- 0:19SPEAKER_02: And now, here's Steve and Jeff.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: Well, thanks, Johnny.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Great to be back here in the studio.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: And Jeff, good to see you again.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: Good to see you, Steve.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: How's it going?
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: I just had a marvelous dinner.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, I ate, I didn't even know what some of the foods were that I ate, but they were great.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: I ate them.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: They had sauces, some didn't, some did, some had chocolate, most didn't.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: It was beautiful.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: It was a beautiful thing.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: You know, I basically just had edibles for dinner.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: That's yeah.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: And they were strawberry flavored.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: It's my favorite flavor.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: It's been a busy time here, Steve.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm into this self-help and self-improvement, as you know.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, sure.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I think there's plenty of room for it.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: So I've been, you know, we've been cleaning out closets, we've been trying to get organized and you know, evaluating what we should keep, what we should throw away.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: And I found something that reminded me of when I was a little kid.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: And and wow, I don't know if you had this experience or not.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Do you know who Frank Edwards is?
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: I used to know a guy named Eddie Franks.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: I think that's his brother.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: It's the same guy, right?
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: It's the same guy, or it's his brother.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: It's his brother, yeah.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Frank Edwards wrote a series of books.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: And remember when we were little kids, you're like, I'm into dinosaurs, so you read all the dinosaur books that you could.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: But as I got older, I started like wondering about stories, you know, like the hook man, you know, and camping and scratching on the ground.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: That story's true.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: That happened to a friend of my cousin's brother who told me all about it.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: No, that's for real.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: So Frank Edwards basically collected those stories that are true.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: And you'd read them and you'd be scared shitless because he told you they were true.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: And he why would he why would he lie?
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Why was somebody named Frank Edwards lie?
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, come on.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: No, wait, no, Edward Frank.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Eddie Frank.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, he lied all the time.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: He's a liar.
- 2:13SPEAKER_01: He's famous for his lying, but it's the truth.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: No, no, he's not gonna I was uh flipping through one of the books, and there was one story in there that literally just scared the shit out of me.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: Want me to tell you a little bit about it?
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: I don't have enough handy wipes, Jeff, if it's gonna do that, but let's try it.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: The people at home they can clean up their own mess, you know.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and if we had organ music in the background, you know, we could make this a little more dramatic.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: But basically, I'll send Johnny looking for some organ music.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: Okay, could you?
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think Johnny needs to spend less time looking for his organ, though.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, no, he found his organ, and so did my mom, and so did you know a bunch of other people too.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, no, it's it's well known.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: So, anyways, in this story, but I think this is a story, yeah, it's a story about a family and a little girl, the only child of the family, and her name is Sarah.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: She's like nine years old.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: And one day she comes down for breakfast.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: She had had this dream, and she says to her father, I had this dream, I don't know what it means.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: And her father said, Well, tell me what the dream was.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: And in the dream, she says that she's sitting at a table and she says, God bless mommy, God bless daddy, God bless grandpa, but bye-bye to grandma.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: That's kind of selectively rude, you know?
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, totally.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: That's just totally that's just inappropriate, especially in a young child.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: That's troubling.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: But you know, the father, he's like, kids have imaginations, and you know, it probably doesn't mean much.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: But the next day, grandma dies.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: Grandma's gonna die.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: That doesn't mean much.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: No, it doesn't mean much.
- 3:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, what could that possibly mean?
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, what it meant was the next day they found out that grandma died in her sleep.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Again, father was like, Oh, well, that's just a coincidence, no big deal.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: So hey, I bet the police from the 103 were all over her.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: I'm sure.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: So the next couple nights, she's having trouble sleeping, and she comes down to the table and says to her, Dad, I had another dream.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: And he said, Well, what's this dream?
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: And she says, Well, in this dream at the table, and I say, God bless to mom and God bless to dad, and bye-bye to grandpa.
- 4:18SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: One by one.
- 4:20SPEAKER_01: One by one.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: One could call this serial murder, serial murder, and we talk to Cheerios here.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: You know, and you can guess what happened the next morning.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: Bye-bye, grandpa.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Grandpa's dead.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Now the dad is kind of freaked out.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: So a couple days later, he's still worried about it.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: So he like he doesn't drive to work anymore.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: He's like really careful.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: He stays at home, he's careful what he eats because he doesn't want to be the next one targeted.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: Well, let me just ask a question.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: In any of this preparation of like not driving or not eating, did he think, hmm, maybe I should have my daughter talk to someone?
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: Did that ever come up?
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Steve, this happens to everybody.
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: If I had a nickel for every time my daughter thought that I was gonna be dead the next day, I'd have a lot of nickels.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: Well, and my mom never made me talk to anyone either.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: And I turned out okay, right?
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: You know, yeah, you know, but I digress.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so anyway, so a couple days later, she comes down, she's very distressed, and he says, What's up?
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: And she says, I had another dream.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: And in my dream, I said, Hello to mom, love you, mom, and goodbye to you.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: And he's completely freaked out.
- 5:27SPEAKER_01: Goodbye to dad, huh?
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: To dad, yeah.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: So the next day comes and he's fine.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: And he says to his wife, I had a horrible day.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: I've been worried about this all day, but it turns out Sarah was wrong.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: And she said, Well, I had a bad day too, because the mailman died, you know, suddenly.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: And oh, yeah, yeah.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: And so that was kind of the story, which was really about dreams, but you guessed it, Steve.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: Frank Edwards says, but the truth was that you know, Sarah killed all of them.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: She's wacking.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: You know, it probably all started when she found out about the mailman being her dad, you know.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: That's probably when it started.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: Could be.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: It's just I'm gonna whack them all.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: Could be mom.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Why mom?
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: Why not leave?
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: You know, grandma seems like kind of an innocent bystander of all this.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: Why not leave her?
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: You know, what the heck?
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: You haven't met my grandma, she kind of deserved it.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: But anyway, Steve, the point of all this is that dreams mean something, even though in this case she actually murdered people.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: But but in for other people, dreams do mean something.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, Jeff.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: I am so glad you said that because that really does tie in with our show tonight.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: I was thinking about dreams too, and uh, dreams are gonna have a lot to do with this show.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: And talking about dreams when we were kids.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: You remember the TV shows back then that I'm sure are still living somewhere in the sub basement of our unconscious, we're still watching those shows.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: You remember all those shows?
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: It was like, boy, don't eat Welsh rarebit before you go to bed because you'll have nightmares.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: Remember all that?
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: It's like spicy cheese.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: What's gonna hurt you?
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: But oh, don't eat it.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, you'll have nightmares.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: Oh spicy cheese and toast.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: Come on.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: But point being, that was out there that and you know, it sounded like a bunch of stuff made up for these TV shows.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: But I was reading another article today.
- 7:06SPEAKER_02: Gosh, Jeff, we read so much, this is this is amazing.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: We are so literate.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: I was reading an article today, too, about psychology and about this psychological test.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: I think it was called the Carl Rogers Neighborhood Project or something, and it a test where they brought people in and they fed them stuff and then tested their dreams, and about a third of them had dreams based on the food and died.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: No, some did die because the study was like 50 years ago.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, I know.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, some have died, but you know, no, it's just yeah, yeah, that's that got me thinking that I actually invited someone to the show tonight who was just on the other side of that glass, and she is an expert in food leading to dreams.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: She's experimented on herself, and she tried all kinds of different foods for different dreams, and she wrote a book.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: So you know she knows what she's talking about.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: She wrote a book.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: She's literate.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: We just read.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: She wrote the book.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Oh, upset.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: Wrote a book called You Dream What You Eat.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: And I'd like to introduce her now.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: It's Mara Schmidt.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Mara, welcome to the show.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for having me, gentlemen.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: It's a pleasure to be here and help uh elevate, you know, my work with food and dreams.
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: It's just so exciting what you've done because the way I understand this, you began experimenting with food and you tried different food combinations to see what dreams they would create.
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: Is that kind of what happened?
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: It just started out with I've always had vivid dreams, and certain things would just make them even wilder.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: I remember dreams I had as an infant.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: I remember one of my first dreams was uh the Marlborough man coming out of the toilet.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: I must have been maybe two or three.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: What did it mean?
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Obviously, I'm in a lot of therapy and I always talk about my dreams because I but I make the mistake of going to Freudian therapists instead of Jungian.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: And so they just instead of diving into it, they just tell me, Oh, uh, Mara, your brain is just processing what it's experienced.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Your brain is like a washing machine, and it's like, well, a washing machine, you you add different detergents into it, it ends up with, you know, it affects the load of laundry.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: So it can produce different results.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: If you put in blue dye, you're gonna have blue clothes.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: If you put in bleach, you'll have white clothes, and it always smells really good.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: The clothes when they're done, you know.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: I sometimes sniff the bleach, even if I don't need to, you know, it's just it's just cut.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: I do too, or at least I hear about it.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: I'm certainly not endorsing the ingestion of bleach, but I I cannot speak to that.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: I am not a medical professional, I am just a traditional house mom who has time to get 10 hours of sleep at night and make artisanal dinners beforehand and just kind of see how they influence things.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: If you don't mind me asking, it's kind of a chicken or the egg question.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because it's food.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: We're talking about food.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: So it's like a chicken or chicken with eggs, chicken with eggs.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: It's good, little rice on the side.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: But my question maybe a Pinot Noir, you know, yeah.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: Oh, this is sounding great.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: It's actually funny.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Uh if I could just mention my first foray into food influencing my dreams happened with a chicken McNugget happy meal when I was six years old.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: My mother said, You should save that happy meal for tomorrow.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: If you eat it now, it's 9 p.m.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: You're going to have nightmares.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: And of course, I ignored her.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: And what happened?
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: I basically had a teen slasher film for a dream.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: Six years old.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: And so that kind of brings up my question to you.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Is your book more about, because I haven't read it yet, is your book more about having the experience of the dream and then finding out why you had that dream or manipulating your dream by eating something on purpose that would then give you a certain type of dream or a specific dream?
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: At this point, I mean, I don't think that this is the end of my exploration of this topic.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: Uh, so I would consider this part one of what could be a series of books on my Odyssey here.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: What I mainly do is I wake up and I immediately record what I was dreaming, and then I think back to what I ate the night before.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: You would think from the dreams, uh there would be some sort of correlation, like maybe I had orange juice before I dreamt about O.J.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Simpson as my boyfriend, or maybe I had a schnitzel before I dreamt that Arnold Schwarzenegger was my boyfriend.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: But no, I so far, and this is based on a pretty large pool of dreams, I I'm not really finding a correlation.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Maybe you could describe some of these dreams for us and then the foods that you ate, because I I understand.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Now I haven't read the book either, but I understand from our producers who I don't think they've read the book either, but they were saying that some of these dreams are really very detailed, quite vivid.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: Yes, quite exact.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Well, because this is a hot rodent man summer, right?
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Where this is the summer where we're elevating men with rodent-like features.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: And one of those rodent-like men of the moment is Jeremy Allen White.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: Well, yes, I mean, I may be married, I may be a trad wife, but I mean, I can't control my subconscious.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And the other night I dreamed that I was supposed to be packing boxes on a Friday, but instead I started binge watching the bear starring Jeremy Allen White.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Great show.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: It's a the bear starting a rodent man, I know.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: And as a promotion in my dream, Hulu had these life-size gummy androids of the character Jeremy Allen plays, Carmi.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: And you could snack on the android as you watched the show.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: And again, I'm sorry, yes, I love my husband dearly, but in the dream, I started hooking up with my anatomically correct gummy, Carmi Android.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: But then as we were smoking a cigarette or whatever, the android wanted to make plans with me.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: And a PA started rapping on the window of my bedroom, telling him to come back to set.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: And at that point in the dream, I was like, wait, what is real and what is fake?
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And the figure, the gummy android, was like, You ate Carmi, but this moment we had was real.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: I'm the actor.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I really feel like this relationship has run its course.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: And by that time, because remember, at the start of the dream, I was supposed to be packing boxes.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: I had packed zero boxes.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: And my mother-in-law was like, You spent all day watching that lusty restaurant show.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: And I wanted to explain that I had accidentally had a trice with a gummy Jeremy Allen White, but I I didn't want to get myself into further trouble.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: And then I woke up, and um, you'll never believe what I had before bed.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, I I can't even imagine probably gummies of some sort, I would think, right?
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: Lavash pizza.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, that makes total sense.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: Oh, that'll do it.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: That was my second guess.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: I was getting ready to say that.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: Just mechanically speaking, of course, in the dream this would make sense, but mechanically speaking, if you eat the gummy, can you then have a tryst with the same gummy you just ate?
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: You know, good question, Steve.
- 14:55SPEAKER_00: Again, I've been seeking, I've been craving correlations, and um, that's something I could look into for the next dream, you know, whether I eat gummies or gummy androids, I don't know if that's an actual thing, but as part of my trad wife work, I do love making things from scratch.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: So who is to stop me from crafting a gummy Jeremy Allen White while my husband's at work?
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, you absolutely could, yes.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: And I would say, you know, if you do ask people, ask, ask the Jungians about that, because the Freudians would say it has something to do with your mother or your genitals or your mother's genitals, or but I digress anyway.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: So that's amazing that you were able to have that level of detail.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: Are all your dreams that detailed?
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: And I would be lying if I were not disclosing non-food things I consume that probably contribute to the the vividness, oh, like the robustness of my dreams.
- 15:54SPEAKER_02: Like gummies, you mean?
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Uh no, uh I'm not that exciting.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: I am trying to quit food.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: I am trying to quit smoking.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: And so I have been on nicotine patches and nicotine gum, and those both on the boxes have the warning, may cause vivid dreams.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: So that could be another factor.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:17SPEAKER_02: And then you do the patch and the gum, and then if you do both of those and you smoke, oh boy, you rip roaring.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: I think that my heart would explode if I tried that.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: Oh it would be very emotional.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: You're right.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: So I could see that for sure.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: Could you give us another example and maybe give us a chance to take a couple guesses as to what you might have eaten?
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: Because that would be kind of fun, probably for the people playing at home too, Steve.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: Don't you think you would want and certainly this will make it to the home version of the Stephen Jeff show and people can play at home and they can have endless numbers of dreams.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: They can just spend hours creating the detail and then guess the food.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Well, let's see.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, the other night I was in a bookstore and um Tom Scarrot was there, and he was acting incredulous when he learned that I guess there was like a beat literature section, and I'm familiar with your Jack Kerouac and your, oh, who's the man that wrote Naked Lunch?
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Uh William Burroughs.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: William Burroughs.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: William Burroughs.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: See how literate we are, Jeff?
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, we're so literate.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say Frank Edwards, but Eddie Franks.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: And then Tom Scarrot was there, and he was acting incredulous that there was some beat poet or uh author that I didn't recognize.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: And there was this book, this last edition of this rare book by this obscure beat author.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: And so he grabbed the book and challenged the bookstore owner and me to a fight for the book.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I didn't ask to be in this, Tom.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: And the fight consisted of like dropping sheets of paper onto the ground and hoping that one would fall squarely on top of the other.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And it was very stressful.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: So I intentionally lost.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: And before we guess the food, I'm gonna get was that obscure beat poet?
- 18:24SPEAKER_02: Was that Frank O'Hara?
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: See how literally we're not that uh meditations in an emergency.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: That's not obscure.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: Very good, very good.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, I feel like I'm back in lit class, which I mostly slept through, but and I had vivid dreams when I'm sleeping there too.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: But Jeff, what do you what do you think she ate?
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: My first thought was grilled cheese with a special kind of cheese, you know, not your basic yellow cheese, yellow cheddar cheese or whatever, but more of a that taco cheese, you know, where it's got multicolors to it, sort of like a queso, queso, you know, with kind of French bread.
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: You understand, Jeff, that that is just Spanish for cheese.
- 19:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, it just means cheese.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Of course, of course.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Okay, what does cheese mean?
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: Are you talking about the Mexican blend that's better, pepperjack?
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Am I right?
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Am I right?
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: I knew it.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Steve, so good at the end.
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: Oh, let me guess.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Let me guess.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Let me guess what's don't don't say that I'm right.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: I'm thinking for a dream like that, let's see, beat poets, beetrothers.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: I'm thinking you ate sushi rice with some grains of parsley added in.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: And it's the parsley that really does it.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: The rice really is just a is kind of a buffer, you know.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: But the parsley is really what does it.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: I like that too.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: You can't leave us in suspense.
- 19:45SPEAKER_02: What what'd you eat there, Mara?
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: Manhattan clam chowder.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: Oh shit! Oh, Manhattan clam chowder.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: See, I was gonna guess New England if that would, but it's Manhattan.
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: Manhattan clam.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: The Manhattan is the red stuff, right?
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: So it was the red with the tomato base, the tomato base, and it's the tomato set off at dream lights.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Which are also red, and you know, I think.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's why it was red.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: There aren't white beets, so New England clam chowder would be out of the question, right?
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: These are the types of dreams you talk about in your book, right?
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, yes, I go on.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: And and sometimes there's food in the dreams, and those figure into the dreams.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: A few years ago, I had a dream where I was in a bathrobe and I walked into a gala, and there was a beautiful sculpture of Jennifer Tilley made of ice cream.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: And I took a spoonful of the ice cream and I ate it.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: It was a coconut ice cream.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: It was the most delicious ice cream I had ever eaten.
- 20:47SPEAKER_02: I see Jennifer Tilley as more of a more of a butter brickle, you know.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: I I did, but but go ahead.
- 20:53SPEAKER_02: Coconut coconut sounds that's kind of refreshing.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: That sounds good.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: Okay, go ahead.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: It was very refreshing.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: But then I looked down and I had turned into Jennifer Tilley.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: And I felt she's very voluptuous, and I was just in this little robe.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: It was, I suppose it was a variation on the dreaming that you're naked.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's a common trope uh in dreams.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: But in this one, I was Jennifer Tilley in a bathrobe after eating Jennifer Tilly-shaped ice cream.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: And you were at the gala.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Now, were the gala people were they all eating Jennifer Tilley as well?
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: No, they were just looking at me, Jennifer Tilley, and I'm not sure if I had a gala.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: Eating Jennifer Tilly.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: I don't think we've had a guest on this show that had that level of detail to their experience.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: You're just really smart.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: Just a lot of the stuff that you said, I have no fucking idea what you mean, but that's why you're so smart because you're just two steps above where I am.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: I'm very impressed.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: Steve, we just are getting so many talented guests.
- 21:59SPEAKER_02: I'll tell.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: You, as this show grows, as this show progresses, as this show comes out of its shell, as this show comes out of its cocoon or our mother's cocoon, we are getting the most intelligent, the most in-demand guests anywhere in the world.
- 22:14SPEAKER_02: Here is an example right here.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: Author of a new book, You Dream What You Eat.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: Now, Mara, I gotta ask, it sounds like you've been doing this for quite some time.
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: How long did all this research take?
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Well, first of all, it just started as me just journaling, journaling my dreams and living your life and what did I eat?
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: But uh it got to be where I had a following, and it got to be where people are sort of like you wanted to guess what I had eaten before a dream.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: It's escalated to the point where people find out what I'm eating, and then they want to guess what I'm going to dream.
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: I like that game too.
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: See, now to me, I would think that would be much harder because granted there are an infinite number of food combinations, but the level of detail, each level of detail in this dream is its own million to one odds.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: So to put them all together, I mean, that's like winning every lottery in every state in the country on the same day.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: And not only that, but I dreamed that I'm Jennifer Tilley at times, but most people probably wouldn't, right?
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: They would probably be her sister.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: Well, you know, sister's name.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: Megan.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Megan Tilley.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: Some people choose Megan, you know.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: You know, funny you should say that, Jeff, because one night I had a dream that you were Jennifer Tilly too.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: And I I woke up screaming.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: Theresa said, Well, go sleep in the other room if you're gonna do that.
- 23:41SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you brought that up, Steve, because uh, is it okay if if I tell you one of my dreams?
- 23:46SPEAKER_01: And maybe I would love to hear about one of your dreams.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Okay, this one this was a rec recurring dream.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: I I have no idea what I was eating.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Maybe you can kind of direct me on maybe where I can go with that.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: But uh the dream is always is pretty much always the same.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: And it it has to do with Steve and I being Siamese twins, and we're joined together, and we do our comedy together.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: And the dream begins with Steve and I joined at the rear.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: So we're in the round, which is kind of like a dinner club.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: Rotating, yes, and we're rotating in a circle while we're presenting.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: That would fit our audience demographic, I think.
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: Oh, totally.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: Dinner theater in the round.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, I think we're yeah, okay.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: Then we go from there to dinner, but now we're not joined at the hips anymore.
- 24:40SPEAKER_01: Now we're joined at the mouth and we're trying to eat, but it's hard to eat because we are joined at the mouth and we want different things to eat.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: And then finally we go to bed and we're joined at the feet.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: And when we're joined at the feet, we can't lay down in the bed together.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: And then just as we're falling asleep, I turn around and it's not Steve, it's Carrot Top.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: Boy, don't tell that one to the Freudians.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: It's it's intense.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm no dream interpreter, but I mean, I feel like the significance of that dream is pretty obvious.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: When you have your butts together, that's like you are connected in the output you you bring to the world through this show.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: And when your mouths are connected, it's like you are working together in the media that you consume and the people you bring in and the information you take in to create that output.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: And then that carrot top shows up.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, maybe that's a fear that you're that we're not funny, that you could just redevolve into prop comics.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: Well, and and being joined at the feed, does that mean that we're not going anywhere?
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: Or where you go, you go together?
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: Where we go, we go together.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: This kind of reminds me of a dream I had that I think really brought to light so many of my anxieties as a trad wife wearing Laura Ashley dresses here on the prairie.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: I dreamt that I was scheduled to perform poetry at an art studio in Mitchell, Nebraska, which is out in the western part of Nebraska where I grew up.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: And the art studio was owned by Drew Barrymore.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: And I stepped outside the studio and realized she was slowly buying up the whole town.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: And her aunt was running the town newspaper.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: And Drew Barrymore started a news station and opened up a gift shop.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: And I spent most of the dream talking to Drew's handler.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: I guess she couldn't be trusted on her own.
- 26:49SPEAKER_00: She needed a handler.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: And apparently, Drew wanted to sell the town some very questionable supplements, but her handler kept sabotaging those efforts to keep the town safe and healthy.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: I was so overwhelmed by just this Drew Barrymore takeover that I went to a little lounge in a little streetcar and I ordered a Manhattan.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: And it had like the lounge had a, even though it was a streetcar, it had like a cherub theme.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: And the little streetcar lounge was called eugenics.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: And I was like, did Drew Barrymore name a streetcar lounge eugenics?
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: And the townspeople of Mitchell were like, no, we called it that before she got here.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: Gosh, Jeff, can you guess what she ate before that?
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: No, I can't.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: Well, you go first, Steve.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: I have a couple ideas, but you go first.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Drew Barrymore, I'm gonna say you ate Peking Duck with plum wine.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: The only thing that comes to mind is that she was eating roast pork in the shape of like E.T.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: Sometimes when I make roast pork, it kind of looks like it, you know, like it could be.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: That was kind of what I went with.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: A roast pork.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: Jeff, you are onto something.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: I had a Fairbury hot dog.
- 28:13SPEAKER_01: That is close.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: That's pretty close to roast pork.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: But Steve, you were close too, I think.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Peking duck, same thing.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, same thing.
- 28:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Plum wine.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, same thing.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Same thing.
- 28:23SPEAKER_01: Well, I just feel smarter.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: I do too.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness.
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: And Jeff, you know, unfortunately, they are gonna kick us out here of eccentric Ladyland Studios in just a minute.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: But I have to say, Mara, thank you so much for coming on the show.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: And I wish you a lot of success with your book, You Dream What You Eat.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Mara, it was great meeting you.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: My pleasure.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for having me.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: And listen, anytime you're out on the prairie and you want to get back on the show, you just let us know.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: We'd like to have you back on and really talk us up out there on the prairie, should there be any other people nearby.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: I'll be sure to do that.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Oh, thank you.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: And maybe Steve got to go out and grab something to eat.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: You know, I think for uh you know though, Jeff, as long as Johnny's back and as long as Johnny is, you know, relatively sober, I think we should get some prizes for Mara.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: So, Johnny, what do you have for Mara Schmidt?
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: Right, Steve?
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Mara can chill out in her little safe house on the prairie with a year's supply of rat-shaped gummies, courtesy of the Cush Collection's Elite Sinaloa line.
- 29:24SPEAKER_02: Her dreams will be in vivid colors with these beautiful and allegedly euphoric gummies, each one of which carries a personal endorsement from Narcotics Androgynous.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Cush gummies.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: They ain't pudding, they ain't pie.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: They're the food that'll get you high.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: And when the munchies hit, Mara can keep them at bay with Tomco's easy cheesy Welsh rare kit.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: Just one serving will get her dreams dancing all night.
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: And we'll also include 30 gallons of coconut ice cream by Tillies, the best coconuts in town.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: This has been a Reverie production in association with celebrity-induced media.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: Be sure and follow or subscribe to the Steve and Jeff Show wherever you listen to podcasts.
- 30:07SPEAKER_02: Right as a review while you're there, too.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: This is Johnny speaking.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: As you can hear, I found my organ.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: I could have given it to them at the beginning of the show, but with what they pay me, I figured I could at least have my own music.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: I bet Steve's mom would go for this organ piece too.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Good night.
