- 0:00Welcome to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. We get together with Dan Hurley
- 0:05as often as possible, sometimes on a weekly basis, sometimes a little longer
- 0:10than that. But coach number one for all those weeks, six weeks in
- 0:14a row, won ten games during that stretch, ten and one. Second
- 0:20longest in Yukon history stretches Number one. The ninety eight ninety nine team that
- 0:25went on to win the championship was the number one for ten weeks, seventeen
- 0:28and one. Do you ever stop to think to yourself, Wow, I'm
- 0:33in this place. They've won these championships. Now I've won one, and
- 0:39you seem to be adding to the legacy. It doesn't seem to be a
- 0:42problem in the sense that, you know, all of the stuff that's stacked
- 0:46up there on the walls and the pictures of the NBA guys, that hasn't
- 0:49really, you know, gotten in the way for you. It seems,
- 0:53yeah, you know, the it's obviously what we it's what we all came
- 0:58here to do. It's it's been a lot of hard work that's gotten us
- 1:00here. Obviously, some you know, some some really hard times, some
- 1:04breakthroughs. I think there are times where you do you know, on acr
- 1:08ride home, you know, or at different points in the staff meeting where
- 1:12you know we will have a level of appreciation for for where we have things
- 1:17right now. And you know, as far as the ranking goes, I
- 1:21mean, you know, you know, we had it for a while and
- 1:23uh, you know, it was fun and we enjoyed it. But I
- 1:26think when you get to this time of year, you know, if somebody
- 1:30else is going to happen number one, uh, you know, they can
- 1:34enjoy it for a little while. We're trying to trying to win championships this
- 1:38time of year, trying to win win tournaments, trying to win the regular
- 1:42season. Yeah, the regular season has been something you've been talking about for
- 1:46a lot of weeks. You're closing in on it. You got three games
- 1:49left, two on the road, Uh in Seaton Hall of course, coming
- 1:53up on Sunday. We'll talk about that. But before we get to all
- 1:57that, why is the regular season that meaningful in the sense that these days
- 2:02everyone talks about, Oh, you got to win your conference championship, you
- 2:06got to win the NCAA championship, let's get to a regional championship. But
- 2:09you've been talking about this Big East regular season for quite a while this year,
- 2:14and I wonder what goes into that, What is the motivation, what's
- 2:19the driving force for you to win this thing in the regular season? Yeah,
- 2:23you know, you want to accomplish as much as you can when uh
- 2:28as a player, as a coach. Uh, you know, in the
- 2:30end, you know, we'll all spend whatever time in the in the sport,
- 2:36and it's you know what what you know, what what can you What
- 2:38have you accomplished? You know what have you won? You know what what
- 2:42have you done? I think we all have a back of our baseball card,
- 2:46so to speak, that is going to speak to you know, just
- 2:50what we accomplished. Obviously, we love the game. We we love hard
- 2:53work. Yeah, but we we also pursue things and uh, you know
- 2:57we we're pursuing, yeah, regular season championship, which hasn't been done here
- 3:01in a while, and it's very hard to do it. It's a real
- 3:05measure of your toughness to be able to do it, to be able to
- 3:07win a championship over the course of twenty games in such a brutal league.
- 3:12Yeah, and Dan, it's it's a kind of league that this year,
- 3:15especially, I mean, nine of the eleven teams are certainly capable of beating
- 3:21anybody. Georgetown De Paul struggling these days. But you talk about I don't
- 3:27care who it is, Butler, Providence, Saint John's just beat Creton the
- 3:30other day. When you try to explain that to people, what do you
- 3:38get back from people when you say this conference is really hard? Sometimes people
- 3:43overlook this conference and I never understand that. Yeah, well, you know,
- 3:47we play, you know, when we play at Fox, and we
- 3:50play obviously on CBS, and but a lot of people, you know that
- 3:55they you know, they'll listen to ESPN or they'll put on you know,
- 4:00the college basketball coverage of ESPN, and and uh, you know it's hard
- 4:04for us to as a league to get their attention because you know, we
- 4:09don't play on that network, uh at this point. And and we're able
- 4:14to obviously have them on campus, which was great, But I think their
- 4:16conference gets overlooked. You know, it's for me, it's it's got to
- 4:23be uh, you know, six or seven bid league this year, you
- 4:28know, and uh, you hope that we that everyone gets enough wins to
- 4:31get rewarded that Yeah, speaking of ESPN, being on campus. That was
- 4:35that was a treat for those who got to come in the building and watch
- 4:40everything that happened. And it is meaningful to have, you know, guys
- 4:44like Seth Greenberg and Jay Billison company on campus. What what do the guys
- 4:48get out of that? The players do they get impressed by those kind of
- 4:51things. Are they just doing their own thing oblivious to it all? No,
- 4:58they're I think it's definitely a lot of juice and a lot of electricity.
- 5:03I think, you know, the day before too, you know,
- 5:08just to have you know, have the students camped out, and to have
- 5:11the trucks, you know, and on campus, it was a big deal.
- 5:15And yeah, I think it certainly helped with the atmosphere and and it's
- 5:21I think, you know, it means you're doing some really good things with
- 5:25with your program. And on that day, Dan, I had to bring
- 5:30this up, but I know you had a ton of chances to chuck it
- 5:33in from mid court. You've done it before many times in your career.
- 5:38However, on that day, yeah, you were unable to come up with
- 5:42the goods. And I'm a little surprised by that, but I also wasn't
- 5:46ready for that and you know it's game day and I game day, I
- 5:53run and I run, you know, I run distance, and I run
- 5:57it at a pretty brisk pace. And then I also, you know,
- 6:00I'll do some some body weight, you know, push up, some squats,
- 6:04some different things. So I was tired a little bit and a little
- 6:08fatigue in my upper body. Plus the basketballs they were not They were like
- 6:12the type that you would autograph. There were like real basketballs, and they
- 6:15were slippery. They say, well, rip, Hamilton made it. Well
- 6:17rip. The reason why rips? As a retired Jersey here and Seaton Hall
- 6:24barely acknowledges me. No, wait a minute, wait a minute. All
- 6:27right, we have to go to a break. We're not gonna leave that.
- 6:30We're going to talk about Hamilton fire and one in from fifty feet when
- 6:33we return. This is the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show with Dan Hurley.
- 6:38I'm Mike Crispino here on lair field
