,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: mean we have no association with it other THAN i
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: am a huge. Fan i'm just LIKE i have such
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: respect for what they've done and.
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: It is a powerful.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Tool and then there's some Good facebook groups that you
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: can also get in onto that active travelers In, africa
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: and there's even Some WhatsApp groups that you can join
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: other active travelers in the region that you're. In and
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: THEN i also Run gaya on my phone And i'm
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: recording a secondary track BECAUSE i always love to have
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: my tracks and they're good to also if you need
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: a reverse course and get back to where you were
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: at if you're in a really challenging navigation, AREA i
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: like to have a backup of my. Track and then
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: you have map layers. There so the one thing that
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: you can do In gaya is bring UP sat maps
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: and SOMETIMES sat maps tell you a bigger picture than
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: what you can just.
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: See what are the what do these dunes look like?
- 1:10:48Speaker 4: Like it says there's dunes, here you can sleep on the. Dune, okay,
- 1:10:51Speaker 4: well let's maybe look on the satellite to just kind
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: of get an. Idea and that's huge when you can
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: actually look on to get an idea as to you
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: know where you might be, staying and you, know especially
- 1:11:05Speaker 4: as a, photographer you know where you may want to
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: get some, shots you. Know that's kind of WHAT i
- 1:11:10Speaker 4: look into is you, know what does the location look
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: like from the, satellite and THEN i kind of know
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: what to expect in the form of photography from that, location,
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: absolutely and then.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: We can build out our shot list for the. Day
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: and THEN i also have tracks For africa on my.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: Phone the app is nowhere near as powerful as the
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: these very detailed maps that you put down on the.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: Garment it's more just like a reference map or a. Backup,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: yeah so it's it's a way for me to have a.
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: Backup you can't do turn by turn, navigation you can't
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: record a track on. It it's literally just your kind
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: of looking at the map and it shows you where
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: you are on the. Map but it doesn't do much
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: much beyond. THAT i think it's still worth having for some.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: REDUNDANCY i think that that's. Important so that's what we're
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: using for.
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: Navigation and Then google offline. Maps, yeah that's a Huge
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: that's been a huge thing for me traveling through other
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: countries over the, years is that IF i Know i'm
- 1:12:06Speaker 4: going outside Of South, AFRICA i download those offline maps
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: because at LEAST i can still navigate. Through you, KNOW
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: i do find there's like a lack of data to
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: like really zoom in and LIKE i want more of
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: that satellite image from. It but at LEAST i can
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: still search like restaurants and different spots and then navigate.
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: Throughout you, Know i've had that for all of mozambikau
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: is offline, maps and at least Then i've got an
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: idea as to where we kind of need to go
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: if we want to change directions. There that's been a
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: good reference POINT i, have.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: It, is and then the last point of navigation THAT
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: i have is actually the watch That i'm wearing has
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: built in. Maps and If i'm out on a hike
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: and my phone stops, WORKING i can at least as
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: long super helpful as long As i'm recording a hiking.
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: Track as long As i'm recording a, hike THEN i
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: can actually look at the map move my way back
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: through that breadcrumbe trail to get back to whereever we're.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: Starting we also have paper maps along with, us so
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: we have some. Redundancy we have a compass in the,
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: vehicle AND i have a mechanical and satic compass with
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: me just in case for some reason THE gps systems go.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: Down it's important to remember that there's a thing called selective.
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: Availability the, government THE us government can shut down the
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: satellite consolation FOR gps if they want, to or at
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: least they can greatly reduce the accuracy of it if
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: they chose. To so we always need to be aware
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: of the fact that things like that can. Happen solar
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: storms and other things can affect those electronic, Devices so
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: we need to have a way to navigate if those
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: things were to go.
- 1:13:50Speaker 6: Down built buy off roaders for off roaders on X,
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: roads Route builder provides a new solution to your adventure
- 1:13:59Speaker 6: planning with a snap to.
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: Functionality just draw a line.
- 1:14:03Speaker 7: With their cursor and the route will automatically snap to
- 1:14:06Speaker 7: the road or. Trail hit save and the route will
- 1:14:09Speaker 7: sink to your mobile. Device now you're ready to hit the.
- 1:14:14Speaker 7: Trails go farther with bonex off roads Route.
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: Builders, yeah so we you, know we've covered. Navigation the
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: vehicle has a, winch we have a full recovery.
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: Kit we got some.
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: Tools In South, africa there's a you, know it's not
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: as expensive as like a snap. On it's a premium
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: tool company Called tang. Tools, Yeah tang. Tools, yeah we
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: picked up Some tang. Tools they're very. Good They're swiss
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: or something like. THAT i don't remember what they, were
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: Some EUROPE i.
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: THINK i think it Was. Swiss so we got those
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: From harley who's the import different tank tools In South.
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: Africa and he's a great. GUY i mean remember we
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: went to his workshop that was like an engineering shop.
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: Totally he had like an Old series TWO i, think and.
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: Some two thousand and two, BMW's some cool.
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: Motorcycles that was super cool, guy and he gave us
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: a little discount which helped us out as. Travelers and
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: we picked up the basic tools that we needed to
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: be able to perform repairs on the. Vehicle but then
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: we pulled, it all of those tools out of the big.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: Box we put it into this heavy duty canvas tool
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: bag that we got From james At melville And moon
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: and so we it's a.
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: Third of the.
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: SPACE i bet it's a third of the. Space it
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: saved us so much, space it really. Did we didn't
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: we didn't need that. BOX i, mean it's nice to
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: have everything in that, box but not to have it
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: in a bag that's you, know is already kind of.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: There, yeah it's and it's a heavy duty, bag so
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: it's not going to get torn. Up and then we
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: made the decision to move all the recovery equipment behind
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: the passenger, seat so all the, straps pulley, blocks, shackles
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: all those heavy items is behind the passenger, seat down
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: in the foot, well so centered in the vehicle download
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: to move that weight. Forward and then behind the driver's
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: seat is all the. Tools so we've got, compressor we've
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: got a full tool, set we've got electric multimeter and
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: a bunch of bunch of electronic components that we. Need
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: and then the spares are down low underneath the, platform
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: pushed all the way forward against the back, seats so
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: we were able to do a good job of getting
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: that weight down low and as far forward as we.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: Can we've got max tracks for. Recovery we have four
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: of those on the. Top they've just saved my bacon
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: so many times there's no, way and we almost needed.
- 1:16:41Speaker 4: It, YEAH i wasn't, sure you, know the other, Day
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: LIKE i wasn't sure when you got stuck in the.
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: Sand tell the. Story, yeah so so WE i think
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: we were headed to the dunes that day and THEN
- 1:16:55Speaker 4: i kind of filmed you riding up through the dunes
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: and then you just found this open area along the
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: beach and just started sending. It and that was so
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: great because you, know that was our first time in
- 1:17:06Speaker 4: the sand and we had been talking about driving in
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: the sand for so, long and you you, know we
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: didn't deflate the tires at. All we were still RUNNING
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: i think FORTY i, think and there was a SHOT
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: i was actually waiting to get to get a little
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: bit of sun, blur and then you ended up getting
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: stuck AND i was, like, DAMN i missed, it and
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: and you looked you didn't look too, buried but you were,
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: buried AND i actually knew to. Quit, yeah, Yeah and
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: that was also VERY i was very aware of that
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: that you didn't try digging out or you're, like you
- 1:17:44Speaker 4: know what time to air? Down AND i actually wasn't
- 1:17:47Speaker 4: sure which one you're going to go for. FIRST i
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: didn't know if you're going to go for the max
- 1:17:51Speaker 4: tracks or if you're going to deflate the. Tires and
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: my guess was that you were going to deflate the,
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: tires and that's what you, did and you, know you
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: got out there to, flate and that for me has
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: been like the biggest eye opener of my life because
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: TYPICALLY i carry an air compressor on our trips and
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: we do tires one by one and it is so.
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: Slow so to watch you just hook up the, tires
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: they go quick and it goes out and you you
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: did that and as soon as.
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: You tear down to a teen psi front, rear and.
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: As soon as you did, THAT i stepped back started
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: filming and you just slowly kind of got that stand
- 1:18:32Speaker 4: to build up and then you just kind of rolled
- 1:18:35Speaker 4: over it and then out you, went just with like.
- 1:18:37Speaker 4: Grace it. Was it was beautiful to.
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: Watch, yeah people when they because they get nervous when
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: they get. Stuck, yeah then once they hear, down once
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: they get their tires are, down then they give it
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: too much gas and then they just keep digging. In
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: but if you go very very, slow like low, range
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: lock the differentials and then just barely turning the, tires
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: it actually starts to pull some of the sand up and,
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: underneath which helps you begin to lift the chassis. Up
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: and as soon as the chassis's, clear then that's when
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: the vehicle really comes. Out and the max tracks would
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: have absolutely worked to get us. Out but we still
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: would have needed to air down exactly that because we
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: just to get out the next. Day we would have
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: had to tear it. Down so for, ME i KNEW
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: i had to air down either.
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: Way, start so.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: START i started. There so it's a good and it's
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: a good idea to start by airing. Down and the
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: other thing is, too is you just you don't play
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: around at high pressures unless you have a lot of
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: confidence around the vehicle when you're close to the water,
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: line because you just you don't want any chance that
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: you're going to be stuck within the tide. Zone so
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: we were well above the tide zone when we got,
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: Stuck so it just makes it so much. Safer and
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: then once you gain some, CONFIDENCE i hadn't, DRIVEN i
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: hadn't driven The grenadier in deep sand, yet SO i
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: wanted to have confidence in the vehicle before we went
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: and played along the water.
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: Line and of course we did the next. One it
- 1:20:00Speaker 3: was just.
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: Beautiful and then we got to really play in the,
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: dune so then we were you, know high marking the
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: vehicle and driving.
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: It we just had so much, fun so super.
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: Fun that was. Great it was just so nice to
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: like have that fresh dune and get that early morning.
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: Sun it was some beautiful. Picks it.
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: Was and that's the fun thing about sand or snow
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: is that you can you can kind of be as
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: much Of aholian as you want to. Be and the
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: next time that the wind, blows which is right, now
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: because the wind was, howling so like if you came
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: back to that same spot that, afternoon the tracks would.
- 1:20:34Speaker 3: Have all been.
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: Gone.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: Yeah, Absolutely so you, know you can have some fun
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: and you're not doing any. Damage it was not a
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: vegetated dune and we weren't driving over any.
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: Vegetation it was just pure.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: Sand and the next time that the wind, blows and
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: we were also well above the water, line so if
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: there was any turtles that were doing laying eggs or,
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: whatever we were way above that so there would be you,
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: know no Damage chalco to any of the wildlife in the.
- 1:21:02Speaker 3: Area so we were just able to have some. Fun,
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: yeah we. Did we.
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: Did we were able to have some. Fun oh, man
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: there's so much to talk. About we you, know the
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: border crossing Into mozambique was so.
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: Easy the people were so.
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: Sweet it was the first time THAT i imported the
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: vehicle on the temporary import instead of the instead of
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: the Carne AND i wasn't sure that was going to
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: go Because i'm An american with An american. Passport it's
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: A uk vehicle registered To. Anios, yeah so.
- 1:21:31Speaker 4: A lot of a lot of going against. You but
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: it was all. Good it was all, good all.
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: Good it was all. Good and they were smiles and they.
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: Were very friendly at that border, post very.
- 1:21:41Speaker 3: Sweet.
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: Yeah you, know the one GUY i kind of, LIKE
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: i kind of judge for a, minute like we walk
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: in and he's just on his. Phone we were told
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: to go into this office and he's just on his
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: phone and we're just. Standing if we were probably standing
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: for about ten to fifteen, MINUTES i.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: Think we thought at first he was talking to his
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: girlfriend or. Something, yeah it was a heated com.
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: Yeah and then he said to, us so if you sit,
- 1:22:02Speaker 4: Down i'm on the phone with my. Mom and they were, like,
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: okay two, humans three humans, here it's, Cool like we're
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: not in a. Rush we're in a rush to get.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: Anywhere and uh and then when we got when he
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: got off the, phone he was really like he wasn't
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: because a lot of times those guys when they're having
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: an eating, conversation then they take it out on. You,
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: YEAH i was worried about, that and he didn't like
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: he was, like he was, like very humble about. It
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: AND i told, Him i'm, like you, Know he's, Like i'm,
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: sorry And i'm, like, hey it's your. Mom she's super
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: more important than we. Are SO i think it kind
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: of diffused the. Situation, absolutely it was a really easy.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: Process and then Moz enbique has just been a total.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: Joy and now we're In tofu and, yeah we're catching
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: up on some work and some content and finally and
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: then you're going to fly out On, tuesday and Then
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: i'm going to continue on Through malawi and Into tanzania
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: and then stage the vehicle In, darsal And i'm going
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: to fly back to THE us for a little. Bit
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: i've got some projects THAT i have to, do and
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: Then i'll fly back and pick it up and we'll
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: continue our journey and continue our. Conversation, joe is there
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: any other pieces of wisdom or insights or fun stories
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: that you want to share so far from the trip
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: as we wrap things.
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: Up two, things two things THAT i think have stuck
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: out the most for. Me one would Be i'll start
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: with the kids In. MOZAMBIAQUE i don't know how many
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: TIMES i brought that up the other day when we
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: were in the, car was, that you, know this whole
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: stretch basically North i'm A putu To. Tofu there were
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: so many people walking along the road and all these
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: kids just out running and, playing and they were all
- 1:23:49Speaker 4: coming back from. School they're all, smiling they're all, playing
- 1:23:54Speaker 4: and they just were having such a good. Time and
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: it was the, smartphone none of. Them it was so
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: nice and like just so. REFRESHING i remember just my
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: eyes were boggling outside the car and just amazement and wonderful. People,
- 1:24:09Speaker 4: yeah like IT'S i said it as, well is that
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: it reminded me a lot Of, india this kind of
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: stretch Of, mozambique and just that people seem so. Friendly
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: And i'd heard a lot of negative comments about this
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: section Of mozambique from people back In South, africa and
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: it was nice to see it and witness it for
- 1:24:32Speaker 4: myself and to know that it's a safe place to.
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: Travel it's an amazing. Place you can stay anywhere and
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: get super. Cheap and based on what the locals told
- 1:24:42Speaker 4: us last, night is that you can pretty much break down,
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: anywhere and these people will give you the best meal
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: that they've got to give you that. Night and so
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: that's been really nice and. Refreshing AND i know That
- 1:24:55Speaker 4: i'll be back Here mozambique and it's likely be back
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: here in Tofu, por back here lodge shooting some photos for.
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: Them so that's the one. Thing the second thing was
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: The cedarburg going To ozzie's. Place So ozzy is a
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: friend of mine WHO i met probably five or six
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: years ago In Cape Town. Characters he's so funny and
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: he's he's he's such a, storyteller he's such a. Character
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: he's A turkish. Guy you, KNOW i don't know Many turkish,
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: guys so it's been nice to. SEE i guess what
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: A turkish guy might act, LIKE i don't. Know and great.
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: Salesman, yeah yeah he.
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: Is he's a good so he. Is so he owns
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: a company Called, yeah so he owns a company Called
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: Travel designer and they do like, bespoke high end experiences
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: like in The Cape town. Area and years AGO i
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: remember him reaching out to me, Saying, hey we are
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: opening up this location in The cedarbird called And i'd
- 1:26:00Speaker 4: love for you to come. Out And ozzie AND i
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: have been chatting over the years about working together at some,
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: point AND i know at some point we, Will AND
- 1:26:09Speaker 4: i knew that at some POINT i would go To.
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: BACKRONS i just didn't know when it would work. Out
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: so once we had travel plans that we were actually
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: hitting the road and we're heading To Cape, TOWN i
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: THINK i put out a post on social media and
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: that Day ozzie reached down and, Said, hey what are
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: your plans For Cape? Town, SAID i actually don't have,
- 1:26:29Speaker 4: Any LIKE i am doing the plans, Today like what
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: you got in? Money he's, like, dude now what does
- 1:26:35Speaker 4: he say? That? Oh my, man my, man you need
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: to come To. Backrons i'll open it. Up you, guys,
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: Come we'll go To. BACKRAANS i was, like, okay. Cool
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: so we chatted about it and off to The cedarburgh we,
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: went and you, know to get To ozzie's, place we
- 1:26:52Speaker 4: went up Through voopaital and Through woopaitol was this amazing
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: mountain pass THAT i did not know was.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: Incredible it was one of the one of the top
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: overland Routes i've.
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: Done, yeah that was a huge surprise to both of
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: us At toe and.
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: Those little villages really high on the, mountains The River Cross.
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: Limes. Yeah so then we Met ozzy At Justin bonello's
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: place and he was hosting a group there and they, said,
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: Look akrons is another fourteen k's that way over the
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: mountain and it's an off road route AND i think
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: it took us over an hour to do those Fourteen.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: It's a four low by clearance off road route to
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: get to this. Lodge AND i would call it like
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: an eco lodge for. Sure it. Is it's more expensive
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: because it's so. Inaccessible so if you think about what
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: it would cost to build anything after an hour.
- 1:28:00Speaker 3: Long full drive.
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: Route, yeah so it's a little more expensive because it
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: took them so much effort to build. It and then
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: people have to. Drive the people who run, it Like
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: ozzy and, others they have to drive five hours From
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: Cape town to beat.
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: You they got to go set up and then maybe
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: meet the people back at just and it's.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: All off grid and it's just it's in this leopard
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: reserve and it's just.
- 1:28:27Speaker 3: INCREDIBLE i think. THAT i, mean there's nothing, around.
- 1:28:30Speaker 4: It's just you're the only. People we're the only people within,
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: well at least of fourteen kilometer, radius maybe even further than.
- 1:28:39Speaker 4: That and it's rare to experience a place like that
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: anywhere in the. World, yeah and it was a real
- 1:28:48Speaker 4: honor to be invited there and to see how beautiful
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: it was and like how tastefully done the whole place.
- 1:28:56Speaker 4: Was it wasn't over the, top it was just old.
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: School it was perfect.
- 1:29:00Speaker 4: Simple we had a great meal in that little. Room
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: it was perfect by the.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: Fire oh, yeah and they're you, know they're like old
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: shepherd huts that there. Are some of them are the
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: original shepherd's huts and then the other ones are built
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: in the style of the shepherd's, hut but they're still
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: hot water to take a, shower.
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: And, YEAH i had an outside there's an outside.
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: SHOWER i had my five o'clock outdoor shower underneath the.
- 1:29:23Speaker 4: Stars i've never had that experience before AND i did
- 1:29:27Speaker 4: that in The. Cedarberg, yeah and that's was a MORNING
- 1:29:30Speaker 4: i won't. FORGET i, mean to have a you, know open,
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: air you, know view of the stars before the sun comes,
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: up and to be taking a shower outside really. Incredible.
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: Yeah it's a just absolutely beautiful place and they work
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: very closely with is it The Leopard?
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: Trust is that?
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: RIGHT i think, yeah The Cape Cape Lepard.
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: Trusts it worked very closely with them and concessions, there
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: and they have worked to drop fences to improve habitat
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: and they have a bunch of game cameras out there
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: so that they can keep track of the movement and
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: the health of the animals in the. Area so And
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: ozzie's very passionate about. That so do some research On,
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: bakrons b a AK r and s and then The
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: Cape Leopard trust is something to look.
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: Into two and it Was it was just. Beautiful it was.
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: TRUE i MEAN i could have spent a month there
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: and we only spent a. Night, yeah we only spent
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: a night. There but it was just really in the
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: route to get. There we're actually going to we'll publish
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: that an overland journal as an overland route because people
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: need to be aware of, it because you can easily
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: fly Into Cape, town rent an overland, vehicle go do
