Speaker 3: do tomorrow. So we'll talk to Jasonontwella about that a

Speaker 3: But first, Small Business Saturday is this Saturday. It's a
• 2:41
Speaker 3: day dedicated to patronizing the small businesses that make America great.
• 2:45
Speaker 3: Get several to choose from several here in Thekanaal Valley.
• 2:48
Speaker 3: You know, Downtown Charleston is plenty, as do South Charleston,
• 2:51
Speaker 3: Dunbark and Austiny, Saint Albans, Nitro. You get the point.
• 2:55
Speaker 3: And one city that really and has for some time,
• 2:57
Speaker 3: embraces the whole small Business Saturday thing it's the city
• 3:00
Speaker 3: of Hurricane. Mayor Scott Edwards joins us. Now, Mayor, good morning,
• 3:03
Speaker 3: welcome to the show.
• 3:05
Speaker 5: Good morning to you. How are you doing today?
• 3:07
Speaker 3: I'm doing fine. And as I have done, Mayor, with
• 3:10
Speaker 3: every guest that I've had on the show, regardless of
• 3:12
Speaker 3: their background or whatever, over the last week or so,
• 3:15
Speaker 3: I have to ask you the same question I've asked
• 3:17
Speaker 3: everyone else. Your favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal? Now together,
• 3:23
Speaker 3: this is all good. I'm talking about food. With your
• 3:25
  Speaker 3: your favorite part.
• 3:27
Speaker 5: It's deviled eggs, without question.
• 3:29
Speaker 3: That's the I think that's the second deviled eggs I've had.
• 3:34
Speaker 6: The devil well, without question, there is there is nothing
• 3:37
Speaker 6: better than deviled eggs.
• 3:39
Speaker 3: Life makes Yeah, So what what does it makes them
• 3:41
Speaker 3: so special? If you don't mind my asking, and what
• 3:43
  Speaker 3: time should.
• 3:43
Speaker 5: I be there tomorrow, you can get well, we're eating
• 3:46
Speaker 5: it too, so come on over.
• 3:48
  Speaker 3: Okay, all right?
• 3:48
Speaker 5: So what makes me look good? I don't know. I
• 3:51
Speaker 5: don't know what makes them special? They're so good, you know.
• 3:53
Speaker 6: I get them a couple of times a year and
• 3:55
Speaker 6: that's it. But really Thanksgiving, I eat a lot of
• 3:57
Speaker 6: deviled eggs. I ate a tremendous amount.
• 3:59
  Speaker 5: I love them.
• 4:00
Speaker 3: I made a common mayor on the earlier this week,
• 4:03
Speaker 3: my wife makes saracha deviled eggs and I don't want that,
• 4:07
Speaker 3: I do. I want all the spice you can give me,
• 4:09
Speaker 3: all right, So all right, So you know I've lived
• 4:12
Speaker 3: mayor in a Hurricane area for ten years now, and
• 4:14
Speaker 3: every year my wife and I go downtown Hurricane for
• 4:17
Speaker 3: small Business Saturday. You got lots of locally owned shops
• 4:22
Speaker 3: that down there in Hurricane. It's kind of become our
• 4:25
Speaker 3: tradition on that Saturday. You guys and Hurricane really have
• 4:27
Speaker 3: embraced this thing pretty much from day one.
• 4:30
Speaker 6: Yeah, well, you know, we love we love the downtown area,
• 4:33
Speaker 6: and we love all of our small businesses and Dave
• 4:36
Speaker 6: as you know, we you know, we promote our small
• 4:38
Speaker 6: businesses year around. We want people to shop local shops
• 4:41
Speaker 6: small all the time, but.
• 4:43
Speaker 5: Especially this Saturday. The Saturday is huge.
• 4:47
Speaker 6: It can get them over the hump. It can really
• 4:49
Speaker 6: help them have a good year. But and you know,
• 4:54
Speaker 6: you know, and I see, like you know, baseball teams
• 4:57
Speaker 6: and other other teams, they go into these all businesses
• 5:00
Speaker 6: and ask for donations. And I always tell those folks
• 5:03
Speaker 6: make sure you shop there too, and don't just ask
• 5:06
Speaker 6: them because they always give. All of our local small
• 5:09
Speaker 6: businesses are so giving. They'll help others, but we all
• 5:12
Speaker 6: need to make sure we shop there so they can
• 5:14
Speaker 6: keep helping. It's a it's circular. They they keep giving back,
• 5:19
Speaker 6: and we all need to go there and shop and
• 5:21
Speaker 6: keep all the local people employed. I mean, you know
• 5:24
Speaker 6: there's there's lots of local people. They are employed by
• 5:27
Speaker 6: our small businesses and restaurants, and it's so important to
• 5:30
  Speaker 6: keep this going.
• 5:31
Speaker 3: It is and again I will say that nothing and nothing.
• 5:35
Speaker 3: I want to say anger.
• 5:36
  Speaker 5: Let me.
• 5:37
Speaker 3: I think disappointment is the is the correct word. Is when,
• 5:40
Speaker 3: as you said, the little league teams, the civic organizations,
• 5:44
Speaker 3: whatever the case may be, goes into a small business
• 5:47
Speaker 3: asking for a donation, but then they don't do their part.
• 5:51
Speaker 3: And many of them do, don't get me wrong, but
• 5:52
Speaker 3: many they don't do their part. It's like, you know,
• 5:55
Speaker 3: I mean, you just want to say, well, when was
• 5:57
Speaker 3: the last time you bought something in our store? You
• 5:59
Speaker 3: know you're asking for something from us. When when was
• 6:02
Speaker 3: the last time that you maybe said no to Amazon
• 6:04
Speaker 3: and came into one of these small.
• 6:06
Speaker 6: Stores exactly, And it's so important because people don't realize
• 6:10
Speaker 6: the number of people that live here in Hurricane and
• 6:13
Speaker 6: Putnam County that work at a small business or they
• 6:16
Speaker 6: own a small business. And you know, throughout America there's
• 6:20
Speaker 6: it's like ninety eight or ninety nine percent of businesses
• 6:23
Speaker 6: in the US are small businesses, and they have like
• 6:26
Speaker 6: sixty million employees. And I mean it's it's like thirty
• 6:30
Speaker 6: million small businesses throughout America. It's crazy, and they're all everywhere,
• 6:34
Speaker 6: and a lot of them are home based, are small,
• 6:37
Speaker 6: have three, four, five six employees. We need to support
• 6:41
Speaker 6: those those businesses every single day. But really we need
• 6:44
Speaker 6: to make an impact this Saturday, and I you know,
• 6:46
Speaker 6: I'll be I'll be down on Main Street, you know
• 6:48
Speaker 6: at Oodles and other places that Oodles.
• 6:52
Speaker 5: Is one of my favorites I go to and I'll
• 6:55
Speaker 5: be there this Saturday shopping and it's it's it's wonderful
• 6:59
  Speaker 5: to me.
• 7:00
Speaker 3: You're Scott Edwards of Hurricane about small business Saturday. Give
• 7:03
Speaker 3: me you mentioned Noodles. It's a great store in Hurricane.
• 7:06
Speaker 3: Give us a few more of those small businesses that
• 7:08
Speaker 3: maybe people that aren't familiar with the area may not
• 7:11
  Speaker 3: know about.
• 7:14
Speaker 6: Bearwood Company and uh and that's on Main Street. And
• 7:18
Speaker 6: and Heritage Company. They're they're fairly new over on Midland Trail,
• 7:21
Speaker 6: just you know, within walking distant the main Street.
• 7:24
Speaker 5: And I'll tell you what.
• 7:25
Speaker 6: And they both make handmade it's all wood products, a
• 7:28
Speaker 6: lot of it's local wood right here from West Virginia.
• 7:31
Speaker 6: They both make awesome products. A shop at those shops.
• 7:35
  Speaker 5: They're phenomenal.
• 7:36
Speaker 6: They can personalize things, they can build big things, small things.
• 7:39
  Speaker 5: It's wonderful.
• 7:40
Speaker 6: Sunny Sky's Boutique is a fairly new boutique in downtown Hurricane.
• 7:45
Speaker 6: And then we've had the Hurricane Floor on Gift Shop
• 7:48
Speaker 6: for many, many many years. So those are just those
• 7:50
Speaker 6: are just a few that are that are in Hurricane.
• 7:52
  Speaker 6: You know, Irish and Indy. It's a women's boutique that's
• 7:56
Speaker 6: in Hurricane. And of course if you're hungry, swing around
• 7:59
Speaker 6: the Farley's hig Dogs. Everybody loves Farley's Hot Dogs. Main Street,
• 8:03
Speaker 6: Main Street, Creamy and Creamery and Grill. They've got the
• 8:05
Speaker 6: best hamburgers, nice cream around. And Sergio's. We have people
• 8:09
Speaker 6: travel from all over for Sergio's wonderful, wonderful Italian food.
• 8:15
Speaker 6: And Dave, have you had sergery.
• 8:16
Speaker 3: As oh now what do you think? Of course I have,
• 8:18
  Speaker 3: of course, Uh.
• 8:19
Speaker 5: Here I've seen I've seen you there and I know
• 8:21
Speaker 5: you love you love Italian.
• 8:23
Speaker 3: Here here's a little hack for you. One of the
• 8:24
Speaker 3: I mean, I've never had anything bad at sergei Is,
• 8:26
Speaker 3: but one thing, uh that's probably my favorite is the
• 8:29
Speaker 3: steak Tourdelini. Get the steak Tordellini.
• 8:31
Speaker 6: When you go there, get the steak and then and
• 8:34
Speaker 6: then and if you don't want Sergio's, go down to
• 8:36
Speaker 6: Bow and that dough company, best wood fire pizza you've
• 8:39
Speaker 6: ever had in your life. It's it's right right on
• 8:41
Speaker 6: Main Street. So yes, I urge everybody to shop local,
• 8:45
Speaker 6: eat local, you know, eat and then there's so many others,
• 8:49
Speaker 6: not just on Main Street and Midland Trail, there's so
• 8:51
Speaker 6: many others in Hurricane and Putnam County or wherever you're at.
• 8:54
Speaker 6: Go to your local, your local restaurant, your local shop,
• 8:59
Speaker 6: and buy there and just it will make their day
• 9:02
Speaker 6: if you just if you haven't done it this year,
• 9:04
Speaker 6: go this Saturday and do something, buy one thing.
• 9:07
Speaker 5: It will make their day.
• 9:08
Speaker 3: Now we're talking about small business Saturday. But also understand
• 9:11
Speaker 3: that you've got an event coming up on I think
• 9:13
Speaker 3: the date was Thursday, December twelfth, you wanted to talk about.
• 9:18
  Speaker 5: We do.
• 9:18
Speaker 6: It's a shop and eat on Main Street. So our
• 9:21
Speaker 6: local businesses on Main Street got together and said, hey,
• 9:24
Speaker 6: let's let's all be open from four pm to eight
• 9:27
Speaker 6: pm and shop and eat at our local Hurrican Main
• 9:30
Speaker 6: Street businesses. And there's some giveaways and stuff. You can
• 9:33
Speaker 6: stop in social event space and you can enter to
• 9:37
Speaker 6: win a gift basket and you pick up a card
• 9:39
Speaker 6: and you go down and get it checked off from
• 9:41
Speaker 6: the local business. You don't have to buy anything to participate,
• 9:45
Speaker 6: but what we'd like for you to and we'll give
• 9:48
Speaker 6: away some stuff. But everybody's will be open four pm
• 9:50
Speaker 6: to eight pm. It's kind of a it's just another
• 9:55
Speaker 6: special night, you know, to shop local Thursday, December twelfth,
• 10:00
Speaker 6: and then I will tell you that's two days before
• 10:02
Speaker 6: and you're probably getting ready to ask me about this,
• 10:04
Speaker 6: but I hope, if not, I'm going to talk about anyway.
• 10:06
Speaker 6: Our Christmas Parade this year is going to be phenomenal.
• 10:11
Speaker 6: The theme is the Hurricane Polar Express. We've had people
• 10:15
Speaker 6: asking for a theme, the Polar Express theme for years now,
• 10:20
Speaker 6: so we're doing the Polar Express and it's presented by
• 10:23
Speaker 6: Better Homes and Gardens real Estate Central. We appreciate those folks.
• 10:27
Speaker 6: They sponsor our parade and make sure we can do
• 10:30
Speaker 6: all the stuff. But we expect it to be one
• 10:33
Speaker 6: of our largest parades we've ever had. So it's already
• 10:36
Speaker 6: lots and lots and lots of people registering.
• 10:38
Speaker 5: It's awesome. And we have it at noon.
• 10:40
Speaker 6: This is the second year our parade's been at noon,
• 10:42
Speaker 6: and the community absolutely loves the noon parade.
• 10:46
Speaker 3: So yeah, and there's a lot that well, and I
• 10:48
Speaker 3: know our radio stations are going to be there. I know,
• 10:51
Speaker 3: I'm pretty sure V one hundred is going to be there.
• 10:52
Speaker 3: I'm going to be there representing the Classic Gross station
• 10:55
Speaker 3: ninety eighth seven the Mountain. I think ninety six one
• 10:58
Speaker 3: KWS is going to be there. All three of us
• 11:00
Speaker 3: were in the parade last year. We're looking forward to
• 11:02
Speaker 3: being there again this year as well. And it's a
• 11:04
Speaker 3: big old parade, man, it really is.
• 11:06
Speaker 5: Yes, yes, it is.
• 11:08
Speaker 6: And then by the way, December twenty first, from four
• 11:11
Speaker 6: to seven pm on Main Street, we're having free horse
• 11:15
Speaker 6: and carriage rides and that's presented by Premium Home Warranty.
• 11:18
Speaker 6: That's Saturday December twenty first, four to seven pm, and
• 11:23
Speaker 6: of course it's where it always is. Drop off and
• 11:26
Speaker 6: pick up is a Putton County Bank parking lot on
• 11:28
Speaker 6: Main Street. We'll have free hot chocolate and you know
• 11:31
Speaker 6: other things out there will just be a neat, a
• 11:33
Speaker 6: neat evening, hurreaking. Downtown's always lit up, businesses open. It's
• 11:38
Speaker 6: just a great times of meat and see people a
• 11:40
Speaker 6: few days before Christmas. That's December twenty first, from four
• 11:43
Speaker 6: to seven pm. It's going to be it's going to
• 11:45
Speaker 6: be awesome. And I will tell you know, Thanksgiving tomorrow,
• 11:49
Speaker 6: Christmas season coming, and we all need to remember the reason,
• 11:53
Speaker 6: you know, reason for Christmas is, you know, are the
• 11:56
Speaker 6: birth of birth of Jesus Christ. So we need to
• 11:59
Speaker 6: remember that as we celebrate this wonderful Christmas season. Wherever
• 12:02
Speaker 6: you're at, but uh right here in Hurricane, it's going
• 12:05
Speaker 6: to be awesome, all.
• 12:05
Speaker 3: Right, Mary, It's always a pleasure to talk to you.
• 12:08
Speaker 3: I will see you on Saturday. I'm going to be
• 12:10
Speaker 3: down there on Saturday, as I traditionally, am so looking
• 12:13
Speaker 3: forward to seeing you and your family. Have a great,
• 12:15
Speaker 3: great Thanksgiving, and don't eat too many deviled eggs, okay.
• 12:20
Speaker 5: I thought you were coming to my house tomorrow too.
• 12:23
Speaker 3: You that possibly, but well I got to you know,
• 12:25
Speaker 3: I got to get home in time for the Cowboys game.
• 12:27
Speaker 5: You know that we hope they lose right now.
• 12:31
Speaker 3: No, no, we're playing the Giants. I mean, honestly, I
• 12:34
Speaker 3: think you and I could probably beat the Giants right now,
• 12:35
Speaker 3: but who knows? Who knows?
• 12:38
Speaker 5: A good God day.
• 12:39
Speaker 3: I appreciates all right, Mayor Scott Edwards, appreciate you being here.

Speaker 3: nine three five five zero zero eight. Tex says, Hey, Dave,
• 13:13
Speaker 3: how how come nobody has said anything about the Commode
• 13:15
Speaker 3: Bowl this year. It's going on as far as I
• 13:19
Speaker 3: know in Dunbar. As matter of fact, I was just
• 13:21
Speaker 3: talking to Steve Animal on my way down here this
• 13:24
Speaker 3: morning out in the hall, Steve from our sister station
• 13:26
Speaker 3: in the Mountain, and I think our man Shockly is
• 13:28
Speaker 3: actually going to be out there. He's a Dunbar guy,
• 13:31
Speaker 3: so I think he's going to be out there tomorrow. So,
• 13:33
Speaker 3: as far as I know, unless I hear otherwise, the
• 13:35
Speaker 3: Commode Bowl, the annual Commode Bowl will be going on
• 13:39
Speaker 3: as it always has in Dunbar. And again we'll have
• 13:41
Speaker 3: some more information available on that when we get it.
• 13:44
Speaker 3: But yeah, it's it's uh, it's still happening, all right.
• 13:47
Speaker 3: We're going to take a break. When we come back.
• 13:49
Speaker 3: We're going to talk to Jason Quatrell from Union Mission.
• 13:53
Speaker 3: They've got some big things going on this holiday season.
• 13:55

  Speaker 5: Man?
• 17:22
Speaker 3: How are you? I'm doing fine? So I got to
• 17:24
Speaker 3: ask you because if you've listened to the show, this
• 17:26
Speaker 3: has been a thing with me for the last couple
• 17:28
Speaker 3: of weeks. I've been asking every guest on the show
• 17:30
Speaker 3: your favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal?
• 17:34
Speaker 8: The favorite part of my Thanksgiving meal would have to
• 17:37
  Speaker 8: be the stuffing.
• 17:38
Speaker 3: This okay, all right, because here's where we are. I
• 17:40
Speaker 3: really haven't kept a running total yet, okay, but I'm
• 17:44
Speaker 3: gonna say, and totally as Hoppy Kirchfelle would say, I
• 17:47
Speaker 3: would say that the stuffing slash dressing is in the
• 17:50
Speaker 3: lead as well it should be. I could eat it
• 17:53
  Speaker 3: without the turkey.
• 17:53
  Speaker 5: I do.
• 17:54
Speaker 8: I usually eat it before it even makes it to
• 17:56
  Speaker 8: the oven.
• 17:57
Speaker 3: Really, yeah, I'm a fan. I'm a fan one hundred percent.
• 18:01
Speaker 3: All right, So I know you just wrapped up a
• 18:03
Speaker 3: program for teens. So let's talk about that before we
• 18:08
Speaker 3: get into the other reason you're here. We'll go ahead.
• 18:11
Speaker 8: Last twenty years or so we've been doing adoptive Family.
• 18:14
Speaker 8: I decided let's let's go with teens this year. Because
• 18:17
Speaker 8: they seem to get bottom of the barrel sometimes. So
• 18:21
Speaker 8: thirteen to sixteen year olds, we uh are doing adopted
• 18:25
Speaker 8: Family for this year, and we had four hundred kids
• 18:28
Speaker 8: sign up for this that were in need of this,
• 18:30
Speaker 8: and we were hurting. Thank you so much for being
• 18:32
Speaker 8: willing to bring me on for that. But man, the
• 18:37
Speaker 8: next couple of days after I called you last week,
• 18:40
Speaker 8: we had some great supporters.
• 18:42
Speaker 3: Man get on a.
• 18:43
Speaker 8: Phone call me and say, hey, we will take care
• 18:44
Speaker 8: of those teenagers for you.
• 18:46
Speaker 3: And you are right, and I talk I've gotten information
• 18:49
Speaker 3: about this, not only from you, but other organism similar
• 18:51
Speaker 3: type organizations as well. The teens kind of get forgotten about.
• 18:54
  Speaker 5: A little bit.
• 18:55
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I mean everybody, and it's you know, God
• 18:57
Speaker 3: bless me. Everybody wants to help out the little kids,
• 18:59
Speaker 3: and that's that's all great, but you know, once you
• 19:01
Speaker 3: get to a certain age and the toys aren't the
• 19:03
Speaker 3: thing anymore, people forget about the teens.
• 19:05
Speaker 8: Well, you got you know, you got the little kids
• 19:07
Speaker 8: with Santa Claus and all that, and it's all neat
• 19:09
Speaker 8: and cute and sweet. But then yeah, teenagers, they get
• 19:12
Speaker 8: they get left left out a little bit, like you said,
• 19:15
Speaker 8: and it's pretty cool to see these kids get Christmas.
• 19:19
  Speaker 8: I'll tell you.
• 19:21
Speaker 3: So if people I know you said that everybody met
• 19:24
Speaker 3: the need on this, but there's always a continuing need.
• 19:27
Speaker 8: This was just for this particular Yeah, never goes away
• 19:30
Speaker 8: with us, you know, three hundred sixt five days, twenty
• 19:33
Speaker 8: four to seven, never never goes away. But yeah, this
• 19:35
Speaker 8: particular need with adopted family was met. Four hundred teenagers.
• 19:39
Speaker 3: That's awesome. It's awesome. Again we're talking with Jason Contrel
• 19:42
Speaker 3: of Union Mission. All right, so tomorrow, I guess, is
• 19:46
Speaker 3: the thirteenth annual Drumstick Dash. Talk about that.
• 19:49
Speaker 8: Yeah, thirteen years of doing this race. It just blows
• 19:54
Speaker 8: my mind that people want to get up and run
• 19:55
Speaker 8: on Thanksgiving morning. Maybe to make extra room for that
• 20:00
Speaker 8: stuff that we were talking about, but it's a it's
• 20:04
Speaker 8: a big event for us. Man when we have anywhere
• 20:06
Speaker 8: from right now we have nine hundred runners signed up,
• 20:09
  Speaker 8: it's a little low for us. I think it's the
• 20:11
Speaker 8: rain that's that they're forecasting. Maybe, but usually anywhere from
• 20:14
Speaker 8: eleven twelve hundred racers. Thanksgiving morning, people bring their dogs,
• 20:18
Speaker 8: people dress up. Dave, you wouldn't believe the amount of
• 20:20
Speaker 8: people that come dressed in Turkey outfits. I mean it's crazy.
• 20:23
  Speaker 8: It's it's a really fun event. It's a lot of fun.
• 20:26
Speaker 8: Starts at nine o'clock tomorrow morning. The race actually starts
• 20:28
Speaker 8: at nine o'clock tomorrow morning, starts at Hadad and then
• 20:32
Speaker 8: goes down to the Capitol and back three point one
• 20:34
Speaker 8: miles five k. It's it's one of our best events.
• 20:38
Speaker 8: And people come from all over it's all over I
• 20:40
Speaker 8: mean all over these coasts. We have people i mean
• 20:42
Speaker 8: all over the country really to visit family and they
• 20:44
Speaker 8: end up running in the race. It's it's pretty neat.
• 20:48
Speaker 3: So this this is the thirteenth Yearbatist has gone on.
• 20:51
Speaker 3: I mean it started, I'm just presuming, really small and
• 20:53
Speaker 3: just kind of worked its weblood it.
• 20:54
Speaker 8: Is now started out across the river over at u See,
• 20:58
Speaker 8: and then it got so big that you see, couldn't
• 21:00
Speaker 8: handle the amount of parking, and so we moved over
• 21:02
Speaker 8: here probably ten years ago or so, and it's been
• 21:07
Speaker 8: an had Ad ever since and growing ever since.
• 21:10
Speaker 3: And again we're talking with Jason Quatrell from a Union
• 21:13
Speaker 3: mission and let's talk. You talked about the route, but uh,
• 21:17
Speaker 3: I mean you got to be and I know runners
• 21:19
Speaker 3: they're all crazy. Yeah, and I mean that in the
• 21:21
Speaker 3: best possible way. My wife's one of them. Oh okay,
• 21:24
  Speaker 3: she's crazy. Okay.
• 21:25
  Speaker 5: Uh.
• 21:25
Speaker 3: I guess good friends that that do it. I mean,
• 21:28
Speaker 3: folks will run in any you mentioned the rain or whatever.
• 21:31
Speaker 3: But they're kind of like golfers, you know that you
• 21:34
Speaker 3: just give them an excuse and they're going to be
• 21:35
Speaker 3: out there running. And so don't let the rain keep
• 21:38
Speaker 3: you away. And we have a lot of people at
• 21:40
Speaker 3: these events, Jason, that don't necessarily run. They just kind
• 21:44
Speaker 3: of show up to to Cheermont. Yeah.
• 21:46
Speaker 8: Yeah, there's a whole lot of people in the sidelines
• 21:47
Speaker 8: cheering and and and clapping and listening to the music
• 21:50
Speaker 8: we have. We have live music there. It's it's really
• 21:53
Speaker 8: really cool. But but yeah, a lot of people just
• 21:55
Speaker 8: come and walk. Families just come and walk, and yeah,
• 21:58
Speaker 8: and it's just a good family event.
• 22:01
Speaker 3: Talk with Jason Contrel again from Union mission of Dave Alan.
• 22:04

Speaker 8: And yeah, don't don't stay away because you haven't registered.
• 23:06
Speaker 8: It's not too late.
• 23:07
Speaker 3: It's never too late, and events like this are not
• 23:09
Speaker 3: possible without sponsors. Absolutely, you want to give a shout
• 23:12
Speaker 3: out to some of your sponsors.
• 23:13
Speaker 8: Lisa Larry pack Union Mission Behavior Health Center has done
• 23:18
  Speaker 8: a good job given to this event. I can't can't
• 23:27
Speaker 8: think I think that's about it.
• 23:28
Speaker 3: Okay, but but but again we big shout out to
• 23:31
Speaker 3: those people because you don't pull off events like this
• 23:32
Speaker 3: without the sponsorships. I mean not just this event, but
• 23:35
  Speaker 3: year round.
• 23:35
Speaker 8: Yeah, year round. We have some great sponsors that that
• 23:39
Speaker 8: that work with us year round, but this particular event
• 23:42
Speaker 8: really you know, the the racers and the registration, they
• 23:46
Speaker 8: take care of the costs for us pretty well.
• 23:48
Speaker 3: Let's talk about the overall mission of Union Mission.
• 23:52
Speaker 8: Yeah, so the overall mission has been has been helping
• 23:55
Speaker 8: the hurting people of West Virginia for one hundred and
• 23:57
Speaker 8: thirteen years. Man, we do that in many different ways.
• 24:02
Speaker 8: Our warehouse, you know, running the numbers the last couple
• 24:05
Speaker 8: of months. October usually they've twenty twenty five pounds of
• 24:09
Speaker 8: food goes out of our warehouse a month. Right, the
• 24:12
Speaker 8: month of October, fifty four thousand pounds of food went
• 24:15
Speaker 8: out of our warehouse.
• 24:16
  Speaker 3: I mean that's a lot.
• 24:17
Speaker 8: I was I almost fell out of my chair in
• 24:19
  Speaker 8: our business meeting.
• 24:20
Speaker 3: What do you contribute that to?
• 24:22
Speaker 8: Well, that month some of that went down to North
• 24:25
Speaker 8: Carolina for to help folks that were in the flood. Yeah, so,
• 24:31
Speaker 8: but a lot of that is we're just seeing even
• 24:35
Speaker 8: we're seeing working families having a hard time making ends meet.
• 24:38
Speaker 8: Now we've started doing some fresh products as far as
• 24:41
Speaker 8: eggs and such. We raise chickens, they lay eggs, We
• 24:47
Speaker 8: sell them out of our store for cheap, just to
• 24:49
Speaker 8: make sure people try. Now, what do you raise the
• 24:50
Speaker 8: chickens our property there, We've got we've got campus there
• 24:53
Speaker 8: that we've got pretty good sized coop, and we collect
• 24:56
Speaker 8: the eggs and wash the eggs and we're licensed to
• 24:59
Speaker 8: do all that through the through the state. But just
• 25:02
Speaker 8: trying to make sure people get protein on the table
• 25:05
Speaker 8: they need it and sell it at a extremely reduced
• 25:09
Speaker 8: price because things are getting so expensive, you know that,
• 25:12
Speaker 8: and everybody knows that, they see it, and just trying
• 25:15
Speaker 8: to help people in any way we possibly can, from
• 25:17
Speaker 8: preschool to drug addiction to homelessness to kids. We try
• 25:24
Speaker 8: to buy on every front in the state of West Virginia.
• 25:27
Speaker 3: And again, when you think about the people that are
• 25:30
Speaker 3: served by organizations like yours, Jason, it's not always what
• 25:35
Speaker 3: you think. It's not all I mean, you know, people
• 25:39
Speaker 3: have their stereotypes, they have this is what I think.
• 25:42
Speaker 3: This is who I think uses these services. But a
• 25:45
Speaker 3: great number of your people are working people. These aren't
• 25:48
Speaker 3: people just looking for a handout. These are people that
• 25:51
  Speaker 3: are are working.
• 25:52
Speaker 8: Yeah, talking about that, Yeah, there's no question I mean.
• 25:55
Speaker 8: And I'll be honest with you before you know, ten
• 25:57
Speaker 8: years ago, before I took this job, I always had
• 25:59
Speaker 8: this stereotype of people trying to work a system or
• 26:02
Speaker 8: treat people trying to get by with something or you know,
• 26:04
Speaker 8: get food for free or whatever. But there are genuinely
• 26:06
Speaker 8: West Virginia people out there that are working forty our week,
• 26:09
Speaker 8: working part time jobs the best they can. Uh, mom
• 26:12
Speaker 8: and dad working and still not being able to make
• 26:15
Speaker 8: ends meat. And they'll come to us and sit down
• 26:17
Speaker 8: with our family Service coordinators and we will We'll send them,
• 26:22
Speaker 8: send them away with a car load of food. We'll
• 26:24
Speaker 8: send them away with We help people that have house fires.
• 26:28
Speaker 8: We'll try to put them up in hotels. We'll try
• 26:30
Speaker 8: to get them gift cards to restaurants to see them
• 26:33
Speaker 8: eat so they can eat while they're trying to get
• 26:36
Speaker 8: things together with their house. Many different levels, many different ways. Man,
• 26:39
Speaker 8: we try to we try to help these people, and
• 26:42
Speaker 8: they're not all like you said, what you think. I mean,
• 26:45
Speaker 8: they are really hard working people that are trying to
• 26:50
Speaker 8: trying to get things together for kids and trying to
• 26:52
Speaker 8: get things together for for their family, to feed them,
• 26:55
Speaker 8: to to medical expenses, and and man, it's just tough nowadays,
• 27:00
Speaker 8: and we try to we try to bridge that gap.
• 27:02
Speaker 3: Talk about that process, Jayson, What does that process look like?
• 27:05
Speaker 3: I come in, you know, I'm a working person and
• 27:07
Speaker 3: maybe wife, two kids, you know, whatever, I come in.
• 27:10
Speaker 3: What does the process look like?
• 27:12
  Speaker 5: Yeah?
• 27:12
Speaker 8: Man, So so that's usually the ones that are that
• 27:15
Speaker 8: are the most shy, like they're working and they don't
• 27:18
Speaker 8: want to come in, like it takes a lot for
• 27:20
Speaker 8: them to pick up the phone call.
• 27:22
  Speaker 3: You can call.
• 27:22
  Speaker 8: I mean, if you're hurting right now, please don't don't.
• 27:25
Speaker 8: Don't feel bashful about that. Everybody goes through hard times.
• 27:28
Speaker 8: Pick up the phone call three zero four nine two
• 27:31
Speaker 8: five zero three six six, and we will get you
• 27:36
Speaker 8: in contact with someone, will set a schedule, We'll set
• 27:38
Speaker 8: an appointment for you to come in, set down with you,
• 27:41
Speaker 8: highlight the needs, and we will get you to our
• 27:46
Speaker 8: warehouse where our director Kathy McFarland and her team will
• 27:50
Speaker 8: get you set up for Thanksgiving. If you if you're hurting,
• 27:55
Speaker 8: call us. Uh anytime after Thanksgiving. If you're hurting, call us.
• 28:00
Speaker 8: We want to help. We want to make sure that
• 28:03
Speaker 8: you get food in your mouth. I mean, I can
• 28:05

• 30:43
Speaker 3: help with something like help in repairing the section of
• 30:45
Speaker 3: floor dry roted do to an undetected water leak?
• 30:49
Speaker 8: At one time you and your mission used to do
• 30:51
Speaker 8: things like that. I just don't have the staff anymore
• 30:53
Speaker 8: to be able to handle that. They used to have
• 30:55
Speaker 8: a crew that they would pay to go out and
• 30:58
Speaker 8: do that. And because of the economy and because of
• 31:01
Speaker 8: payroll and such, we I've had the I just don't
• 31:05
Speaker 8: have the staff to be.
• 31:05
Speaker 3: Able to do that in any longer. Maybe something for
• 31:07
Speaker 3: the future, maybe you could let it.
• 31:08
Speaker 8: It's not a bad idea that we can look at. Yeah,
• 31:10
Speaker 8: but yeah, not at this time.
• 31:12

Speaker 3: before Thanksgiving going to get into a debate about Christmas
• 37:15
Speaker 3: and so on and so forth. I'm just not going

Speaker 3: to do that. But you know, it's whatever you want
• 37:21
Speaker 3: it to be. How is that Christmas is in the heart?
• 37:24

• 37:42
Speaker 3: must see. Happy Thanksgiving, Dave, says a Texter and follow
• 37:46
Speaker 3: that up with another text that said Happy Thanksgiving, Dave,
• 37:48
Speaker 3: I do appreciate that. All right, some stuff from the newsroom.
• 37:53
Speaker 3: Many of us have wondered just what the senator ship.
• 38:01
Speaker 3: If it's not a word, it probably should be of
• 38:04
Speaker 3: Now Governor Jim Justice is going to look like, well,
• 38:07
Speaker 3: we may be getting a hint. Brad mclahanny has a
• 38:11
Speaker 3: story posted about it this morning wv Metro News dot com.
• 38:14
Speaker 3: The governor has stated that he doesn't know when he
• 38:19
Speaker 3: will officially start his new role as a US Senator,
• 38:23
Speaker 3: replacing Joe Manchin, who opted, of course, not to run
• 38:27
Speaker 3: for reelection. He has said, though the governor has said
• 38:32
Speaker 3: that he will he will continue to coach high school
• 38:37
Speaker 3: basketball for Greenbrier East. Now, these comments all coming yesterday,
• 38:44
Speaker 3: and his Brad's story points out this is where it
• 38:48
Speaker 3: kind of gets a little interesting. Our next governor, the
• 38:52
Speaker 3: current Attorney General, Patrick Morrissey, is due to be sworn
• 38:57
Speaker 3: in on January thirteenth. Now, the governor yesterday, in replying
• 39:02
Speaker 3: to a question from longtime friend of the show, Stephen
• 39:06
Speaker 3: Allen Adams of Auguen Newspaper said, quote, we haven't decided
• 39:10
Speaker 3: absolutely yet. It seems to me this is Governor talking
• 39:15
Speaker 3: like we're going to have all kinds of confusion if
• 39:17
Speaker 3: I do it, talking about the governor being sweared in
• 39:20
Speaker 3: a senator prior to the thirteenth. Now, try to follow
• 39:25
Speaker 3: along here. There's going to be a ten day gap
• 39:29
Speaker 3: between when US senators normally take office and when the
• 39:34
Speaker 3: new governor of the state of West Virginia is inaugurated.
• 39:38
Speaker 3: The state Senate president in this case is still Craig Blair,
• 39:46
Speaker 3: who would typically fill in that ten day gap. Now,
• 39:49
Speaker 3: keep in mind, though Craig Blair was defeated in his
• 39:53
Speaker 3: primary back in May, he's still the Senate president though,
• 39:56
Speaker 3: and lieutenant governor, and they're going to decide upon a
• 40:02
Speaker 3: new Senate president. It's a three way battle between Senators
• 40:09
Speaker 3: Eric Tarr, Tom Tacuba, and Randy Smith. Now, a new
• 40:13
Speaker 3: Senate president is supposed to be chosen in the next
• 40:19
Speaker 3: couple of weeks during interims, which we held in Charleston. Now,
• 40:23
Speaker 3: Governor Justice, going back to him, is saying, quote, the
• 40:27
Speaker 3: cleanest way for me to stay in office would be
• 40:31
Speaker 3: till January thirteenth, then pass that torch directly to Patrick
• 40:35
Speaker 3: meaning Attorney General and now governor like Patrick Morrissey. So
• 40:39
Speaker 3: it's kind of it's kind of confusing here. But what
• 40:46
Speaker 3: about the subject of the governor continuing to say he
• 40:51
Speaker 3: is going to coach high school basketball as a US senator. Now,
• 40:57
Speaker 3: it was problematic to a lot of folks that the
• 41:01
Speaker 3: governor of the state of West Virginia was continuing to
• 41:06
Speaker 3: coach high school basketball. Now he's a US senator or
• 41:12
Speaker 3: will be a US Senator based supposedly in Washington, and
• 41:20
Speaker 3: he's going to continue to coach girls basketball. I'm not
• 41:28
Speaker 3: I'm not here to say he can or can't do it.
• 41:30
Speaker 3: That's not my role. I've got my opinions on it.
• 41:32
Speaker 3: But he's going to continue to coach girls basketball. And
• 41:38
Speaker 3: don't know what kind of committee assignments, if any, he's
• 41:40
Speaker 3: going to have in Washington. You know, being a US
• 41:44
Speaker 3: senator must like being a legislator. I was talking yesterday
• 41:47
Speaker 3: to a friend of mine who is an incoming legislator
• 41:50
Speaker 3: and he's taken office for the first time, and uh, yes, said,
• 41:54
Speaker 3: you know, we'll be ready because when you hear us
• 41:57
Speaker 3: talking on the news when the when the llegiature comes
• 42:00
Speaker 3: into session, that you gavel in at eleven in the
• 42:03
Speaker 3: morning and then you gavel out at two or two thirty. No, no, no, no,
• 42:05
Speaker 3: it doesn't work that way. You have even as a legislator,
• 42:08
Speaker 3: you have committee meetings that start at six, six thirty
• 42:11
Speaker 3: in the morning, and as the session starts to wind down,
• 42:15
Speaker 3: you don't get out of there until you know, ten
• 42:17
Speaker 3: thirty eleven o'clock at night, and then are back at
• 42:19
Speaker 3: five thirty or six the next morning. It's just part
• 42:21
Speaker 3: of being a legislator. So that's in the legislature, but
• 42:24
Speaker 3: you're still in the state of West Virginia. Now, a
• 42:27
Speaker 3: lot of the legislators will return to their homes that
• 42:30
Speaker 3: they live somewhere relatively close. Many get an apartment or
• 42:32
Speaker 3: stay in a hotel or something here so they can
• 42:34
Speaker 3: be back bright and early and fresh the next morning.
• 42:38
Speaker 3: But that's within the state. We're talking about a US
• 42:41
Speaker 3: senator that is going to be spending apparently a great
• 42:46
Speaker 3: deal of his time in his home state. Now that's
• 42:48
Speaker 3: not to say that Joe Mansion and Sheldy Moore Capito
• 42:53
Speaker 3: don't spend a lot of time in their home state,
• 42:54
Speaker 3: because obviously they do, but they spend a whole lot
• 42:57
Speaker 3: of time in Washington as well. And I don't think
• 42:59
Speaker 3: that we are going to see that as much from
• 43:03
Speaker 3: Governor Justice. And I think he pretty much laid that
• 43:06
Speaker 3: out there yesterday. But you also have to remember that
• 43:10
Speaker 3: the people of West Virginia voted overwhelmingly to send Jim
• 43:17
Speaker 3: Justice to Washington. I mean, the race with all due
• 43:19
Speaker 3: respect to mayor of Glenn Elliott, a former mayor of Wheeling,
• 43:23
Speaker 3: Glenn Elliott, great guy. I had him on the show
• 43:26
Speaker 3: several times. The race wasn't even close. And the people
• 43:31
Speaker 3: of West Virginia knew this about the governor and they
• 43:34
Speaker 3: elected him anyway. And so he kind of put it
• 43:37
Speaker 3: all to rest yesterday by saying, yeah, I'm going to
• 43:39
Speaker 3: continue to coach. I'm going to continue to be a
• 43:42
Speaker 3: high schoo girls high school basketball coach. So there you
• 43:46
Speaker 3: have it. In the meantime, we now have a twenty
• 43:49
Speaker 3: twenty four Christmas ornament from the Governor's office. Morgan Pemberton
• 43:52
Speaker 3: as a story posted about it. If you want to
• 43:54
Speaker 3: see it for yourself, it's over at the website wv
• 43:57
Speaker 3: metronews dot com. And of course, of course, the new
• 44:00
Speaker 3: Christmas ornament does have Baby Dog on it. It was
• 44:04
Speaker 3: all announced yesterday at a ceremony at the Culture Center.
• 44:07
Speaker 3: And if you see this thing, and again Morgan's got
• 44:10
Speaker 3: a great story and a picture posted about a WV
• 44:12
Speaker 3: Metronews dot com, it looks like baby Dog is a
• 44:16
Speaker 3: giant on top of the Capitol building. Now, had I
• 44:20
Speaker 3: designed it, I would have had Baby Dog hanging off
• 44:23
Speaker 3: the Capitol kind of like King Kong, you know from
• 44:26
Speaker 3: the movie Photos. But that's just me. That's why they
• 44:28
Speaker 3: don't let me do things like that. And I'll say
• 44:30
Speaker 3: this before we go to break And I got several
• 44:32
Speaker 3: texts to get to one thing about the governor's tenure
• 44:37
Speaker 3: in office. It certainly gave us a lot to talk about,
• 44:43
Speaker 3: from the governor who was elected as a Democrat changing
• 44:47
Speaker 3: his party to Republican, to the giant heaping platters of manure,
• 44:52
Speaker 3: to the COVID sweepstakes with the governor going on Oprah
• 44:55
  Speaker 3: saying you'll get a truck and you'll get a gun,

  Speaker 3: and you'll get a truck and you'll get a boat,

• 45:10

• 45:14
Speaker 3: It has certainly been an interesting eight years for sure,
• 45:17
Speaker 3: and Governor elect Patrick Morris, He's going to have a

Speaker 3: All right, so if you're a state worker, you're gonna
• 49:37
Speaker 3: get half the day off plus all of tomorrow and
• 49:40
Speaker 3: Friday as well. The governor making that announcement yesterday, I wonder,
• 49:43
Speaker 3: I just was thinking about this this morning. I wonder
• 49:45
Speaker 3: how long it's going to be till we take the
• 49:47
Speaker 3: entire week off for Thanksgiving. And I'm not hating on it.
• 49:51
Speaker 3: I'm just saying I am old enough to remember though,
• 49:53
Speaker 3: when kids were in school through Wednesday during the Thanksgiving week.
• 49:58
Speaker 3: And again I'm not hating on any I'm just saying,
• 50:00
Speaker 3: I just wonder if we get to that point where
• 50:02
Speaker 3: Thanksgiving will be an entire week. So I'd say you'll
• 50:06
Speaker 3: probably have that within the next couple of years, all right,
• 50:09
Speaker 3: So let me close with this. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and
• 50:14
Speaker 3: I certainly hope everyone has a very very happy Thanksgiving.
• 50:19
Speaker 3: Again for me, no show tomorrow or Friday. I will
• 50:21
Speaker 3: be back on Monday, and with all the guests I've
• 50:25
Speaker 3: had on the show over the last week and a half,
• 50:26
Speaker 3: or so. I've asked nearly everyone that when I remember
• 50:29
Speaker 3: to anyway, what their favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal
• 50:32
Speaker 3: was a lot of different answers, but I would have
• 50:33
Speaker 3: to say it is the dressing or the stuffing. That's
• 50:36
Speaker 3: what most people had said. So win when for me
• 50:39
Speaker 3: and win for them as well. But whatever you enjoy
• 50:44
Speaker 3: tomorrow as you stuff yourself, if you choose to do that,
• 50:48
Speaker 3: just keep a few things in mind. And the following
• 50:51
Speaker 3: is a is a daviatorial. Despite all of our issues,
• 50:58
Speaker 3: I still believe that we live in the greatest country
• 51:04
Speaker 3: on God's green Earth, and the fact that I can
• 51:07
Speaker 3: get on this radio every morning and talk to you
• 51:11
Speaker 3: is a blessing for me personally. And I appreciate all
• 51:15
Speaker 3: of you, even the ones that don't agree with me,
• 51:18
Speaker 3: and I don't sometimes agree with them. It is America,
• 51:22
Speaker 3: and that's what makes it so dang great here. And
• 51:27
Speaker 3: also keep in mind that when you sit down with
• 51:30
Speaker 3: your families tomorrow, not everyone has that luxury. Okay, there
• 51:35
Speaker 3: are men and women are troops around the world that
• 51:38
Speaker 3: are working every day to make it possible for us
• 51:41
Speaker 3: to enjoy the food, the family, the football, the shopping
• 51:43
Speaker 3: the next day, whatever you want to do. So thank
• 51:46
Speaker 3: you to our troops, many of whom would like nothing
• 51:50
Speaker 3: better than to be setting around Grandma's dining room table
• 51:54
Speaker 3: tomorrow but can't. And let's also give a thought out
• 51:57
Speaker 3: tomorrow to the people that are working. Not everyone. It's
• 52:00
Speaker 3: Thanksgiving or Christmas or whatever the holiday is off. Our
• 52:03
Speaker 3: first responders are medical professionals and yes, our media members.
• 52:08
Speaker 3: I've spent many, many Thanksgivings and Christmas is working on
• 52:12
Speaker 3: the position hour I won't be this year. Not saying
• 52:14
Speaker 3: I won't again, but I'm not this year. Those folks
• 52:17
Speaker 3: are going to be working tomorrow, so a thought for them,
• 52:19
Speaker 3: and also think that tomorrow when you sit down, you
• 52:23
Speaker 3: might be breaking bread with people who may not have
• 52:25
Speaker 3: voted the way you did. Don't bring it up. Enjoy

• 52:34
Speaker 3: use terms like trump tart or lib tart or any
