- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Real Talk with Mike D. All right, welcome
- 0:06Speaker 1: back to Real Talk with Mike D. I am the one,
- 0:09Speaker 1: the only, and the original Mike D. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 0:13Speaker 1: today we're talking about one of my favorite times of year, Halloween.
- 0:17Speaker 1: That's right. The pumpkins, the costumes, the candy, the decorations,
- 0:21Speaker 1: the scary movies, the cold weather, the leaves changing, and
- 0:26Speaker 1: that feeling you get when October rolls around and you
- 0:28Speaker 1: know Halloween is right around the corner. Now, I don't
- 0:31Speaker 1: know about you, but Halloween was a completely different experience
- 0:34Speaker 1: when I was a kid. Back then, Halloween was simple.
- 0:38Speaker 1: You put on a costume, grabbed a pillowcase or a
- 0:41Speaker 1: plastic pumpkin, and you went door-to-door asking complete strangers for candy.
- 0:46Speaker 1: And somehow, that was normal. Think about that for a second.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Your parents basically said, okay, it's nighttime, go knock on
- 0:54Speaker 1: strangers' doors and ask them for candy. And somehow, we
- 0:58Speaker 1: all survived. Halloween as a kid was about one thing.
- 1:02Speaker 1: How much candy can I get? You weren't thinking about calories.
- 1:06Speaker 1: You weren't thinking about sugar. You weren't thinking about whether
- 1:09Speaker 1: you were going to feel sick afterward. You were thinking,
- 1:13Speaker 1: how many houses can I hit before everybody turns their
- 1:15Speaker 1: lights off? And then, there was always that one house.
- 1:21Speaker 1: You know the house I'm talking about. The house that
- 1:23Speaker 1: went all out. I'm talking about fake spider webs, graveyard
- 1:27Speaker 1: in the front yard, skeletons hanging from trees, fog machines,
- 1:31Speaker 1: scary music, maybe somebody dressed up like a monster hiding
- 1:35Speaker 1: behind a bush. And as a kid, you're standing there thinking, yeah,
- 1:39Speaker 1: I'm not going to that house. But then you see
- 1:42Speaker 1: the kids coming out with their candy and you're like,
- 1:44Speaker 1: wait a minute, what kind of candy did they get?
- 1:47Speaker 1: Suddenly you're willing to risk your life for a Snickers bar.
- 1:50Speaker 1: That is Halloween. Now, Let's talk about some costumes because
- 1:57Speaker 1: when you're a kid, Halloween gives you the opportunity to
- 2:00Speaker 1: be anything you want. You can be a superhero, a vampire,
- 2:04Speaker 1: a monster, a firefighter, a police officer, whatever you wanted
- 2:09Speaker 1: and nobody questioned it. You put on that costume and
- 2:12Speaker 1: suddenly you were that character. You didn't care if it
- 2:16Speaker 1: looked ridiculous. You didn't care if somebody laughed. You were
- 2:19Speaker 1: having fun. And that's something I think adults can learn from.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Kids don't spend a lot of time worrying about what
- 2:26Speaker 1: other people think. They just enjoy the moment. They put
- 2:30Speaker 1: on the costume. They go outside. They laugh. They run around.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And they eat way too much candy. And they have
- 2:36Speaker 1: a good time. Then somewhere along the way, we grew up.
- 2:42Speaker 1: And suddenly we're worried about everything. What people think. What
- 2:46Speaker 1: people say. Whether we're successful enough. Whether we're making enough money.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Whether we're just doing enough. Or whether we're good enough.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And sometimes I think we need to get back to
- 3:00Speaker 1: that kid inside of all of us. The kid who
- 3:03Speaker 1: didn't care what anybody thought. The kid who just wanted
- 3:05Speaker 1: to have fun. Halloween reminds me of that. It reminds
- 3:09Speaker 1: me that life doesn't always have to be so serious.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Sometimes you just need to put on a ridiculous costume
- 3:16Speaker 1: and laugh. Sometimes you need to decorate the house. Sometimes
- 3:20Speaker 1: you need to watch a stupid horror movie. Sometimes you
- 3:23Speaker 1: just need to eat a piece of candy, or two,
- 3:26Speaker 1: or maybe three. And sometimes you just need to enjoy
- 3:30Speaker 1: the moment. Now, Halloween also brings back memories. And that's
- 3:36Speaker 1: one of the things I love about this time of year.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Certain smells can take you back. Certain songs can take
- 3:42Speaker 1: you back. Certain movies can take you back. Even the
- 3:45Speaker 1: weather can take you back. You step outside and it's cold.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Maybe it's snowing. Maybe the leaves are falling. The sky
- 3:52Speaker 1: gets darker earlier and suddenly you're remembering Halloween from years ago.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Maybe you're remembering being a kid. Maybe you're remembering your friends.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Maybe you're remembering your family. Maybe you're remembering someone who's
- 4:04Speaker 1: no longer here. And that's the thing about getting older.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Halloween isn't just about costumes and candy anymore. It's about memories.
- 4:13Speaker 1: It's about looking back at where you've been and realizing
- 4:16Speaker 1: how quickly time goes by. Because when you're a kid,
- 4:20Speaker 1: you think Halloween is going to last forever. You think
- 4:23Speaker 1: you're always going to be that age. You think you're
- 4:25Speaker 1: always going to be running around the neighborhood. And then
- 4:27Speaker 1: one day, poof, you're an adult. And you're standing there wondering,
- 4:33Speaker 1: where the hell did all those years go? That's one
- 4:36Speaker 1: of the strange things about getting older. You don't realize
- 4:40Speaker 1: you're living through the good old days until they're already
- 4:42Speaker 1: behind you. And maybe that's why Halloween hits differently now.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Because When you're younger, you're excited about what's coming. When
- 4:50Speaker 1: you get older, you start appreciating what you've already experienced.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And there's nothing wrong with that. That's life. Now, we
- 4:59Speaker 1: have to move on to the age-old debate. The Halloween candy.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Because we need to settle this once and for all.
- 5:08Speaker 1: What's the best Halloween candy? I'm going to tell you
- 5:12Speaker 1: right now. Everybody has an opinion. Some people want chocolate.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Some people want peanut butter cups. Some people want Snickers.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Some people want Twix. Some people want M & M' s.
- 5:23Speaker 1: And then there are the people who get handed a
- 5:25Speaker 1: box of raisins on Halloween. Who in the hell decided
- 5:30Speaker 1: raisins were Halloween candy? Imagine being eight years old. You've
- 5:35Speaker 1: been walking around the neighborhood for two hours. You've got
- 5:38Speaker 1: a pillowcase full of candy and somebody opens the door
- 5:40Speaker 1: and gives you raisins. You don't even say thank you.
- 5:45Speaker 1: You're just standing there thinking, do you hate me? And
- 5:51Speaker 1: then there's the house that gives out those little orange
- 5:53Speaker 1: peanut candies. Ladies and gentlemen, nobody wants those. Nobody. You
- 6:03Speaker 1: get home and dump your entire bag on the floor
- 6:05Speaker 1: and suddenly you're performing quality control. You're saying that one stays,
- 6:12Speaker 1: that one can stay. That one's got to go. Who
- 6:15Speaker 1: the hell gave me raisins? But that's what made Halloween fun.
- 6:19Speaker 1: It was unpredictable. You never knew what you were going
- 6:23Speaker 1: to get. And sometimes the best part wasn't even the candy.
- 6:26Speaker 1: It was comparing your haul with your friends. How much
- 6:29Speaker 1: did you get? I got this. Oh yeah? Well, I
- 6:32Speaker 1: got two of those. It was basically the stock market,
- 6:36Speaker 1: but with candy. But you know what? Halloween changes as
- 6:42Speaker 1: you get older. Eventually you stop going door to door.
- 6:45Speaker 1: And then you become the person answering the door. And
- 6:49Speaker 1: that's when you realize Halloween is expensive. Because you're sitting
- 6:53Speaker 1: there thinking, how many kids are actually coming tonight? You
- 6:57Speaker 1: buy one bag of candy, then another, then another. Because
- 7:02Speaker 1: you don't want to be the house that runs out.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And suddenly you're sitting there with enough candy to feed
- 7:07Speaker 1: an army. And what happens? The kids stop coming. Now
- 7:13Speaker 1: you're stuck with all that candy. And you tell yourself,
- 7:17Speaker 1: I'm going to save this. No, you're not. You're eating it.
- 7:20Speaker 1: You're eating Halloween candy on November 1st. You're eating Halloween
- 7:24Speaker 1: candy into January 1st of the next year. And eventually
- 7:29Speaker 1: you're staring at an empty bag wondering, who ate all
- 7:33Speaker 1: the candy? You did. You know you did. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 7:40Speaker 1: that's going to do it for today. I greatly appreciate
- 7:42Speaker 1: you being here. I appreciate you listening. And I hope
- 7:45Speaker 1: you all enjoy Halloween as much as I do. I
- 7:49Speaker 1: hope you have enough candy. I hope you have a
- 7:51Speaker 1: lot of kids dressed up in their costumes. And I
- 7:55Speaker 1: hope your Halloween is spooktacular. Until the next episode, have
- 8:00Speaker 1: a great day. Peace! Music Thank you.
