- 0:17the energy and consciousness that creates your reality. I'm here
- 0:22to help you heal and awaken with Energy Medicine. Welcome
- 0:28to Energy Medicine. I'm your host, Diane Goldner, and the
- 0:33wonderful Julie Hoyle is back with us today. And she
- 0:36is the host of Talking True and a wonderful spiritual mentor.
- 0:43So welcome, Julie.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Thank you, Diane. As you know, I always love joining you.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I love talking to you. And you know what? So
- 0:51does the audience. Everyone, it's really amazing. And we have
- 0:55a great topic today because I think it's one that's
- 0:58relevant to every single person, and that is what do
- 1:01you do when the going gets tough? Because I think
- 1:06everyone has a moment where the going gets tough. So
- 1:10when I thought of this topic, I really, it's twofold.
- 1:15One is what happens when in your own personal life
- 1:18you hit a storm. You hit choppy waters, okay? And
- 1:23it happens, right? It could be illness. It could be
- 1:26somebody in your family becoming ill. It could be a
- 1:30work situation. And the other part of that question is,
- 1:36what do you do when the world around you is
- 1:38so crazy? Things are so seemingly upsetting. And what do
- 1:45you do? So we're going to look at both of
- 1:47those today. Should we start with a personal? I'm feeling
- 1:51that that's where we should go. Yes.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's a great starting place.
- 1:56Speaker 1: So I want to bring up, because Julie and I
- 1:59are both in a moment where our mothers suddenly have
- 2:03taken a turn for the worse. So, you know, that
- 2:06is one of those moments where the going gets a
- 2:08little tough. Maybe we're fine personally, but the fact that
- 2:12somebody that we love is declining or suffering... is a
- 2:17really tough place to be. And it does upset the
- 2:20apple cart, right? You suddenly feel the ground has been
- 2:24pulled from you. Do you want to take it away?
- 2:26I have thoughts what I do, but why don't you
- 2:29share how you approach this?
- 2:33Speaker 2: Where I'd like to start is a sticking point for
- 2:36many people who are spiritual Christians.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And you're putting that in quotes.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Or who are on a kind of a spiritual path
- 2:51or journey or an awakening, whatever you want to call it,
- 2:54because it can be a tendency to think that you
- 2:57shouldn't be feeling upset or angry or depressed, you know,
- 3:02any of those things. And that, you know, when those
- 3:04feelings and emotions come up, especially when they're really intense,
- 3:09that there's something wrong with your practice and maybe you
- 3:11need to meditate more or, you know, do whatever to
- 3:17change that dynamic.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Find a new teacher.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yes. You know, and the thing is, all of those
- 3:24practices and, you know, whatever we do to center ourselves
- 3:27are fantastic. They're great. They're wonderful. They can be very
- 3:31supportive and helpful. But it's also important to acknowledge if
- 3:36we're feeling depressed, or anxious or concerned or, you know, or, or,
- 3:43you know, whatever.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Grounded or.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Yes. Yes. Spinning, you know, don't know what to do.
- 3:50Can't make a clear decision about something. All of that
- 3:54has its place and it's perfectly okay too. And it's
- 4:00really important to welcome all of that and to not
- 4:04kind of try and rush through it as well. You know,
- 4:08try and kind of manage it away or rush through
- 4:10it or meditate to get out of that feeling. Because
- 4:15those qualities are here to speak to us and to
- 4:18show us something. You know, once we acknowledge that maybe
- 4:21we're feeling helpless because, for example, we can't do a
- 4:26whole lot if we have a family member who is ailing.
- 4:31you know, in terms of helping their suffering go away.
- 4:34And again, I can speak from direct experience with that
- 4:37because my brother recently passed away from cancer and the
- 4:41worst pain for me was not being able to help
- 4:45him alleviate the pain that he was dealing with, even
- 4:48with morphine.
- 4:50Speaker 1: And I know you tried.
- 4:51Speaker 2: You know, I did. You did everything you could. Yes,
- 4:55I did energy work and that definitely helps. It does help.
- 4:59At the same time, we have to be okay with
- 5:03those phases and periods in our life where we feel helpless.
- 5:08We can't do anything per se.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Well, we do something, but it doesn't change the course.
- 5:14It might uplift that person. I'm sure it does. Yes,
- 5:18it does. Spiritually, emotionally, maybe we can't track it. Maybe
- 5:22they can't track it. But I always believe holding light
- 5:28offering light, it's always going to bring things to a
- 5:32higher order.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes. But I was meaning more in terms
- 5:36of the physical, you know, sometimes if there's distance, like
- 5:41where I'm in the Bahamas, my mother's in the UK,
- 5:43so that even all of that said, I can direct
- 5:48energy healing and prayers and all those things. But obviously
- 5:52there are moments where we can feel that it's a
- 5:57hopeless situation or that we can't do much or whatever.
- 6:00And there can be a struggle with that.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Or that they're slipping away, no matter what you do,
- 6:05because everyone does get the ticket home.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Yes, yes. So my first point of contact, so to speak,
- 6:15in these difficult situations is to remember that it's okay
- 6:22to not know. It's okay to feel moments of helplessness.
- 6:27It's okay to feel irritated, upset, frustrated, you know, whatever
- 6:32those kind of seemingly negative emotions look like. And then,
- 6:37you know, the thing is, is that what happens in
- 6:40my personal experience is when I arrive at that place
- 6:44and there's acceptance and there's kind of an embracing of that,
- 6:48then if there are solutions and steps forward, then they
- 6:51become clear. rather than, you know, trying to get into
- 6:56kind of super girl, super woman right after that to
- 7:00try and fix or change the situation and wear yourself
- 7:04out in the process. So that's kind of my go-to.
- 7:08I mean, I'm sure you have your own.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I, you know, when you talk about this,
- 7:12I mean, I have to say with everything I know
- 7:15about the soul passing on, I was personally a little
- 7:19surprised to find I was rattled, you know, but it's
- 7:22my mother. It's the ground upon which my whole life, right,
- 7:26springs from. And she's my last remaining parent because my
- 7:31father has already passed. And again, you know, it's the uncertainty.
- 7:37It's the, although my mother isn't, I don't know if
- 7:41she knows she's suffering or she just doesn't dwell on
- 7:47it because she's really always focusing on the positive, which
- 7:50is fantastic. So, you know, I just had to accept
- 7:53that it was a big deal. It was a really
- 7:57big deal. And I know she's going to be okay
- 8:01because the soul is always okay. And I know I'm okay.
- 8:07You know, but when, so when something like something major
- 8:10happens in my life, I do tend to meditate more
- 8:14because I find I need to. It supports me. It
- 8:17comforts me. It untangles some of the, you know, whatever
- 8:23I'm feeling. It brings in that divine light and it
- 8:26just brings more harmony and centeredness for me. So I
- 8:29always meditate and pray. And as I tell some of
- 8:34my clients sometimes, take a walk. It's nothing like being outside,
- 8:40moving your body, feeling the sun, connecting to the earth.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yes, yes. Or, you know, clean your home, you know,
- 8:49or do some baking or cooking or something that is
- 8:52nurturing to you. That can be very helpful too. I mean,
- 8:56these things are really simple, but we can often forget, right?
- 9:00Especially when you get into that kind of tornado.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Of frantically, you know, getting into a panic or anxiety mode. Yes.
- 9:09It's easy to forget. But, you know, the body's a
- 9:13great barometer. It'll soon, you know, set us straight.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Yes. Walking, you know, if you don't have any spiritual practice, walking,
- 9:22and even if you have tons of spiritual practices, There's
- 9:25really nothing like taking a walk in my view. I mean,
- 9:28it just steadies me. It aligns me and it takes
- 9:35me out of my mental body right into the body.
- 9:38And that's really great. One of the most important things
- 9:42we can do is stay present with what we're feeling.
- 9:49Instead of try to, like when you're baking or walking,
- 9:53it's not that you're trying to escape the feeling. It's
- 9:55that you're, it gives you something to do while you're
- 9:58with the feeling. Yes, yes.
- 10:07Speaker 2: The thing is, I mean, I love walking. I really
- 10:09love being out in nature and looking up at the
- 10:11sky because that connects me with infinity.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Yes. To speak.
- 10:16Speaker 2: But also something like cooking or baking, I find really
- 10:20great therapy too because when I'm looking at my hands
- 10:24and I'm utilizing my hands, somehow the mind becomes very still.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:29Speaker 2: That takes me into this place of feeling really centered
- 10:33and supported and guided from within. as wonderful things.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Recently, I think I've been doing more with cleaning and
- 10:42clearing clutter, getting rid of things that I don't need.
- 10:46It's also very helpful.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Yes. Boxes and boxes of stuff.
- 10:54Speaker 1: The other thing on a more, you know, metaphysical level
- 10:59is Realizing everything is always in perfect divine order. It's
- 11:04we that don't always understand that order, but it really
- 11:07is always in perfect divine order. And for me, that
- 11:12is one of my highest practices is reminding myself everything
- 11:17is in perfect divine order. Because, you know, if it's
- 11:20something like you're losing your job or things are changing
- 11:23around you in ways that you wouldn't choose, it can
- 11:27be really unnerving. So I always like to remind myself,
- 11:31everything is in perfect divine order. And so what seems
- 11:35like a negative is for my benefit, and it's my
- 11:38job to unwrap the gift.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Yes. Yeah, and that's really where the work is, right? Yes.
- 11:49Especially having the patience to just be with it and
- 11:53see what transpires rather than trying to rush to something.
- 11:59rush to a decision or jump into something that you
- 12:02might later regret. So, you know, all of that is
- 12:05really helpful.
- 12:18Speaker 1: So one of the other things that, you know, is
- 12:21implied in everything we're talking about, but I just want
- 12:24to explicitly bring it to the fore is is making space,
- 12:32just being present. And so it might mean that you're
- 12:38less busy instead of more busy. Sometimes people like just
- 12:43to get more busy because they're upset. But actually, I
- 12:48find that if I get less busy, if I just
- 12:52do less, even if it means dismantling something from my schedule,
- 12:58I find that gives me the time to really understand
- 13:04on a deeper level what it is I need, what
- 13:06it is I need to understand, what it is I
- 13:09can release, what it is I can do, any of
- 13:13those and all of those things. Do you?
- 13:15Speaker 2: Yes, yes. That's really worked for me as well. You know,
- 13:19and the other part of that too is that oftentimes
- 13:23these great big kind of gaps in my schedule will
- 13:26open up without me kind of consciously trying to create that.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I'm laughing because I, I, I kind of joke sometimes
- 13:38that I don't make my own schedule because, um, I
- 13:43have found, I mean, this is amazing what you're talking
- 13:46about because I have literally found like, um, sometimes there'll
- 13:51be a gap in my schedule and I won't know why,
- 13:53but then when I get there, there's a reason that
- 13:55like either I'm not feeling well or something's occurred. And
- 13:59we were talking about this before we started our, you know,
- 14:03conversation today, you know, our podcast conversation, but I was
- 14:08once planning a trip, you know, and scheduling, it was
- 14:13a work trip and scheduling all the things that I
- 14:16wanted to do and who I wanted to meet and
- 14:19get done. And And no matter what I did, there
- 14:22was this like week that just didn't want to get filled.
- 14:28And I just, I kept saying, wow, I have this
- 14:31dead zone. And then it turned out, you know, a
- 14:35really good friend of mine's father passed at that time
- 14:39and she really needed me. And that was the dead zone.
- 14:43So sometimes we have to pay attention to our language too. Yes, yes.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I've had similar situations where I've had space opening up,
- 14:51you know, which is really unexpected. And then, of course,
- 14:55something happens either health-wise or, like you said, a friend
- 15:00needs help or I have clients reaching out to me
- 15:03because there's an emergency.
- 15:04Speaker 1: That's another one, yes, where you have a space and
- 15:09then somebody really needs that time. But you don't know that,
- 15:13but somehow the universe knows that they're going to need
- 15:16that time. Yes.
- 15:18Speaker 2: So I don't worry about those things. You know, it's
- 15:22just kind of, it's taken care of by my higher secretary. Yes.
- 15:28Speaker 1: And I also find that, you know, I can always
- 15:30use whatever space is being given to me and my schedule.
- 15:34So there's, you know, but it is interesting how there
- 15:38is a higher order going on.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Yes. You know, it's the same as true with COVID.
- 15:43It was, you know, a lot of people were complaining about,
- 15:46But I actually was very happy with the whole lockdown situation.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Me too. It was so peaceful and relaxing. I don't
- 15:55want to laugh because I know some people really struggled. Right.
- 15:58But it was so nice because everything got more peaceful
- 16:01and unwound and the pressure to go out there and
- 16:04do this or do that diminished. And, you know, it
- 16:07had that. I mean, that's a really great example of
- 16:10everything being in perfect divine order because, you I'd been
- 16:15traveling back and forth, bi-coastal, between New York and L.A.
- 16:19for two decades. And it was exhausting. It was fun,
- 16:24but it was a little exhausting because every time I
- 16:27got back, I had to recover and then I was
- 16:30planning my next trip. You know, with COVID, I finally
- 16:35moved to L.A. completely.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Wow.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. And that was a relief. I mean, you know,
- 16:42it was a little sad to let New York go.
- 16:45Not that I don't go to New York or whatever,
- 16:48but not in the same amount of time or anything.
- 16:52So that's an example of perfect divine order. You know,
- 16:55another one that happens is people might lose their job
- 16:59and be very devastated. And... You know, sometimes they can't see,
- 17:06but often something more wonderful emerges for them.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Yes, yes. Or they finally do the thing that they've
- 17:14always wanted to do. That's what I mean.
- 17:15Speaker 1: They give themselves the freedom because what do they have
- 17:19to lose?
- 17:20Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. So you never quite know. And again, it's
- 17:24always about just welcoming what is happening, as difficult as
- 17:28that may be. And I'm certainly not simplifying that. It
- 17:32can be devastating. It can be terribly upsetting when things
- 17:36happen that we're not expecting. But we can at least
- 17:40be with it, even if we don't like it. If
- 17:43we can be with what is happening, then somehow we
- 17:46can kind of navigate our way through.
- 17:48Speaker 1: There's a great saying, and I tell this to my
- 17:51son because he's old enough to understand it to some degree.
- 17:55The only constant is change.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Yes.
- 18:00Speaker 1: I think none of us really like change. It's nice
- 18:02when it's going along, at least when it's going along
- 18:05in a good way, right? But really the only constant
- 18:09is change. Things are always going to change.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Yes.
- 18:13Speaker 1: There's one other thing that's coming up for me, which
- 18:16I had thought about before, but important to mention is,
- 18:19you know, when you're going through a dark period, because
- 18:21we've been talking more about maybe things happening to other
- 18:25people that affect us. But when you're going through your
- 18:28own personal dark period, which I've definitely gone through, the
- 18:33dark soul of the night, it's really important to know,
- 18:37to remind yourself it's temporary because everything always is changing, right?
- 18:43And so you can be in a really moment of despair, bleakness,
- 18:49and feel like things are never going to be okay. Right.
- 18:52And the truth is it's going to be okay. It
- 18:56is okay. And if you can just hang in there. Yes.
- 19:01Things are going to totally transform and, you know, there's
- 19:05going to be an upswing again.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Yes. Yes. And again, as tough as that is, if
- 19:12we can just be with that, you know, and feel
- 19:15all the feels, right? And try to kind of push
- 19:19it away or whatever. That does change. And we can,
- 19:24we always seemingly, certainly in my experience anyway, I've come
- 19:28out of it with a renewed kind of interest, with
- 19:32renewed understanding.
- 19:35Speaker 1: And renewed, like a blossoming, right? It's like you go underground,
- 19:41you're dormant in some way because you're working on solving
- 19:45whatever it is. But at the same time, it's a
- 19:49time of joy. of something new.
- 19:52Speaker 2: Yes. Yes. And we may not know what that looks like.
- 19:56But if, as you said, if we hang in there
- 19:59and something always can, we come out of it better somehow,
- 20:03if you can use that word.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. You know, the other thing is I have
- 20:09found when I've gone through my own dark periods, you know,
- 20:12when you look back, it's sometimes the most fruitful period
- 20:16of your life. Yes. When I went through the transformation
- 20:21from journalist to healer, oh, my God, I thought it
- 20:23was going to be a bag lady. It was really terrible.
- 20:28I'm laughing now because I wouldn't go back for a
- 20:31million bucks. You know what I mean? It was like
- 20:34the best thing that ever happened to me. But the
- 20:36process of unraveling that identity and the idea that my
- 20:42identity is fixed on, you know, a job or a
- 20:45profession or a career as opposed to the divine self.
- 20:48I mean, it was gruesome.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Yeah. Listen, I mean, I can really relate because when
- 20:55My husband and I moved to Grand Bahama Island in 2004.
- 21:01You know, we'd come from India. And it was like,
- 21:07what in the world is this place? Because it's very
- 21:09kind of oriented towards drinking and partying and the beach
- 21:12life and this and that and the other. And I
- 21:14just felt like, you know, I did not belong there
- 21:17at all.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Just out of water.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Yeah. And yeah, it was really, really, really hard. I
- 21:25was finding it difficult to find community. And it was
- 21:28because of that feeling, that isolation, I started reaching out
- 21:33and writing emails to, you know, friends that I'd been
- 21:37at the ashram with. You were one of them. And
- 21:41then writing in my journal and then out of, you know,
- 21:44my filling journal after journal after journal, this kind of
- 21:48directive to start writing a book. came alive and also
- 21:52to write articles for mind, body, spirit magazines. Now I'm
- 21:56sure if I'd been somewhere that was more kind of
- 22:00supportive in terms of my spiritual orientation and there was
- 22:04a meditation group or a meditation center or an ashram
- 22:07to go to, I probably wouldn't have spent so much
- 22:10time doing my own inner work and then journaling and then,
- 22:14you know, writing the books. So, um, it, it was
- 22:18incredibly fruitful. But, you know, at the time it was.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Painful, right?
- 22:24Speaker 2: It was painful.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Yeah. I've been through those periods more than once. And
- 22:29I've learned that, you know, first of all, you know,
- 22:33the time we have with ourself is to be treasured.
- 22:38You know, it really is one of the biggest gifts
- 22:42you can have. And so, yeah. So when there's that,
- 22:49sense of loss and you know loss of community loss
- 22:52of companionship loss of a partner it can be very
- 22:56devastating but at the same time there's that renewal.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Yes there's a doorway there's a portal or whatever you
- 23:04want to call it that is right there.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Yeah and so it's our job to open up to
- 23:11the gift right.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Yes for sure yes I always remember there was a
- 23:17quote that has been said to be by St. Thomas,
- 23:22which goes something like, if you bring forth what is
- 23:25within you, what is within you will save you. Oh, yes.
- 23:29You know, if you do not bring forth what is
- 23:31within you, what is within you will destroy you. And
- 23:35that has certainly been true in my personal experience and
- 23:41what I've seen as well with the clients that I've
- 23:44worked with. is a lot of depression is kind of
- 23:48surrounded or kind of encapsulates these gifts that have not
- 23:55been allowed to kind of blossom and grow and be expressed. Because,
- 24:00you know, for whatever reason, fear, doubt, anxieties, you know.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Yeah. And, you know, we sort of, a lot of
- 24:08us met and were taught that in society. to self-medicate
- 24:12by either watching more TV or going to the bar
- 24:17or getting together with friends. And, you know, there's nothing
- 24:22wrong with any of those things, but sometimes the best
