- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:10Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:17media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:21everyone. OK, I know I keep asking you
- 0:24guys to fill out forms. I'm sorry, but I do have a form,
- 0:29LinkedIn, the show notes. If you guys could fill it out,
- 0:31that would be so helpful. I talked about on my Instagram
- 0:33Stories how I'm going to use the two weeks that I'm taking off
- 0:36from the podcast while Annabelle's away.
- 0:38So I'm like basically taking the next two weeks off.
- 0:40So I'm finishing up this week and then I have a two week
- 0:42break. I'm going to use some of that
- 0:44time to write a mini series about the journey of building a
- 0:49brand while you're still in the middle and like what that is
- 0:52like from an emotional perspective.
- 0:54So it's going to be like personal Diaries, personal
- 0:57essays. It's not going to be like, oh,
- 0:59here's like our marketing strategy or here's how you know,
- 1:02we've grown. It's not like a here's how we've
- 1:04built this. It's going to be like a here's
- 1:07the emotional toll. Here's the mental health journey
- 1:09that I'm on. Like all of that.
- 1:10It's going to be really intense. And we need a bit of proof of
- 1:13concept from you guys to help lock in this potential sponsor
- 1:17to see if it makes sense from you know, their perspective and
- 1:20also for you guys. So there is a poll in the show
- 1:23notes if you guys could fill it out.
- 1:25It's basically asking about how many scrollers are interested in
- 1:28funding for either a hobby or a business or even a business
- 1:33idea. So if you qualify for any of
- 1:35those, please fill it out. It's literally 3 questions.
- 1:38You just have to say how old you are, what country you live in
- 1:41and what your like. Thing is, if it's like a hobby,
- 1:44a business, or an idea that you have, you don't have to describe
- 1:47those things to us. Just like it's a check box.
- 1:49Yep, I have a hobby that I'd interested in funding for or
- 1:52whatever. And reminder, we did set up a
- 1:54buy me a coffee. If you guys want to support
- 1:56progressive independent media, support us to keep going.
- 2:00Essentially here at Centennial World, every single dollar goes
- 2:02back into the business. And thank you so much to the
- 2:05people that have already donated and signed up for memberships
- 2:09and things like that. It's honestly so exciting and
- 2:11it's surreal. So thank you so much.
- 2:13OK, the first word that I have for you guys today, book talks.
- 2:17Luke Bateman has landed a book deal one month after joining the
- 2:22niche. So I was going to cover this
- 2:25yesterday, but I literally thought to myself, Lauren, don't
- 2:29be such a hater. Let's just like see how this
- 2:31plays out. Well, it's been exactly 24 hours
- 2:34since I decided to not cover it. And so far it looks like things
- 2:39are not panning out too well. So we spoke about Luke when he
- 2:43launched his book talk account last month.
- 2:46And I even said, like, I'm kind of wary because we are always
- 2:49disappointed when men enter these largely women dominated
- 2:54niches and they find so much success so fast.
- 2:57And this isn't, like, necessarily his fault.
- 3:00OK, I'll get into it. But this isn't necessarily his
- 3:02fault. I don't fault him for, you know,
- 3:04accepting this opportunity, but it's interesting.
- 3:08So if you don't know Luke Bateman, he was an Australian
- 3:10bachelor * and he joined Book Talk in late May and he
- 3:14immediately went super viral because the women of Book Talk
- 3:16were basically dying for him. In his first videos, he
- 3:20explained that he loves reading and he loves fantasy books, but
- 3:23he never really felt comfortable talking about it because he's
- 3:26from the country and he does blue collar work.
- 3:28He is very hot. You know, he came online, he was
- 3:31wearing an Acubra hat, he was in a truck, he works with his hands
- 3:36and he was like, I'm just a sensitive soul that loves to
- 3:39read. And the women were like, Oh my
- 3:40God, sign me the fuck up. So he got over 115,000 followers
- 3:47in the first few days and he is now at 170,000 followers, I
- 3:50believe. Yeah, 175,000 followers in the
- 3:53first month. So at the time of him really
- 3:55starting to blow up at the beginning, like there were some
- 3:58criticisms about how hard creators in that niche work to
- 4:03grow their accounts and to be taken seriously in this niche.
- 4:06It's a very competitive niche. You know, we've covered book
- 4:09talk several times here. Every time I cover book talk, I
- 4:12get a little bit nervous because it is a very like the niche is
- 4:15very protective of itself and it's a very, it seems
- 4:19competitive niche. And I think it's a difficult
- 4:21niche for creators to really crack into and to grow.
- 4:24So a lot of people were kind of like, OK, it's so classic that
- 4:27this hot guy comes in and he cracks like 100,000 followers in
- 4:31his first few days when women have been so logging away,
- 4:34making really meaningful content in this space for years and have
- 4:39not grown, you know, half as big, nowhere near as fast, all
- 4:43of that kind of stuff. Right?
- 4:44And all of that feels even more true now because Luke has just
- 4:48announced on Sunday that he signed A2 book deal for a
- 4:53fantasy series with a Tria, which is part of Simon and
- 4:57Schuster. So like a giant publisher, I
- 5:00can't stress enough. I'm not, you know, part of book
- 5:02talk, but I do have I'm obviously in media and I do have
- 5:06a lot of friends that have written books that are in talks
- 5:10with publishers that have been approached by publishers.
- 5:12So my very kind of high level understanding of this industry,
- 5:16publishing is so gate kept and it is insane that he was offered
- 5:21a two book deal, let alone a single book deal after being
- 5:26publicly in this niche or in this like industry, quote UN
- 5:29quote, for like one single month.
- 5:31I understand maybe his story at it's more than one book, but the
- 5:36fact that he got signed on A2 book deal his first time with
- 5:40this huge imprint, it's it's actually wild.
- 5:43So OK, my initial thought was like what the fuck?
- 5:47Like being a reader is very different than being an author.
- 5:52However, he has in some of the press, like they are referring
- 5:54to him as a writer and a poet. So maybe that is like part of
- 5:57his journey. Maybe he, you know, does some
- 5:59writing that I am not Privy to. So that is why I started to be
- 6:02like, you know what, maybe I'm being too much of A hater.
- 6:04Like I need to back off. Maybe I won't cover this.
- 6:07I was just waiting to see how it kind of all came together.
- 6:10I was considering reaching out to him because he's in Australia
- 6:12too and seeing if he would speak to me about this.
- 6:14But I thought it was worth covering now because a lot of
- 6:18his followers are excited for him.
- 6:19But now, of course, the backlash and the criticism has started
- 6:23and I fear it's going to snowball and this is going to
- 6:25become really, really big. A white man joined book talk on
- 6:28April 22nd and a month later achieved getting a two book epic
- 6:32fantasy deal with Atria Books that he credits to his success
- 6:36on book talk. And we don't really have very
- 6:38many details of what he's already written, but it seems
- 6:40like he didn't even have a manuscript.
- 6:43Like it seems like it he had a concept which is something that
- 6:46many established authors who have already been traditionally
- 6:50published even can't even manage.
- 6:52So I think that's very interesting.
- 6:53Luke Bateman, He is a former rugby player turned Bachelor
- 6:56contestant. He seems nice.
- 6:59I don't hate the guy, and it's really not anything personal.
- 7:02He also seems to be a genuine lover of books, which is pretty
- 7:05rare for these like cute white book talk boys who come on here
- 7:09and read smut and have like thousands of women lusting after
- 7:13that. He has a pretty extensive
- 7:14bookshelf high fantasy read that he seems to be very passionate
- 7:17about. Like genuinely.
- 7:19But the fact of the matter is he got his platform for being cute
- 7:22and likable, and that platform led to him getting a.
- 7:24Book deal and again, I don't think anyone is faulting him for
- 7:26taking the deal like take any opportunity that comes to you.
- 7:29It's just an industry thing, right?
- 7:32Like, this is actually why we need DEI.
- 7:34Like, this is like a literal case study for that.
- 7:37And I'm not saying he's going to be a bad writer or a bad author.
- 7:40He might have an amazing series that comes out and he becomes
- 7:44one of the best fantasy authors of our generation.
- 7:46But that aside, it's just the principle, right?
- 7:49It is such a challenging industry to break into.
- 7:52And it's not even like, you know, oh, OK.
- 7:54Well, of course. Like they're going to give it to
- 7:55people with lots of followers. Fair enough.
- 7:57But like, he has 175,000 followers.
- 8:00Yeah, he got them in one month. But like compared to some of the
- 8:03book talk girlies who have millions of followers and I am
- 8:07sure some of them would love to be authors, it just doesn't add
- 8:10up and it makes me sad. It makes me sad for the book
- 8:13talk creators that have been literally slogging away in this
- 8:17industry and it just feels so classic.
- 8:19It feels so classic. OK, but we need to get on to the
- 8:22next story because I mean, this is actually some more like white
- 8:27man hate. But I need to talk about how
- 8:31there is so much viral hate right now towards Benson Boone
- 8:35online. OK, so Benson Boone has been
- 8:37criticized slash kind of publicly hated for about a year
- 8:41now, but the discourse has really taken off over these past
- 8:44couple of weeks, largely because his new song met majestic.
- 8:48No mystical magic, majestic mystical magic, moonbeam ice
- 8:53cream or whatever he sings came out and I think that coupled
- 8:57with his Grammys performance, he was performing amongst, you
- 9:00know, some really big acts and it just doesn't feel like it's
- 9:05adding up for people. Now, again, just like book talk,
- 9:09I do get a little bit afraid to cover music sometimes because
- 9:13the stands, they are strong. I actually like don't even
- 9:16really know who Benson Boone is. Like obviously I know who he is,
- 9:19but like I have actually no strong feelings towards him.
- 9:22So this is just me relaying the hate.
- 9:25Okay, this is not my opinion. I do not personally hate him, I
- 9:28don't really care. I'm just relaying what is going
- 9:31on. So there are some main
- 9:32criticisms towards him right now.
- 9:34First he came out of nowhere and was suddenly everywhere and he's
- 9:38being absolutely shoved down our throats.
- 9:41I actually saw someone on TikTok, a man on TikTok say that
- 9:44it's almost like Nickelback in like the 90s and 2000s when
- 9:49Nickelback was literally everywhere, like all over the
- 9:51radio, you know, played in every single mall, every store you
- 9:55went into non-stop. You could not escape Nickelback.
- 9:58And that overexposure kind of turned US against them and as a
- 10:02result, they became cringe quote UN quote.
- 10:04However, the difference is that Nickelback kind of just stayed
- 10:07the course and like made music for their die hard fans.
- 10:11Whereas Benson Boone cannot seem to handle that people don't like
- 10:14him because he has addressed this on TikTok, which I will get
- 10:17to in a minute. One of the main comments on one
- 10:20of the videos that Benson Boone made about the criticism, one of
- 10:24the top comments says you make music for Target ads and retail
- 10:27stores. It gets shoved down our throats
- 10:29every two seconds and it's honestly really irritating.
- 10:32OK, so to this criticism, I will say Benson Boone like did kind
- 10:36of come out of nowhere, but that's because he came from
- 10:38American Idol. Everyone from American Idol
- 10:40comes out of nowhere. So he was on American Idol and
- 10:44then he actually didn't want to be associated with the show, so
- 10:46he quit. And then he basically took to
- 10:48TikTok and like built his online following his music career
- 10:52through an online following and obviously had that one huge hit,
- 10:56Beautiful Things, where he's screaming his beautiful things
- 10:59I've done. You guys know the one that was
- 11:01such a big song that now he is kind of everywhere.
- 11:04The next major criticism is that his shtick is really inauthentic
- 11:09and his branding is all over the place.
- 11:11His whole like Freddie Mercury cosplay, Harry Styles reheating,
- 11:16his nachos thing that did seem to come out of nowhere, like it
- 11:20was a shift that seemingly happened overnight.
- 11:23His early music career, his aesthetic, his style, his
- 11:26branding was like, I don't know, white country singer almost.
- 11:30Even in Beautiful Things, he has such a different vibe than what
- 11:33he has now. And with his new song, I keep
- 11:36wanting to say Moonbeam Ice Cream, but you guys know what I
- 11:38mean. Majestic Magic or whatever it
- 11:40is, he has this like Americana thing going on, which I do think
- 11:45is like an interesting choice right now, while also
- 11:49cosplaying, like I said, as like Freddie Mercury or Harry Styles.
- 11:52And the aesthetic that he has now feels forced or inauthentic
- 11:58because it's not how we knew him.
- 11:59And of course, like, artists can change, they can grow.
- 12:02Like think about all the different eras that different
- 12:04artists can have. But I think because it's all
- 12:06within the same era and it's all very conflicting.
- 12:09The cover art for Majestic Magic, Mystical Magic, Oh my
- 12:12God, I don't know what that song name is.
- 12:14I don't know why I keep saying Majestic Magic.
- 12:16The cover art from Majestic Magic is him holding.
- 12:20He's shirtless like dirty, holding up an American flag,
- 12:24like a gritty American flag behind him.
- 12:27I swear it is such a bizarre cover art for like the song that
- 12:31it is. And then he's performing it
- 12:33dressed as Freddie Mercury. There's just like conflicting
- 12:36things going on and it's all happening within the same era.
- 12:39So let me read you something that one creator wrote on
- 12:43TikTok. They said desperately trying to
- 12:44explain that the root of Benson Boone criticism is that he is
- 12:48inauthentic and willing to use any marketing to hit 15 minutes
- 12:51of fame. A great example is his use of
- 12:54the patriotic aesthetic to promote his new single versus
- 12:57Bruce Springsteen's use of the patriotic aesthetic to criticize
- 13:01America's encroaching fascism. What does a gritty American flag
- 13:05have to do with moonbeam ice cream?
- 13:08And then someone commented, Benson Boone is the answer to
- 13:11the age-old question, what if Freddie Mercury was born at
- 13:14Target? And then there are the
- 13:16criticisms that he is using queer performance culture to
- 13:21basically, you know, raise his profile and build his career
- 13:25again, because he did not start with that personal brand.
- 13:28That shtick it really like came into play over the last couple
- 13:32of months. So like I said, he has responded
- 13:34to some of this hate he wrote on Tiktok.
- 13:36This was from April so it was a little while ago.
- 13:38He wrote on Tiktok, if you hate me or my music, at least have a
- 13:41good reason for it. I just wrote a comment that said
- 13:43I don't even know why I hate Benson Boone but it feels right.
- 13:46Like what? How am I supposed to improve
- 13:48after reading that? At least say something valid
- 13:51like he low key just flips everywhere.
- 13:53Can he do anything else? Because he does like backflips
- 13:55all the time on stage or even I just don't like his songs even
- 13:59though I'm basing my opinion off of only one that I've heard over
- 14:02and over. Super valid.
- 14:04I think it is possible that he is just finding what his public
- 14:06brand is and because he has built his career online.
- 14:10Like we're watching it happen in real time but the fans are not
- 14:14being patient with it. I will say I kind of like that
- 14:17the most hated pop star in the world right now is a man.
- 14:20How rare is that? OK, the next story that I have
- 14:23for you guys, this one happened a couple weeks ago, but I just
- 14:26found it from Jen Loves Reviews and I was like, Oh my God.
- 14:30OK, so we need to talk about this.
- 14:31Alex Earl has partnered with Hawaiian Tropics, the brand to
- 14:35promote tanning. Kind of.
- 14:38So Alex Earl is the face of a new Hawaiian Tropics campaign
- 14:41called Tana Sutra, a play on Kama Sutra, and it centers
- 14:45around sunbathers who switch positions to get a more even
- 14:49tan. So the press release, according
- 14:51to Gen. Love's review says, quote, ask
- 14:53any sun lover, including Alex Earl, and they'll tell you the
- 14:56secret to an even glow is switching positions every 15 to
- 15:0020 minutes. That ritual inspired Tana Sutra
- 15:03are vibrant and flirty Glow getting guide that is hard to
- 15:07say that nods to the brand's iconic history while speaking
- 15:11directly to the bold radiant energy of now.
- 15:14Sure. So yeah, the ad is basically all
- 15:17of these gorgeous women who are like tanning like by a pool and
- 15:23switching positions. And they don't of course,
- 15:25outwardly promote tanning, but like it is it is promoting
- 15:29tanning. And this is really shocking to
- 15:31me because I live in Australia now.
- 15:33Like I'm from Canada originally. And I mean, sun safety has
- 15:37always been really important to my family, specifically because
- 15:40my mom is super, super fair and she's always just been so sun
- 15:43safe and she's had skin cancer so many times, even though she
- 15:47was born and raised and has lived her whole life in Canada.
- 15:50It's always been top of mind for me.
- 15:51But you know, growing up, like I'm a millennial, like growing
- 15:54up in the 2000s, sun safety was really not that big of a deal in
- 15:58Canada. Like all my friends would go to
- 16:00tanning beds, like getting the most tanned possible every
- 16:03single summer was like the goal. And unfortunately, I do see some
- 16:08of that trend coming back online among younger generations.
- 16:11But I do see a huge difference between how people talk about
- 16:14like sun safety and tanning in Canada versus Australia because
- 16:17the sun is so strong here. It's like so, so, so incredibly
- 16:20dangerous. People take sun safety so much
- 16:22more seriously here, as you know, as they should.
- 16:24So this is a shocking commercial to me.
- 16:28It's honestly OK. I know we keep talking about
- 16:30these similar things, but it's like watching a commercial that
- 16:33promotes cigarettes or something.
- 16:35It's really scary. And Alex Earl has such insane
- 16:38influence. Like whether you love her or you
- 16:40hate her, if you find her problematic or whatever, like
- 16:43she actually is probably the most influential creator in the
- 16:47space right now in terms of like her reach, like mass influence.
- 16:51She is so insanely influential right now and this is really
- 16:56disappointing both from the brand and from her.
- 16:59OK, the last word that I have for you guys is I have a quick
- 17:01little update on the Domino's Pizza Scotia Bank situation that
- 17:05we covered last week. OK, so last week I talked about
- 17:07how there was this Canadian crater named Naya.
- 17:09She ordered Domino's Pizza online on like March 30th, I
- 17:13think it was, and it was supposed to be $72 and like
- 17:17$0.53. And she ended up getting charged
- 17:20$7253. And Despite that being a very
- 17:25obvious mistake, Domino's Scotia Bank, which was her bank or
- 17:30credit card, neither of them really seemed to care.
- 17:33Like they were not rushing to resolve this.
- 17:35She had to pay the $7000 on her credit card because the bank was
- 17:39not reimbursing her and they weren't even like opening up her
- 17:42case. And so eventually everybody in
- 17:44her life was like, just take this to TikTok because you'll
- 17:46probably get a resolution. And unfortunately, well,
- 17:49fortunately for her, but like, unfortunately for like the
- 17:51reality that we live in, that is what happened.
- 17:54But Scotiabank has reached out to me and they have started
- 17:56finally looking into the dispute.
- 17:58They've also credited me the $7000 and so I'm satisfied with
- 18:03that. That's honestly all I wanted
- 18:04from the beginning was for them to look into it and credit me
- 18:06the money while the dispute is being looked into.
- 18:09So that's the temporary resolution for now.
- 18:12So yeah, it's pretty shitty that this had to literally go viral
- 18:16until she was taken seriously by two companies, 2 huge companies
- 18:20where she is a customer and they wouldn't even really, I mean,
- 18:24they were like quote UN quote like looking into it, but like
- 18:26nobody really cared. But the fact that there needed
- 18:28to be viral public pressure for her when she ordered, like,
- 18:31obviously she didn't order $7000 of pizza and who could pay that?
- 18:35That was like her original point is like I'm in such a unique
- 18:39position that I could pay that amount of money off, but like
- 18:42the average person could not just put $7000 down to pay off a
- 18:46credit card for pizza. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 18:49Mini Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
