- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37How exciting this is for Phillip and how exciting it is for you
- 0:40and me when you have a chance to tell someone about what the Lord
- 0:45has done for you. And how much more exciting it
- 0:48is. Whenever they start responding
- 0:50and their eyes start lighting up and they're getting questions
- 0:53and they want to know and maybe they get to the point.
- 0:56Well, how can I know this? Jesus, there's nothing more
- 0:59exhilarating in life to have the opportunity to see God bring
- 1:04someone into salvation because you were faithful to tell them
- 1:08about Jesus. Amen.
- 1:10Sometimes you won't be received well when you go out telling
- 1:14people about Jesus. Eventually you'll find someone
- 1:17receptive to the message and you'll be able to lead them to
- 1:20Christ. The love and salvation of the
- 1:23Lord can reach more people through you.
- 1:26Pastor Clark will explain in today's message that that's what
- 1:29a healthy relationship with Christ looks like, growing in
- 1:33him every day and telling others about what he did for them.
- 1:37It's good news that's meant to be shared with everyone around
- 1:40you. Now here's Pastor Clark in the
- 1:42book of Acts Chapter 8 with today's edition of Living Waters
- 1:46of Grace. If you have your Bibles there,
- 1:48turn in your Bibles to Acts chapter 8.
- 1:51What was it like to be in the Roman Empire at the time that
- 1:55Christianity first began? I think at times for us in this
- 2:00country, we we feel like the way we are working right now as a
- 2:04nation is, is not real good obviously.
- 2:06But we have to understand that this is not uncommon in world
- 2:10systems. And I wanted to just review a
- 2:12few things regarding the terrible sexual morality that
- 2:16was going on in the time of the Roman Empire when the apostles
- 2:20were first starting out with the Gospel Society at that time was
- 2:24deliberately throwing off any kind of vision that Christians
- 2:30would have for sexual ethics. Things that were once considered
- 2:35unthinkable at that time were now being deemed natural and
- 2:39good. And this time that we're living
- 2:42in isn't the first time that Christians have had to live in
- 2:45times of of sexual immorality. The New Testament church was
- 2:50birthed in a time where the world was utterly opposed to
- 2:55Christian morality. Just not today.
- 2:57Not just the day we're living in, but the days that our
- 3:00brothers and sisters first were brought into the Kingdom of God
- 3:04in the book of the Acts. Most of the New Testament texts
- 3:07that Paul had wrote, we're dealing with sexual immorality
- 3:11within the world and within even the community of the church
- 3:15predominantly at that time in Roman cities.
- 3:18And so there's these three ugly features of Roman sexuality.
- 3:22And I'm not going to get too graphic.
- 3:24It's, it's pretty gross. But it was socially acceptable
- 3:27at this time for a strong Roman man to have intercourse with men
- 3:33and women alike. Does it sound anything different
- 3:36than what we're experiencing today?
- 3:38A real man would be having sex with his slaves, whether they
- 3:42were male or female. He would visit prostitutes, and
- 3:45he would have homosexual encounters even while being
- 3:48married. The sexual relationship between
- 3:52an adult man and an adolescent boy was unfortunately, all too
- 3:56common. Pedophilia was understood to be
- 3:59good and acceptable at the time. The culture was full of extreme
- 4:05promiscuity and inequality. Yet the system is evil as it
- 4:09looks to in our eyes, was accepted and even celebrated by
- 4:13Rome. Isn't it fascinating how our own
- 4:15country is celebrating this stuff now?
- 4:18It was foundational to Roman culture, least not to protest
- 4:22against it. To be loyal to the Empire, you
- 4:25had to be loyal to the morality of the Roman Empire.
- 4:29To the Romans. A biblical view would have been
- 4:32very disruptive to the social fabric and demeaning of Roman
- 4:36ideal of masculinity. Christianity at that time
- 4:40condemned the Roman system in every part.
- 4:43The Christian sexual ethic limited intercourse to married
- 4:48man and wife that protected children and gave them dignity.
- 4:52Christianity did not simply represent an alternative system
- 4:56of morality, but one that condemned the existing system,
- 5:00the system that was foundational to Roman identity and stability.
- 5:05Christians were considered outsiders.
- 5:07Christians were traitors. Christians were dangerous.
- 5:10Their brand or morality threatened to destabilize all of
- 5:13society. No wonder then they were scorned
- 5:16and even persecuted. Right now, as I read this
- 5:19article, I can't seem to grasp this fact that we're living in
- 5:24times that are so similar to what this empire had lived and
- 5:29experienced. Our early Christian brothers and
- 5:32sisters had to understand the difficulty at the time that this
- 5:38unconfession of biblical chastity in a safe culture was
- 5:42what they wanted and what obviously we want today as well.
- 5:47The morality that was being taught and practice stood out is
- 5:51unnatural to the Roman world. My pastor in Philadelphia says
- 5:55Whatever happened to this normal, good old fashioned sin,
- 5:59Right. Sin is so warped now and weird.
- 6:04I mean, it used to be like adultery, That's bad enough, but
- 6:06pedophilia? And how much deeper and darker
- 6:09can the culture and the society go into in regard to immorality?
- 6:13Christian sexual ethics that limited intercourse to a
- 6:17marriage between a man and a woman, a woman, was not merely
- 6:21different from the Roman ethics, but yet they utterly brought
- 6:25down their own institution of what they thought was normal in
- 6:29the beginning. And it just became more and more
- 6:31perverse as the days went on. This is why the Christians faced
- 6:35so much hostility at the time. And this is a very same thing
- 6:38that's happening today in the halls of our government.
- 6:42We are having people who are legislating immorality.
- 6:45It's a minority group that's wanting you and me to slowly
- 6:49embrace same sex marriage or eventually this pedophilia idea.
- 6:55It's it's like the frog in the firing pan that the heat keeps
- 6:58being turned up. The media keeps talking about
- 7:01the pros and cons or whatever. And after a while you get tired
- 7:04of hearing it. And your response might be,
- 7:06well, it doesn't really affect me.
- 7:08I'm not going that way. What does affect you?
- 7:11It affects me. It affects everyone.
- 7:13It affects your kids. What's being taught nowadays in
- 7:17public school systems is just beyond our dreams.
- 7:21I mean, when I was a kid in school, we had the Pledge of
- 7:23Allegiance and we said the Lord's Prayer and we had the 10
- 7:27commandments. None of that's there now.
- 7:30This is how far we've fallen as a society and a culture.
- 7:33Now, the good news is, is that in the 1st century, the
- 7:36Christians were men and women of great courage.
- 7:39They confess their values and their morality in a spirit of
- 7:43bravery. They confess and practice
- 7:46Christian morality. And today we need to be brave as
- 7:49well and have the willingness to obey God rather than men, even
- 7:54in the face of persecution. So when you think about Philip
- 7:58and all these guys in the early book of the Acts, sometimes
- 8:02we're reading this sort of like in a vacuum.
- 8:05We have to really think about what were they living in at the
- 8:09time? What was the culture like?
- 8:11It was worse than what we're dealing with right now.
- 8:13So take heart, take courage. The majority of the people in
- 8:17our country are pro-life. The majority of the people in
- 8:22our country are pro marriage between a man and a woman.
- 8:27The majority of the people in our country are against
- 8:30pedophilia. So don't let the media think
- 8:33that it's the other way around, OK?
- 8:35They're making millions of dollars to twist our minds and
- 8:38to water down our convictions. That's why it's critical to vote
- 8:42a lot of some when Christians, I don't vote.
- 8:44It's not worth it. It's definitely worth voting.
- 8:47You need to vote. Every vote counts.
- 8:51And if you don't vote, you're basically living apathetically
- 8:55and complacently in a world that you still have the ability to
- 8:58have a voice. The good news is, is that we are
- 9:02to be salt and light in the world.
- 9:03And we have the ability, by the power of the Holy Spirit and the
- 9:07Word of God, to stand our ground and not to compromise and not to
- 9:12neutralize and not to be apathetic or complacent, but to
- 9:16be bold and be loving and be gentle.
- 9:19Because people that embrace these convictions of immorality
- 9:22are lost. They don't know Jesus, OK?
- 9:25Many of us were embracing those values at one time before the
- 9:28Lord saved us, right? It's important to understand
- 9:31that. So when we study the book of the
- 9:33Acts here today, Philip is called the evangelist.
- 9:36He's the only man in the New Testament called literally the
- 9:39evangelist. We're called in the Bible, all
- 9:42of us as Christians to do the work of an evangelist.
- 9:44And that means simply being open to sharing your faith with
- 9:48someone that doesn't know anything about Jesus, OK.
- 9:51And so we pick it up here in verse 26.
- 9:54And this is the the whole issue here.
- 9:57Previously, Philip was down there preaching the gospel in
- 10:00Samaria. Big revival happened.
- 10:02A lot of people got saved. Now the Lord is working in his
- 10:06life to work with one person. So one person to God isn't more
- 10:10important than 1000, right? God is not looking at numbers or
- 10:14population. He's looking at one heart, one
- 10:16person at a time. And so Philip is sensitive here.
- 10:19An Angel of the Lord in verse 26 of Acts 8 spoke to Philip saying
- 10:24arise and go toward the South along the road which goes down
- 10:27from Jerusalem to Gaza. It's interesting in a Bible you
- 10:31can read these things and read them quickly and not sort of
- 10:35reflect on the fact that this is a big deal that an Angel spoke
- 10:38to him. Now was he more important than
- 10:40you or me? I've never had an Angel speak to
- 10:42me yet I, I, I welcome that if that's what the Lord's will is
- 10:45for me. But then how do I discern if
- 10:47it's a an Angel of darkness or an Angel of light?
- 10:50They, they both can sort of float in the same atmosphere
- 10:54and, and work in the same way. But the interesting thing about
- 10:57the word of God is, and we're taught throughout the Scriptures
- 11:00that God's main focus and main way of speaking to your heart
- 11:05and mind is through the word of God, the written word of God by
- 11:09the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
- 11:11I don't need an Angel to know what the Lord wants me to do.
- 11:13And you don't either. I got Genesis through Revelation
- 11:16and there's more information than I actually need to have
- 11:19that I need to follow and, and and accept and and live live in,
- 11:23you know, but this Ethiopian eunuch is, is a man in a
- 11:28chariot, this worshipping in the Jewish sense driving down the
- 11:32road and we're going to read what what happens here.
- 11:34So Phillip is getting this sense of of God wanting to do
- 11:38something arise and go toward the South along the road which
- 11:41goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.
- 11:44There's two roads that go down that way.
- 11:45This one was more of the difficult Rd.
- 11:48This is the desert. And so he arose and he went, and
- 11:51behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under
- 11:55Candace, the queen of The Ethiopians, who had charge of
- 11:58all her treasury and had come to Jerusalem to worship, was
- 12:02returning. Now, when you read this, I don't
- 12:05know about you, but like, I like to look things up when I read
- 12:09something. I'm like, what's the eunuch?
- 12:11Does anybody ever look at that definition?
- 12:13Sex change operations were happening back in the 1st
- 12:16century. The church That it's a
- 12:18castration of a male, they have no ability to have sexual
- 12:22relations. That people who were in empires
- 12:24and cruel and controlling wanted to make sure that those who
- 12:28served them weren't having sexual union with their
- 12:31concubines or trying to overthrow a government by
- 12:35developing another group of people.
- 12:37And for some reason this was accepted back in those days.
- 12:40I I don't hear much about it now.
- 12:42I'm glad that this is isn't a requirement for people, but
- 12:46strange, isn't it? And so this person is a eunuch
- 12:49and he's basically not able to ever have a family or have
- 12:53children, but he's committed to this woman, Candace, the queen
- 12:57of The Ethiopians. Now, Ethiopia at that time was a
- 13:00large area that covered just not Ethiopia, but down into Sudan
- 13:03and those various regions. He was a man of great authority,
- 13:07it says. And he handled the treasury of
- 13:10this whole land of Ethiopia. It's a very, very prominent
- 13:13person. He had come as a seeker to
- 13:16Jerusalem to find out about Jehovah God.
- 13:20And as he's there, he's still thinking about things and he's
- 13:23sitting in his chariot and he's reading Isaiah the prophet.
- 13:27Now to have a, a scroll back in those days, the, the Bible
- 13:30wasn't complete like it is here now that we have what a blessing
- 13:34what we have. You had to buy it in scrolls and
- 13:36specific books. And it was it was quite
- 13:39expensive. And so he's up there with this
- 13:41big scroll reading the writings of the prophet Isaiah and the
- 13:44Spirit. The Holy Spirit in verse 29 said
- 13:47to Philip, go near and overtake this chariot.
- 13:52So he had to run. It says in verse 30.
- 13:55So Philip ran to him and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah
- 14:00and said, Do you understand what you are reading now in your
- 14:04life? In my life, the Holy Spirit is
- 14:06speaking to us all the time about all kinds of different
- 14:09things that the Lord wants us to do.
- 14:12I would trust you hear His voices.
- 14:14I desire to hear His voice too. What is the will of God for your
- 14:19life and mine? What is it that the Holy Spirit
- 14:21is wanting you and me to do on a daily basis?
- 14:25God sets up divine appointments all over the face of the earth
- 14:28for one-on-one connections with people to talk to them about
- 14:32their struggles or their problems.
- 14:34I got a phone call this morning, the wrong wrong time to answer
- 14:38the phone. I was in the radio room and just
- 14:40felt compelled to answer the phone and the person on the
- 14:42phone was saying that they needed some help.
- 14:45And usually they start with church, starting with A and they
- 14:48work the way all the way down to the end of the alphabet to try
- 14:50to get money with this person had a girlfriend that needed
- 14:54help and she didn't have any place to stay.
- 14:57And this guy couldn't help her because his father wouldn't help
- 15:00him or something. All these excuses.
- 15:02I said, well, why don't you come to church today and we can meet
- 15:06you and we can talk and maybe, you know, think about what might
- 15:09be the next step for you and her and he.
- 15:12And he said, well, where's the church at?
- 15:14And I told him, he said, well, I don't know if I can get there.
- 15:16I said, well, we're here every Sunday at 10:30, right?
- 15:20They like you to send them a check or put them in a hotel and
- 15:23you never meet them and you don't have any ability to have
- 15:25any kind of opportunity. But I said you really need to
- 15:27get connected with a community of believers.
- 15:29You can have a family and you can get help and you can find
- 15:32out about the Lord and the ways of God and that kind of stuff.
- 15:36But he wasn't interested in that, you know.
- 15:38And so, but I think about everything being being a divine
- 15:41appointment. You show up somewhere, someone
- 15:44tells you something and you have a chance and to tell them about
- 15:48your relationship with the Lord, that's a divine appointment.
- 15:51The appointment is really divine.
- 15:52Whenever the person starts asking questions and they're
- 15:55interested in what it is you have to tell them, like in this
- 15:58instance here with this Ethiopian eunuch and Philip.
- 16:02And so the, the response to this question, he says, well, how can
- 16:07I unless someone guides me? And he asked Philip to come up
- 16:10and sit with him. So no question in Philip's mind
- 16:12was, wow, God's up to something here.
- 16:15This guy's already prepared to hear about Jesus, and I just get
- 16:20a chance to tell him about him and explain things to him.
- 16:24How exciting this is for Philip and how exciting it is for you
- 16:27and me. When you have a chance to tell
- 16:30someone about what the Lord has done for you and how much more
- 16:34exciting it is whenever they start responding and their eyes
- 16:37start lighting up and they're getting questions and they want
- 16:40to know and maybe they get to the point, Well, how can I know
- 16:43this Jesus? There's nothing more
- 16:45exhilarating in life to have the opportunity to see God bring
- 16:50someone into salvation because you were faithful to tell them
- 16:54about Jesus. Amen.
- 16:56My wife is talking about this over and over.
- 16:58We were praying the other night. We had a profound discussion
- 17:02about life and aging and kids and grandkids and family and
- 17:07older moms and just everybody that's in our life and how we
- 17:10want to be used by the Lord together as a couple and not be
- 17:14thinking about ourselves or our opinions or our feelings.
- 17:18But how can we more be more giving to others and less
- 17:21focused on this ourselves? And she told me, and I mentioned
- 17:26this briefly, but I want to bring it up again.
- 17:28She happened to be in a neighborhood where her mom lives
- 17:30in a older development. And she had a chance to visit a
- 17:34neighbor about some unrelated matter.
- 17:37And she went in and the woman was crying and her daughter was
- 17:40there. And Cindy said, what's wrong?
- 17:42She's why going to break up my home.
- 17:43My husband's died. I got to leave this place.
- 17:46I can't handle it myself. They're going to put me in a
- 17:48personal care home now and just seems like my life is this
- 17:51ending and I got all this stuff. I don't know what to do with it.
- 17:54And and she was just overwhelmed and distraught, this woman and
- 17:58Cindy began to tell her about the Lord and she finally got to
- 18:02the point of asking the lady if she could pray for her.
- 18:05And she says, oh, I would, I would love that.
- 18:07And so Cindy got to pray for her and got to impact this woman for
- 18:10Christ. And she said, Clark, that's all
- 18:13I want to have a chance to do in life, to have those kind of
- 18:16opportunities, those kind of divine appointments, because she
- 18:19said there's nothing that makes you feel any better than that
- 18:21kind of opportunity and experience, right?
- 18:24And you guys know you've been there, you've done it.
- 18:26And and so this is the opportunity that we're learning
- 18:30about today in the book of the act.
- 18:31This is Philip's encounter and God personalized it.
- 18:34So you and I can sort of think as we study this together, how
- 18:38can I be like Philip and be open to the Holy Spirit and be ready
- 18:42to tell someone that they need Jesus?
- 18:45And so Philip runs over and he is going to begin to speak to
- 18:50him. In verse 31, this man says, I
- 18:52can't understand any of this unless someone guides me.
- 18:55And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him.
- 18:58The place in the Scriptures which he read was this.
- 19:01He was led as a sheep to the slaughter.
- 19:04This is from Isaiah chapter 53, verses 7 and 8.
- 19:08Doesn't matter where you go in the Bible, you can always take
- 19:10wherever it is in the Bible and lead people to the truth of who
- 19:14Jesus is. And as a slam before its shears
- 19:17is silent, so he opened not his mouth and his humiliation, his
- 19:21justice was taken away and who would declare his generation for
- 19:26his life is taken from the earth.
- 19:29Now you and I being believers right away, we know, hey, that's
- 19:32Jesus, that's prophetical, that's been fulfilled in the
- 19:35death, the burial, resurrection of Jesus Christ.
- 19:37But the eunuch is hearing and reading this for the first time.
- 19:41So the eunuch answers Philip and says, I ask of you, of whom does
- 19:45this prophet say this? Of himself or of some other man?
- 19:50And that's sort of the view of the Jewish people when they read
- 19:53Isaiah 53. If you ask a Jewish person, who
- 19:56do you think that's about? They'll say, well, that's a
- 19:58prophet or that's about the Messiah.
- 20:02Or they might just be honest and say we have no idea when we read
- 20:05that what that's talking about. South Philip opens his mouth
- 20:10and, beginning at this Scripture, preaches Jesus to
- 20:13him. So not only did he cover this
- 20:16section of Scripture in Isaiah of this being fulfilled when
- 20:21Jesus came to earth, but he would go into the teachings of
- 20:26the Gospels and the experience that they've had already in the
- 20:29book of the Acts with the preaching of the gospel and how
- 20:32thousands of people are becoming believers because they're
- 20:35hearing about Jesus saves for the first time.
- 20:38Jesus saves from sin, Jesus forgives sin, Jesus cleanses us
- 20:43from sin. And so when Philip is preaching
- 20:47to Jesus, to him, and they're going down the road, it says now
- 20:50as they went down the road, they came to some water, interesting
- 20:54water. And the eunuch said, see, here
- 20:56is water. What hinders me from being
- 21:00baptized back in those days, they had public baptism.
- 21:03It wasn't done in the backyard of someone's home or in the YMCA
- 21:07or in some church facility. They love going out into the
- 21:12community in the streams and lakes and rivers and get a big
- 21:16crowd of people around and have people publicly baptized.
- 21:19Because when that happened, the culture all the sudden said,
- 21:22something's going on here with these Christians.
- 21:24Every time I turn around, they're, they're, they're being
- 21:27dunked underwater and they're, they're following Jesus.
- 21:31What's going on here? And it convicts them.
- 21:33And maybe they're thinking I'm missing out on something or I
- 21:36should be baptized or I should follow Jesus.
- 21:38I mean, all kind of thoughts happen when people see other
- 21:41people baptized, as this man recognized right away the
- 21:46significance of water, and water represents purification and
- 21:50cleansing. He would have been taught that
- 21:52in the school of Judaism. But that water can't cleanse us
- 21:56from our sin. It's a purification, right?
- 22:00Temporal. But it can't wash away sin, only
- 22:03the blood of Jesus Christ. What can wash away my sin?
- 22:06Nothing but the blood of Jesus, right?
- 22:09We sang about that this morning, The blood of Jesus.
- 22:11That's without the shedding of blood.
- 22:13There is no remission of sin. If we walk in the light as
- 22:18Christians, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one
- 22:21with another. We have this communion, we have
- 22:23this oneness, we have this unity, and the blood of Jesus
- 22:26Christ, God's Son, cleanses us from all sin.
- 22:30Amen. If we confess our sin, he is
- 22:33faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from
- 22:37all unrighteousness. It takes the blood of Jesus to
- 22:40do that, the only sacrifice that could take away our sin.
- 22:44And so Philip says to him, if you believe with all your heart,
- 22:48you may. Now when you think about when
- 22:51you first became a believer and the Lord brought you to the
- 22:57knowledge of your need of salvation, and you began to
- 23:02think about, you know, this, this power of the of the cross
- 23:07and what it can do for you. You realize that first of all,
- 23:12when you believe, you were maybe in front of someone that
- 23:15understood you were believing, or maybe you were by yourself
- 23:18when you believed like I was, but you knew that now you
- 23:21believed. You once didn't believe and now
- 23:23you believe a young man that used to come to this church.
- 23:26I'll never forget the story. Wonderful young man and friends
- 23:29of some good family here. And he had come from a Catholic
- 23:33background and he never really heard, he said, the Gospel.
- 23:36He just felt that he was hearing about religion every Sunday.
- 23:39And so I got to know him after a while.
- 23:41And I said, well, by the way, you know, how did you come here?
- 23:44And he told me and and then I said, were you a Christian?
- 23:48And he said, yeah. I said, well, how did that
- 23:49happen? He said one Sunday.
- 23:51I'm just sitting here and all of a sudden I believed.
- 23:54Isn't that awesome? Thanks for joining us on this
- 23:58journey through Acts. On today's edition of Living
- 24:01Waters of Grace, Pastor Clark shares that one of the most
- 24:04remarkable things about the book of Acts is how it shows the
- 24:08disciples transformation. The followers of Jesus we meet
- 24:12here are very different from the often confused and fearful
- 24:17disciples in the Gospels. After Jesus's death and
- 24:21resurrection, and especially through the power of the Holy
- 24:24Spirit, the apostles experienced a profound change in their
- 24:29hearts and boldness. Their faith became unwavering,
- 24:33and they moved forward with courage to spread the gospel
- 24:36despite opposition and hardship. Acts reminds us that the same
- 24:41Spirit who empowered them is at work in US today, shaping our
- 24:46hearts and giving us strength to live boldly for Christ.
