Transcript
- 0:00Great news for the sci-fi world, or maybe good news or maybe bad
- 0:05news. I want your takes on this.
- 0:08Did you see Nathan Fillion drop the Firefly?
- 0:13Firefly and we're going to animate it.
- 0:17We just need a studio to fund it.
- 0:20I saw that. You guys saw this hobble?
- 0:22Why? Why don't you start with it?
- 0:23I don't know. We we don't need to have it come
- 0:26back It we what we needed was Fox having faith in the show in
- 0:32the first part and giving it another season.
- 0:35And that was. Yeah, the.
- 0:37Time Machine to go back and do. Yeah, but wouldn't it be good
- 0:41just to get some of those stories we never got?
- 0:45It's just not going to be the same anymore.
- 0:49It's just not. It it's very hard to bring back
- 0:53a something that good and try and continue it like there's
- 0:59been some examples of I'll give an example, scrubs.
- 1:03So remember when they did that season no one wants to talk
- 1:06about? Season 9.
- 1:08I know it was terrible, but then.
- 1:10I had the D all the DVDs. They came back and the new
- 1:14season is fantastic because they actually, but that's rare.
- 1:20That is rare for that to actually work.
- 1:22Futurama. Futurama.
- 1:23Yeah. How many times?
- 1:26How many times was Futurama canceled?
- 1:28Yeah. And then the Comedy Central
- 1:30seasons. But just not.
- 1:32They weren't as good. Like they weren't bad.
- 1:34But then if you think of if you think of Boondock Saints and
- 1:38Boondock Saints too. Yeah. 1 is a lot more shit than
- 1:42the other. Yeah, you're.
- 1:44Thinking about putting it. It'll probably.
- 1:47I've never actually watched Firefly and I know I'm probably
- 1:49going to get a. Little fly.
- 1:50Whoa, we should kick you. Out bro.
- 1:52Whoa. Well, I'll tell you, it was it
- 1:55was good. It would have had a second
- 1:56season. Oh.
- 1:57Fuck you. Or knew this?
- 2:00Wow. Well, I I think they should just
- 2:04let let sleeping dogs lie. I mean, that show, it's so well
- 2:09thought of. The actors are so highly
- 2:12regarded because of the work they did on the series and the
- 2:15work they did on the movie. It that was a time and in its
- 2:19place it was great. Now everybody's aged up.
- 2:24Of course, yes, they want to do the animated thing.
- 2:26But you know what, everything that Hollywood does, all these
- 2:31these different productions come out years later.
- 2:34They try to resurrect something from the past.
- 2:36It always turns to shit and it just tarnishes the legacy of the
- 2:39original. And I think just letting.
- 2:42I mean to to counter this wait wait wait.
- 2:45Are you saying Picard was a mistake?
- 2:47Absolutely. God, that was.
- 2:49Oh that is horrible. Funny you should say that
- 2:51because I just started watching it and I'm like what?
- 2:55The Kurtzman. Didn't want to watch?
- 2:57That. Fucking.
- 3:01All of it well. Lower the the hold on, hold on
- 3:04is the. Other one.
- 3:05The AJ Abrams. Prodigy.
- 3:07Here. Monday, JJ.
- 3:09Abrams let me touch. My crapification one to your
- 3:13project. Thank you.
- 3:16Yeah. Michael, Bay Light and yeah, But
- 3:20talking about Firefly, the thing, yeah, I think we could
- 3:23kind of touched on what I want to say is like, it was really
- 3:26good in that era. Now things have completely
- 3:29changed and it's a little bit too late.
- 3:31Maybe if they did this 10 years ago, this would work.
- 3:35But there's still some hope, you know, like if it's done in a
- 3:40very tasteful way and if it's done, which is relevant to our
- 3:45times. Remember how Edge Runner just
- 3:49resurrected Cyberpunk? If if, if it's done, I'm not
- 3:54saying in that style, but with that kind of heart that it is
- 3:59actually really, really good, then there is hope.
- 4:02But if they're just going to treat it like, yeah, we're just
- 4:05bringing it back and want to use the fans sympathy, It's a little
- 4:09bit a decade. I think it's a decade late for
- 4:12that. I could say I could say there's
- 4:16a little bit of that like I would see like an Orville where
- 4:18it where it shifted from a comedy and then turned into
- 4:24something that was extremely relevant, extremely poignant and
- 4:27some of the best writing you've ever seen.
- 4:29And I think that that is possible.
- 4:30Let's. Yeah.
- 4:32Can I do that? Make it make it relevant to
- 4:34these times? Yeah.
- 4:36Can I be a little air of optimism here?
- 4:39Now. I know, I'm I know I kind of
- 4:42ride the line a lot. I'm optimistic and I'm going to
- 4:45tell you why. They don't have a studio.
- 4:48They their their whole campaign is we need a home.
- 4:51So we need someone to basic basically bankroll this.
- 4:54But a look from how I understand it, it seems like Nathan
- 4:59Fillion, along with a couple of other producers, kind of got
- 5:02this team together on their own. And so now they're just looking
- 5:06for someone to bankroll it. And if they, if they've done
- 5:09that, I'm assuming that they're going to, that they're going to
- 5:14say like, OK, like we're doing it our way.
- 5:17We know how we're doing it. And anyone, any producer that
- 5:24has half a brain, which I know a lot of them don't, they're all
- 5:27just little nepo babies. But any producer with half a
- 5:30brain will see like, just like let these people who clearly
- 5:33know what they're doing, you know, do it.
- 5:37And it's Firefly. It's a huge IP.
- 5:39You have, I mean that the, those social media videos have gone, I
- 5:43couldn't, I don't know, 1,000,000 millions of people
- 5:45have seen them and uploaded them and, and, and shared them.
- 5:48Everybody here knows what I'm talking about.
- 5:51So they're in a really good position to make something
- 5:55really good. I mean, we had we had Expanse go
- 6:00to Amazon and that was amazing. But I'm personally hoping for
- 6:03Apple to take this one on. The newest You're pissing me off
- 6:06today, man. Dude, Apple's killing Apple.
- 6:09You mean get out of here? Oh my God.
- 6:12The one I don't know. When you and Duke, when I was
- 6:15gone, Duke said I have an Apple computer, I don't have an Apple
- 6:17computer and I I don't like this first of.
- 6:20All you should I. Love Apple?
- 6:23No, I just look, I got a 9800 X 3D with a 9070 XTI got it fully
- 6:29custom built and everything like that.
- 6:31And I program and I make firmware and all that other
- 6:34stuff and because I make props, right?
- 6:35All the Star Trek shit, right? But my Mac, my 6 year old Mac
- 6:40laptop M1 can compile shit and be more efficient than my brand
- 6:46new gaming computer. I'm telling you, it's the best
- 6:48value you have in computers right now.
- 6:50Well, in chat right now, Skeeter in chat, writes band Lord
- 6:53Anubis. So.
- 6:56F you Skeeter, I like you. You're, you're actually really
- 7:00cool, so I'll say hi next time. I think they should leave.
- 7:04Leave Firefly alone. My my first, my first and only
- 7:11piece of evidence for the court of public opinion is season 8
- 7:17and 9 of of our favorite show, the insettification of Game of
- 7:23Thrones, and that happened during the run.
- 7:28That was the. Wiper's problem?
- 7:29What was it in seven and eight? What was the 9th?
- 7:31Season apples in Oregon. 7th and 7th and eight those those guys
- 7:35were just they're ruining 3 body problem right now so.
- 7:39That was amazing though. I mean, I don't.
- 7:41Think. There's I don't think there's
- 7:42ever been a more thorough, complete and sudden death of the
- 7:47relevance of an IP. I mean that that went from
- 7:51everyone's talking about it, everyone's watching it.
- 7:54People are, you know, wearing buying shirts, doing whatever to
- 7:59it was gone. Like everyone disagreed.
- 8:01But now lately I didn't even pay any attention to that, but as
- 8:06soon as Knights. Of the Seven Kingdom.
- 8:08Came out, came. Out.
- 8:10Yeah, I watched every, every show of that and it was, it was
- 8:14amazing. If you've read, yeah, not to be
- 8:17that guy, but if you've read the Knights of the Seven Kingdoms
- 8:19book, I mean, it's short. It's a book you can read with
- 8:21your kids. Is it?
- 8:24I mean, it's a. Little gory.
- 8:25Is it a little gory? Yeah, Dunkin and Egg, right?
- 8:27The Dunkin and Egg story. Yeah.
- 8:30Yeah, Yeah. They're doing a really good job
- 8:32with that show in terms of. Keeping.
- 8:34It in line with with the books. You don't agree, hobo?
- 8:38No, it's I, I need to watch it. I.
- 8:40I highly recommend it. Oh.
- 8:41It's very good. I started.
- 8:43It's very, very good. I'm happy to know that you guys
- 8:45are telling me that it's good. I'm I'm hopeful, but with the
- 8:48Game of Thrones, those writers were absolute crap.
- 8:52They, they were just resourcing the real material as long as the
- 8:55books were written. And when they reached the
- 8:57position where the books are not written, their heads were so
- 9:01stuck in the sand like, oh, we are the meta.
- 9:04And they just didn't talk to Martin.
- 9:07They didn't consult on him. They they just became
- 9:10egotistical. Plus Lucasfilms, who was the
- 9:14production house they gave him, they gave them the HBO to to do
- 9:20the movies in Star Wars. And they were like, we just want
- 9:22to wrap this up and jump on that.
- 9:24And they just killed it. They just killed, like we just
- 9:27want to finish it. Up so badly.
- 9:28They stopped caring about it. Yeah.
- 9:31Yeah, exactly. They didn't even get to do that.
- 9:34I don't know. And then they've been working on
- 9:36these couple of episodes of this reality TV show later, and then
- 9:40they get to do The Three Body Problem, which is the best
- 9:44science fiction book I've read. Like the the whole series, the
- 9:47remembrance of Earth's past. What a cosmic horror and they
- 9:52have successfully butchered it now with first season and
- 9:56people, people like it. People still like it, but well,
- 9:59you need to read the books to understand what they have done
- 10:01with that I'm. Hoping they're just fast
- 10:04forwarding through the first couple books because like, the
- 10:07real crazy stuff is what goes on in the universe, so they kind of
- 10:11like to abridge things maybe. I don't know.
- 10:13I mean, it's the only hope I have for it.
- 10:15Have you seen the original Anubis?
- 10:17The original that that the production that happened in
- 10:19China, the $0.10, the variation. Of that, I paid for that.
- 10:23I did see the first season, it was great.
- 10:24To watch that. Yeah, yeah, it's company.
- 10:31Do you reckon those cents were good cents given to $0.10?
- 10:34Well, it was a little bit more than you had to buy a
- 10:37subscription. So I paid the subscription while
- 10:39the while the show was going on and then after the subscription
- 10:42was over, you know, just let it go.
- 10:46It was on YouTube. It was you just joined YouTube.
- 10:48You just joined the house now? Belongs yeah yeah, I have it on
- 10:51I have it on YouTube. I I have it downloaded and I've
- 10:53watched a few and I think that I I like that way more than I I
- 10:57enjoyed. I like the Netflix free body
- 11:00problem. Definitely highly recommended
- 11:03guys read those three books. Those are like wow, the real.
- 11:08Cosmic horror. It was very.
- 11:11Stop loss in the translation that I understand would not have
- 11:14appealed to Western audiences as much.
- 11:18A lot of sexism. I mean that.
- 11:19Use the thing. Yep.
- 11:20You never know. It's not about the characters,
- 11:22you know, it's, it's just not about the characters.
- 11:24It's more, it's, it's a bigger, it's a bigger picture.
- 11:27And when you understand that, that the characters are just
- 11:30people conduit of moving the story forward, that's all they
- 11:36are. It's not about their personal
- 11:38struggle, which is the problem with Hollywood right now.
- 11:40Like everyone just have to have an issue.
- 11:43It's just, well, that's DND failures that they.
- 11:45Were like no. We we need to focus on the
- 11:47characters and it's like everyone agreed, even though it
- 11:50was that didn't like it was like OK, it's not about the
- 11:52characters. It's like they're making, well,
- 11:56the. The.
- 11:57Oh the remaking threads, what here has watched threads?
- 12:02There's social media network. I have it on my computer like
- 12:06torrent downloads that I haven't seen.
- 12:09Not about the characters. It is not about the characters.
- 12:13It is not supposed to be optimistic.
- 12:15It is very depressing. Guess what they're trying to do
- 12:19with the remake of it? Oh, it's going to be a comedy
- 12:22apocalypse. It's like pepping.
- 12:25It up. No, no, it, it, it, it's one of
- 12:29the most depressing things I've ever watched.
- 12:32And it's like on the beach and trying to make on the beach a
- 12:35happy, fun story, which no, that no, again, they're they're
- 12:41handing out like suicide pills because the the nuclear cloud is
- 12:47coming to just kill everyone. It's it's depressing like this
- 12:52is. No, just you can have depressing
- 12:54literature and movies and shows it it's OK, you can do that.
- 13:02But hobo can I tell you they don't sell as well?
- 13:05I know because if I'm home with my lady and if you got a lady,
- 13:10you know she wants to watch a sitcom.
- 13:13Nine times. Out of. 10 She wants sexist
- 13:16generalization. Very.
- 13:18Yeah, my lady wants. To get a rumble.
- 13:20That's not right. My wife wants to watch Yeah
- 13:23Talker highlights and she's. Not like.
- 13:26I'm not, it's not, it's not a. Lady.
- 13:28Yeah, same lady thing. Omitted evolution videos on
- 13:32YouTube that are two hours long. So.
- 13:34You talk. So, George, are you?
- 13:36You've been. You've been shut down.
- 13:37You fucked. HH.
- 13:39Bomber Guy video. Your your archaic feelings on.
- 13:44Yeah, will it? Sexual stratification or not?
- 13:48In general. In general, what do Jar Jar
- 13:51wants to say is what? No, what do Jar Jar wants to say
- 13:54is basically he's he's coming from the point of view that the
- 13:56popular culture, the mass culture is dumbed down.
- 14:00I think. Yeah, that's.
- 14:01True, I think, but that's. Same popular.
- 14:03However, Jar Jar, the same popular, the same popular
- 14:07culture audience and the mass culture audience was the
- 14:10audience which made the feelings about A Game of Thrones known.
- 14:14You can only push the shit if far enough.
- 14:18Like you can't just you can't just keep shoveling that crap to
- 14:22us all the time. It doesn't always work.
- 14:24So you can take a leave a little bit, you can go a little bit, a
- 14:27little bit, you know, Yeah, I. Mean my my larger point was I
- 14:29think lightheartedness sells. More.
- 14:33Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:33Drama and like shit that makes you think because most of the
- 14:36time you get home, you work, you just want something like on
- 14:39that's like chill and and and lighthearted, which is kind of
- 14:42what Firefly. I mean, Firefly was unique
- 14:45because it fulfilled all of these, these aspects, you know?
- 14:48It hit all the buttons. It hit all the buttons.
- 14:51It showed resilience, yeah. It made Murphy.
- 14:54Jack I like the Serenity more. The movie.
- 14:58I like the tone of that movie more.
- 15:00Yeah, I like that more than the show.
- 15:02That's the. Contrary, I like.
- 15:03That's no I, I. Agree.
- 15:06I mean, it's OK. Yeah, You agree, Anubis?
- 15:09Interesting. Yeah, 'cause Serenity was OK.
- 15:13So Fox knew they fucked up, right?
- 15:16And at the time, $175,000,000 to invest into a movie was a lot of
- 15:22money. And what they did with Serenity
- 15:25was like a proper like actual respectful send off that didn't
- 15:33compromise on anything. I I think that you know, they,
- 15:37they knew it was, they knew they couldn't bring back another
- 15:40season. It's just been awkward.
- 15:41It would have been weird, especially with the, you know,
- 15:45the, the, the shift in the, in the, in the industry at the
- 15:48time. And they gave it what they could
- 15:52and they, they gave it something that was very special because I
- 15:55remember Serenity as if it was the same show.
- 15:58I don't even remember it as a separate movie.
- 16:00And therefore we don't need it to come back.
- 16:02In a cartoon. Or anime.
- 16:07Unless done in. Yeah.
- 16:10What? I think.
- 16:11I'm I'm being done right? I have very little I.
- 16:15Have a lot. I think it's going to be done
- 16:16pretty well. Dude, I read I read the the
- 16:19graphic novel like went through that a little bit man, if they
- 16:23animate this and like did you, the animation studio they hired
- 16:28is good. It's not some Dave Filoni
- 16:30bullshit computer. Generated.
- 16:32I like Dave Filoni, yeah. Oh, you know, get out of here
- 16:37saying. Like.
- 16:38Clone Wars, they worked with that animation.
- 16:40File you can be long. You guys can all be wrong like
- 16:44fine. This is this is a Tony Gilroy
- 16:47podcast. Get out of here.
- 16:49Here, here's the thing, George, are what I think what
- 16:52everybody's channeling right now is basically we all love
- 16:55Firefly. It has a very special place in
- 16:57our heart. And if they screw it up, it's
- 17:02like, and especially Fillion does it, then man, that's not
- 17:07it's going to destroy that good vibes that we associate with the
- 17:11Firefly. Is the juice worth the squeeze?
- 17:14Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
- 17:16But do you really want to do this?
- 17:19Isn't it like a little late for that?
- 17:21Like it's, it's it's it's the we are coming from a place of love,
- 17:26bro. So here's the potential, right?
- 17:30Yeah, last word. Here we saw and, or like if, if
- 17:34this is a serious animated series where it shows them
- 17:40rising up and becoming the brown coats and the reasons why things
- 17:45like that, I think that would be really awesome.
- 17:48I don't know, you know, I don't know if they're going to do
- 17:50flashbacks through it all and you know, 'cause I supposedly
- 17:53it's supposed to be set in the later times, but I think they
- 17:56can do things like explaining that and, and, and showing more
- 18:00of the reasons and making it meaningful As for these times,
- 18:05as he was saying. I just don't see any studios
- 18:07about giving them the budget they need to properly make it
- 18:10and not metal. It needs to be done tastefully.
- 18:18It needs to be done with the IT is, it is.
- 18:22It's a tough job, man, So creative.
- 18:24If if you think about it, it's there's a lot of chance of
- 18:28failing it, but but if they do it, that'll be the best story,
- 18:32that'll be the most beautiful story.
- 18:35Oh yeah. Well, I think that's a good
- 18:37place to leave it. Thank you all for staying.
- 18:39We are way past our usual time, but I thank you all for hanging
- 18:45in there. Hanging in there.
- 18:46With me. This is Open Comms Radio, your
- 18:49Star Citizen Collins show, and this has been Open Comms Radio
- 18:52Talks Firefly.
