Transcript
- 0:00Hi and welcome to the Curve Weekly. The podcast that keeps you up to date with all the money,
- 0:06business and stock market tea. Everyone should experience for us at least once in their lives
- 0:10and Annie shouldn't miss out just because she can't afford it. Help me, I'm cool.
- 0:15Oh dear, we've had a weekend. We've had a weekend. I feel like we need some like monster energy drink
- 0:22or a red bull or we both put those eye, you know those eye jelly patches under your eyes when
- 0:28you get bags and then meant to do the truck and they haven't really. I don't know. I don't know
- 0:32what I look like on camera but I definitely feel like mine haven't. Oh god. I wish I could
- 0:38wear them every day and then just slowly get younger and younger. I actually do wear them every day.
- 0:43I love putting them on and doing a meditation. Yeah. Because then I have to keep my eyes closed and
- 0:47keep them on. I love them. Can I put them in the fridge so they're like cooling? Nice. Yes. So good.
- 0:52Yeah. Big size. Oh gosh. Are you okay? I'm good. Yeah. No, I'm good. Yeah, you know,
- 1:06just the fun world of dating. I know. Up, down, sideways, right around the corner. Yeah, it's pretty.
- 1:15I don't even know the word. You know, it's funny because like last week when I shoot about my ghost
- 1:20and I have a few people commented just being like, oh, it's so great to, you know, just feel like
- 1:26you're keeping up with your friends and your dating life. And we were like, we're probably going
- 1:29to have to share this week like tap in, you know, because I think actually we were having a laugh
- 1:35last week and it was actually funny. But it's not always that funny because sometimes it's just a
- 1:40bit shit and a bit brutal. Yeah. Sometimes you just have a big old cry and you're actually not feeling
- 1:45great. Yeah. And that is the reality of being, you know, a 30 year old woman in the dating world.
- 1:51Yeah. It's like a full time job. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But I guess the positive of this weekend is that
- 2:01you know, there is so many wonderful, amazing people out there in the world. And the best thing
- 2:07to someone is to get in with someone else. Not in that much of the sense. I feel like it might
- 2:12be worth if you feel comfortable. No. Well, you know, I mean, yeah, look, okay, long story short,
- 2:22dating. You had a bit of a complex situation where you were dating someone for a while. It was
- 2:30quite intense because you were, you know, I think also when you start dating someone if you're about
- 2:34to move overseas, it always makes no sense. And you know, you kind of like put sort of like six months
- 2:41of dating into two weeks, you know, like it just naturally happens. You want to speak as much
- 2:44time as you're, because you're leaving. Yeah. And then when you leave, I think we always romanticise
- 2:50the idea of keeping in touch with someone from different places. Yeah. And it's actually way
- 2:54harder than you think. And then sometimes even though you haven't been talking to someone
- 3:00and or seeing them heaps, it doesn't really matter. Like as soon as you call something and it's
- 3:06like, okay, it's actually over now. It's such a weird thing where you almost sort of have closure,
- 3:11right? Because you're not in the same place. You haven't had like a break up. Yeah. But you still
- 3:16can't help but feel kind of shit about it. Yeah. And I guess books just like kind of go on through
- 3:20the motion. And you know, when it just you have all kind of comes to a head and you're like, oh,
- 3:24shit, I have to deal with this now. Yes. And you know, it's going to be better, but you just got
- 3:28to live in the shit for a bit. Yeah. And it's always like when you sort of end something of someone,
- 3:32you always know you're going to be fine. Yeah. And you date other people and you realize gosh,
- 3:37there's so many cool people in the world, but you're in that feeling of like this. And I've been here
- 3:41before. I got out of it. Yeah. Like met someone else. It's fine. You know, like it's kind of you,
- 3:46you do get over it and you become stronger and more resilient and all of that. But yeah, it is
- 3:51shit. It does suck. It's real shit when you feel like. Yeah. I mean, I just think in general,
- 3:57rejection is the stingiest emotion, human emotion. Yeah. And not that it's rejection, by the way.
- 4:02Redirection. But I just mean like the idea of something not working out that you want to. Yeah.
- 4:08It's such a, it's such a shitty feeling. And you just think of it like, yeah, just fast forward.
- 4:13It's just like a waste of a waste of time, which is just kind of like, yeah, like I'm like, oh,
- 4:19I could have, I could have saved myself six months. But you have fun. I think that's the thing that's
- 4:23hard. Yeah. Yeah. And anyone's like, you learn from this one and you take it to the net, but it's like,
- 4:29yes, but I feel like I've done a lot of learnings. Yeah. Yeah. Sometimes we're just like, I don't
- 4:34wait enough now. Yeah. I'm keen to not keep not keep learning. Thank you. I don't want to learn
- 4:39anymore. I know it all. I know it all. God. God. Anyway, I am proud of you. Thanks for sharing. I
- 4:48think it's really hard to talk about when things aren't that great, but the whole point of this
- 4:51podcast is we always share like the laughs. And I think it's also good to know, like the old me
- 4:56would have probably wallowed in my sorrows all day and made myself feel ten times worse, whereas
- 5:04the new me went on a date two hours later. Sorry, I hope either person is not listening. But I
- 5:15was proud of you. I think honestly, there's a difference between moving on too quickly, which I
- 5:19think and you're just trying to cover up and not feel anything. I don't think you're doing that.
- 5:23Yeah. But I think it was a real, I was really proud of you because it's scary going on a date.
- 5:28Yeah. Especially when you've even met before, especially when you're feeling a bit vulnerable.
- 5:32Yeah. But to go and have a really fun time. It was so fun. Yeah. And remember there's so many
- 5:36brilliant people in the world. Totally. Yeah. I was just like, I was so proud of you. We actually
- 5:41we didn't crash your date. Yeah. It's so cool. Come here. And we were like, it's all sitting there.
- 5:45I was like, oh, is this weird that I've now got my friends here. But I was like, oh, I mean,
- 5:49it was like four hours and it was fine. It's still like me and my friend like, we rode past
- 5:55our line bikes and we were like, oh, this is not cool. Like we're not the cool friends that are
- 6:01showing up. We like had to dismount around the corner because they're like, it's so bad.
- 6:06Oh gosh. Yeah. Anyway, we just thought that you know, I would do a little life update.
- 6:12Now we're going to talk about the markets. Yes. Well, I mean, there's been a lot going on.
- 6:16Yeah. I've had a lot of dating life lately. Yeah. Yeah. So we should wrap up this call.
- 6:21Yeah. Yeah. And get back to what the listeners want.
- 6:23Yes. Well, I mean, yesterday was the FIFA World Cup, the female FIFA World Cup. And that was like
- 6:29we were fighting here at the moment. It's been crazy how cool it is to hear how many women are
- 6:37like, where are you watching the game? Yeah. Everyone has shown them. Yeah.
- 6:40No, but I just mean like, I think traditionally a lot of us haven't taken too much,
- 6:45like not notice, but just wouldn't have planned our weekend around seeing a game if we haven't
- 6:50already been invested in watching it in the past. But now everyone was like, we're all watching it.
- 6:55Yeah. Yeah. On the bandwagon, what's happening? Where are we going? Yeah, I guess congrats to Spain.
- 7:00Yeah. Pretty amazing. It was amazing to watch. Yeah.
- 7:04Was it? Yeah. I mean, I've got to be honest. So I was like, oh, so what happened in the game?
- 7:10That's like, oh gosh. I didn't pay much attention. Yeah. And that's I was busy working
- 7:14preparing for podcasts. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. You see, divine conquer. Yeah.
- 7:19I'll watch the TV. Thank you. And you did the print. But anyway, it got us thinking because
- 7:26there has been so much hype and there was so much attention on the FIFA Women's World Cup.
- 7:32This year, we thought we would do some, we have a discussion around men versus women
- 7:39and the difference that they get paid in terms of the prize money, the difference, the teams get paid,
- 7:44all of that. So we already know we're going to be getting so much. I know. I know. But when we spoke
- 7:51about the difference between men and women's tickets for Wimbledon, we had like over 500 trolls.
- 7:58It was crazy. Being like, and the reason that they get paid more is because there's more
- 8:04dealership and all sorts of comments. I imagine we're probably going to get
- 8:07our total in your life by this. I mean, what we thought would be really interesting is to hit
- 8:11the streets. We bought a camera. One of those little, sorry, not camera, like TikTok
- 8:16microphone. Yeah. We went to the streets and we asked people if they knew the difference between
- 8:22the men's and the women's prize money for the FIFA World Cup. So the men's FIFA World Cup final
- 8:30team, the winning ones, get paid 42 million. Do you have any idea or do you want to just take a
- 8:35guess at what you think the female winning team gets? Well, I know it's going to be a lot, lot less.
- 8:41Yeah, yeah. I love that you know how many people are in the team. It's going to say 18
- 8:45million. 800K maybe? I think probably not. 45.
- 8:4918,000. 25. I said 10. 21 million. Five million? Two million. A million?
- 8:56There's four million. Four million. Four mil. I've snuck.
- 9:02Gender pay up right there. I mean, I was pretty shocked when I found this out. So unsurprisingly,
- 9:07a lot of people on the street were too. Yeah. I mean, I knew it would be less just because
- 9:12we know it's going to be less. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like it's like, you know, women's, a lot of
- 9:18women's sport is they do get paid less than that. Well, so what was the prize money? What was the
- 9:22title? So the men's World Cup prize money is $440 million. And so is that total that gets distributed
- 9:32between like first, second, third, etc. Yep. And the winning team gets 42 million.
- 9:38Okay. And that's kind of scaled to second, third. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:43The women's, so sorry, what was the men's again? 440 million prize pool with 42 million
- 9:51for the top winning team. Half. So like, no, 200 for the total. Oh, 150.
- 10:02Lower. 100. 110 million for the women's. So they get so the prize money is a quarter.
- 10:08A quarter. And then what does the winning team get? $4.3 million. Comparatively to 42.
- 10:1542. Yeah. Wild. God. Like, it's like kind of saying that their quarter is good. Yeah. Which is
- 10:25wild anyway. Oh, dear. So we'll just leave that there and I can comment their opinions.
- 10:32I think that was going to like drop. We'll just move on. That's so the women get paid quarter of
- 10:38the amount that men do in terms of prize money. FIFA. Listen up. All right, everybody.
- 10:46What are you doing? Good enough. Yeah. Okay. Shit. Not great. Not great. You know what? I wonder
- 10:51though, because what was the viewership this year? Surely it's gone up a shit load.
- 10:54Because I think now that there's so many more people that have started to be infested in
- 10:58sock. I reckon there's a lot of people listening. They're like, um, hello. I've always been
- 11:02interested in. Yeah. Definitely aware that we could have paid attention sooner, by the way.
- 11:08But now that we're invested, I feel like it's become as a real movement in the female sports
- 11:13industries. Yes. So to see, I don't know, I think just even though England didn't win,
- 11:18because obviously we're here. So everyone around us was really wanting the British
- 11:23team to win. Even though they didn't, it does feel like a bit of a win
- 11:28for female sport in general. Totally. Yeah. It's almost like there's this tidal wave coming.
- 11:33And we're all starting to jump on it, which I love. All the likes snowball of like,
- 11:39yeah, women being paid more or closer to the same amount as men. And all of us supporting it.
- 11:45Because the audiences are growing. And that's kind of what drives prize money,
- 11:50revenue, you know, marketing spend and all of that. So yeah, keep supporting female sports.
- 11:56Yeah. Watch this space in other news. So, uh, do you remember the movie, The Big Short?
- 12:03Not really. Who was in a Christian bail?
- 12:06Anyone else? What was it about? I mean, I love these people. I love Ryan Gosling, but I don't know
- 12:12Ryan Reynolds. Ryan Reynolds. Oh, yeah, yeah. Um, what was it about?
- 12:16So this was the movie about the global financial crisis and how everything unraveled
- 12:23and the stock market fell and 2008. It's really, it's a good, really good movie.
- 12:29Kind of like Wolf of Wall Street Esk. So there is a main character in that movie called Michael
- 12:35Barry, who was played by Christian Bell. And he's a real person. He's a real person.
- 12:40Well, it's a real life event. And so his character is played by Christian Bell. Yeah.
- 12:47Anyway, and he predicted the housing collapse in 2008. So the start of the global financial crisis,
- 12:53he predicted that. And so he made a ton of money. He made, I think it was like 700 million dollars.
- 13:01Because he pulled his money out of the right time. No, so sorry. So he was short the market,
- 13:05which means that you benefit this one. I know, no, no, no, let me, let me. Okay.
- 13:10It's when you, you benefit or you get a return when the stock market falls as essentially
- 13:17all you need to know. Yeah. So almost the opposite. Yeah. So rather than investing in a company,
- 13:21you think it's going to grow. You invest in companies that you think are going to fall. Yes. Yeah.
- 13:25And you benefit when the share price falls for the stock market falls. So he was like, I think
- 13:31it's going to fall. And he bought heaps of things. Basically, he was short a lot of things.
- 13:36Okay. Instead of long, which is what we call when you actually own,
- 13:40go on something anyway. So he was short the market, meaning he benefited when the market fell.
- 13:45And yeah, he made, I think it was 400, nearly, nearly 500 percent
- 13:51when the stock market was had fallen. And he has, his fund and his investments were up like 500.
- 13:58Anyway, he was, he was considered the like, oh my gosh, no one else saw this coming.
- 14:03You're so smart. You made so much money for yourself and your clients, you know, well done.
- 14:08It sounds a little bit like, you know, there were all those people that were talking about the
- 14:12world ending. I predict that, you know, they end of the calendar is near. But if you,
- 14:18if you said that kind of stuff and it all started to come true, people would start listening to you.
- 14:23So they're the Aladdin or something. Yeah. And that's exactly what he's done now. Oh,
- 14:27shit. What's he predicted? Yeah. So he's bet $1.6 billion that the stock market will crash by the end
- 14:33of 2023. Oh, no, because now that he's put that out there, everyone's going to believe him
- 14:39and take their money out. So it's going to fall anyway. So the stock market has been falling for the
- 14:43last kind of week or so. Yeah. Like it's down a bit. I mean, it has had a really good run this
- 14:49year. So it's kind of almost taking a breather. But shit, Vic. So he's bet 90 percent of his firm's
- 14:55portfolio on this. So this is a huge bet. So he's saying a huge risk. Admittedly, there has been
- 15:02times when he's done things like this and it hasn't worked out. But because he's quite famous,
- 15:06everyone is like, oh gosh, should I take my money out? Anyway, we don't, we're not entirely sure.
- 15:10Oh my god. Someone's saying us a DM about this today. Yeah. Someone was like, please, can you
- 15:14guys talk about this? And I didn't know what it was. I just forwarded it to Vic and I was like, I was
- 15:19like, yep, already already on it. Anyway, it's not entirely clear his reasoning because you don't
- 15:25have to let people know. It was just that it was publicly disclosed. But you don't have to publicly
- 15:30disclose the reason why you're buying or selling anything. So just the amount. So that's why everyone
- 15:34has been like, oh gosh. What does this, sorry, what does this make you feel as an investor who's
- 15:40worked in the industry for a long time? Have you seen anything like this happen? Do you like,
- 15:45just how does it, what does it goes through your brain when you see this? Nothing. You just think
- 15:49I'm not going to touch right now. I just think this is the nature of investing. Yeah, okay.
- 15:53If the stock market crashes, I'll invest more. But I'm not taking my money out in the prediction
- 16:00from this guy that might fall. You know, I'm just, I definitely that crossed my mind when you
- 16:06see that. I was like, oh shit, should we be taking our money out? But then what if he's wrong?
- 16:09And then the stock market continues to go up and up and up. Yeah. And you've just missed out on
- 16:13those gains. So that's kind of why it's, it's taken with a grain of salt, but it does, it is a bit
- 16:17of scare mongering. I think this is the thing for me is because I've had to, I keep having to
- 16:21withdraw money from my portfolio because I keep running out of money. And I haven't built my
- 16:26emergency fund up enough. Thank you to the money reset, but haven't quite like nailed everything
- 16:31that I needed to from it yet. What? So if I need to take money out from my investments. Yes.
- 16:38And it's crashing. And I have to take it out when it's worth less than what I've, like that's
- 16:42scary to me. Yeah, that's why you shouldn't take money out. I know. I know.
- 16:48You're within your mind, etc. I have heard that, Victoria. No, it's just that London's an expensive
- 16:54place and I'm definitely sliding backwards. Yeah. It doesn't really matter how much I budget. I'm
- 16:58not really able to. Yes. But this is why, this is why we say, you know, if you've got that investing
- 17:07goal, this shouldn't matter. If you're investing goals 10 years, you know, the stock market will
- 17:13probably go down then back up for you know, you know, I'm like I fully get that premise. But the
- 17:18problem for me is that because I've had to be taking money out quite regularly. Well, then your
- 17:22money shouldn't be in an investment. It's kind of because if you do need to, you're investing horizon
- 17:27or time frame is 30 days or yeah, if I run out of money. Yeah. Yeah. Or like two weeks or so
- 17:34maybe that's what I should do. Take a chunk out and put it in a savings account opposed to
- 17:38like any answer. Yeah. Because what I'm trying to do at the moment is build up my save it like my
- 17:43emergency fund, which is taking the either, whereas maybe what I'm better to do is take a chunk out
- 17:48like $5,000 or 10 or whatever. Yeah. Put that in a savings account as my emergency fund because I
- 17:53know if I need it urgently. I'm not pulling money out and it's worth less. Yes. And then leaving
- 17:57the rest of it in investments. Yes. I think that's actually I didn't know why I haven't even thought of
- 18:00all of that. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Just a ramble of my own. No. Just like, oh, I've sort of that.
- 18:06Yeah. Thanks everyone for listening. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. No, you've run nose. What I'm
- 18:09going to do about you. Sorry. What's happening in the world? Yes. And then last thing from me is
- 18:14that global wealth fell by 2% last year, which means... So globally we're worth 2% less than we
- 18:24were. Yes. And this is the first drop since 2008 financial crisis, which we were just talking about
- 18:29before. So again, there's kind of time. But one fascinating stat is that 45% of the world's global
- 18:39wealth is owned by the top 1% of people. So one percent of people control 45% of the global wealth
- 18:48wild. That is kind of terrifying. So almost 50% of global wealth is controlled by 1% of the population.
- 18:58And the other 50% is divided by the 99% of other people. Yeah. Crazy. When you hear stuff like
- 19:05that, do you know what it makes me think? There is so many people who could be contributing massively
- 19:12to all the major environmental social issues that we're facing. Totally. It's actually individuals
- 19:20really. Yeah. I mean, yes, there's obviously the commercial element and companies, but also the
- 19:26Jeff Bezos of the world. You don't need an extra couple billion dollars. No. You've got everything
- 19:32else. Yeah. Like, don't be at pin 15 and give your money to... You know? So anyone that is below
- 19:40the age of 28 probably won't remove that pin 15. But we used to say instead of ping-pong that's
- 19:44back in the day. So good. And the number of millionaires fell by 3.5 million. So there is now 60 million,
- 19:55millionaires in the world. So that means people that have over a million dollars in net worth
- 20:02is 60 million of those people. So three times the size of Australia. But how would they know? Because
- 20:06you technically would be a millionaire because of your house. I mean, I end your assets, right? But
- 20:11have you lodged that? Like, how would they know? Yeah. Well, this is the thing. It'll be skewed.
- 20:19So most of them reside in the US and China. But I would have thought like Abu Dhabi or
- 20:25Middle East would have. But again, it's like countries that record it as well. You know, like,
- 20:31I can't imagine India would have a really good record system. But yeah, it's your net worth. So
- 20:39your assets, all of that. And it's hard. I mean, if people don't disclose that, then they're not
- 20:44going to know. So there's 60 million millionaires. Yeah. They doesn't sound like a lot to me.
- 20:49No, it doesn't. I mean, I know that three, do you say three times Australia? Yeah.
- 20:52Which is a shitload of people. But when you think about how many billions of people
- 20:56there are in the world, it's such a small percent. I wonder, I wonder, you know, the top one
- 21:02percent we were talking about, the top one percent of who have nearly 50% of the global wealth.
- 21:10I wonder how much those people have. Like, I wonder what their net worth are, because it would
- 21:16be 200 trillion. Just over 200 trillion. Each. No. Collectively. 200 trillion. But that's
- 21:25what I mean. I wonder, like, of that one percent, how much each of those people have, you know,
- 21:31like who's the most wealthy in the second world? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. But interesting, yeah, interesting
- 21:36stance. Yeah. There is a lot of wealthy people in the world, and a lot of not wealthy people,
- 21:41either. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. And that night, I'm going to have a cup of tea.
- 21:46Yeah. Have a cup of tea. And go to bed. Eat some chocolate.
- 21:50I give you a cuddle. Don't have a message.
- 21:53Message? Have some like, girls time. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. We love you.
- 21:58We're going to have a pillow fight. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Get no on days and the girls night.
- 22:02Oh, we have got a really great episode coming out on Wednesday. I know this sounds like
- 22:09kind of self-indulgent, but it's about my grandma's portfolio and how she basically
- 22:14started investing from the age of like 30 and created a million dollar portfolio. We go through
- 22:22like what she invested in. It's a really cool episode. So that's coming out on Wednesday for
- 22:25anyone else to a son. And if you have any questions about the curve classroom, we've got the
- 22:30foundations of investing coming out. Well, it's starting in September. So if you'd like. Yeah.
