Transcript
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: It's too many men on the market presented by fancy credit unit.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: LC production.
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: The Halloween edition of Too Many Men on the Mike.
- 1:12SPEAKER_05: And uh uh my gosh, it just seemed like October just started, right?
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: I mean, it feels like it was just like February.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, I mean it's just been one of those years.
- 1:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, we uh we started off with uh you know finish up the mid-states broadcasts in January and February, and you know, we've kind of gone on this journey throughout uh the spring and summer.
- 1:44SPEAKER_03: Next thing you know, hockey season rolls around again, and we're a year older.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: And uh yeah, I can't believe it.
- 1:52SPEAKER_03: You know, there's pumpkins on my front porch, so I'll literally be able to say if we ever get frost, there's frost on the pumpkins.
- 1:58SPEAKER_05: Um well, you know, I I I have to just uh give a shout out to your uh quarter zip where you're you're you're looking a little frosty with your too many men on the mic.
- 2:11SPEAKER_05: Uh white quarterzip, courtesy of 5B design.
- 2:14SPEAKER_05: Shout out to Shannon.
- 2:15SPEAKER_05: Shout out to Shannon.
- 2:17SPEAKER_05: She does that, does there, but uh you're you're looking, uh dare I say, a little winter esque there, Coach.
- 2:24SPEAKER_03: You know, it's it's one of those things where if you get up early before work and go golf, um, it's the perfect, you know, it's the perfect weight to it.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, as that sun starts creeping up, you know, over the eastern hills there, it's not too hot.
- 2:40SPEAKER_03: You know, it's not too hot, it's not too cold.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: You pulled up a little bit, you know.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: But with me, you know, as I'm sweating over a putt, I like to keep it down low so my my nerves don't get to me with my sweat running down my hands in the butter.
- 2:53SPEAKER_03: But yeah, it's it's great.
- 2:55SPEAKER_03: I like this one.
- 2:56SPEAKER_03: This is the Adidas one for all you folks at home who are interested in some swag.
- 3:00SPEAKER_03: You know, look up uh too many men on the mic, give us a shout, and we'll figure out a way to get you some really, really fly gear, especially as we're heading into the season where you're gonna be in a rink.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: And not only is it cold when you get into the rink, it's probably gonna be cold when you're coming into the rink.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: So unless you're in Dallas, of course, uh where you are right now, where fun fact, I believe there are more ice rinks per capita in Dallas than anywhere else in North America.
- 3:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm on assignment.
- 3:25SPEAKER_05: I'm uh scouting local hockey rinks, figuring out ways to bring our too many men on the mic content into youth hockey rinks throughout the Dallas area for all the reasons you just talked about, coach.
- 3:39SPEAKER_05: So uh it is a southern Mecca of hockey.
- 3:43SPEAKER_05: Mecca, that's my big word for today on today's broadcast.
- 3:47SPEAKER_05: And uh we're gonna spread the gospel down here in the great state of Texas.
- 3:51SPEAKER_05: You know everything.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: You are definitely in the Bible belt now the way you're talking.
- 3:54SPEAKER_03: You hit Mecca gospel.
- 4:02SPEAKER_05: Well, let's let's get into let's get into some hockey news.
- 4:06SPEAKER_05: Uh I'm sure you saw this.
- 4:09SPEAKER_05: Uh Connor Helleback's off the board.
- 4:11SPEAKER_05: He was claimed it happened.
- 4:13SPEAKER_05: Uh there was a stalemate, there was a negotiation that was going on.
- 4:18SPEAKER_05: It's amazing how this happens because as I was watching the news come in, there was this period of time where Connor Helleback wasn't getting paid, and there were these great websites that fans had out there where they literally were tracking dollars, and then ultimately this led up to a date and time where that wasn't gonna happen anymore, and then the team had to start paying him again.
- 4:43SPEAKER_05: And then there were all these discussions about him coming back into the team and were the players gonna accept him, and how all that was gonna go down, and uh lo and behold, uh I didn't have uh the New Jersey Doubles on my uh bingo card, did you?
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: They've been kind of nibbling around the edges, I think, on a lot of things.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: There was some word about them with Dylan Larkin uh earlier in the season as well.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: Personally, and again, you know, I I work with a former goalie, I coach with a former goalie.
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: Um I love goalies.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: This goalie's from Michigan, even.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: Um here we go.
- 5:28SPEAKER_05: Here we go.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: New Jersey gave up way too much.
- 5:32SPEAKER_03: Way too much, in my opinion.
- 5:34SPEAKER_05: Looking looking on it in hindsight, it it looks like some some good chess playing from afar and in the rear view mirror.
- 5:43SPEAKER_05: So Mark Stern went out the door, he goes to Florida.
- 5:48SPEAKER_05: Uh so maybe they were thinking about this months ago.
- 5:51SPEAKER_05: Maybe this deal's kind of been baking in the background and we just didn't know about it.
- 5:57SPEAKER_05: But uh, you know, you listen to the NATO morning skate, you listen to uh broadcasting smart people out in the professional hockey world, and I just didn't hear a lot of conversations about New Jersey, so a little bit of a surprise to me, but you know, he's with Jack Hughes, uh, which I'm sure is only gonna drive conversations about Quinn Hughes and what's gonna happen with that.
- 6:23SPEAKER_05: So uh, but yeah, Connor Hellibach's off the board, cross that one off, and now we gotta see what happens with uh with Hughes.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, look, I I love me, I I love me some some Connor Helibuk.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Love it.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: Let me see if I can put this up, get this up on the screen here, because I'd be interested to hear what what our um friends in the audience and in and listeners have to say.
- 6:48SPEAKER_03: Let me try and see if I can get this get this up on the screen.
- 6:52SPEAKER_05: Uh I mean pulling up you're pulling up an Olympic game.
- 6:56SPEAKER_05: I know you are.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, no.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: I I am actually what I'm doing here is I'm gonna I'm gonna pull up.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: Let me see if I could share this.
- 7:05SPEAKER_03: Let me see if I can share my screen.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: We are without our uh we are without our uh our erstwhile uh um uh producer today, Grant.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: He's not on assignment, he had a death in the family, and he's attending a wake.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: And so I am gonna try to do my level best here to put uh to put this uh to put this on the on the screen here.
- 7:28SPEAKER_05: Uh you got the bad producer skills, coach.
- 7:31SPEAKER_03: I try, I try, I try.
- 7:33SPEAKER_03: Let's see if we can do this here.
- 7:34SPEAKER_03: Let's see if we can do this.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: There we go.
- 7:35SPEAKER_03: So I mean, look.
- 7:39SPEAKER_03: The Devils get one asset.
- 7:42SPEAKER_03: One asset.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: A 32-year-old goalie who's never won a meaningful playoff round.
- 7:53SPEAKER_03: Yes, played well in the in the Olympics.
- 7:56SPEAKER_03: Give him all props.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: But look at the look at the talent on the left side of that ledger.
- 8:02SPEAKER_03: Mercer.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: Dawson Dawson.
- 8:05SPEAKER_05: Dawson Mercer's a dumb.
- 8:07SPEAKER_03: Love him.
- 8:08SPEAKER_05: Love him.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: I I mean, I don't know.
- 8:11SPEAKER_03: I it's just maybe it's just me.
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: Um and again, I I'm the guy that, you know, when I um when we used to play uh, you know, what was it, NHL 96 with my with my uh um with my kids, I had my screen name as I hate goalies.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: Um so I'm not I'm not I'm not gonna, you know, I'm I'm definitely um, you know, I'm definitely biased on that piece, but I think they gave up too much.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: I really do.
- 8:47SPEAKER_03: Be interested to hear what your thoughts are on that.
- 8:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I I don't know.
- 8:52SPEAKER_05: Uh I I guess I would answer it this way.
- 8:54SPEAKER_05: Florida won two Stanley Cups with an older goalie.
- 8:59SPEAKER_05: And so I kind of feel like there is a belief in the NHL community that, you know, you don't have to have a young guy, a younger guy, I should say, in goal.
- 9:14SPEAKER_05: And so maybe they're banking on that.
- 9:16SPEAKER_05: They're looking at him and saying he's 32 and we can get uh five or six years out of the sky, and uh and that's a pretty substantial window in an NHL team's um you know uh view.
- 9:30SPEAKER_05: So uh do I think it's worth all of those guys?
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 9:34SPEAKER_05: I'm a big Dawson Mercer fan.
- 9:36SPEAKER_05: I've always liked him.
- 9:38SPEAKER_05: Uh he's always been kind of a hidden guy on that jersey team to me.
- 9:43SPEAKER_05: And so maybe this is his way of stepping out, but Winnipeg needs some complimentary scoring.
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: I think they got that in Mercer.
- 9:51SPEAKER_05: He's a 20-goal guy.
- 9:52SPEAKER_05: He can give you 20 goals a year, which is a lot.
- 9:56SPEAKER_05: And uh and and they needed uh they need a little bit more firepower on that offense.
- 10:03SPEAKER_05: So I think uh both teams got some needs, and then uh, you know, Winnipeg got some prospects out of it too.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: Is it too much?
- 10:13SPEAKER_05: We'll see.
- 10:14SPEAKER_05: Um but he had to have at least uh, you know, uh Mercer and B Sad, two guys that can contribute.
- 10:22SPEAKER_05: Although Nick, I think's coming off an injury a little banged up.
- 10:26SPEAKER_05: Uh so we'll see how he comes on the backside of that injury.
- 10:30SPEAKER_05: But um, you know, uh I like it.
- 10:33SPEAKER_05: I the the the Mercer piece is I think great for Winnipeg.
- 10:38SPEAKER_03: All right, okay.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: I've got some theories.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: Um who was the goaltender when the Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup?
- 10:54SPEAKER_05: Uh it was Carter Hart.
- 10:56SPEAKER_05: Yep, yeah.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 10:58SPEAKER_03: Nope, it wasn't Carter Hart.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 11:01SPEAKER_05: He uh who was the guy that took his place at the end when he ran out of gas.
- 11:05SPEAKER_05: I don't, I, I don't uh there was Aiden Hill at one point on on uh a prior run.
- 11:12SPEAKER_05: I can't even remember the goals on the colour.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: Who who was the goalie for Colorado Avalanche when they won?
- 11:20SPEAKER_05: Well, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:22SPEAKER_05: I hear you.
- 11:23SPEAKER_05: I hear you.
- 11:23SPEAKER_05: So solid points here.
- 11:24SPEAKER_05: You don't need the you don't need a star goalie essentially to win if you got a great team in front of you.
- 11:30SPEAKER_05: I hear you.
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I mean I have a theory.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: I mean, look, yes, you can make the argument Bob is is a future Hall of Famer.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: Uh obviously Vasileski's a future Hall of Famer, but I just think gone are the days where you need to have this A plus plus goaltender.
- 11:48SPEAKER_03: I don't even know what an A plus plus goaltender is.
- 11:51SPEAKER_05: Okay, but let me get be devil's advocate with you.
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: Um religious euphemism.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: I know, right?
- 11:59SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 12:00SPEAKER_05: Praise the Lord.
- 12:02SPEAKER_05: Um didn't you need didn't you need an A plus plus goalie to win those two Stanley Cups in Florida against Connor McDavid?
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think Bob was was very, very good.
- 12:18SPEAKER_03: I think Florida has an A plus plus roster.
- 12:22SPEAKER_03: Well yeah, yeah.
- 12:24SPEAKER_03: Like it's pretty easy to be an A plus.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, they were running Bob out of town in Columbus and his first couple years.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: So it's the guys in front, too.
- 12:35SPEAKER_05: Well, and McD and McDavid was only scoring uh one and a half goals a game then.
- 12:40SPEAKER_05: He's not scoring like the the three goals a game he's scoring right now.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: You know who shut him down last night?
- 12:46SPEAKER_05: Who?
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: The rookie goalie from Detroit first first start ever.
- 12:51SPEAKER_05: How did I know?
- 12:53SPEAKER_05: How did I know?
- 12:54SPEAKER_05: Of course, of course.
- 12:56SPEAKER_05: Wait, is that the is is that the guy that came up from the farm team?
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: Farm team came right up.
- 13:03SPEAKER_03: Um listen to this.
- 13:04SPEAKER_03: It first off, of course, Dylan Larkin scores with 70 seconds left.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: Um and then so they tie it up, and then the um the kid, I'm trying to think of his name.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: Start his last name starts with a P.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: Um he's from he was in Grand Rapids last year in the AHL, was like goaltender year.
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: Um and he basically shut them down.
- 13:33SPEAKER_03: On top of that, in the shootout, listen to who he faced in the shootout.
- 13:38SPEAKER_03: McDavid, Dreisidal, Nugent Hopkins.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: And he shut and none of them scored.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: None of them scored.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: So yeah, Pastava is his name.
- 13:50SPEAKER_03: He's uh he's a Czech Republic guy, Chechia guy.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: And uh yeah, faced 24, 27 shots, 24 saves.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: Um so yeah, you know, just you know, throwing it in there.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: So but again, a nobody goalie.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: It it's I don't know.
- 14:05SPEAKER_03: I I just I feel like what's more important is to have a you know strong defense and strength up the middle.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: I guess goalie's technically up the middle because they're you know, you know, at the end of the real road there.
- 14:17SPEAKER_05: So all right.
- 14:18SPEAKER_05: Well, we're gonna dig into this more.
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: Let's uh let's bring our guest in tonight.
- 14:24SPEAKER_05: And uh uh with us kicking off mid-state's high school hockey night, not game of the week, night this week, uh, who better than to have Owen Backer part of the live broadcasting crew for the University of Missouri ACHA hockey team.
- 14:47SPEAKER_05: Owen, we're kicking off the beginning of our broadcast on this journey around high school hockey.
- 14:55SPEAKER_05: You're already in the journey, and you're doing it with ACH hockey at Mizzo, uh, and uh covering other games that Mizzou's playing, maybe even outside of town.
- 15:05SPEAKER_05: So thanks for joining us tonight.
- 15:07SPEAKER_05: Welcome to the Too Many Men on the Mic Show.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: Oh I think I I yeah, there we go.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Thank you for having me, boys, and I am happy to be here.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: We'll edit that, we'll edit that.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: Nobody's the broadcast professional on the show here.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: That'll be edited.
- 15:31SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah.
- 15:32SPEAKER_05: Uh so Owen, I I told Jared that uh when I was in attendance a couple weeks ago at uh one of the recent University of Missouri ACHA hockey games, I saw you guys here in the middle of the stands.
- 15:47SPEAKER_05: And I have to tell you, uh, what a cool experience.
- 15:50SPEAKER_05: You guys do a really good job making it into a thing.
- 15:55SPEAKER_05: I mean, you got the national anthem, uh, the crowds are pretty regularly packed.
- 16:00SPEAKER_05: It's really become a community thing, which is really cool to see uh because we talk on the show about everything from kids that are at the beginning of their journey all the way up to ATU and beyond ATU, and that's ACHA hockey, right?
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and it's it's people outside of that realm kind of thing.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: It's like, okay, you play high school and you go to like NCAA or you go to the OHL or whatever, and then you go to the pros or not.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: And it's like, well, there's this there's a massive in-between ground between those things where you know your average one-of-the-mill high school player and you're you're NHL player, you're AHL player, and it's like the the product uh on the ice, like you still have a bunch of guys who are are competitors who really like to compete, who have in some cases quite a bit of pedigree and you know behind them.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: And and I mean, if you love the sport of hockey, like it doesn't really matter as long as they're playing the game well, and then it doesn't really matter what league it's in, and and you kind of forget when you're in that and you're just sitting in the stands and you're watching, you're not thinking this is ACHA to hockey.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: You're just like, this is great, I'm enjoying this.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: I love it, I love it.
- 17:16SPEAKER_05: So, Owen, tell our listeners a little bit about yourself.
- 17:20SPEAKER_05: Where are you from?
- 17:21SPEAKER_05: What you're studying uh at the university, and how did you end up calling uh University of Missouri ACHA hockey?
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, so I'm uh I'm a St.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: Louis guy.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: I'm from Kirkwood specifically, um, and always loved hockey and I've always loved broadcasting.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: So in high school, I did all the football games and all of the hockey games because Kirkwood had a pretty good is a pretty good hockey program.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: Um, and some of those guys actually filtered into to Mizzou's program as well, which is fun.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: And so freshman year, uh 2023.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: I'm doing stuff for KCOU, which is the student radio for Missouri.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: They're doing football, baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, you know, etc.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: But I want to do hockey, so I'm I'm kind of asking, like, hey, I know Mizzou has a hockey team because I've seen them on Instagram.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: What's the deal?
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: And they say, no, yeah, we they we do, but case you use a cover on contact this guy, and they gave me uh the number of a man by the name of Luca Vitali, who was at the time the head of the Mizzou broadcast division.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: Um, I interviewed as a freshman, he took me on, I started calling games, um, and by the end of the year, me and another one of the broadcasters who's a year older than me, Ian Pap Rocky, were appointed the co-heads of the broadcast division for the years going forward.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: He since graduated last year, so now it's just me.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: I'm running it, I'm running it by myself.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: And I try to, you know, get all the play-by-play reps I can in, obviously, but also still managing all the team and the broadcast and the YouTube and making sure everybody is trained up and knows what to do with graphics and and with the mics and all that stuff.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: Well, we're gonna call you Jared Backer because you're running the production all by yourself.
- 19:19SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay, yeah.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: Just tonight.
- 19:24SPEAKER_03: Just tonight.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: Um so Owen, uh, is broadcast journalism, is that what I know Mizzo's got a great um you know, history of journalism and and broadcasting.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: A lot of local anchors here um went to Mizzou.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: Is that something that you're gonna be pursuing once you graduate?
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: You know, is this something that you're going to continue on, maybe if you go into postgraduate and stay stick around?
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, talk a little bit about that piece, and then we'd love to hear.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: Um ACHA is not what it was 30 plus years ago.
- 19:59SPEAKER_03: So it's very much, like you said, competitive and it has a following amongst the students.
- 20:04SPEAKER_03: So we'd love to hear all about that.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: But tell us a little bit more about your plans and um and what your goals are, you know, once you're done with undergrad.
- 20:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you know, what you see is what you get with me.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: It's I'm a play-by-play announcer, and that's what I I want to do.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: I've kind of figured out, you know, I've done all the kind of figuring things out process throughout high school and early college, and it's it's what I want to do.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: I've been doing it for like five years now, and I've never gotten burned out.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: I've never, you know, even in the all the work that you have to do, I've I've always been like, this is what I want to do.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: So um, and definitely be in the sports world.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I'm a sports management major.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: I have gotten a lot of tape, and luckily for me, is I was the youngest person on the Mizu hockey team when I joined, and so I've kind of seen everybody else graduate and sort of like be able to use their cred with Mizzou hockey and go far places.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: Uh Luca Vitali, the guy who signed me on, he wasn't a play-by-play guy, he was a graphics guy, but he was able to parlay his work from Mizou hockey into he's now a one of the graphic designers for the Chicago Wolves of the Age.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: Oh no, yeah, yeah, right up.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: They went to the finals his first year working there, and he's like working into like June, like firing up graphics in case they win the championship, in case they lose the championship, all that stuff.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, Yeah, well, they swoop Jill right out of the zoo.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: And as long as we can keep building this hockey program and get more eyes on it, maybe more people say, Oh, well, let's get some some guys out of there.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: And I've been trying to train up the younger guys too, you know, to really make sure they're doing their best and and really have a solid foundation for what I'm going, so that hopefully this program can you know keeps getting built up.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: And maybe one day the having Mizzou hockey on your resume will be enough to just boom, instant, instant job offer.
- 21:53SPEAKER_05: I love it.
- 21:54SPEAKER_05: I love it.
- 21:54SPEAKER_05: What that's awesome.
- 21:56SPEAKER_05: So it sounds like uh your experience is really.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: Taken you and your predecessors on to your hockey journey, in this case, your hockey broadcasting journey.
- 22:08SPEAKER_05: Curiosity is getting the most of me.
- 22:10SPEAKER_05: I just need to know on a scale of one to ten, Owen, how would you rate your skills on the ice?
- 22:16SPEAKER_05: Are you a prolific skater?
- 22:19SPEAKER_05: Uh can you skate at all?
- 22:21SPEAKER_05: Can you um uh dominate, uh pick up hockey?
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: Where are you on the on the ranking, would you say?
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: Love hockey.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: Breathe hockey, bleed hockey.
- 22:36SPEAKER_01: It's a favorite sport.
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: Do not know how to ice skate.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: Don't never tried once when I was four, fell, cried, never tried it again.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: And substitute, and which I'm like now kind of like, all right, I gotta learn.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: This is ridiculous, but it's it's something I just never did when I was younger.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: Because honestly, I was a bigger football fan than I was a hockey fan, so that's what I played.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: And then when the Rams were, I was gonna say left when no, when the Rams were illegally stolen from St.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Louis, kind of uh a little bit.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: I was still a blues fan, obviously, but I really kind of became a sports refugee at that point, and then I got really into hockey, and at that point, I'm like, well, I'm in you know, middle school, I don't really feel like learning how to ice skate, but that's that's where I'm too late, never too late.
- 23:18SPEAKER_03: Ask our producer when he's gonna need them.
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: Grant Saul Yeah, so you're going exactly where I was gonna go, Jared.
- 23:25SPEAKER_05: So uh Owen, do you I take it you come home for the Thanksgiving and kind of Christmas holidays?
- 23:31SPEAKER_05: Uh I know the hockey team has a break during their Christmas holidays, but you're coming back to St.
- 23:36SPEAKER_05: Louis uh here in the next uh month or so, right?
- 23:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for for Thanksgiving and then for Christmas, unless Mizzou hockey's playing.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: I have to double check the schedule.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Sometimes they have a game over break and I I'm I'll be back.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: I don't miss a game.
- 23:48SPEAKER_05: But so so so I have a challenge for you.
- 23:51SPEAKER_05: The challenge is I'd like to see you and our producer Grant Salzman on the ice together.
- 23:59SPEAKER_05: And you guys uh we'll we'll come up with a good challenge for you.
- 24:03SPEAKER_05: Okay, but uh we'll get you around the team, we'll give you an opportunity because Grant claims that he has uh hockey skills.
- 24:13SPEAKER_05: Uh Coach, I I I I I remember him saying that.
- 24:17SPEAKER_05: I remember him saying that he he believed he had some skills when he was on the ice with us last time at practice, right?
- 24:23SPEAKER_03: I I think he said, you know, I was able to broom the puck towards the net.
- 24:30SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, he he started to get a little bit of a big head saying his hockey's not as tough.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: But uh, you know, we have a lot of fun with him.
- 24:38SPEAKER_03: And Grant's also, he's a proud alumnus of the University of Missouri, Missouri.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: He's working for Bleacher.
- 24:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he's worked for the he's worked for the uh Cardinals as well and in um uh 101.
- 24:51SPEAKER_03: So again, uh it's a great pedigree with you know sports media and journalism coming from your school there.
- 25:00SPEAKER_03: Um, I gotta ask you, you mentioned you don't miss a game.
- 25:02SPEAKER_03: So are you hopping on the bus, getting the back of somebody's car and going on the road trips, or are you just based at that wash park?
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: Uh well, we uh we've kind of stepped away from that because originally when it was just the D3 team when I started, if it was you know, kind of in the ballpark, we were going to Maryville, whatever we'd go.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: Now, usually, whenever the D3 team is is or if the D2 team is on the road, the D3 team is at home, and vice versa.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of easier to keep everything at Washington Park.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: That being said, for specialty events, we always make that you know trip 2020 or January 24th, the winter classic that they played against Slough outdoor at Senteen I Center where the Blues practice.
- 25:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: We all went there.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: Um against KU, we played two games my freshman sophomore year at Cable Dahmer Arena in Kansas City, where the Kansas City Mavericks play against them.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Since then, we've done we switched to a home and home with KU.
- 26:05SPEAKER_01: Um, and personally, I've kind of been like wanting more like kind of specialty events like that, because anything that they do, like I'm packing everybody up or driving there, like I'm not missing it.
- 26:16SPEAKER_03: It's awesome.
- 26:17SPEAKER_03: Well, talk, yeah.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: Talk talk a little bit about, you know, um, you started to touch on the the two teams, you know, they're they're like Superman and Clark Kent, they're never in the same place at the same time.
- 26:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, um, but how is it you're you're very bootstrapped, you've mentioned, and you're you're trying to build this, it feels like uh a grassroots groundswell or whatever you want to call it of hockey fans and also these you know announcers and broadcasters.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: So, what's the most difficult aspect of that production responsibility that you're that you're shouldering right now?
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: There's a lot.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: I think it's a lot of it is is certain aspects that are just gonna be out of your control, and that depends on what is going on today.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: You know, we are uh beholden to the whims of Washington Park Ice Arena, which is quite an old rink and not the most updated.
- 27:13SPEAKER_01: Um, and we love it, and I've spent what feels like half my life in that building.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: However, it's you know, oh, they don't they don't have an Ethernet port, or oh, the the the internet's just out today, or oh, this is happening, or this service you know is crashing, you just gotta figure it out.
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: Like, that is the one thing I'll say is my problem solving skills since joining Mizzou hockey to now have have gone through the roof.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: And anyone who is a loyal viewer knows, like, yeah, sometimes stuff happens, and I'm just like, you want to throw your hands up, but like ticking clock, you know, maybe there's a mic issue and the game's going on, you're fixing everything as fast as you possibly can because you gotta you gotta go.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: Like, you gotta get the people what they want, they want to see some hockey, and they're you know, it's the classic when everything runs smoothly, nobody says anything, nobody notices.
- 27:59SPEAKER_01: When everything's going wrong, everybody flips out.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: That's just the way it is.
- 28:03SPEAKER_01: Um, and I've I've made peace with that, but that's honestly probably one of the harder bits because just it there's a lot of weird stuff with with ACHA hockey and with the arenas we play in and with the setups we have where it's not the most ideal and we just kind of have to make do.
- 28:22SPEAKER_05: Oh, and you were talking a little bit earlier about the uh the different levels in the two teams.
- 28:28SPEAKER_05: Um not too long ago, Mizzou just had that D3 team.
- 28:33SPEAKER_05: Now they have D2.
- 28:35SPEAKER_05: What's it been like to watch the product on the ice change as the school moved from a D3 team to a D2 team at ACHA?
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: It was super interesting.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: So when I got there, it's just D3, right?
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: And it's a very good D3 team because they went to the the um they won the Macha, which is their the Macha Gold was their division, um, and they went to uh the regionals of St.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Louis and all that, and they were a high flying team.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: We were winning games 10 to 2, whatever.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Um, and you know, there were still close games, but there was that clear kind of gap where it's like going into a week, you're doing all your prep, and you're basically like, all right, so are we gonna win this week or not?
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, we're gonna win this week.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: Oh, we're gonna, you know, maybe not jump to D2.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: We kind of knew it's the same guys, right?
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: You just took the D3 team and we put them in D2, so it's that same roster.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: Um, but immediately like first game, I think we played D2.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: It was September 24.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Game was like one-nothing late in the third period.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: And I was like, okay, I've never seen this, like I've never seen the end of the first period, and one team has zero goals before, and now we're in the third, and it's really it's tighter, it's more competitive, and it's a lot cleaner.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: And I started to notice that more.
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: And I guess it's a good sign that now the D3 team, they don't really look as much like the D3 team years ago, which was kind of way more open.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: I don't want to say sloppy hockey, but not necessarily as structured.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: They look like a well-oiled machine.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: A lot of the teams we play look like a well-oiled machine.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: There's still a difference between D2 and D3.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: You can tell there's a little bit less scoring, a little less oomph.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Um, but that was a big adjustment at first, was like, as an announcer, you're greedy.
- 30:25SPEAKER_01: You want you want your big hype goal call, so you can like post it on Instagram.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: You get 10 tries a game one year, 10 different goal calls, and then the next year you're like, okay, you've got to lock in.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: Like there's only focus.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: And it's a lot easier to also call a game when there's a five-on-three every few minutes and there's you know, power points, whatever, but when two teams are just battling, you know, neutral zone, in, out, dump, and chase, whatever, and it's a bit of a chess match.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: It's harder to call that.
- 30:50SPEAKER_01: And so that was also an adjustment to make of like, all right, announcing is 90% not the fun the fun parts of hockey, right?
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's everything that goes into that.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: It's not all just breakaways and big saves and fights and goals, it's everything beyond that, battle along the boards, whatever.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: And it feels a lot more common, you know, once we made that jump from D3 to D2, and a lot like cleaner.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: Talk talk, you said something that caught my caught my ear there was the you know, your your goal, so to speak, is the actual goal calls you get, or the way to get your personality out there.
- 31:29SPEAKER_03: I mean, we hear a lot of guys in the NHL, um, you know, whether you're in Tampa or Colorado, they've got some pretty crazy um uh play-by-play guys.
- 31:39SPEAKER_03: What's your go-to?
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, what is it something that you've just kind of organically like created, or have you do you have like a catchphrase?
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, what's your what's your goal?
- 31:48SPEAKER_03: What's your goal call, man?
- 31:50SPEAKER_01: Well, that's see, because there are very different styles, and I always try to I really emphasize this to younger guys.
- 31:56SPEAKER_01: Like, don't try to imitate me or imitate, just do what you want to do.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: And we have some guys that are very measured, you know, the and he scores, and you just keep your tone and you're rolling in and you do that right, and it sounds good.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: I am more bombastic leaning, especially because you've seen our setup, we're kind of surrounded by the fans, and like the crowd's screaming, you're not in a soundproof booth, you gotta yell over them sometimes, and and really you're in the crowd with that energy.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: So I'm a little I'm a little jokey.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: I'll say I'm a little jokey too.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: When when something funny happens, you know, you you crack a joke and and whatnot.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: But people like ask me, what what announcer are you most similar to?
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, I don't know, because I just do me, which I guess is a it's a good thing or a bad thing.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: I guess the the viewers at home will have to decide that.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: But if you go on our YouTube page, you can see the highlights um from last week's games that were published, and you can hear all the goal calls in there.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: Um if you if you want a kind of an example, but it's pretty, you know, scream until your vocal cords hurt when there's when there's a goal.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: Like feel the energy that the fans are feeling, you know.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: Um I'm trying to think of a catchphrase.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: I have to.
- 33:10SPEAKER_03: Now you've said it, let's find it.
- 33:12SPEAKER_03: So I'm on the Mizzou, I'm on the Mizzou hockey homepage.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: And uh let's see, where do I want to go?
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: I want to go to social media for D2, Instagram.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: I think they posted them on Instagram or YouTube page.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: Our YouTube page has your YouTube page?
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: Well, I just happen to be a YouTube uh you need to be following our YouTube uh channel, by the way.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: We'll follow you back.
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: Of course.
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: All right, let's take a look here.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: Let's see.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: Uh so we've got um game.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: If you go to the videos, was the last game I called.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: All right, so let's let me search it here.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: What's it so what's it called?
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: What game was it?
- 33:50SPEAKER_01: If you just go to the YouTube page and hit videos, it'll be like the second most recent video.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: All right, let's see.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: On the zoo hockey page.
- 33:58SPEAKER_05: I I I love how you handle it, Owen.
- 34:01SPEAKER_05: You do you.
- 34:02SPEAKER_05: Don't try to be like anybody else.
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: All right, let's let's let's let's do it now.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: Let's do it for the fans.
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: Let's do it for the fans.
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: We're gonna share with audio as well.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: Alright, so here we are.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: We're gonna add it to the stage.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: Skip a little into a goal call, maybe.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: All right, where we go, where we go.
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: The pink at the rink, October 16th.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: Alright, let's let's let's hear it.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Illinois scored the first two goals of that game, and it was 2-0, so I'd skip a little in until you get some, you know, some some exciting Mizzou action.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: Working his body in there really.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, see Illinois goal.
- 34:42SPEAKER_01: They just there we go.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: And then we boom, tied it like that.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love your man voice, that's great.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: There's a turnover right in front of the net of Christopher, but calm things down.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, here they score it.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: That same group out.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: It's Lukey with DeGroat and Bramstead.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: Shot and he scores!
- 35:10unknown: Dylan Lukey knocks off the water bottle with an absolute snipe.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 35:18SPEAKER_02: And it's a guy we know.
- 35:20SPEAKER_02: It's a kid we know.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: What a flame.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: I love those scores.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, I love it.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: Just organic.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: Like he scores.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: Love it.
- 35:30SPEAKER_05: I can I can hear the energy in your voice, Owen.
- 35:34SPEAKER_05: That is uh that's great.
- 35:36SPEAKER_05: You're you're making it fun uh as a listener.
- 35:38SPEAKER_05: I appreciate it.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: Well, and the nice thing too is Washington Park's not super far away from campus.
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: Um, I can tell you back in the 90s, uh, I would drive almost 50 minutes from campus to the rink of Fair State.
- 35:55SPEAKER_05: Here comes the here comes the story.
- 35:58SPEAKER_05: Oh, walk uphill both ways again.
- 36:00SPEAKER_03: Both ways, it was terrible.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: Like nobody was watching, except for the wives of the 30-year-olds from the OHL.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: Oh man, so so exciting, man.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: So cool.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: What do you um I mean what in the in in your three and a half years of being a student at Mizzou and being a part of this, um, obviously going to the getting the D2 team, what has the fandom been like?
- 36:27SPEAKER_03: What has that, you know, what has that game day experience been like?
- 36:31SPEAKER_03: How has it improved since you started?
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: It's improved massively, and that's obviously like that's not on me.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: The product is great.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: I always say there's only so much your social media and all that, and your broadcast can juzge up like a bad product, but the product on the ice is really good, and the team is good, they win.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: The social media people that we have are fantastic.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: Our social media is like, I would almost say, second to none in our CHA space.
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: Um, and our game people, uh Robert, who's our PA announcer, does a lot of you know the in arena, the lights and all that.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: It's a whole group effort.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: But I think when I got there, like there was there were fans, right?
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: And and especially for big high-profile games, they would do some stuff.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: I don't remember exactly how this came about, but for Arkansas, who's our rival, they're in our division.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Um, and unlike football, it's a real rivalry, it's not forced.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: They do not like each other in Arkansas.
- 37:24SPEAKER_01: They they the hockey teams are not not fans of each other.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: Um, but those games were packed because they were busting people in from uh Columbia to the rink, which I mean that's the big hurdle, right?
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: For us has always been students, many of whom may not even have a car, are not, even though 30-minute drive isn't the worst in the world, yeah, aren't willing to make that.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: But in the last few years, like I people are showing up, and the atmosphere is really good.
- 37:55SPEAKER_01: It it we have like alcohol sales now and like a little table, and we have uh the hot box cookie monster, like which is a sponsorship, but it's a mascot that just kind of runs around and it's it's funny, and there's a lot more kids there, even just like people who maybe were at the rink for their practice, younger won't say, Hey, mom, dad, can we stick around?
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: Like, look at them.
- 38:21SPEAKER_01: This is cool.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: And a lot more fans are coming in.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: I hear, you know, I overhear people talking all the time, like, oh, this is their first Mizzo hockey game, like they've really been wanting to go to one.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: And I think that's the role the broadcast does play because you're the way I see it, you're not gonna convince somebody who's never been to a Mizzou hockey game to drive 30 minutes to Jefferson City on a Saturday night to watch a product they don't know.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: And so getting to, you know, or our social media too is great about that.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: You pump it out for free to as many people as you can, get all the eyeballs on it, and they say, Oh, this looks kind of good.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: I want to, I gotta get there for one of those games.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: And then once they show up in person and they see the guys flying down the ice and hitting and beating the crap out of each other, then the hooks are in them and you've got a fan, and you you're you've won.
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: Love it, I love it.
- 39:07SPEAKER_03: Well, hey, I I gotta I've got a proposition for you.
- 39:10SPEAKER_03: I just subscribed the two mini men on the mic channel to the Mizoo channel.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: I'm putting our YouTube uh feed in the in the chat here over to your right.
- 39:18SPEAKER_03: So you go so go subscribe and get your social media guys to to don't even worry about it.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: I got you.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: I got you.
- 39:24SPEAKER_03: I love it, love it, love it, love it.
- 39:26SPEAKER_05: But I mean, you're you're doing fantastic things at Mizzou, and I couldn't uh echo it more.
- 39:33SPEAKER_05: Uh coach, I've seen little kids in the warm-up room uh with sharpties going up to the players, trying to get autographs.
- 39:43SPEAKER_05: It's uh it's everything hockey should be.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: So uh Mizoo's done a great job of building a nice community around their ACHA hockey programs.
- 39:53SPEAKER_05: And Owen, continue what you're doing.
- 39:56SPEAKER_05: UBU, we love listening to you.
- 39:58SPEAKER_05: And uh thanks for joining us today on the show.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 40:02SPEAKER_01: Thank you guys so much.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: You at home over the holiday.
- 40:06SPEAKER_01: Absolutely do it.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: Thank you guys so much.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: This has been awesome.
- 40:11SPEAKER_03: Like, follow, subscribe, and make sure you look us up when you get when you're back in town in the loo, all right?
- 40:16SPEAKER_03: Of course.
- 40:20SPEAKER_05: Catch you later.
- 40:23SPEAKER_05: I mean, how cool is that?
- 40:24SPEAKER_05: The guy's making bacon hockey, and he even threw at the juju.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: I I was gonna say he used the juju.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: I was like, ah, all right, all right.
- 40:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's a technical term.
- 40:36SPEAKER_03: That's a technical term.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think it's I think it's super, super cool.
- 40:39SPEAKER_03: I think you know, one of the things that um you know we talk about is there's a place for everybody if you want to continue to play.
- 40:47SPEAKER_03: And you know, there's there are uh you know no, there's no one path.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: And the fact that Mizzou has gone from really a kind of a uh a social club, you know, a decade ago, when it, I mean, for lack of a better term, to this very highly competitive, um, attracting really top-level talent on both of those teams.
- 41:11SPEAKER_03: And you got a guy who really doesn't have a connection to hockey until he got to Mizzou, and all of a sudden he's like, Yeah, that's what I want to do.
- 41:17SPEAKER_03: I want to, I want to watch, broadcast, and and and be a part of this culture.
- 41:22SPEAKER_03: I think it's so cool.
- 41:23SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, I gotta believe that um, you know, we're gonna be talking about Mizzou in the next maybe five to 10 10 years of do they look at exploring a Division I program?
- 41:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, Oklahoma State, which is you know a former like Big 12 compadre of Mizzou back in the day is is about to is about to go D1 in hockey, uh, I think in two years.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: Um, Maryville here locally, Lindenwood here locally.
- 41:54SPEAKER_03: Um, so you know uh you'd be surprised what could happen if a guy who's an alumni and a big hockey supporter all of a sudden or gal um decides to to help you know spear it out spearhead an effort to build a rink.
- 42:10SPEAKER_05: Well, I know you'll appreciate this.
- 42:12SPEAKER_05: Um heard in the stands that the last game I attended uh was a little thin Lizzie.
- 42:19SPEAKER_03: Oh, nice.
- 42:20SPEAKER_03: Nice, nice, nice.
- 42:21SPEAKER_03: Which uh not not not the boys are back in town, right?
- 42:25SPEAKER_03: A little jailbreak, maybe.
- 42:27SPEAKER_03: Oh boys are back in town.
- 42:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, you know, especially after an out-of-town weekend, you you you you serve it up.
- 42:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, thin Lizzie, whiskey in a jar, um, boys are back in town.
- 42:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, maybe a little wild one, um, superstar.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, we could sit here and we can like we can wax poetic about the Phil, Phil Lionot, and his and his, you know, his merry band of Irishmen.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, do you know YouTube still says they're the greatest Irish band of all time?
- 43:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, really?
- 43:02SPEAKER_03: You two.
- 43:03SPEAKER_03: YouTube is like YouTube's like, who's the best Irish band of all time?
- 43:06SPEAKER_03: Not even Bat Nilish, Tin Lizzie.
- 43:10SPEAKER_05: Well, I can't wait to see where Owen goes with this because I have a feeling that uh we may be talking to him again and he may be climbing the ranks of the uh uh organized uh next stages of youth hockey, whether it's the wolves or whether it's the OHL or the Knoll or maybe even uh hockey TV AHL hockey TV.
- 43:36SPEAKER_05: So good for him.
- 43:37SPEAKER_05: Good for him.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think it's cool.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: And I I I love um you know, we see this a lot with with parents of hockey players.
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: They be you know, they don't have a lot of history with the sport growing up, you know, many of them don't know how to skate, and yet they get exposed to it, and all of a sudden it's like you know, they're more fervent fans than guys.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Who've been playing and been around the sport for uh for 40 plus years.
- 44:03SPEAKER_03: That's Furbid, by the way.
- 44:04SPEAKER_03: Furvent looking up.
- 44:06SPEAKER_03: Furbage.
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: Furbage.
- 44:08SPEAKER_03: Furbage with the V.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: And so to see, you know, my hopes are that someday we can make that out of Grant.
- 44:18SPEAKER_03: We have a couple bills to pay here.
- 44:19SPEAKER_03: We'll be back to wax poetic about a lot of the goings-on in hockey, both at the professional level and below.
- 44:26SPEAKER_03: So don't go anywhere you listen to Too Many Men on the Mic with Coach Jared and Coach Drew.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: We'll be right back.
- 44:32SPEAKER_05: We're excited to officially welcome Afterlight Recovery Company as a partner of Too Many Men on the Mike.
- 44:39SPEAKER_05: They just launched last week, and we wanted to be the first to let you know.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: This partnership felt like a natural fit right from the start because Afterlight was built by a former hockey player who understands the hockey lifestyle firsthand.
- 44:55SPEAKER_05: It's for the parents who finally get back to the hotel after the last game, gather in the lobby for a few post-game beverages, stay up a little later than planned, and then somehow have to be back at the rink first thing the next morning for an early game.
- 45:10SPEAKER_05: It's for the beer league guys and gals who finish a late game, stick around for a couple on the parking lot or at the bar, and still have work family or another skate waiting for them the next day.
- 45:23SPEAKER_05: That's where afterlife fits in.
- 45:25SPEAKER_05: Midnight Berry is caffeine-free and built for evening hydration and targeted recovery support.
- 45:31SPEAKER_05: Tropical sunshine brings hydration recovery support and 100 milligrams of caffeine for the next morning when the alarm comes way too early.
- 45:41SPEAKER_05: Both formulas are sugar-free, third-party tested, and go beyond basic electrolytes with ingredients including DHM, NAC, amino acids, electrolytes, and milk thistle.
- 45:53SPEAKER_05: And because they come in individual stick packs, they're easy to throw in the hockey bag, suitcase, glove box, or tournament weekend cooler.
- 46:01SPEAKER_05: Whether it's a hotel lobby after a long tournament day, Beer League on a Tuesday night, or another 8 a.m.
- 46:08SPEAKER_05: puck drop the next morning, Afterlight was made for the nights that don't always end when the game does.
- 46:14SPEAKER_05: And as part of the partnership, the Too Many Men community gets 20% off their first Afterlight order.
- 46:21SPEAKER_05: Check the final slide for the exclusive discount code, then head to afterlightrecovery.co to try it for yourself.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: Welcome to the team, Afterlight.
- 46:32SPEAKER_05: Recover Brighter.
- 46:41SPEAKER_05: Alright, we're back.
- 46:44SPEAKER_05: Man, I uh I like talking with Owen.
- 46:47SPEAKER_05: I like hearing uh I like hearing the energy in his voice when he makes these calls.
- 46:52SPEAKER_05: I feel like you do that at your house when you're watching Detroit Red Wings games.
- 46:56SPEAKER_05: Do you do that?
- 46:58SPEAKER_03: Um, I might get uh a little excited.
- 47:01SPEAKER_03: My wife uh she doesn't like when I have sharp objects or glasses full of uh of wine um in the middle of any sporting event.
- 47:10SPEAKER_03: It's becoming that way for Tennessee football now as well.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: Um it's funny how when you actually make a real investment, you tend to get an emotional investment as well.
- 47:22SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 47:25SPEAKER_05: Um well, uh a fun story uh or a relevant story and a fun story, always because we're talking about hockey.
- 47:33SPEAKER_05: But uh it made me think about Owen and how Washington Parks, a little bit of a drive away from University of Missouri.
- 47:43SPEAKER_05: I don't know, it's like 30, 35 minutes, I think the last time that I did it.
- 47:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, but a a relevant story to that is there was a reporting out of Northeastern University's hockey program, and co-captain uh Joaquin Lamey, Lamey, uh talked about how he's got a young team without its former home rink and treating travel to practice as an opportunity to build chemistry.
- 48:16SPEAKER_05: So the very first thing that comes to my mind, and I want to hear what you have to say about this.
- 48:21SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna go back to Thin Lizzie.
- 48:23SPEAKER_05: Okay, this is an opportunity when you have your teammates in the car because you're probably carpooling, you're riding together uh to a rink that's maybe a little bit far away.
- 48:33SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, I would be laying my thin Lizzie knowledge down on my teammates, walking through the catalog, or uh, and that's something that's totally non-hockey related.
- 48:47SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, what would you be doing in a ride uh in your car with your teammates to a rink that's far away?
- 48:54SPEAKER_05: Something that can build chemistry.
- 48:57SPEAKER_03: Well, I mean, the first thing that comes to mind is you start you start building you know super teams, and you you know, having the conversation of, all right, you know, who's your first round draft choice?
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: Who's the first guy you pick, you know, and who's the you know, and I always have this argument with my boys, and they they think I'm crazy.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: I don't and again, this is kind of like a Blake Warren take, you know, how Blake Warren doesn't think that Christmas Vacation is a really good movie.
- 49:24SPEAKER_03: Um I don't think Patrick Kane or Mike Madono or Pat Lafontaine are the greatest American-born hockey players of all time.
- 49:33SPEAKER_03: None of them.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: And I will I will say this till I'm blue in the face to anyone that'll listen.
- 49:39SPEAKER_03: Chris Chelios is the greatest American-born hockey player of all time, in my opinion.
- 49:44SPEAKER_03: You've got a guy who's won three Stanley Cups.
- 49:48SPEAKER_03: He was a Norris trophy winner.
- 49:51SPEAKER_03: I believe he won the Norris.
- 49:57SPEAKER_03: Um he had like one of the biggest gaps between winning the Norris when he won.
- 50:02SPEAKER_03: I think he won it with Montreal, and then he won it later on with Chicago.
- 50:06SPEAKER_05: 86 Montreal, yep.
- 50:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:09SPEAKER_03: Um he has the this is not unless it's changed here recently, most playoff games ever played.
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: Full stop.
- 50:19SPEAKER_03: No, no qualifier, most playoff games ever played.
- 50:23SPEAKER_03: And so, and I think to myself, you know, when when when I was growing up and I absolutely hated Chris Chelios, hated him.
- 50:32SPEAKER_03: Like he was so good, but just nasty, you know, tough-nosed player.
- 50:37SPEAKER_03: Um, and then when he became a Red Wing, I was like, this is the best thing ever.
- 50:44SPEAKER_05: Like having Claude Lemieux on your team.
- 50:46SPEAKER_03: Well, Claude Lemieux, Brady Kachuk, uh, you know, um Marshan, insert any heel uh in the history of the game.
- 50:56SPEAKER_03: You want him on your team.
- 50:57SPEAKER_03: And so I would be doing that with teammates.
- 51:00SPEAKER_03: I'd be like saying, okay, like best right wing of all time when they're going off and they're talking about all these guys.
- 51:05SPEAKER_03: I would say Mike Bossy.
- 51:06SPEAKER_03: And they'd be like, I didn't even think about it.
- 51:10SPEAKER_03: That's what's so cool about any sport, really, because you have these great debates and you have these great um discussions.
- 51:17SPEAKER_03: Like my boys always, and I'm sure Owen and Miles in the exact same way.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: When I try to tell them that there's not a player alive playing at NHL who's as good as Mary Lamie, they just look at me like, okay, whatever.
- 51:29SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, yo, you try wearing leather gloves halfway up your arm and playing with a wood stick and then come talk to me.
- 51:34SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, that that'd be I think that's a great way to bond.
- 51:39SPEAKER_03: And it's it it gets you off your phone.
- 51:41SPEAKER_03: You know, my hopes are is that these guys, as they're driving, and I think it's let's set the record, let's set the what's going on at Northeastern.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: They had a hundred and fifty hundred and five hundred and fifteen-year-old arena that they played out of calling.
- 51:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Matthews Arena.
- 52:00SPEAKER_03: And it was basically sinking, and so they had to tear it down.
- 52:06SPEAKER_03: They had to tear it down.
- 52:08SPEAKER_03: Um, and unfortunately, this is where we need Jeff Gross back on to talk about how to build a rink.
- 52:12SPEAKER_03: Um, Matthews Arena, 115-year-old arena, they had to tear it down.
- 52:17SPEAKER_03: Um, as they're building the new rink, they find asbestos in the soil.
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: So everything is on hold right now.
- 52:24SPEAKER_03: So these guys, you know, their fans are having to travel, they're traveling, and this is a D1 program.
- 52:31SPEAKER_03: So I mean, I I know it's tough for ACHA.
- 52:34SPEAKER_03: ACHA, you're still paying to play hockey, right?
- 52:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's great hockey, but a D1 team, this is adversity.
- 52:41SPEAKER_03: This, but you know, you think about this happened to the the coyotes a few years ago at the uh you playing at the ASU.
- 52:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and probably not the best uh ice times either.
- 52:54SPEAKER_05: So not only are you driving far, you're frustrated, or you're trying not to get frustrated, you're playing uh or practicing potentially at some strange times, and so uh you gotta get creative.
- 53:09SPEAKER_05: And so building super teams, going through the thin lazy catalog, trying to find uh lightness in uh your circumstances.
- 53:20SPEAKER_05: Uh that sounds like what the Northeastern hockey team is doing right now.
- 53:24SPEAKER_05: And you know, we got mid-states hockey players uh that are gonna play hockey uh starting this weekend, uh at least on the on the hockey night.
- 53:34SPEAKER_05: And we got some 1010 games, uh 1010 at night games, and so uh not the most desirable time that's out there, and so those teams are gonna have to find creative ways to keep it light and fun.
- 53:50SPEAKER_05: And uh I I'll be interested to hear what Blake and Ethan uh hear from our uh player interviews and see what some of those kids have to say about what do they do when they're getting ready for a 1010 hockey game to keep them dialed in.
- 54:06SPEAKER_03: Well, I I think too, um, you know, this is also affecting the women's team at at North Northeastern.
- 54:13SPEAKER_03: You know, they're they're making some trips into Boston.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: Now, now they're lucky that they play in a part of the country that is pretty densely populated.
- 54:22SPEAKER_03: You've got Boston College, UMass, um, you know, uh, you know, uh Boston University.
- 54:29SPEAKER_03: So you've got some areas that you can drive to, but you know, you know this.
- 54:34SPEAKER_03: If you're um I'll I'll equate it to this.
- 54:38SPEAKER_03: Remember when we would trade ice or we would have we would we would be short of ice and we'd have to drive out to Pacific to have a practice?
- 54:44SPEAKER_03: Uh you know how how excited the kids were to drive out to Pacific, and even more excited the parents were.
- 54:50SPEAKER_03: Um you mentioned mid-states.
- 54:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's a lot of constraints on on our mid-states teams across the board because we are, you know, it's not like you have a home rink.
- 55:01SPEAKER_03: Uh you're typically sharing ice or sharing, you know, uh ice times with uh other clubs.
- 55:09SPEAKER_03: Um you're competing with your players playing for club teams and your high school team.
- 55:16SPEAKER_03: And so I think as a coach specifically, you know, you've got to figure out how to um attack your practices and and really make the most out of it.
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: And um it's not an ideal situation in a lot of a lot of a lot of uh a lot of times.
- 55:33SPEAKER_03: But just think about if you had to worry about attendance and drive 45 to 60 minutes away just to get to your rink.
- 55:42SPEAKER_03: Um, but I think adversity is what makes teams better.
- 55:46SPEAKER_03: It's what make and I think adversity makes coaches better too.
- 55:50SPEAKER_03: I think that's a big deal that um you know there's always somebody else who has it worse.
- 55:58SPEAKER_03: You know, there really is.
- 55:59SPEAKER_03: And I I just feel like um whether you're coaching hockey, whether you're running a business, whether you're working with the relationships of your friends and family, adversity is something that I think creates opportunities.
- 56:14SPEAKER_03: And I love how you talk about, and I love how Joaquin LeMay talks about in this article, about how, okay, we've got an hour of windshield time with these younger players who we've got to teach how to be D1 hockey players at North Northeastern University.
- 56:31SPEAKER_03: Let's build this camaraderie, let's build this family and use this as an opportunity, not as um not as just this like, oh, woe is me.
- 56:41SPEAKER_03: And I think that's important in life.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: I think it's a great life lesson that hockey can help teach those guys and all of us.
- 56:47SPEAKER_05: Well, we got some adversity out of Wisconsin too.
- 56:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, that's another great um great segue here.
- 56:56SPEAKER_03: You know, we talk about, and this is great because we have had conversations with, you know, whether it's Bob Mancini, uh, Chris Durso, any number of the directors of USA hockey, and we talk about that developmental, you know, path.
- 57:13SPEAKER_03: And you know, whether you're you're trying to develop from a C level player to a B level player, or from a third liner to a first liner, um there is a level of you get to this point where you're playing today and you're like, hey, I need a better challenge.
- 57:34SPEAKER_03: And you could be a five-year-old, uh you could be a 12-year-old who's who's playing on one team and you got you got placed on a team in in August, and by the time December rolls around, you've developed and you're you're exceeding the level that you're at, which by the way is what we all hope for.
- 57:52SPEAKER_03: Well, then when you make that jump to the next level, and this was something that I thought was pretty interesting, all of a sudden, ooh, it's a little bit more difficult.
- 58:02SPEAKER_03: My mindset has to change.
- 58:04SPEAKER_03: Um, we talk about adversity, and I think that the article that that you're referencing um from the hockey news is is they had an interview with uh Zach Wooten, who's currently playing at University of Wisconsin.
- 58:17SPEAKER_03: And you know, Wisconsin has a great um developmental program, both on the club side and in their high school side, and they matriculate a lot of kids through their high school program into That's a big word.
- 58:30SPEAKER_03: Matriculate, there you go.
- 58:31SPEAKER_03: We're talking, we're talking college.
- 58:34SPEAKER_03: Um and what he made the comment of is like, yeah, it was hard.
- 58:38SPEAKER_03: It was I was going from being the top you know producer on my team, and I got noticed, which is the goal.
- 58:45SPEAKER_03: And my development put me in a situation where I was able to move into another strata of competition, and all of a sudden I went from being a top line you know point producer and performer to I'm struggling to develop here, and I'm going maybe down to the third line or maybe even the fourth line.
- 59:05SPEAKER_03: And he talks about perseverance.
- 59:08SPEAKER_03: And I think you know, no two players, no two kids are alike.
- 59:17SPEAKER_03: But what you I tend to see with successful people in general is you get that initial shock of of whether it's um, oh, I wasn't expecting this, or I I can't do the things as easily as I used to be able to, or gosh, I remember, you know, I I was closing business when I was a salesperson at this place, it's so easy, and now I've come here with this promotion, and all of a sudden it's a little harder.
- 59:44SPEAKER_03: And you, you know, I always tell people, okay, you've got 12 hours to get over it, and you've got to figure out a plan to how are you going to get better, or what is it that you want?
- 59:55SPEAKER_03: And I think that his article really speaks to that.
- 59:57SPEAKER_03: I think it's a good lesson for young kids and parents that like the goal is to get to that next level where it's hard or a little harder, more difficult, and more challenging.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_05: Um, yeah, you're not gonna dominate at every level while you're on the development path.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_05: Or it's I shouldn't say that it's unusual uh for that to happen.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_05: And so dealing with again adversity, and I like your 12-hour rule.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_05: Uh have your moment and then uh sleep on it and get up and uh and then move forward.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_05: And so you're moving forward with accepting your new reality, being on this journey, developing as a hockey player, um, and uh and continuing on, or making a decision that you know this isn't this isn't it.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_05: But you're right, it's um you know, it's it's it's unusual for a player to uh continue to be at that level the whole time.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_05: Guess what?
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_05: You made it to the next level, and guess what?
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_05: It's hard.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_03: Well, and I look at this again, I'm gonna bring it back to high school hockey.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, if you are a freshman at the University of Wisconsin, or if you are a freshman at Ledoux or Desmet or Shamanade, you know, you may be the top producer on your club team.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_03: But you are now stepping into uh an environment where there are kids who have one, two, three more years of development ahead of you.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_03: And so there's like this, you know, when you look at the composite of these kids, it's like, yeah, you might be a triple A or a Central States or a double A player as a freshman, and you're playing against uh a single A player as a senior, but that senior has also, you know, three years of physical and mental development that kind of offsets that.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_03: And all of a sudden it's like, well, I used to be able to come off the off the wall and go right through the middle, and I can't do that anymore.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_03: And uh I'll never forget, I was coaching um with our friend Monty Sandler.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_03: Uh Monty and I were coaching this team, and we it was a it was a mixture of minors and majors at the Bannom level.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_03: And you know, Bannum, Bannham is also one of those those bellwether years where it's like uh you're going from Pee-Wee where you've got a little bit of body contact, but for the most part, you're you've got some pretty clear lanes up and down the ice to it doesn't work that way anymore.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_03: And those kids who are a year older, like they know.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_03: And I remember we were coaching this young guy, uh, he was a he was a minor, and he in practice every day, he would come off the wall, come off the wall and go straight down in the middle.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_03: And Monty and I were looking at each other, going, This kid's gonna get killed.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_03: He's gonna get killed.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_03: And so we even kind of surprise him in practice.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_03: And and like Scott Stevens, I read that Scott Stevens used to do this to rookies.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_03: He's like, I got you, and they're like, No way, man.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_03: He's like, I would have killed you.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_03: So we were trying to do that to him, and first thing out of his mouth, no way, man.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_03: I'd you would never you'd never touch me.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_03: First game in the offensive zone, makes a good play to get the puck you know on the half wall, tries to come straight off the half wall with the puck on his stick, head, head not looking anywhere.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_03: Boom, boom, learned.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_03: But he's now playing uh Central States, and he's uh he's competing for varsity spots at his high school.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_03: He goes to Salu.
- 1:03:31SPEAKER_03: So again, sometimes it's like that you've gotta learn like in the actual experience, um, and persevere.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_03: And some kids don't, and that's okay too.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_03: Like maybe the level you were at was the level you should be at to have the most maximum level of enjoyment.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_03: Um but I I just I love those stories because it's like here's a kid that could Zach Wooten could be in the NHL, certainly gonna probably get paid to play hockey somewhere at some point.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_03: He's a very talented player, but just that he's gone through the same thing, and he's like, Oh my gosh, this is harder than I thought.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_03: You think about Gavin McKinnon, Gavin McKinnon when he first came up for Toronto, or even Shane Wright, you know, Shane Wright, who was supposedly supposed to be the number one overall, and then Slavkowski got drafted number one overall.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_03: He went fourth to Seattle.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_03: They set him down.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_03: He had to learn how to play professional hockey.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_03: I thought that that that's those just he's he's a really good player, he's gonna probably be in the league for 10 years.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_03: That's a success.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_03: I'll take it.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_03: What are your thoughts?
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_05: No, I uh look, I uh I I I agree.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_05: Uh just because you got there doesn't mean necessarily you're ready.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_05: And I think the Shane Wright example is a really good one.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_05: You know, they looked at him and they said, Nope, not ready yet.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_05: Moved him down.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, you and I have seen many kids that want to come through the neutral zone, head turned around, head down, and we know it's a train wreck.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_05: And so uh it's it is that challenge, and it's that benefit that those players that are one, two, and three years older have of having the experience.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_05: And uh and then those kids step into that environment, and it's just a it's just a different game uh with high school.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_05: And so I can't wait to see the season kick off.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_05: I'm really looking forward to hearing Ethan and Blake.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_05: I know they'll bring their personalities to these interviews, and uh uh I think we're gonna have some great content uh uh for future episodes.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_05: So looking forward to hearing the kids.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_03: Well, since we were talking about windshield time and what what I would do in the car with my teammates, what would you do in the car with your teammates?
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_03: Like what would you be what would you be doing?
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, I tip my hand.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_05: Little bit on Thin Lizzie.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_05: Um but then a common one I play with my kids, and I think you could do this with hockey teams too, is the would you game?
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_05: Uh would you?
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_05: So a good would you if you're a St.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_05: Louis Blues fan this year, would you keep Jordan Bennington uh for the rest of the season?
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_05: Uh uh or would you deal him now?
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_05: Or do you think Jordan Bennington is gonna get dealt at the trade deadline?
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_05: And if you were gonna deal him, who would you deal him for?
- 1:06:35SPEAKER_05: So uh uh Would you is a good game?
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_05: Uh Owen, way back in the day when he was younger, used to sit in the back seat and chime to me.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_05: Uh at just various times he would say, Dad, would you rather have a Ferrari or a Lamborghini?
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_05: Would you rather have a Bugatti or a Jaguar?
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_05: That kind of stuff.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_05: So I mean, there is there's no wrong answer here.
- 1:06:59SPEAKER_05: You got to figure out how to make it fun.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_02: Um and let's play that game.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_02: Would you get rid of Bennington?
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_05: Yes, I would because I thought we should have gotten rid of him last year.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_05: The problem we have is that we don't have a third goalie.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_05: So unfortunately, uh, we're in a situation where we got to keep Bennington for the rest of the year.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_05: And I love Jordan Bennington.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_05: I uh the guy got us a Stanley Cup, he is a world-class goaltender.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_05: The reality is he's in the last year of his contract and he doesn't have a deal now, and somebody is going to uh make uh uh the blues organization probably a pretty good offer, and I think the blues should listen to it, and uh and Hofer's got some really good numbers.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, I think lots of smart hockey people think that he's got better numbers than Bennington.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_05: And so as an organization, I think you have to listen to those things and say, are you going to be able to get uh something for your organization that could help out long term uh by making some kind of deal?
- 1:08:10SPEAKER_05: So it'll be interesting to see.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_05: But uh I like Jordan Bennington.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_05: I think he's here till the trade deadline, and then as the trade deadline approaches, I think he's uh I think he's destined to go somewhere else.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_05: You can't trade him in your conference, though.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_05: Don't send him to Edmonton.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_05: I know everybody wants him to go to Edmonton, um, but no.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_05: Uh Edmonton is is not a destination.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_05: If you're gonna deal him, you got to deal him east, you got to deal him out of your conference because uh you can get assets for your organization um and trade the player, but you don't want to trade him, uh, certainly to somebody in your division.
- 1:08:50SPEAKER_05: And I would argue you definitely don't want to trade him in the conference either.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_05: So send them east, uh, send them to the other side, and uh, but I think he's gonna go to another another organization.
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_03: I think he's gotta go to the Rangers.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_03: Shisturkin and Corpusalo are both hurt.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_03: Shisturkin's out for the year.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_03: Um, Bennington has something Shisturkin does, and he's got a Stanley Cup.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_03: And um I think I think he's the type of player who if he gets dealt is going to have such a incredible chip on his shoulder that the team that gets him is going to benefit from that.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_03: That's that's one of those situations where I may say, yeah, the goalie can get you, he can get you three or four games post-trade deadline because of that mentality.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and and guess how old he is?
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_05: He's about the same age as Connor Helleback.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_05: So here we are back to where we started.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_05: We're doing a big loop and saying uh 32, 33-year-old guy.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_05: Why would you want a guy like that?
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_05: He's won a Stanley Cup, he's gonna have a chip on his shoulder, and they think they can get some more ears out of him.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_05: And you know what?
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_05: They're probably right.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_05: I mean, these guys are pros for a reason, they're in great shape as long as they're taking care of their body.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_05: I mean, last time I looked, Jordan Bennington hasn't had any serious injuries, knock on wood.
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_05: So uh yeah, I I I understand the risk.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_05: Um, but we were talking about fun just a second ago, and so I got an idea for drill draw.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_05: And so I I've got a drill that we could draw up.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_05: This is gonna be a different drill, uh, but it's in the aspect of keeping things light and keeping things fun.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_05: So that's one idea.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_05: Uh so your choice, would you like to do that one?
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_05: Uh that's just more straight ahead, useful for a hockey team today.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_05: But it's really designed to keep uh some fun and levity on the ice.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_05: Or plan B, would you like to draw up a drill that Grant and Owen can do on the ice?
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_05: When Owen's in town, well, it sounds like this will maybe back out on skates.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_03: I I I I think that we I think if we get both of those guys ever on the ice, we basically put them in a bear pit.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_03: Oh, I agree.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_03: Bear pit.
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_03: Put them in a bear pit.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_03: Um, let's but before we do the drill draw, I love your would you.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_03: Um so let's go.
- 1:11:25SPEAKER_03: If if you were drafting a team, and let's I like to put constraints on it.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_03: You needed to have a player from when you were younger to score one goal, to score one goal in a sudden death overtime, like to win the Stanley Cup.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_03: Who you taking?
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_05: Ooh, sudden death overtime to win the Stanley Cup from our childhood.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_03: So, you know, we're both relatively, you know, some of us are older than others, but we're both relatively like I would say 82 to 92 was is kind of our window.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_03: Um, who you taking?
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_03: Who's your guy?
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_05: So this is probably gonna come as a surprise to you.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_05: I am not going to pick a St.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_05: Louis blue.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_03: Really?
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_03: There'd be one I would pick if I was gonna pick one.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, okay.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_05: Not a St.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_05: Louis Blue.
- 1:12:21SPEAKER_05: One of my favorite players to watch as a kid growing up, who I think is vastly underrated, is Brian Trashier.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_05: Oh, watching him, and so uh, you know, he won four Stanley Cups.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_05: The last scene that won four in a row, it just goes to show you how hard it is to win.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_05: But I loved watching him on the ice, and so for me, as growing up as a kid, I'm gonna say it was Brian Traceer.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_03: You know, he is that so there's a there's a through line of Trotchier and Iserman wore 19 because of Trotchier, and Iserman was Sidney Crosby's favorite player, so like that style of of center who who plays who I mean Tracce was amazing.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_03: Um he was, and a lot of people forget about it that that Mario's early cups he was on the team, yeah.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_03: He's on that team, so was Joey Mullen, so was Ronnie Francis.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_03: Um yeah, I I mean it it's hard to debate Brian Tracey.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_03: I I'm probably gonna go and I can't believe I'm saying this, but Dennis Savard.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_03: A black hawk.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_03: I know a Red Wing and a Blues guy here on the show, and I'm going Denis Savard.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_03: Um but the Dennis, I mean the goals that that guy could score, um, and just his ability to just get up and down the ice.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, he won a cup with Montreal um in 90 93.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_03: Um, but I would say I would say Denny Savard would be one of those guys that'd be like, yeah, I want the puck on that guy's stick late in the game.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then you know, the other the other guy that people don't really think a lot about, um, but if I'm thinking of an overtime game in the playoffs, that type of player, Cam Neely.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_05: I mean, he was yeah, I mean, he he he was the uh he was the prototypical, he he became the example of the power uh power winger.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_03: Him and like Tim Kerr, and um, you know, you had him, Tim Kerr, you had uh oh gosh, who was the who was the guy?
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_03: Um I can't he was up, he was in Toronto.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_03: Um Wendell Clark.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_03: Um yeah 30 30 goal scorer, gonna come in with elbows.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_03: I mean, those guys were like, and then Brendan Shanahan, obviously, you know, and John Leclerc were the kind of like the and Kachuk were kind of like the later versions of that, but like Cam Neely, the guy was just you know, what would his like what would he be like if he didn't have that knee net those knee issues that you know that he was a you know the year that they were playing Edmonton in the cup finals, he was out for a big chunk of time.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_03: And you think about what that could have been had he not had that injury, but just an unbelievable, like just I you know Denny Savard and Camini, two totally different players, but I would want the puck on their stick.
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_05: So yeah, well, gosh, I would I would do not have a black hawk on my bingo card for you.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_05: So uh that that's interesting.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_03: I like to think of him as a I like to think of him as a uh as a as a Montreal Canadian, I guess.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_03: Well, let's do a quick drill draw here.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_03: Let's do our little intro here and let's draw it up.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_03: I think that we absolutely um can do this drill draw.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_03: So uh let me get our uh little um drill draw intro here so that Grant can come in and edit this.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_03: The all-in-one hockey tool built from the bench.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_03: Our friend Brian, Brian Dolan, uh just gracious with his uh uh allowing us to help develop this with him.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_03: But if you haven't had a chance, get out to drifthockey.com.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_03: Sign up, subscriptions are are well worth it.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_03: You got everything from film study, drill drawing, um uh team scheduling, uh, drill draw powered by drift.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_03: And uh we've got uh we've got a drill that we're gonna share with the folks at home here, I think, coach.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_05: This is a uh this is a variation on uh a drill that you and I ran last week that you had in the playbook that I thought was great.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_05: Uh it made me think of it.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_05: And then we were just sitting here talking about keeping things light and keeping things fun.
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_05: And uh fun always includes uh the godfather of fun, Bob Mancini.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_05: So uh let's pull up the uh the rink.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_05: And this isn't complex, this is gonna be an easy drill.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_05: I like easy drills.
- 1:17:39SPEAKER_05: I'll take my headphones out because I'm I'm losing power, but I'll I'll switch over here.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_05: So uh what we're gonna do is we're gonna have uh let's split the team and why don't we have half the blue guys on the goal line, on both goal lines, above the goal.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_05: Let's just line some players up there above the goal.
- 1:18:06SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_05: All right, same side over here.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_05: Yep, same thing on the other side.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_05: Put a happy tree there, happy tree there.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_05: Bob Ross.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_05: Bob Ross sign, yep, and then we'll do the same thing on the other side.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_05: Got some gotta put some goals in, right?
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_05: Yep, let's put some goals in.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_05: Although you don't need them, but they're good markers, good landmarks, as you would say.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_03: Alright.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_05: So uh we've got the nets in.
- 1:18:40SPEAKER_05: Now let's add let's um let's add one blue player, but let's add one blue player which you have to behind that first top blue player on the left-hand side.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_05: We're gonna put them behind, and we'll talk about why in a second.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_05: And then let's do the same thing with red.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_05: Okay, so why do we have the players uh behind the other players of the same color?
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_05: Here's why we're gonna do it.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_05: Uh, so I don't know if Drift has the ability to do this.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_05: We're gonna test this out and see.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_05: If not, we'll have to take this back to Brian.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_05: So there are no pucks in this draw, zero pucks.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_05: This is a relay race, and so it's blue against red, and on the left-hand side, you'll see a player on the goal line with a player behind.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_05: Those are the first two players that go on the blue side, and then down at the bottom, a player uh on the red with another player right behind him.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_05: Those are the first two players on the red side, and they are skating from left to right.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_05: What they're doing though is they're skating, is the player that's in front has a hockey stick on one side and a hockey stick on the other side, and the player behind him is sitting down on the ice.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_05: Now you can have a variation of this.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_05: If you've got uh different age kids, you can have the player behind them on their knees.
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_05: But the idea is the player in front is gonna have one stick, is holding one end uh uh of a stick on either side.
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_05: The player behind is holding that same stick on either side, either on uh on his uh butt or on his knees, and the player in front is dragging their teammate from one end all the way to the other end of the ice.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_05: And so, as you can imagine, if you've got young players, you might have players of the same perhaps weight and size.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_05: If you've got bannems, you might have some players that have hit puberty, and maybe some players that haven't hit puberty.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_05: But we were just talking about having players in high school that could be anywhere from freshman to senior.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_05: So you could run this same drill.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_05: There's no reason why you couldn't do it, and this is a relay.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_05: This is just, and let me tell you what, you get into some older age kids, and this is a workout.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_05: These kids are digging in because you might have a player in front that maybe is 120 pounds, and you might have a player in back that let's say is 170 or 180 pounds, and so you're going back and forth, and you're gonna go through the whole lineup here, and ultimately somebody's gonna win.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_05: But uh a fun variation of uh a relay where you're getting creative, you're having fun, you're using your sticks, you're pulling your teammates, not dragging your teammates, you're pulling your teammates along uh back and forth the ice, and it's a competition.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_05: It's one team against the other, which is how I think we've talked about a lot of what makes practices fun.
- 1:22:03SPEAKER_05: How can you make it into a competition?
- 1:22:05SPEAKER_05: In this case, we're gonna pull our teammates along the ice.
- 1:22:08SPEAKER_05: You've probably seen this one before, coach.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_03: It's kind of like a modified root wheelbarrow race where you've got instead of you know putting somebody in front of you on their on their hands and you're holding their legs, the guy's behind you, and he's he's he's holding on to the two sticks that are maybe are kind of like ski poles under your arms or something like that.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_05: Yep, exactly.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_03: Love it.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_03: And uh, you know, I think we can we can make it work here on drill draw.
- 1:22:33SPEAKER_03: I think drift works it just fine.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_03: What are we gonna name this drill coach?
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_03: What are we gonna call it?
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_05: Ooh, I'm gonna call it uh dig in because you gotta dig.
- 1:22:44SPEAKER_05: You gotta dig because you might be pulling uh a player that's a little bit uh uh maybe has a couple of LBs on you if you're in front.
- 1:22:53SPEAKER_05: Uh so uh dig in is what comes to mind for me.
- 1:22:57SPEAKER_03: Well, feels like something we may be doing uh on Friday.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_03: I sometimes feel bad for these poor Ledoux players that we put through some of these drills.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_03: Um, but what a what a fun drill.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_03: And I just it's funny when you're doing when you when you do these fun drills like this because you'll look and you'll see these kids who are usually pretty stoic or maybe a little serious and they're giggling and they're having fun.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_03: You know, I've seen 16, 17-year-old, you know, boys and girls who do these drills, and you know, it's fun, it's so much fun, and it's it's it's counterintuitive to some of us adults, but like, yeah, you you throw a little uh uh you know goofiness into the mix and everybody has fun with it.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_03: So we're gonna call this one the dig in relay.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_03: Head over to our website, too many men on the mic.com to get this and other drills brought to you by Too Many Men on the Mic and all of our guests, ranging from some of the best coaches in the world, um, highest level coaches in the world through USA hockey to your loop, your local um uh hockey directors and coaches that are volunteers.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_03: Great, great drills out there.
- 1:24:04SPEAKER_03: And coach, I think this one's a keeper.
- 1:24:06SPEAKER_05: I can't wait to see our kids do it at the high school level.
- 1:24:10SPEAKER_05: I think that's gonna be fun.
- 1:24:11SPEAKER_05: We might hear some chirps, and something tells me we're probably gonna hear some voices out on the ice doing this next time uh uh at practice.
- 1:24:21SPEAKER_03: Well, that puts a wrap on it.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_03: We'll tie a bow on this episode.
