SPEAKER_00: Deborah, thank you for being here.
• 1:41
SPEAKER_00: And for those who of the that may not know you very well, please tell us a little bit more about your work and let's get into the work that you do.
• 1:50
  SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_03: Thank you, Patty, for that beautiful introduction and for having me on the show.
• 1:56
SPEAKER_03: As you said, I've written a story, my story.
• 1:59
SPEAKER_03: It's one of surviving narcissism and gaslighting.
• 2:05
SPEAKER_03: And I'm also a mother of three beautiful children.
• 2:09
SPEAKER_03: I'm a grandmother of one adorable little grand grandson and a dog mom and just various hobbies from crocheting, needlework, reading, all of that good stuff.
• 2:24
SPEAKER_03: And I my my most thing I'm proud of is the coaching, is turning my pain into purpose through podcasting, through writing my story, and coaching.
• 2:39
  SPEAKER_00: That's beautiful.
• 2:40
SPEAKER_00: And I am so glad we crossed paths.
• 2:43
SPEAKER_00: What was the pivotal moment that changed the direction of your life?
• 2:47
SPEAKER_00: I know you mentioned it briefly, but let's talk a little bit more about that pivotal moment that changed the direction of everything you're doing.
• 2:54
SPEAKER_00: What I call the turnaround moment.
• 2:57
SPEAKER_03: My turnaround moment was when I woke up in the psych ward realizing I had attempted suicide.
• 3:06
SPEAKER_03: And I had I was still married.
• 3:16
SPEAKER_03: And I started going to therapy and became depressed.
• 3:22
SPEAKER_03: And the doctor did prescribe some antidepressants, but I but my depression was spiraling faster than the medicine could take in.
• 3:32
SPEAKER_03: And the pressure that I was feeling was just too much.
• 3:37
SPEAKER_03: And I thought that everybody would be happier without me if I wasn't in this world, including my three kids.
• 4:00
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 4:00
SPEAKER_00: But going back, was there a revelation there?
• 4:03
  SPEAKER_00: What lesson was learned?
• 4:06
  SPEAKER_03: A lot.
• 4:07
SPEAKER_03: It started when my doctor had come in to the to visit me in the psych ward, and he said, and that's all he said is your environment is making you sick.
• 4:20
  SPEAKER_03: And that's pretty powerful.
• 4:22
SPEAKER_03: But I understood what he meant because I had was in therapy enough long enough to know that there was something wrong with this marriage.
• 4:32
SPEAKER_03: And I had already reached out to my mom at that just prior to that and telling her that I'm not happy.
• 4:39
SPEAKER_03: Now, granted, this was the days when it was cheaper to call like after 7 p.m.
• 4:46
SPEAKER_03: Ma Bell had those telephone race at that time.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_03: And I was pretty isolated.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_03: That was part of the problem that I didn't realize that of the isolation.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_03: Uh he I we were 3,000 miles away from my family, was only really allowed to call them maybe once a week after in the evenings when it was cheaper.
• 5:10
SPEAKER_03: But I just I one day I was just so upset.
• 5:16
SPEAKER_03: And I reached out during the day, during the high cost of calls, and called my mom.
• 5:22
  SPEAKER_03: And I told her, I said, I I'm not happy and I don't know why.
• 5:26
SPEAKER_03: And her response was, I have been praying for years for this phone call.
• 5:32
  unknown: Oh wow.
• 5:33
  SPEAKER_03: And I went, What?
• 5:35
  unknown: Wow.
• 5:36
SPEAKER_03: And that's when she started in saying something about that my ex was controlling.
• 5:45
SPEAKER_03: Now that generation, that's what they thought in terms of they looked at it as control, not as verbal abuse, not as anything else.
• 5:55
SPEAKER_03: In fact, it my whole situation was coined verbal abuse, not narcissism, not gaslighting, not any of those things.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_03: These terms have come more into play later, later on, more in the 90s and 2000s and stuff.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_03: This was happening, this was happening in the 90s, but again, some of this terminology didn't come into play.
• 6:17
SPEAKER_03: The word gaslighting is what the most famous looked up word in Webster's or Merriam Webster's dictionary for the last few years.
• 6:26
  SPEAKER_03: So wow that goes.
• 6:30
SPEAKER_03: Actually, when I was writing my book, I started doing it.
• 6:34
  SPEAKER_03: I wrote my story.
• 6:35
SPEAKER_03: It took me 25 years to open up.
• 6:39
SPEAKER_03: And a lot of reasons for that.
• 6:41
SPEAKER_03: I was busy rebuilding my life.
• 6:44
SPEAKER_03: I was busy rebuilding me.
• 6:46
SPEAKER_03: My self-esteem was just in the tank.
• 6:51
SPEAKER_03: I had two of my three kids dealing with also parental alienation.
• 6:56
SPEAKER_03: I was trying to get my kids, the ones that I was raising anyway, to be healthy, getting, we had family therapy, dealing with a lot of dealing with life.
• 7:06
SPEAKER_03: I was able to put myself back through college and earn a degree, but basically building my life.
• 7:14
SPEAKER_03: I was a stay-at-home mom, had no, was thrown into the workplace with very little skills.
• 7:21
SPEAKER_03: So I had to learn all of that.
• 7:23
SPEAKER_03: So life for 25 years was just busy surviving, I guess I would best say.
• 7:31
SPEAKER_03: And then I happened to have lunch with a friend, and he told me about a book he was releasing that he had written, he was releasing.
• 7:40
SPEAKER_03: He starts telling me a little bit about his story, and I'm thinking, I've experienced some of that same stuff.
• 7:50
SPEAKER_03: And I thought to myself, I wonder.
• 7:52
SPEAKER_03: I go home, and you know how things start sitting on your chest, and it just keeps sitting on there, and it's like, hmm, I wonder if this is telling me something.
• 8:00
SPEAKER_03: And nowhere has it ever been on my bucket list to write a book.
• 8:06
SPEAKER_03: Because I had a uh one day you picked up a pen.
• 8:10
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I reached out back to my friend and I said, Who published your book?
• 8:14
SPEAKER_03: And so he gave me the publisher's name.
• 8:16
SPEAKER_03: It's Dom Damaski with Motivation Champs.
• 8:20
SPEAKER_03: Yes, we know him well.
• 8:21
SPEAKER_03: We do, and shout out, shout out to Dom.
• 8:25
SPEAKER_03: And he I talked to him and he said, You know what?
• 8:30
SPEAKER_03: Write a couple chapters, send it to me, and and let me see.
• 8:34
SPEAKER_03: So I did, and he called me within 24 hours and he said, Write your story.
• 8:40
SPEAKER_03: And I said, say what?
• 8:42
  SPEAKER_03: Write your story.
• 8:44
  SPEAKER_03: Okay.
• 8:46
SPEAKER_03: So it here's the ironic thing of it.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_03: It took me about five and a half weeks to write the book.
• 8:53
SPEAKER_03: Now, most people, it takes a lot longer to write their story.
• 8:56
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it just came out of me.
• 8:59
SPEAKER_03: Wow, the dam was up, the damn broke, and boom, it all came out.
• 9:06
SPEAKER_03: And writing it was like the last piece.
• 9:10
SPEAKER_03: It was very healing, very cathartic.
• 9:14
SPEAKER_03: I was able to sit back when I typed the words the end at the at the end of the story, and I sat back and wow, look how far I've come.
• 9:24
SPEAKER_03: And a lot of what had happened was no longer triggering me, which is a good thing.
• 9:30
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 9:31
SPEAKER_03: But I just realized how much life was in those 25 years, what I've overcome, and how much better I am for having made those very difficult choices.
• 9:44
SPEAKER_00: And the narrative change, right?
• 9:48
SPEAKER_00: Like now, and the strength that you didn't know you had all along.
• 9:53
SPEAKER_00: So, what would you say to your younger self today?
• 9:59
  SPEAKER_00: Listen to your gut.
• 10:02
  SPEAKER_02: Wow.
• 10:03
SPEAKER_03: And I'm going to elaborate a little bit on that.
• 10:08
SPEAKER_03: The day I got married, I'm in the church on my dad's arm, and my stomach did a 180 flip.
• 10:19
SPEAKER_03: And because here's just entered the church, you have all these pairs of eyes looking at you, right?
• 10:26
SPEAKER_03: And my stomach did this huge flip.
• 10:28
SPEAKER_03: And it was so much so that I grabbed on grabbed harder onto my dad's arm.
• 10:33
SPEAKER_03: And he looked at me and he said, You don't have to go through with this.
• 10:39
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 10:41
  SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, What?
• 10:42
SPEAKER_03: And I'm seeing all of these people looking at me.
• 10:45
SPEAKER_03: And I went, No, I think it's just wedding day jitters.
• 10:50
  SPEAKER_00: Wow.
• 10:51
  SPEAKER_00: Wow.
• 10:52
SPEAKER_00: So between him and your mom, they're like bookends.
• 10:56
SPEAKER_03: Yes, my mom was on the other side, but I don't think she realized what was going on as much as my dad was more in tune to, I think, because I grabbed on to him.
• 11:04
SPEAKER_03: Because obviously the male, he was stronger.
• 11:07
SPEAKER_03: My mom was a little five foot two, one hundred and twenty pounds woman.
• 11:12
SPEAKER_03: So I don't think she could have handled me, you know, grabbing onto her, but but my dad, yes, he was 6'4 and 180.
• 11:19
  SPEAKER_00: Wow.
• 11:20
SPEAKER_00: Look, that's something you don't forget, right?
• 11:22
SPEAKER_00: That would look, we're talking about it now.
• 11:24
SPEAKER_00: Something you did not forget.
• 11:25
SPEAKER_00: So obviously, there was something there.
• 11:28
SPEAKER_00: So, what wisdom would you want your future self to hold on to?
• 11:33
SPEAKER_00: Pretty much the same thing.
• 11:34
SPEAKER_03: Start lit, make sure you're listening to yourself.
• 11:37
SPEAKER_03: Your body will tell you before your mind does.
• 11:42
SPEAKER_03: But all too often we're good at rationalizing things away.
• 11:46
SPEAKER_03: But listen to your intuition, it is it doesn't lie there for a reason.
• 11:53
SPEAKER_03: We're given that it doesn't lie, and it's coming more in tune of listening to that intuition.
• 12:00
SPEAKER_03: Get in tune with yourself.
• 12:03
  SPEAKER_00: That's a big deal, though.
• 12:04
SPEAKER_00: They talk a lot about that.
• 12:06
SPEAKER_00: They the experts, the doctors, the the marvels talk about that gut, that gut brain, right?
• 12:12
  SPEAKER_00: And I think that's what you're referring to.
• 12:14
SPEAKER_00: It's that that inner knower, not the logical knower, the inner knower that instinct like animals have.
• 12:23
SPEAKER_00: We're wired up that way, but for some reason we talk ourselves out of it a lot of times.
• 12:27
  SPEAKER_00: So that's a great message.
• 12:29
SPEAKER_00: Who has been, and this is going to be a hard one, and you could elaborate, it could be more than one, but who has been one of the most memorable mentors in your life and why?
• 12:41
  SPEAKER_03: That's a great question.
• 12:43
SPEAKER_03: And you're right, it is a hard one because I think it it depends on where I was in in my life and what I was doing.
• 12:52
SPEAKER_03: Growing up, I had a couple of teachers that were instrumental that that saw my purpose, saw my potential, and encouraged that.
• 13:05
SPEAKER_03: I think I'm gonna give a shout-out to my high school English teacher in junior high who said that I couldn't write, and that was the impetus for turning it around that I probably would never get an A out of the class or nothing more than the C.
• 13:20
  SPEAKER_03: And I ended up with a best-selling book.
• 13:22
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and then many years later, a best-selling book.
• 13:25
  SPEAKER_03: But is this strange?
• 13:27
SPEAKER_03: I wouldn't, she's not a mentor, but how people can challenge you and push you in a way that you didn't to bring out your best.
• 13:35
  SPEAKER_03: The silver lighting.
• 13:38
SPEAKER_03: Yes, career-wise, I had a couple of great bosses, one in particular, his name was John Handel.
• 13:49
SPEAKER_03: Just an overall great guy, great person, great to work for.
• 13:56
SPEAKER_03: Again, some so many people.
• 13:58
SPEAKER_03: I think right now, my mentors, I would say, would be Dominic and Julie Logan.
• 14:05
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, they're awesome.
• 14:06
SPEAKER_03: That I'm doing right now with the coaching and writing, and even JC Dornick, the dragon, with the podcasting and stuff that I started.
• 14:18
SPEAKER_03: Those all have they're all good people, have mentored, I've looked up to them.
• 14:25
SPEAKER_03: There's so many more, many people I come into contact with.
• 14:29
SPEAKER_03: I truly believe people come into our lives for a reason.
• 14:33
SPEAKER_03: Some stay longer than others for various reasons, but they're here to help us, support us, guide us, maybe even for us to help them as well.
• 14:44
SPEAKER_03: Because I think giving back is so important and is part of our purpose as well, is giving back what we've been shown and what we've been blessed with to bless others.
• 14:56
SPEAKER_00: Well, that reminds me of a slogan a lot of philanthropy has a lot of organizations, service above self, right?
• 15:02
  SPEAKER_00: Service above self.
• 15:03
SPEAKER_00: And I'll do a shout out to Rotary because I'm a Rotarian, and that's one of our slogans, and that's what it reminds me of.
• 15:08
SPEAKER_00: And if it wasn't for Dr.
• 15:10
SPEAKER_00: JC Dornick, also known as the Dragon from Making Sense podcast, and Julie Logan, who is a co-founder for CreativeCon, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now.
• 15:22
  SPEAKER_03: I totally agree.
• 15:24
SPEAKER_00: Our paths may never have crossed for many reasons, not only your personal story, but even our relationship, right?
• 15:31
SPEAKER_00: So we crossed paths because of their wonderful work, but it's going above and beyond.
• 15:36
  SPEAKER_00: So that's beautiful.
• 15:37
SPEAKER_00: I just want to give a little shout out to love.
• 15:39
SPEAKER_00: We got Nancy E Shapiro coming in.
• 15:41
  SPEAKER_00: I know Nancy, she's a great friend.
• 15:44
SPEAKER_00: Thank you for tuning in.
• 15:45
SPEAKER_00: We got some love on LinkedIn, and we also have Holly, who you mentioned.
• 15:49
SPEAKER_00: Could tell us a little bit about Holly.
• 15:51
  SPEAKER_00: I don't want to, I don't want to take it away.
• 15:53
  SPEAKER_00: Go ahead.
• 15:54
SPEAKER_00: Tell us a little bit about Holly.
• 15:55
  SPEAKER_00: We'll do a little sidebar here.
• 15:57
  SPEAKER_03: I will today.
• 15:59
SPEAKER_03: Holly was instrumental in editing my story.
• 16:03
SPEAKER_03: So shout out to Holly.
• 16:07
SPEAKER_03: She's she actually perfected the words.
• 16:10
SPEAKER_03: Here's any for anybody that wants to write a book, write it.
• 16:15
  SPEAKER_03: That's why there's editors, that's why there's people like Holly.
• 16:18
SPEAKER_03: They will take it and make it better.
• 16:22
SPEAKER_03: Not change your words, not do anything to take away from the story.
• 16:28
  SPEAKER_03: They will enhance it.
• 16:30
SPEAKER_03: So if anybody has any doubts about their story and they're afraid to write because of how it's gonna look or gonna sound, there's edit, remember there's editors.
• 16:41
  SPEAKER_03: So shout out.
• 16:42
SPEAKER_03: Thank you, Holly, for reading my story.
• 16:45
SPEAKER_00: I love that you said enhanced it because every expert has an eye for something, right?
• 16:51
SPEAKER_00: And editors have an eye for that.
• 16:54
SPEAKER_00: So I love that you mentioned that because it's enhancing, they're not changing their story, they're not writing your story, they're enhancing your story so people benefit the most, not only you, but again, service above self.
• 17:07
SPEAKER_00: So, what does legacy mean to you personally?
• 17:10
SPEAKER_00: And again, it's a big question, and we could talk three hours about that one, but overall, what comes to mind?
• 17:18
  SPEAKER_03: That's such a powerful, important word.
• 17:21
SPEAKER_03: I love the word, and I think it's about how you're living your life.
• 17:28
SPEAKER_03: And for me, I try to make each day the best that I possibly can, whether it's to help somebody, sometimes helping myself get over, challenge myself to get over a certain hump.
• 17:45
SPEAKER_03: But it's all about how we live our lives.
• 17:48
SPEAKER_03: I dabble in genealogy, so I've been fascinated going and researching my family history and actually visiting some of their graves in Kansas and other places.
• 18:03
SPEAKER_03: And these are the graves of two and three times great-grandparents that gave up everything to come to America to start a life.
• 18:13
SPEAKER_03: And my hat's off to them because it's like, would I be courageous enough to do that?
• 18:19
SPEAKER_03: And yet, what I find in the cemeteries is so interesting.
• 18:22
SPEAKER_03: When you look on the tombstones, you've got the birth and then the death date, but in between you've got this dash.
• 18:30
SPEAKER_03: And the legacy is what are you doing with that dash from the day you're born to the day you die?
• 18:38
SPEAKER_03: You've got all that time.
• 18:40
  SPEAKER_03: Maybe it's only a year, maybe it's a hundred years.
• 18:44
SPEAKER_03: But what are you doing with that time to better yourself, better your family, and leave the world in a better place?
• 18:55
  SPEAKER_00: Beautifully said, beautifully said.
• 19:02
SPEAKER_00: Listen, I have a soft spot for that too, of that word, as we know here we are on Livia Legacy, but that was beautifully said, and thank you for expanding on that because I resonate with that, and I think a lot of us do, if not everybody.
• 19:21
SPEAKER_00: And again, living a life to be remembered, it's really special.
• 19:25
SPEAKER_00: So thank you for that, share.
• 19:27
SPEAKER_00: What do you hope people remember you most about the way you lived, worked, or served?
• 19:35
SPEAKER_03: That I did my best that I was a loving mother to my kids, and that I tried my best to help others be their best versions of themselves.
• 19:52
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's beautiful.
• 19:57
SPEAKER_03: My kids are far from it, so I'm I may have married, chosen the wrong person, but I don't regret it in that I had three beautiful children.
• 20:09
SPEAKER_00: Oh, you are you reading my mind?
• 20:11
SPEAKER_00: Because I was just gonna ask you if you could do it all over again, would you change anything, or did every part of your journey have a purpose?
• 20:18
  SPEAKER_00: You're a mind reader now.
• 20:20
  SPEAKER_00: Go ahead.
• 20:21
SPEAKER_03: No, I truly believe that every step that have that I've lived along to today has brought me to right here and now has helped me grow, has helped me better understand.
• 20:35
SPEAKER_03: If we don't learn from our mistakes, if we all make mistakes, but if we fall down and we don't get back up, then we failed.
• 20:47
SPEAKER_03: It's okay to make mistakes, it's okay to get back up and to try again.
• 20:54
SPEAKER_03: And you and yes, sometimes we have to tweak something here or tweak something there, but life is about learning, and then I also think it's also about giving away some of our hopefully or some of the wisdom so that maybe somebody else might listen and think twice.
• 21:13
SPEAKER_03: Maybe they get they're getting a red flag from a relationship and thinking, I wonder.
• 21:20
SPEAKER_03: And if they take that pause and do that research and say, maybe I may have just saved a life, I may have just saved some heartache.
• 21:32
  SPEAKER_00: 100%.
• 21:33
SPEAKER_00: And I'm glad you said that because if you didn't say that, I and I'm gonna still say this somebody right now needed to hear that.
• 21:42
SPEAKER_00: Somebody right now needed to hear that.
• 21:43
SPEAKER_00: And if they're not hearing it right now, somebody needs to hear that.
• 21:47
  SPEAKER_00: I I'm certain of it because that's a strong message.
• 21:53
SPEAKER_00: We got some more love here.
• 21:54
SPEAKER_00: We got a Holly Totten again, publisher, no editor, excuse me, uh Debbie.
• 22:00
  SPEAKER_00: Your story is amazing.
• 22:01
SPEAKER_00: Loved working with you on it.
• 22:02
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's so beautiful.
• 22:03
  SPEAKER_00: And that's so cool.
• 22:05
SPEAKER_00: How the editor then really knows your story.
• 22:08
  SPEAKER_00: Really, yeah.
• 22:09

SPEAKER_03: And in many ways, I'm very blessed.
• 23:20
SPEAKER_03: And don't get me wrong, but I do I do struggle like everybody else.
• 23:27
  SPEAKER_03: And it's okay.
