- 0:01Speaker 1: You're listening to Hawk Talk with former Seahawks wide receiver
- 0:05Speaker 1: Michael Bumps at the ten yard live second and eight
- 0:08Speaker 1: free wide receivers now in motion as Bumpas left to right,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Julius Jones. A single setback Matt pump fakes looking at
- 0:14Speaker 1: the goal line. He throws it into the end zone.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Touchdown Seahawks. It's Michael Bumpas with a diving catch in
- 0:21Speaker 1: the end zone. Our ten yard touchdown reception for Puppas
- 0:25Speaker 1: and the kid out of Washington State has found himself
- 0:28Speaker 1: a place on this team powered by Seahawks dot Com.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Out of his shotgun is Pennington. Tight end is flex
- 0:35Speaker 1: to the far side, so it makes four receivers split
- 0:38Speaker 1: out on third and ten. Pennington, as time has to
- 0:41Speaker 1: step up his head still drills falls intercepted. It's Jordan Babbado.
- 0:45Speaker 1: The twenty fifteen ten Seahawks are on the board. Touchdown Seahawks.
- 0:52Speaker 1: What a folks, this is Michael Bump is with NASA
- 0:55Speaker 1: Choby Hot talking today. We got the author Big Play,
- 1:00Speaker 1: Jordan Babineau joining us today. Babbs, how you doing man,
- 1:03Speaker 1: Mike Bump what's going on? NASA? Thanks guys, you know
- 1:06Speaker 1: it's good to be doing it in the offseason. Thanks
- 1:09Speaker 1: for having me on. Hey, thanks for taking time out
- 1:12Speaker 1: of your day. We got some things we want to
- 1:14Speaker 1: talk to Babs about on the back end, but before
- 1:16Speaker 1: we get to that, let's talk about the Seattle Seahawks
- 1:19Speaker 1: and what has happened since the season has ended. See
- 1:22Speaker 1: what had happened at first? What had happened was unhardoc
- 1:30Speaker 1: first thing that happened. New offensive coordinator Shane Waldron is
- 1:34Speaker 1: in the house. He was the passing game coordinator for
- 1:37Speaker 1: the Rams, and he brought his boy, Andy Dickerson with him,
- 1:40Speaker 1: who was the run game coordinator. So pretty much safe
- 1:43Speaker 1: to say we're gonna see some Rams offense in the
- 1:46Speaker 1: Seattle offense next year now. Also, Russell Wilson has been
- 1:49Speaker 1: named Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, Greg Olsen,
- 1:53Speaker 1: Mike you Potty retired, Jamal Adams has surgery. kJ Right
- 1:57Speaker 1: nominated for a Seattle Sports Star of the Year. A
- 1:59Speaker 1: lot has happened, But Babs, I want to ask you
- 2:01Speaker 1: about the offensive coordinate to hire. Was this necessary? Do
- 2:05Speaker 1: you like the hire? Well? In terms of necessary, absolutely,
- 2:08Speaker 1: they had to feel that void um certainly after partying
- 2:11Speaker 1: ways with Shoddy who I thought, you know, did a
- 2:14Speaker 1: pretty good job of navigating this offense and getting UM
- 2:18Speaker 1: at least the first half of the season some sparks flying.
- 2:21Speaker 1: I mean, I mean this offense was just high powered
- 2:23Speaker 1: and Russell Wilson was playing, you know, at a high level. Um.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Now what happened on you know, the second half and
- 2:30Speaker 1: we're into what had happened section? Um. You know, certainly,
- 2:35Speaker 1: um still being able to win as many games as
- 2:37Speaker 1: they did, didn't perform as well and for whatever reason,
- 2:41Speaker 1: certainly when you talk about a Pet Carol offense, he's
- 2:45Speaker 1: all about run first. You know, he wants to run
- 2:47Speaker 1: that football. UM. And I think in many ways offensively, um,
- 2:53Speaker 1: you know, the Hawks kind of put themselves in, you know,
- 2:56Speaker 1: bad situations, you know, going from first and second went
- 3:00Speaker 1: in first and second down as well as they did
- 3:02Speaker 1: in the first half of the season, and putting themselves
- 3:04Speaker 1: in third and long situations on third down, and you know,
- 3:09Speaker 1: or running back like Chris Carson and the ability to
- 3:13Speaker 1: have Russell Wilson skill set, I think sometimes they got
- 3:17Speaker 1: away from their cores. Whether it was Russell you know,
- 3:21Speaker 1: wanting to to you know, improvise on the run or
- 3:24Speaker 1: not taking the check down or you know, not running
- 3:27Speaker 1: the ball and what would have been running situations. So
- 3:31Speaker 1: moving away from being too predictable in the offense, they
- 3:35Speaker 1: lost their identity a little bit offensively in the second
- 3:37Speaker 1: half of the season, and we saw saw the offense
- 3:40Speaker 1: sputter a little bit. Now what we did see was
- 3:42Speaker 1: that defense get better. So that was and there was
- 3:45Speaker 1: some some bonus, I mean some some good that happened
- 3:47Speaker 1: in the second half of the season. So the good
- 3:50Speaker 1: was the defense getting better than bad was the way
- 3:53Speaker 1: the offense kind of limped into the playoffs and kind
- 3:55Speaker 1: of caught up to them. So now they got a
- 3:56Speaker 1: new coordinator. If you were Shane Waldron, what's priority Well,
- 4:00Speaker 1: what's the first thing you want to do when you
- 4:02Speaker 1: get into the building? Well, I mean you and I
- 4:05Speaker 1: both have been reading the headlines, and Russell Wilson seems
- 4:08Speaker 1: that priority number one is addressing the offensive line. And
- 4:12Speaker 1: you probably you know, look at the offensive line. In
- 4:15Speaker 1: my opinion, I thought the offensive line was, you know,
- 4:18Speaker 1: probably one of the better units that Russell has had,
- 4:21Speaker 1: you know, um in the last few years. The most
- 4:26Speaker 1: I would say probably questionable position was um, you know,
- 4:29Speaker 1: seeing justin Brick get hurt, you know, at the center position,
- 4:32Speaker 1: so they they had a change there. The left guard position.
- 4:35Speaker 1: They were working out working with Mike you potty, but
- 4:39Speaker 1: he's older now and now that he's retired. Um, certainly,
- 4:42Speaker 1: that's to me probably question mark, um, you know, in
- 4:46Speaker 1: filling that void. But across the board, I thought offensive
- 4:50Speaker 1: the offensive line was was you know, pretty pretty solid
- 4:54Speaker 1: in terms of where they finished. Um. But the running
- 4:58Speaker 1: back position is something that I think you'd see, you know,
- 5:02Speaker 1: take a heavy look at as well. Carson. I believe
- 5:05Speaker 1: he is a free agent and you know, wanting to
- 5:08Speaker 1: run the football, and having looked at the success that
- 5:10Speaker 1: the Rams have had in the past with running the football.
- 5:14Speaker 1: You know, we saw what happened in the playoff game,
- 5:16Speaker 1: in the wild card playoff game, we know that the
- 5:18Speaker 1: running game is gonna be a heavy emphasis in his offseason. Well,
- 5:22Speaker 1: here's a good thing, Babs. Shane Waldron has been the
- 5:25Speaker 1: league for eight years, coaching experience. He's coach on the
- 5:28Speaker 1: Belichick Sean McVay, so he's got some great examples of
- 5:31Speaker 1: what winning looks like. Now. I heard him speak as well,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and he seems like balanced to him means doing the
- 5:37Speaker 1: right thing at the right time, not necessarily fifty percent run,
- 5:40Speaker 1: fifty percent passes. What is his defense giving you and
- 5:43Speaker 1: taking advantage of that. You talk about balance because Shane
- 5:45Speaker 1: Waldron has done I think the big part about when
- 5:49Speaker 1: he came in here is talking about what is he
- 5:50Speaker 1: gonna do. People want to talk about the identity, and
- 5:52Speaker 1: you hit on balance when you spoke with him earlier
- 5:54Speaker 1: on Hawk Talk and also when he spoke to seventeen
- 5:56Speaker 1: YESPM with Danny Gallant. And here's this a little snid
- 5:58Speaker 1: bit of what he said when he talks about balance
- 6:00Speaker 1: on offense, but also not being conservative just because it's
- 6:03Speaker 1: you know, I'm saying that it's a balance attack doesn't
- 6:06Speaker 1: mean that that's a conservative attack. So I don't ever
- 6:09Speaker 1: want to get that confused. So that'll really be the
- 6:12Speaker 1: you know, the core philosophy that we live by as
- 6:14Speaker 1: far as the starting point with you know, run versus
- 6:18Speaker 1: pass versus you know, any other schematic things we want
- 6:21Speaker 1: to get into. We want to be we want to
- 6:23Speaker 1: have that balanced approach. So when you talk about balance,
- 6:26Speaker 1: bump in basket both Guessen jump in here. We've talked
- 6:29Speaker 1: about this a lot in the prem post game show,
- 6:30Speaker 1: right balance. People think balanced, fifty percent run, fifty percent pass, right,
- 6:34Speaker 1: but we know that's not what it's about. And I
- 6:35Speaker 1: think it's really comforting to hear Shane talk about balance
- 6:38Speaker 1: and what that's going to mean to him. So when
- 6:40Speaker 1: he comes in here, Babs, what do you want to
- 6:42Speaker 1: see from a balance standpoint in the Seahawks offense? Yeah?
- 6:47Speaker 1: So I think and maybe DK may have been the
- 6:51Speaker 1: one that said that. At some point it seems like
- 6:53Speaker 1: the defense had a clear idea of what the offense
- 6:56Speaker 1: was running that they became too predictable at times. Um.
- 7:00Speaker 1: You know, balance attack is exactly that. I like that idea.
- 7:04Speaker 1: It's not running into the eight man boxes just to
- 7:06Speaker 1: prove a point or be aggressive. Now, certainly if it's
- 7:08Speaker 1: four minute offense and we need to run the football,
- 7:11Speaker 1: you know, to run the clock out to get to
- 7:13Speaker 1: get to win. UM. Different, But it sounds like what
- 7:16Speaker 1: Waldron is discussed in a situational football. And you know,
- 7:20Speaker 1: given Russell the ability to make those checks at the
- 7:23Speaker 1: line of scrimmage based on what the defense has given them,
- 7:26Speaker 1: it makes sense to run into a four I mean
- 7:28Speaker 1: a seven man box, even though a pass may have
- 7:31Speaker 1: been called. Um, but I'd like to see. And something
- 7:34Speaker 1: that I've that I've seen quite a bit with the
- 7:36Speaker 1: Rams offense is that their quarterback Golf was under center
- 7:40Speaker 1: quite a bit more. And you know, instead of running
- 7:43Speaker 1: the ball out of the offense, UM always out of
- 7:46Speaker 1: the gun. UM could be something that we see Russell
- 7:48Speaker 1: under center a little bit more. When I think of balance,
- 7:53Speaker 1: I think of I just put myself in that Rams
- 7:57Speaker 1: film room. You got two tight ends. One tight end
- 8:00Speaker 1: five hundred yards, one tight didn't have six hundred yards.
- 8:02Speaker 1: You got three receivers over six seven hundred yards as well,
- 8:06Speaker 1: and you got three running backs who are getting it done.
- 8:08Speaker 1: You protect a quarterback in golf who was only sacked
- 8:11Speaker 1: twenty sometimes bad as that dude ain't mobile, but he
- 8:13Speaker 1: only sacked twenty sometimes, And that shows to me balance
- 8:17Speaker 1: in the offense. All the stats side has ran off,
- 8:19Speaker 1: plus Jared Golf not being sacked a lot shows balance
- 8:23Speaker 1: to me. So now we talked about Russell Wilson, Man
- 8:26Speaker 1: of the Year kJ Seattle Sports Star. You got an
- 8:29Speaker 1: offensive coordinator coming in here, Shane Waldron. What else should
- 8:34Speaker 1: we be optimistic about? Why should we be optimistic that
- 8:37Speaker 1: the Seahawks are gonna have a good season. Let me
- 8:39Speaker 1: remind folks, they were twelve and four, still had a
- 8:40Speaker 1: good season, but we want more. So why why should
- 8:43Speaker 1: we be optimistic? Wow? Well you speak for all Seahawks fans. Man.
- 8:47Speaker 1: You guys are greedy. Man. You know, twelve wins is
- 8:50Speaker 1: not good enough. Man, that's not you know, because you
- 8:56Speaker 1: know the reason is is that you know, I think
- 8:59Speaker 1: that first I'll say that, Um, you know, the Russell
- 9:02Speaker 1: Wilson talk. Uh, you know, it's more so like you know,
- 9:06Speaker 1: two brothers arguing over the last dinner roll. You know, um,
- 9:11Speaker 1: you know, look, we'll bake more, you know, Um, well
- 9:15Speaker 1: we'll get more dinner roles on the table. Guys, come on,
- 9:18Speaker 1: um and and you know, but but because of that,
- 9:22Speaker 1: you know what with coach Carol and um Russell Wilson combination. Um,
- 9:27Speaker 1: if you look at the history, I mean, why why
- 9:29Speaker 1: would you believe anything different than these two are able
- 9:32Speaker 1: to put together another winning season and then offensively being
- 9:36Speaker 1: able to add you know, a weapon and a head
- 9:38Speaker 1: coach like the new offensive coordinator and Walter and that
- 9:41Speaker 1: we just hired. Um it immediately, at least on surface
- 9:46Speaker 1: on paper, right now, you would say that the offense
- 9:49Speaker 1: has improved because of you know, the success that we've
- 9:53Speaker 1: seen over the course of the last few years with
- 9:55Speaker 1: the Rams offense. And anyone who's watched the NFC West
- 9:59Speaker 1: and why watch the Seattle Seahawks battle to La Rams
- 10:02Speaker 1: in the past, understand that that has always been a
- 10:05Speaker 1: tough matchup for the Seahawks, and not just because they
- 10:08Speaker 1: their their defense is as good and certainly their defense
- 10:11Speaker 1: got a lot better last year. And of course, if
- 10:13Speaker 1: you got the best defensive player in the game, and
- 10:15Speaker 1: Aaron Donald, I mean, you know, he can cause havoc
- 10:18Speaker 1: to any offense. But but everything that you mentioned from
- 10:21Speaker 1: a balance attack and uh, their their receivers and their
- 10:24Speaker 1: tight ends having success in throwing the football. Jared Goff,
- 10:28Speaker 1: you know who's no longer in LA but even still
- 10:31Speaker 1: has had a lot of success early in his career,
- 10:34Speaker 1: suggest that this offense will make improvements. Um. And then
- 10:37Speaker 1: you match Pete Carroll, uh and you you know, as
- 10:41Speaker 1: the leader of this of this team. UM, I'm willing
- 10:45Speaker 1: to bet that this team gets back to the playoffs.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Now what they do when they get there, Um, obviously
- 10:49Speaker 1: that's that's a different season when you move from the
- 10:51Speaker 1: regular season to the playoffs. But That's the reason that
- 10:54Speaker 1: I'm optimistic about this Hawks team, you know, really validating
- 10:59Speaker 1: this twelve when seas and that they just came off of.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I think, guys, there's so much to be optimistic for. Obviously,
- 11:04Speaker 1: the way it ended wasn't great, losing in the first
- 11:06Speaker 1: round of the lot of card playoffs last year. But
- 11:08Speaker 1: on the offensive side of the ball, DK Metcalf Entire
- 11:10Speaker 1: Lockett had two of the best seasons that have ever
- 11:13Speaker 1: been had as receivers in Seattle. Ever, you have a
- 11:15Speaker 1: new offensive coordinator can put his spin on it, stuff
- 11:18Speaker 1: he takes from the rams and throughout his career. Then
- 11:20Speaker 1: you got Damian Lewis. Damian Lewis is gonna be a
- 11:22Speaker 1: future All Pro at some point. Okay, he was in
- 11:25Speaker 1: All Rookie Pro Football Focus all that stuff last year.
- 11:27Speaker 1: So there's things to be a really excited about on offense.
- 11:30Speaker 1: And you flip it to defense. DJ Reid he came
- 11:33Speaker 1: in out of nowhere. He might be a starting corner
- 11:35Speaker 1: next year. Who knows about that. Jordan Brooks is a
- 11:37Speaker 1: young cat who stepped in and once he got to
- 11:39Speaker 1: see Wetton playing. So even with the guys that we
- 11:41Speaker 1: know we're under contract, they're coming back. There's a lot
- 11:43Speaker 1: to be optimistic about. Jamal Adams is going to be healthy,
- 11:46Speaker 1: coming out a year where he had nine and a
- 11:48Speaker 1: half sacks, said, an NFL record for defensive backs. I mean, guys,
- 11:52Speaker 1: so much look forward to I kind of just talking
- 11:54Speaker 1: about it. Guess me fired up, man, I'm ready for
- 11:56Speaker 1: training camp. Let's go bump, get us going, nass you
- 11:59Speaker 1: hear a pee? Well, be optimistic. All those reasons Nassas
- 12:03Speaker 1: lifted off right now. But now I'm gonna flip it
- 12:05Speaker 1: all right now, why should we be concerned? I'll give
- 12:08Speaker 1: you a couple of reasons why you can be concerned.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Chris Carson is a free agent. Shaq Griffin is a
- 12:14Speaker 1: free agent. Don't know what Carlos Dunlap's gonna do. They
- 12:17Speaker 1: gotta do some things on defense and kind of maintain
- 12:20Speaker 1: what you talked about, Babs, how they finished the regular
- 12:23Speaker 1: season when it came to the performance of this defense,
- 12:26Speaker 1: all right, we did the good side and that was
- 12:27Speaker 1: a bad side. Reason for us to concern any reason? Yeah,
- 12:31Speaker 1: I think the cornerback position, possibly the linebacker as well.
- 12:35Speaker 1: kJ Wright, man, I mean kJ is probably one of
- 12:38Speaker 1: you know, the favorite Seahawks of all time. The guy
- 12:42Speaker 1: is just selfless, a great player. In fact, I think,
- 12:45Speaker 1: you know, ten years in the NFL, this guy is
- 12:47Speaker 1: coming off his best season, you know, and when he
- 12:51Speaker 1: was asked to do less or or change his position
- 12:55Speaker 1: as the team was welcoming their their young rookie and
- 12:58Speaker 1: Jordan Brooks. The defensive line is going to get better. Um.
- 13:03Speaker 1: And you know, I guess just looking across the board, Um,
- 13:08Speaker 1: you know, from from that standpoint as well, is that
- 13:11Speaker 1: here's what I really hope Bump and and I know
- 13:13Speaker 1: the Twelves do as well. Getting the fans back into
- 13:17Speaker 1: the stadium next year, man, I mean that's huge. That
- 13:20Speaker 1: will be a huge lift. And certainly, um, you know,
- 13:23Speaker 1: it was just unfortunate that we had to, you know,
- 13:25Speaker 1: go through what we did last season, but man, we
- 13:28Speaker 1: played a full season, um, you know, in the middle
- 13:31Speaker 1: of the pandemic. So having the Twelves back in the
- 13:34Speaker 1: stadium would be would be amazing. Uh. And certainly there's
- 13:37Speaker 1: a lot of young rookies and a lot of young talent,
- 13:40Speaker 1: uh that that that will take this franchise over the
- 13:43Speaker 1: next few years. Um, you know, in being a competitive
- 13:47Speaker 1: franchise in the NFC West. Uh what stands out to you, Bump?
- 13:51Speaker 1: I mean the where the concerns, man concerns, Guys got
- 13:55Speaker 1: to get paid. Guys want to get paid, they should
- 13:58Speaker 1: get paid. And how many these guys are gonna be
- 13:59Speaker 1: able bringing back in the development of the young guys
- 14:02Speaker 1: behind them, which leads me to my next question there, Yeah,
- 14:06Speaker 1: who's gonna have a breakout season? I'm gonna name. I'm
- 14:08Speaker 1: just give you some names out of these guys, who
- 14:10Speaker 1: do you think has a breakout season for the Hawks?
- 14:12Speaker 1: All right? We got Marky's Blair, LJ. Calli or Jordan
- 14:15Speaker 1: Brooks poona Ford shot, Penny DJ Reid on the back end,
- 14:19Speaker 1: Jordan Simmons, Phil Haes, Haynes, Jamarco Jones cow Fuller. Who's
- 14:24Speaker 1: breaking out? Oh? Well, I know Marquis Blair coming off
- 14:29Speaker 1: of injury and man, he had you know, a tremendous
- 14:33Speaker 1: upside and and great plans for him. So I think
- 14:36Speaker 1: he I think he comes back with um, with the
- 14:39Speaker 1: vengeance and something to prove a chip on his shoulder. LJ. Carllier.
- 14:44Speaker 1: You know, we watched LJ rookie season battle injuries and
- 14:47Speaker 1: now his second year he was productive. You know, I'm
- 14:51Speaker 1: excited to see his growth as well. And then of
- 14:53Speaker 1: course Jordan Brooks and I know I talked specifically about
- 14:56Speaker 1: the defensive players right there, bump those little players that
- 14:59Speaker 1: up and watching man and those those young players right
- 15:02Speaker 1: there have the ability to be playmakers. And now it's
- 15:05Speaker 1: just going out and doing it and continuing to get
- 15:08Speaker 1: better at their roles. All right. I mean, for me,
- 15:12Speaker 1: when you talk about breakout players, there's a ton to
- 15:14Speaker 1: look at. LJ. Collier is the one that sticks out
- 15:16Speaker 1: to me. Right he was a former first round pick.
- 15:19Speaker 1: He got a lot of heat in Seattle because he
- 15:20Speaker 1: got hurt starting off right, so he'd missed all of
- 15:23Speaker 1: camp in twenty nineteen, was kind of slow getting along,
- 15:25Speaker 1: but last year it kind of came out and made
- 15:27Speaker 1: some play. He said, three sacks at over twenty tackles.
- 15:29Speaker 1: He was on Good Foot, Good Morning Football and NFL
- 15:32Speaker 1: Network this morning, and then he just talked about, hey,
- 15:34Speaker 1: like he kind of got his legs under him his
- 15:36Speaker 1: sophomore year, he's ready to go, and he said, hey,
- 15:38Speaker 1: I'm coming with it. In year three, he's boys to
- 15:41Speaker 1: have a breakout season. I think it's there. I think
- 15:43Speaker 1: the improvement on defensive line with Jaron Reid, and he
- 15:46Speaker 1: added Carlos Stunlap. I think in year three he's finally
- 15:49Speaker 1: gonna get you know, he knows what it's like to
- 15:50Speaker 1: be your pro now. So LJ. Collier for me, is
- 15:53Speaker 1: a guy. I think it's finally going to come out
- 15:54Speaker 1: and be that first round pick that all Seahawk fans
- 15:57Speaker 1: and twelves wanted him to be. And I think he's
- 15:59Speaker 1: finally gonna do that. Next, I'm going with Marquis Blair. Baby, okay,
- 16:03Speaker 1: shining before he got hurt, he was shining. Man. That
- 16:05Speaker 1: hurt my heart seeing the yinst to go down because yeah,
- 16:07Speaker 1: he seemed, he seemed versatile, he was a safety. They
- 16:10Speaker 1: started play him in that nickel spot. I even think
- 16:12Speaker 1: he can be a serviceable corner at some point in
- 16:15Speaker 1: his career. I'm looking at my guy, Marky's Blair. All right, Now,
- 16:20Speaker 1: let's talk about the NFC West. What's the word in
- 16:23Speaker 1: the West now and the Seahawks or the NFC West
- 16:30Speaker 1: champs again, what's the word in the West? On Hawk talk?
- 16:37Speaker 1: What's the word in the West. I'll tell you what
- 16:38Speaker 1: the word is. The Hawks run a division twelve and four,
- 16:42Speaker 1: the Rams ten and six, Arizona finished eight and eight,
- 16:45Speaker 1: started off hot, then they fizzled out a bit, and
- 16:47Speaker 1: the forty nine ers at six and ten was just
- 16:49Speaker 1: there to mess everybody's season up. Right, You didn't they
- 16:52Speaker 1: weren't a playoff team, but you knew that they can
- 16:54Speaker 1: jack some stuff up. So the word in the West
- 16:57Speaker 1: is the Hawks get the banner, but the Rams get
- 16:59Speaker 1: some revenge in the playoffs, which is unfortunate overall. Phil
- 17:03Speaker 1: of the NFC West right now, Babs, Yeah, it's still
- 17:08Speaker 1: gonna be competitive. I think it's still one of the
- 17:11Speaker 1: most competitive divisions in the NFCU. You look across the quarterback.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Now the Rams no longer half golf, but they bring
- 17:19Speaker 1: in Matthew Stafford, and while he's never had success in
- 17:22Speaker 1: the playoffs, I mean he's been a machine and putting
- 17:25Speaker 1: up numbers and passing and throwing the ball all across
- 17:28Speaker 1: the field. So I think they'll still be, you know,
- 17:31Speaker 1: continue to be challenged by this this La Rams rival.
- 17:36Speaker 1: You have Kyler Murray on the other side for the Cardinals,
- 17:39Speaker 1: his girls, his development, and he's still a scary, scary
- 17:44Speaker 1: athlete man when he has the ball in his hands.
- 17:46Speaker 1: So the forty nine is probably you know, there's still
- 17:50Speaker 1: some question marks, you know, I mean there's a lot
- 17:52Speaker 1: of conversation of what they're if they're planning on parting
- 17:54Speaker 1: ways with their quarterback, but you just never know. But defensively,
- 17:59Speaker 1: they were a really really good football team. Even though
- 18:02Speaker 1: they lost their defensive coordinator. They're gonna have to, um,
- 18:05Speaker 1: you know, maybe find a way to to to fill
- 18:08Speaker 1: that void. But they do have the players to do it.
- 18:11Speaker 1: They dealt with just a lot of injuries last year
- 18:14Speaker 1: and which made them a sub five hundred team. So
- 18:16Speaker 1: they could be coming back, you know, with the vengeance,
- 18:19Speaker 1: but as you said, they still have to knock off
- 18:21Speaker 1: the NFC champs and right now that's the Seattle Seahawks. Man, Guys,
- 18:26Speaker 1: the West is I think the West is gonna come
- 18:28Speaker 1: back and once again be the best division in football, right.
- 18:30Speaker 1: I mean, for the most part of last season they were.
- 18:32Speaker 1: You look at the records, you have two playoff teams,
- 18:34Speaker 1: almost had three and Matthew Stafford, Man, I'm not gonna
- 18:37Speaker 1: lie to you. That got me a little shook. Man.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I mean, I know the Rams will not have a
- 18:42Speaker 1: first round draft pick till my kids are in high school.
- 18:45Speaker 1: But when they do, I know that's I know it's
- 18:46Speaker 1: down the road. But Matthew Stafford's a game changer. I think.
- 18:50Speaker 1: I think with Sean McVay, he's a great he's a
- 18:52Speaker 1: great offensive mind. They still got a lot of weapons
- 18:54Speaker 1: out there, so they scare me, of course, and then
- 18:56Speaker 1: you got touched on it, Babs Kyler Murray coming into
- 18:59Speaker 1: years three, he could be the next big thing, right
- 19:03Speaker 1: you know, the league kind of started to figure him
- 19:04Speaker 1: out a little bit towards the end of last year.
- 19:06Speaker 1: But he's got so much potential and you got really
- 19:08Speaker 1: good coaches in the NCUS. So for me, I just
- 19:10Speaker 1: think this division once again is gonna be the best
- 19:12Speaker 1: division in football. But as Babs said, you gotta knock
- 19:15Speaker 1: off the champs. We still have number three. We saw
- 19:17Speaker 1: Pete Carroll and one last thing, you gotta freget the Rams.
- 19:20Speaker 1: They lost damn nee of their whole coaching staff. We
- 19:23Speaker 1: got two of them up in Seattle. Their coaching staffs
- 19:25Speaker 1: all over. So there's just so many different question marks
- 19:27Speaker 1: and it's gonna be an interesting offseason once free agency
- 19:31Speaker 1: really gets going here in March. That's what happens when
- 19:33Speaker 1: you win, they start poaching your coaches McBay is gonna
- 19:36Speaker 1: have to do have his best coaching year ever. This year.
- 19:39Speaker 1: It's no longer a secret. Everybody's taking your coaches. You
- 19:43Speaker 1: got a new quarterback, and I feel like the Rams
- 19:45Speaker 1: out there a quarterback away from being a great team.
- 19:48Speaker 1: We will find out well right now, No, we're gonna
- 19:51Speaker 1: do Bass. We're gonna pivot. We're gonna pivot this thing,
- 19:53Speaker 1: all right. Pivot. So when my guy Babs is an author,
- 19:57Speaker 1: if you haven't picked it up yet, pivots win and
- 20:00Speaker 1: it's on Amazon, it's everywhere right now. Follow this man,
- 20:04Speaker 1: click on his links. He will get you going. But
- 20:06Speaker 1: before we focus on the pivot to win it, there's
- 20:08Speaker 1: a day when Baths is big play Bass. He was
- 20:11Speaker 1: just a teammate. And you know what I'm saying, he
- 20:12Speaker 1: was twenty seven. He said, choke me out at the
- 20:15Speaker 1: line of scrimmage during one on ones. Had to get
- 20:17Speaker 1: him off of me. You know what I mean it.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Babs is more than an author, but author is great,
- 20:21Speaker 1: but he was big play Babs at one point. Tony
- 20:24Speaker 1: Romo is the holder, so he is a quarterback and
- 20:28Speaker 1: that means he could also fake. This means anything can happen.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Fourth and one grammatic of the field goal will be
- 20:37Speaker 1: spotted at the nine yard line, so a nineteen yard
- 20:40Speaker 1: field goal by Grammatica. There's the snap, the spot, Romo's
- 20:45Speaker 1: gonna run it in he's head and he's got down.
- 20:47Speaker 1: He goes to get there. I can't tell him, fumbl.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I think the call is down and there's a matter
- 20:55Speaker 1: of fact he has he's down on the lawn. Unbelievable.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Robo can't get the spot out. Babs, you will. You
- 21:06Speaker 1: are immortal. You will live forever in football because of
- 21:10Speaker 1: that place. So congratulations, sir. But let's talk about your book,
- 21:14Speaker 1: Pivot to Win It What inspired you to write that
- 21:16Speaker 1: book and why is the ability to pivot so crucial
- 21:19Speaker 1: when it comes to life, business, sports. Help me out? Yeah, thanks, thanks,
- 21:24Speaker 1: buff it's you know, it's exciting. Um, And I'll tell
- 21:27Speaker 1: you I went on this journey of of writing writing
- 21:31Speaker 1: Pivot to Win back in the summer of twenty nineteen.
- 21:34Speaker 1: And you know, at the core of you know, who
- 21:38Speaker 1: I am and my desire to want to create impact
- 21:42Speaker 1: and create community. Um, it's about helping other people Pivot
- 21:46Speaker 1: to win. It's just another way that gives me an
- 21:49Speaker 1: opportunity to do so. And in the book Pivot to Win,
- 21:52Speaker 1: I share my stories of success and failures. And you know,
- 21:55Speaker 1: we're all we're all pivoting, you know, all the time. Um,
- 21:59Speaker 1: you know, whether we really lives that are not changes
- 22:01Speaker 1: one thing that's consistent in our lives and and bump.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I know you've had your experiences as well of pivoting
- 22:08Speaker 1: away from the NFL. But you know, for me, it
- 22:11Speaker 1: was it was a big challenge. You know, Um, I
- 22:13Speaker 1: felt like I lost a self of a piece of myself.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I lost a little bit of identity. I was dealing
- 22:18Speaker 1: with um challenges and of um you know, psychology challenges,
- 22:24Speaker 1: of value, of finding myself. UM. I think one of
- 22:28Speaker 1: the biggest things when I talked to former players, it's like,
- 22:31Speaker 1: when I come out of the NFL, it's like, well,
- 22:33Speaker 1: what am I gonna do? So time management became, um,
- 22:37Speaker 1: you know, one of the big skills that I really
- 22:39Speaker 1: had to hone in on. But you know I had
- 22:42Speaker 1: to and redefining success, you know, it was no longer
- 22:44Speaker 1: putting on a jersey, uh, you know, catching interceptions or
- 22:48Speaker 1: chasing Tony Romo down before he got into the end zone. Um.
- 22:51Speaker 1: But but I will say that you know, accepting change
- 22:54Speaker 1: and accepting the challenge of pivoting away became the catalyst
- 22:58Speaker 1: for growth for me. I think you just jumped into
- 23:00Speaker 1: my next question. Babs. You talked about obviously you put
- 23:03Speaker 1: the pads on. We know he's big play baths. You
- 23:04Speaker 1: know he's number twenty seven. Um. Not everyone knows you
- 23:07Speaker 1: as everything else that you were about man and not
- 23:09Speaker 1: everyone knows that you got an MBA, that you went
- 23:11Speaker 1: back to school, that you have a bunch of different businesses.
- 23:14Speaker 1: So like since retiring you became a broadcaster, you founded
- 23:17Speaker 1: those businesses. What would you credit probably your your ability
- 23:21Speaker 1: to like you said, pivot. You went from because no one,
- 23:24Speaker 1: no one, there's no game plan right when you're done
- 23:26Speaker 1: playing football. I think that's so many things that people struggle.
- 23:29Speaker 1: So how did you go from that to being so
- 23:31Speaker 1: successful in every other part of your life? Yeah? You know, Um,
- 23:36Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing you know for me is
- 23:38Speaker 1: is that no matter where I was in my circumstances,
- 23:41Speaker 1: I'll go back. So So I grew up in port Uto, Texas,
- 23:44Speaker 1: and I'm talking you know as many um other athletes
- 23:48Speaker 1: may have experienced. You know, I was surrounded by by
- 23:51Speaker 1: drug addiction, by violence by um. You know, my mother
- 23:55Speaker 1: was on government assistance, and you know, the streets seemed
- 23:58Speaker 1: like a fast way to make money. UM. But but
- 24:01Speaker 1: I never really um let my condition or circumstances dictate
- 24:06Speaker 1: where I wanted to go or what I ain't envisioned
- 24:08Speaker 1: for myself. And I won't say that that was innate,
- 24:11Speaker 1: that was natural. It was something that um just as
- 24:14Speaker 1: a kid, that I wanted to develop when I wanted
- 24:16Speaker 1: to grow, and I was interested in um. I remember
- 24:20Speaker 1: as as a child looking on looking at a clock
- 24:22Speaker 1: on the wall, and you know, understanding like how does
- 24:25Speaker 1: this clock work like it? How does this clock know
- 24:27Speaker 1: that it's neon or that at twelve thirty or whatever
- 24:30Speaker 1: time it was? Well, I later found out as I
- 24:32Speaker 1: got older, bumped that all it took was batteries, right,
- 24:35Speaker 1: you put it to batteries in any words. But but
- 24:38Speaker 1: when we talk about the clock, you know this, this
- 24:41Speaker 1: this idea of the clock is that you know, one
- 24:43Speaker 1: axel or one mechanism moves the other, you know, and
- 24:47Speaker 1: it's like, what am I doing now today that will
- 24:50Speaker 1: help me move closer to the person I become or
- 24:53Speaker 1: the person I desire for myself? The change that I
- 24:55Speaker 1: want to seek in my own life or um or
- 24:58Speaker 1: the the upgrade or advancement in my career that I want.
- 25:03Speaker 1: And I really had to examine some of my habits
- 25:05Speaker 1: and I had to let go some of the habits
- 25:07Speaker 1: that work that wasn't serving those purposes. Um. And just
- 25:10Speaker 1: became a real um opportunity for me to address the
- 25:15Speaker 1: things that I felt as a player that I've masked
- 25:18Speaker 1: for so long, you know, as kids and as young
- 25:21Speaker 1: boys were taught oh don't cry or you know, toughen up,
- 25:25Speaker 1: and especially in football, when we have this alpha male
- 25:28Speaker 1: mentality and this macho mindset that I can do it
- 25:31Speaker 1: all and you know and nothing hurts. Well, um, it's
- 25:34Speaker 1: it's it's when I began to pivot away from the
- 25:37Speaker 1: NFL that I was also pivoting emotionally and spiritually and
- 25:41Speaker 1: and and I wrapped that all together. Uh. And through
- 25:44Speaker 1: this book writing process, I was able to let go
- 25:47Speaker 1: of a lot of the things that I would have
- 25:49Speaker 1: massked and the things that I've held on for so long. Um.
- 25:52Speaker 1: So now I would I would credit to to just
- 25:55Speaker 1: having that that growth mindset and looking out beyond the
- 25:58Speaker 1: current circumstances and conditions that I was in to achieve
- 26:02Speaker 1: and want something better for where I was in my
- 26:05Speaker 1: current circumstance, in my current condition and as and I
- 26:08Speaker 1: feel like you couldn't do that without having someone or
- 26:12Speaker 1: something hold you accountable. You talk about finding people to
- 26:15Speaker 1: hold you accountable in your book. Who doesn't for you?
- 26:18Speaker 1: And why do you feel like that's so essential? Yeah,
- 26:22Speaker 1: you know, it's it's it's one of those things when
- 26:24Speaker 1: when you start talking about accountability that you know you
- 26:30Speaker 1: can be accountable to yourself, right, But um, I think
- 26:34Speaker 1: when you began tom to share what it is that
- 26:37Speaker 1: you want with someone who can hold you accountable for instance,
- 26:40Speaker 1: you know, I mean when we played, our coaches held
- 26:42Speaker 1: us accountable. I mean you have to know the playbook
- 26:45Speaker 1: in order to make to get on the field, you
- 26:47Speaker 1: have to understand your position and you almost have to
- 26:50Speaker 1: understand how the positions around you work as well. I mean,
- 26:53Speaker 1: you really have to look at it from a big
- 26:56Speaker 1: picture of bird's eye view of how the offense, how
- 26:58Speaker 1: one player of affects the movement of the other. You know,
- 27:02Speaker 1: having an accountability group, having a performance partner, or whatever
- 27:05Speaker 1: you want to call it, you know, to me just
- 27:08Speaker 1: gives you an opportunity to to step up. And I'll
- 27:13Speaker 1: use this instance. When I decided to write this book,
- 27:15Speaker 1: I was at a business leadership masterclass down in San Diego.
- 27:20Speaker 1: My mentor, Darren Hardy, you know, held this private engagement
- 27:24Speaker 1: with a hundred business owners across the world, and he
- 27:29Speaker 1: he stood up, he invited us to come back a
- 27:31Speaker 1: little early for anyone who was interested in writing a book.
- 27:35Speaker 1: And somehow, some way, this idea clicked in for me. Now,
- 27:40Speaker 1: I didn't know what this writing process would be, or
- 27:43Speaker 1: what the topic and subject would be, but I stood
- 27:46Speaker 1: up in front of ninety nine other people and said
- 27:50Speaker 1: I'm going to write a book and just uttering those
- 27:53Speaker 1: words to myself, I was like, what are you doing?
- 27:57Speaker 1: And but it's that level of accountability I think when
- 28:01Speaker 1: if we're answering to ourselves and it's okay to say, oh,
- 28:03Speaker 1: i'll sleep in today, I'll make it up tomorrow, or
- 28:06Speaker 1: oh things aren't going well, I'm not seeing the success
- 28:10Speaker 1: that I want. You know, I can give up. But
- 28:12Speaker 1: when you have that accountability partner, you want to prove
- 28:15Speaker 1: you want to live up to what you said you
- 28:17Speaker 1: wanted to do. And I think that's just super important
- 28:21Speaker 1: when you start to set goals for yourself. That that's
- 28:23Speaker 1: one way to help you achieve your goals is to
- 28:25Speaker 1: have that accountability partner and someone that could help you
- 28:28Speaker 1: reach the person or desire that you want for yourself.
- 28:32Speaker 1: You know, I think I love you hearing about talking
- 28:34Speaker 1: about being accountable, because accountable is something that as you
- 28:37Speaker 1: learn as a football player, you learn in life. It's
- 28:39Speaker 1: something that you need. If you say you're gonna do something,
- 28:41Speaker 1: do it right. But I think what happens beyond that
- 28:45Speaker 1: is you get told no a lot, right as I'm
- 28:48Speaker 1: sure as a football player, as trying to start your
- 28:50Speaker 1: own business going back to school, you've probably been told no, no, no,
- 28:54Speaker 1: So I'm pivot to win. You know, it's just refusing
- 28:57Speaker 1: no for an answer. You know, we hear that a lot,
- 28:59Speaker 1: But what does that mean in practice? Yeah? Yeah, no,
- 29:03Speaker 1: that's that's great and you're absolutely right. You know, Um,
- 29:07Speaker 1: starting a small business there's no easy feat. You know,
- 29:10Speaker 1: when you when you want to go to a banker
- 29:12Speaker 1: with it with a great idea or a concept that
- 29:14Speaker 1: has proven, uh to get capital so you can scale
- 29:17Speaker 1: up and you're told no, Um or you want to
- 29:20Speaker 1: see want to seek a client or relationship or a
- 29:22Speaker 1: business partner, um, and suddenly you can't get the access
- 29:25Speaker 1: that you need to them. You know, I often think
- 29:28Speaker 1: of when people tell me no, then well maybe I'm
- 29:30Speaker 1: just asking the wrong person, you know. Really, I mean
- 29:33Speaker 1: it's like you're not the person that I need to
- 29:36Speaker 1: talk to because I don't want to give someone the
- 29:39Speaker 1: authority or the permission to say that I can't achieve
- 29:42Speaker 1: something that I want. And and oftentime, just the person
- 29:45Speaker 1: who who's saying the no UH is standing in the
- 29:48Speaker 1: way of what it is that you want. I'll share
- 29:51Speaker 1: this on the other side too, is that not telling
- 29:53Speaker 1: yourself no? You know? UM, there's there's this battle that
- 29:57Speaker 1: we all experienced and you know what your professional football
- 30:01Speaker 1: player or not. There's this battle between the body and
- 30:03Speaker 1: the mind. And we all have this enemy that lives
- 30:07Speaker 1: within us that tells us we we you know, don't
- 30:09Speaker 1: try that or you know you may look silly doing that,
- 30:13Speaker 1: don't do it right, and it forces us to act
- 30:15Speaker 1: to not act within our you know, our self, our
- 30:18Speaker 1: our given self UM, to be authentic and to be
- 30:21Speaker 1: real when really that that inclination or that idea UH
- 30:27Speaker 1: is sometimes a divine or a spiritual UH. You know
- 30:31Speaker 1: talk or or voice that's given us permission to do that.
- 30:35Speaker 1: And and oftentimes when we um, when we fight this
- 30:39Speaker 1: enemy that lives within us, that that keeps us caged
- 30:43Speaker 1: from taking that step. Uh, it's it's we're like, we're
- 30:46Speaker 1: living in this sense of fear and and and it's
- 30:49Speaker 1: really hindering us for an opportunity to see beyond what
- 30:53Speaker 1: this what this false evidence of of of um appearing
- 30:59Speaker 1: real in our head is telling us not to do
- 31:02Speaker 1: and it's stopping us from achieving something that where we
- 31:05Speaker 1: see it and we do it, there's new discoveries on
- 31:08Speaker 1: the other side of that. No, there's new discoveries on
- 31:11Speaker 1: the other side of taking that first step and acting.
- 31:14Speaker 1: And I think that's one of you two ways to
- 31:16Speaker 1: look at it. It's the one person that's standing in
- 31:18Speaker 1: the way of your yes, and maybe you're just asking
- 31:20Speaker 1: the wrong person who don't have the authority. But then
- 31:23Speaker 1: it's also not telling yourself no and moving beyond this
- 31:26Speaker 1: initial sense of fear because it seems a little bit
- 31:30Speaker 1: frightening or uncomfortable to do something that you really want
- 31:33Speaker 1: for yourself. Babs blessed us with a bunch of knowledge,
- 31:38Speaker 1: and that's just a snippet, go get the book, folks,

- 32:33Speaker 1: And essentially, Pivot to Win is a story of change.
