- 0:00Speaker 1: The brutal death of that poor wee boy, Malachi Subek
- 0:04Speaker 1: is a disgrace. No one will argue with that. It
- 0:07Speaker 1: was basically torture, horrible stuff, and now we have these
- 0:10Speaker 1: debates popping up about it. Back in the news another
- 0:12Speaker 1: report being done. Should the minister front for interviews that
- 0:16Speaker 1: was the focus of an article yesterday. Karen Shaw, herself
- 0:19Speaker 1: a product of the foster care system, criticized, didn't attend
- 0:24Speaker 1: or didn't do any interviews. Apparently yesterday during the day
- 0:27Speaker 1: she was busy attended a pre planned lunch event to
- 0:30Speaker 1: eat some lamb on Parliament's lawn. Criticized for this, she
- 0:34Speaker 1: should have, according to this irn Z story, presumably been
- 0:37Speaker 1: inside answering questions about why more wasn't being done about
- 0:41Speaker 1: this boy's murder, which you might recall was back in
- 0:43Speaker 1: twenty twenty one. Calvin Davis, you may recall, also came
- 0:48Speaker 1: in for a hammering from the media when he was
- 0:50Speaker 1: the minister. So I think we should all be really
- 0:53Speaker 1: clear at the outset. Neither Karen nor Calvin nor any
- 0:56Speaker 1: politician is responsible for the deaths of baby. The fact
- 1:01Speaker 1: we have no culprit for the death of baby ru
- 1:03Speaker 1: In the hut is you could say the fault of
- 1:06Speaker 1: the police, but ultimately, as with all of these cases,
- 1:10Speaker 1: fault lies with those who do the killing and those
- 1:13Speaker 1: who do the covering up. You know, the family who
- 1:16Speaker 1: don't speak to police, the partner who won't dib in
- 1:18Speaker 1: their other half. The are the real culprits here. Yes,
- 1:21Speaker 1: there are things we can learn, things we can do,
- 1:23Speaker 1: things that can change. We can change the name of
- 1:26Speaker 1: an agency. God We've done that enough times. We can
- 1:29Speaker 1: add a red flag system here. We can appoint a
- 1:32Speaker 1: children's commissioner there. But ultimately does any of it do
- 1:35Speaker 1: any good. We average around ten or eleven kids killed
- 1:39Speaker 1: by homicide every year in New Zealand. Ask ot or
- 1:43Speaker 1: sifts before them, and they'll tell you that reports of
- 1:45Speaker 1: abuse seem to be trending down, but they have a
- 1:47Speaker 1: new thing called reports of concern. They are going up.
- 1:51Speaker 1: We actually don't know for certain if this is getting
- 1:53Speaker 1: better or worse, because there's apparently a data lag. I know,
- 1:56Speaker 1: it's an incredible thing to have a data lag on,
- 1:59Speaker 1: but here we are. You would have to say, though,
- 2:02Speaker 1: on the whole, the pictures not rosy, and no amount
- 2:05Speaker 1: of stalking MPs around Parliament is going to fix it.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Any fix surely has to be in the home. For
- 2:12Speaker 1: more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge. Listen live to
- 2:15Speaker 1: News Talks at B from five am weekdays, or follow
