- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, welcome to Busting with the Boys. We have
- 0:02Speaker 1: an awesome guest, Jamis Winston, Florida State Seminal Buccaneer, New
- 0:09Speaker 1: Orleans Saints Cleveland Browns Bro.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Thank you for coming on the show. You got massive
- 0:14Speaker 2: fans all over.
- 0:15Speaker 3: The place with Busting with the Boys, Man sound improvers
- 0:18Speaker 3: to be here among these greatness, this greatness.
- 0:21Speaker 4: Did you when you're coming out of college and the
- 0:24Speaker 4: whole crab let things happen? Who's gonna be first? You
- 0:27Speaker 4: were Marcus, Like I feel like there was a dip in,
- 0:29Speaker 4: like oh this guy, Like maybe people weren't appreciating your personality.
- 0:34Speaker 4: You flip over, it's been ten years now. You are
- 0:36Speaker 4: like the media darling. I watch you at Media Days
- 0:39Speaker 4: on Monday. The way you set up the joke for
- 0:42Speaker 4: what's your favorite color to Chris Jones, the way like
- 0:44Speaker 4: the comedic timing, the how authentic you are, Like talking
- 0:48Speaker 4: to Will he was at Barstow. We have never actually met,
- 0:51Speaker 4: like facers maybe one time after a game, yeah, but
- 0:54Speaker 4: hearing that, like you're the same guy, Like at any
- 0:56Speaker 4: point throughout your career where you're like, do I need
- 0:58Speaker 4: to be a little more like a model student? That
- 1:00Speaker 4: these teams want me to be or did you never
- 1:02Speaker 4: wavering who you were as a person?
- 1:04Speaker 3: Well, when I first got to Tampa, I think like
- 1:06Speaker 3: that was the compromise that I first made, like just
- 1:08Speaker 3: trying to get out of the get out of the
- 1:13Speaker 3: media as public enemy number one, because I wanted people
- 1:16Speaker 3: to really see who I truly was. So I invested
- 1:18Speaker 3: time in the community. I invested a lot of time
- 1:20Speaker 3: with my teammates. And I always consider myself like a
- 1:24Speaker 3: people pleaser, but that wasn't necessarily me at that time
- 1:28Speaker 3: in Tampa because I was like, man, I'm so I'm
- 1:31Speaker 3: so focused on me as the person. But when you're
- 1:34Speaker 3: a good person, you have to try to be a
- 1:36Speaker 3: good person. And I put so much thought, energy, in
- 1:38Speaker 3: so much time and effort to like, man, I gotta
- 1:41Speaker 3: show these people that I'm not who they think I am,
- 1:43Speaker 3: you know, but at the end of the days, it's
- 1:45Speaker 3: not actually it's not you're not who you think you are,
- 1:48Speaker 3: but what you think you are. So it's putting my
- 1:51Speaker 3: energy toward, like man, my play toward like developing a family,
- 1:55Speaker 3: spending month like in Tampa that was my young days,
- 1:57Speaker 3: you know. So like I'm in a new city, you know,
- 1:59Speaker 3: it's living young, wild and free. But at the same time,
- 2:03Speaker 3: I have a girlfriend that's living in Texas, you know,
- 2:06Speaker 3: so I'm trying to manage that relationship and also focus
- 2:10Speaker 3: on my dream, focus on winning the super Bowl, focus
- 2:12Speaker 3: on being the best quarterback and teammate I can possibly be,
- 2:15Speaker 3: and focus on being the best man that I possibly
- 2:17Speaker 3: be without the limitations and perception that others had of
- 2:20Speaker 3: me at that time.
- 2:21Speaker 1: When you are stripping those things off, Like, talk about
- 2:24Speaker 1: what it was like for you becoming a professional. When
- 2:27Speaker 1: you're around guys in the league that's been around a
- 2:29Speaker 1: long time, Like I'm thinking of Tampa. You're around like
- 2:31Speaker 1: Levonte David Gerald, McCoy, Mike Evans, like guys.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Who are becoming pros.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Because when you come out, you've been a duel through
- 2:37Speaker 1: at quarterback, you've been a man since high school. Yeah,
- 2:40Speaker 1: you've obviously major rounds in the headlines when you were
- 2:42Speaker 1: in college. And when you get draft and you're going
- 2:44Speaker 1: to Tampa, like, talk about what it was like for
- 2:46Speaker 1: you becoming that pro, stripping yourself of the you know,
- 2:49Speaker 1: the past and everything else and the perceptions that people
- 2:52Speaker 1: had about you, Like becoming that ultimate pro that you're
- 2:54Speaker 1: supposed to be in the NFL.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, one thing that a wise person shared with
- 2:59Speaker 3: me Joe Thaisman, and we had a tough conversation at
- 3:03Speaker 3: the Walter kemper Ward and we're talking about just like
- 3:07Speaker 3: I was just explaining him, like, man, Joe, like that's
- 3:09Speaker 3: not me, Like what you've heard about me on TV,
- 3:11Speaker 3: Like that's not me. Like I'm a Southern boy from Alabama.
- 3:14Speaker 3: I respect my elders, I respect everyone that I encountered with,
- 3:17Speaker 3: Like that's just how I was born and raised. And
- 3:19Speaker 3: he was like, James, He's like, I can tell look
- 3:22Speaker 3: in your eyes, I can tell that's not you. But
- 3:24Speaker 3: I want you to understand what this business is and
- 3:27Speaker 3: what public perception is. Perception is reality. So instead of
- 3:32Speaker 3: you telling me, or instead of you forcing people to
- 3:34Speaker 3: like you, or instead of you're trying to convince somebody
- 3:37Speaker 3: who you are, people gonna believe what they want to believe.
- 3:41Speaker 3: So you should just do that consistent, day in and
- 3:44Speaker 3: day out. He said. The more that you do that,
- 3:46Speaker 3: it's gonna come out who you truly are. He's like,
- 3:47Speaker 3: because you can't hide truth, Like truth is eventually gonna
- 3:50Speaker 3: come out to the light. But in terms of like
- 3:52Speaker 3: veterans like Jerey McCoy. Another veteran that that really helped
- 3:56Speaker 3: me was Lewis Murphy because he had a chance to
- 3:59Speaker 3: be in and in Oakland and Carolina around cam Noon,
- 4:02Speaker 3: Derek Carr and guys like that, Levonte David just his poors,
- 4:06Speaker 3: his presence in the time of community. Another big one
- 4:10Speaker 3: that y'all probably remember his name, Clynn MacDonald, like just
- 4:14Speaker 3: a true man of faith. I had the opportunity to
- 4:16Speaker 3: go to Like you know, when you're young, you're trying
- 4:18Speaker 3: to go to every event that your teammate has. So
- 4:21Speaker 3: the first time I went to Little Rock, Arkansas, it
- 4:24Speaker 3: was to one of his charity events for his foundation
- 4:26Speaker 3: with his family and just seeing him as a man
- 4:28Speaker 3: with his girls and his wife. And I took my
- 4:32Speaker 3: girlfriend at the time now wife, And that was one
- 4:35Speaker 3: of the changing points in my life in terms of
- 4:40Speaker 3: my commitment and my love and my consistency with my wife.
- 4:44Speaker 3: In terms of like when I saw that him represent
- 4:46Speaker 3: his foundation, people in his city coming to support him,
- 4:50Speaker 3: I understood, like man, like I know it's bigger than me,
- 4:53Speaker 3: and I have a partner who I can support and
- 4:57Speaker 3: who I can help lead to grow with me to
- 5:00Speaker 3: be involved with all these great things in community, family brands,
- 5:06Speaker 3: like all that stuff became important to me because I
- 5:09Speaker 3: saw this man, Clin McDonald religiously, like we went to
- 5:12Speaker 3: a football camp, he had a golf tournament, but who
- 5:14Speaker 3: he was in his community. I'm just like, man, like
- 5:16Speaker 3: this this is mean to my community. But what he's
- 5:19Speaker 3: displaying with his wife, with his kids in front of
- 5:22Speaker 3: his family is that consistency, That that that foundation, and
- 5:26Speaker 3: that's something that I'm chasing. So when I was in
- 5:29Speaker 3: little Roal, Arkansas, I was like, man, like, this is
- 5:31Speaker 3: who I'm going to be, and like I'm not waving
- 5:33Speaker 3: from this, like I'm gonna be intentional with my wife,
- 5:37Speaker 3: like I'm I'm gonna get that fixed. We're not about
- 5:40Speaker 3: to be going back and forth, like I'm gonna be
- 5:42Speaker 3: intentional with with what i want to do, how I
- 5:44Speaker 3: want to serve my community, how I want to impact
- 5:47Speaker 3: the younger generation. And obviously I feel like ball has
- 5:51Speaker 3: always been on the top of my mind because that's
- 5:53Speaker 3: something that we all have tried to perfect along guy journey.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Anyway, Oh yeah, you talked about like the ball being
- 5:59Speaker 4: the top of mind, Like NFL stands for not for
- 6:01Speaker 4: long in so many ways, like you only have a
- 6:04Speaker 4: finite amount of years to accomplish what your childhood dream was.
- 6:07Speaker 4: How do you find balance when you get home?
- 6:10Speaker 3: Well, you find balance about being all in on every stage.
- 6:16Speaker 3: And again of one of my biggest growth stages as
- 6:19Speaker 3: well in twenty nineteen where I got around Clyde Christensen
- 6:23Speaker 3: who coached Peyton, and you know, Peyton studied like no
- 6:27Speaker 3: like no other, and Clyde he was like, I was
- 6:29Speaker 3: the first person to really encourage him, like, hey man,
- 6:31Speaker 3: like what you do in this building is what you
- 6:33Speaker 3: do in this building, but once you go home, you
- 6:34Speaker 3: need to go home and be that same caliber studier,
- 6:38Speaker 3: same present person, same leader to your family. And I
- 6:41Speaker 3: was like, okay, So one thing that we did we
- 6:44Speaker 3: saw developing a plan. I never really had a plan, right,
- 6:47Speaker 3: Like I had my off season plan, but my nd
- 6:49Speaker 3: season plan was, you know, studying watching four games on
- 6:53Speaker 3: Monday Tuesday, getting an early bead on third downs, and
- 6:57Speaker 3: watching some more of the rundowns. But I never written
- 7:00Speaker 3: it down to what I was specifically specifically gonna do,
- 7:04Speaker 3: so I wasn't really holding myself accountable to the things
- 7:07Speaker 3: that I was doing to prepare. I was preparing. I
- 7:09Speaker 3: was laying on the line, but it wasn't strategized.
- 7:12Speaker 4: You're checking a box and yeah, you watch these four games. Boom,
- 7:14Speaker 4: I watch the four games. Yeah, watch a little bit.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Third down?
- 7:16Speaker 4: Okay, now, no third down.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I never put throw energy into the preparation side of it.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I just did it because I loved it, and I
- 7:23Speaker 3: knew what was required to be a successful quarterback, and
- 7:26Speaker 3: I knew I couldn't go out there unprepared. But I
- 7:28Speaker 3: never thought that me actually sitting down with my quarterback
- 7:32Speaker 3: coach planning what I am going to do, how much
- 7:36Speaker 3: accountability that brings. Because I'm saying, like, if I'm gonna
- 7:39Speaker 3: write this down and freaking in June, what I'm gonna
- 7:43Speaker 3: do in the months of September, October, November, and December.
- 7:47Speaker 3: That's a level of commitment to like doing those things
- 7:50Speaker 3: and making sure that you actually are being those things
- 7:52Speaker 3: and not just saying, oh, I wrote this down just
- 7:54Speaker 3: to write it for the love of the game.
- 7:56Speaker 4: It seems easy to check boxes for sure.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Field energy of jamis I'm already in this room, and
- 8:02Speaker 2: that lifts you up.
- 8:03Speaker 4: Yeah does like he's truly he's the rising tide that
- 8:05Speaker 4: is lifting our ship.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I appreciate y'all, but I'm gonna vote with y'all.
- 8:10Speaker 2: I've been seeing you getting in the mix.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Seeing you getting in the mix.
- 8:13Speaker 1: You had something you were you know Taylor was talking
- 8:15Speaker 1: about earlier, but hitting media.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Days on behalf of Fox Sports.
- 8:19Speaker 1: You've been going on pods, like do you ever get
- 8:21Speaker 1: fascinated by the things outside of football? Because we all
- 8:24Speaker 1: eventually the game comes for us all. Do you see
- 8:27Speaker 1: yourself doing something like something like that after football?
- 8:29Speaker 3: Man, I consider myself a man of increase. So whatever
- 8:32Speaker 3: I can do to uplift people, uplift a brand, uplift
- 8:36Speaker 3: a company, I'm gonna do it. But right now, like man,
- 8:39Speaker 3: my my main goal, like my contingency plan is none existent.
- 8:43Speaker 3: My main goal is to be a super Bowl winning
- 8:45Speaker 3: starring quarterback in this NFL league. And like, do you
- 8:48Speaker 3: know the time, the effort, the dedication and preparation that
- 8:52Speaker 3: that entails that you know, obviously, my my my charisma
- 8:56Speaker 3: who I am, Like, that's gonna that's gonna remain the same.
- 8:59Speaker 3: That's my foundation, my faith, that's who I am. That's
- 9:01Speaker 3: what I'm imitating. Christ So I know, like that's gonna
- 9:04Speaker 3: remain the same. But my dream is to lead my
- 9:07Speaker 3: team to the super Bowl and I still haven't done
- 9:10Speaker 3: that yet, and I can't. I would not allow myself
- 9:13Speaker 3: to be still in this business, still have opportunities and
- 9:17Speaker 3: not put dedicate my time and energy to assisting, serving,
- 9:23Speaker 3: or helping my team reach that goal.
- 9:25Speaker 4: Yeah, it's an impossible game to be half in and
- 9:27Speaker 4: half out about, especially as a starting quarterback when you
- 9:30Speaker 4: look at like the position you're in this year, Deshaun Watson,
- 9:34Speaker 4: he gets hurt. You come in and we go up,
- 9:36Speaker 4: we go down. We're kind of moving around little bit,
- 9:37Speaker 4: but you're slinging.
- 9:38Speaker 2: The ball everywhere.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Are you looking at guys like Baker Mayfield, who's you know,
- 9:41Speaker 4: went to the Browns people kind of cursed him out
- 9:43Speaker 4: of the building. He gets out of there, and now
- 9:44Speaker 4: he's like kind of reset himself and calibrate himself in
- 9:47Speaker 4: Tampa as a starting quarterback, Like what quarterbacks are you
- 9:49Speaker 4: watching me?
- 9:50Speaker 3: Like?
- 9:50Speaker 4: I need to imitate this to take the next stay
- 9:53Speaker 4: step for that so I can achieve the goal you
- 9:54Speaker 4: were just talking about.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Yeah, Honestly, the quarterbacks that I've been watching this offseason
- 9:58Speaker 3: has been Anon Rodgers and Russell Wilson because I think
- 10:01Speaker 3: they do a good job of limiting their own critical errors.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Uh and sometimes when their play uh, you don't see
- 10:08Speaker 3: like early on in both their careers, you see the
- 10:11Speaker 3: flashy they show you they can make a play when
- 10:13Speaker 3: it's time to make a play. But sometimes they play
- 10:16Speaker 3: games where you're just like man like they have took
- 10:18Speaker 3: eighteen consecutive checkdowns, you know. And I think that's the
- 10:21Speaker 3: part of my game where I have to really master.
- 10:23Speaker 3: I know I can win a shootout. I know I
- 10:25Speaker 3: can go out there and and surgically dissect any defense
- 10:31Speaker 3: that comes my way. But now the key to my
- 10:34Speaker 3: game to me, actually elongating my career is winning football
- 10:40Speaker 3: games and protecting our team to the best best be Like.
- 10:43Speaker 4: Definitely from an operation standpoint, is what you're talking about.
- 10:46Speaker 4: Talk to me, dude, explain to me Aaron Rodgers and
- 10:48Speaker 4: Russell Wilson. I've been a little negative. Russell Wilson had
- 10:51Speaker 4: he had a nice couple of weeks in the middle
- 10:52Speaker 4: of the season with the Steelers, but Aaron, those two
- 10:55Speaker 4: names like Aaron didn't have a great year like this.
- 10:57Speaker 4: The Jets were back on the Super Ball contending for
- 11:01Speaker 4: they're having a parade in man. Yeah, when he's when
- 11:03Speaker 4: he's coming back, it doesn't work out that way.
- 11:04Speaker 3: Why those two quarterbacks, well, those two quarterbacks specifically, because
- 11:07Speaker 3: I think they do a good job of having a
- 11:09Speaker 3: plan for the game. And they might not have five
- 11:14Speaker 3: hundred yards in the first half, they might have eighty yards,
- 11:17Speaker 3: but they know when to turn it on and when
- 11:19Speaker 3: to turn it off. And no, they didn't have like
- 11:22Speaker 3: Russ Probab didn't finish the way that he wanted to finish.
- 11:24Speaker 3: But if you watch the course of his games, man,
- 11:26Speaker 3: he is managing the game and is in complete control
- 11:30Speaker 3: of what he wants to do. Same thing with Aaron. Yeah,
- 11:32Speaker 3: he had some ups and downs. He didn't have the
- 11:35Speaker 3: year that he wanted to have, but still throughout the
- 11:38Speaker 3: consistency of his play weekend and week out is protecting
- 11:41Speaker 3: the team. He plays that like I call it. I
- 11:44Speaker 3: call it selfishly thinking about yourself, like they play in
- 11:49Speaker 3: a waiter like, Man, I'm not thinking about my stats.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I'm trying to see like I'm not going to mess
- 11:53Speaker 3: it up. I'm gonna let the other team mess it up,
- 11:55Speaker 3: and then when it's time for me to make a play,
- 11:57Speaker 3: I have the god given ability to go out there
- 11:59Speaker 3: and execute him.
- 12:00Speaker 4: Right, this is what you're basically, what you're saying is
- 12:02Speaker 4: knowing when to turn it on and turn it off.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, talk about the mental game, like when
- 12:07Speaker 1: you are out there slinging it one week and then
- 12:09Speaker 1: you have the pixures.
- 12:09Speaker 2: I think you had a couple of pig sixers on
- 12:11Speaker 2: like Monday night.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Like when you you hear the rumblings of you and interceptions, Like,
- 12:15Speaker 1: talk about the mental game. Do you ever get caught
- 12:17Speaker 1: up and turning the ball over when you have all
- 12:20Speaker 1: these touchdowns one week you turn the ball over next
- 12:23Speaker 1: Talk about like being able to separate, separate yourself, zoom out,
- 12:27Speaker 1: give yourself perspective, give yourself gratitude because just as athletes,
- 12:31Speaker 1: you just know that it is a constant mental game.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Like when you are.
- 12:33Speaker 4: Playing, have you basically what those askings? Have you ever
- 12:35Speaker 4: brought a book on the sidelines to read between series?
- 12:39Speaker 3: Never?
- 12:39Speaker 2: Never?
- 12:39Speaker 3: Never in my life, but I have. I have written
- 12:43Speaker 3: things on my wristband like patience, precision, execution feet. Uh.
- 12:50Speaker 3: The mental game is so important because like we all notice,
- 12:52Speaker 3: like as athletes, you know you hear the saying like
- 12:55Speaker 3: the game is nine mental, ten percent physical, and until
- 12:59Speaker 3: point it's true because we got our god giving abilities,
- 13:01Speaker 3: like we can do this, or we won't be able
- 13:03Speaker 3: to do this, or you won't be in a lead
- 13:04Speaker 3: long like right, they do a good job of assessing talent,
- 13:07Speaker 3: but I would have to credit my mental capacity in
- 13:10Speaker 3: terms of handling highs and lows one with my faith
- 13:13Speaker 3: journey and my knowledge of just the word of One
- 13:17Speaker 3: of my favorite verses is James two to four, say
- 13:20Speaker 3: is counted all joy, my brothers and sisters, when you fall,
- 13:23Speaker 3: when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing
- 13:27Speaker 3: of your faith produces patience, endurance. But let that endurance,
- 13:32Speaker 3: let that patients have its perfect work, so that you
- 13:35Speaker 3: can be complete, lacking nothing. Ultimately, That's what I'm trying
- 13:39Speaker 3: to do in terms of.
- 13:41Speaker 5: That quote, but in terms of game right now, but
- 13:45Speaker 5: literally in terms of my play, Like that's why I'm like,
- 13:47Speaker 5: I know, okay, some things are going to happen, right,
- 13:51Speaker 5: but when they happen, I counted as man.
- 13:54Speaker 3: I see the good in everything. I have joy and
- 13:58Speaker 3: when bad things happen, because now I get the opportunity
- 14:01Speaker 3: to make up for it. But sometimes that gets me
- 14:04Speaker 3: in trouble because I want to make up for it,
- 14:07Speaker 3: right then, But that's not start pushing the envelope. That's
- 14:09Speaker 3: but that isn't allowing the perfect work to happen. Sometimes
- 14:14Speaker 3: a good play is no play at all. Right, But
- 14:17Speaker 3: I view this in terms of the house and lows.
- 14:19Speaker 3: I view it from a baseball perspective. Okay, I'll play baseball,
- 14:21Speaker 3: y'all play baseball.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Growing up a little bit, a little bit center field.
- 14:25Speaker 3: So you get in the Hall of Fame, you get
- 14:27Speaker 3: in the Hall of Fame, go on one for three, right,
- 14:30Speaker 3: So it's a sport that okay's failure. Like as a quarterback, man,
- 14:36Speaker 3: what a great satisan, I want to go twenty two
- 14:38Speaker 3: for twenty eight, three hundred and seventy eight yards with
- 14:41Speaker 3: four touchdowns and zero interceptions. Right, twenty two for twenty
- 14:44Speaker 3: eight is perfect in baseball. If I told you, man,
- 14:47Speaker 3: I went twenty two for twenty eight this weekend with
- 14:49Speaker 3: eight doubles and four home runs and uh, you know,
- 14:53Speaker 3: three triples. Like that's unbelievable. But literally baseball terms, I
- 14:58Speaker 3: can go one for three and making it in the
- 15:01Speaker 3: Hall of Fame. That's a three hundred average. So understand,
- 15:04Speaker 3: Like Man, it's okay to fail, but I gotta make
- 15:08Speaker 3: the most of my opportunity when it's there. I gotta
- 15:10Speaker 3: have a snap and clear mentality because I might have
- 15:13Speaker 3: struck out this last at bat, but this at bat,
- 15:15Speaker 3: I have a chance, right, And I believe that, Like
- 15:18Speaker 3: you can see that in the way that I play.
- 15:20Speaker 3: I go out there with the approach like we have
- 15:22Speaker 3: a chance as long as there's time on that clock.
- 15:24Speaker 3: But I think I know understanding that, Man, I need
- 15:29Speaker 3: to play like for four quarters instead of just playing
- 15:32Speaker 3: for that specific specific drive. I need to play for
- 15:36Speaker 3: that specific play knowing that it's gonna take me four
- 15:40Speaker 3: quarters to win this game, instead of trying to win
- 15:43Speaker 3: on that one play.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, Yeah, you seem like it's like him going
- 15:48Speaker 1: back to Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson. It's like eliminating
- 15:50Speaker 1: things like, Hey, the game's gonna come on one play
- 15:53Speaker 1: at the time versus gotta be superman now.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Right In the next series.
- 15:56Speaker 4: Of all the people we've talked to in the short
- 15:57Speaker 4: amount of time we've been here, it's like maybe the
- 15:59Speaker 4: most intentional human being we very spoke to, Yeah, or
- 16:01Speaker 4: at least trying to find intention. Yeah, in every single
- 16:04Speaker 4: situation you brought a baseball dude going one for three
- 16:06Speaker 4: and being in the Hall of Fame, you had like
- 16:08Speaker 4: you were in a rare breed of athlete where you
- 16:10Speaker 4: were able to play. Choose whether or not you're gonna
- 16:12Speaker 4: go to the baseball route or with the football route,
- 16:14Speaker 4: what it everly brought you to. I'm gonna chase my
- 16:16Speaker 4: football dreams.
- 16:17Speaker 3: My love for this game, my love for the game
- 16:19Speaker 3: of football, my love for the h the position that
- 16:23Speaker 3: quarterback entails. Man. Like, I think when you look at
- 16:27Speaker 3: a leader in general, I think the quarterback is that
- 16:30Speaker 3: person that displays what true leadership is like, especially when
- 16:34Speaker 3: you got a good one and when you got one
- 16:36Speaker 3: that the team likes. You know what I'm saying. Because
- 16:38Speaker 3: we have to literally be able to communicate to everybody
- 16:40Speaker 3: in the locker room from all different walks of life,
- 16:44Speaker 3: all different backgrounds, Like we have to be the people
- 16:49Speaker 3: that can get in front of our guys and you
- 16:51Speaker 3: might be from our you might be from Broward County,
- 16:57Speaker 3: and we got to make this thing work all right,
- 16:59Speaker 3: And the only way we're gonna make can work is together.
- 17:01Speaker 3: And that's the quarterbacks role. The quarterbacks role is to
- 17:04Speaker 3: make all these little pieces work and go. So I
- 17:07Speaker 3: take pride in it. And I'm gonna tell you, when
- 17:09Speaker 3: you're a po and you're watching other people hit and
- 17:13Speaker 3: watch other people winning games, and you over there eating
- 17:15Speaker 3: seeds and chewing on big chew, it ain't no fun man.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Out of the Actually.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I had something that slip my mind.
- 17:25Speaker 1: I got one before even the Deshaun Watson goes down
- 17:28Speaker 1: and you get your opportunity. There is even conversations before
- 17:31Speaker 1: he goes down and putting Jamis in just because of
- 17:33Speaker 1: the quarterback play that was happening walk us through this year,
- 17:39Speaker 1: even before you getting to play, Like, how much were
- 17:41Speaker 1: you having to be patient and persevered when even you
- 17:44Speaker 1: might be able to say, like, I know it's a
- 17:45Speaker 1: backup somebody's not playing well, you're like itching. You're like
- 17:48Speaker 1: itching for that opportunity and your time to shine. But
- 17:50Speaker 1: what was it like for you early in the year,
- 17:52Speaker 1: especially when those conversations started to happen on a it
- 17:55Speaker 1: could be a move.
- 17:55Speaker 2: Here to put Jameis Winston in the game.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Yeah, man, you know I feel like I feel like
- 18:01Speaker 3: God put me in the test last year with Derek
- 18:06Speaker 3: where man, we would go out in games, and our
- 18:10Speaker 3: fans like the Saints fans like they booring, they boring,
- 18:15Speaker 3: and I have to sit in the meetings and I
- 18:17Speaker 3: felt like like from I see looking in the Shaun
- 18:19Speaker 3: is playing like like he's bad or they're playing bad.
- 18:22Speaker 3: But I felt like they're playing good because when I'm
- 18:24Speaker 3: on your team, I'm there to serve you. I'm not
- 18:27Speaker 3: there to serve the opin or listen to the outside noise.
- 18:30Speaker 3: I'm there to make this thing work. When I tell
- 18:32Speaker 3: all my team is like, if you're not trying to
- 18:34Speaker 3: be part of the solution, you're not trying to win
- 18:36Speaker 3: no games. I know that it's at the quarterbacks. It's
- 18:39Speaker 3: only one person that's gonna be out there one everybody else.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Or you play left tackle, you had a right time.
- 18:46Speaker 3: There's a left guard, there's a right guard, the center,
- 18:49Speaker 3: the quarterback. There are only ones that are singular out there.
- 18:54Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying. So I have to be
- 18:55Speaker 3: all in of serving the Shaun and last year's opportunity
- 19:00Speaker 3: Irv and Derek despite the outside noise. Now I also
- 19:04Speaker 3: know that my opportunity is coming shortly and I have
- 19:07Speaker 3: to be ready for that as well.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Do that is awesome yeah, that is because it's tough too,
- 19:13Speaker 1: because you talk about the dream, you want to lead
- 19:14Speaker 1: it Toto a super Bowl like you hear the outside
- 19:17Speaker 1: noise and everything else. But to compartmentalize and know that
- 19:19Speaker 1: he if you're not part of the solution, you need
- 19:21Speaker 1: to get out of the building because you're part of
- 19:22Speaker 1: the problem, or you're creating a problem or some toxic
- 19:25Speaker 1: poison that's in that locker room, which you know it
- 19:27Speaker 1: has to be eliminated if you're going to be a
- 19:29Speaker 1: good football team.
- 19:30Speaker 3: But will I started with this what I want for myself,
- 19:33Speaker 3: I want for everyone. So what if that was me?
- 19:36Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, Imagine how many people then
- 19:38Speaker 3: talk stuff about me my entire life right now, they
- 19:42Speaker 3: biting their tongue because they're like, over time, the truth
- 19:45Speaker 3: is gonna say itself free. And I tell you I
- 19:47Speaker 3: still tell the shown this, Like, brother, listen, you may
- 19:50Speaker 3: be going through a season of adversity, but I promise
- 19:54Speaker 3: you you're gonna make it out of this, despite public opinion,
- 19:58Speaker 3: despite what the everybody's on your case right now. But
- 20:02Speaker 3: if you don't give up and you just use the
- 20:05Speaker 3: ability that God. Because Desharn Watson can play football. You
- 20:08Speaker 3: know what I'm saying, a lot of people that as
- 20:10Speaker 3: fans that the twitter thumbs have they quit the judge somebody,
- 20:13Speaker 3: They quick to write somebody off. Because the game that
- 20:16Speaker 3: we play in the NFL, we have the greatest game
- 20:19Speaker 3: of them all. Because every senile year there are two
- 20:22Speaker 3: hundred and fifty six are people coming in to take
- 20:24Speaker 3: our spot that they're promoting this. They're like, we are
- 20:29Speaker 3: celebrating the people that's coming in to take your spot
- 20:31Speaker 3: with the draft, and we're gonna give them fake watches
- 20:34Speaker 3: and free watches. We're gonna we're gonna boost up the brands.
- 20:37Speaker 3: We're gonna take some of your deals and give it
- 20:39Speaker 3: to them. Even if they don't make it. They might
- 20:41Speaker 3: not get cut the first day in, but we're telling
- 20:43Speaker 3: you that they coming. So in terms of our mentality,
- 20:47Speaker 3: it has remained. We got to remain staff fast. We
- 20:49Speaker 3: can't never lose sight of what we want because we
- 20:51Speaker 3: know it's always gonna be the next man up. It's
- 20:53Speaker 3: always gonna be somebody cycling around. Guccia Mans always say,
- 20:57Speaker 3: while he's using the reference of of of his is
- 21:00Speaker 3: l flings, he would say, opportunities and like buses miss
- 21:04Speaker 3: one next fifteen one coming and you can look up
- 21:06Speaker 3: the regular laracy you want to do that, but literally
- 21:12Speaker 3: you might miss the bus. But you got to be
- 21:14Speaker 3: ready for that next bus to come, or you got
- 21:16Speaker 3: to be trying to bucket to get to the next
- 21:18Speaker 3: bus stop so you can catch the bus. But if
- 21:20Speaker 3: you don't want to catch the bus, then don't stand
- 21:22Speaker 3: in don't stand in the bus stop. Yeah, you know
- 21:24Speaker 3: what I'm saying.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 21:26Speaker 4: You talked about guys from guys from all over the
- 21:28Speaker 4: country going into one facility of fifty three guys have
- 21:31Speaker 4: that should have one goal, that's to win a super Bowl.
- 21:33Speaker 4: It when you go into your rookie season coming from
- 21:36Speaker 4: Florida State, you win a national championship. Like you've you've
- 21:38Speaker 4: been in the tip top of college. Now you're put
- 21:40Speaker 4: yourself back on the bottom of the totem pole. What
- 21:42Speaker 4: trials and tribulations did you have? Maybe trying to push
- 21:45Speaker 4: the envelope too much? Or how do I take leadership
- 21:48Speaker 4: as opposed to earn the earn the leadership. That's a
- 21:50Speaker 4: very difficult thing because everyone says the quarterback has to
- 21:52Speaker 4: be the leader in the room. And to be a
- 21:54Speaker 4: rookie immediately with grown men who have kids for one
- 21:58Speaker 4: k's all that and you're walking for your first time.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Yo, this ship's crazy. Yeah, you need to be a
- 22:02Speaker 2: leader in the situation.
- 22:02Speaker 4: What what where did you think you thrived And where
- 22:05Speaker 4: some areas say like, oh, if I could go back,
- 22:07Speaker 4: I would do that differently.
- 22:08Speaker 3: The places that I thrive was just bringing youth into
- 22:10Speaker 3: the whole situation, because I think even veterans in the
- 22:14Speaker 3: locker room, they need to see someone who loves the
- 22:16Speaker 3: game and instills that passion in them that they may
- 22:19Speaker 3: have once had, or they might just need somebody to
- 22:23Speaker 3: help them assist them into finding their passion back. And
- 22:26Speaker 3: I know I did that to the best of my abilities.
- 22:29Speaker 3: The thing that I feel like I could have did
- 22:30Speaker 3: a better job at then I know I could have
- 22:32Speaker 3: did a better job at, was being unapologetically myself the
- 22:36Speaker 3: first few games at Tampa Bay, like when we used
- 22:38Speaker 3: to lose, cry you know, I used to really to cry,
- 22:42Speaker 3: like I hated losing. But alone the course, I started
- 22:46Speaker 3: to be okay with losing those games. And when I
- 22:50Speaker 3: consider myself being okay, that's why I said now I
- 22:53Speaker 3: compromise too much. I wasn't me like I would never
- 22:56Speaker 3: be okay with losing. But anytime like this, this is
- 22:59Speaker 3: this like science, if you take a step backwards, that
- 23:05Speaker 3: is gonna hurt you way more than taking ten steps forward,
- 23:09Speaker 3: because if you're consistently moving forward step by step, you're
- 23:12Speaker 3: gonna get father. But the only time where you eliminate
- 23:15Speaker 3: all chances is when you take a step backwards. And
- 23:19Speaker 3: when you compromise who you truly are as a human being,
- 23:23Speaker 3: you're taking a step backwards. So I try to please
- 23:27Speaker 3: everyone else, like I ain't gonna cry. I know we
- 23:29Speaker 3: just got beat by twenty. I'm not gonna cry. I'm
- 23:31Speaker 3: just gonna act like I'm happy. But I'm acting like
- 23:36Speaker 3: I'm happy and we just got beat by twenty Like
- 23:39Speaker 3: that don't do nobody justice. Obviously, when you walk into
- 23:41Speaker 3: the building, like the mentality that you need to have
- 23:44Speaker 3: needs to be energetic, positive, so you don't bring anyone
- 23:48Speaker 3: else down. But you can't be okay with losing. And
- 23:52Speaker 3: that's the part that I feel like before I guess
- 23:55Speaker 3: the NFL, I never lost, Like I didn't lose, really,
- 23:58Speaker 3: you know, not really, we alway is one and I
- 24:01Speaker 3: think that's the part in the NFL that is limiting
- 24:04Speaker 3: me from getting to where I want to be because
- 24:06Speaker 3: I don't have enough wins, you know, and like early
- 24:10Speaker 3: on in my temper years, me compromising to being okay
- 24:13Speaker 3: with losing. I think that impacting my wins leading up
- 24:18Speaker 3: to this point up until.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Why do you feel like you started to be okay
- 24:22Speaker 2: with losing.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Because everyone else was okay with losing and I had
- 24:25Speaker 3: to be that person to make sure that they knew
- 24:28Speaker 3: it's okay. You know what I'm saying. We just need
- 24:30Speaker 3: to fix this. We just need to do this. We
- 24:32Speaker 3: just need to do that instead of being like, Nah,
- 24:33Speaker 3: this ain't okay, we have to do this. This is
- 24:35Speaker 3: it's required for us, not what we need to do. Bro.
- 24:38Speaker 3: This is a requirement if we want our jobs, if
- 24:41Speaker 3: we want to be everything that we that we want
- 24:43Speaker 3: to be. It is a requirement that we give all
- 24:45Speaker 3: we have in this game. It is a requirement that
- 24:47Speaker 3: we understand that winning is just as it contagious as losing.
- 24:51Speaker 3: And I don't think people understand that.
- 24:53Speaker 4: Yeah, when that first game of your NFL career officer
- 24:57Speaker 4: on the other side line, yes, your second year in
- 24:59Speaker 4: the NFL, and there was always this back and forth
- 25:01Speaker 4: about who's going on, Marcus or Jamis and then so
- 25:03Speaker 4: like the media is essentially establishing a rivalry between the
- 25:07Speaker 4: two of you. Did you feel that rivalry going the
- 25:09Speaker 4: end of that game or through the combined process, the
- 25:11Speaker 4: interview process.
- 25:12Speaker 3: I definitely felt it throughout the combined process. Man, me
- 25:14Speaker 3: and Marcus was training at the same place out in
- 25:18Speaker 3: cars Bad, prolific athletes were Ryan Clarity and its.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Beautiful, it's amazing, it's beautiful.
- 25:26Speaker 3: And we were out there to the same place, and
- 25:28Speaker 3: like we would show up and like we never would
- 25:31Speaker 3: work out together. Like literally, like if I was in
- 25:34Speaker 3: the building, like he was either leaving or he was
- 25:38Speaker 3: gonna go somewhere else. It was just never. Uh the
- 25:41Speaker 3: the the brotherhood that you see one and two typically has,
- 25:46Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, It was just like you
- 25:48Speaker 3: over there, I'm over here, like let's work, but I
- 25:52Speaker 3: ain't trying to do it together.
- 25:54Speaker 4: So no conversations to place because it is such an
- 25:56Speaker 4: interesting rivalry to me because both of you guys are
- 25:59Speaker 4: such good people.
- 26:00Speaker 3: I didn't tell you. I didn't tell you the good Parcus.
- 26:03Speaker 4: Never said a bad thing about anybody ever.
- 26:05Speaker 3: He's a good part.
- 26:07Speaker 4: But I'm still trying to drag the audience out of
- 26:09Speaker 4: a little bit Jameis Winston and Marcus hated each other.
- 26:12Speaker 3: We never hated each other, bro We just like obviously
- 26:16Speaker 3: I was Marcus was always the quiet person among us two,
- 26:21Speaker 3: so I know I probably have been extra uh in
- 26:24Speaker 3: times I was around him. But last year, man, I
- 26:27Speaker 3: took time just searching, like who can I train with? Uh?
- 26:30Speaker 3: And I took the accountability of going out to Oregon,
- 26:33Speaker 3: going out to train with Jimmy Radcliffe, who's who's a
- 26:36Speaker 3: long time strength coach at Oregon, just because I was
- 26:39Speaker 3: focusing on my speed and agility. So I went out
- 26:42Speaker 3: there and my my chiropractor, Eric Gorman is from Oregon, UH,
- 26:47Speaker 3: and UH loves Oregon, so he was like, hey, let's
- 26:50Speaker 3: go out here because he's the best. And Marcus was
- 26:52Speaker 3: out there. So that was the first time in ten
- 26:55Speaker 3: years we actually trained together. And it was such a
- 26:58Speaker 3: surreal moment because Marcus was the one that was showing
- 27:01Speaker 3: me the exercise. I was just like, dang, like, Marcaus,
- 27:04Speaker 3: you done have this upper hand on me this whole time.
- 27:07Speaker 3: You could have been put me on the like what's
- 27:09Speaker 3: going on? But it was it was such a respectable
- 27:13Speaker 3: moment because you know I got a chance to meet
- 27:15Speaker 3: his wife then, and he was I remember him playing
- 27:18Speaker 3: soccer with his wife at prolific athletes. Like his mental
- 27:22Speaker 3: was already ahead, like to focusing on his his family,
- 27:26Speaker 3: his journey, Like he wasn't into all the things that
- 27:28Speaker 3: I was into. He was focused on like me, like
- 27:30Speaker 3: my family, I'm about to have this opportunity. I'm gonna
- 27:32Speaker 3: focus on that. I was talking. Man, I got this opportunity.
- 27:34Speaker 3: IM about to make the most of the Man. We
- 27:35Speaker 3: got to win the super Bowl. Man, I just won
- 27:36Speaker 3: the championship. Man, it is unstoppable. And it's the only
- 27:39Speaker 3: person that beat me in my college career. So I
- 27:41Speaker 3: know I'm gonna be better than him. I'm focused on
- 27:44Speaker 3: that less. But he's focusing from the like he's focused
- 27:47Speaker 3: from more of a creative mindset. It was like, I
- 27:50Speaker 3: have my family, I have my gifts. I'm gonna go
- 27:52Speaker 3: and steward that and I'm gonna go to I'm focusing
- 27:54Speaker 3: more from the competitive mindset, like I'm gonna be better
- 27:57Speaker 3: than you. I'm gonna be Doe. I'm gonna do this
- 27:58Speaker 3: and that. And you can never have the sense focus
- 28:01Speaker 3: from the competitive mindset, right, you have to remain creative
- 28:04Speaker 3: because if you're competitive, you focus on one thing, one
- 28:07Speaker 3: thing open. But when you create a you're able to adapt,
- 28:10Speaker 3: you able to uh make a transition when the transition
- 28:14Speaker 3: is required.
- 28:15Speaker 4: It's such a breath of fresh air because you talked
- 28:17Speaker 4: to the normal thing with I'll just speak for football
- 28:20Speaker 4: players because what I.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Remember is like.
- 28:24Speaker 3: I got some special kids.
- 28:26Speaker 4: You always sit there and you're like, yo, I got
- 28:27Speaker 4: I had to my shoulder, and then you sort of
- 28:29Speaker 4: have success and you feel that chip on your shoulder
- 28:31Speaker 4: kind of going away. But then somebody is drafted ahead
- 28:33Speaker 4: of you, or somebody does what they say, here's a
- 28:35Speaker 4: better for me and better tackle than me. And it
- 28:37Speaker 4: was like that's all I needed to replant this this
- 28:39Speaker 4: chip on my shoulder. So like, did you and Marcus
- 28:43Speaker 4: ever like ten years later sit down and be like, hey,
- 28:45Speaker 4: I the way I approached the competition between us, I
- 28:48Speaker 4: favor the way you did it over the way I
- 28:49Speaker 4: did it was the ever that like transparent conversation between
- 28:52Speaker 4: you two.
- 28:52Speaker 3: No we haven't had we haven't had our yearly heart
- 28:55Speaker 3: to heart yet, but no, we we had was just
- 29:01Speaker 3: a moment of grace, a moment of peace. I was
- 29:04Speaker 3: like man, Bro, like, I'm grateful you're still in the lead.
- 29:07Speaker 3: And you're like, Bro, I'm grateful, like you're still in
- 29:09Speaker 3: the lead. Like, Bro, We we did it. We live
- 29:10Speaker 3: in our dream together. So no matter what was our
- 29:13Speaker 3: initial approach when we first started, we are here now.
- 29:17Speaker 3: So let's focus on what we're gonna do moving forward.
- 29:20Speaker 3: And like and when he had this great game in
- 29:22Speaker 3: Watchington shot tax When I had a few good games,
- 29:25Speaker 3: he shot me a text. And that is a relationship
- 29:27Speaker 3: that we never developed through the course of ten years.
- 29:30Speaker 3: But with maturity, with growth, with gratefulness and understanding that man,
- 29:36Speaker 3: it's bigger than me. I can't let this, this this
- 29:38Speaker 3: game get in between some of the relationships and from
- 29:42Speaker 3: the in some of the from in front of the
- 29:44Speaker 3: good people that I have in my life.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Yeah, you're known for your speeches. When was the first
- 29:50Speaker 2: speech first we gave? How old were you?
- 29:53Speaker 3: Man?
- 29:53Speaker 2: You stood up?
- 29:54Speaker 1: You're like, all right, I'm gonna go ahead and do it.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna stand up in front of this team and
- 29:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna deliver something race. I don't know what it's
- 29:59Speaker 1: gonna be, but I gotta say something.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Man. I always had something to say, So like that
- 30:03Speaker 3: I've never been short winning the breath, you know, like,
- 30:06Speaker 3: and I remember like the best Tiger days. I'm like, man,
- 30:09Speaker 3: we're going tear the hands off. Man, these boys can't
- 30:11Speaker 3: mess with us. I remember the murder, murder, kill kill.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Guess what happened on the fields. Tigers got crumped. The
- 30:17Speaker 3: other team got stumped, you know, Like that's just that's
- 30:21Speaker 3: just the way of the land.
- 30:24Speaker 6: Like, like, y'alls over there, who are we, Yeah, let's
- 30:35Speaker 6: rip that job, no doubt, We're gonna out bare crawl
- 30:39Speaker 6: them today.
- 30:42Speaker 3: And were thinking about we're kicking the door down. What
- 30:44Speaker 3: y'all doing over there? You know what I'm saying, honestly,
- 30:48Speaker 3: but honestly, bro, Like, I feel like, uh, the Lord
- 30:53Speaker 3: strewing me with a voice. And I felt like early
- 30:56Speaker 3: on in my career that boys was taken away from
- 30:58Speaker 3: me because of my energy being put to trying to
- 31:01Speaker 3: prove to everybody who I was. And when you are
- 31:04Speaker 3: in a place of proving and constantly proving, you lose
- 31:09Speaker 3: sight of your true growth. You lose sight of that
- 31:12Speaker 3: true grace that you should give yourself. You lose sight
- 31:15Speaker 3: of who you truly are because you so immerse what
- 31:20Speaker 3: someone else is thinking, and like one thing I love
- 31:23Speaker 3: about just about Jesus in general, like when I forget
- 31:30Speaker 3: what chapter it was, but I know. In Matthew six
- 31:33Speaker 3: thirty three, he talks about seeking first the kingdom of
- 31:35Speaker 3: the Lord and all his righteousness when someone is asking him,
- 31:38Speaker 3: like what two things should I take with me to
- 31:40Speaker 3: be able to get into heaven? And he says, first,
- 31:42Speaker 3: seek first the kingdo of God and all his rightousness,
- 31:44Speaker 3: and all things will be given to you. And the
- 31:46Speaker 3: second thing, he says, love thy neighbor as thyself. And
- 31:50Speaker 3: when I get to that point, obviously, like everything I
- 31:52Speaker 3: do is for my faith, My foundations is in the Lord.
- 31:55Speaker 3: But when I get to love thy neighbor as thyself,
- 31:58Speaker 3: when I be speaking to young kids, I'd be like, man,
- 32:01Speaker 3: he says, love that neighbor self. So if you're not
- 32:04Speaker 3: loving yourself, if you're not putting sweat, equality, and time
- 32:07Speaker 3: into yourself, you will not be able to physically love
- 32:10Speaker 3: your neighbor. You will not be able to physically serve
- 32:13Speaker 3: someone else if you're not focusing on what you can
- 32:15Speaker 3: do to be the solution for you. And that really
- 32:19Speaker 3: just sit with me, and it encourages me every single
- 32:22Speaker 3: day like when I'm me new people, when I'm talking
- 32:25Speaker 3: to my teammates, when I'm kissing my babies, is like, man,
- 32:28Speaker 3: I'm about to love my baby as I love myself.
- 32:32Speaker 3: But first, I got to make sure that my proles
- 32:34Speaker 3: is straight. I got to make sure that I'm doing
- 32:36Speaker 3: things in an efficient way. I got to make sure that
- 32:38Speaker 3: I'm acting and not just saying. I gotta make sure
- 32:42Speaker 3: that I'm doing all these things for me to be
- 32:45Speaker 3: able to be physically and mentally able to love someone
- 32:49Speaker 3: else and serve someone else in the capacity that I
- 32:52Speaker 3: may want to be served in. I know that's deep.
- 32:55Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, I'm trying to hit you
- 32:57Speaker 3: out with Bible service. But it's just a guy.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Right now.
- 33:00Speaker 3: It's a god in me. You know, has always came natural.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Like whether it's you're you know, trying to rally the
- 33:06Speaker 1: troops in middle school, high school, has that always came.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Natural to you?
- 33:09Speaker 3: It has? It has always came natural. I've never been
- 33:11Speaker 3: really lost for words, man, and uh, and I'm grateful
- 33:15Speaker 3: for that. My dad has obviously he's been my he's
- 33:18Speaker 3: been my coach coming up, and it was kind of
- 33:21Speaker 3: a it was kind of a way for me to
- 33:23Speaker 3: get on some of my teammates butts because it was
- 33:27Speaker 3: always my fault, you know what I'm saying. Like he
- 33:29Speaker 3: was always trying to hype me up and like like
- 33:31Speaker 3: you need to do this, you need to do that.
- 33:33Speaker 3: Like he stayed on me. He pushed me to that
- 33:35Speaker 3: maximum level. So I'm like gonna push me. I'm gonna
- 33:38Speaker 3: push y'all ass because y'all don't understand what I'm going
- 33:40Speaker 3: through at home. Y'all, y'all, y'all, just y'all just said practice, y'all.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Ain't y'all, ain't y'all ain't end up blowing off some
- 33:48Speaker 3: small cassett takes. So your dad for your daddy, because
- 33:51Speaker 3: we got old BC DHS casset taste that we got
- 33:54Speaker 3: to put in a little thing and then put it
- 33:56Speaker 3: in the in the in the bc R and then
- 33:58Speaker 3: rewind it. And we said, watching tape of our little
- 34:01Speaker 3: league games. I'm like that, like does does my uncle?
- 34:05Speaker 3: May you gotta record all our games? Like yes, you're
- 34:07Speaker 3: gonna watch this save you're about to see what you
- 34:09Speaker 3: did while you foot on right there like that. I
- 34:10Speaker 3: don't know. I'm trying to have fun. So how old
- 34:14Speaker 3: are you man, I start watching film when I was
- 34:17Speaker 3: six years old. Man's like, literally no, literally old DHS tapes. Man.
- 34:21Speaker 3: My dad pulling me in the back room like hey man,
- 34:24Speaker 3: you knowing what your homework? Yes, all right, come on
- 34:26Speaker 3: in here, like literally, go give me that little tape
- 34:29Speaker 3: right there when they had the liberty tapes, like the
- 34:31Speaker 3: little cassette tape that you will put inside the DHS
- 34:34Speaker 3: because that like you have the cam cordy little tap,
- 34:38Speaker 3: put it in a little adapter and then push it
- 34:40Speaker 3: in there. Man, Like I was like, man, and then
- 34:42Speaker 3: you know, lily tastes my uncle may up there. God,
- 34:45Speaker 3: race is so like he's he just see me going
- 34:48Speaker 3: to touchdown the film over there? Jo jo yo jo,
- 34:51Speaker 3: I'm just going to touch down over there. I'm like, Dad,
- 34:53Speaker 3: what are I supposed to be looking at? Right here? My shelf?
- 34:55Speaker 3: I hit you in your mouth. I'm just I'm just saying,
- 34:58Speaker 3: Holy it was a touchdown? You know, I ain't about
- 35:01Speaker 3: to touch down. You can't get a touchdown until you
- 35:03Speaker 3: got a first down? Here did you get a first down?
- 35:05Speaker 3: But I got a touchdown? How many first downs? Was
- 35:08Speaker 3: amount of y'alls that I had to get a first down?
- 35:10Speaker 3: But nah? I created my dad for like really giving
- 35:13Speaker 3: me that voice, man, because he was always encouraging me
- 35:16Speaker 3: to one be accountable with what I'm doing. And two,
- 35:20Speaker 3: if you see something, say something, If you feel something,
- 35:24Speaker 3: say something. Don't just sit here look at me and
- 35:26Speaker 3: tell me. I was finna say this, but you know what,
- 35:29Speaker 3: I ain't want to say it because I thought you
- 35:31Speaker 3: was gonna get mad at me. Who does that help?
- 35:34Speaker 3: You don't have nobody?
- 35:35Speaker 4: That's a massive piece of advice, you know what I'm saying?
- 35:36Speaker 4: How do you deal with that? So six years old,
- 35:39Speaker 4: you're watching film like we all, I think every human
- 35:43Speaker 4: being goes to that rebellious face in their life. Thirteen fourteen,
- 35:45Speaker 4: that Tostalstrem starts. It hit a little bit different. You
- 35:47Speaker 4: start focusing on girls a little bit more. You start
- 35:49Speaker 4: getting more rebellious towards your parents. How did you handle
- 35:53Speaker 4: Did you ever have a rebellious phase with your father
- 35:54Speaker 4: or anybody?
- 35:55Speaker 3: Uh? Man? One of the toughest times in my life
- 35:59Speaker 3: was was twenty nineteen, man, when I felt like I
- 36:02Speaker 3: was growing as a man, as an individual, but my
- 36:05Speaker 3: dad was going through some pains. I lost my grandmother,
- 36:10Speaker 3: his mother of the year before, and my uncle. My
- 36:15Speaker 3: uncle died on my birthday, you know, you know, it
- 36:19Speaker 3: was just an early phase of COVID on my birthday
- 36:21Speaker 3: of twenty nineteen, and it was tough for him. And
- 36:26Speaker 3: that was one of the first well he was He
- 36:28Speaker 3: died the next year, but he was balancing sicknesses and
- 36:30Speaker 3: stuff and it was tough for him. And he decided,
- 36:32Speaker 3: like I'm not gonna go to any of your games.
- 36:35Speaker 3: And like I'm okay, okay, we if we're playing New York.
- 36:39Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying. He don't life flying. I
- 36:40Speaker 3: get that, you know, but you know I'm coming into
- 36:42Speaker 3: my home games. He was like, no, I just don't.
- 36:46Speaker 3: I don't think so I don't think I won't come
- 36:47Speaker 3: into your games. And it was the first time where
- 36:49Speaker 3: like me and he was like bomping his I was
- 36:50Speaker 3: like hold on now, like man, like this one is
- 36:52Speaker 3: my contract year, like too, like I need you now
- 36:55Speaker 3: more than ever. You know what I'm saying, You've been
- 36:57Speaker 3: in my life. I'm fortunate to have a dad in
- 36:58Speaker 3: my life, and you decigning not to come to my games.
- 37:03Speaker 3: This whole time. I found out that my uncle will
- 37:05Speaker 3: see after that, like he just was going through it
- 37:07Speaker 3: because because it's his mom, and I've never seen him
- 37:10Speaker 3: in that way, and he didn't allow me to see
- 37:12Speaker 3: him in that way until I was down bad, until
- 37:16Speaker 3: you know, until I'm going into the Bucks facility in
- 37:20Speaker 3: the middle of COVID training my butt off, like knowing
- 37:23Speaker 3: that the world is shut down, but I see signs
- 37:26Speaker 3: of TB twelve being built in the middle of COVID.
- 37:29Speaker 3: I said, now, how in the hell are not able
- 37:32Speaker 3: to build a TB twelve in the middle of COVID,
- 37:35Speaker 3: and like, and nothing is announced yet, but I'm going
- 37:38Speaker 3: to the facility still, like, man, I'm gonna get a
- 37:40Speaker 3: chance to work with Tom Brady. Oh my goodness, it
- 37:42Speaker 3: is gonna be amazing. And then breaking news Tom Brady
- 37:45Speaker 3: has just signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And I'm
- 37:48Speaker 3: just sitting there like I knew that TV twelve there
- 37:51Speaker 3: ain't done. Nothing happened by coincidence, Like I'm sitting there
- 37:54Speaker 3: getting my life and I'm going through it with my dad,
- 37:56Speaker 3: Like I just been broken NFL record with thirty touch
- 37:59Speaker 3: thirty three touches down, thirty interceptions, Like I ain't nobody
- 38:01Speaker 3: gonna ever break that ever. They just they're not confident enough.
- 38:06Speaker 3: But man, I just had this and at the same time,
- 38:10Speaker 3: like like me and my dad were going through it
- 38:12Speaker 3: because I'm like, man, like this is my biggest hit ever,
- 38:14Speaker 3: like and you're not that for me, but a little better.
- 38:17Speaker 3: I was like, man, I went, I wasn't dead for
- 38:18Speaker 3: you either, because and sometimes in African American communities, like, yeah,
- 38:24Speaker 3: we have a dad present, but we're not consistently communicating
- 38:27Speaker 3: with our father all the time. It's through sports, it's
- 38:31Speaker 3: through uh, it's through discipline. Where we are communicating with
- 38:35Speaker 3: our fathers. We never sit there and have the quality
- 38:38Speaker 3: time because our fathers are either grinding or out to
- 38:42Speaker 3: have just a heart to heart conversation, you know. And
- 38:45Speaker 3: I and that's why I take pride of like sitting
- 38:47Speaker 3: down at a table with my wife and kids and
- 38:50Speaker 3: saying like, man, if you could change anything about the
- 38:52Speaker 3: world today, or like what would you change, just giving
- 38:55Speaker 3: them that authority that like, you can speak to me
- 38:57Speaker 3: about anything. I want to know, what, like what pack
- 39:00Speaker 3: are you willing to make into this world? And I
- 39:03Speaker 3: do believe that my relationship with my dad has grown
- 39:06Speaker 3: since that those two years, just because we actually had
- 39:09Speaker 3: to see each other both in downstages and we didn't
- 39:13Speaker 3: want either of us to be in that in that role,
- 39:15Speaker 3: but there was things and internally that we both was
- 39:18Speaker 3: facing that we had no choice but to confess and
- 39:21Speaker 3: come out with because we both were in a down
- 39:23Speaker 3: bad situation.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Question for you with your dad, Oh, yes, the role. Okay,
- 39:30Speaker 1: we'll get him, We'll get him in what's uh? You
- 39:33Speaker 1: got me curious?
- 39:33Speaker 2: How?
- 39:34Speaker 1: Because obviously your dad was hard on you in a
- 39:36Speaker 1: great way. I mean it led you to be the
- 39:38Speaker 1: player that you are, the man that you are. What
- 39:40Speaker 1: are you as you being a father?
- 39:41Speaker 2: Now?
- 39:42Speaker 1: Everything you've learned from being you know, fathered by your dad,
- 39:45Speaker 1: how do you approach fatherhood with your kids knowing like, okay,
- 39:49Speaker 1: they never did sit down and have the tough conversations
- 39:51Speaker 1: or have the vulnerabilities or when you're sitting at dinner
- 39:53Speaker 1: and everything else. How has your dad raised and you
- 39:57Speaker 1: helped you be the father that you are. Whether it's
- 39:59Speaker 1: I'm gonna take the things that he taught me and
- 40:01Speaker 1: also I'm going to do things a little bit differently,
- 40:03Speaker 1: you know, against the things that I feel like I
- 40:06Speaker 1: did not get for.
- 40:07Speaker 2: Him for them as a kid.
- 40:08Speaker 3: Well, I'm so blessed and grateful that the time and
- 40:12Speaker 3: the support that my wife gives me with my with
- 40:16Speaker 3: my children. Of how on top of everything she is, Like,
- 40:20Speaker 3: I think it's truely a blessing when you have a
- 40:21Speaker 3: partner that's like down for you. And I'm lucky because
- 40:25Speaker 3: I met my baby when years in high school, like
- 40:28Speaker 3: we've been high school, sweetheart, we didnt went through everything together,
- 40:31Speaker 3: like we didn't grow together literally grew together like interest.
- 40:34Speaker 3: We didn't grew together. Uh you know, we didn't have heartbreak,
- 40:37Speaker 3: we didn't have upsets. But man, when I view my
- 40:41Speaker 3: kids and I know I'm loving her and I'm willing
- 40:44Speaker 3: to sacrifice and provide and protect her. When I'm looking
- 40:47Speaker 3: at my babies, I want my babies to do as
- 40:49Speaker 3: I do and not do as I say. So when
- 40:52Speaker 3: I'm with them, I'm intentional with my words. I'm intentional
- 40:55Speaker 3: with my actions because I want them to be young
- 40:58Speaker 3: men of action and right now like six and four anyway,
- 41:00Speaker 3: So what I'm really saying, they really probably not listen
- 41:04Speaker 3: or hearing me. I know one of them definitely not
- 41:06Speaker 3: listening to hearing me. But I do it with simple things.
- 41:11Speaker 3: I engage with them by what they want, you know,
- 41:14Speaker 3: because I want my babies to know what they heart
- 41:17Speaker 3: truly desires because I know I always knew, well I
- 41:20Speaker 3: wanted to be a foot doctor, but I always knew
- 41:22Speaker 3: I wanted to be an NFL Super Bowl winning quarterback.
- 41:26Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, playing Dodgers because of the
- 41:29Speaker 3: woman said, your hobby who inspired me to be a
- 41:31Speaker 3: foot doctor. She was taking care of my grandma feet
- 41:33Speaker 3: and my daddy feed So that's a long story. But anyway,
- 41:36Speaker 3: for my babies, man, I just want them to do
- 41:38Speaker 3: as I do and not do as I say, man,
- 41:40Speaker 3: And I want to continue to be this man of increase,
- 41:42Speaker 3: and I want them to see me encountering with other
- 41:45Speaker 3: people and leading other people so that they can know like, hey,
- 41:48Speaker 3: this is this is just what we do. This is
- 41:51Speaker 3: this is this ain't no facade. Like my daddy is
- 41:54Speaker 3: the best daddy in the world because of his actions,
- 41:58Speaker 3: not because of what he's saying, not because what he
- 42:00Speaker 3: necessarily uh tell me or write down in his journal.
- 42:04Speaker 3: You know, I think that's an important part too. I
- 42:07Speaker 3: have I got my receipts, you know, I got I
- 42:09Speaker 3: keep my journal, you know what I'm saying, So when
- 42:10Speaker 3: I'm right, write stuff down, like I'm like I'm gonna
- 42:13Speaker 3: read this my six year old son. He'll sit there
- 42:15Speaker 3: and read what I just said. So now we're doing
- 42:18Speaker 3: tangible things like, man, what you're writing that down for?
- 42:21Speaker 3: Like sho I wrote down I'm kind, I'm greatful, I'm confident, man,
- 42:24Speaker 3: because I need those affirmations just as much as you,
- 42:26Speaker 3: my son. You know. Okay, So you're talking to yourself like, well, yes,
- 42:31Speaker 3: I'm talking to myself. But we have the ability to
- 42:34Speaker 3: speak life into ourselves. Like, so, so you're still talking
- 42:38Speaker 3: to yourself though, Dad, I'm like, but it's okay to
- 42:41Speaker 3: talk to yourself. We actually talk to ourselves more than
- 42:43Speaker 3: anybody else. And he's like, okay, and you don't understand
- 42:48Speaker 3: the impact that you're making because they're still processing.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Break by breakfast.
- 42:52Speaker 3: Yes, it is.
- 42:54Speaker 2: That is awesome.
- 42:55Speaker 3: It is as two.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Guys with kids as well.
- 42:57Speaker 4: That's awesome to hear that you're doing everything I know
- 42:59Speaker 4: you'll do.
- 43:00Speaker 2: Saying that he's got boys, I know I got girls.
- 43:03Speaker 2: I'm praying two girls, two girls. They're the best to
- 43:08Speaker 2: the throne.
- 43:11Speaker 3: Underneath one.
- 43:12Speaker 4: This question is so tailored to you. I hope you
- 43:15Speaker 4: embrace it and you love it. It's halftime. The three
- 43:18Speaker 4: of us were down three scores. We got to rally
- 43:21Speaker 4: the troops. What are you saying to the boys at halftime?
- 43:24Speaker 4: Coach looks, everybody says a couple of words, jamet's bring
- 43:27Speaker 4: them up.
- 43:28Speaker 3: Hey, yeah, it's zero zero. What happened already happened. But
- 43:31Speaker 3: it ain't nothing that we can do but act. Now.
- 43:34Speaker 3: Let's act. Now, let's get busy. Let's go out there
- 43:36Speaker 3: and let's dominate the line of scrimmage. First, let's make
- 43:39Speaker 3: sure that we execute in the red zone. We're gonna
- 43:41Speaker 3: get down there. I'm gonna throw it all over there.
- 43:43Speaker 3: But let's make sure that we are populating the football
- 43:45Speaker 3: on defense. Let's make sure that we are attacking the
- 43:47Speaker 3: football on offense. I'm talking to your receis because i'mnna.
- 43:50Speaker 3: Let you get it all right. Here we go, team
- 43:52Speaker 3: on three, one two three, Team.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Beautiful love, beautiful bither. Thank you for your time. This
- 43:58Speaker 1: has been incredible. Legitimately, thanks, I appreciate you. Man, it's
- 44:01Speaker 1: been a minute. We've been one to make this happen
- 44:03Speaker 1: for a while now. I've been talking with Joe, But sincerely,
- 44:06Speaker 1: thank you for coming.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 44:07Speaker 3: I'm grateful for you. Thank you.
- 44:08Speaker 2: Yes, sir, it appreciate you.
- 44:10Speaker 3: Yes, Sir appreciate you.
