- 0:07Houston Astros faced the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium for a Wednesday night game on September 29th, 1971.
- 0:15Houston had been an average team for several years and continued that trend in 1971 under manager Harry Walker.
- 0:21The Dodgers on the other hand were making a run at the NOS title.
- 0:24To enter this matchup there's one game behind the Giants in the NL West with an 88-72 record under manager Walt Alston.
- 0:31This audio recording is from the Los Angeles Radio broadcast featuring announcer Ben Scully.
- 1:01The 1-1 pitch is lifted foul and out of play, or first base in the count 1-1.
- 1:05In fact, when you think about it, as surprising as this National League Western race has turned out,
- 1:11what is more surprising is the thing that on the 29th of September, Al Downing would be pitching at Dodger Stadium trying to win his 21st.
- 1:20Al almost beat together on the rubber. Left hand is 1-1, pitch is a little high and away.
- 1:27Ball 2, 2-1 accounts to Roger Metzger. Metzger, not a power hitter, is hitting 234.
- 1:37Downing's 2-1 fastball is over, strike 2, 2-2.
- 1:45The calling of balls and strikes tonight by umpire Tom Gorman, who is the left-hand pitcher in his day, and Tommy behind the plate.
- 1:53The 2-2 pitch to Metzger, fastball fouled away, and it's still 2-2.
- 2:062-2, Metzger making Downing work.
- 2:11Now Al checks, Sims wigwags a couple of signs out.
- 2:17Downing to the windup and the 2-2 pitch on the way. Palm ball got him swinging.
- 2:26So Al Downing throws the palm ball to strikeout Metzger, and Nevada will be Joe Morgan.
- 2:41It is only fitting and proper that Tommy Gorman should be affiliated with a game involving either the Dodgers or the Giants.
- 2:50San Diego has just scored a run. We'll give you the details in a minute.
- 2:55As Downing looks in to work to Joe Morgan, Al delivers and gets the strike.
- 3:09The crowd reacting now, they posted the Padres lead in the second inning. Morgan takes the curveball low, one ball, one strike.
- 3:16The Padres had runners at first and third. Barton, the ex-Giant, had a bounce back to the box.
- 3:21Cumberland knocked it down but couldn't make a play, and the run came over from third.
- 3:26He did make a play at first base to get Barton, but the run came over, so the Padres are leading 1-0 in the second inning.
- 3:33It's 2-1 to count to Joe Morgan. We were saying before how ironic it is that Tommy Gorman is behind the plate for several reasons.
- 3:41Here's Downing's 2-1 pitch, fastball low, ball 3. We told you that Tom Gorman was a left-hand pitcher.
- 3:47Tom Gorman not only was a left-hand pitcher, he came up briefly to the big leagues with the Giants.
- 3:53And he came up to the big leagues as an umpire in September of 1951, one of the great pennant races of all time.
- 4:00And now Morgan takes ball four. So Tommy Gorman just figures to be involved in a Giant Dodger pennant race,
- 4:08and it's an added bit of irony that he would be behind the plate tonight.
- 4:12Well, there are three outs in San Diego, and the Padres are leading the Giants 1-0.
- 4:17We have one out here in the first inning, and Cesar Cedeno the batter.
- 4:21Here is something to keep in mind, and we're not trying to cloud the issue, but it is a point.
- 4:26Clay Kirby is pitching for San Diego. Kirby, Friday night, pitched 15 innings.
- 4:31Scouts who saw him pitch told me tonight he made 234 pitches Friday night.
- 4:39And boy, if he can come back strong after that outing, it will be another surprising part of this story.
- 4:45But at the end of two innings, he's leading 1-0.
- 4:48But he doesn't figure to be the same Kirby who has been working all year for the Padres. He should get very tired.
- 4:55Cedeno right in, hitting center fielder at the plate. There goes Morgan.
- 4:59The pitch is low. The throw, not in time.
- 5:03Little Joe, a good stealer, and Morgan underneath for his 38th stolen base.
- 5:13So Morgan in the fourth inning of last night's game walk, and a hit-and-run play by Cedeno got him to third.
- 5:20He steals second.
- 5:26So Cedeno trying to pick him up. 1-0 the count.
- 5:31Downing at the belt. Al comes back 1-0. Breaking ball. Swung on and missed, trying to hard swing by Cedeno.
- 5:49Cedeno right in, hitter, closed stands, left foot very close to the plate, right foot deep and on the line.
- 5:55Now the 1-1 pitch to Cesar is swung on and missed.
- 5:59Well, the count 1-2. Another breaking ball.
- 6:04Here in the first inning, Roger Metzger struck out on a palm ball. Morgan walk just stole his 38th.
- 6:10And Cedeno is up there with the count 1-2. Bob Watson is on deck.
- 6:18Downing Ruddy and the 1-2 pitch coming up is low, ball two. 2-2 to Cesar Cedeno.
- 6:30The umpires for this series, and of course they're so important.
- 6:34Tom Gorman behind the plate in his 21st year in the big leagues.
- 6:38Stan Landis in first 17 years. Andy Olson is the youngster of the group his fourth year.
- 6:43Doug Harvey on the line at third has put in 10.
- 6:48Here's a 2-2 pitch to Gorman. Breaking ball stayed up, ball three.
- 6:55Full count to Cesar Cedeno and now Duke Stemmes goes after the mound to talk to Downing.
- 7:00So those are the umpires, and whenever you get into a big series, you always like to know a little bit about them.
- 7:06So the messers Gorman and Landis, Olson and Harvey.
- 7:17Full count to Cesar Cedeno, one away. First inning, Downing at the belt.
- 7:22Checking, world's throw's high to Valentine and back to the bag easily is Morgan.
- 7:28They're in the third inning at San Diego, and the Padres are leading 1-0.
- 7:33That's Clay Kirby and John Cumberland.
- 7:37And Pointy's opened up with a base hit down there.
- 7:40Here's a 3-2 pitch to Cedeno. Palm ball got him swinging and he went after a bad ball.
- 7:49So Cedeno chasing a palm ball up around the eyes, strikes out.
- 7:54Two down and here is the bull, Bob Watson.
- 7:59Bob Watson, right hand hitting first baseman and left fielder, a Los Angeles boy.
- 8:18Downing with two down in the first inning, and Watson waiting at the plate.
- 8:23Morgan at second base on a walk and a stolen base.
- 8:27Downing ready, fastball high and away, ball one.
- 8:30He has to showcase that pitch to get them after the palm ball.
- 8:33He struck out two.
- 8:35Al Downing trying to make it seven straight, trying to roll a natural tonight and win his 21st.
- 8:43Here's the 1-0 pitch on the way to Watson.
- 8:45Ground ball up the middle, base hit.
- 8:47Here comes Morgan, he'll score.
- 8:49Davis makes the throw to the plate, cut off by Buckner,
- 8:52but there's nobody at first base to make a play there.
- 8:55So Bob Watson singles home Joe Morgan, and the Astros have a run 1-0.
- 9:02So the Giants and Dodgers continue to play peek-a-boo with each other.
- 9:06The Padres are leading the Giants, the Astros are leading the Dodgers.
- 9:11At San Diego, 20 singles, Willie Mays has just doubled 20s to third base.
- 9:19So the Giants are making noise.
- 9:21And remember now, the Giants are hitting against a man who made 234 pitches Friday night.
- 9:27Incredible.
- 9:29Here is Jimmy Wynn, he takes outside, ball one.
- 9:33When you make 234 pitches any time in the year, you have expended a tremendous amount of energy.
- 9:39But when you do it in the end of September, you're almost carried out on your shield.
- 9:44Here's a 1-0 pitch to Jimmy Wynn, palm ball for a strike, and they count 1-1.
- 9:52So the Walk to Morgan set up the Astro run last night.
- 9:56The Walk to Morgan has set up their run tonight.
- 10:00Jimmy Wynn waiting at the plate, downing a look over at first.
- 10:03Now out of the plate, palm ball way outside and high.
- 10:06Thames Atticum leaping out of his crouch to Corallet, and they count 2-1.
- 10:16With runners at second and third, Willie McCovey struck out in San Diego.
- 10:21That inning is still alive.
- 10:25There's one out, runners at second and third, and Bobby Bonds will be the batter.
- 10:292-1 pitch to win, a banter up the middle, and that's going to go to center field.
- 10:33Watson is going to go to third. Willie throw to third, cutoff by Wills, but he has no further play.
- 10:40So downing has given up a walk and two singles in the first inning.
- 10:45And he's wobbly, and the Dodger bullpen will get ready,
- 10:49because no matter how many games anybody has won up to here, tonight's the night.
- 10:54And the Dodger bullpen gets Rizzi and Ari as Asus Allou comes up.
- 11:02Joel Alexander, who is the long man every day, his first man up in the Dodger bullpen tonight.
- 11:09He was up back a singer last night. He was up back a Sutton in Atlanta.
- 11:16They are walking Bobby Bonds intentionally in San Diego,
- 11:19so they'll have the bases loaded with one out, one nothing Padres third inning.
- 11:27A pitch to Allou, a strike. As soon as they walk Bobby Bonds to fill the bases,
- 11:34Dick Beets will be the batter.
- 11:38The mule, as they call him, he's from South Carolina, and of course he was beamed,
- 11:41but recently hit a grand slammer against Cincinnati.
- 11:44Here's a strike one pitch. Ground ball sharply inside third and down the line.
- 11:49In comes Watson, going to third base and holding near, on the double is Wynn.
- 11:55And as he rounds third, they get the ball to Allen, but he just does get back to the bag.
- 12:01And here comes Red Adams, and we will see now as it is a stormy beginning for Al Downing.
- 12:07He has given up a walk, two singles, and a double, and the Astros have two.
- 12:12In a moment, Dennis Menke will be coming up.
- 12:23Red Adams talking to Downing.
- 12:27This is only a guess because it is one thing that Downing does a great deal,
- 12:32one thing that Adams has talked about.
- 12:34Al sometimes gets in too much of a hurry to make a pitch,
- 12:37so that he is striding towards the plate while his arms are still high up over his head,
- 12:42and it takes a lot off his pitches.
- 12:44So it could be that Adams goes out and said,
- 12:47wait, wait for your arms and hands to catch up to your body.
- 12:51Of course, it is only a guess from here, but it is one thing that Red has pointed out to Al throughout the years.
- 12:56Second and third, two outs, two nothing Astros, and the batter is Dennis Menke.
- 13:01Downing at the belt, left-hander out of a stretch, and the fast ball away, ball one.
- 13:05Well, one thing, and you know as well as I do, if they are going to do it at all, they are going to do it the hard way.
- 13:11They wouldn't have Dodgers on their chest otherwise.
- 13:15Dick Dietz has just struck out, the pitch is low, ball two.
- 13:21So the bases remain loaded in San Diego.
- 13:24There are two outs since Dietz and McCovey have struck out, and Alan Gallagher is the batter,
- 13:30and Clay Kirby is trying to keep the Giants away.
- 13:35Two-oh pitch to Menke, over with the palm ball, two and one.
- 13:41Two down, Jimmy Wynn down the line from third, Hey-toos-a-loo at second, two nothing Astros,
- 13:49Downing trying to get out of the first inning.
- 13:51Al straightens up, a look at the runners, the two-one pitch, palm ball high, ball three.
- 13:57On deck is catcher Larry Howard.
- 14:03Three and one, a count to Dennis Menke.
- 14:07Veteran right hand batter chokes up on the batter a bit, downing at the belt,
- 14:11and the three-one pitch to Denny is low to load him up.
- 14:15And so Larry Howard will be coming up with the bases loaded and two out in the first inning.
- 14:20Howard is the guy who beat the Giants in Houston last week when he hit a two-run home run over the center field fence.
- 14:31Howard, hitting only 220, has only two home runs, but one of the two beat the Giants
- 14:37and gave the Dodgers a game in the standings.
- 14:40Now he comes up trying to torment the Dodgers with the bases loaded and two out,
- 14:44two nothing Houston in the first inning.
- 14:47Downing had not allowed more than two earned runs in any game against the Astros this year,
- 14:54and he's one and two to them going in.
- 14:57Howard, right hand batter waiting, downing delivers, fastball, got the outside corner for a strike, going one.
- 15:07So the San Francisco boy, Alan Gallagher, has got the plate with the bases loaded in San Diego.
- 15:13Larry Howard has got the plate with the bases loaded in Los Angeles,
- 15:16and there's a line drive, base hit in the right center.
- 15:19In comes one, here comes Alou.
- 15:22It is four to nothing Houston in the first inning.
- 15:26Still two out.
- 15:29And the batter who has not thrown a pitch yet is pitcher Ken Forge.
- 15:34Starting man, number 43, pitcher Ken Forge.
- 15:44So the Astros have four big runs in the first inning, still two out,
- 15:49and if the Giants needed a lift, why when they post that four,
- 15:53they'll be sky high in San Diego despite the fact they're trailing one nothing.
- 15:58Ken Forge, right hand batter, fourth is seven and eight with the league,
- 16:03downing still out of his stretch, Al delivers and it's flung on a miss, going one.
- 16:09Outside of the double by Alou, which was hit inside third and down the line,
- 16:14the three other base hits have been to center.
- 16:17They have gone three and two to Alan Gallagher with the bases loaded and two out in the third.
- 16:22Forge swings and misses, so we'll tell you what Clay Kirby and Gallagher do in a vital spot in San Diego.
- 16:29Meanwhile, the Astros have flattened the Dodgers in the first inning with four.
- 16:350-2 the count to Ken Forge.
- 16:39Larry Howard at first, Dennis Menke at second, the breaking ball is flung on a miss, strike three.
- 16:46You see if we have any further effort out of San Diego, not yet.
- 16:50Four big runs on four hits, two men left, and the Dodgers must be shocked to their toes as they go to the dugout.
- 16:58Gallagher has just made out, so Kirby has escaped the Giants in the third.
- 17:03Meanwhile, at the end of the half an inning, Astros four, Dodgers coming up.
- 17:07Schlitz, Milwaukee in the world.
- 17:10Music
- 17:34You only get one crack at life and you've got to live it with all the best that you can. Never.
- 17:40Even the beard.
- 17:42Schlitz.
- 17:52Tricycle cholesterol. When you're out of Schlitz, you're out of beard.
- 18:09Bottom of the first inning with the Astros a big four on the board.
- 18:13Right-hander Ken Forge loosening up. Seven and eight with the league, but a marvelous ERA of 2.6.
- 18:20His start at 22 games completed six, and Forge is one and one with the Dodgers.
- 18:27He'll be pitching to Maury Wills, Bill Buckner, and Willie Davis.
- 18:37Maury Wills gets a hero's welcome as he comes to the plate.
- 18:41He had the clutch base hit of Roger Metzger's glove to drive into winning run last night.
- 18:52Maury hitting 298 left-handed, and big Forge ready delivers. Fastball for a strike.
- 18:58He throws hard. Forge this year shut out the Dodgers two to nothing and lost a bitter game three to two.
- 19:07That was quite nice. The pitch to Wills is low. One ball, one strike.
- 19:17One and one. It counts to Maury Wills. Fastball hit foul down the left-hander line out of play.
- 19:23Ken Forge is 6'4", 195 pounders. He's from Sacramento. He still lives there. He attended Oregon State University.
- 19:34The next one, fastball outside. Ball two, two, and two.
- 19:41In his career in the minors, he averaged just about a strike out in inning. He's that kind of a pitcher.
- 19:46There's a bouncer over the mound. Back of second base into center field.
- 19:53Maury Wills leading the Dodgers as always. Singles to center, and the batter is Bill Buckner.
- 20:16Bill Buckner checking in Wills at first. To give you an idea of what's going on in San Diego,
- 20:21the Giants are having their problems with play curvy. Buckner takes five, ball one.
- 20:26The Giants in three innings have left seven men on base, and the Padres lead one to nothing.
- 20:34Well, the Dodgers fans like the ball club haven't given up by any means. Bill hitting 276.
- 20:39Throw to first, Wills back to the bag. Four runs, four hits for the Astos, and the Dodgers trying to catch up.
- 20:47In this inning, here's the 1-0 pitch to Buckner, taken for a strike in the count one and one.
- 20:55Forrest has allowed three earned runs in 15 innings against the Dodgers, and in 15 innings he has struck out 15 Dodgers.
- 21:08The 1-1 pitch coming up to Buckner is twice the left field. Going back on the ball is Alou, and one-hands it.
- 21:15And going back to first is Maury Wills. That ball just started to take off as it was speared in left field by Alou.
- 21:23Willie Davis, the batter. We were telling you before that play curvy Friday night against Houston worked 15 innings and made 234-50.
- 21:38Ken Forch worked 13 innings against Curvy and allowed just one earned run.
- 21:45Big right-hander's pitch to Davis, breaking ball for a strike.
- 21:50Willie hitting 3-11, 10 home runs, 74 RBIs.
- 21:55Padres fail to score in the third, so they're in the top of the fourth inning. Padres one, Giants nothing.
- 22:03Forch up the belt, and the spike one pitch to Davis way outside, one-handed by Larry Howard.
- 22:08Let's set the Astros defensively. Forch and Howard, in for your Bob Watson at first, Joe Morgan at second, Roger Metcher at short, Dennis Menke at third,
- 22:19Esu Salou in left, Cesar Cedeno in center, Jim Wynn in right. Go to first, high, Wills back on his hands and knees.
- 22:32One ball, one spike. The Astros have four, a walk-in with two outs, singles by Watson and Wynn, a double by Alou, a walk-in, a single by Howard for the four.
- 22:43Davis fouls it back to the screen in the count one and two.
- 22:47Show you how Harry Walker is playing it, and of course, it's the only way.
- 22:51Leading four to nothing, and with a runner at first base against him, Harry has two men throwing in the Houston bullpen, and why not?
- 23:00One and two to Willie Davis. Forch up the belt, right-hander delivers, and as a bouncer wide at third, Menke goes to second base for a force on Wills.
- 23:11So with two out and Willie Davis aboard on a force, the batter is Richie Allen.
- 23:16Batting for number 50, Larry Rich. Batting 298, Rich Allen.
- 23:26Richie Allen hitting 298, 23 home runs, 90 runs batted in.
- 23:32Willie Davis at first has hit safely in 18 of the last 21. Allen has hit safely in 9 of the last 10.
- 23:39He hits a high fly ball down the right field line. It's playable and catchable, and Jimmy Wynn is right there to do both.
- 23:46So the Dodgers in the first inning, no runs won, hit a man left, and at the end of an inning, Astros four, Dodgers nothing.
- 23:55It's happiness to many a youngster is a day or a night at the ballpark watching the Dodgers.
- 23:59Of course, part of the fun is munching away on those long, luscious 10-inch hot dogs sold at the stadium.
- 24:04Farmer John Dodger dogs, we call them, and you'll find them in most markets as extra-long Farmer John wieners.
- 24:11So now your children can have a ball in your own backyard, barbecuing these fabulous, fun-sized wieners.
- 24:17And for their length, extra-long Farmer John wieners are the very same as regular Farmer John wieners. Same finest, precious meat and all meat.
- 24:26Same wildly wonderful Western flavor from smoking over real smoke from native Western wood.
- 24:32And with the same winning ways, because both kinds of Farmer John wieners won gold medals at the California State Fair.
- 24:39You'll find regular Farmer John wieners in the delicatessen section of your market,
- 24:43and be sure to look for extra-long Farmer John wieners, too, in the deli or in the meat department.
- 24:48Who but Farmer John would think to give you such a delicious choice?
- 24:54Second inning, the Astros 4, Dodgers nothing. Al Downing trying to recover now.
- 25:00In the background, a pause on a message board. It says,
- 25:03with us tonight a man who played in the first World Series, 1903, caught for Pittsburgh against the Boston Red Sox, lives in South Pasadena, 90 years old, Fred Carich.
- 25:14Roger Metzger will start it off. It'll be followed by Joe Morgan and then Cesar Cedeno.
- 25:20It certainly went unnoticed. It didn't really mean much. But Al Downing started off the game by striking out the side.
- 25:28He also gave up four runs and four hits. Metzger, 0-4-1.
- 25:33Allen plays a step up inside the bag at third, and Downing ready and delivers. Metzger grounds one foul outside of hers.
- 25:40In San Diego, Clay Kirby got what he needed, an easy inning. He got three Giants on four pitches.
- 25:47So the Giants are gone in order, and at the end of three and a half innings, it remains San Diego 1, and the Giants nothing.
- 25:55Downing strike one pitch on the way. Fastball, a big chopper, speared by Allen. Richie steps and throws out Metzger.
- 26:02Let's pause for station identification. This is the Los Angeles Dodgers Radio Network.
- 26:07Hi, this is Dave Fisher reminding you you're listening to the Happy Day station.
- 26:11KTAR in Phoenix will be on after the game with more from Bill Johnson's Big Apple.
- 26:18One away, Joe Morgan, who scored the only Astro run last night, scored the first of four in the first inning tonight with a walk.
- 26:28Downing ready, Allen delivers, and the pitch is low, 4-1.
- 26:32Allen Downing has an earned run average of 2.5, so you can realize what a shock it is for him to give up four in the first inning.
- 26:39He's 20 and 8.
- 26:42Downing to the windup, and the 1-0 pitch on the way. Morgan runs to bunt, but takes low, ball two, 2-0.
- 26:554-0 Houston. We're in the second inning, 1-0 away. Morgan the batter, Sedeno on deck.
- 27:00Downing delivers and gets a strike, 2-1. Richie Allen playing Morgan well in on the grass.
- 27:07Little Joe hitting 2-54. He has 13 home runs.
- 27:14Downing's 2-1 pitch in the second baseman, a strike at the knees, 2-2.
- 27:26Morgan muttering and shaking his head, now gets back in.
- 27:33Downing checks with Sims, and the 2-2 pitch on the way.
- 27:37Ground ball foul over the head of Hup Kettleton down the line, so still 2-2.
- 27:47Al Downing and Ken Forch in San Diego, Clay Kirby and John Cumberland, 1-0 Padres, bottom of the fourth.
- 27:55The next giant, Bob Barkin, drove in the only run of the game.
- 27:59Here's the 2-2 pitch to Morgan. Breaking ball, flaps to center, base hit, so boy are they going up the middle.
- 28:06Five hits and four of the five have been to Satterfield. The other was the full job inside third by Alou.
- 28:13Same, this country music, USA, will pour free coffee at Union 76's new Ontario 500 Auto Truck Stop
- 28:20across from the Ontario Speedway on I-10, grand opening November 1st.
- 28:26In San Diego, Clarence Gaston has opened up the bottom of the fourth, and he doubled.
- 28:32So the Padres leading 1-0, have a runner at second. Morgan getting something from Jim Mule.
- 28:44One out second, and in 4-0, as goes. Little Joe stole his 38th base, and you can bet he'll try and go for broken.
- 28:51This one tonight, leading 4-0. Downing looks at Morgan, now works to Daniel,
- 28:58a bouncer over the mound, over second, into Satterfield. Morgan will stop at second base, and here comes Walter Olson.
- 29:06A half a dozen hits against Downing, and five of the six have been up the middle.
- 29:14Well, he has certainly pitched a strange game. He struck out the side in the first inning, but gave up the four runs.
- 29:21And now he has given up two bases, with one out in the second inning.
- 29:27Well, the Dodgers went with their best tonight, 20-game winner Al Downing, and he didn't have it.
- 29:32And Olson gazing out towards the bullpen, where Doyle Alexander has been throwing, and he goes to Alexander.
- 29:40Well, there are Cinderella stories are few and far between in the big leagues.
- 29:44Certainly Al Downing's Cinderella story held up. It held up until tonight, and the clock struck 12 at about 8.32 here in Los Angeles.
- 29:53As Downing goes an inning and a third, and the dreams of 21 victories and leading the Dodgers on and closer to the pennants
- 30:01go down the drain at least for the moment, and for sure for him.
- 30:05So Downing comes out, and Doyle Alexander will be coming in.
- 30:10So the Astros have four, and with runners at first and second, and one out, they will have Bob Watson and Jim Winn.
- 30:18So they'll bring in the right hand. We've got some time. Let's spend it with Jerry.
- 30:22Hi, Vinnie. And a reminder about tomorrow night, we have the big fan appreciation night.
- 30:26How would you like to win a trip for two to wonderful Copenhagen on an SAS Scandinavian Airlines?
- 30:31A trip for two to New York with a weekend of shows flying aboard a TWA 747.
- 30:36Or how about a round trip for two to San Juan, Puerto Rico aboard an American Airlines luxury liner?
- 30:42A round trip for a couple to Hawaii aboard a United Airlines 747 featuring trader Vic Neal.
- 30:49These are four of the many prizes winning our fans.
- 30:52Tomorrow night, Dodger fan, appreciation night, and appreciation for Al Downing as it goes off in here at Penn.
- 31:02Al Downing back in June went two and two-third innings against the Astros.
- 31:07He gave up seven runs, but the Dodgers played poorly back of him. He only left two earned runs.
- 31:13It's hard to figure if he had been chased any earlier at all this year.
- 31:17Usually, the Downing trademark, even in the games he lost, he kept the Dodgers in the ballgames.
- 31:24So this is one of the few times he has been clobbered at all.
- 31:28So now Doyle Alexander, with runners at first and second and one out, will be pitching to Bob Watson followed by Jimmy Wynn.
- 31:37Four runs, half a dozen hits for the Astros.
- 31:40Whether by design or otherwise, the Astros had five of their six hits go to center field.
- 31:46Hey, Sue Salu, the only one to pull, he hit the ball inside third and down the line.
- 31:51The Padres, despite the double by Clarence Gaston, failed his score in the fourth inning.
- 31:57So at the end of four, it remains Padres one, Giants nothing.
- 32:04Doyle Alexander, six and six with the lead.
- 32:10In his sixth relief assignment, Alexander hasn't pitched much of late. The Dodgers have gotten very good pitching.
- 32:17And whenever a starter wobbled, it was always late in the game.
- 32:22In fact, you'd really have to go back on the 21st O-Scene, who was sick, when four and two third innings.
- 32:30Otherwise, Dodger's starting pitching has really held up.
- 32:34And I guess for Downing, among other things, it just triggered he'd finally be nailed.
- 32:39He had too many good numbers going for him tonight.
- 32:42Alexander's fastball to Watson is high, ball one.
- 32:45Downing had 18 consecutive scoreless innings. He had won six straight, nine of his last 11.
- 32:51He had allowed four earned runs in his last 41 innings, and he allowed that many in the first inning.
- 32:56So it was just the law of average night for Downing, and down he went.
- 33:00Watson takes the strike in the count of one and one.
- 33:08Four to nothing, Houston. The Giants are coming to bat in the fifth inning.
- 33:12The Padres leading one to nothing.
- 33:15Clay Kirby has had a rocky three of four innings work so far.
- 33:20I chop her to the right of the plate and foul.
- 33:23They'll throw to first, but they'll have to do it all over again.
- 33:26So Watson will come back into count one and two.
- 33:28The Giants in San Diego had runners at first and second in the first inning and couldn't score.
- 33:33They had runners at first and second in the second inning and couldn't score thanks to a fine play by Enzo Hernandez.
- 33:40The Giants had the bases loaded in the third inning and couldn't score.
- 33:45And then Kirby got them out quickly in the fourth.
- 33:48So now San Francisco comes up in the fifth inning, and the Padres leading one nothing.
- 33:54Bob Watson single to center in the first inning. His base hit, cash in Joe Morgan.
- 34:02Bob Watson hitting 287. 64 runs batted in.
- 34:07On deck, Jimmy Wynn.
- 34:10Morgan at second, Sadane you're at first, and a breaking ball is over.
- 34:14Strike three called to Bob Watson.
- 34:16Art Slider has moved on the outside corner.
- 34:19So two down and Jimmy Wynn coming up.
- 34:22Right field.
- 34:29Wynn singles in the first inning. He's one for one.
- 34:39Two down. Second inning, four nothing Houston.
- 34:42Wynn waiting. Runners at first and second.
- 34:44Alexander's fastball whipped in there for a strike on one.
- 34:49The Dodgers will have Crawford, Mota, and Simms in the bottom of the second inning.
- 34:56Alexander hands at his side, reading Duke Simms.
- 35:01Doyle shaking his head at Duke.
- 35:06Making Jim Wynn wait. Now he's ready.
- 35:08Strike one-fifths. Down and away. Good save by Simms. He skidded on his right knee. One and one.
- 35:18Tito Fuentes opened up the fifth inning in San Diego and grounded out.
- 35:21So there's one away, one nothing San Diego in the fifth.
- 35:25One ball and one strike. Did Jimmy Wynn?
- 35:29Alexander's fastball low and inside. Ball two, two, and one.
- 35:33Anything happens in San Diego, you'll get it practically as soon as it happens.
- 35:39Two and one. Did Jimmy Wynn?
- 35:44That would have Mays at the plate in San Diego, following Fuentes in the lineup.
- 35:51Alexander Ruddy and the two-one pitch. Outside. Ball three.
- 35:56Doyle tried to get that one the way he struck out Bob Watson, but this one moved too far off the plate.
- 36:01Three and one.
- 36:05Wynn hitting only two-oh-seven. Seven home runs, 44 RBIs.
- 36:12Downing at the belt. And the three-one pitch with Buckner breaking to the bag is a ball hit to Allen.
- 36:18He steps on third and that will retire the side.
- 36:22Buckner had broken to first place to handle that throw, and it's a good thing for Alexander that ball didn't go to the right side of the infield.
- 36:29And Buckner talking to Doyle now about making that pitch at that moment.
- 36:33No runs, two hits, two left. The end of an inning and a half. Astros four. Dodgers nothing.
- 36:41It's the grand opening of the mall. Continental Country Company State.
- 36:52Second inning. The outcourt leading to the left hand. Now McCartray put on the shift against McCovey, taking the change of play.
- 37:15Donald away at one-one. Ball in the right. Still be getting McCovey's look bad on him.
- 37:24Watson, a test play on the third.
- 37:28And hits the bounce. McCovey a test play.
- 37:33And a nice truck out in the 10. Left bond against him. One-one pitch. Floor on. Ball to right two.
- 37:46This is challenging McCovey and getting away with it here.
- 37:50He is in front of all the juice right.
- 37:54Getting number five. One to the left. But the power isn't back.
- 37:58That's three-one.
- 38:03Two-pitch.
- 38:05Ah, for a ball of two and two.
- 38:11Bobby bonds in the on deck. McCovey can get on with two down.
- 38:15Top of the pitch.
- 38:19There be two two-picks.
- 38:21Wide drive. They tip back and let the alive. McCovey singles this time, but would have scored two runs the last time.
- 38:28So the drives are hitting out of turn.
- 38:31A single for McCovey and Bobby Bob for that. It was two and down.
- 38:38Number five.
- 38:40Bob has wide out and the drives have had at least one base runner. And they're hitting with the four.
- 38:50What about Bobby's first?
- 38:54Outfield around to the left.
- 38:58On on a miss. Full family on the breaking pitch.
- 39:02Bob's weighing one place and then the clear ball going another.
- 39:06It's like one down.
- 39:09Two down.
- 39:11That's probably a basement.
- 39:13There be things that we can get a little extra on Sunday.
- 39:16He's really got some extra in that third inning. Running from second and third and nobody else.
- 39:22Bob's taking time.
- 39:24He went in last night. Bobby was in there trying to pull down that ball.
- 39:29And he swings.
- 39:31As far as any possible time is.
- 39:34Another square put out again.
- 39:36There be six tonight.
- 39:38A five for Bob and a one for McCovey.
- 39:41Well, it's off to the flat out for the first out on the second inning for the Dodgers.
- 39:46Houston leading four to nothing there. San Diego's in front one to nothing in this one.
- 39:56Down the ball on the strike to Bob.
- 39:58Right. The defending will be a little close.
- 40:01One one.
- 40:03That's a ball.
- 40:05Oh, that'll tangle the rest for the Dodgers.
- 40:09That'll be a trim for the Dodgers.
- 40:11There you go.
- 40:13That'll be a half for the Dodgers.
- 40:15Two and one counts of arms.
- 40:19That's probably a first.
- 40:23Two one down.
- 40:25Going on and there.
- 40:27Holding on another person's face.
- 40:29Bob walks right down the third base.
- 40:33That's Houston deep driving for them.
- 40:37Right out.
- 40:39Run up but slings over the plate.
- 40:48That's why it's really bothering him.
- 40:50I'm playing every day. It doesn't give him a chance to heal.
- 40:54You just have to.
- 40:57Two one two two. Four count of three and two. McCabe will be going.
- 41:11Both have three balls and two strikes to Bob.
- 41:13McCabe is first with two down.
- 41:15The Giants are hitting the pot race.
- 41:20He walks over the first with a line drive by Spoon.
- 41:27Then a good guy comes down and then comes up with a double play ball.
- 41:30There's all the men in the way.
- 41:32And Bob is third.
- 41:34Bob's going.
- 41:36All bounded away from the plate.
- 41:38McCabe was going.
- 41:40Bob fouled that break.
- 41:42What's got to be for this?
- 41:44Then looks to make sense ofcreative audience.
- 42:00There they 돼요 count their other half of the Pat sch авs.
- 42:12on one hit, no arms, and a runner left on.
- 42:16And at the end of five, it's score,
- 42:18or at the end of four and a half, it's score.
- 42:21The pie raise one and the Giants number.
- 42:24Valentine, the batters.
- 42:27Number two, Saga Bay.
- 42:30Valentine hitting 253.
- 42:33Valentine.
- 42:36So Bobby Valentine with two out,
- 42:41Moda at first, four nothing Astros in the second.
- 42:44Valentine, it's a pop fly into shallow right field.
- 42:47Morgan out, win in, it is win at the last minute.
- 42:52So a pop fly to the right field.
- 42:54There's no run to hit a man left, and at the end of two,
- 42:56Astros four, Dodgers nothing.
- 42:59It's not only what he does, but how he does it.
- 43:03Now that's another way of saying a certain athlete has a lot of spirit.
- 43:07And it's pretty much the same way you'd say a Union 76 dealer has spirit too.
- 43:12Because no matter what a Union 76 man does for you,
- 43:15you'll probably find he does it with a friendliness and courtesy
- 43:18that makes his place a pleasure to drive into.
- 43:21Simple things like giving directions or putting a little layer in that front tire
- 43:25are as important to him as they are to you.
- 43:28He knows that a lot of friendly help with the small problems
- 43:31brings you back when your car needs the other things that make it go.
- 43:35Doing business with a smile, that's the Union 76 man's way of doing things.
- 43:40If you like that kind of friendly service, drive in and sample our spirit.
- 43:45The spirit of 76 lives at Union Oil.
- 44:01At the end of two innings, the Astros four run, six hits.
- 44:04The Dodgers no runs, two hits.
- 44:06In San Diego, they move to the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 44:09Clay Kirby is still dodging bullets down there,
- 44:12and the Padres are leading the Giants one to nothing.
- 44:15Let's go to the third, and for more Play-By-Play, here's Jerry Doggett.
- 44:18Right, Vinnie, Alou, Minsky, and Howard will be up here now in the third inning.
- 44:21Alou has doubled a drive in a run, and then he scored a run after Minsky walked and Howard singles.
- 44:27The real crushing blow was the single by Howard that made it a four to nothing ball game.
- 44:31He really built up a big lead for the Astros, and now the Dodgers have a long hill to climb,
- 44:35and they have Doyle Alexander warming up.
- 44:39Here's some more of the gifts coming up for tomorrow night.
- 44:42A Toro Power lawnmower from Pennsylvania Lawn and Garden Shop,
- 44:45a Kawasaki mini bike from Kawasaki Motor Company,
- 44:49dinner for six at Lowry's, the prime rib,
- 44:52dinner for six at the Hungry Tiger restaurant of your choice.
- 44:55See you out here tomorrow.
- 44:58Hey, sister Alou coming to bat a double down the left field line in the first inning.
- 45:02Alou has always been a good hitter against the Dodgers.
- 45:05He's hitting 278 with two home runs and 39 runs batted in.
- 45:10So now Doyle Alexander setting on in his own after holding back the Astros in the second inning.
- 45:15The four runs against Downing came in the first inning.
- 45:18Alou is charged with six hits.
- 45:20Now the pitch on the way, bounced over the middle behind second base.
- 45:23Valentine scoops up off balance throw in time.
- 45:26Nice play by Bobby.
- 45:27One away as Alou downs out.
- 45:30That'll bring on Dennis Mink, he's a third baseman.
- 45:33He walked his first time up, Denny hitting 248.
- 45:36And the Dodgers batted in the bottom of the third.
- 45:38They start with Alexander, then Wills and Buckner.
- 45:40And Alexander is a good hitting pitcher so he might get a chance to stay in.
- 45:46All right, Minky steps in, one out in the third.
- 45:55Here's a fastball for a strike to Minky, and it is 0-1.
- 46:00The two outs, San Diego has Gideron with a double.
- 46:07Then Alexander, then Wills and Buckner, and Alexander is a good hitting pitcher so he might get a chance to stay in.
- 46:15All right, Minky steps in, one out in the third.
- 46:25There's a fastball for a strike to Menke, and it is 0-1.
- 46:30With two outs, San Diego has Dideron with a double.
- 46:34They lead 1-0.
- 46:36Alexander spits to Menke, his lower one ball and one strike.
- 46:391-1 the count.
- 46:43Menke hitting 2-48, playing a third base with Raderout for the rest of the year after an operation on his shoulder.
- 46:49One ball, one strike.
- 46:51Here's the pitch, fastball backhanded by Sims, and it's 2-1.
- 46:56Two balls, one strike.
- 47:032-1. Menke waiting again.
- 47:07On deck is Larry Howard, the catcher.
- 47:09Now the 2-1 pitch.
- 47:11Just missed with the fastball.
- 47:13Free ball to the strike to Menke, who walked his first time up.
- 47:16And now he has to count his way here in the third inning.
- 47:22The Giants are making a pitching change. Jerry Johnson is coming in to replace Cumberland, with two outs and a man on his second.
- 47:28There's a bing and a foul tipped in the glove, playing to the Menke.
- 47:33Free ball, two strikes. Dennis backs off for a moment.
- 47:36The Astros jumped off to four runs in the first inning and sent nine men to the plate.
- 47:41And opened up a big lead in the first inning against the Dodgers.
- 47:463-2 pitch. Alexander Reddy, here's his pitch.
- 47:49Line drive, over well to left field at the base hit.
- 47:52So Menke gets the base hit.
- 47:54Hit number seven for the Astros.
- 47:56That'll bring up the catcher, Larry Howard.
- 47:58So if you want to know the league standings, just check your newspaper.
- 48:01If you want to know how to dial long distance direct, just check the front pages of your telephone directory.
- 48:06Direct distance dialing is fast and easy.
- 48:14Larry Howard will be the batter.
- 48:16As Menke drilled a single to left field.
- 48:18That's the first hit allowed by Alexander.
- 48:20And the seventh for Houston.
- 48:22Big crowd on hand.
- 48:24And tomorrow night, fan appreciation night, we'll have a near capacity crowd.
- 48:28Fastball low outside, backhanded, and it is one ball, no strikes.
- 48:44Sims and Alexander are having a talk now.
- 48:47One ball and no strikes. Sims might have been crossed up on that first pitch.
- 48:53All right, Duke comes back behind the plate.
- 48:58One ball and no strikes to Larry Howard, the catcher, with Ken Forge, the pitcher, due up next.
- 49:04Astros four, Dodgers nothing. San Diego one, Giants nothing.
- 49:07They're in the fifth inning.
- 49:09We're in the third.
- 49:11Here's the pitch on the way to Howard.
- 49:13Breaking ball is a strike and it's one and one.
- 49:15The Dodgers set the infield of a play-depth.
- 49:18At home on the year, the Dodgers 41 wins, 38 losses.
- 49:21They are 88 and 72 on the year.
- 49:26Pitch high for ball, two and one.
- 49:29The Dodgers need a sweep to keep their hopes alive, and of course they would still have to have help.
- 49:38Two and one. Alexander checking again.
- 49:43Now the stretch on the look and the pitch on the way.
- 49:46Foul back of the checky swing and the count is two-two.
- 49:54Two-two the count. Howard backs out.
- 50:05All right, two and two to Howard, and again Alexander looks over.
- 50:09Menke is short lead the pitch. Foul tipped at the plate, count stays two-two.
- 50:22Two and two.
- 50:25Howard backs out a moment. Salty Parker coaching a third. Hubkittle a first.
- 50:31With one out, the Astros have a base runner. Menke is a single.
- 50:34Howard the catcher waiting, two-twenty average.
- 50:37Curve, strike three call.
- 50:40With the outside corner with it and it's two down now.
- 50:43Strikeout number two for Alexander.
- 50:45The batter will be the pitcher Ken Forch.
- 50:55Ken Forch coming up with two outs. Menke waiting on first base.
- 51:01Houston leads four to nothing. The Dodgers of course, hoping to get some strong relief pitching now
- 51:05to keep them in check so they can make a run at them.
- 51:08Can't let the Astros get too much more of a lead.
- 51:11There's a liner to right field, dropped for a base hit.
- 51:14Crawford will throw the first base and he does not get him.
- 51:17Pulls Buckner off the bag. He made a good try and almost had him.
- 51:22A line drives to right field, dropped for a base hit, but Crawford made it close
- 51:26by firing to Buckner but he pulled him off the bag.
- 51:29So the pitcher four singles and down to second base goes Menke.
- 51:33That is the eighth hit for Houston.
- 51:36There's a pitcher line to single into right.
- 51:38And here's the leadoff batter Roger Metzger coming up.
- 51:44Jerry Johnson strikes out, Nate Colbert on the side, retired for the Padres.
- 51:48The end of five, one to nothing in favor of San Diego.
- 51:52Jerry Johnson now against Clay Kirby.
- 51:55Metzger, the leadoff man, has grounded out and struck out.
- 51:58The Astros have two on against Doyle on singles by Menke and the pitcher fours.
- 52:03Fastball is away, one ball and no strike.
- 52:07One-oh to count, third inning.
- 52:18Now the one-oh pitch.
- 52:20Taps towards second base.
- 52:21Valentine waits for the hot-speeds. Will for the force-off there and the side retires.
- 52:25So they're down to the third, no runs, two hits, and the Astros leave two.
- 52:31They have left six and the score at the end of two and a half.
- 52:33Houston four, the Dodgers nothing.
- 52:36Schlitz, Milwaukee and the world.
- 52:39Shку arkadaşlar встанет.
- 52:48The field was 12 hours of dead 63.
- 52:53Joining the circle of 20 game winners this season was Steve Carlton of the Cardinals,
- 52:58Andy Nutter Smith of the Angels, and Gil Coleman of the Detroit Tigers, formerly of the Washington Senators.
- 53:05And the reason a lot of those fans in Washington were a little bit down in all their shorts.
- 53:10The next heat will be the drive middle, matter of the six. The father of the league wasn't up.
- 53:19Now that's a long three of those over the first five, but he has the same results as he did in Gavildon Park
- 53:27when he went through the first seven in an engine perfect fashion.
- 53:31He's turning the first 21 he's made.
- 53:40Now the Dodgers come on in the bottom of the third. They will start with a pitcher Doyle Alexander,
- 53:44then Maury Willson, Bill Buckner against Ken Force, who's allowed two singles.
- 53:48Force flanked the Dodgers earlier in the year and lost a tough one to them.
- 53:52So he has been double tough against them in his outings against them.
- 53:56Ken is one and one on the season, seven and eight against the league and a two-six-six-turns-run average.
- 54:01So the Dodgers have their hands full now tonight. Doyle Alexander, a good-hitting pitcher comes up.
- 54:06Doyle has nine for 32. That's better than a two-fifty average. He has two RBIs.
- 54:14At the end of five in San Diego, the Padres leading one to nothing.
- 54:17Clay Kirby now against Jerry Johnson.
- 54:21All right, here is Alexander at bat in the third. Dodgers trying to get busy.
- 54:26Force delivers and Doyle takes high ball one. Force has not walked a batter.
- 54:30He got struck out one. He got Sims in the second.
- 54:364-0 in favor of Houston. Now the pitch. Doyle fouls it away off first base side.
- 54:41Strike one, one and one to Doyle. This is game number 161, home game number 80.
- 54:51So right down to the final two and still not decided.
- 54:55Fast ball high, ball two and it's a 2-1 count now.
- 54:58Force might get tired a little later if the Dodgers can stay close.
- 55:02And he reported that he was in 13 innings of that big ball game in San Diego the other night when Kirby went 15.
- 55:082-1 pitch, high again, ball three and it's three and one now to Doyle.
- 55:15So the Dodgers, who fell behind by four, trying to tip away.
- 55:19Have a 3-1 count to the pitcher, wind up and down it's count.
- 55:23Strike two, now it's a full count. He's going to have to come in with another one.
- 55:27So Alexander ready to swing away on a 3-2 count.
- 55:32Here's the wind up by Force.
- 55:35Popped up into right field, Jimmy Wynn in his track.
- 55:38Waiting pops the glove, now moves his step and handles it.
- 55:41So one away, high fly to right. Here's Wills. He's swingled his first time up.
- 55:46Maury batting 279.
- 55:51All right, there is one out in the third.
- 56:02The Giants have two outs in the sixth inning, facing Kirby.
- 56:07Here's the pitch to Wills.
- 56:10Breaking ball is a strike at the inside corner and it is 0-1.
- 56:14Third inning.
- 56:18Maury single defender, first time up.
- 56:21Loops one foul off third base, that'll carry out a play.
- 56:24And the count, strike two to Wills.
- 56:26Ken Force, big right-hander, was involved in a shuffle with the Dodgers
- 56:33and Willie Crawford earlier in the year in Houston. That was in September.
- 56:37Wills pops a foul, back out of play.
- 56:41Count stays, strike two to Maury.
- 56:45Crowd including straight A students tonight could approach the 40,000 mark.
- 56:49We have a huge turnout.
- 56:51High foul outside of third. Wills, a little late, might have broken his back.
- 56:56Maury comes back, he's going to test it. It's okay.
- 56:59Strike two, count's still up there.
- 57:02They play Wills well around to the left.
- 57:04Alou shades the line in left field.
- 57:06Menti, near the bag, is third.
- 57:09Now Maury backs out.
- 57:11The Dodgers have no runs, two hits.
- 57:13The Astros, four runs and eight hits. Ken Force working.
- 57:18It's 0-2 and the pick's on the way.
- 57:21Caps toward third and it is foul ball.
- 57:24Foul ball. Menti picks it up and gives it back to the pitcher.
- 57:29Wills had crossed first base, now comes back again.
- 57:35So it is 0-2 to Maury.
- 57:41With two outs, the Giants have a baserunner on a walk.
- 57:50Fires a walk.
- 57:55Here's a pitch to Wills.
- 57:57Caps toward second. Morgan backs up, waits for a hop, puts the first in time and we have two outs.
- 58:02Let's pause for station identification.
- 58:04This is the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
- 58:07The pitcher left field is first time up. Billy hitting 276, facing Force.
- 58:12A fling and a foul. Caps at the plate. Strike one. 0-1 to count.
- 58:17We're in the bottom of the third inning.
- 58:220-1 to count.
- 58:33Second inning. Second time. Big right-hander, Ken Force.
- 58:38Now the pitch on the way to Buckner.
- 58:40Line drive, base hit the left-center field. Could get through.
- 58:43Here's Buckner around. Heads the two. The ball is at the wall.
- 58:46Billy's at second base and holds on a double and Savaniel brings it back in.
- 58:51So Buckner doubles up the gap in left center.
- 58:55And with two down, Willie Davis, the batter, grounded into a fourth out his first time up.
- 58:59Willie batting 311.
- 59:08The Giants are out in the sixth inning and here's Willie Davis at bat.
- 59:11It is 1-0 in San Diego, 4-0 in Houston.
- 59:15We're in the third, they're in the sixth.
- 59:18All right, Willie Davis up now trying to get the Dodgers on the scoreboard
- 59:21and every little run would help down a situation like this.
- 59:24So Davis knows it. Here's the pitch.
- 59:26Foul out of play, got a fast ball in on the hand.
- 59:29Strike one, 0-1 the count to Willie Davis, Richie Allen on deck.
- 59:34Boy, the fans really want to break loose here tonight,
- 59:37but they got the real choked up on that first inning when the Astros came in with four big ones.
- 59:44Now they're trying to get something going here.
- 59:47Strike one count. Davis waiting, Buckner on second base.
- 59:51Ken Force ready to go with it. Two out.
- 59:54Here's the look now on the pitch on the way to Willie.
- 59:57Flawn and then strike two, went for a low fast ball,
- 1:00:00and now Howard goes out to have a talk with his pitcher.
- 1:00:05They're going to the bottom of the sixth in San Diego.
- 1:00:08The Padres lead 1-0. Kirby.
- 1:00:11Tomorrow night it'll be Roberts.
- 1:00:14The Dodgers have to help themselves. They trail by four.
- 1:00:19Richie Allen leaning on deck off to the left.
- 1:00:23Willie Davis at the plate. Strike two count to Willie.
- 1:00:26Three Dodgers up there. He has ten home runs and 74 RBI's trying to get on base for Richie.
- 1:00:32Here's the 0-2 pitch.
- 1:00:34Line drive foul. It under the stands in right field.
- 1:00:37He got a curve ball and hit it too soon and pulled it away foul.
- 1:00:43Willie with ten home runs, 74 RBI's and a 3-11 average.
- 1:00:48The Dodgers have a team average of 266, the Astros 241.
- 1:00:54Alright, Buckner away from second base. Davis waiting, still strike two.
- 1:00:58Here's the look by Forth and the pitch.
- 1:01:01That's over the middle behind second base. Morgan over.
- 1:01:03Off balance ball is in time. Davis out on a close play at first on the stretch by Washington.
- 1:01:10So, Willie is out. Good play by Morgan to get him.
- 1:01:13The Dodgers, no runs, one hit and the man left, they've left three through three innings.
- 1:01:18And the score at the end of three, the Astros four, the Dodgers nothing.
- 1:01:22Have you ever considered that the labels on the food you buy are a lot like a scoreboard?
- 1:01:26They're packed with information and what they tell you can often save you money.
- 1:01:30Next time you're in the delicatessen section of your market, take a good look at the packages of sliced cooked ham.
- 1:01:36You'll see that most contain only four ounces of ham, but Farmer John's is a full five ounces,
- 1:01:42an ounce more than most of the rest.
- 1:01:44Yet the five ounce package of Farmer John ham often costs less than the smaller packages.
- 1:01:49In fact, every package of Farmer John luncheon meat is five ounces to give you more for your money.
- 1:01:55And his delicious variety includes all meat ballona, Italian style cotto salami, ham roll, and head cheese.
- 1:02:02Once again, each and every one is a full five ounces, not four, but five.
- 1:02:07See for yourself next time you shop. Look for Farmer John luncheon meats in the delicatessen section of your market and save.
- 1:02:14By the way, if you don't see them, speak up. Ask for them. Farmer John luncheon meats. You can't go wrong.
- 1:02:25Well, we've played three innings out of this. Four to nothing Houston on eight.
- 1:02:28The Dodgers have three. Doyle and Alexander all set to go to work into the fourth.
- 1:02:32The Astros coming to bat, more play here spinning.
- 1:02:35But, Jerry, I couldn't help thinking of the contrast between last night and tonight as far as the game here at Dodger Stadium.
- 1:02:42Tonight, as we go to the fourth inning, we played three innings in an hour and oh two or three minutes.
- 1:02:48Last night the entire game took an hour and thirty seven.
- 1:02:55Joe Morgan, Cesar Cedeno, and Bob Watson in that order in the fourth.
- 1:03:00They got them all in the first inning. Four runs on four hits against number 44, Al Downing.
- 1:03:08Doyle Alexander picking up four and the right hand is pitched low and inside off Sims Love. One and all to count.
- 1:03:15In San Diego, Ollie Brown has opened up with a single and the next batter promptly hit into a double play.
- 1:03:32As Jerry Johnson pitching for the Giants in relief of John Cumberland, he came in to save Cumberland a tough spot by striking out Nate Colbert.
- 1:03:43And it is Clay Kirby, pitching another strong effort, incredibly so.
- 1:03:49Through six, the pitch is lifted to right center. Davis coming in a hurry and one handed on the run. Made it look easy.
- 1:03:58One away, drive all the right centers and here it stays Cesar Cedeno, the center fielder, struck out and single.
- 1:04:13Four runs, eight hits. The Dodgers no runs, three hits. Astros have had at least one hit in every inning.
- 1:04:22We have really come out swinging. Oddly enough, the Astros have not hit much against the Dodgers all year.
- 1:04:29The team batting average for Houston against Dodger pitching prior to tonight only 229. Cedeno takes a strike.
- 1:04:38Cedeno is one fellow who has worn the Dodgers out. He has 23 hits against them.
- 1:04:48He is going to be quite a player this fella. Strike one, pitch to Cedeno, low one and one.
- 1:04:54They asked a little bit too much of him this year. In other words, he came up last year, hit 290 in the last two months or so.
- 1:05:01And naturally had the label can't miss and expected him, I guess, to hit 350. But it is a lot tougher.
- 1:05:08The pitch to Cedeno outside, ball two, two and one. The Padres are out now in the sixth inning.
- 1:05:14So the end of sixth in San Diego. It remains Padres one, Giants nothing.
- 1:05:22Two and one to count to Cesar Cedeno. Alexander checking, Cesar waiting.
- 1:05:31Right-handed delivers on the hands and it's hit foul outside at first. New stick for Cedeno. He chipped that one.
- 1:05:38Cedeno has done one thing, however, the prophets can boast about. He is leading the Astros in RBI.
- 1:05:49He has 80. He's going to be a, well he has all of the tools. He can do everything.
- 1:05:55He can run and throw and hit and hit with power. And he's just 21. He's just a kid.
- 1:06:02Two, two pitches, Cesar. Fast ball. Hit to the hole at short. Knocked down, but that's all by Wills.
- 1:06:08Even had he fielded the ball plainly, it is doubtfully to have been able to throw Cedeno out. He runs too well for that.
- 1:06:15So Cedeno has 24 hits against the Dodgers. And the battle will be Bob Watson.
- 1:06:31In the seventh inning, when the Giants come up, they will have Ken Henderson, Tito Fuentes, and Willie Mays.
- 1:06:37And if anybody gets on Willie McCovey, as we said, as soon as anything happens, you've got it.
- 1:06:43The pitch to Watson, breaking ball, swung on and missed, oh and one.
- 1:06:55Oh and one accounts to Bob Watson. Cedeno held on by Bill Buckner. Fourth inning, Astros four, Dodgers nothing.
- 1:07:02Throw to first base, close, with Cedeno back standing up.
- 1:07:09The only run in that Padres game was run as at first and third.
- 1:07:12Barton hit a high bouncer back towards the box that Cumberland knocked down.
- 1:07:16But his only play was to first and the only run scored.
- 1:07:20Henderson has opened up with a single to left field. Seventh inning.
- 1:07:25Strike one pitch to Watson as a high fly ball into deep left center.
- 1:07:29Back goes Davis to the wall, leaps up and it's gone. A home run and that makes it six to nothing, Houston.
- 1:07:38And for the Dodgers tonight, their only hope rests in the city of San Diego.
- 1:07:44Six runs and ten hits for the Astros who have really come out swinging nice and loose.
- 1:07:51So Watson touching them all. For Bob, it is nine home run. He now has 66 runs batted in.
- 1:08:00He's driven in three tonight.
- 1:08:09If the Giants and Dodgers lose tonight, the Giants have clinched a mathematical tie.
- 1:08:14And then they would be one in front with each with one left.
- 1:08:17The bouncer back to Alexander and Doyle throws to Buckner for the out.
- 1:08:21However, if the Dodgers lose and the Giants win, that'll be it.
- 1:08:28So it's six to nothing, Houston in the fourth inning. Kenny Henderson has singled to open up to seventh.
- 1:08:34Tito Fuentes has sacrificed Ken Henderson to second base. And with one out and Henderson at second,
- 1:08:40it'll be Willie Mays and Willie McCovey against Clay Kirby who has turned in a remarkable effort.
- 1:08:48Kirby must be one of the stronger men in the league.
- 1:08:52The pitch to Alou, a slicer, two hoppers down to Valentine who throws him out.
- 1:08:57The Astros go, but they pick up two runs. Two hits, the end of three and a half.
- 1:09:02The Astros six, Dodgers nothing.
- 1:09:07Do you remember the guy you went out with just before you met Ken?
- 1:09:10Dennis, the one who gave me the minnow net for my birthday.
- 1:09:13Right, crazy Dennis. Didn't he propose to you?
- 1:09:16On our fifth and last fishing trip. He said I was the only girl he'd ever met.
- 1:09:20We knew how to row.
- 1:09:22Oh, hey, I'm going to make us some coffee.
- 1:09:25Oh look, I'm not going to stay there.
- 1:09:27When people are enjoying each other's company, it's a natural time to enjoy coffee.
- 1:09:31These are the moments MJB is made for.
- 1:09:36We know how much a good rich cup of hot coffee adds to these little get-togethers.
- 1:09:41So we make sure that MJB always tastes as good as you remember it.
- 1:09:46Full flavored, but without any bitter acidity taste.
- 1:09:51MJB, the coffee that never disappoints.
- 1:09:54Can you coffee and you'll never get rid of me?
- 1:09:56Look, as long as you're here, I have an excuse for not working.
- 1:10:00MJB, there's a lot of care in every cup.
- 1:10:06Bottom of the fourth inning with the Astros leading the Dodgers 6-0.
- 1:10:11And Ken Foers getting ready to pitch to Richie Allen, Willie Crawford, and Manny Moda.
- 1:10:17In San Diego, 1-0 Padre, seventh inning, Kenny Henderson at second base.
- 1:10:24And to count to Willie Mays, two balls and one strike with Willie McCovey on deck.
- 1:10:31Richie Allen flied to right field in the first inning. He's 0-1.
- 1:10:34The pitch to Rich, ground ball to shortstop.
- 1:10:36Netski gloves it just about at his nose and throws him out. One away.
- 1:10:42The way Foers is pitching and the way the Astros have been hitting, the Dodgers have only one chance.
- 1:10:48Clay Kirby and the Padres.
- 1:10:52The count to Willie Mays is 2-2 with one out, Henderson at second base.
- 1:10:571-0 Padres in the seventh.
- 1:11:00And Kirby, it's really, the more you know about baseball, the more you realize what a job he is doing tonight.
- 1:11:07Here's the pitch to Willie Crawford, a strike.
- 1:11:10He made 234 pitches Friday night.
- 1:11:14To do that any time of the year is hard to believe, but late in September, wow.
- 1:11:19And now he's pitching a tough shutout so far tonight. He has gone 3-2 to Willie Mays.
- 1:11:25So a full count to Mays, Henderson at second, one out in the seventh.
- 1:11:29And the Astros leading the Dodgers here, 6-0.
- 1:11:32Here's the 1-1 pitch to Crawford.
- 1:11:35Half swing, but he held up. Gorman checking the line umpires who do not make a gesture.
- 1:11:40That means ball two, 2-1.
- 1:11:42Mays struck out on a 3-2 pitch.
- 1:11:45So there are two outs.
- 1:11:48Willie Mays has suddenly gotten to be an old man.
- 1:11:51There's a high pop fly back at third base.
- 1:11:54Menke and Metzger, and Metzger making the catch and foul ground.
- 1:11:58Now that is certainly not a knock.
- 1:12:00If I ever really marveled at a player's ability, it would be Willie Mays down through the years.
- 1:12:05What I mean is I will almost bet that in the last, how many at-bats he's had over the last 20 games,
- 1:12:12he has struck out at least half the time, at least half.
- 1:12:16And Mays, when he just struck out, has struck out for the 121st time this year.
- 1:12:21And boy, that's not like Willie.
- 1:12:24They're not going to fool with McCovey. They'll walk him.
- 1:12:26There's a bunch by Moda, foul, and McAllen won.
- 1:12:30So in a moment, the Giants will have runners at first and second, two out, and Bobby Barnes,
- 1:12:37who went out for a full muscle, he'll have to give way to Dave Kingman.
- 1:12:43So the youngster from SC will be on the spot in a moment in San Diego, Dave Kingman.
- 1:12:49Here's the strike one pitch to Manny Moda, fourth deal, foul back in the count of 0 and 2.
- 1:12:59Bobby Barnes covered a full muscle, so Kingman will be the man on the spot.
- 1:13:07So McCovey is getting the intentional walk.
- 1:13:09Here's the strike two pitch to Moda, breaking ball outside, ball one, one and two.
- 1:13:15So about Mays, he's saying how he has struck out half of his at-batch over the last 10 days at least.
- 1:13:20He has struck out two out of four times tonight.
- 1:13:24One and two, the count to Manny Moda. Here comes fourth, and it's flung on in mid-strike three.
- 1:13:30So down goes Manny and the Dodgers, and at the end of four, at throw six, Dodgers nothing.
- 1:13:37When an athlete hears the fanziel charge, he usually puts a little more spirit into his performance.
- 1:13:43When you say charge with a Union 76 credit card, you get a more spirited performance too,
- 1:13:49because Union 76 is the first major gasoline company throughout the West to offer you revolving credit.
- 1:13:56And revolving credit means that now you can charge the tires, batteries, and other automotive accessories you need with no fuss,
- 1:14:05no complicated contracts to sign, no three, six, or 12-month deadlines to meet.
- 1:14:10Why, it's just like shopping with a department store credit card, and in addition to the fine products and services at your Union Oil dealers.
- 1:14:18A Union 76 credit card is good at such places as major car rental agencies and over 500 motels and inns.
- 1:14:26Pick up a credit card application from your Union 76 dealer and get the spirit.
- 1:14:31The spirit of 76 lives at Union Oil.
- 1:14:38We go to the fifth inning with the Astros leading the Dodgers six to nothing.
- 1:14:41After McCovey was walked intentionally, Dave Kingman singled home the tying run.
- 1:14:47Kenny Henderson scored on the single by Kingman, so the Giants and Padres are even 1-1.
- 1:14:53On the base hit, McCovey went to third, and the batter will be Dick Deets.
- 1:14:59And Deets hit into a fourth play, so the inning is over.
- 1:15:03However, the Giants got a run, and at the end of sixth and a half innings, the Giants and the Padres are tied 1-1.
- 1:15:10The Dodgers are tied up in knots. The Astros leading them six to nothing.
- 1:15:18Dennis Menke.
- 1:15:20Dennis Menke, Larry Howard, and Ken Fort in that order.
- 1:15:26They are now posting the details of the seventh inning where the Giants scored the tying run.
- 1:15:32And now here's Menke at the plate, walked and singled.
- 1:15:36Alexander delivers, breaking ball down and away, ball one.
- 1:15:40Doyle has been fine until a two-run home run in the fourth inning by Bob Watson, still think all over his book.
- 1:15:48Doyle checking, Menke waiting, and the 1-0 pitch on the way.
- 1:15:53Low and outside, ball two.
- 1:15:56This figures to be Alexander's last inning of work.
- 1:15:59He is due to bat third when he comes up in the fifth inning.
- 1:16:06The pitch is outside, ball three.
- 1:16:10So Dave Kingham, the kid from SC who spent the year at Phoenix and has come up with so many timely base hits,
- 1:16:19singled home the tying run, and they're putting up the play-by-play on the message board now.
- 1:16:23The pitch is tight, three and one.
- 1:16:25Deets grounded out to end the inning, and it'll be the bottom of the San Diego lineup.
- 1:16:30Bob Barton, Clay Kirby, and then Tommy Dean the shortstop when the Padres hit in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:16:38Here's the three-one pitch on the way, strike on the outside corner, three and two.
- 1:16:43Six runs on ten hits to the Astros, no run, three hits for the Dodgers.
- 1:16:53Boy, it sure looks like the Giants have a star of the future, in fact, of the present in that Kingman.
- 1:16:58Pitch fouled away, three and two.
- 1:17:01In fact, the Giants, to give them their just desserts, lost Kingman for over 12 days.
- 1:17:08Rod with an appendectomy, and then came right back even after he had been in the hospital to play almost immediately.
- 1:17:14He's a remarkable young man, Dave Kingman.
- 1:17:17Rod Dado is quoted as saying he's the finest player he's ever had at SC, and of course, Rod has had a room full.
- 1:17:24Here's the three-two pitch to Menke, inside off-sims, met Dennis Cotting to first base on ball four.
- 1:17:33Catcher Larry Howard coming up.
- 1:17:36Howard, single to Satters to drive in two runs and struck out.
- 1:17:43He's one for two.
- 1:17:46When the Dodgers bat in the fifth, they have Sims, Valentine, and Alexander's spot, and they'll get somebody up in the bullpen in a moment.
- 1:17:53Jose Pena will be the Dodger to get up in the pen.
- 1:17:58Alexander, hands to the sides, right hand hitting Howard at the plate, Doyle delivers.
- 1:18:02Fast ball high, ball one.
- 1:18:04Astros got four in the first inning to banish Al Downing, and they added two more against Alexander in the fourth.
- 1:18:11The Dodgers, meanwhile, have gotten one man to second base.
- 1:18:14That was Buckner, who doubled in the third.
- 1:18:16So four has been very tough.
- 1:18:22The one-oh pitch is a slow dribbler towards Richie Allen.
- 1:18:25Takes a good hop for him, and he's able to throw him out.
- 1:18:28Howard has not run well.
- 1:18:30On to play Menke advances to second.
- 1:18:32Bob Barton, the ex-giant who drove in the Padres' run with an infield out, this time gets an infield single.
- 1:18:40Opening up matters in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:18:42That'll bring up Clay Kirby, and of course, he figures he's bunting.
- 1:18:55Preston Gomez piloting the Padres, and we'll see about Clay Kirby.
- 1:19:03Kirby tried to sacrifice and missed the bunt.
- 1:19:07The pitch swung on and missed, and Barton, who was on first base, was caught in a run down and tagged out.
- 1:19:14So Barton opened up with a single, but now there's one out and the bases are empty, and Kirby missed the bunt in the count-o-and-one.
- 1:19:24Ken Forch, a pretty good-hitting pitcher at the plate.
- 1:19:29Alexander delivers.
- 1:19:30Line drive.
- 1:19:31Base hits the center.
- 1:19:32Outside, two for three, and they're going to hold Menke at third base.
- 1:19:36Ball cut off by Buckner.
- 1:19:38So a line single to center for Ken Forch.
- 1:19:41That's his second hit.
- 1:19:43First and third, one out in the fifth, and Roger Metzger the batter.
- 1:19:48Roger Metzger.
- 1:19:50It's one-one, San Diego in the Giants, bottom of the seventh inning with one out, pitcher Clay Kirby is at the plate.
- 1:19:57That was a rather expensive bunt-and-run play.
- 1:20:00Of course, Gomez, with a slow runner Barton on the bases, tried to give him a head start, but Kirby, when he missed the bunt, then Barton was exposed and nailed easily.
- 1:20:13Mesker has struck out, rounded to third and hit into a fourth play.
- 1:20:17The switch-hitting shortstop is 0 for 3.
- 1:20:21The Astros trying to get a ton now.
- 1:20:23They're leading 6-0.
- 1:20:25Clay Kirby has struck out, so there are two outs in San Diego.
- 1:20:30And Tommy Dean, who is playing shortstop now, Lorenzo Hernandez, is in the leadoff spot.
- 1:20:35Tommy, the next Dodger, will be coming up.
- 1:20:50The pitch is squeezed and it's missed, and they have got Minky hung up, and the throw is to Allen, and Minky's already passed him.
- 1:20:58And the Dodgers miss one there.
- 1:21:07Roger Mesker tried to squeeze home Minky and missed the bunt, and Minky would have been a dead duck.
- 1:21:15But by the time sent through the ball to Richie Allen, Minky had just passed Richie.
- 1:21:21Meanwhile, Ken Forch moved to second base.
- 1:21:26So the Astros have run as a second and third with one out.
- 1:21:290-1 the count to Minky.
- 1:21:32Minky at third, Mesker at the plate.
- 1:21:34They might even try to squeeze again.
- 1:21:37The infield is up. Alexander's going to come out of a windup anyway.
- 1:21:40And the pitch to Mesker, a high bouncer, speared by Valentine.
- 1:21:44He has no play but first base.
- 1:21:46Minky scores, Forch takes third, and the Astros have done it.
- 1:21:50It's 7-11 now.
- 1:21:52Seven runs, 11 hits. 7-0 Houston, and Joe Morgan will be coming out.
- 1:22:01So a run batted in for Roger Mesker, the run that the Dodgers let stay alive.
- 1:22:14Two down, Forch at third base, and the pitch is a bouncer knocked down by Alexander.
- 1:22:19He picks it up, fires, and Buckner can't hold on to a high throw.
- 1:22:24Forch scores, it is 8-0 in favor of the Astros.
- 1:22:34So Alexander will get an error.
- 1:22:38Doyle is 21 years old, and he's in a pretty tough ballgame.
- 1:22:43When you're 21 and you're exposed to this kind of pressure, he knocks the ball down,
- 1:22:47and then hurried a high throw to first base.
- 1:22:51No, it is 8-0 Houston, and the battle will be Cesar Cedeno.
- 1:23:08With two out in the seventh inning at San Diego, Tommy Dean has just walked.
- 1:23:17Alexander at the bell then delivers, and Cedeno takes the strike. 0-1.
- 1:23:22Well, for the Giants, it's right there waiting for them.
- 1:23:25That is to say, the Dodgers are buried underneath an 8-0 hill,
- 1:23:30and the Giants are 1-1 with the Padres, seventh inning.
- 1:23:34Here's the strike one pitch instead at the throw to first.
- 1:23:37Morgan hops back to the bag. Little Joe with 38 stolen bases.
- 1:23:46Don Mason, the left-hand-hitting second baseman and ex-Giant, is at the plate for the Padres.
- 1:23:52Strike one pitch is a broken bat, one hopper that Allen takes from Wills and throws to Valentine.
- 1:23:585-4, fourth play.
- 1:24:03Dave Johnson, who has done it before while trying to keep Tommy Dean on, has balked into second.
- 1:24:11So Johnson's having a terrible time lately in the cluts.
- 1:24:14Meanwhile, the Dodgers aren't doing very well.
- 1:24:16The Astros get two more runs on one hit on an error. A man left.
- 1:24:20At the end of 4-1-1, Astros 8, Dodgers nothing.
- 1:24:24Schlitz, Milwaukee in the world.
- 1:24:46You only get one chance at life, and you can't be afraid to live it,
- 1:24:50because second chances never come, but you wouldn't have it any other way.
- 1:24:54Same with your beer. You wouldn't have it any other way either.
- 1:24:57Schlitz, life's settled for less. You ran a Schlitz. You ran a beer.
- 1:25:26Bottom of the fifth inning, the Astros leading the Dodgers 8-0 in San Diego with two outs.
- 1:25:32Tommy Dean, an ex-Dodger, walked.
- 1:25:35Gary Johnson balked him to second, and Johnson is now pitching to an ex-Giant.
- 1:25:40And the ballgame is tied 1-1.
- 1:25:42Don Mason, left hand hitting second baseman, is up there with a chance to break the tie in San Diego.
- 1:25:51Duke Sinem, Bobby Valentine, and the hitter, Fidoil Alexander.
- 1:25:56That would figure here in the fifth inning.
- 1:25:58The Astros 8-0 out in front.
- 1:26:01Force delivers, and it's popped up on the left side.
- 1:26:04Menke, crossing the foul line.
- 1:26:06Dennis, waiting, and makes the catch.
- 1:26:08One away. A sports cessation identification.
- 1:26:11This is the Los Angeles Patriots Radio Network.
- 1:26:13Hi, this is Dave Fisher reminding you to stay tuned for more of me right after the Dodger game
- 1:26:18here on KTAR in Phoenix, Arizona.
- 1:26:21We'll be back from Bill Johnson's Big Apple.
- 1:26:26The batter is Bobby Valentine. He takes a strike in the count of 0-1-1.
- 1:26:30Eight runs on 11 hits. It's just not been any contest here tonight.
- 1:26:35It's been all Houston. The strike one-fits. Valentine pops it up.
- 1:26:39Bob Watson is waiting and waiting and makes the catch. Two down.
- 1:26:48So the Dodgers involved in one of their poorer efforts of the year,
- 1:26:51and certainly the worst game they have played in weeks, and it has popped up tonight.
- 1:26:58Bill Siveka coming up to hit for Fidoil Alexander.
- 1:27:01Standing for Alexander, number 16, Bill Siveka.
- 1:27:09In San Diego, Don Mason is at the plate, and the count has reached 2-2.
- 1:27:14Tommy Dean at second base, 2 out in the seventh inning, and that game tied 1-1.
- 1:27:19Boy, that's another ironic situation. Dean the ex-Dodger at second, Mason the ex-Giant at the plate.
- 1:27:27Joe Moeller is up throwing instead of Jose Pena. The count to Mason has gone to 3-2.
- 1:27:35Sudeikis hitting for Alexander, takes two pitches, one ball and one strike to count.
- 1:27:41After Mason, you start getting down into the hitters in the San Diego lineup.
- 1:27:46On deck is center fielder Johnny Jeter.
- 1:27:49Sudsy hits a fly ball to right field. Jimmy Winn moves back and over to his right a bit, just waiting,
- 1:27:54and puts that away, and that's just what Forch has been doing, putting the Dodgers away.
- 1:27:59He's retired the last seven in a row, and at the end of five, Astros 8 dodges nothing.
- 1:28:15Sometimes when the ball club is out of town, Farmer John flies back east to the famous corn country.
- 1:28:21He enjoys it there, he says, because the air is like it used to be everywhere, clear and clean and fresh.
- 1:28:27It's real country farmland with mile after mile of tall green corn as far as you can see.
- 1:28:32In fact, so much corn is grown that they can afford to use it as feed.
- 1:28:36Well, that's why pork from this heartland of America is the finest in the world.
- 1:28:40Farmer John uses only this pork to make his ham, and more than that, because he's a pickler for freshness,
- 1:28:47he brings it out here live, and it's U.S. inspected and dressed fresh right here in the West.
- 1:28:52Most packers ship their pork in frozen or cold storage, so Farmer John starts with the finest and freshest.
- 1:28:58Then he smokes his ham an old-time Western way over native Western wood to give it the same wonderful Western flavor
- 1:29:04the pioneers of the West enjoyed in their home-smoked ham.
- 1:29:07So now you know why we say Farmer John ham is the East and most in quality and the West and most in flavor.
- 1:29:17Waiting for you at Dodger Stadium, gift certificates and shares,
- 1:29:21merchandise certificates for foursome shoes from Jude Barnett,
- 1:29:24a mandrolex wristwatch with bracelet from C.D. Howes and Son on Wilshire Boulevard,
- 1:29:2930 Andrew Williams records from Columbia Records,
- 1:29:32a gold pin of a ball player at bat from California Jewsmith,
- 1:29:36a cassette tape recorder from Panasonic, an auto cassette from T.I.C. Corporation,
- 1:29:40a dozen notes and cookbooks, luggage by Becknells, and many other prizes.
- 1:29:44Fan appreciation night tomorrow. Back to play here at spin.
- 1:29:47All right, Jerry, it's 8 to nothing in favor of the Astros. 8 runs, 11 hits.
- 1:29:53Dodgers no run, 3 hits, and an error. Joe Moeller will pick up.
- 1:29:58In San Diego, 2 out. Runners at first and second.
- 1:30:02The count to Johnny Jeter, one ball and one strike.
- 1:30:07Jeter has hit hard against Johnny Cumberland. He had a single and a double.
- 1:30:14So the young center fielder who came up through the Pirate organization
- 1:30:18is at the plate right now, 1-1, 2 out in the seventh inning.
- 1:30:22And an ex-Dodger at second base, Tommy Dean, and an ex-giant at first base, Don Mason.
- 1:30:29Two balls, one strike to Johnny Jeter, and Bob Watson will start things off.
- 1:30:49Bob Watson waiting, and Moeller looks in to get a sign from Duke Simms.
- 1:30:54Joe into the windup now, and the first pitch to Bob Watson. Fastball, a high hopper over Allen's head,
- 1:31:00and bouncing into left field. That'll be a dozen hits for the Astros in five innings.
- 1:31:06Thames Edge is having a day in the country today.
- 1:31:10So a base hit for Watson. He's had two singles and a home run.
- 1:31:16The count to Johnny Jeter in San Diego, two balls and two strikes.
- 1:31:22The Dodgers were touched up for 17 hits by Houston and Atlanta.
- 1:31:27And Houston looks like they're trying to do it again.
- 1:31:33And Johnny Jeter just hit a fly ball that was caught,
- 1:31:36so the seventh inning rally goes down the drain in San Diego.
- 1:31:40That means the Giants will come up in the eighth inning,
- 1:31:44and that ballgame is tied 1-1, the Giants and the Padres.
- 1:31:49The Dodgers are out of sight tonight. It's 8-0 Houston in the sixth inning.
- 1:31:56Watson standing at first, held on by Buckner.
- 1:31:59Jimmy Wynn has singled it into a fourth play and hit back to the box.
- 1:32:03Moeller a check of first, overhand curve, another big bouncer, this one fouled outside at third, and the count 0-2.
- 1:32:15Doyle Alexander in three and a third innings allowed four runs and five hits.
- 1:32:24A two-run home run to Bob Watson and then some strange goings on in the fifth inning for two more.
- 1:32:31Here's a strike two pitch to Jimmy Wynn.
- 1:32:33Half swing fly ball into shallow center. Valentine waving, he's got it and makes the catch.
- 1:32:39Bobby knew he had that all the way. He was just worried about a tie with Willie Davis.
- 1:32:43They wave him away. One out and Jesus Alou coming out.
- 1:32:55Jesus Alou, double, grounded out twice.
- 1:33:11Jesus Alou, one for three, doubled inside the bag against Downing in the first inning.
- 1:33:16He takes low and inside, ball one, one and oh.
- 1:33:29One and oh to Jesus Alou.
- 1:33:31Moeller ready to go to a stretch, but time had been called by first base umpire Landis
- 1:33:36at the request of base runner Watson who wanted to check with Hub Kettle.
- 1:33:42The Astros with Alou especially might play hit and run even though they're leading eight to nothing.
- 1:33:47It's all part of it. They've already tried to squeeze in a run when they were leading six to nothing.
- 1:33:52They're now out in front eight oh.
- 1:33:55Here's the one oh pitch to Alou. He takes a good breaking ball for a strike and the count one and one.
- 1:34:05One and one to count to Jesus Alou.
- 1:34:16Moeller ready, another look at Watson. The pitch to Alou is low, ball two, two and one.
- 1:34:24The Astros scored four in the first inning to chase Al Downing.
- 1:34:29Then two in the fourth and two in the fifth.
- 1:34:33Clay Kirby has just struck out Alan Gallagher to start off the eighth inning as Alou fouls it away two and two.
- 1:34:41Boy how really marvelous a performance Kirby is putting in tonight.
- 1:34:45When he struck out Gallagher that is the eighth strikeout for him.
- 1:34:49The young right-hander who pitched so long, so hard and so well Friday night.
- 1:34:58So it's one one and Chris Spire is the batter with one out in the eighth inning.
- 1:35:03Now the two two pitch to Alou on the hands it's sharply under Alan's glove and through in the left field.
- 1:35:09And not stopping at second is Watson, a big turn at first by Alou and he dives back to the bag.
- 1:35:1613 base hits for the Astros. They are just eating up the Dodgers tonight.
- 1:35:20And the batter is Dennis Menke.
- 1:35:32Eight runs, 13 hits for Houston. No runs, three hits for the Dodgers.
- 1:35:37The batter is Dennis Menke. He's walked twice and singled.
- 1:35:43So this game is over just about for sure unless the Dodgers really pull a miracle.
- 1:35:47But boy the one in San Diego is really alive.
- 1:35:50One one in the eighth inning. The pitch is low ball one, one and all.
- 1:36:05And with two down Jerry Thompson. We'll leave it at that. Jerry is stuck out in his only at bat.
- 1:36:18We come back and there's one pitching in Friday night. He's thrown a lot of pitches tonight.
- 1:36:37No runs, no left, no left. We go to the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:36:43And that's what happens.
- 1:36:49Baltimore took a pair from Boston 10-2 and 5-4.
- 1:36:55Mueller sat at the bell, looks back at second base at Alou and delivers to Howard a strike. Going on.
- 1:37:08Boy Bob Watson, the local boy having a big night, he has scored three times.
- 1:37:13He has driven in three and he has three hits and four at bats.
- 1:37:19So Watson has really been leading the parade.
- 1:37:22Now the strike one pitch to Larry Howard. Mueller delivers, breaking ball over, strike two. 0-2.
- 1:37:35Nine nothing Astros here in the sixth inning.
- 1:37:38They're going to the bottom of the eighth in San Diego all tied up one and one.
- 1:37:48Clark Bantler, Houston leads nine to nothing over the Dodgers with the sixth inning still going on.
- 1:38:09One-one.
- 1:38:19If the drive, Clark B. By the moderate tonight, it's been to the final day with the Dodgers building the sand for God. Now it is, then it's third base.
- 1:38:43And they're very dominant.
- 1:38:49And the blow off of all big jobs today is not going to fall apart.
- 1:38:55He has given us a line drive just for him.
- 1:39:00That mark was big dog.
- 1:39:02But now he walks like any other guy in the world.
- 1:39:05He's a leader to play on the end of the world.
- 1:39:21He released on cover.
- 1:39:23Will the action again, Mcmahon and Hamilton get up for the drive?
- 1:39:26He wants it to go over.
- 1:39:35And one of the.
- 1:40:02The six yard mark for tonight 4 3 StatesWAN
- 1:40:21turned, Doug, one of.
- 1:40:30like this. High for a ball. Water on and deep. Fires a one back out to Johnson and yelled
- 1:40:37at him about getting that pitch up. That was a swatting. One out, Major Zemdue. There is
- 1:40:45one one-fifth. Drive to right center, KFC. May's racing over there is there. Makes the
- 1:40:50gap. Round hits that one hard in the right center. He's the captain. He's all gaffed
- 1:41:01into a line-up. Double. He's having a good little play. New down. That makes it empty.
- 1:41:18That's one out of them. There is Micks. Micks went by gaffed into the play. Olicutus is
- 1:41:36out of three. Here is San Diego. That's one out. That's one out. That's one out. That's
- 1:42:04one out. That's one out, right side. That's one out, left side. That's one out. That's
- 1:42:28Did he climb up that one there?
- 1:42:29No.
- 1:42:30Two and one.
- 1:42:31Breaking Vance and Johnson held out.
- 1:42:34Johnson.
- 1:42:35Oh, man.
- 1:42:35Had a sparkling career before coming to the ground.
- 1:42:39With four and four with Philadelphia and the 68.
- 1:42:42Thanks and 13 with them.
- 1:42:45Vance and Powell.
- 1:42:47Two and 10.
- 1:42:49He's five and four last year.
- 1:42:52Johnson's that strong with one out on the bottom on six.
- 1:42:57Doing just half a gap.
- 1:43:00Doing full push there.
- 1:43:03Hocking up.
- 1:43:04No, he followed it.
- 1:43:05Mousetrap.
- 1:43:07And his favorite one.
- 1:43:10Johnson.
- 1:43:11During the round of breaking, he got hard.
- 1:43:13Harder.
- 1:43:14And there's Johnson with two.
- 1:43:17Two down.
- 1:43:20Johnson's dead.
- 1:43:22Two down.
- 1:43:23Two on.
- 1:43:24Get away.
- 1:43:25Hamilton and McMain.
- 1:43:28Two out on the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:43:30Four sides of one and one.
- 1:43:32Vance and Moulin.
- 1:43:34A little bit of a top of the order.
- 1:43:36Two first.
- 1:43:38Hocking up.
- 1:43:41No runs.
- 1:43:42No hits.
- 1:43:43No L.A.s.
- 1:43:44No one left on.
- 1:43:45We have gone eight full lengths.
- 1:43:47Four and five and one and one.
- 1:43:54In another nationally game, Chicago and Montreal in Chicago leading that game by the score of five to four after eight and seven.
- 1:44:04I'm not sure how the final score is in on that game though.
- 1:44:06It should be, but we haven't checked.
- 1:44:08It will take a while for you to play this.
- 1:44:09Oh, William for two minutes in that game.
- 1:44:11For Chicago it's 27 and 28 to three.
- 1:44:14For Washington, it's a Chicago, Vance, Lassie, and Giro for Montreal.
- 1:44:20The American League, Minnesota, B.C., went nothing.
- 1:44:23It was open eight and to 67.
- 1:44:25It was a little 50-gross up there on the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:44:27It was coming behind the winner.
- 1:44:29In fact, they tore seven of the eights.
- 1:44:31Johnson and McMain had three runs in the seventh.
- 1:44:34Two runs in the eighth and two more than none.
- 1:44:37New York down.
- 1:44:38Washington takes three.
- 1:44:39Saddlemire won at 16.
- 1:44:41The
- 1:44:42Lakers are back to lose for Washington.
- 1:44:44Lakers are season at three in the heavens.
- 1:44:46And Cleveland defeated Detroit by the score of two to one.
- 1:44:48Colbert the winner.
- 1:44:49Lowland's the loser.
- 1:44:50Lowland's the finish at 25.
- 1:44:52That's right.
- 1:44:54Against Dwight Curtis, the top of a giant order.
- 1:45:00And here's the news for you.
- 1:45:02In the last moment, Gaylord Terry starts to warm up.
- 1:45:07Gaylord who went nine and in glass back, starting the top lead with
- 1:45:11Nooran Robbins, leading him seven to one on seven-head.
- 1:45:15And Terry is in the bullpen now, starting to loosen up.
- 1:45:19If he could get ready tonight, he'd get one man in this ballgame.
- 1:45:25It's going to take Terry quite a while to warm up.
- 1:45:29I would imagine he is down there now.
- 1:45:31And he's got a lot of time.
- 1:45:37Terry delivers to the left hand, downing Henderson.
- 1:45:41He'll drag about half a century.
- 1:45:43Almost looped it over his hands.
- 1:45:45Terry has it down.
- 1:45:46Henderson's like a hundred way off.
- 1:45:49But it's locked it up to the putt now.
- 1:45:51That's out number one and he don't want it.
- 1:45:54Henderson's trying to drag about zero.
- 1:45:57And he's bouncing it.
- 1:46:01He might have bumped it over to his head.
- 1:46:03The pitcher is back to get back to things.
- 1:46:05He's got one down.
- 1:46:06He don't want to sacrifice.
- 1:46:08He doesn't want to sacrifice.
- 1:46:15He don't want to.
- 1:46:16He has a little bit of a chance.
- 1:46:18He's going to be on a close call.
- 1:46:23He's going to come up to Houston, ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:46:27It's his own play.
- 1:46:32It's the end of six.
- 1:46:34It's the end of seven.
- 1:46:36Houston ladies and gentlemen.
- 1:46:41That's the reaction from the crowd at the time.
- 1:46:45They have to get around.
- 1:46:46They're going to make something out of it.
- 1:46:48How will he see my photos?
- 1:46:49One on one.
- 1:46:51Two strikes.
- 1:46:53What is that?
- 1:46:54That was one out.
- 1:46:57He's got seven in his hands.
- 1:46:59That's a million in his hands.
- 1:47:03That was one out tonight.
- 1:47:05They're going to make this one go up.
- 1:47:07That's one to one.
- 1:47:09That's right in his hands.
- 1:47:11One one, that's two point eight.
- 1:47:13One on a miss.
- 1:47:14That's one to one.
- 1:47:20Two strikes now.
- 1:47:22That's just that back drop with two strikes on twenty-two.
- 1:47:26Well, he may as well have made it.
- 1:47:28He may as well have struck out of the bubble.
- 1:47:30He popped up and he struck out again.
- 1:47:33There he is.
- 1:47:34One two-pitch to two.
- 1:47:35Top foul out of Boyle and he saves it.
- 1:47:37That's two.
- 1:47:42No more.
- 1:47:43That's a one-off.
- 1:47:54Seventeen.
- 1:47:59That's one two-pitch to forty.
- 1:48:01Drowed into the right side.
- 1:48:02Waiting for it to the first base and over and beat twenty-two to the back.
- 1:48:08That's the time of the night.
- 1:48:13The Giants lead it up to twenty-nine.
- 1:48:14Twenty-four.
- 1:48:15That's like a place to be doubled in the third and popped up.
- 1:48:23The question now is will the fans of the Senators enjoy it at the top of the ninth inning?
- 1:48:29If they do not score here, we'll go to touchdown.
- 1:48:34That's the time for concern.
- 1:48:40Kirby looking at it nice.
- 1:48:44Right-hander to it.
- 1:48:46We're going to miss him, are we?
- 1:48:51The young right-hander who's just clearly at the beginning of his career and a veteran
- 1:48:56center fielder who's nearing the end of his.
- 1:48:58Take him to the end of the ninth inning.
- 1:49:00He's going to miss the breaking position of the first brother.
- 1:49:04Johnny Ponder.
- 1:49:06Don't worry, Mays will look for it.
- 1:49:11Well, Mays is going to pop right now.
- 1:49:18I want that.
- 1:49:20Hell, I missed.
- 1:49:21I thought he was trying to win it.
- 1:49:23Mays with a bad shoulder.
- 1:49:28He's not as he's long enough as anyone to relax for them.
- 1:49:32He has his right shoulders and you're the impulse.
- 1:49:35That is not an effect of play.
- 1:49:37He's a lot of strength and layers and he's about to lose even to the base.
- 1:49:40Willie takes five.
- 1:49:43Willie trying his mightiest.
- 1:49:47Willie with everything he's got down to hit one out of it.
- 1:49:55Kirby's one-two-thick.
- 1:49:57Bucky Dobson.
- 1:50:02The young man is waiting for that.
- 1:50:04No run, no hit, no area.
- 1:50:06No one left.
- 1:50:07We've got the bottom of it up.
- 1:50:10And Jerry Scott's going to have to get about to get the job for another shot at it.
- 1:50:15Go on and see him take a half.
- 1:50:18The job's not in the pot right now.
- 1:50:22Well, things continue to turn clear.
- 1:50:25And Diego, further to the north, the Los Angeles Dodgers are having a tough time as Houston is losing that ballgame by the score of 10-0.
- 1:50:35You might be curious to see some of the comments made earlier in this ballgame by Lauren Simmons about the then-Skeleton Dodgers.
- 1:50:42That was KFI in Los Angeles.
- 1:50:45It was 50,000 watts per channel station.
- 1:50:47In fact, it's 101 meters from Mississippi.
- 1:50:49That might not mean too much to most people.
- 1:50:52But what it's having means is the reception is incredible.
- 1:50:55You can hear that all over the western part of the United States.
- 1:50:58And so down in front of me, you'll go about 200 miles or so to the south.
- 1:51:04And you've got the little transistor radio turned into KFI.
- 1:51:07That's where you're going to be on those 25-3.
- 1:51:09And what's going on in Dodgers Stadium.
- 1:51:11They are at their home in San Francisco.
- 1:51:13The San Francisco Giants station is still fixed up pretty well.
- 1:51:17It's about 5,000 watts per channel.
- 1:51:19And then the rest of it can be heard in Los Angeles.
- 1:51:21And that's the one.
- 1:51:22Both networks know what the other team is doing.
- 1:51:26They got to the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:51:28At the end of sixth and a half of Dodgers Stadium, usually the 11th and a half of the game,
- 1:51:33you can almost say that one is pretty much the end of the game.
- 1:51:36But it will not be the time for much of it.
- 1:51:38It will be the time for the good and the bad.
- 1:51:41Dodgers lose this one.
- 1:51:44Giants lose the commander of the ninth.
- 1:51:46Now, Jerry Johnson after hitting the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:51:49The second to lead off with a single flat out of popped up.
- 1:51:52Jerry takes the touchdown.
- 1:51:54He's got almost hit it by one.
- 1:51:57Oh, Terry is throwing now as well.
- 1:52:00Yes, Terry is still throwing.
- 1:52:01He's got him with two hands.
- 1:52:06Terry is not throwing hard.
- 1:52:07He was just trying to get loose.
- 1:52:09Jeff Dadd follows to take the lead.
- 1:52:11One and one.
- 1:52:12Jeff Dadd, Martin, and the servings are in batter.
- 1:52:14Steve Marlins throws the bullpen for the potter.
- 1:52:21He's almost asking too much of the servings to go in there.
- 1:52:24But tonight after 15-15 in the last time, Jeff Dadd with the high drive to left field.
- 1:52:28But anything will have room.
- 1:52:30That one at the warning sign.
- 1:52:31It makes the catch for him.
- 1:52:33And the way to just then, it's this one for your heart.
- 1:52:36And anything scares you now.
- 1:52:39Because it is.
- 1:52:40And it's a touchdown.
- 1:52:44One down.
- 1:52:45Bob Parsons who has driven in the fundraiser.
- 1:52:50And then the founding man, that's the global starter, John Keppler, has lost.
- 1:52:56And his single press partner couldn't handle his line drive.
- 1:53:00And that's Beijing Jerry Tom.
- 1:53:04He's got a point to make this mistake on Sunday.
- 1:53:10I'm going to follow back.
- 1:53:12Strike one.
- 1:53:14You know what I'm saying.
- 1:53:15I'll make you go now too if he doesn't get out.
- 1:53:18We're in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 1:53:20Tired of one and one.
- 1:53:23That act of the batters in the seventh inning is a fairly 11-0.
- 1:53:27Where he's got some hits to bust.
- 1:53:29He takes them slow.
- 1:53:31That's the money he's in this.
- 1:53:34He's got a point to make.
- 1:53:36He's got a point to make.
- 1:53:38And he's got 11 men on him.
- 1:53:42The Padres just ran an eight.
- 1:53:44And Johnson's room is in there.
- 1:53:46He's got a point to make with a high fastball on a two-two.
- 1:53:50Tom Keppler strikes the bounce of our buzz.
- 1:53:53One down.
- 1:53:55And the base is up.
- 1:53:57Another play there.
- 1:53:59But there, batting the full base line, it's backed up deep.
- 1:54:03Drops and grinds.
- 1:54:05No distance to the bench anyhow.
- 1:54:07That's the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:54:09That one's too big.
- 1:54:11Down the way from deep to two and two.
- 1:54:14Little else and she strikes the bounce.
- 1:54:16Perhaps if they get that far, we'll have McCully, Kingman, and Deane from the tenth.
- 1:54:30Johnson wants to go quite a few too fast.
- 1:54:35Now, passing back to where Bob might be up here getting fastball in the front,
- 1:54:41knowing that Johnson does not want to walk him.
- 1:54:45Very two-two foot fastball hits him right to him.
- 1:54:48Kingman goes back, waiting for this to look to his fair, makes the catch, and two-meter down.
- 1:54:53And I will have to say, even though Dave Kingman is a very poppy and boy's young bulls player,
- 1:55:00and he has to have some thoughts when that fly ball was coming out to him, you just can't be normal.
- 1:55:06And then a ball game that means just one.
- 1:55:09Your life doesn't go a little faster when you have to catch it one at all.
- 1:55:13Turn it up, right there they got the hands of McBride and Mitchy DeMegas.
- 1:55:19This young man is Mitch, another beautiful ball game, and he is making a habit of it.
- 1:55:25And Mitch DeMegas, he's going on a miss right now.
- 1:55:28Quiet out, rounded out in the front.
- 1:55:32Johnson with one out to go to get the bounce.
- 1:55:41Johnson's next pitch.
- 1:55:43Rounded out in the miss, trying to get on anyway he can.
- 1:55:46Frank Jumkin, who's up on the move then, for it.
- 1:55:51There he is, not throwing anymore.
- 1:55:57Maybe he'll find out that it's just a little, or maybe he's ready.
- 1:56:01And yet ready, isn't he?
- 1:56:03Don't you think? One out in the miss.
- 1:56:05Jumkin's down on the plate.
- 1:56:06He'll go to the ten-penny.
- 1:56:08And Jumkin's in the burlong of the 1971 season.
- 1:56:11As we go to the tenth and the score, the Giants 1 and the Padres.
- 1:56:19Michael Cetti in the major league since 1932 is a player our coach will not return as the third-base coach of the Minnesota Twins in 1972.
- 1:56:28The Southern Giants are the twins, they're the clubs, the first place in the United States West, a goal for four out of the five places next season.
- 1:56:38Cetti, according to Memphis, left for home at easy-eye.
- 1:56:41Cetti immediately fell upon your home, could not be reached.
- 1:56:44Cetti being a lot of his same as a player, but also as a third-base coach, Winston and Rockanky.
- 1:56:52On Wednesday's play in the American League, Baltimore leads the short by 11 games, Boston a 7-10 out, New York by 21-1.5, Washington by 37 and Cleveland by 43 games.
- 1:57:06The home team games schedule Thursday, so multiple clubs will be right where they are.
- 1:57:11In the West Oakland is leading Kansas City by 15, Chicago 22-1.5, Minnesota by 25-1.5, California Brown by 26, Milwaukee by 30.
- 1:57:21And a half.
- 1:57:22California is battling Minnesota for fifth place in, actually for fourth place.
- 1:57:29California fifth at the moment, Minnesota fourth by 25.5, and Minnesota by a half a game each.
- 1:57:36Okay, let's get back to the 10-10 now at the end of the game.
- 1:57:42Brown for the rest of it, getting up our shot for the Giants, 4-5 and 6-6 in the order, first place for the Willie McAtee, right fielder Drew Stingley, and Patrick McPhee.
- 1:57:53A Cetti going up for a half and a third, right down the third, then to the Miss Gephin, and then a half and a seventh.
- 1:58:00By the way, for three-and-a-half-piloters on the left side, they've just that, about 25 feet off the line of third and hitting the baseline, guarding against the front.
- 1:58:12Kirby's first pitch for McAtee.
- 1:58:15He's high and deep to center field, but he will make the gap.
- 1:58:18He's back there, he's got nine runs, a full center, McAtee hit it on the nose.
- 1:58:25Dave Kingman, and into the ball again, went fast out the lane with a long side
- 1:58:30ground with a left-strike shot.
- 1:58:31and a seventh with two outs from Stingley and the Giants runner.
- 1:58:34Tie it up, the Giants runner, Kingman and the right-hander again.
- 1:58:38The government doesn't have to win that hard, you know, all around, but over-swinging the next pitch without a count.
- 1:58:45He's got a hit one too hard of San Diego State.
- 1:58:49370 feet and 18 feet, I'll be quiet, Dave.
- 1:59:01High inside it, through the one-one count.
- 1:59:08The one-one must have fallen.
- 1:59:20One-one must have broken.
- 1:59:22A ball and two strikes.
- 1:59:24The Dodgers had 302 outs from the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:59:28That was, that was.
- 1:59:30Houston is funny, level the net back.
- 1:59:35One-two, but high and deep to left field, but not deep enough, I don't think.
- 1:59:41That goes, that goes fast, and he watches, and he makes the catch at the wall.
- 1:59:48That high five off, but high enough.
- 1:59:52Drops down around the rim, and Justin made the count.
- 1:59:57That's a game of chess by just literally inches.
- 2:00:10Those good feet.
- 2:00:12That's a hand-pump by Irving Hanna, Washington 7, second and third, 4-totnol, 4-totnol, 7.
- 2:00:27Making this his world tie line.
- 2:00:35Two outs, bases on the top of the tenth, 9-1 to Padres, one.
- 2:00:42There we hit, high ball field.
- 2:00:45Let me drop behind him, he needs two balls on those strikes.
- 2:00:50Oh, a very one-and-two-one, a 10-and-one.
- 2:00:58Three-and-out, breaking the hot-side ball three.
- 2:01:06Dodgers at the bases loaded from the seventh on three-in, the Muckner line at the other side.
- 2:01:1311-11, Houston, three-offence to base, all strikes, a three-and-out-fist, Irving with the broken ball.
- 2:01:32Three-and-one count on good feet, every other play.
- 2:01:36And a miss strike to each case in a high-breaking pitch, not getting it, a full-cash, three-ball two-toss.
- 2:01:52Irving's back to the plate, three-two, all strike four, a 10-and-3-totnol.
- 2:01:59The game is at number 11, the Giants and the Caps go around and go hit, and the Tigers are in the middle of the club.
- 2:02:06They go to the bottom of the tenth, the Giants win it, the Panthers win it.
- 2:02:10Hemmingson's been kind of tough this year for the last three innings, and now he's tired.
- 2:02:14Ten Giants in a row, the last man in human base, Dave King, in the seventh inning, and it was King and St. Russell,
- 2:02:20and it goes in, Henderson, on second base, who's going to be coming in, and that's why we're next to any.
- 2:02:27And they go forward, it's on his side in the seventh inning.
- 2:02:31That's France Gas, the leadoff of the single defender field, and then moves to third base,
- 2:02:36and a run and hit single by Kershwack, and he's two of the infields, three of them, that's Gas and Brown,
- 2:02:42Olly Brown, excuse me, scoring, Johnson is the left fielder, and Meech is the second.
- 2:02:48So they run and hit single by France Gas, and then four, on an infield out by Boston, the catcher.
- 2:02:54And that's the end of the scoring that's going in this ballgame.
- 2:02:57Meanwhile, the up and left fielder, this team that's in San Diego and Los Angeles,
- 2:03:01they're raffling away a night when they hit 11-0 in favor of Houston,
- 2:03:05and they're dodging King-Carrolls as long as San Francisco loses this ballgame.
- 2:03:11If they hit one time right down, they'll send you to the back of the bottom of the half.
- 2:03:16Jerry Johnson comes off the pitch at the bottom of the tenth, against the top of the tenth in that order.
- 2:03:23George Stoptowels will run second base from Don Mesa and send us through this land here.
- 2:03:35The Giants are long past the chances early.
- 2:03:42That two men out in the first inning was two outs, double scores.
- 2:03:46They're having a matter of second with run outs.
- 2:03:53The runners in first and third with run out in the second didn't score.
- 2:03:55The runners in second and third with nobody out.
- 2:03:58The bases had a one out in the third and did not score.
- 2:04:02Finally got a run in in seventh, and a single by Hunter's, and a sacrifice.
- 2:04:06Dave Kingman, see how it's going over.
- 2:04:09The second inning, single by Brown, and was one out, Parsons didn't feel out getting a run in.
- 2:04:16A man inside the third on the hit, and a run single by Gestach.
- 2:04:20There's Donny Gray and George Stoptowels, Oaks are killing them quick.
- 2:04:24Right hander battered.
- 2:04:25Jerry Johnson in the play.
- 2:04:27Last ball, five-one-one.
- 2:04:32Johnson came on with two outs in the fifth.
- 2:04:36This is four on one third innings, wild pitch.
- 2:04:40Fastball low ball two.
- 2:04:43Fuller and Jerry throwing a dad bullpen again.
- 2:04:57Johnson gets the go through.
- 2:05:02Half-ball strike.
- 2:05:06Johnson in on the count with Deamis doing one.
- 2:05:09Don Mason on deck.
- 2:05:11George is with Donny to read it to follow.
- 2:05:14Two-one-six on the way.
- 2:05:16Now ball, they get to right field.
- 2:05:21And a by-draw is in business in the monitor test.
- 2:05:25Donny Deam, plays as a second on the right field, a sharp ground ball from the horrible first and seventh.
- 2:05:32Don Mason will be up in a sacrificial situation.
- 2:05:50Donny here moves in at four.
- 2:05:55Johnson is a second to go.
- 2:05:57Mason running around the bite.
- 2:05:59Johnson to the right, first one.
- 2:06:22The ball goes to the left throw, I'm going back in.
- 2:06:30No one can place it in the first base.
- 2:06:33Rene will get a second and he got it.
- 2:06:35Go to first, not in third.
- 2:06:37Great play by Lanier.
- 2:06:39Mason running the ball at third base.
- 2:06:41Now well and one.
- 2:06:42Wilson grabbing ground and is tied for the first.
- 2:06:47Well and one, Rene to fire, foul, disc, Mason takes over at first.
- 2:06:52The bottom will be presented to the God of Heaters.
- 2:06:55They put an error, single, double, nine, 11.
- 2:07:11Mason leaves them first.
- 2:07:26The ball goes to the left, the left is fired, goes to Pawella, he drops the ball at second base.
- 2:07:50The ball goes to the left, the left is fired, he fielded it to the bloody side to catch his bare hand and it dropped it.
- 2:08:12Now the time is really expensive, they have a big guy up there, Holt Colby.
- 2:08:17They're going for four.
- 2:08:22Mason at second, Giddyup first, one out.
- 2:08:25Down to the point.
- 2:08:27Raging hit, blow outside, ball one.
- 2:08:43One second, the runner is laid from first and second.
- 2:08:47Giddyup set, now it's foul, pass third.
- 2:08:52One-one, Giddyup on Colby.
- 2:09:09The ball is handed by the outfield, Jepha gets over.
- 2:09:14One-one, Jepha by Johnson.
- 2:09:16In the dirt, bounce away from Jepha, but the runners cannot move up.
- 2:09:19Jepha quickly reprees, the ball is right behind him.
- 2:09:23Johnson drops behind on Colby, two balls and one strike.
- 2:09:39Jepha runs out on Colby, Mason at second, Giddyup at first, one out.
- 2:09:43Johnson, looking back a second, if it's a turnover, it's one on a missed strike too.
- 2:09:53He's got the ball, but it's basically his take.
- 2:09:57He's the one that's about to change Colby to put on fire.
- 2:10:06It's a perfect hand, a count of two and two.
- 2:10:15Johnson's hit, foul at the plate.
- 2:10:28Johnson, it's a double play on here, but when he drops the ball, it's up and base.
- 2:10:43Johnson ready to keep you a bit beneath Colby.
- 2:10:46It's deep to left field, that's a home run, it's no game over.
- 2:11:04The guy has dropped early and is definitely off to field.
- 2:11:08The father has went up four to one.
- 2:11:12What happens to Los Angeles, it goes down to the final night.
- 2:11:16The guy has missed the double play.
- 2:11:20They've got it, the play right here is deep into the half field.
- 2:11:23There was no doubt about it, it was gone the minute it left the bat.
- 2:11:33The final total, in the first inning, three runs for the Padres, two hits, one strike,
- 2:11:43no runners left.
- 2:11:49Final score, San Diego's four runs, nine runs, no error.
- 2:11:54The one that has got our score, winning pitcher is Craig Hogan, and losing pitcher is Jerry Johnson.
- 2:12:02This is still time for the last minute, but I predict it will get smaller.
- 2:12:06You might need to stay tuned.
- 2:12:10Okay, that's it from San Francisco and San Diego, it's a five minute game.
- 2:12:15In the ninth inning, time to draw dreamer one more and after a nine-on-eight play,
- 2:12:20but in the tenth inning, made Colbert on a three-run home run, and that is it.
- 2:12:26And still time for the quarter-finals, regardless of what happens in Los Angeles,
- 2:12:32the Penegra East and the National League West will go to the final day of the season.
- 2:12:38Now, you might think, well, what's the sense of pushing the Los Angeles with their Dodgers turning at 11 to nuffol?
- 2:12:44Well, for your information, my thoughts are just about the same.
- 2:12:48However, I wouldn't even have to come to work tomorrow if the Dodgers happen at 411 runs or so,
- 2:12:53and try that ballgame up.
- 2:12:55I really can't do the very same, but in just a few moments, we'll be switching the Dodgers team
- 2:12:59to Mark D'Agato, our final commentary Dodger, for the description of the remainder.
- 2:13:04The third team is in the eighth inning now, the Dodgers and the Houston Astros.
- 2:13:11Well, the Houston scored four times in the first inning, twice in the fourth, twice in the fifth,
- 2:13:15twice in the sixth, and once in the seventh, and ended by the score of 11 to nothing,
- 2:13:20a system of batting in the top half of the eighth inning, twice, at the Dodgers stadium in Los Angeles.
- 2:13:26So, as I said, in just a few moments, we'll be switching to Los Angeles.
- 2:13:30In the National League game, Montreal defeated Chicago by the score of 65,
- 2:13:34six runs 12, and two errors in Chicago, five runs 10, and two errors.
- 2:13:41Before switching to Los Angeles, that far is 15 seconds for a coaching identification.
- 2:13:50This is the American Forces radio and television service.
- 2:14:00As far as the body is concerned, it's close up the up and go home, and get out of here early tomorrow.
- 2:14:07And a home here along the line of arms.
- 2:14:12What a finish. What a marvelous finish.
- 2:14:15And we're so happy to finish on such a high note.
- 2:14:18Whereby, we can tell a line of home here.
- 2:14:21There's a basket back to second, left to the margin, can't get it, a day to put thought.
- 2:14:25It doesn't mean anything, but this time, we're so delighted that the Dodgers have some shade.
- 2:14:31And one more day, if anything happens here, we'll get a war.
- 2:14:37And I'll tell you something, there's a fellow named Clay Kirby down there in San Diego
- 2:14:41who did something that most professional men felt would be impossible.
- 2:14:46Friday night, he said, 15 and 8, he made, as I understand it, 234 points on Friday night.
- 2:14:54The pitch to Manimoda fouled away.
- 2:14:59And at Phillips, an ex-Dodger, Jack Billingham, will be pitching for Houston.
- 2:15:04And as an added Phillips, an ex-Dodger, Jack Billingham, will be pitching for Houston.
- 2:15:11Juan Marajal.
- 2:15:14Left-hander Dave Roberts, who the Jellis has had a sore back, will go against Juan Marajal.
- 2:15:21Today, to make sure the batteries on the radio are working, the tubes on the TV stand,
- 2:15:26the batteries on the radio are working, the tubes on the TV set are working,
- 2:15:30and together we'll all find out.
- 2:15:36The Giants lost. The Dodgers are being clobbered.
- 2:15:40The Giants have clinched a mathematical tie.
- 2:15:44Crawford goes as a bouncer, the third backhanded by Martinez, who throws accurately to Menke,
- 2:15:50and the Dodgers are done in the eighth inning.
- 2:15:52They get a hit, but that's all. And at the end of eighth, Astros 11, Dodgers nothing.
- 2:15:57Spirit, the ability to make one more effort, to try a little harder than the other guy.
- 2:16:03Spirit, that's what the folks at Union 76 have, and they put it to work making gasoline.
- 2:16:09Take Super 76, for example, Union's premium blend.
- 2:16:13They've put five different engine cleaners into Super 76 when two or three might have done the job.
- 2:16:19The people at Union 76 don't like to just get by, and that's what the spirit of 76 is all about.
- 2:16:25Those five engine cleaners are there, because Union feels that's what it takes to do an effective job
- 2:16:31of keeping critical engine areas clean.
- 2:16:33Intake valves, exhaust valves, spark plugs, carburetors, anti-pollution valves.
- 2:16:39Keeping an engine clean means it's going to run better, longer, and the cleaner the engine, the less pollution it creates.
- 2:16:45So start doing yourself and your car a favor now. Get the spirit.
- 2:16:50The spirit of 76 lives at Union Oil.
- 2:16:54As we go to the ninth inning, with the Astros leading 11 to nothing,
- 2:17:09and Mike Straula will be pitching to Larry Howard to start it off.
- 2:17:13For the Giants, of course, a bitter defeat.
- 2:17:161-1, missing a ninth inning home run by Dave Kingman, or that was a tenth inning he missed.
- 2:17:24And then Colbert hitting a three-run home run to beat Jerry Johnson.
- 2:17:27So the Giants lose a bitter game.
- 2:17:29As far as the Dodgers are concerned, they could have stayed home tonight and caught some of the shows.
- 2:17:34They have not been...
- 2:17:36And actually, it comes as a good time for them. Howard takes ball one.
- 2:17:40The Giants, even though they have clinched the tie, have lost a tough one.
- 2:17:45And the Dodgers must feel, psychologically, that, well, they've gotten a bad game out of their system
- 2:17:50and really haven't gotten hurt.
- 2:17:52The pitch foul back 1-1.
- 2:17:54And the Giants are going to be the first to make a comeback.
- 2:17:57They're going to be the first to make a comeback.
- 2:17:59They're going to be the first to make a comeback.
- 2:18:01They've gotten a bad game out of their system and really haven't gotten hurt. The pitch foul back 1-1.
- 2:18:07Well, don't forget, and we might as well follow all of the zany proceedings tonight with this note,
- 2:18:12that tickets are on sale right now over the counter for the National League Championship Series,
- 2:18:17if and when, between the Pirates and the Dodgers.
- 2:18:20It would start Saturday if the Dodgers finish on top in the National League West.
- 2:18:24The games here are both day games, Saturday and Sunday, beginning at one.
- 2:18:28Here's the 1-1 pitch. In Howard, it's a fly ball to right field.
- 2:18:32Crawford hesitates, now comes up forward, and Willie makes the catch.
- 2:18:36The prices for those two games against the Pirates, if they are played, $7 per box, $5 for reserved,
- 2:18:45$3 for Pavilion and Blue level.
- 2:18:47Now, tickets may be purchased for one game or both games.
- 2:18:50And they're on sale right now over the counter at Ticketron offices,
- 2:18:54at Mutual offices, and at the Dodger Ticket office on Stadium Way, open daily at 9.30.
- 2:18:59So, you can get tickets for the playoff, and then tomorrow night,
- 2:19:03you can watch the game and see if you're going to use the tickets.
- 2:19:06Of course, swings and misses. That's right, the Dodgers are going to televised tomorrow night's game on Channel 11.
- 2:19:15Stroller ready in the strike one pitch.
- 2:19:18Half swing foul, queued right over into the dugout, 0-2.
- 2:19:22So, on fan appreciation night, the Dodgers televised a home game to the home folks.
- 2:19:31That'll be Channel 11, KTTV, and of course, KFI and the Dodger radio network, every time, everywhere.
- 2:19:400-2 to force, good hitting pitcher. He has two hits tonight. He takes five, ball one.
- 2:19:45So, Don Sutton and Jack Billingham and Dave Roberts and Juan Marischal, all four men, will have pressure.
- 2:19:55Oh, there's no real pressure on Billingham and Roberts, except professional pride, knowing that they can change the race.
- 2:20:03The pressure is really on Don Sutton. The one-two pitch is popped in the air in the shallow left.
- 2:20:09Mota is there and waiting and makes the catch.
- 2:20:13You know, if you had to pick one of the four men now, you got Roberts and Billingham, Marischal and Sutton.
- 2:20:18Sutton is the one. He's going to taste it. What he does all day tomorrow, I don't know.
- 2:20:24But Don is going to have to do something until he goes to the mound and starts pitching at 7.45.
- 2:20:32Boy, it's going to be a long day. I'm sure his wife Patty and young son will try and keep him busy.
- 2:20:39But the story of Don Sutton tomorrow, Roger Metzger, struck out, grounded out, hit into a fourth play, grounded out, fly to center.
- 2:20:50He is the only member of the Astros without a hit.
- 2:20:57The pitch is low, ball one.
- 2:21:08The one-oh pitch on the way, line drive to left. That means everybody's in on the act. A base hit for Metzger.
- 2:21:15He was the last Astro to check in.
- 2:21:19So a single against Scrawler. And that'll bring up Joe Morgan.
- 2:21:24Joe Morgan. Second race.
- 2:21:29Don Sutton was born in Alabama, and Don was 26 on the 2nd of April.
- 2:21:38He has had five years of big league experience, and all of that and then some will be on the line tomorrow night.
- 2:21:45Morgan takes low, ball one, one and oh.
- 2:21:48When Sutton pitches, I would guess the Dodger bullpen will be standing room only.
- 2:21:56You could see Al Downing warming up in the Dodger bullpen tomorrow night.
- 2:22:00Because he didn't pitch much tonight.
- 2:22:03Here's the one-oh on the way, swung on and missed one and one.
- 2:22:06Down in San Diego, they tell us that while Jerry Johnson was struggling in relief of John Cumberland, Gaylord Perry was throwing in the pen.
- 2:22:15Tomorrow night for the Dodgers, everything goes. Anything and everything.
- 2:22:23Here's the one-one pitch. Morgan fouls. This is like having to read the last 20 pages of a very bad book, watching this game.
- 2:22:34Eleven to nothing Astros, top of the ninth inning.
- 2:22:43One and two to little Joe.
- 2:22:48Roller, a look at first. Mike delivers and Morgan takes outside. Ball two, two and two.
- 2:22:56Long Jack Billingham, the ex-Dodger, will be on the mound for the Astros, trying to wreck the Dodger plans for 71.
- 2:23:06The Giants figure to have their hands full. If Dave Roberts is healthy, they're going to have some time.
- 2:23:11There's a bounce at a Parker, he'll go to the bag.
- 2:23:14Okay, the top of the ninth is in. At the end of eight and a half, Astros 11 Dodgers nothing.
- 2:23:19Schlitz, Milwaukee in the world.
- 2:23:28Don't go around watching, so you do it with all the gusto you have. Right down to the beer you drink. Less will do.
- 2:23:36Stepping away to throw down to the teams.
- 2:24:01And you're out of slips, you're out of feed.
- 2:24:23Bottom of the ninth inning with the Astros leading the dot, leading is not exactly the
- 2:24:27word.
- 2:24:29They have led them astray, they have led them down the Primrose path.
- 2:24:33The Astros 11 runs, 16 hits and an error, and the Dodgers nothing.
- 2:24:38No runs, 8 hits and an error.
- 2:24:41And we have mercifully reached the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:24:44But it's tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow that is on everybody's mind.
- 2:24:49Not this one.
- 2:24:50Duke Simms, Bobby Valentine and Wes Parker, and bless them, the folks come up with a charge.
- 2:24:58That charge with the Dodgers down 11 to nothing could only be heard in Montreal.
- 2:25:09All right, here's the Duke.
- 2:25:13He is struck out and fouled out and singled one for three.
- 2:25:18Walter Alston has to make up his mind about tomorrow.
- 2:25:22Simms gets a line drive base hit.
- 2:25:24The Dodgers now have 9 hits and nothing to show for it.
- 2:25:29What do you do tomorrow?
- 2:25:30Do you, Walter Alston, do you play Duke Simms who's been hot?
- 2:25:33Do you play Tommy Howler who has more experience?
- 2:25:38And then do you play Manny Moda over Wes Parker?
- 2:25:44And if Moda plays over Parker, you are weaker defensively in the sense that Allen stays
- 2:25:50at third.
- 2:25:53And then you would go on the outfield, hit foul back.
- 2:25:57So the manager will have a short night.
- 2:26:01Tomorrow will come pretty fast for him if he has thinking to do.
- 2:26:060-1 to count to Valentine.
- 2:26:10Force delivers low 1-1.
- 2:26:11I keep thinking about Maury Will who is telling us the price of a pennant race.
- 2:26:16He's lost 10 pounds, averaging maybe four or five hours sleep these days.
- 2:26:22Less than one full meal a day.
- 2:26:24Pitch to Valentine low, ball two.
- 2:26:28You hear a lot about professionalism, but you scrape away professionalism and underneath
- 2:26:33there's still a human being.
- 2:26:34And these fellows are writhing right now in the last painful moment for the pennant race.
- 2:26:40Five-ball to center by Valentine, caught by Sedeno.
- 2:26:43One away, let's pause the station identification.
- 2:26:45This is the Los Angeles Dodgers radio network.
- 2:26:48Wes Parker will be the batter.
- 2:26:51Finishing up at first base.
- 2:26:54Wes hitting 275.
- 2:26:55He hasn't figured in many Dodger gameplay, but he takes it in the hands, ball one, 1-0.
- 2:27:01After such an incredible year last year, suddenly now in the pressure days, we haven't seen
- 2:27:05Wes except late in the game.
- 2:27:07He hadn't been in a start.
- 2:27:08Manny Mota has changed everything by playing every day.
- 2:27:12Pitch is low, ball two.
- 2:27:142-0.
- 2:27:15Several folks have called in, and I'm sure the majority understand, but we don't want
- 2:27:20to slide anybody.
- 2:27:21And a couple of folks went into the trouble of calling in, so we'll explain.
- 2:27:25The pitch to Parker is a bouncer wide at first, fielded by Menke, underhands to force in time.
- 2:27:322-0.
- 2:27:33And the batter will be Maury Wills.
- 2:27:37Maury Wills.
- 2:27:39Folks have called in asking about tomorrow night.
- 2:27:47It is very simple.
- 2:27:49The Dodgers are trailing by one.
- 2:27:52If the Giants lose and the Dodgers lose, the Giants win the pennants.
- 2:28:00If the Dodgers win and the Giants win, the Giants win the pennants.
- 2:28:09Only if the Dodgers win and the Giants lose, then there's a tie.
- 2:28:14There's a bunch.
- 2:28:15Force picks it up.
- 2:28:16Those two first.
- 2:28:17So it's as simple as that.
- 2:28:18Tomorrow night, the Dodgers must win, the Giants must lose, or it's over.
- 2:28:24I've thought about over it.
- 2:28:26This is over.
- 2:28:27It's been over for quite a while.
- 2:28:28The Astros 11 runs, 16 hits, one error.
- 2:28:32The Dodgers no runs, 9 hits, and one error.
- 2:28:35The best thing to be said about this game tonight, the Dodgers will not lose any sleep
- 2:28:40over it, but they'll probably lose sleep over the cloudy future tomorrow evening.
- 2:28:45Once again, final score of the ballgame, the Astros 11 and the Dodgers nothing.
