- 0:34Hello and welcome back. This is the More Carbs podcast.
- 0:37We are a team of dietitians and we talk every Thursday about
- 0:40sports nutrition for the girlies.
- 0:42My name is Jenna and I host this.
- 0:43Podcast and my name is Riley. You'll also see me on this
- 0:46podcast. I am the owner and founder of
- 0:48Steady State Performance Nutrition.
- 0:50We specialize in helping female athletes recover from low energy
- 0:53availability and together along with Lily Rhymer, we are team
- 0:55steady state. Before we get into today's
- 0:57episode, we are going to do our high and low, so sharing just a
- 1:00a little bit about our week, the good and the parts we wish had
- 1:01gone a little bit differently. Riley, as always, can you kick
- 1:04us off? Everybody welcome back.
- 1:06I have a very exciting high because I get to see Jenna next
- 1:08week. I'm so excited.
- 1:10And Lily and Lily, we are doing our company off site in Arizona.
- 1:14You guys remember if you're a true Emor Carbs fan in December,
- 1:17we talked about how we're doing your trip as a company.
- 1:20We're doing a little group off site and it's happening next
- 1:22week. Which is great.
- 1:23So so excited to see both of you.
- 1:25What? Are we going to do Jenna?
- 1:27Everything you know, we're probably going to run because
- 1:29we're, we've forced Lily, no, she's elected to start her
- 1:32running era as well. We're going to spend all the
- 1:34time outside because it's going to be beautiful.
- 1:35You guys are going to enjoy the beautiful weather.
- 1:37All the rains, I'm going to be so mad at you.
- 1:41It's not going to. It's all going.
- 1:42To you know what, I'm actually even, I'm very excited to see
- 1:45you, but I'm also very excited to meet George.
- 1:47Yeah, you've never met George. I haven't met George.
- 1:50George loves everybody, so he's going to be super excited.
- 1:53I'm very. Excited.
- 1:54That's my high. How about your low?
- 1:55I feel like I don't want to talk about a low because I'm on a
- 1:57high right now, OK? We can.
- 2:00No, my low is that I was really sick the month of February.
- 2:04I'm like super bummed about it. I feel like 2026 has just been
- 2:09beating me up a little bit. I had a little hip thing going
- 2:12on with my leg and then I was like sick for three weeks and
- 2:17I'm just over it it. Has not been your year with
- 2:19illness. I feel like every other week we
- 2:21get on a call and you're like stuffy again or someone in your
- 2:24house got something. So you know, it's kind of coming
- 2:26for you. Just hasn't been a great year
- 2:28for for that for you. Guys, I'm negative splitting
- 2:30this year. That's what I talking about with
- 2:32one of my clients. I'm like, it's not starting off
- 2:34great. It's gonna end great.
- 2:35I love that. That's just me complaining but
- 2:37it's just been. I'm so tired of being sick.
- 2:39I'm so that's fair. How are you?
- 2:40What's your high and your love? My high is I've had so many
- 2:44clients who have gotten their period back who have recently
- 2:46started to like PR races. These being clients that have
- 2:50continued to work with me past getting their period back.
- 2:52So that way we could focus on sports nutrition, especially in
- 2:54this like upcoming track season. Had a lot of girls that were
- 2:57doing indoor track and all that sort of stuff.
- 2:58So just so excited to see them kind of get into that place
- 3:01where like fueling has been restored, period has been
- 3:04restored, and now they're performing incredibly well.
- 3:07So I've just had so many individuals that I work with PR
- 3:10recently and even some people that I worked with, you know,
- 3:13last year, last summer, even reach out to me and tell me that
- 3:16they're PR ING right now too. Just so many great wins.
- 3:19I love when people, regardless of how long we work together or
- 3:22not, like continue to update me on their wins.
- 3:24It's just a lot of fun. So been having a lot of that
- 3:26recently and just really excited for everybody.
- 3:28I love it. It's a good time of year for not
- 3:30for me, but for everybody else. That's and that's totally fine
- 3:33with me. That's my love.
- 3:35Here is just later. It's fine, it's fine.
- 3:36It's fine. No, but like, I think it's so
- 3:38fun and I, I don't hopefully I articulate this properly, but I
- 3:42feel like it's so fun. Like once people get their
- 3:44period back and then they start to really focus on like the
- 3:48sports nutrition and performance side of it.
- 3:50And not like that we let that go and period recovery, just a
- 3:53different focus. Like most of our athletes
- 3:54continue to train while we work with them, but like that move
- 3:58from like period or recovery into like performance.
- 4:01I don't know if I'm saying this right.
- 4:02Do you know what I'm? I guess do you get what I'm
- 4:04saying when I say? That no, exactly.
- 4:06I always feel like I say that with athletes that I work with
- 4:09and specifically runners, because that's mainly who I work
- 4:11with where I'm like, oh, this is the fun part of your fuelling.
- 4:14Like we get to like be very like strategic about how we lead into
- 4:17race day and like talk about all those things that maybe we
- 4:20weren't talking about as much. Maybe I guess is the best way to
- 4:23say it when we were having when we just had a different fuelling
- 4:25focus. Yeah.
- 4:26Because, you know, we can't do any of that fun timing stuff
- 4:30when you don't just have the basics down and you don't have a
- 4:32good foundation down. Yeah, so just super exciting, a
- 4:35lot of fun right now. Yay, yay.
- 4:36To all your clients, what's your low?
- 4:38I think that was such a good high.
- 4:40What's your low? I know this is such like a
- 4:43ridiculous low, but I have to share it.
- 4:45This is the What Drives Us Bananas episode.
- 4:47So we're sharing about things that like just drive us bananas
- 4:50anyway. And this got me baseline, but
- 4:52it's not anything nutrition related.
- 4:54In the past week, Riley, I have been pooped on by a bird not
- 4:59one, but twice. Jenna, you and the Arizona
- 5:02Nature just. And I'm not kidding, I'm not
- 5:05making this up. One time I was out running and
- 5:07it got me and bless my sweet husband was like, here's my
- 5:12T-shirt wiping this off of you. We will carry on.
- 5:15He is a gem of a human. Unfortunately, the second time I
- 5:19was leaving somewhere and I was walking on the sidewalk
- 5:22underneath some trees on my way back to my car and I got pooped
- 5:26on again and I had nothing. I had no no husband to help me.
- 5:30It was. It was hurt.
- 5:30There's like no trees in Arizona I.
- 5:32Know. How do you find the two birds
- 5:34this? Is just my luck with animals,
- 5:36you guys. I am not right with the animal
- 5:38world. Something is out of sync,
- 5:41something is out of, I don't know.
- 5:43I am just constantly in retrograde with animals I guess.
- 5:45How does that happen? Two times in one week?
- 5:48I can't make that up. I don't think some people have
- 5:50been like pooped on two times in their life.
- 5:53Yeah, two times in one week. Don't worry.
- 5:55Setting the record over here, if it happens 1/3 time I might go
- 5:57buy a lottery ticket, I don't know.
- 5:59You should. You should.
- 6:00You are a very lucky person. You should.
- 6:01But yeah, that's my low. That's that's what happened to
- 6:05me this week. And you know, it's like this
- 6:06gross. It's so gross.
- 6:08Like I'm not hurt, but just how disgusting is that?
- 6:11I just I by osmosis. I'm grossed out too.
- 6:15Yeah, so anyway, I feel like I had to share that because I was
- 6:17like the first time it happened, I was like, no way.
- 6:19And I was like, well, at least I have a low for the podcast.
- 6:21And then the second time happened, which was yesterday, I
- 6:24was like, no way. I was like, I already had my
- 6:27low. I didn't need it.
- 6:28I didn't need this again, but the birds here had other plans.
- 6:31It really. Does help our negative
- 6:33situations though because I'm like at least I can talk about
- 6:36this as a little on the podcast. I think my favorite part about
- 6:39it is because we don't share it beforehand is like the response
- 6:43I get from you, which is always like we're laughing about it
- 6:45now, which makes me feel so much better about the situation.
- 6:48I'm promise I'm having with you. Not at you too, no.
- 6:50Of course, yes, but that's the best way to like get through a
- 6:53situation like that. So anyway, without further ado,
- 6:56here's our what drives us bananas for March?
- 6:58The things that we have found, as always, we'd love to hear
- 7:01from you, the things that you saw that drove you bananas.
- 7:03Today we have myself, Lily, and Riley to talk about all of the
- 7:06things that we saw online this week that drove us absolutely
- 7:09bananas. I love these episodes you guys.
- 7:11Yep, can't wait to get upset. Things that are going on in the
- 7:15world, we get a little heated on these, but it's fun.
- 7:18Lily, do you want to go first this week?
- 7:19Yes, I will. I feel like a lot of our topics
- 7:22recently have been very much about like GLP, one talk, body
- 7:26talk, things like that. I'm switching up the topic.
- 7:29There's an egg controversy going on right now.
- 7:32I don't know if you guys have. Seen it?
- 7:34About Vital Farms, have you guys seen anything about this?
- 7:37I know Vital Farms, they're like the egg cartoons that are like
- 7:39$12.00, right? Yes, yeah, exactly.
- 7:42Can you give us a summary? I'm not aware.
- 7:44Can you give us a cook summary? Yes, yes, I will.
- 7:46So Vital Farms, yes, Jenna's right.
- 7:48They are the like super duper expensive eggs that look like
- 7:53very like they would be good for you.
- 7:55They have their marketing down and that's what's driving me
- 7:58bananas is food marketing because a study just came out
- 8:01that says that their eggs have high levels of poofas or Omega
- 8:06sixes, which is throwing the organic crowd into a rage.
- 8:12Everyone's so upset. They're saying that they're
- 8:14boycotting these eggs, blah blah blah, which I am not opposed to
- 8:18poofas or Omega sixes or whatever.
- 8:20But it's the fact that this brand has prided themselves on
- 8:23marketing their eggs to look so greenwashed, as we would say,
- 8:28and that they appear like they are the best of the best.
- 8:32When in reality, if you don't know about egg labeling, it's
- 8:36very complicated. And nowhere on their packaging
- 8:39does it say that their chickens are grass fed, which everyone
- 8:42just assumed because there's grass on their carton.
- 8:45Poova's Omega sixes, that's the big controversy was seed oil.
- 8:49Seed oils, yes. Too many Omega sixes and it's
- 8:52all about the Omega 6 to omega-3 ratio and I'm sure the ratio is
- 8:56off in the eggs now. Yep, yes, it's the egg end of
- 9:00the world right now. And I mean, if you're going out
- 9:03of your way to buy $12.00 cartoons of eggs, I think I
- 9:06would be upset too if I found out it wasn't what I wanted.
- 9:08But it's just how they marketed it.
- 9:11They never said that they didn't feed their chickens corn and
- 9:15soy. They never said that they just
- 9:17had grass on their cartoons. So.
- 9:19I actually think that like this brings up a really good point
- 9:23because I was talking about this as a client the other day and we
- 9:27have really stopped thinking about the why and like asking
- 9:31why. And we're just taking things now
- 9:33like face value. And I feel like we've lost
- 9:35critical thinking skills. Like not to get into this whole
- 9:37thing about it, but like, is it because of AI in touch?
- 9:41Like are we just super trustworthy now?
- 9:43Because, like, if marketing looks OK or if somebody online
- 9:46says something's OK because things are so much more nuanced
- 9:49and like, we've stopped asking why.
- 9:51It's like, you see a reel and you're like, Oh yeah, that's
- 9:53true. And then you see the next reel
- 9:54and it completely contradicts and you're like, oh wait, that's
- 9:57true. And then you just keep going.
- 9:58So interesting how the mind works for determining whether or
- 10:02not something is trustworthy or not.
- 10:03Like the carton of Vital Farms eggs, it does look like it has a
- 10:07look to it where you look at and you're like, wow.
- 10:10Like that is so different from like the Styrofoam carton of
- 10:13eggs that you can get from like the, you know, grocery store
- 10:16brand or whatever. And in your mind because of
- 10:19that, it looks like this like homegrown, you know, Sally went
- 10:22out to the backyard and picked up eggs from her chicken coop
- 10:25and now they're in your local store.
- 10:27Because of that, we've determined that is more
- 10:29trustworthy or better for us. And it's interesting how the
- 10:31same thing happens when people are online because there are
- 10:34certain influencers that they have deemed as trustworthy and
- 10:37certain influencers that they have deemed as untrustworthy.
- 10:40And a lot of it might be confirmation bias as far as if
- 10:43you start to believe something and then you see an influencer
- 10:46talk or post about it, then you're like, Oh yes, this is
- 10:48totally true. Or it might be the opposite.
- 10:50And it's really interesting, like the psychology of it, which
- 10:53is, I mean, as dietitians, we take undergraduate courses in
- 10:55psychology, but none of us have degrees or pH DS in psychology.
- 10:59But it's really interesting to see how the marketing and how
- 11:02our brains work from a trust perspective when it comes to all
- 11:05of those things. And because Vital Farms did an
- 11:07incredible job with marketing, people deemed them a trustworthy
- 11:10company. Yep, it is pretty funny seeing
- 11:13all the posts that are really up in arms about the Omega sixes in
- 11:16their eggs. I'm so excited to talk about
- 11:18mine because I think mine really correlates with yours, Lily.
- 11:21And I don't want to jump into mine yet, but I think people do
- 11:24forget that like hoofas, Omega sixes are an essential fatty
- 11:27acid like it is. Essential, yes.
- 11:30That being in your eggs it's OK, but I wouldn't pay $12.00 for
- 11:34any carton of eggs either, so maybe just buy the regular.
- 11:37Eggs. I'm not going to lie, I'm
- 11:38looking for the cheapest one. Literally.
- 11:39Eggs are so expensive. So expensive, Riley, what is
- 11:42driving you bananas? I think mine really kind of
- 11:45parallel past what Lily is was talking about where like there's
- 11:48trust with marketing because I have seen a lot of this kind of
- 11:53that less like first quarter of the year where everybody is
- 11:56talking about the diets that they're on to lose weight.
- 12:00And the way that they're selling their diet is by taking a
- 12:03picture of themselves. And I'm just so frustrated by
- 12:07it. Like I'm so frustrated by it
- 12:09because they will talk about things that have worked for them
- 12:13and how they were to lose weight.
- 12:15And as somebody who's educated in the space, I know they're
- 12:18saying the wrong thing and it's just driving me bananas because
- 12:21people are going to try it and it's not going to work and
- 12:23people are going to get confused.
- 12:25I'm pretty confident half of these people that are promoting
- 12:27these special diets that they're on or they're 200 gram protein
- 12:30diet are also on a GOP and we're not going to get into GO PS I
- 12:34don't think today. But I'm just so tired of it
- 12:37because the marketing is so good and these people are so
- 12:40trustworthy. They're selling themselves and
- 12:43how they look and basically saying, hey, if you eat like me,
- 12:46you'll look like me and I'm over it.
- 12:48Freaking over. It I know that we have talked
- 12:50about this multiple times in the past, but how much frustration
- 12:53it brings when we see somebody online who's using their body as
- 12:56a billboard? Because even if Riley, Lily and
- 13:00myself for all to eat the exact same way and all to train the
- 13:03exact same way, we would still look different.
- 13:06What happens is athletes come to us and they're confused on why
- 13:10their favorite influencer looks a certain way and they're
- 13:13healthy with air quotes and they can eat 200 grams of protein and
- 13:17I'm telling them we need to cut that protein amount in half.
- 13:20Then they put us in a bad spot because again, like, we're not
- 13:23going to promise results off of something that's incorrect.
- 13:26Yeah. And with the protein thing
- 13:30specifically, I think that it's always been a really big thing,
- 13:33but we do see a lot of our clients and stuff when they
- 13:36first start out pretty much always overeating protein.
- 13:39I haven't met a person in this day and age, period recovery or
- 13:42not, who probably is under eating protein.
- 13:45We have such a focus on it as a society and in cases of
- 13:50reversing low energy availability and really trying
- 13:53to get our periods back, we want to be focusing on things like
- 13:56carbs and fat. And so usually the first step is
- 13:59to cut down protein to make room for more carbs and fat.
- 14:03And that's a really hard thing when the whole world is
- 14:06screaming at you to drink protein shakes and to choose the
- 14:10option that's high protein. I recently have had to cut out
- 14:14the Fairlife shakes out of my daily thing because I get them
- 14:17at Costco and it's the 30 gram protein, whatever, but there's
- 14:20no carbs in it. And I'm like, OK, that doesn't
- 14:22match my goals. So like little things like that,
- 14:25it's just everywhere. I saw this like joke online.
- 14:27It was a meme, but it was really funny 'cause they were making
- 14:30fun of like an influencer who had talked about their new
- 14:34butternut squash soup or something that had a secret
- 14:36ingredient to help you get to 30 grams of protein for the serving
- 14:39of soup. And it was a scoop of protein
- 14:41powder in the soup. Yeah, literally.
- 14:43They're like it's unflavored, just add it in.
- 14:45I think going off of the point that you bring up Lily with like
- 14:49protein, every single athlete that comes and works with us, we
- 14:51do a three day food log. We know kind of what intake
- 14:54looks like before we meet with them the first time.
- 14:56And then on our first session, we do like sports nutrition one
- 14:59O 1 where we're going through. Why is this important for you in
- 15:01comparison to what you're currently doing?
- 15:03What white we we need to do as first steps to get you towards
- 15:06your end goals and the number of people that when I review
- 15:09protein, what protein's role in the body is the importance of
- 15:12protein and all of that, despite prefacing it with protein has a
- 15:15little bit of a Halo. Most of us are getting plenty.
- 15:17Usually at the end of that, when I say like, what questions do we
- 15:20have? They say I probably need more
- 15:21protein, Huh. It's just ingrained in our brain
- 15:25that protein is this great solve for so many things that are
- 15:28going on. And yeah, protein does a lot of
- 15:30great things for our body, but it's not the only nutrient that
- 15:33we need. We have 60 central nutrients.
- 15:35We have so many things that our body needs.
- 15:37You have so many specific things that you need as a runner, as an
- 15:39athlete, as human that are more than just protein.
- 15:42Yeah. And I also think there's a big
- 15:43misconception on how hard it is is to get enough protein in your
- 15:47diet. Like the serving size for
- 15:49protein, Like it's so much smaller than people think.
- 15:52If you eat animal products and you have like, some sort of meat
- 15:56at every meal, you're probably pretty Dang close to how much
- 16:00protein you need in that day. Like you might need to adjust
- 16:03some things in your snacks and things like that, but it's not
- 16:06as hard as influencers like to make it out to sea.
- 16:09My favorite is like, I'm like how many grams of protein does
- 16:12half a cup of oats have in it? And people are like, none.
- 16:16And I'm like, it has like 6 to 7 grams of protein.
- 16:18Like we don't need to add protein powder to your oat bowl
- 16:22because you make it with milk, you add seeds, you add peanut
- 16:25butter. Like you're going to be at 20
- 16:27grams of protein very, very quickly.
- 16:29I think we, because we correlate animal products only with
- 16:32sources of protein that people think that that's the only way
- 16:35you can get protein in besides maybe a protein powder that your
- 16:37favorite Instagram influencer has told you.
- 16:39But most of our foods overlap with what they have in them.
- 16:43Like Riley just mentioned, grains, oatmeal, meals, breads,
- 16:46they all have protein in them. It's part of the piece of bread
- 16:50is protein. Protein.
- 16:52Is driving us bananas. This is why this is the Eat More
- 16:55Carbs podcast, not Eat More Protein podcast.
- 16:57So if you were hoping for advice on increasing your protein
- 17:00intake, it's not us. But we'll help you get your
- 17:02period back, so it's. Actually really goes into my
- 17:04what drives me bananas this week.
- 17:05So we did a great job with like tying these all together because
- 17:09my, what drives me bananas this week is that I am so sick and so
- 17:14over healthy quote UN quote desserts.
- 17:17There is nothing wrong with enjoying the foods that you like
- 17:21to enjoy. But if I see one more person who
- 17:24is making cottage cheese into ice cream or taking buckwheat
- 17:28and turning it into homemade Oreos or something like that,
- 17:30like I I, I just can't. Mad about trying to increase
- 17:35nutrient quality and quality of food, right?
- 17:38I'm all about that. But like a doughnut is a
- 17:40doughnut. You're a mashed banana with
- 17:42protein power that you put and baked is not a doughnut.
- 17:45Literally some of these things that I see, it makes me almost
- 17:48queasy because I'm like, I know Riley and I've talked about this
- 17:50before, but like when we see certain things that we've tried
- 17:53in the past, back when like maybe we had some disordered
- 17:56patterns with food, it like hits a part of our brain somewhere.
- 17:59I'm like, I can't even look at that and be like, yeah, I'm
- 18:01going to mix sugar free pudding together with a low fat yogurt
- 18:05and then stir in a ton of protein powder because I know
- 18:08how that tastes. And that's not something that I
- 18:11want to enjoy in my fueling patterns.
- 18:13Like if I want a yogurt bowl or if I want ice cream, like I want
- 18:16it to taste enjoyable for me. And to me that's not at all
- 18:20enjoyable. And I don't think that we need
- 18:22to take everything that we're eating and make it a quote UN
- 18:24quote. Health food, like all food fits.
- 18:26And we can have places for things that aren't necessarily
- 18:29like a health branded spin on something like we can just enjoy
- 18:32food. It's OK to do that.
- 18:34And they always are. Like it tastes exactly the same,
- 18:37all of them. They all are like it tastes the
- 18:39same. It's like you're having the real
- 18:41thing. And it's like there's no way.
- 18:43Like have you actually had Oreos?
- 18:45Because I guarantee there's more days to.
- 18:47Say my biggest problem though, is it reinforces that things are
- 18:50good and things are bad. Like it reinforces that dessert
- 18:53is bad and we have to figure out how we can make it good.
- 18:56And like, food is not morally good or bad, and we have got to
- 19:00stop that rhetoric. Oh my gosh, yes.
- 19:01There is no morality in food. You've talked about before how
- 19:05Charlie eats ice cream and you give her the option of ice cream
- 19:07and berries together and it's less of a big deal because it's
- 19:11just another fueling product. And she might have a couple
- 19:13bites of the ice cream and then go for the berries or vice
- 19:15versa. But it's just part of her
- 19:16fueling. It's not something that's like
- 19:18this. Oh my gosh, like we can't have
- 19:19that. It's not part of our fueling.
- 19:21It's not part of our routine because it's bad.
- 19:23It's another way to. Fuel so I'm continuously
- 19:25surprised with her like food choices too like we on
- 19:27Wednesdays we have gymnastics like baby gymnastics so we
- 19:30always go to Chick-fil-A afterwards because it's that
- 19:32dinner time Rob's and I are both there.
- 19:33We don't have time to prep food, so we always go to Chick-fil-A
- 19:36and I'll always like plate chicken, some fries, some fruit
- 19:40and some vegetable. And like, sometimes she doesn't
- 19:43even care about the chicken and the fries, like, and most of the
- 19:46time people would be like, she's only going to eat the chicken
- 19:47and the fries. And it's like, it's literally
- 19:49just a component of the plate, like the fruit and.
- 19:51Vegetables I loved learning about like, nutrition through
- 19:54the life cycle because it's so interesting that kids do a
- 19:56really great job of like regulating their hunger and
- 19:59understanding, like what they want to eat.
- 20:01And it's less pressure because they're haven't labeled food at
- 20:04that point in time as like a good food or a bad food.
- 20:07It's just food for them. And I wish that that's how it
- 20:10remained for everybody. But Instagram influencers are
- 20:12telling us that instead, we need to avoid Vital Farms eggs.
- 20:16Or eggs in general. And there's good foods and
- 20:18there's bad foods. And I disagree with that.
- 20:20We did a good. Job today planning our what
- 20:23drives us bananas. They all went nicely together if
- 20:25y'all couldn't guess, but we have no idea what each other
- 20:29things are driving each other bananas, which I love.
