Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Are You Lying to Yourself?
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily Avadi here coming to you from my
- 0:23Speaker 1: hotel room in Germany.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Not an every day it sentence for me.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I'm out here this weekend visiting Adidas headquarters, joining in
- 0:34Speaker 1: on some fund surrounding.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Their Roads to Records event.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Essentially what that is if you didn't know, their global
- 0:43Speaker 1: headquarters is located here in Herzel, Germany.
- 0:47Speaker 2: They are holding this event which.
- 0:51Speaker 1: The whole goal is to break records with athletes in
- 0:54Speaker 1: the five kilometer, ten kilometer and half marathon. Tons of
- 0:58Speaker 1: running talent out here. Really exciting to be able to
- 1:02Speaker 1: have the opportunity to witness it and to join in
- 1:07Speaker 1: on a little five k run they're having on Saturday
- 1:10Speaker 1: for us normal humans and really get to experience all
- 1:14Speaker 1: that is their headquarters. I've been here once before, in
- 1:19Speaker 1: twenty sixteen, and that experience this is like a really
- 1:25Speaker 1: full circle moment for me. When I came here in
- 1:28Speaker 1: twenty sixteen, I hadn't started the show yet. I was
- 1:33Speaker 1: recently laid off from my job at self when the
- 1:36Speaker 1: magazine folded, and I remember coming here and feeling so
- 1:39Speaker 1: self conscious and nervous about who I was like when
- 1:43Speaker 1: I introduced myself to other people that I was meeting,
- 1:47Speaker 1: whether they were other editors in the health and wellness space,
- 1:51Speaker 1: if they were perhaps new influencers. At the time, Adidas
- 1:54Speaker 1: was just opening up and really working on and investing
- 1:58Speaker 1: in their global Ambassador program, and I came on the
- 2:01Speaker 1: trip with a ton of their original global ambassadors, and
- 2:05Speaker 1: so I felt really really nervous and like unsettled about, like, Hi,
- 2:10Speaker 1: my name is Emily Body And what follows that? Now
- 2:15Speaker 1: again a really full circle moment. So many years later,
- 2:18Speaker 1: I am in a completely different place, both personally and professionally,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and so to be back here and you know you're
- 2:26Speaker 1: listening to this show, to have my own thing, to
- 2:29Speaker 1: have done so much work on myself as well, to
- 2:32Speaker 1: be really firm in who I am, what my foundations are,
- 2:36Speaker 1: what my values are. It feels really special and I'm
- 2:40Speaker 1: really really proud of that. That's not necessarily what this
- 2:45Speaker 1: five minute Friday episode is about today. What I want
- 2:47Speaker 1: to talk today about is the idea of and I
- 2:52Speaker 1: talk about this regularly on the show, but it's been
- 2:54Speaker 1: really really relevant lately, fact versus fiction and the stories
- 2:59Speaker 1: that we're telling ourselves. I forever have said the sentence
- 3:04Speaker 1: I am not good at napping. This is like kind
- 3:07Speaker 1: of comical now that I'm saying it out loud, but
- 3:09Speaker 1: I always have wanted to be the kind of person
- 3:13Speaker 1: that was good at just like taking thirty minutes. I,
- 3:17Speaker 1: as you know, and by nature an early morning human.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I love getting up and getting stuff done first thing
- 3:23Speaker 1: in the day, but sometimes that brings about a fair
- 3:27Speaker 1: amount of tiredness, as one could expect as the hours
- 3:33Speaker 1: go on, and especially coming out here completely swapping a
- 3:39Speaker 1: sleep schedule, if only for a few days.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I got a couple of hours of sleep on the flight.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Thankfully, I got in and I knew that I needed
- 3:47Speaker 1: to definitely catch at least an hour nap in the
- 3:52Speaker 1: break I had before heading over.
- 3:54Speaker 2: To their global headquarters.
- 3:56Speaker 1: And this would be, I would say, the second or
- 4:01Speaker 1: third quote unquote successful nap that I have taken this year.
- 4:07Speaker 2: I'm like laughing at myself because this just sounds so ridiculous.
- 4:11Speaker 1: The thing is is that, again, I used to tell
- 4:14Speaker 1: myself that I wasn't good at napping, And what I
- 4:16Speaker 1: realized when I told myself that was that I started
- 4:21Speaker 1: to believe it and I wasn't even giving myself the
- 4:24Speaker 1: opportunity to rest when I really desired it because I
- 4:29Speaker 1: was resistant to the idea in my head it was
- 4:32Speaker 1: just something that I could not do again. I'm not
- 4:34Speaker 1: talking about like climbing Mount Everest. I would say that
- 4:37Speaker 1: right now it is a fact I probably can't climb
- 4:40Speaker 1: Mount Everest.
- 4:42Speaker 3: But napping, like laying down, taking a break. I was
- 4:46Speaker 3: so resistant to the idea of like allowing myself this reprieve.
- 4:51Speaker 3: And so when I stopped believing the story that I
- 4:54Speaker 3: was telling myself, this story you are incapable of napping,
- 4:57Speaker 3: You're bad at napping, And I allowed myself to simply
- 5:01Speaker 3: lay and rest and accept whatever result happened. I am
- 5:05Speaker 3: getting better at not believing my own bs, if that
- 5:11Speaker 3: makes sense, at getting too a place where I am
- 5:14Speaker 3: not just accepting the stories. And of course this takeaway
- 5:20Speaker 3: that I'm sharing with you is bigger than just napping.
- 5:24Speaker 3: It's like the sentence I'm not a runner or I
- 5:27Speaker 3: can't run. It's like, okay, maybe right now you don't
- 5:32Speaker 3: enjoy running, or you don't feel as though you're good
- 5:36Speaker 3: at it. But what happens if you reshift, reframe, better
- 5:41Speaker 3: word that narrative. What happens if you stop running? How
- 5:45Speaker 3: you feel as though you should be running and running
- 5:49Speaker 3: for a minute and walking for a minute, and running
- 5:51Speaker 3: for a minute and walking for a minute, and not
- 5:53Speaker 3: comparing that activity to that of someone else who maybe
- 5:58Speaker 3: has different feelings on running.
- 6:00Speaker 2: You see where I'm going with this.
- 6:03Speaker 1: When you can separate fact from fiction, you have a
- 6:07Speaker 1: lot of opportunity, and you can separate the stories you're
- 6:11Speaker 1: telling yourself versus what is actually reality. So I am
- 6:17Speaker 1: allowing myself the grace to get better at taking a
- 6:21Speaker 1: nap every once in a while, and that grace enabled
- 6:24Speaker 1: me to accumulate, over a wonky travel day about five
- 6:29Speaker 1: and a half hours of sleep total, which, hey, it's
- 6:33Speaker 1: better than no hours of sleep total. I will take it.
- 6:36Speaker 1: My question to you this week, my thought problem for
- 6:38Speaker 1: you this week? What is something in your life a
- 6:41Speaker 1: fact from fiction moment? What's a story that you're telling
- 6:44Speaker 1: yourself that you can break, something that you can have
- 6:48Speaker 1: some grease with? Again, how can you separate fact from
- 6:51Speaker 1: fiction in your life?
- 6:53Speaker 2: And now a listener question.
- 6:57Speaker 4: Hey, Emily, this is Sarah from Boss. I've been listening
- 7:02Speaker 4: for a while and I'm not a runner at all,
- 7:05Speaker 4: but I love the interviews that you give with inspiring people.
- 7:10Speaker 4: My question to you is how are you navigating the
- 7:13Speaker 4: world of investing. I am in the boat right now
- 7:18Speaker 4: where I'm trying to organize my finances and I remember
- 7:22Speaker 4: seeing on your Instagram stories that you.
- 7:24Speaker 5: Also started investing. So what's your strategy? Here are you
- 7:28Speaker 5: meeting with the financial advisor? How is your investing journey going.
- 7:33Speaker 5: I'd love to hear some feedback and some tips.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I love going back to the listener questions after having
- 7:40Speaker 1: the opportunity to travel and knowing who the hurdlers are
- 7:44Speaker 1: that are calling in and asking them. I met Sarah
- 7:48Speaker 1: up in Boston. She is fabulous and I am just
- 7:52Speaker 1: I'm happy to hear your voice, Sarah investing. It's I'm
- 7:56Speaker 1: working on it right So as of now, I work
- 8:00Speaker 1: with an accountant. I was referred to an accountant that
- 8:04Speaker 1: specializes working with individuals who are contractors.
- 8:08Speaker 2: They have a lot of ten onion nines.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I am one of those type of humans, and I obviously,
- 8:14Speaker 1: well not obviously, but I have my own LLC that
- 8:17Speaker 1: I do all of my work under, and so I
- 8:20Speaker 1: work with an accountant when it comes to navigating my
- 8:22Speaker 1: taxes and everything like that, and also talk to him
- 8:25Speaker 1: a little bit about strategic where I could play some
- 8:31Speaker 1: of my money. Last year I opened up an earnest
- 8:34Speaker 1: in earnest and interest earning savings account, so now I'm
- 8:39Speaker 1: earning money on my money over there. I also put
- 8:42Speaker 1: a little bit of money in cryptocurrency. I felt like
- 8:44Speaker 1: it was like the thing that I was open to
- 8:47Speaker 1: experimenting with not a ton and I just did that
- 8:51Speaker 1: using Coinbase, the app. I don't open it regularly because
- 8:56Speaker 1: it just fluctuates so much, so that's kind of a
- 8:59Speaker 1: long term thing. I have a four to oh one
- 9:01Speaker 1: K from when I worked in house at Conde Nast
- 9:04Speaker 1: and Rodale. I also have an IRA that I do
- 9:07Speaker 1: the mac contrib max contribution every year, which I believe
- 9:11Speaker 1: at this point is six thousand dollars. And beyond that,
- 9:14Speaker 1: I am really interested in getting involved in investing in stocks,
- 9:20Speaker 1: and especially after my conversation with Jacqueline Johnson, I'll link
- 9:24Speaker 1: that in the show notes. She's the co founder of
- 9:26Speaker 1: Creating Cultivate and now has a fund called New Money Ventures.
- 9:30Speaker 1: I feel like really excited about learning more about doing that,
- 9:36Speaker 1: about putting my money places. Not that I have like
- 9:38Speaker 1: copious amounts of extra money laying around, but I do
- 9:41Speaker 1: know that long term investing in stocks and maybe companies,
- 9:46Speaker 1: and maybe one day I can be a person that
- 9:48Speaker 1: Angel invests somewhere.
- 9:50Speaker 2: What I've learned about that specifically.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Is that it doesn't need to be like, I don't
- 9:55Speaker 1: need to say like I have one hundred thousand dollars
- 9:56Speaker 1: to give you, because I certainly do not.
- 9:58Speaker 2: But sometimes Angel and are.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Just like a much lower barrier to entry. Maybe it's
- 10:06Speaker 1: a thousand or five thousand or ten thousand. Again, this
- 10:09Speaker 1: is a lot of money, so I'm not saying it lightly,
- 10:11Speaker 1: but I'm just having a fun time learning more about.
- 10:16Speaker 2: The whole space.
- 10:18Speaker 1: And I'd like to keep having conversations, and I think
- 10:20Speaker 1: that's important that we have open conversations about how to
- 10:24Speaker 1: do that. And I know that money can be like
- 10:27Speaker 1: a really taboo thing. Everyone is in a different place
- 10:30Speaker 1: and has different priorities on how they want to use it,
- 10:34Speaker 1: spend it, save it. But I think that we can
- 10:36Speaker 1: all agree that financial wellness and financial health is super important,
- 10:41Speaker 1: So the more open we can be about it, the better.
- 10:43Speaker 1: So yeah, I think that kind of sums up where
- 10:45Speaker 1: I'm at with my money, just trying to make smarter decisions.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I put a certain amount in my savings every month,
- 10:50Speaker 1: put a certain amount and a separate bank account that
- 10:52Speaker 1: I have for rent.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Every month.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I put a certain amount in a separate account that
- 10:55Speaker 1: I have for travel every month, and obviously my regular
- 10:57Speaker 1: expenses and everything.
- 10:58Speaker 2: So just try to be more diligent.
- 11:01Speaker 1: With this as I get older, with the goal of
- 11:03Speaker 1: one day, hopefully you know, owning something, not just renting forever.
- 11:09Speaker 2: And That's where I'm at. And that's it for this week.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Thanks so much for listening, Thanks for following along with Hurdle.
- 11:15Speaker 1: If you're not doing so yet, head on over to

- 11:21Speaker 1: a Body and I'm gonna make this call out again.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I do it regularly, but listener questions, I want yours,
- 11:29Speaker 1: I need yours. I want to answer more questions, so
- 11:32Speaker 1: please call in with one. I'd love to answer it
- 11:34Speaker 1: on the show. The link to do that is in
- 11:37Speaker 1: the show notes. Another Hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
