- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Welcome in to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's
- 0:20Speaker 2: Paul Pabst. We're raising banners. We're breaking down injuries. We
- 0:23Speaker 2: got it all going on, Paul.
- 0:24Speaker 4: Guess who was not at Madison Square Garden last night?
- 0:27Speaker 2: Me and you. Yeah, but I watched it on TV.
- 0:30Speaker 4: It was good banner raising, good rings, good basketball.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Full disclosure, I'm a Sixers fan, so it was kind
- 0:35Speaker 2: of mixed emotions. I was so excited to see LeBron,
- 0:38Speaker 2: but I have to admit, I did enjoy sort of
- 0:40Speaker 2: the pomp and circumstance.
- 0:42Speaker 4: We're going to get to it. Coming up in a
- 0:43Speaker 4: little bit, broadcaster Jeff Levering of the Milwaukee Brewers joins
- 0:47Speaker 4: us to talk about the World Series that's upcoming, his
- 0:49Speaker 4: great call against the NLCS for the Dodgers. We've got
- 0:52Speaker 4: to get to that, but furlough. Let's start with some drama,
- 0:54Speaker 4: some quagmire in the NFL.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Okay, so the Philadelphia Eagles ruled out Jalen Hurts on Monday,
- 1:02Speaker 2: likely for the season, with blood clots that started in
- 1:04Speaker 2: his leg and moved to his chest. If you're an
- 1:06Speaker 2: NFL fan, you know the story by now. But the
- 1:09Speaker 2: story keeps changing, Paul, because at first, you know, he
- 1:12Speaker 2: got his calf hit against the Rams, and then he
- 1:15Speaker 2: was hurt midweek. They put him on the injury report.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Then he played in London, and there was a report,
- 1:21Speaker 2: saying that he stayed up all night before the game,
- 1:23Speaker 2: and then Tom Palacero, the ringer, walked that back. The
- 1:26Speaker 2: problem with this story is that the reports keep changing.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So when that happens, I think fans are immediately skeptical
- 1:33Speaker 2: and think that something untoward is going on.
- 1:35Speaker 4: And this Hertz NFL, NFLPA story is breaking out. I
- 1:38Speaker 4: saw it on CNN. I saw it on the evening news.
- 1:41Speaker 4: My wife is saying, what's going on? Why did the
- 1:43Speaker 4: Eagles let Jalen Hertz play with blood clots? That's when
- 1:46Speaker 4: you know a story is breaking loose. And it's gotten
- 1:48Speaker 4: out of control. Like the 36 hours of no sleep thing,
- 1:51Speaker 4: it's now becoming fact. And it seems like everyone wants
- 1:54Speaker 4: to point a finger, and they're not pointing it at
- 1:56Speaker 4: the player. They're going to point it at the medical
- 1:57Speaker 4: staff and the Eagles. Nick Sirianni, as we said yesterday,
- 2:00Speaker 4: did himself no favors. But I don't know if the
- 2:02Speaker 4: Eagles did him any favors, leaving him out high and
- 2:05Speaker 4: dry to explain medical situations.
- 2:07Speaker 2: No, that was a mistake. Dan Patrick laid that out
- 2:09Speaker 2: really well. Putting Nick out alone was not good. And
- 2:12Speaker 2: Nick Sirianni is already embattled in Philadelphia because the team's
- 2:15Speaker 2: not great.
- 2:15Speaker 4: What do you want to know about this story next?
- 2:17Speaker 4: Because it's not over.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah, so there was a report that just came out
- 2:20Speaker 2: that GM Howie Roseman was uber concerned about Jalen Hurts'
- 2:24Speaker 2: health and did everything right from step one.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Now, I don't know if that report was from Howie
- 2:30Speaker 2: Roseman himself, but I kind of believe that maybe this
- 2:33Speaker 2: is not the Pablo Torre-esque controversy that everyone is making
- 2:36Speaker 2: it into.
- 2:37Speaker 4: But a lot of the fans, as soon as the NFL,
- 2:39Speaker 4: I think quickly the NFL said, the Eagles did everything right.
- 2:42Speaker 4: We signed off on this.
- 2:43Speaker 2: The NFL said that.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I think that actually hurts the case because the NFL
- 2:47Speaker 4: backed the Eagles so quickly. People who are skeptical of
- 2:50Speaker 4: the NFL said, wow, what kind of investigation is this?
- 2:54Speaker 4: How much did they look into it? So much so
- 2:56Speaker 4: that the NFLPA said, is there an investigation? Was there one?
- 2:59Speaker 4: Will there be one? Which means the story is ongoing.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Booger McFarlane talked about this, and you're going to get
- 3:05Speaker 4: to that. But it's like, I want to hear from
- 3:06Speaker 4: Jalen Hurts. Can he walk us through? And he's not
- 3:09Speaker 4: a talker. He's not verbose. He's not known for giving information.
- 3:13Speaker 4: So you have a team and a player who's not
- 3:15Speaker 4: known for talking, not talking.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. And the funny thing is, you mentioned the
- 3:20Speaker 2: NFL came out and backed the Eagles. Everyone's skeptical. Dr.
- 3:23Speaker 2: David Sills for the NFL. The second you hear his name,
- 3:25Speaker 2: you're like, uh-oh, what's gone wrong now?
- 3:27Speaker 4: He works for the NFL.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and he was probably involved in concussions, and people
- 3:32Speaker 2: do not trust the NFL when it comes to issues
- 3:34Speaker 2: like that. Let's hear from Booger McFarland, because Booger is
- 3:36Speaker 2: the voice of reason and sort of laid out his
- 3:38Speaker 2: opinion on what the Eagles and Jalen Hurts are going through.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I'd like to see Harry Roseman, the... head team trainer
- 3:47Speaker 1: and the team head doctor get up there, answer questions.
- 3:51Speaker 1: And as a matter of fact, put Jalen Hurts up
- 3:53Speaker 1: there also and say, hey guys, this is very transparent.
- 3:56Speaker 1: There's nothing to hide here. Here's what happened. Here's when
- 3:59Speaker 1: it happened. Unless they do that, there's always going to
- 4:02Speaker 1: be a conspiracy theory of what did they know and
- 4:06Speaker 1: when did they know it. And to me, there's really
- 4:08Speaker 1: no need for that if you just get up there
- 4:09Speaker 1: and be honest and tell the public what's happened.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Yeah, this is a great measure take by Booker McFarlane.
- 4:13Speaker 4: He's kind of a realist. He's like, just Bring everybody
- 4:16Speaker 4: up there. It's Wednesday. You have time before the next game,
- 4:19Speaker 4: before the Thursday night football game. Let's just put everybody
- 4:21Speaker 4: up there. explain step by step, walk us through it
- 4:24Speaker 4: like you're doing a murder mystery. The other thing, it
- 4:27Speaker 4: happened in London. Even that throws this into like, oh,
- 4:30Speaker 4: it happened over there. What kind of doctors were they using?
- 4:32Speaker 4: Was it our doctors? Was it their doctors? It'll never
- 4:35Speaker 4: stop until they put this to bed.
- 4:36Speaker 5: Right.
- 4:36Speaker 2: And then there's the big issue of should he have
- 4:38Speaker 2: been on an airplane with blood clots? That's one of
- 4:40Speaker 2: the things the Eagles had. You asked me what I
- 4:42Speaker 2: wanted answered. That's number one. And why did they stop?
- 4:45Speaker 2: You know, I remember when Chris Bosh had this issue
- 4:47Speaker 2: with blood clots. Yes. There was a lot of mystery
- 4:50Speaker 2: around that, too. Maybe it's really hard to diagnose, in
- 4:53Speaker 2: which case I want to hear that from a doctor.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I don't want to hear Nick Sirianni trying to battle
- 4:57Speaker 2: back and forth with the media when he does not
- 4:59Speaker 2: have the answer. Right.
- 4:59Speaker 4: It's a good point by you. It's a nontraditional athlete injury.
- 5:02Speaker 4: It's not a pulled muscle. It's not a hamstring. It's
- 5:04Speaker 4: not a knee where the coach can kind of talk
- 5:06Speaker 4: about that because they played football. All right, let's get
- 5:08Speaker 4: to another topic that's coming up because this is going
- 5:11Speaker 4: on with Ohio State football and their star quarterback, Julian Sane.
- 5:14Speaker 4: He got roughed up towards the end of the Indiana game.
- 5:16Speaker 4: and had an arm injury. Not a lot of specifics,
- 5:19Speaker 4: but they said he's going to be out for the
- 5:20Speaker 4: regular season and expect him to be out for the playoffs. Now,
- 5:23Speaker 4: Sane was having a very good season, 19 touchdowns that
- 5:26Speaker 4: led the Big Ten. His quarterback rating was number one
- 5:30Speaker 4: in the Big Ten. And if you look at that,
- 5:32Speaker 4: it's like he jammed up his arm-shoulder area.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks like maybe Elbow. Julian Sane, of course,
- 5:38Speaker 2: former prodigy, number one recruit kind of guy. He's been good,
- 5:42Speaker 2: but let's face it, it's Ohio State. He's good, but
- 5:46Speaker 2: I think I could throw about eight touchdowns there because
- 5:48Speaker 2: you just throw to Jeremiah Smith, the best player in
- 5:50Speaker 2: the country.
- 5:50Speaker 4: That is a hard thing with Ohio State quarterbacks to
- 5:52Speaker 4: know how good they are because there's so much talent
- 5:54Speaker 4: on the roster. But Sane did have 21 career starts.
- 5:57Speaker 4: You're going to have five more. You're going to go
- 5:59Speaker 4: into the playoffs with a veteran quarterback and the best
- 6:01Speaker 4: wide receiver possibly in history. Now they're going to go
- 6:04Speaker 4: likely to a true freshman named Luke Fahey or a sophomore,
- 6:07Speaker 4: Tavian St.
- 6:08Speaker 5: Clair.
- 6:08Speaker 4: Now, the bigger picture issue, and you know this, is
- 6:11Speaker 4: the college football playoff committee now will get rid of
- 6:14Speaker 4: the first half of the season and look at Ohio
- 6:16Speaker 4: State football as if this is a new resume. What
- 6:19Speaker 4: they do in the next five or six weeks against USC, Oregon, Northwestern, Nebraska,
- 6:24Speaker 4: and Michigan, right? Now, that's not an easy schedule nor
- 6:28Speaker 4: a brutal schedule. But it's somewhere in between. There's a
- 6:31Speaker 4: losable game in there if you have a backup quarterback.
- 6:34Speaker 2: I think that's a pretty hard schedule. With a backup.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I think that'd be hard with Julian Saban because I
- 6:39Speaker 2: don't think Ohio State is– I don't think anyone's dominant
- 6:41Speaker 2: right now. I think Nebraska's been playing a lot tougher
- 6:44Speaker 2: this year. So you mentioned that the committee's going to
- 6:47Speaker 2: evaluate them. Can you evaluate them based on a wide
- 6:50Speaker 2: receiver and not a quarterback? So when Florida State's quarterback
- 6:53Speaker 2: got hurt, they immediately– Jordan Travis. Yeah, they took them
- 6:56Speaker 2: out of the picture. Right. But that's because I think
- 6:58Speaker 2: they had to put Alabama in. There's a couple things
- 7:00Speaker 2: going on here. One, Ohio State has the best player
- 7:02Speaker 2: in the country. That's eyeballs. They do very well in ratings.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I think the Ohio State-Indiana game got over 10 million.
- 7:09Speaker 2: So that's a big deal. And also, it's not like
- 7:13Speaker 2: with 12 teams, they don't have to boot Ohio State.
- 7:17Speaker 2: to get somebody who has also high ratings in. And
- 7:19Speaker 2: they're very shallow, this committee. So I think they're going
- 7:21Speaker 2: to keep Ohio State in.
- 7:22Speaker 4: There's a lot going on here. My lord, think of
- 7:24Speaker 4: Ohio State lost that game to Indiana, which they could
- 7:27Speaker 4: have lost it by about six inches. But Ohio State
- 7:29Speaker 4: has built a big resume. But they will get judged
- 7:32Speaker 4: by the personnel on the field for the second half
- 7:34Speaker 4: of the season.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Yeah, but, you know, again, how important is saying?
- 7:38Speaker 4: Well, you're going to say, like, this backup quarterback. Now,
- 7:41Speaker 4: he doesn't have one game to prove himself. Let's say
- 7:43Speaker 4: Fahey or the other backup does really well the next
- 7:46Speaker 4: five weeks. It's kind of a wash. Now they're back
- 7:49Speaker 4: to grading them as they are.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I think this is not going to be solely
- 7:52Speaker 2: about the quarterback because of Jeremiah Smith. And I don't
- 7:55Speaker 2: want to hear about quality of play or anything. They
- 7:58Speaker 2: know Ohio State is one of the most popular teams
- 8:00Speaker 2: in the country. They will get them in. But this,
- 8:01Speaker 2: to me, this entire situation is such an NIL era thing.
- 8:06Speaker 2: In the old days, Ohio State, 2014, had Braxton Miller,
- 8:11Speaker 2: Cardale Jones. Actually, no, Braxton Miller might have been gone.
- 8:14Speaker 2: They had, who was the other quarterback? JT Barrett. JT Barrett.
- 8:17Speaker 2: They could go three deep with big-time quarterbacks. Now, their
- 8:20Speaker 2: backup should be Lincoln Kienholz, but he's gone because in
- 8:23Speaker 2: the NIL era, he gets paid to play somewhere else,
- 8:25Speaker 2: so they have to go to nobody.
- 8:26Speaker 4: To a true freshman. But, yeah, it's a good point
- 8:28Speaker 4: by you. 2014, Ohio State has done this before. They
- 8:31Speaker 4: lost their star quarterback, Cardale Jones was listed as third string.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Big guy, played fantastic.
- 8:36Speaker 2: He would have been gone in the NIL. He would
- 8:38Speaker 2: have been starting somewhere else. There's no way he would
- 8:40Speaker 2: still be at Ohio State.
- 8:40Speaker 4: He would have been at Northwestern. He would have been
- 8:42Speaker 4: on Iowa.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Missouri.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Or transferred to someone else. But Ohio State has done
- 8:45Speaker 4: this before.
- 8:46Speaker 2: But not in this era.
- 8:47Speaker 4: They've never had to go this deep into the quarterback roster.
- 8:50Speaker 2: No, I mean, listen. Luke Fahey, no offense. This should
- 8:53Speaker 2: not be the back. You should have a super five-star
- 8:56Speaker 2: behind him or an experienced guy behind him. It doesn't
- 8:59Speaker 2: make any sense.
- 8:59Speaker 4: A star in waiting.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Yeah, you're Ohio State. You have the best roster in
- 9:02Speaker 2: the country. This is pure NIL. You cannot build depth.
- 9:07Speaker 2: And that's why I think we saw five out of
- 9:08Speaker 2: top seven teams lose this weekend because nobody has depth.
- 9:12Speaker 2: There are no more elite teams.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Now, some teams, if this is an SEC team, they
- 9:16Speaker 4: try to acquire someone off another roster, but I don't
- 9:18Speaker 4: think you could do so in.
- 9:19Speaker 2: October, November. You can't acquire somebody off a roster.
- 9:21Speaker 4: Portal's not open, but I could see Lane Kiffin doing it.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Paul, what about academics?
- 9:26Speaker 4: What about academic? All right, last thing before we get done.
- 9:29Speaker 4: NBA openers last night. We talked a little bit about it.
- 9:31Speaker 4: The Knicks get their rings. They raise the banner. And
- 9:34Speaker 4: just like we said here on the show. The 76ers
- 9:37Speaker 4: will not get the ring or the banner, but they'll
- 9:39Speaker 4: win the game because all the hoopla on the game,
- 9:42Speaker 4: the game is an afterthought for the Knicks. Did you
- 9:44Speaker 4: feel that way?
- 9:44Speaker 2: Oh, my God. The Knicks, they didn't look like they
- 9:47Speaker 2: were in great shape. And two reasons. One, they played
- 9:50Speaker 2: in deep June. Then they partied into August for the title.
- 9:54Speaker 2: I got this vibe, Paul, and tell me if you
- 9:56Speaker 2: agree with this, that the Knicks are totally satisfied with
- 9:59Speaker 2: their 1-2. Their fans are totally happy. If they happen
- 10:03Speaker 2: to compete this year, great. If not, no problem.
- 10:05Speaker 4: We're going to talk about that, but it's hard not
- 10:06Speaker 4: to be. If you're Jalen Brunson, you have a key
- 10:08Speaker 4: to the city for the rest of your life. If
- 10:10Speaker 4: you do anything this year, it's just gravy. But real
- 10:12Speaker 4: quick on your 76ers. I love their starting lineup. I
- 10:16Speaker 4: don't know how many games their starting lineup will play
- 10:19Speaker 4: in total together because of Embiid and LeBron with a
- 10:21Speaker 4: little bit of load management. But their starting lineup looks fantastic.
- 10:24Speaker 4: I'm worried about the bench and the players they could
- 10:26Speaker 4: rotate in.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Well, you're not going to see that starting lineup for that.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Joe Embiid's been hurt every single postseason of his entire career.
- 10:32Speaker 2: He will get hurt. LeBron always gets hurt in February.
- 10:35Speaker 2: I don't know if it's a vacation or getting hurt.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I don't know if he's skiing with the family. So
- 10:41Speaker 2: they're kind of like the Rams are in football. They're
- 10:43Speaker 2: just too old to stay healthy. So you might like
- 10:45Speaker 2: that starting five, and I do too, but they are aging.
- 10:48Speaker 2: They didn't always look like they knew what they were
- 10:50Speaker 2: doing last night on the court. They are kind of
- 10:51Speaker 2: new together.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Yeah, they've been playing together for about 45 minutes, so
- 10:54Speaker 4: I'm going to let it breathe a little bit. But
- 10:56Speaker 4: if you look at it, every guy on the court
- 10:57Speaker 4: can play inside and play outside, and Maxie is the
- 11:00Speaker 4: lead dog, which is perfect.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Nobody can shoot, though. They were 11 for 40 last night,
- 11:04Speaker 2: but when you have LeBron, you might be fine.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Also.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Joel Embiid lost some weight, but he still looks like
- 11:10Speaker 2: he is laboring. They are kind of the team to watch.
- 11:13Speaker 2: I am excited about this.
- 11:14Speaker 4: So Embiid, real quick, he's a very sweaty person. He
- 11:17Speaker 4: perpetually looks tired, even when he's in good shape.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Oh, okay, or he is actually tired. All right, coming up,
- 11:23Speaker 2: we have more on the Eagles and Jalen Hurts. Also,
- 11:26Speaker 2: I have a dark horse NFL contender, a team with
- 11:29Speaker 2: a losing record that you should not write off for
- 11:32Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. That's coming up next, Not So Fast.
- 11:35Speaker 4: That's a tease. That's a hot take tease, not a
- 11:36Speaker 4: warm take tease.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Yeah, they're 2-4, Paul, but do not count them out.
- 11:39Speaker 4: By the way, LeBron's hair, or lack of, looks way better.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Yeah, no, he should have come home a while ago.
- 11:44Speaker 4: Clean and mean. Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Perloff,
- 11:49Speaker 4: a midday pick-me-up from the early session game.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Pistons.
- 11:53Speaker 4: I saw Thompson with a little sauce. A little woo-woo
- 11:56Speaker 4: to the basket. I don't know who he was spinning on,
- 11:59Speaker 4: but that was a nice lefty, right-handed play.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yeah, usually his brother is the big highlight guy. Amen.
- 12:03Speaker 2: That was very nice.
- 12:04Speaker 4: Yeah, that was fantastic. Now, before we get to warm takes,
- 12:07Speaker 4: we have to do one. We have breaking NFL news
- 12:09Speaker 4: right here on Not So Fast. Perloff, I don't even
- 12:11Speaker 4: know the news yet. You're dropping it on.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Me as well. This is exciting. Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN,
- 12:15Speaker 2: the Giants will start J.J. McCarthy this weekend against the Texans.
- 12:20Speaker 2: This was a no-brainer. You don't have to protect Jameis
- 12:22Speaker 2: Winston's feelings, I don't think. First of all, he's been around.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Second of all, he was a backup. If you watch
- 12:26Speaker 2: that game Sunday, there's no way they were not going
- 12:29Speaker 2: to go to McCarthy.
- 12:30Speaker 4: But you've got to admit, this escalated quickly.
- 12:32Speaker 2: J.J.
- 12:32Speaker 4: McCarthy, when they acquired him, I don't think we thought
- 12:34Speaker 4: he'd play much at all. Jameis would keep you afloat,
- 12:37Speaker 4: and you don't have much invested, and you let J.J.
- 12:39Speaker 4: McCarthy sit the bench for a while. But he came
- 12:41Speaker 4: in the game, and in that kind of two-minute offense,
- 12:44Speaker 4: run-and-gun situation, he looked pretty good. It's almost like the
- 12:48Speaker 4: situation brought out the best of him, kind of running
- 12:50Speaker 4: and gunning.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Well, remember there was a moment in Minnesota where the
- 12:53Speaker 2: number nine thing, where he looked good in the sense
- 12:56Speaker 2: that he's very physical, he can run, and he's got
- 12:59Speaker 2: a great arm. The issues have been putting together. What
- 13:02Speaker 2: I don't understand, Paul, is how can you not play
- 13:04Speaker 2: well for Kevin O'Connell in Minnesota, who's the ultimate quarterback whisperer,
- 13:08Speaker 2: and then play well elsewhere?
- 13:09Speaker 4: Well, but also management decided to go in another direction.
- 13:12Speaker 4: And once they did, it was over for him there.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Once they went to McCarthy and Wentz, I'm sorry, to
- 13:18Speaker 4: Kyler Murray and Wentz, it was over for them there.
- 13:20Speaker 4: So he wasn't going to get another chance to play.
- 13:22Speaker 4: So moving him was the only option. This is a
- 13:24Speaker 4: fantastic situation for him right now for a couple reasons.
- 13:27Speaker 4: If he plays well the rest of the season... He
- 13:29Speaker 4: could be re-signed there as a backup or a competitor
- 13:32Speaker 4: with Dart or go elsewhere as a high-end backup or
- 13:35Speaker 4: maybe a chance to start elsewhere.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I still am very skeptical about J.J. McCarthy and
- 13:41Speaker 2: the Giants as well.
- 13:42Speaker 4: But you have to admit, his career is in way
- 13:43Speaker 4: better shape than it was six weeks ago.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Than it was six hours ago. Yeah, I'm still not
- 13:49Speaker 2: sold on the Giants. We'll see. I mean, the Texans
- 13:51Speaker 2: could be a tough assignment. The Texans, well, I'm going
- 13:53Speaker 2: to actually talk about it in a minute. The Texans'
- 13:55Speaker 2: defense has not been great, but they're going to look
- 13:57Speaker 2: at J.J. McCarthy and be very excited.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Yes, they will. That's a tease. All right, it's time
- 14:01Speaker 4: for warm takes here on Not So Fast, Pearl. Little
- 14:03Speaker 4: warm ones to get you ready in October. Maybe a
- 14:06Speaker 4: cup of cider with this warm take.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 14:08Speaker 4: New York Knicks fans, you've entered a new stage of fandom,
- 14:11Speaker 4: and anyone under 50 years old doesn't really understand this. Now,
- 14:15Speaker 4: you are in the stage of fandom of post-title fandom.
- 14:18Speaker 4: You won this unexpected title last year. You dined out.
- 14:21Speaker 4: You celebrated in the streets. And it goes in stages,
- 14:24Speaker 4: like stages of grief, stages of winning. It happens there, too.
- 14:27Speaker 4: So this summer, you've been living on Easy Street if
- 14:29Speaker 4: you're a Knicks fan. You've been watching Jalen Brunson. You've
- 14:32Speaker 4: been celebrating. You've been buying gear, climbing on rafters. That
- 14:35Speaker 4: was your summer. Now you're entering that thing where you
- 14:38Speaker 4: think to yourself, can we do it again? Can my
- 14:41Speaker 4: Knicks do it again? Can we repeat? It's understandable. You
- 14:44Speaker 4: don't think that you were a 53-win team last year.
- 14:47Speaker 4: You think you were a team that won the NBA title.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Why not do it again? you're kind of confused about
- 14:52Speaker 4: where you stand in the world. And you're thinking, you
- 14:55Speaker 4: love the feeling of winning so much. Like, let's run
- 14:57Speaker 4: it back. Let's do it again. The odds are very
- 14:59Speaker 4: much against you. I'm not anti-Knicks. I'm just realizing that
- 15:02Speaker 4: most teams in the NBA and all sports don't repeat.
- 15:04Speaker 4: And it probably won't be a repeat for New York
- 15:06Speaker 4: Knicks fans. So you'll be at the end of this
- 15:08Speaker 4: year and you'll not make it, you know, you bow
- 15:10Speaker 4: out in the playoffs at some juncture and you're like, okay,
- 15:13Speaker 4: it didn't work out, but we still have last year.
- 15:16Speaker 4: And then the year after that, you won't make it
- 15:17Speaker 4: to the finals. And last year again, And then when
- 15:21Speaker 4: you get to this mode where you're a couple years
- 15:22Speaker 4: away from winning a title, I'm a Cubs fan, 2016,
- 15:26Speaker 4: the farther you get away from that winning season, the
- 15:28Speaker 4: more it becomes like this mythical time in your life where,
- 15:31Speaker 4: remember all Marcia Hargitay and all those things and all
- 15:34Speaker 4: those people there and celebrating with Tracy Morgan and Timothy Chalamet.
- 15:38Speaker 4: It'll be like this warm blanket that you remember from
- 15:40Speaker 4: your past, this great time. And every year gets further
- 15:43Speaker 4: away and becomes not real, but something you would love
- 15:46Speaker 4: to get back someday. So, Enjoy this, Knicks fans. Enjoy
- 15:49Speaker 4: thinking about a repeat. It could happen. It probably won't,
- 15:53Speaker 4: but someday you'll be sitting there going, remember that 25-26 season?
- 15:56Speaker 4: And reminiscing with people, and it'll be this warm, cozy
- 15:59Speaker 4: feeling all over again.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you're a Chicago fan. The Bears have
- 16:02Speaker 2: been living off 85 for 41 years.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Thanks for bringing that up.
- 16:05Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, it's the exact same thing. And the
- 16:08Speaker 2: Knicks fans have been living off Willis Reed for 45 years.
- 16:11Speaker 4: And you always think your team can repeat. 85 Bears
- 16:15Speaker 4: and 2016 Cubs. Everyone's healthy.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Why not? But nobody thinks it. The 85 Bears were
- 16:18Speaker 2: the best team in football. They were 15-1.
- 16:20Speaker 4: And they couldn't repeat.
- 16:21Speaker 2: They couldn't repeat. The Knicks are nowhere close to that. So,
- 16:24Speaker 2: you know, the Thunder are the team that should have repeated,
- 16:27Speaker 2: not the Knicks.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Right.
- 16:27Speaker 2: The Thunder.
- 16:28Speaker 4: They're sitting at home going, I can't believe we're not
- 16:30Speaker 4: in this.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay. I'm going to go back to Jalen Hurts
- 16:34Speaker 2: and the Eagles. Now, I want to separate two things.
- 16:36Speaker 2: The medical controversy around Jalen Hurts is serious, and I
- 16:39Speaker 2: really hope that he's doing well. The future of the
- 16:42Speaker 2: Eagles is a totally different story. Because coming into this season,
- 16:44Speaker 2: there are a lot of reports that the Eagles were
- 16:47Speaker 2: evaluating whether they wanted to continue to build around Jalen Hurts.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Now that he's injured, I think it's time to rip
- 16:53Speaker 2: the Band-Aid and start over. And here's why. You have
- 16:56Speaker 2: a high first-round pick this year, and then next year
- 16:58Speaker 2: you have two number ones and two number twos. You
- 17:00Speaker 2: have arguably the best general manager in football in Howie Roseman.
- 17:05Speaker 2: I think a lot of people don't want to trade
- 17:07Speaker 2: with Howie Roseman because he's smarter than everyone else. So
- 17:10Speaker 2: let him cook. You want a quarterback on a rookie
- 17:13Speaker 2: deal so you can build talent all around him. Because
- 17:16Speaker 2: you lost Lane Johnson, your right tackle. You lost Cam Juergens.
- 17:19Speaker 2: You traded him away. And then you have Jalen Hurts,
- 17:23Speaker 2: who's getting a little bit older and doesn't want to
- 17:24Speaker 2: run the ball. It is time to go back to
- 17:27Speaker 2: the formula, which is a rookie deal quarterback. and build
- 17:30Speaker 2: talent around him. You already have the best defensive player
- 17:32Speaker 2: in the NFL, and I said that, Jalen Carter, and
- 17:35Speaker 2: you have a good left tackle in Jordan Mailata. So
- 17:36Speaker 2: you have some pieces, but it's time to go all
- 17:39Speaker 2: in around the quarterback, draft one in the next two years,
- 17:42Speaker 2: and you'll be fine.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Okay, so Hurts is under contract for next season completely.
- 17:46Speaker 4: He will be on your.
- 17:47Speaker 2: No, no, no, no. Yeah, he is under contract, but
- 17:49Speaker 2: they could cut him.
- 17:50Speaker 4: They could cut him. That's a big habit. Would you
- 17:52Speaker 4: go this upcoming draft, the 2027 draft, would you use
- 17:56Speaker 4: that first-round draft pick on the quarterback that falls to
- 17:59Speaker 4: you a la Ty Simpson with the Rams?
- 18:02Speaker 2: Oh, I mean, the Eagles will probably be 6, 7,
- 18:05Speaker 2: 8 in the draft. Really? That high? Yeah, I mean,
- 18:08Speaker 2: they probably.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Which they usually aren't, so this is an opportunity.
- 18:11Speaker 2: But next year, they might think, oh, well, we might
- 18:14Speaker 2: be getting the Kamario Taylor, Keelan Russell sweepstakes. So I
- 18:17Speaker 2: think you're evaluating the two drafts. We don't really know
- 18:20Speaker 2: which quarterbacks are going to be there. We know that
- 18:22Speaker 2: Drew Messamaker is a top pick. We know Darion Ments
- 18:24Speaker 2: is a top pick. If they're sitting there and they think, C.J.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Carr will probably be gone. But, yeah, they're definitely a 6-7-8.
- 18:30Speaker 2: They might take it this year because of the opportunity,
- 18:33Speaker 2: but they might wait until next year when they have
- 18:35Speaker 2: all those picks.
- 18:36Speaker 4: Tons of draft capital. And either way, they've got a
- 18:38Speaker 4: draft capital to move up in the draft or to
- 18:40Speaker 4: surround that rookie quarterback.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, absolutely. And, you know, they're definitely going to
- 18:44Speaker 2: take a hit. But, look, the Broncos took a massive
- 18:46Speaker 2: hit with Russell Wilson, and we're back in the AFC
- 18:48Speaker 2: title game two years later. So it can be done.
- 18:50Speaker 4: Yeah, dressing it beforehand is always good for the NFL teams.
- 18:53Speaker 4: Look at what the Rams are doing. You've got to
- 18:54Speaker 4: like what the Rams are doing. All right, let's get
- 18:56Speaker 4: to this topic. Wide receiver Tara McLaurin, a very good
- 18:59Speaker 4: wide receiver for a long time with the Washington Commanders,
- 19:02Speaker 4: had a bad knee injury. Patella tendon out for the season.
- 19:04Speaker 4: It's a tough one to see. And there are certain
- 19:06Speaker 4: players when you're watching them play, I don't especially like
- 19:09Speaker 4: the Commanders nor dislike the Commanders. I'm ambivalent. But whenever
- 19:12Speaker 4: I watch them play over the past decade, I'm like,
- 19:14Speaker 4: that McLaurin, man, what a good player he is. He's
- 19:16Speaker 4: always playing hard, playing tough, always keeps them in games
- 19:19Speaker 4: no matter who the quarterback is. And he reminds me
- 19:22Speaker 4: of one of those players like I'd love to have
- 19:24Speaker 4: that guy on my team type players. Those are the
- 19:26Speaker 4: players I call them. When I was growing up, I
- 19:28Speaker 4: was a Bears fan. And you'd think you'd hate the Packers,
- 19:30Speaker 4: but you can hate the Packers and still say, man,
- 19:32Speaker 4: that James Lofton, he was something. Or as a Cubs fan,
- 19:35Speaker 4: I would grow up and your guy, Mike Schmidt, Mike
- 19:37Speaker 4: Schmidt would kill the Cubs. Like, oh my God, that
- 19:39Speaker 4: guy's so good. I have to respect his game and
- 19:42Speaker 4: wish he was on my team. And McLaurin fits in
- 19:44Speaker 4: that category where if you're just watching a Thursday night
- 19:47Speaker 4: game and the commanders are playing, you're like, man, that
- 19:49Speaker 4: guy's fun to watch. He's a good time. And it
- 19:51Speaker 4: bums you out when players like that are out for
- 19:53Speaker 4: the season. And there are certain guys, they're maybe not
- 19:55Speaker 4: the best player in the league, or maybe they are,
- 19:58Speaker 4: especially like JSN out in Seattle, but you watch them
- 20:00Speaker 4: play and you're not a fan of their team, but
- 20:02Speaker 4: you say, God, I love his game and I wish
- 20:04Speaker 4: to God I could have that guy on my team.
- 20:06Speaker 4: Like Fred Warner of the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers
- 20:10Speaker 4: come and go. Star players come and go. We're like,
- 20:11Speaker 4: that Fred Warner is a constant. I would give anything
- 20:14Speaker 4: to have him on my team. McLaurin fits in that category.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Oh, God, I love Scary Terry. The second he went down,
- 20:21Speaker 2: I saw him reach for his knee, and I knew
- 20:23Speaker 2: this was it. I mean, to be honest, the Commanders
- 20:25Speaker 2: aren't doing anything this year anyway. So from an immediate standpoint,
- 20:28Speaker 2: it's no impact. But you're right, his career, he deserves
- 20:31Speaker 2: a good year or two. Maybe he would have gotten
- 20:32Speaker 2: traded out of there and had a chance to win
- 20:34Speaker 2: at a higher level.
- 20:35Speaker 4: It's almost like as a fan, not of any certain team,
- 20:37Speaker 4: certain players get hurt, and you're like, That guy, that
- 20:39Speaker 4: guy's the reason to watch that squad.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Yeah, no, Terry McLaurin, everybody likes him. He's supposed to
- 20:44Speaker 2: be a great guy, too. Okay, I promised a dark
- 20:46Speaker 2: horse Super Bowl contender. I don't know if this dark horse,
- 20:49Speaker 2: because a lot of people had them preseason. Let's talk
- 20:51Speaker 2: about the Houston Texans.
- 20:52Speaker 3: I knew it.
- 20:53Speaker 2: They started out 0-4, and you might write them off,
- 20:55Speaker 2: although they did start off with a bad record last
- 20:57Speaker 2: year and made the playoffs. There's a lot of reasons
- 20:59Speaker 2: to be excited. Now, their defense has not been good
- 21:02Speaker 2: so far, but I feel like now that D'Amico Ryans
- 21:05Speaker 2: has taken back the play calling, they can fix that. Now,
- 21:08Speaker 2: here's why you should be excited. Tank Dell's coming back
- 21:10Speaker 2: this week, Paul, who's a very talented wide receiver. We
- 21:12Speaker 2: love Tank Dell. The other thing, Marvin Harrison looked great.
- 21:16Speaker 2: He only played 12 snaps, got four targets and three catches,
- 21:19Speaker 2: but he made a really tough catch over the middle
- 21:21Speaker 2: with defenders all around him. So Marvin Harrison, I think,
- 21:24Speaker 2: had a reputation as being a little bit soft, looked
- 21:26Speaker 2: tough in his opening game. And C.J. Stroud is playing awesome.
- 21:30Speaker 2: I told a friend yesterday about what Louis Riddick, The
- 21:33Speaker 2: ESPN analyst said on the Dan Patrick show that he
- 21:36Speaker 2: would take C.J. Stroud over Caleb Williams. Wow. And my
- 21:39Speaker 2: friend's jaw dropped. They were thinking, what are you talking about?
- 21:41Speaker 2: It's Caleb Williams. But the more I looked at it, C.J.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Stroud is playing amazing football. And if you judge him
- 21:47Speaker 2: after his rookie season, we know he has all the
- 21:49Speaker 2: talent in the world. So you might have an elite quarterback.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Once that defense is fixed and they get after the
- 21:54Speaker 2: opposing quarterback, This is a very dangerous team, and they
- 21:57Speaker 2: have the fifth easiest schedule for all the NFL remaining.
- 22:01Speaker 2: They have the Giants this week. They have a really
- 22:03Speaker 2: easy run. I think they're going to be back in
- 22:04Speaker 2: the mix before long.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Pearl, I think this is a great hill for you
- 22:07Speaker 4: to jump on early because everybody bailed on the Texans
- 22:09Speaker 4: in September. The defense is what really made people bail
- 22:12Speaker 4: because the offense didn't play that poorly. I will say
- 22:15Speaker 4: their running game concerns me, or their lack of running
- 22:17Speaker 4: game concerns me. I don't know if they have a
- 22:19Speaker 4: great back nor a great running game to put around him, C.J.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Stroud.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Do they make a trade at deadline for a running back?
- 22:26Speaker 4: David Montgomery is not working out anything special. That's the
- 22:28Speaker 4: thing I would like to see them to get over
- 22:30Speaker 4: that hump.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Yeah, but, you know, if you can threaten the other
- 22:33Speaker 2: team enough with a pass game, if you have Marvin
- 22:34Speaker 2: Harrison and Nico Collins and Tank Dell running out, I
- 22:37Speaker 2: think the teams are going to have to move back
- 22:39Speaker 2: and cover all those guys, and that will open it
- 22:40Speaker 2: up for Woody Martin.
- 22:41Speaker 4: And it does feel like the defense is too talented
- 22:43Speaker 4: to struggle for 17 games.
- 22:44Speaker 2: Yeah, and Will Anderson.
- 22:45Speaker 4: The month of September, yes, but not the rest of them.
- 22:47Speaker 4: All right, before we go, this is a running thing
- 22:49Speaker 4: we do on this show. It's the college football play
- 22:52Speaker 4: of the season. King of the Hill. You have it
- 22:55Speaker 4: for one week. Can you keep it, or can someone
- 22:57Speaker 4: knock you off the hill?
- 22:58Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 22:59Speaker 4: Harvard's Hail Mary. We saw this a few times. These
- 23:02Speaker 4: young fellas, future hedge fund managers. Beautiful Hail Mary here.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Little short, and the pitch, was that planned or not?
- 23:10Speaker 4: We still don't know. Great job by them. Now, that
- 23:13Speaker 4: was holding serve for a couple weeks here, Perloff.
- 23:15Speaker 3: We have a new one.
- 23:16Speaker 4: This is Auburn with their big upset at Georgia. Great win.
- 23:19Speaker 4: Watch this catch by wide receiver... Chaz Nimrod. That's a
- 23:23Speaker 4: real name, Chaz Nimrod.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, we like that name a lot, and
- 23:27Speaker 2: that catch lives up to the name.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Yeah, Chester A. Nimrod going over the back of the
- 23:32Speaker 4: defender and scooping that in. Also, he went from light
- 23:35Speaker 4: to shade there, almost like the old Dallas Stadium. Where
- 23:38Speaker 4: are you going on this one?
- 23:39Speaker 2: Okay, if your last name is Nimrod and you're going
- 23:42Speaker 2: to call your kid Chester, you know he better be
- 23:44Speaker 2: good at sports. Otherwise, he's going to be bullied. So
- 23:47Speaker 2: I like his confidence. I'm going with Chaz Nimrod.
- 23:49Speaker 4: You and I have both been called Nimrod lots of times,
- 23:51Speaker 4: but it's not our first name nor our last name.
- 23:53Speaker 4: So Chaz Nimrod, great catch. You're our College Football Player
- 23:56Speaker 4: of the Year holding serve right now.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Bye-bye, Harvard.
- 23:59Speaker 4: All right, coming up next, we talk to, oh, Milwaukee
- 24:03Speaker 4: Brewers broadcast Jeff Levering. He's calling the World Series for them.
- 24:06Speaker 4: He's called all their games. Milwaukee, too much rest or
- 24:09Speaker 4: perfect rest? We'll find out next. Stick around. Not so fast.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Chaz Nimrod.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Chaz Nimrod IV.
- 24:16Speaker 2: We've got to get him on the show because I
- 24:18Speaker 2: love that name.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Chester Xavier Nimrod IV.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Is it really Xavier?
- 24:22Speaker 1: Nope.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Just made that up.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Just made that up. Lined into the gap and left center.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Churrio back.
- 24:28Speaker 2: He makes the catch.
- 24:30Speaker 3: The Brewers win the pennant.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 24:33Speaker 3: The Brewers win the pennant.
- 24:37Speaker 6: The World Series will go through Wisconsin.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. Perloff and Paps here.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Of course, that was Jeff Levering calling the dramatic final
- 24:48Speaker 2: out of the Brewers-Dodgers series. Apparently an homage to Bob Uecker,
- 24:53Speaker 2: as we know now.
- 24:54Speaker 4: Great call.
- 24:54Speaker 2: We're lucky enough to have Jeff on right now. All right, Jeff,
- 24:57Speaker 2: we've got to know, just to start, was that pre-planned?
- 25:01Speaker 2: Did you know that you were going to have that
- 25:03Speaker 2: kind of call to honor the great Bob Uecker?
- 25:06Speaker 7: No, to be honest with you, I did not plan
- 25:08Speaker 7: any of that. The main point was that the World
- 25:12Speaker 7: Series is going to go through Wisconsin. That was the
- 25:15Speaker 7: main crux of what I wanted to say and how
- 25:18Speaker 7: important it is to the fan base to have a
- 25:20Speaker 7: World Series in Wisconsin for the first time in 44 years.
- 25:23Speaker 7: How I got there, I have no idea. Honestly, I
- 25:28Speaker 7: really didn't have that planned. I wanted to get the
- 25:30Speaker 7: play right first. As a play-by-play guy, you want to
- 25:33Speaker 7: make sure you get the play right first. And it
- 25:34Speaker 7: was a rocket to left center. I had to make
- 25:36Speaker 7: sure the Churrio caught it. I lost it in the
- 25:38Speaker 7: LED board, so I didn't know if it went into
- 25:40Speaker 7: his glove or over his head or anything.
- 25:41Speaker 3: So I'm just reacting in that moment.
- 25:44Speaker 7: And as soon as I saw out, it's a very,
- 25:47Speaker 7: very quick pregnant pause there. And then what went through
- 25:52Speaker 7: my mind was, I guess, Uke in major league. And
- 25:56Speaker 7: then also a combination of Russ Hodges with the Giants
- 25:59Speaker 7: win the pennant. The Giants win the pennant because the
- 26:02Speaker 7: Uke line in the movie is not The Indians win
- 26:04Speaker 7: the pennant. It's just the Indians win it. Oh, my God,
- 26:07Speaker 7: the Indians win it. So I kind of mixed the
- 26:09Speaker 7: two and made it my own in the moment. So
- 26:13Speaker 7: there was not any pre-plan except for, all right, the
- 26:16Speaker 7: World Series goes through Wisconsin.
- 26:18Speaker 4: Great job by you. Now, the Brewers have been getting
- 26:20Speaker 4: better every year. Every year they get more wins, a
- 26:23Speaker 4: little closer. But when you went into that and the
- 26:25Speaker 4: fans and the team went into that Dodgers series, it
- 26:27Speaker 4: was like you still got to get over the Dodgers.
- 26:30Speaker 4: It's like this massive hump. Was it almost like trepidation
- 26:34Speaker 4: facing the Dodgers?
- 26:35Speaker 7: I think this team realized that they were ready for
- 26:38Speaker 7: the moment. And they didn't feel like, as opposed to 2025,
- 26:43Speaker 7: that they were happy to be there.
- 26:45Speaker 3: They felt like they belonged there.
- 26:47Speaker 7: And that's a big difference in mentality.
- 26:49Speaker 3: I think last year.
- 26:51Speaker 7: In 2025, the Brewers expended so much energy in the
- 26:53Speaker 7: division series against the Cubs, and getting over the hump
- 26:57Speaker 7: of getting through a playoff series for the first time
- 26:59Speaker 7: since 2018 was on their minds last year. That once
- 27:03Speaker 7: they got into the dance, once they got themselves home
- 27:05Speaker 7: field advantage, the best record in Major League Baseball for
- 27:07Speaker 7: a second.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Straight year, it was just a matter of being themselves.
- 27:11Speaker 7: And that's exactly what they proved on the biggest of stages.
- 27:14Speaker 2: So Manager Pat Murphy was on the Dan Patrick Show today,
- 27:17Speaker 2: and Dan asked him an interesting question about the Miz.
- 27:20Speaker 2: He asked, is Mizorowski the best pitcher in baseball? And
- 27:23Speaker 2: Murphy said, not really. He mentioned some other pitchers. Is
- 27:27Speaker 2: he just sort of staying humble, downplaying his own guy,
- 27:31Speaker 2: or does he really not believe that? And do you
- 27:33Speaker 2: think the Miz is the best pitcher right now in baseball?
- 27:36Speaker 7: I think he's got the best stuff of any anybody
- 27:38Speaker 7: in Major League Baseball, whether he's the best pitcher is
- 27:41Speaker 7: up for debate. And I think with what Murph is
- 27:43Speaker 7: saying is that there's still some growth in Jacob Mizorowski.
- 27:47Speaker 7: I mean, he hasn't this is his first full major
- 27:49Speaker 7: league season. So I think he still has a lot
- 27:52Speaker 7: of growth left in what he has and what his
- 27:55Speaker 7: abilities are. he has not pitched great in the postseason.
- 27:59Speaker 7: They need him to be great in the World Series
- 28:01Speaker 7: against this Tampa Bay roster and this Tampa Bay offense.
- 28:05Speaker 3: Is the stuff electric? Absolutely it is.
- 28:07Speaker 7: I mean, the guy throws 106 miles an hour without
- 28:10Speaker 7: even batting an eyelash. And plus the off-speed stuff is
- 28:14Speaker 7: still a work in progress. But I think what Murph
- 28:17Speaker 7: is trying to instill in him is that you still
- 28:19Speaker 7: have some growth and you can be whatever you want
- 28:23Speaker 7: to be.
- 28:23Speaker 3: Just as long as you keep working at it.
- 28:25Speaker 4: Jeff, you know, when the Brewers won, we were sitting
- 28:28Speaker 4: here not so fast talking about a great story it is.
- 28:31Speaker 4: And then I remember thinking to myself, I bet you
- 28:32Speaker 4: if I was the Brewers players and fans, I wish
- 28:34Speaker 4: the World Series started tomorrow or the next day. Nine
- 28:37Speaker 4: days off feels almost too long. I know you want rest,
- 28:40Speaker 4: but it's like you've got to churn and grind as
- 28:43Speaker 4: a fan base. Do you think that the fans and
- 28:46Speaker 4: the players wish this was a little bit less of
- 28:47Speaker 4: a layoff?
- 28:49Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 28:49Speaker 7: It feels like an NFL week where you play a
- 28:51Speaker 7: Thursday game and then not until the following Sunday or Monday.
- 28:54Speaker 7: So you're just sitting there and you're grinding away on
- 28:56Speaker 7: that last game. And baseball is such an everyday sport,
- 29:00Speaker 7: as everyone knows. I think that they wish they would
- 29:03Speaker 7: have played maybe not the next day, but certainly the
- 29:05Speaker 7: day after because of the celebrations and whatnot. And what
- 29:09Speaker 7: a great night that was to get to the World
- 29:11Speaker 7: Series for the first time in 44 years. But baseball
- 29:15Speaker 7: is such a routine base. And once they got back,
- 29:17Speaker 7: home to Milwaukee. They went right back to work on Sunday,
- 29:22Speaker 7: had a light workout. They've been grinding away these last
- 29:24Speaker 7: couple of days. They have learned their lesson on what
- 29:28Speaker 7: to do during breaks over the last few seasons, getting
- 29:31Speaker 7: past the wildcard round and automatically into.
- 29:33Speaker 3: The division series.
- 29:34Speaker 7: So this is a team that does not take these
- 29:37Speaker 7: days off lightly, but they're still getting their work done.
- 29:40Speaker 2: Done jeff give us a vibe check in milwaukee uh
- 29:43Speaker 2: nervous excited in between both.
- 29:47Speaker 7: I would say that the city and the state the
- 29:49Speaker 7: the vibes are very high um you got people flying
- 29:52Speaker 7: flags and i've always said that When the colors start
- 29:56Speaker 7: to change, this state becomes a Packers state.
- 30:00Speaker 3: It is definitely a Brewers state right now.
- 30:02Speaker 7: And you could feel that at Lambeau with the Let's
- 30:04Speaker 7: Go Brewers chants over the weekend against the Cowboys.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Matt LaFleur is wearing a Brewers hat.
- 30:09Speaker 7: Even the Bucs, who are starting their regular season, it's
- 30:12Speaker 7: all about the Brewers right now. And for good reason.
- 30:15Speaker 7: I'd say the vibes are very good. This is going
- 30:18Speaker 7: to be capacity crowd. at least five or six rows
- 30:22Speaker 7: of standing room only. Um, it's going to be a
- 30:24Speaker 7: madhouse at American family field come Friday.
- 30:26Speaker 2: All right.
- 30:27Speaker 4: The last time the brewers were in, as you know,
- 30:28Speaker 4: everyone knows it was 82. Perloff and I were chopping
- 30:31Speaker 4: up that 82 roster. Like it was our family tree.
- 30:33Speaker 4: We knew every single player. Now I don't know how
- 30:36Speaker 4: old you are, Jeff, but, but you know, with your hair,
- 30:39Speaker 4: you look quite young. Uh, There's a lot of the
- 30:42Speaker 4: old folks here. I would say if you're over 50,
- 30:43Speaker 4: you're like, this is it. We have to get this
- 30:46Speaker 4: World Series. We need one in my lifetime. But if
- 30:48Speaker 4: you're 30 or under, you're like, the Brewers are always
- 30:51Speaker 4: in the playoff. It's like a dichotomy of fans.
- 30:53Speaker 3: It really is. And I was negative one in 1982.
- 30:56Speaker 7: So I was born in 83.
- 31:00Speaker 3: But I know that.
- 31:01Speaker 7: 82 team just like it's the back of my hand.
- 31:03Speaker 7: And I didn't even grow up a Brewers fan, right?
- 31:05Speaker 7: So I've been in the organization for 12 years. And
- 31:07Speaker 7: the fact that this fan base treats that 82 team
- 31:11Speaker 7: like they won the thing um it really is incredible
- 31:14Speaker 7: like they didn't win the world series but they treat
- 31:16Speaker 7: this this team like they did um even robin young
- 31:20Speaker 7: came out yesterday and he's he's as big a fan
- 31:22Speaker 7: as anybody on.
- 31:23Speaker 3: This on this.
- 31:24Speaker 7: Brewers roster he wants them to go win it he
- 31:26Speaker 7: wants them to win it for for that 82 team
- 31:29Speaker 7: for the community for bud selig for the late bob
- 31:31Speaker 7: euchre they they want this team to get it done
- 31:34Speaker 7: and they're four wins away from it.
- 31:36Speaker 4: Before we get you out of here, Jeff, we do
- 31:37Speaker 4: have a thing here called Such Thing is a Dumb Question.
- 31:40Speaker 4: You're a broadcaster. You call games every single day. We
- 31:43Speaker 4: know broadcasters want to take care of their voice, and
- 31:46Speaker 4: there may be things like tea or you drink. Is
- 31:48Speaker 4: there a bad pregame meal or a good pregame meal
- 31:51Speaker 4: for a broadcaster, and you specifically?
- 31:54Speaker 7: A bad pregame meal is anything dairy or a lot
- 31:58Speaker 7: of popcorn. Stay away from the popcorn because that stuff
- 32:00Speaker 7: gets stuck in your teeth or gets stuck in your throat.
- 32:02Speaker 3: You never need one of those things. Good call. I
- 32:04Speaker 3: try and stay away from the dairy and.
- 32:06Speaker 7: Cold foods, mostly warm foods. And I do my fair
- 32:11Speaker 7: share of tea as well.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Do you do a warm-up? We do a warm-up for
- 32:15Speaker 2: Not So Fast that my daughter, who's in drama class,
- 32:18Speaker 2: taught us.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Yeah, what do you guys do? What's your warm-up?
- 32:21Speaker 2: Well, I blow a straw into a cup. Have you
- 32:23Speaker 2: ever used that?
- 32:25Speaker 4: For the first three weeks, I didn't know what he
- 32:26Speaker 4: was doing, Jeff.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Were you just blowing bubbles?
- 32:28Speaker 3: We were just blowing bubbles, guys.
- 32:30Speaker 2: And trilling, which is when you go brrrr with your lips,
- 32:33Speaker 2: then red leather, yellow leather. There's lots of tricks. I
- 32:36Speaker 2: could talk to you after the show.
- 32:37Speaker 4: Jeff, don't do any of this. You're on a roll.
- 32:39Speaker 4: The brewers are rolling.
- 32:40Speaker 2: You're rolling.
- 32:40Speaker 4: You're great at what you do. Don't listen to us,
- 32:42Speaker 4: for God's sakes.
- 32:43Speaker 3: I do the Anchorman ow-dow brown cow.
- 32:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right, Jeff, well, good luck with
- 32:48Speaker 2: the rest of the series. It looks like you're having
- 32:50Speaker 2: a great time, and the whole city is, and we're
- 32:52Speaker 2: behind you. We're Brewers fans, to be honest.
- 32:55Speaker 7: Appreciate you guys. It's a heck of a run, and
- 32:57Speaker 7: hopefully we can finish this thing off.
- 32:59Speaker 2: All right, that's Jeff Levering. Of course, Milwaukee Brewers play-by-play.
- 33:03Speaker 2: What a great call, and I think hopefully he has
- 33:05Speaker 2: another great call in him for a Brewers fan.
- 33:07Speaker 4: I wonder if a guy like him tries not to
- 33:10Speaker 4: think about the closing game. In case the Brewers do
- 33:12Speaker 4: close this out, don't think of your last call, because
- 33:15Speaker 4: then it gets in your head, and you start like,
- 33:17Speaker 4: rehearsing in your head, I would bet he goes freestyle.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Well, yeah, he seems like a professional, so I think
- 33:22Speaker 2: he's going to be okay.
- 33:23Speaker 4: And what a time in Wisconsin right now. The Wisconsin
- 33:26Speaker 4: Badgers are a little up, a little surprising. The Green
- 33:29Speaker 4: Bay Packers a little up after a tough September, and
- 33:31Speaker 4: the Brewers are right at the doorstep.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. It's very exciting. Exciting for Rays fans
- 33:35Speaker 2: as well. All right, coming up next, we're going to
- 33:38Speaker 2: actually hear that quote from Pat Murphy, Brewers manager who
- 33:41Speaker 2: was on with Dan, and more from the DP Show
- 33:44Speaker 2: and Not So Fast. Coming up next.
- 33:46Speaker 4: He had good broadcaster hair.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Oh, God. What about his voice?
- 33:49Speaker 4: Yeah, like a sharp part.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Nice hair.
- 33:56Speaker 4: I want to start with Wemby. You've seen him in
- 33:58Speaker 4: person multiple times overseas, here. I haven't seen him play
- 34:01Speaker 4: in person. And I'm curious, the physicality of him, when
- 34:05Speaker 4: you're watching from your vantage point right next to the court,
- 34:07Speaker 4: how can you describe it to the casual fan?
- 34:10Speaker 8: It's almost impossible to describe. I say that there are
- 34:12Speaker 8: only a couple guys who, no matter what the price
- 34:15Speaker 8: of admission is, they're worth paying. I've said that Steph Curry,
- 34:19Speaker 8: even just his warmups and everything that he does, that
- 34:22Speaker 8: has always been worth whatever the price of admission is.
- 34:24Speaker 8: LeBron James, certainly in his prime, that was special and
- 34:28Speaker 8: unique when he was early in his Cleveland days and
- 34:30Speaker 8: then Miami and back in his second stint in Cleveland.
- 34:33Speaker 8: I've said Nikola Jokic probably has to be on that list.
- 34:36Speaker 8: If you see him up close, it's so much different
- 34:39Speaker 8: than when you watch it on TV and it's special
- 34:41Speaker 8: on TV. But this guy's at the top of that list.
- 34:43Speaker 8: He probably trumps all those other ones because... when you
- 34:47Speaker 8: see it, especially when you're close to the court, it
- 34:49Speaker 8: doesn't look real. I'd say, let's start there. It looks
- 34:52Speaker 8: like it would be an AI type of thing that
- 34:55Speaker 8: you just find online. You're like, oh, well, I'll send
- 34:58Speaker 8: this to my buddies because it's funny.
- 34:59Speaker 2: It's not.
- 35:00Speaker 8: It's serious. And this guy is as serious as it gets.
- 35:03Speaker 8: He's as competitive as it gets. You feel that competition.
- 35:07Speaker 8: You feel that vigor towards his opponents emanating through him
- 35:11Speaker 8: when you're up close with him. And then the movements
- 35:14Speaker 8: and the athletic ability I've never seen anything like it.
- 35:17Speaker 8: The hope is that he can stay healthy for 15
- 35:19Speaker 8: years and do this at this high level for 15
- 35:22Speaker 8: years because NBA fans are treated on a nightly basis.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Noah, I don't really understand how the Spurs are built.
- 35:28Speaker 2: I know they experimented with a three-guard lineup this summer.
- 35:31Speaker 2: You know, they seem very small and wimpy, kind of like, oh,
- 35:35Speaker 2: he's 7'5. He's going to handle everything inside. I kind
- 35:38Speaker 2: of worry that he has to do too much because
- 35:40Speaker 2: he's surrounded by four guards.
- 35:42Speaker 8: Here's what I'll say if there's one guy who can
- 35:44Speaker 8: do it, though. It's this guy. Watch games that the
- 35:48Speaker 8: San Antonio Spurs played defensively, even last season when they
- 35:52Speaker 8: had more length out there. And really, the length that
- 35:55Speaker 8: they were putting out there wasn't anything crazy or different
- 35:58Speaker 8: than what they're going to. Dylan Harper, he's fairly long.
- 36:02Speaker 8: Stephon Castle is multiple defensively. De'Aaron Fox would be one
- 36:05Speaker 8: of the smaller aspects of that defense. And then Devin
- 36:09Speaker 8: Vassell is a physical presence himself. But they were putting
- 36:12Speaker 8: out Julian Champagny last year. Well, he might not be
- 36:15Speaker 8: a one or a two. He's probably a two or
- 36:17Speaker 8: a three. And so he's kind of in that same vein.
- 36:20Speaker 8: So I don't think they lost that much size realistically
- 36:23Speaker 8: going to the three-guard lineup. But Victor Wibonyama is such
- 36:26Speaker 8: a deterring force that when people drive, they see him
- 36:30Speaker 8: even out of the corner of their eye. They retreat.
- 36:33Speaker 8: They stop going towards the basket. So I think no
- 36:36Speaker 8: matter who you put out there, as long as he's
- 36:38Speaker 8: the base and the anchor of that defense, it's kind
- 36:40Speaker 8: of irrelevant.
- 36:41Speaker 4: I want to get to the East a little bit.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Jalen Brown goes to the Sixers. LeBron goes to the Sixers.
- 36:46Speaker 4: It feels like a rebirth of Northeast basketball. The Knicks
- 36:49Speaker 4: are more than relevant. They won the title. The Celtics
- 36:51Speaker 4: are always good. It's a great time to be a
- 36:53Speaker 4: Northeast NBA fan.
- 36:55Speaker 8: Yeah, absolutely. I think those three teams that you mentioned
- 36:59Speaker 8: all feel like that they're going to be in the
- 37:00Speaker 8: thick of things. Certainly the Knicks essentially running it back
- 37:03Speaker 8: with the roster that they had last year, adding Andre
- 37:06Speaker 8: Drummond to replace Mitchell Robinson, who goes to Boston and
- 37:09Speaker 8: feels like he's a great fit for Joe Missoula, just
- 37:12Speaker 8: from a personality standpoint. Maybe not necessarily in terms of
- 37:15Speaker 8: three-point shooting and what we've seen from Missoula teams and
- 37:18Speaker 8: the way they like to play offensively, but I think mentality-wise,
- 37:22Speaker 8: he and Missoula are going to click. I think that
- 37:23Speaker 8: team's going to be really good. It's a really good,
- 37:26Speaker 8: at minimum, regular season team. A team that easily could
- 37:29Speaker 8: end up the top team in the Eastern Conference, which
- 37:31Speaker 8: is a loaded Eastern Conference this year when it's all
- 37:34Speaker 8: said and done. And Philadelphia feels like the scariest playoff team.
- 37:39Speaker 8: I'm curious how it looks for the regular season, but
- 37:41Speaker 8: so long as they're on the dance floor and you've
- 37:43Speaker 8: got to play them seven games and they are fully healthy,
- 37:46Speaker 8: they are going to be a scary out for any
- 37:48Speaker 8: team in the Eastern Conference.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Paxton Perloff here on NBC
- 37:54Speaker 4: Sports Now.
- 37:55Speaker 2: That is Noah Eagle.
- 37:56Speaker 4: I have a little bit of an NBA policy. I
- 37:58Speaker 4: enjoy watching, but also ignore the results of the first
- 38:01Speaker 4: three weeks.
- 38:02Speaker 2: Of the season.
- 38:02Speaker 4: I want to see 20 games before I make any
- 38:04Speaker 4: decisions on any team. That's fair, right?
- 38:06Speaker 2: Totally fair. And the Sixers, of course, look great now,
- 38:10Speaker 2: but they're all healthy. But I'm curious, are they too old?
- 38:13Speaker 2: And I really mean that. Watch Toronto. I know Kawhi's old.
- 38:17Speaker 2: Or watch some of these young teams who are going
- 38:18Speaker 2: to be able to run the floor all night long.
- 38:20Speaker 2: I think that eventually other teams are going to catch
- 38:22Speaker 2: up with the Seekers. I'm not quite as bullish on them,
- 38:24Speaker 2: even though they are my own team. B.J.
- 38:26Speaker 4: Edgecombe's young. Maxie's young. The rest of the guys hurt
- 38:30Speaker 4: the curve, if you know what I mean.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, well, LeBron obviously has got to be
- 38:34Speaker 2: the oldest player in the NBA.
- 38:35Speaker 4: He turns 42 December 30th.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Yeah, but Jalen Brown does not look like the young
- 38:40Speaker 2: spry Jalen Brown, and Joel Embiid has looked old since
- 38:42Speaker 2: he got into the league.
- 38:43Speaker 4: Yeah, he was born old.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I just think that the, you said it yesterday, actually, that,
- 38:48Speaker 2: I can't remember if it was on air, that everyone's
- 38:50Speaker 2: going to get excited about the Sixers after one game.
- 38:53Speaker 5: Yes.
- 38:53Speaker 2: But do not overdo it, because it's a long season.
- 38:56Speaker 4: Yeah, but I think if you can manage Embiid with
- 39:00Speaker 4: 55 games by choice, and somehow he walks into the
- 39:03Speaker 4: playoffs healthy, and LeBron is It's all health to me. Now,
- 39:07Speaker 4: I still think you've got to make a trade for
- 39:08Speaker 4: your bench. Before we go on to the next thing,
- 39:11Speaker 4: I'm curious how people look at the Pistons this year.
- 39:13Speaker 4: It's like the Pistons had that great regular season, but
- 39:16Speaker 4: then they did nothing in the playoffs. And so all
- 39:18Speaker 4: those regular season wins just kind of got washed away,
- 39:20Speaker 4: and they won't get a lot of run.
- 39:21Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I think the narrative around the Pistons
- 39:24Speaker 2: is you need two great players, more than just Kate Cunningham,
- 39:26Speaker 2: because you need somebody who can hit a shot in
- 39:28Speaker 2: the playoffs. So they were not threatened.
- 39:30Speaker 4: And Duren cooled off his second great player.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Yeah, but he's not a creator either. He's a very
- 39:35Speaker 2: good player, but they're not really built for the postseason
- 39:38Speaker 2: right now. By the way, I wish yesterday I'd gone
- 39:41Speaker 2: in a little stronger against the Spurs. because I think...
- 39:44Speaker 2: You wanted to. I kind of did. I think they
- 39:46Speaker 2: did not really belong in the finals last year. They
- 39:48Speaker 2: were a year ahead. And then, Wemby did not look
- 39:51Speaker 2: good yesterday. I do not know if this team is
- 39:53Speaker 2: built to win a title right now.
- 39:54Speaker 4: So you think they may overachieve last year and come
- 39:56Speaker 4: back to earth this year?
- 39:58Speaker 2: Totally. And I don't... I'm not going to say Wemby
- 40:01Speaker 2: is overrated, but people think Wemby is part Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
- 40:05Speaker 2: in his prime, part Magic Johnson. The kid is still young.
- 40:09Speaker 4: Yeah, well, his game is still catching up to his
- 40:11Speaker 4: persona and his look.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 40:13Speaker 4: He can do everything, but yes, he's not 27 years old.
- 40:16Speaker 4: He hasn't entered his peak yet.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and then a lot of people point out they
- 40:20Speaker 2: have a lot of great guards, but none of them
- 40:21Speaker 2: are going to hit a three. That's kind of a
- 40:23Speaker 2: big deal in the NBA.
- 40:24Speaker 4: You need Champagny to hit the threes.
- 40:25Speaker 2: All right.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Also today, Pat Murphy. The manager of the Milwaukee Brewers
- 40:29Speaker 4: was on the Dan Patrick Show. First time having him on,
- 40:32Speaker 4: what a character he was. And Dan asked him about
- 40:34Speaker 4: the pressure or opportunity to win one for the people
- 40:37Speaker 4: of Milwaukee.
- 40:39Speaker 6: It meant so much to so many. If you see
- 40:41Speaker 6: the reactions and you see the people in town, you
- 40:45Speaker 6: see how proud they are of this team. Now, of course,
- 40:49Speaker 6: they want us to go finish it off, and that
- 40:50Speaker 6: won't be an easy task. We're not going to be
- 40:53Speaker 6: in that same kind of underdog role. It'd be damn
- 40:57Speaker 6: nice to see these people get a championship.
- 41:00Speaker 4: This was a really fantastic interview. So when Dan just
- 41:03Speaker 4: got to know, we just got to know. They were
- 41:04Speaker 4: joking the whole time, especially at the back end.
- 41:06Speaker 2: Just got to know. I thought they were best friends.
- 41:08Speaker 4: They felt like they were just riffing and talking like
- 41:10Speaker 4: they'd never done before. But he's one of those guys,
- 41:13Speaker 4: you see why players love him. Because he seems like
- 41:15Speaker 4: a good time, not going to yell at everybody, chew
- 41:17Speaker 4: everybody out. Let's have some fun. Let's play some baseball.
- 41:19Speaker 2: He's a baseball guy. He's a great manager, by the way. Okay,
- 41:21Speaker 2: every week we do NFL Play of the Season, Paul.
- 41:24Speaker 2: And Trey McBride of the Arizona Cardinals is the reigning
- 41:28Speaker 2: NFL Play of the Season, King of the Mountain style.
- 41:31Speaker 2: So we're going to see if anyone can kick out
- 41:33Speaker 2: this play, this incredible catch by arguably the best tight
- 41:37Speaker 2: end in the NFL, Trey McBride.
- 41:39Speaker 4: That is a tough one to beat, man.
- 41:40Speaker 2: All right, well, let's see what we got this week.
- 41:43Speaker 2: I think this might do it. Josh Allen with his backhanded,
- 41:48Speaker 2: I don't know what you call this, a shuttle? Incredible.
- 41:51Speaker 4: It was like a 20-yard shovel pass. It looked like
- 41:53Speaker 4: something Manziel did back at A & M. And for
- 41:56Speaker 4: Josh Allen, because it's Josh Allen. it may not get
- 41:59Speaker 4: the credit it deserves.
- 42:00Speaker 2: I think it deserves all the credit because he's done
- 42:02Speaker 2: a lot of stuff like this. The pure length of
- 42:04Speaker 2: it is unbelievable. And you know what? He had full confidence.
- 42:07Speaker 2: He knew he could throw that pass.
- 42:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it looked like a knuckleball, and he shovels it
- 42:11Speaker 4: as a knuckleball right to his guy. It didn't, like,
- 42:13Speaker 4: float up in the air. And then he quickly turns
- 42:15Speaker 4: to avoid the big hit that was coming. I'm going
- 42:18Speaker 4: to give it to Josh Allen. That was pretty freaky.
- 42:19Speaker 2: I'll even say this. I think that's the number one highlight.
- 42:22Speaker 2: When Josh Allen retires, that's the play they show.
- 42:24Speaker 4: Hopefully not. Hopefully it's not the play that they show.
- 42:27Speaker 2: Hopefully he's going to do a John Elway helicopter in
- 42:29Speaker 2: the Super Bowl.
- 42:30Speaker 4: I hope that his is, I know what you're saying,
- 42:32Speaker 4: and you're right. That's one of those plays that's freaky
- 42:34Speaker 4: even for him. Mahomes has 20 of those. Josh Allen's
- 42:37Speaker 4: are more running than passing.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he has some big passes too, but
- 42:41Speaker 2: to me that's the play of the year, and I
- 42:43Speaker 2: think that's going to stay for a while.
- 42:44Speaker 4: That's good. Good for Josh Allen. I'm sure he's going
- 42:46Speaker 4: to love hearing that he got on not so fast.
- 42:48Speaker 4: Good for you, Josh Allen. All right, coming up next,
- 42:50Speaker 4: constructor criticism and some sound of Arch Manning about his
- 42:53Speaker 4: status at Texas. Stick around. Not so fast. I'm sure
- 42:59Speaker 4: Josh's agent will tell him, and he'll be very excited.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Oh, Josh Allen? I mean, listen, or Hallie Steinfeld, we'll
- 43:04Speaker 2: tell them. She's a huge fan.
- 43:06Speaker 6: Of course.
- 43:06Speaker 2: She's been watching. Always has been. For years.
- 43:10Speaker 5: I haven't put good film on tape the past five weeks,
- 43:16Speaker 5: and I'm going to be better. And I'm going to
- 43:18Speaker 5: be better for my teammates, I'm going to be better
- 43:19Speaker 5: for myself, and be better for the coaches. The losing
- 43:21Speaker 5: is never fun, and not playing well isn't fun. But
- 43:23Speaker 5: I think this team is built for adversity, I'm built
- 43:26Speaker 5: for adversity, and we're going to respond. I know that.
- 43:28Speaker 5: It's hard to not have a chip on my shoulder
- 43:29Speaker 5: right now.
- 43:33Speaker 2: That was Arch Manning, of course. Welcome back, not so fast.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Paps and Perloff. Now, I'll tell you one thing about Arch.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Last year, it looked really bad at this point.
- 43:40Speaker 8: Right.
- 43:41Speaker 2: Remember, they lost to Florida, just like they did this year.
- 43:43Speaker 2: And Will Leach, our buddy, wrote a column saying he's
- 43:46Speaker 2: college football's first big-time bust. And then they turned it around.
- 43:49Speaker 2: They lost to Georgia, but they had a great end
- 43:52Speaker 2: of the season. So I wonder if people are sort
- 43:54Speaker 2: of overreacting to Arch's struggles.
- 43:57Speaker 4: The default thing is to overreact either way for Arch Manning.
- 44:00Speaker 4: If he had a big game against Ole Miss and
- 44:02Speaker 4: throws for four touchdowns, he is now the number one
- 44:04Speaker 4: pick of the draft and all is well. It's always
- 44:06Speaker 4: somewhere in between. He's a good college quarterback. who has
- 44:09Speaker 4: some hiccups in big situations. Very fair to say.
- 44:12Speaker 2: It's a whole team. They can't run the ball. Colin
- 44:14Speaker 2: Simmons might be out, their best player. Their receivers are
- 44:17Speaker 2: still somewhat inconsistent. They need to protect them a little bit.
- 44:21Speaker 2: Maybe it's him not getting rid of the ball, but
- 44:22Speaker 2: it doesn't feel like he has more than a second
- 44:24Speaker 2: on any given pass.
- 44:25Speaker 4: No, he has no blocking and no running game, but
- 44:27Speaker 4: nobody likes to talk about that. Perspective never works with Archibald.
- 44:30Speaker 2: That being said, he has not played well. His decision-making
- 44:32Speaker 2: has been poor.
- 44:33Speaker 4: Especially in the fourth quarter, which is when you can
- 44:35Speaker 4: clean it all up in the fourth quarter. Let's take
- 44:36Speaker 4: a look at Texas schedule C because it's pretty brutal
- 44:39Speaker 4: coming up here. Texas has Ole Miss, which is Ole
- 44:42Speaker 4: Miss is trying to get right back in the thing.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I mean, Ole Miss got killed by Florida too, so
- 44:46Speaker 2: you never know.
- 44:47Speaker 4: For Ole Miss and Texas, this is a playoff game.
- 44:49Speaker 4: Losers basically-ish going home. You have a lot of work
- 44:53Speaker 4: to do. But Texas has a lot of opportunity and
- 44:56Speaker 4: a lot of problems coming up.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, they might not get Kamario Taylor in
- 44:58Speaker 2: that Mississippi State game. You know, who knows in the SEC?
- 45:02Speaker 4: Missouri's week to week.
- 45:03Speaker 2: All of these teams. It doesn't matter what that number
- 45:05Speaker 2: is in front of them. You have no idea. Like
- 45:07Speaker 2: at LSU, no idea what to expect.
- 45:10Speaker 4: All right, Perloff, let's play a little Remember When. It's
- 45:12Speaker 4: something that's like this day in sports history, but this
- 45:14Speaker 4: is not exactly sports history. It's a little bit of
- 45:16Speaker 4: TV history. One of my favorite shows, one of your
- 45:19Speaker 4: favorite shows of all time, Friday Night Lights, the TV show,
- 45:22Speaker 4: debuted 20 years ago this week on NBC. You remember
- 45:27Speaker 4: that show?
- 45:27Speaker 2: It was very good.
- 45:28Speaker 4: Based off the book... then the movie, then the TV show.
- 45:31Speaker 4: And people were like, a TV show off this? And
- 45:33Speaker 4: it hit right away. Kyle Chandler playing the coach of
- 45:36Speaker 4: the Dillon Panthers. It was fantastic. You loved that show, right?
- 45:38Speaker 2: Oh, the best. It had that amazing soundtrack. I think
- 45:41Speaker 2: it was explosions in the sky. Jesse Plemons, who later
- 45:45Speaker 2: became a superstar.
- 45:46Speaker 4: He was a role player on this show.
- 45:47Speaker 2: Yeah, but you could tell he was special from his
- 45:50Speaker 2: first show.
- 45:50Speaker 4: Connie Britton.
- 45:51Speaker 2: I was all in on this show.
- 45:53Speaker 4: Great show. One of the all-times. A couple of questions
- 45:55Speaker 4: about Friday Night Lights. How many years was Tim Riggins
- 45:58Speaker 4: in high school? Because I did the math. He seemed
- 46:00Speaker 4: to play football for six years, and this was not
- 46:02Speaker 4: the COVID era. Whatever happened to J.D.
- 46:04Speaker 5: McCoy?
- 46:05Speaker 4: Remember the guy, the cocky kid? He was playing really
- 46:08Speaker 4: well at Dillon. And then Vince Howard, played by the
- 46:11Speaker 4: great actor Michael B.
- 46:12Speaker 5: Jordan.
- 46:12Speaker 4: He went from The Wire right to Friday Night Lights.
- 46:14Speaker 4: We had him once on The Dan Patrick Show, Michael B. Jordan,
- 46:17Speaker 4: the great actor. And we asked him to recreate his
- 46:19Speaker 4: role of Vince Howard and pick where he went to school.
- 46:21Speaker 4: Look on the screen. There he is, Michael B., in studio,
- 46:25Speaker 4: picking his school. Passes on Texas, passes on Michigan, and
- 46:29Speaker 4: he told us Michigan State was his school.
- 46:32Speaker 2: Why? I can't remember why he picked Michigan State. It
- 46:34Speaker 2: should have been Texas. I asked him.
- 46:35Speaker 4: He said when he was a kid, he saw Michigan
- 46:38Speaker 4: State football on TV and fell in love with the
- 46:39Speaker 4: uniforms and the helmets and became a Michigan State fan forever.
- 46:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:43Speaker 4: That's random.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Listen, can you name a great quarterback who ever went
- 46:47Speaker 2: to Michigan State? You got your Hoyer cousins. Yeah, I
- 46:50Speaker 2: don't know.
- 46:50Speaker 3: Jeff Smoker?
- 46:51Speaker 4: You were a big Jeff Smoker fan.
- 46:52Speaker 2: I mean, listen, that would have been controversial. If he
- 46:56Speaker 2: turned down A & M in Texas?
- 46:58Speaker 4: I wish Vince Howard would have gone to Michigan State.
- 46:59Speaker 4: They wish he would have gone to Michigan State. All right, Pearl,
- 47:01Speaker 4: it's time for a little constructive criticism. Feedback on Twitter,
- 47:05Speaker 4: social media, MySpace, whatever you got.
- 47:07Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 47:08Speaker 4: We tweeted this. Sixers shot 11 for 40 from three
- 47:12Speaker 4: and still beat the Knicks. I think that's a good sign.
- 47:14Speaker 4: It's also a bad sign from Johnny Diehard. Your thoughts, Pearl?
- 47:18Speaker 2: Yeah, no, he's right. I was actually saying to nobody
- 47:20Speaker 2: during the game, man, they cannot hit the side of
- 47:22Speaker 2: the barn. I have a joke that I do at
- 47:24Speaker 2: the Dan Patrick Show Man Cave. Whenever someone misses a shot,
- 47:27Speaker 2: I ask politely, do you have a permit for all
- 47:28Speaker 2: the bricks you're laying down on the studio?
- 47:30Speaker 4: How does that go over with people?
- 47:31Speaker 2: People don't like it.
- 47:32Speaker 4: They don't like it.
- 47:32Speaker 2: But I was actually thinking about that to the Sixers
- 47:34Speaker 2: because they were just missing. Joel Embiid was hitting the
- 47:36Speaker 2: back of the rim and the rebound was coming out
- 47:38Speaker 2: 40 feet. And then Edgecombe can't shoot. And Maxie was
- 47:41Speaker 2: not shooting well. So I wonder about them as a
- 47:44Speaker 2: title team when they don't really shoot well.
- 47:46Speaker 4: Hitting three seems important in basketball. All right, next one.
- 47:49Speaker 4: This is a running bit on the show. This young
- 47:51Speaker 4: man in Milwaukee. Here he is. He got the tickets
- 47:55Speaker 4: the other day. And then here's his parents showing him
- 47:57Speaker 4: the clip from yesterday on the show with us showing
- 48:00Speaker 4: him getting the tickets.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Oh, I love it.
- 48:01Speaker 4: So this young fella apparently doesn't have school and is
- 48:04Speaker 4: watching our show or is maybe watching the late session,
- 48:06Speaker 4: the 5 p.m. showing on NBCSN.
- 48:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, are we going to show it if
- 48:11Speaker 2: they're watching this now?
- 48:12Speaker 4: Yeah, it's going to continue. I told him to eat
- 48:14Speaker 4: his vegetables. Mom seemed to like that.
- 48:16Speaker 2: So it's from Dan Casper, I believe the name is.
- 48:19Speaker 4: Yeah, Dan Casper, a media guy in Milwaukee.
- 48:21Speaker 2: Oh, I love it. It makes me think of Dave Casper,
- 48:23Speaker 2: one of my favorite old-time NFL players. He goes to
- 48:25Speaker 2: the post, former Raiders tight end. No relation.
- 48:27Speaker 4: All right, it's time for the feel-good here on Not
- 48:29Speaker 4: So Fast before we get you up out of here.
- 48:31Speaker 2: Here we go, Pearl.
- 48:33Speaker 4: Banner raising. Those banners have a lot. Those rafters have
- 48:37Speaker 4: a lot of dust in them. They had to clean
- 48:38Speaker 4: them first. There it goes. And then a local bar,
- 48:42Speaker 4: Mustang Harry's, just blocks away. I've been to this place
- 48:44Speaker 4: before from what I've heard. They raised a banner. This
- 48:48Speaker 4: could catch on at sports bars.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Wow, I love it. Like an official event to raise banners,
- 48:52Speaker 2: to decorate the walls?
- 48:53Speaker 4: Yeah, you charge a cover and say you want to
- 48:55Speaker 4: be there for the banner raising, and people raise their glasses,
- 48:57Speaker 4: raise the banners, raise their blood alcohol level.
- 49:00Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it's pretty good. I mean, the whole city
- 49:02Speaker 2: of New York has been a party for four months.
- 49:04Speaker 4: How are you dealing with it?
- 49:05Speaker 2: Not great. Not great. My wife's like, they're playing tonight.
- 49:09Speaker 2: I'm like, you mean the Sixers? She's like, no, the Knicks.
- 49:12Speaker 2: How did this happen?
- 49:13Speaker 4: I don't know, because if you would have said last
- 49:15Speaker 4: year the Knicks are winning the title, nobody had them.
- 49:17Speaker 4: 53 wins in the regular season.
- 49:18Speaker 2: The funny thing is, some of those people who got
- 49:20Speaker 2: rings last night, never heard of them. No.
- 49:21Speaker 4: All right, no MAAC football tonight. You've got to watch
- 49:24Speaker 4: a lot of NBA tonight. And tune in to the
- 49:26Speaker 4: Dan Pat Show tomorrow morning, 9 a.m. Eastern, right here
- 49:28Speaker 4: on NBC Sports Now on Peacock. Then hang with us.
- 49:31Speaker 4: Pass the pearl off. I'm not so fast.
- 49:34Speaker 3: There it is.
- 49:34Speaker 2: We need MAAC football, though. That'd be nice, but full
- 49:36Speaker 2: NBA slate.
- 49:37Speaker 4: Full NBA slate.
